The absence of Four has Wild sticking even closer to Legend and Hyrule. He loves them dearly, but his instincts call for a flock.
Hyrule is perfectly happy to attach himself to Wild like an octorok. Prying him off becomes harder and harder. Legend and Wild end up sacrificing each other to escape. They don’t really need much. Wild’s got plenty of food and games in his slate and Wind brings meals from Malon. Sky doesn’t come again, probably wrapped up with Four.
“Can you tell me more about nesting?” Wild stares at his hand of cards without really seeing them.
“What do you want to know?” Legend plays one and Hyrule clicks his teeth.
“Anything? I don’t—well, I don’t remember. And I was so busy on my journey that I didn’t stay in one spot. I don’t think I remember anyone nesting?”
Legend nudges the traveler to go for his turn. “Probably not. Nesting means hunkering down somewhere safe and comfortable. Most passerines do it at home. Let’s see…well, we have Nesting season like the seabirds have Migration or the raptors have Hunting.”
Wild’s frown deepens. He’ll have to ask the flock about that later.
“It’s usually triggered by other birds and when we feel safe,” the bowerbird continues. “So, yeah, it makes sense you wouldn’t during your journey.”
“I nested with my Zelda,” Hyrule pipes up. “We aren’t a flock, but we trust each other.”
“Nesting in the castle? Nice.”
The thrasher’s laugh is mostly trill, melodic as always. “Honestly, I rather be in a loft like this than buried in mounds of lace and silks. She’s got the other Zelda now, so it’s not really a problem.”
Right, Hyrule’s adventure ended with two princesses instead of one.
“So nesting is triggered because I’m with you?” Wild asks.
“Probably. All passerines are a little different, depending on their instincts. Hyrule here,” a nudge, “wants his pair birds and no one else. Four is happy with anyone. What about you?”
“Ah…” Wild’s fiddles with his cards. They are no longer playing, caught up in conversation. “I’m more like Four…I guess? I’m fine with other birds in the nest. Obviously not the raptors but…” he trails off.
What does he want? What is he missing? What was nesting like for him Before? What about when this ends and he has to go home? Zelda isn’t a nesting bird, despite being social enough.
“Open-nest or closed-nest,” Legend says. “Anyway, sometimes it’s being around other flock birds, but usually it hits in the fall time. It gets colder and the days get longer. We want to tuck away somewhere warm.”
A question sits on the tip of his tongue, too embarrassing to ask. Legend can read him like an open book and nudges him. “Spit it out.”
“I don’t want—chicks. And it’s not springtime. So what’s the point…”
Hyrule breaks the silence with giggles that turn into a waterfall of chirps. Legend joins in, eyes dancing. There’s nothing malicious so Wild swats at them, wings fluffing.
“I’m sorry! It’s just—we aren’t actual birds!” Hyrule wheezes for air. “Sure, some instincts are similar, but we’re hylian, too.”
“By the Three,” Legends says. “Can you imagine what it would be like if we were real birds? No, thank you. Secondary instincts are bad enough.”
Wild’s ears are burning. “You don’t have to laugh that hard.”
“Nesting is about resting,” the bowerbird continues, taking pity on his flockmate. Hyrule still giggles, wiping at his eyes. “Like animals hibernating? It’s a built-in instinct to settle down and relax for a bit. Recharge and bond with your flock. Spend time with family.”
That…makes a lot more sense.

I think the legend of Zelda is my special interest?
I'm not autistic, but I've never had something grip me so long as this franchise. It's been going downhill ever since I've played Breath of the wild in 2020. At first it was just a typical hyperfixation (although I did almost fail some of my high school classes because it was the only thing I could think about). But then it went on for months so okay... longer fixation than i'm used to but whatever.
I've hyperfixated on multiple other fandom since then, but unlike all of the times where my previous interest faded when I discovered a new one, Zelda just stuck. I still got excited seeing fanart and fanfics, I went out of my way to see any news from nintendo. I may have been less invested in it than in 2020-2021 but it's been at the back of my mind ever since.
Especially what helped me fuel and retain my interest in it was Linked Universe, especially in reading more about the lore and the other games. I have more to say on the subject but this post is already getting long enough and that's not the point.
Which brings us to today, in 2024. Calling TLOZ an hyperfixation would be just wrong, it's not what it is anymore. But it's definitely not a "normal" interest. When I hear someone talk about it, or see someone with merch related to it, I have to stop myself from coming over to excitedly ramble about it (or rant about totk). I've spent hours scouring wikis and watching videos about every game, their creation etc. I think about it at least once a day and will relate it to every new thing I love. And I don't feel my love for it fading any times soon. I've never felt this strongly about something ever.
I've had this thought for some times now, I had seen a lot of people say that special interests was a term that could only be used by autistic people, and I thought it hadn't been long enough for me to call it that and that special interests where something you developed when you were a kid. Well, today I did some actual research and
1. People with ADHD (me) can have special interests.
2. A special interest can develop in adulthood and I think almost 5 years is long enough to call it that, no?

You Make Sure I Always See The Daylight
A Legend of Zelda AU gift fic for @lunarisdeus
(Lunaris Deus, I hope you enjoy this fic! I tried very hard to write a Fierce Deity that is like yours. It's not meant to be canon to your RP experiences or anything but I tried my hardest to make the characters like something that would fit into your personal AU. From one FD enjoyer to another, it was a pleasure and an honour to write him for you.)
This is but a fragment of what the Fierce Deity can be, a moment in time amongst many. For a being older than the stars and born of the void, there are many possibilities to be seen.
Link was conflicted.
For as long as he'd been the Hero of Time, he had known that it was his duty, his calling, to help people. He had used whatever he could to do that, any item or magical ability he could obtain. The Master Sword, the spells from the Great Fairies, the masks. The ocarina. He used them and he learned to fight and he had saved everyone twice before he was even twelve years old, then he wandered into the wilds of Hyrule to save people some more.
He turned the Fierce Deity mask over and over in his long fingers.
He was older now, more than twice as old as he was back then. He had used the mask as a child and had enjoyed the power and abilities it gave him. But as he got older, more wary, something about it had given him pause. It made him uncomfortable with the vague whispers and feelings he sensed while wearing it and so he had packed it away, put it somewhere safe, decided to fight on his own and be the hero he should be.
The voice had whispered to him regardless.
Now he held the mask again, cradled it in his long fingers much the way he had with the ocarina of time. It whispered, sang, murmured of the battles they could fight and the foes they would defeat together. He closed his eyes, clenched the wood tightly in his hands and tried not to remember the feeling of being tall and strong and powerful. Of commanding the power of the Goddesses. Of enemies fleeing before him at a mere glance.
He couldn't stop himself from those thoughts.
He didn't want to.
Link stood suddenly, kicking at the chest he had dug up, and shoved the mask into his bag without a second thought. He was no longer a child. He could handle the power, the vague sense of ancient hunger that lingered around the mask. In some ways, the hunger matched his own. He would use it and help people and it would be fine. Because he was the Hero and that's what heroes did.
**********
The whispers were louder with every use of the mask. Before, they had never sounded much like words but rather the gentle susurrus of voices in the wind or the sound that speaks your name the moment before you fall asleep. Now, he could hear words, a bit of praise for a well done strike or a disappointed mutter when he failed to get a killing blow. Before he had used the power all on his own but he could swear it was trying to guide him now, to help him become better than he was.
He listened to it.
And those moments when he was a god, when he held the Goddesses' power in his hands, were when he felt the most alive. He could protect Hyrule like this. He could be the hero he had been with Ganondorf, though no one alive but him remembered that it ever happened. He could be strong and powerful. He didn't need the Master Sword anymore!
Zelda was worried about him but he didn't think much of her opinions these days anyway. She had sent him back in time, to him losing Navi and falling into Termina and the only one who actually got their childhood back was her. He tried to tell her about the mask many years ago and she didn't listen. Maybe she thought it was a toy, a bit of imagination. Maybe she didn't understand the concept of a devouring hunger in an ancient power that he pulled over himself like a shield against the world. Maybe he hadn't understood it either but they were children. How could they? And now, now that he was using it again and people were talking? Now she was interested. Now she wanted to know.
"Zelda, why do you care what I use to defend the Kingdom?" It had been months since he dug it back up, since he began using it again. Only now did the princess summon him to the castle, a call he had been trying to avoid but could no longer do so.
"I've seen reports, Link. About some terrifying, white-eyed man decimating moblins and camps of bandits."
"Well gee Zelda, that doesn't sound at all like me. Why do you assume it's me?"
"You told me about the mask, when we were kids."
Ah, so she had been paying attention after all. Link was stoney-faced as he stared at the woman. She waited, hoping he would have more to add but when the silence stretched on into the realm of the uncomfortable, Zelda continued, her lips pursed in agitation.
"Why are you using something so dangerous?"
"It's not dangerous."
"Link, it's an unknown item that apparently has the power of some dark god inside it."
"It's the power of the Goddesses."
"And who told you that? How can you know?" The man was mute once again and Zelda pinched the bridge of her nose. "May I see it?"
He wanted to say no. He didn't want the mask out of his possession for one moment but he knew she would grow more suspicious if he clung to it too tightly, was too jealous. So he handed it to her, as casually as he could, and watched with careful eyes as she turned it over in her hands.
"There is so much power in this, Link. It feels…"
"I am not ignorant of the power in things, Princess." His voice was cooly formal, indifferent and yet annoyed that she thought he went into this unknowing. Of course he knew. He was the Hero of Time, wasn't he? "I choose to use it. I control it."
Didn't he?
"I'm not sure it's a good idea, that's all. What if it takes over? What if you lose control of it?"
"Then you'll just have to kill me, won't you?" He said it so casually, laughter in his voice; the most ridiculous idea to ever be thought, wasn't it? Of course he wouldn't lose control. Of course she wouldn't have to kill him. None of those things would ever happen.
With nervous laughter, Zelda handed the mask back to the blond-haired man and he casually, specifically with no hurry at all, put it back in his bags with everything else he had collected over the years. He carried all his things upon him, as he didn't have much and never needed a lot to begin with. It was enough and the mask made it easier. For a moment, he just stood, waiting for her to dismiss him but the princess said nothing, staring at him with wide, watery eyes.
"Link…what happened? Why is it like this between us?"
"I don't know what you mean."
"When we were children, you would come to me. I gave you…I gave you the ocarina to help you along your way but when you returned later you were different. What happened? You could have stayed here, in Castle Town. Or wherever. You could have stayed but you kept leaving. Why?"
He couldn't think of a way to answer without baring his heart, his entire existence before her. He had worked so hard to save her from Ganondorf. He had done every temple and killed every boss and had fought atop the tallest tower to free her from her crystal prison. Of course, she hadn't been trapped the entire time, had she? She had been Sheik, enigmatic and helpful, the mysterious man that had given him all those songs and guided Link on the right path. Even that had been a lie though. Sheik had been Zelda and then he had saved her and she…
She threw him away.
Sent him back to a childhood he no longer fit into. Pushed him away from the victory he had fought so hard to obtain. Forced to deal with her younger self and try to save them all from Ganondorf anyway.
That's what had happened to them. She had cast him off and wondered why he couldn't stand to be around her once his duty to the kingdom was done. He knew that this girl, this woman, was not the one who had done that but he couldn't forget it.
"Nothing, Zelda. We grew up. That's all." And he turned to go, not waiting for her to dismiss him, not wanting to see the look on her face. He turned and he walked away and no one stopped him as he left the castle, maybe for the last time or maybe not. He didn't know. He wasn't sure he would come back if she summoned him again.
That night, around a lonely fire in a quiet forest, he sighed, reconsidering what happened. He had been so melancholy recently; certainly he didn't want to alienate the princess. Maybe he was just lonely; he had never had a chance to form any real connections in Hyrule after he came back from Termina. It had just felt awkward. Why make friends and find a place to settle down if you're just going to get dragged away from it all over and over again? Maybe he should have stayed in Termina instead. Maybe he should have trusted that the three days would be over and he could have become friends with any of the people he had helped. Maybe he should go back to Zelda and–
"My, you certainly are in a mood tonight."
Link jumped to his feet, startled by the voice. He could see nothing, had heard no one walk up. He had excellent hearing and was always ready when something came crunching through the dead leaves or the whispering grass. He could always hear something and there was nothing. No one. Just a voice. A voice that laughed suddenly, deep and powerful and somehow musical at the same time.
Goddesses, but he hadn't played music in such a long time.
But there was no one here! No one at all. His reflexes and instincts were not that bad to completely miss something in the empty clearing and the voice had been so close. It sounded like it had been coming from…his bag. Tentatively, he stepped towards it, reached out a hand slowly. Nothing spoke, nothing moved. He reached down and flipped the bag open. The mask stared at him from the depths, somehow in stark contrast despite the shadows. The empty eyes gazed at him and he looked back. It was still just a mask. It didn't move, didn't speak. Just a mask.
"Certainly, you know that is not true."
Link jerked his gaze up. Just beyond his firelight stood something, someone, a figure that was both brilliant and shadows all at the same time. Was it solid? Was it a ghost? It was tall, taller than he, but Link could make out no detail.
"Who are you? What are you doing here? I'm armed!"
"Of course you are. Though I believe you consider me part of that." The figure stepped forward and Link took a single, shocked step back. It was the face on the mask, given form, though perhaps not as solid as it could be. White haired, white eyes, blue and red marks on his face. The silver armor shone in the firelight, reflecting back into Link's eyes and he squinted. It was his hat, his tunic, his face on the Deity and his mind tumbled into confused thoughts. He had never seen the Fierce Deity face to face, had only ever been the god while fighting. The size and power that was presented was awe inspiring and Link had a moment of bitter jealousy; would that he could be like that, instead of just the Hero of Time. Forgotten, unwanted, no longer needed now that the Kingdom was safe.
"How?" Words failed Link momentarily as he stared up into the deity's eyes. "How are you…"
"I can make myself known, when I wish."
"Bullshit."
"Such language for a Hero of Hyrule."
"If you could show yourself, why didn't you do it before!?"
"Ah, well, perhaps that is more complicated. When you first obtained the mask, you were merely a child. Perhaps it wasn't the right time. And then you stowed me away so I continued to sit quietly in my prison until someone picked me up. Turns out it was you once again. You're quite a bit older than the last time."
The whispers, the feelings from wearing the mask. They all started to come together in Link's mind as he stared mutely at the tall man in front of him. Slowly he reached down and pulled out the mask, looking between it and the deity. The god grew more solid looking by the minute. "Why are you here now?"
"It seemed like you could use the company."
"Company is the last thing I want or need."
"Ah, now, I don't believe that for a minute."
"What do you know? You're just a mask!"
The Fierce Deity laughed long and loud and Link's skin twitched with the sound, the power that rolled off the being in front of him. He knew why the deity laughed. He knew very well that the mask was more than just a mask, much more than any of the others he had gotten in Termina. Only Majora's mask had felt even remotely similar. This was an ancient power, part Goddess divine and part something else. He was honestly surprised Zelda hadn't been more worried about it when she held it in her hands.
"Ah, yes. Well, the Princess didn't have to know what I didn't want her to know."
"Will you stop that!?"
"Perhaps if you didn't think quite so loud, I wouldn't hear it so well."
With an annoyed sigh, Link dropped down onto the ground again, still holding the mask in his hands. It shouldn't surprise him that the being he had worn so blithely could hear his every thought but it felt like an invasion of his privacy in a way that also felt very hypocritical. After all, wasn't he the one invading the deity's privacy? But he had never really thought of it as its own person before, had he? Just a power that he could hold and use. "Okay, so."
"Hmm?" The Deity was laughing at him with his eyes, a startling occurrence. Link had never considered what was in the blank whiteness before. Blank was exactly what they weren't.
"So, what are you? What should I call you? Are…are you trapped? Should I get you out?"
"While admirable, you are completely unable to free me and nor should you try. You may call me whatever you wish. And you know what I am."
"Not particularly, no! Just…a god. A power."
"That's close enough to the truth for the rest not to matter."
"Okay, well. Are you going to just hang around me like this forever now? How solid are you? Is it going to be weird when I have to wear the mask?"
"You worry too much, Link. Nothing has changed except I have shown myself to you now."
"Great, well." Suddenly Link was exhausted and he shoved the mask back into his bag, frowning into the fire. "Right, I'm going to bed then."
"No more questions? No more indignant muttering?"
"Well I'm not getting rid of the mask so I guess there will be plenty of time for that later." And with that, the Hero of Time turned over, facing away from the apparition, and closed his eyes, ears twitching with the night sounds around him. He didn't know what happened to the Deity, never turned to check, but he supposed the god must have faded into invisibility once again and when his eyes finally closed, he knew nothing more until morning.
**********
They became regular occurrences, the visits from the Fierce Deity. Sometimes around the fire, sometimes riding through a forest from one distant place to another. And still Link used the mask, killed bandits and monsters alike, doling out justice like it was his job. Maybe it was. He was the Hero after all. The Deity no longer whispered to him but engaged in casual conversation mixed in with anecdotes of battles long past. It was fascinating…and useful. He began to think of using the mask less as an item and more as a partnership.
Link also began to look forward to his talks with Fierce, as he started to call him. He still wasn't sure what to make of the god but at least he was companionship. It was always a little unsettling being stared at by those eyes but sometimes he forgot as the two chatted around the fire at night. He talked about his life, the heroing he had done as a child, the lack of belonging anywhere. Fierce spoke briefly of his role under the Goddesses, of being an instrument of divine justice for the universe. It was hard to tell but Link thought that perhaps the god was not entirely happy with the role he had been given. He understood that though; destiny had not been kind to the ten year old he had been back then. It felt like they had something in common and the hero felt a deeper companionship. Friendship almost.
"What was it between you and Majora, anyway?" Link poked at the embers of the fire as he and Fierce sat together. The god seemed very solid at times like this.
"Why does it matter?"
"It doesn't. I was just a kid when it happened and was curious."
"I would not be able to explain in a way that makes sense to mortals. Perhaps it's best to say that the Goddesses wish him gone and it was my job to take care of that."
"Well, I guess we did manage to do that, right?"
"To part of him, yes."
Link stared into the flames, considering the words and what they might mean. Fierce always did say incomprehensible things like that. He didn't doubt the god anymore but he also knew there were things that were never going to be explained.
Days later, Link was walking to a town and thinking about the things Fierce almost, but not quite, told him. Someday he'd ask him for real what was going on, try to understand exactly what he was putting on his face to fight evil with. Someday he wouldn't be afraid of the answers. Or be afraid of what the mask might be doing to him. Someday…
It was his own fault, he supposed. His fault that he wasn't paying attention, that his bag was on Epona's saddle, that he had stopped carrying his regular sword within easy reach. He didn't hear anyone approaching him or see them before it was too late to stop someone from grabbing him.
An immediate scuffle. Thrashing out at anyone he could reach, Link grabbed at an arm and swung the body it was attached to around as hard as he could. Gasps and shouts sounded loud in his ears and something hard slammed into his head. He staggered forward, lights flashing in front of his eyes as something cold and sharp punctured his side. He stumbled and hands reached for him again as he resisted the urge to curl around the bleeding wound.
Yes, he was injured and surrounded but it would take more than that to bring him down.
With a wild yell, Link yanked out the dagger embedded in his side and slashed it at a masked man in front of him. Though his vision swam, he could make out dark clothes and hidden faces. They weren't monsters then and they didn't want him knowing who they were. Perhaps a planned assault on him specifically. He fought with the rage of an injured animal, spinning to attack another masked opponent. Another kicked him in the back of the knees and he bit back a cry of pain. A fist connected with his cheek and he dodged backwards to lessen the blow but the attacks were coming too close, too fast to avoid everything. If he could just get to his things… Something large and solid slammed into his head from behind, a tree branch perhaps, and he fell forward, coughing out blood. Someone grabbed his hair and yanked him backwards and up, holding a blade to his neck as another person kicked his stolen dagger out of his hand.
"If you know what's good for you, you'll stop struggling."
"Never have, really." Twisting suddenly, Link slammed his head into his masked opponent. He took a shallow slash to the back of his neck and quite a few strands of his hair were ripped out but it was good enough to duck out of the hands of the man holding him. It didn't, unfortunately, keep him from being kicked in the wounded side from another attacker and he staggered again. Outnumbered and surprised, this wasn't good news for him. Where was his bag? Where was Epona? The ringing in his ears from repeated hits to the head made it hard to hear and his vision was blurry as another set of hands grabbed hold of him, then spun him and threw him hard into a tree.
Rubbing his mouth with the back of his hand, Link stared outwards at the bandits or whatever they were attacking him. How many were there? He was having trouble focusing. An arrow flew at him from a direction he couldn't place and embedded in his left shoulder; the strangled gurgle that escaped his lips was impossible to hold back. He put his hand up to the shaft, blue eyes narrowed at his opponents. Someone had Epona's reins and he could hear her neighing in panic. They weren't going to hurt Epona, were they? Like hell he'd let them do that! Yanking the arrow out of his shoulder with a cry of pain, he rushed towards the nearest masked opponent before they realised what he was doing. He managed to slash it across their face, ripping a large rent into the fabric of the cloth mask and drawing blood on the man's skin, before taking a dagger in the back of his right shoulder from one of the others. Then another thick tree branch slammed into him from the other side. Bleeding from several places now, he finally fell to his knees and did not get back up. If only had had his sword. If only he had the mask.
If only…
Someone stomped on his hand and he could hear something snap inside his skin as he screamed. His ears twitched as voices spoke above his head, someone yelling that they were not to kill, not to hurt him badly. Derisive laughter above his head mocked the first voice as a boot slammed into his head and he crashed into the ground, darkness engulfing him at last.
**********
When Link came to, he was in a ruined shack somewhere. The sounds of murmurs and the crackle of a fire told him where his attackers were but his face was pressed into the dirt and his arms were tied behind his back so he had no real way of confirming aside from the tiny patch of earth he could see. His legs too were bound and he contemplated how much more thorough these bandits were compared to the Gerudo who captured him all those years ago.
He was not in good shape and he knew it. His attackers hadn't really tried to heal him and even in this strange position he was in, he could tell he was woozy from blood loss. His head ached and his left fingers were strangely numb. Was there a fairy nearby that he could get to for healing? He didn't know. He wasn't sure he'd make it that far. Where was Epona? And his stuff? He shuffled a little then groaned in pain. At least one of those hits did something not very nice to his ribs and it hurt to breathe in too much. With a sigh that pushed a small cloud of dust into his face, he slumped and closed his eyes, wondering what their plans for him were.
"You're not looking too good."
Link's eyes opened and he saw Fierce's boots in front of him. "I'm not good, thanks for asking."
The god's hands reached down and, feeling more solid than they had any right to do, gently moved Link onto his side. He winced again as several of his injuries protested the move but it did at least feel better not laying on his nose. "You need medical help."
"Yeah." Link laughed a little, then coughed painfully. "Yeah, probably. Doubt they're going to get me a fairy or anything though. I think they want me alive but not healthy enough to escape."
"Hmmm."
One of the men, no longer wearing a mask, walked by the door and stopped in front of it, peering in. Link closed his eyes quickly but no one called the alarm at the sight of the white-haired, over seven-foot tall god that was in the small building with him. When he opened his eyes again, Fierce was sitting next to him and the man was gone. "That was weird."
"Not many can see me. Unless someone is wearing the Mask."
"I don't suppose you can knock them out or anything either, huh?"
"It would be difficult."
"Ah well, worth a shot." The pair fell silent again and Link glanced out the door. He thought he could see his bag out by the fire, next to one of his kidnappers. If he strained his ears, he was sure he could hear Epona making annoyed noises so at least she was all right. He wasn't even sure what they wanted from him. For a moment, he just let himself slump wearily on the ground. There were dark reddish-brown patches where he had been laying just a moment before and he had a sinking suspicion it was his blood. Had he been hurt too much? Would the bandits know if he was bleeding out slowly? His eyes drifted shut while he concentrated on breathing without pain for a few moments; it was not successful.
"Link."
"Mmmm?"
"You need help."
"Yeah."
"I'll be back to help you. Just be patient."
He muttered something that might have been yes but didn't open his eyes again. As he lay on the ground, he could hear the men outside talking amongst themselves, complaining about the fight and arguing over what percentage of the fee they all deserved. It almost felt like a dream as one of the men began arguing adamantly.
"Well, I think we deserve more than what we were promised after that fight! He slashed my face up real good with that arrow! How'd he pull that out of his shoulder anyway!? What the hell is he made of?"
"I dunno, but I'm not touchin' him until we absolutely have to."
A third voice laughed. "If you'd brought more people like they suggested, it wouldn't have been that hard."
The second voice sounded petulant in response. "It's one man! Six should have been enough! The more we bring, the lower our share each! Maybe he has something we could take. Rupees or something." There were sounds of rustling material and Link could imagine one of them pulling his bag over and opening it. A sluggish part of his brain wondered if that was a good idea. He had things in there he didn't want people to find. Important things. Powerful things.
"Hey, we're not supposed to be manhandling his things." The third voice sounded worried. "Did you guys not listen at all to what they said?"
"Pfffft, what they don't know won't hurt them." There were more sounds; the faint rustling of the bag being moved, the clink of items being knocked into each other. "Wow, this thing is bigger than it looks. Hmm, some weird hook thing, a strange glass item. Man, this weirdo really likes his masks though. There's several."
"Look, just put the stuff down and leave it be, man."
"No way! Hey, look at this mask! It's like some creepy guy with marks on his face!"
Link's eyes snapped open and he immediately regretted it. His vision swam and he had to push down the immediate urge to throw up. The mask. They had found the mask. They couldn't…
"Hey! What are you doing?"
"Calm down, it's just a mask. It's not even scary looking. Look! I'm a scary hero-man and I'm going to–AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHGGGGGGGG!"
Link tried his hardest to push himself up, to fight the waves of dizziness and nausea that ate at him. They had gotten the mask. They were going to– No, he couldn't let them get that! It was dangerous! No one else could be allowed to wear it!
It was too late. Link managed to push himself to his knees, swaying ominously as he did so. The sounds outside his ruined prison were not good. He caught flashes of something white and deadly going by the empty doorway, heard screams of agony, the hum of a large sword as it swung through the air quite near the building he was in. There was a loud thud and the building shook dangerously. It wasn't long before silence settled around him again, the only sound that of the fire crackling merrily outside.
He swayed slightly, realising there was still a sluggish trickle of blood leaking from his side. Groaning, he started to tip forward again when a strong pair of hands grabbed him. He hadn't even noticed anyone come inside.
"We need to find you some assistance. I would give you the Mask to put on again but I think it will be more useful for me to carry you."
Link looked up into the white eyes of Fierce, his vision going in and out as he did. He…felt very solid. More solid than he had before. If he squint, could he see the mask? No, it looked like the god except… "Why are you so…" The words slurred in his mouth and he leaned forward into Fierce, eyes closing.
"The man put the Mask on. Not very smart, honestly. No one will mourn his loss."
"Whadda ya–"
"Shush, I will find the nearest fairy fountain and you will be fine." The strong arms of the god scooped up the battered hero easily and carried him outside. Link considered the notion of him being fine and found it was probably true. For now anyway. He murmured something and leaned up against the armor, not even carrying that the metal was not in any way comfortable. It was at least vaguely cool and it felt good against his aching head.
"Sorry…couldn't fight better."
"You did well. With me to help you, you will do even better."
"Thanks." With a sigh, the Hero of Time closed his eyes and let the strange being carry him away into the night. He'd have to ask about the solidity thing later but for now…for now he would rest and let himself be tended to. As the two moved through the forest, he slept knowing, at least this time, he would wake up to see another day.
The god moved easily in this new vessel, holding the one he had shared a fragment of himself with. Link would perhaps not agree with his methods of gaining a body but it mattered little. He was able to save the man who already meant so much to him. No one would hurt the Hero of Time while he was here to keep an eye on him.
After all, he was the Fierce Deity. And should anyone cross him, they would find out exactly what that meant.

UNTOLD MYTHS
A collection of Legend of Zelda fanprojects (stories, art, hypothetical game mechanics). Expand for info + links to first chapters of storylines. (AO3)
About:
Untold Myths is a blog for me to post all sorts of my little LoZ-related ideas just to get used to that sort of thing. There's so many of them that I couldn't name the blog after just one, so I made a collective name for the group of ideas I'll be showing here.
This fun little "project", if you could call it that, is sort of like a practice run for actual game making in the future. It's also a way for me to share the same fan made LoZ iterations I've been drawing for quite some time. Some of them are connected in certain ways, some not.
Some stories will be longer than others.
If you aren't one of those people obsessed with the Zelda timeline, that's fine! That isn't a main focus here. If you are, then I will specify that Untold Myths features stories based all over the place. Some are in the same general continuities as the games, having had similar events play out (although not always exactly the same), and others are alternative timelines from the very beginning.
Background:
For the last three years or so, I've really gotten into making games. And given I've always loved The Legend of Zelda, it was only inevitable that these two obsessions would converge at one point. I have been sketching and writing out ideas for little LoZ fan games for a while now, and I am finally ready to post some of them!
That being said, some ideas (I really gotta find a better word for them since they're fan games but I likely won't ever actually program them or share them because Nintendo might not appreciate that) are more developed than others, but they'll all have names to differentiate their stories and such.
What you'll see:
Concepts for hypothetical LoZ fangames or comics.
Doodles, sketches, character art, etc of said ideas.
Small writings or comics relating to these ideas.
Theoretical game mechanics for the fun of it.
Tons of LoZ AUs or ATs, basically. I really like making character-driven stuff or whatever is fun to draw.
For anyone who is a fan of Zelink or just ships in general, there's... Going to be a lot (but I try not to make it overtake actual plot or character elements).
Whatever other nonsense comes to mind at like 3 AM.
If there are any questions, the asks are open to be answered at any time! There is also a Discord server. If you would like an invitation, DM @nocturnalfandomartist.
(I may edit this post as questions come up).

Legend of Zelda oc
Denalli (kinda? updated version)
The picrew no longer works but I'm still going to link it anyway
<=> Afab with they/them pronouns
<=> 18-19 in botw, 22-23 in totk (don’t try to tell me at least a few years haven’t passed between the two games. Riju and Tulin both aged by like maybe three or four years)
<=> Has long, wavy brunette hair (think botw zelda length) that seems to always be up in a ponytail with bangs in a middle part, long enough to frame their face and hazel eyes
<=> Was born and raised in Hateno Village
<=> Raised by farmers (because it’s Hateno Village) and was closer to their dad rather than their mom
<=> Enjoys traveling over Hyrule despite the monsters and impending release of the calamity trapped within the castle
<=>Finds the scenery beautiful
<=> Travels by foot due to a horse accident they had at a young age
<=> The horse accident occurred when they were 10, they went out with some of the other kids in the village to try and get their own wild horse
<=> Denalli went second after the first kid was success in taming one, however they weren’t lucky and got thrown off, hitting their head on a nearby rock
<=> They were knocked unconscious and when they finally came to, Denalli was blind, only able to see blurs of color in daylight
<=> Eventually, they got their eyesight back but it’s not 100%, needs glasses, frequently have headaches and will not go near horses now
<=> Once, they stopped at the Dueling Peaks Stable, crossed paths with the young twins and almost immediately became bombarded with facts about horses, how to successfully tame one, and questions about why they don’t have one, then proceeded to basically get bullied by the children for unsuccessfully taming a horse when they were young
<=> Safe to say they don’t stop there anymore if it’s possible
<=> Growing up, they were amazing at archery because of the bokoblins that stayed in the woods just outside of the village’s entrance
<=> When they got their eyesight back after the accident, their depth perception was awful and regressed in their archery skill
<=> They used the frustration that came from being set back as motivation to improve once again and succeed, retraining themself around their new depth perception
<=> Aside from their skill with a bow and arrows, they’re rather terrible at hand to hand combat and using swords
<=> Has scars littering their body from attempts at close combat against fellow villagers
<=> Has not given up on training in such, but has half accepted that they most likely will not get better than what they currently are, not agile enough
<=> Also doesn’t want to risk breaking their glasses
<=> Some of the current village children are actually better than they are
<=> Wounds their ego a bit but they’re proud of the kiddos nonetheless
<=> Denalli does in fact have a bit of an ego, however they won’t be a dick, usually tries to not act on the ego
<=> When they were a couple years younger and had just started traveling, they had ventured to Kakariko Village and spotted the stealth armor and considered buying it, but at the time they didn’t have enough rupee’s to make the purchase
<=> This lead to Denalli making their on stealth armor, which, the first one wasn’t that great, but they have sense made a better one and hasn’t bothered to buy the one that is in Kakariko Village despite now having the rupee’s to do so
<=> Their homemade clothes black tights on their upper and lower body, sleeves going down their arms and connecting around their middle finger (I forgot what it’s actually called so I hope that makes sense), and a green and beige cover… thing… (it's not really necessary to the clothing but it does help keep them warmer in cooler weather)
<=> They’ve traveled all across the regions except to Goron City and it’s surrounding land
<=> The lava is a bit too hot for them, understandably
<=> Makes frequent trips to Rito Village and Zora Domain, traveling to Gerudo Town much less frequently, due to the temperature and rarely getting gems to sell or have jewelry made
<=> Has thought of training with the Gerudo, however, they’re somewhat intimidated by and envious of them.
<=> The intimidation and envy stems from their strength and close-range fighting skills, but they don’t admit that
<=> Despite it being a bit cold, Denalli enjoys visiting Rito Village, the atmosphere and view is worth the slight chill they get
<=> Zora Domain also has lovely scenery, but they just enjoy Rito’s view more
<=> Has asked the one mother Rito in the village for cooking tips, even asked for her to teach them a few recipes, but they still somehow mess up dishes in some way, making the food inedible
<=> They have encountered quite a few members of the yiga clan, much to their annoyance
<=> Was successful in defeating them, but not without a few cuts and bruises to show for it
<=> Denalli has recently begun to craft their own bows and arrows, and while they’re not great and there’s much more room for improvement, the weapons they craft are functional, kind of…
<=> Has come across, as well as paid to open, the Great Fairy Fountain’s and stops to talk with the fairies whenever they cross paths while traveling
<=> Has also spotted the dragons in their respective locations when on the move to get to the closest inn or intended destination
<=> Denalli just stands when they see the creatures and simply marvels at them
<=> Came across the hot spring in the snowy desert by pure luck and was absolutely thrilled to find out that it existed
<=> When they were young, Denalli’s father would tell them tale’s that his parents and grandparents told him about Link, the hero of Hyrule and Princess Zelda
<=> They wanted to be like Link, strong with an important role and able to kick butt in the name of protecting Hyrule
<=> But as they grew older and became more skilled in some areas, they realized that though it was a position of great honor to protect the princess and play a part of protecting the kingdom, it was also a lot of responsibility and they just weren’t ready for that, so they settled for being a simple traveler who kicks monster ass along the way
<=> Denalli also found themself looking up to Zelda more as time went on, because not only was she to take on ruling the kingdom one day, but she was also hungry for knowledge, to try understanding most, if not everything, about what was around her in the world
<=> They grew to respect and admire the two individuals from childhood stories
<=> They have bumped into Link quite a few times since he awoke from the shrine of resurrection, but it wasn’t until their sixth encounter with the blonde that the description from the stories of him clicked in their mind that they were the same person from the tales
<=> The most that came from the encounters, early on, were one helping the other in some way, giving a single nod and or grunt in thanks, possibly heading the same way for a bit then parting ways
<=> But as the chance meetings grew in number, so did a bit of a friendship.
<=> They’re not close-close, but one or the other have been known to go off track of their destination while lost in a conversation.
<=> And when both happen to spot each other in Hateno? They tend to hang out a bet more.
<=> Okay, so they’re relatively good friends.
<=> When the totk bit of timeline kicks in, they offer to help Link in any way he needs (as long as it doesn’t involve a horse)
<=> Had seen “Zelda” in some of their travels, but was utterly confused by “her” behavior being different from when the princess was staying in Hateno to now
<=> And their body seemed to naturally be on defense when spotting “her”

Finished chapter 4. I'll keep my thoughts brief. Don't worry. They're mostly positives this time.
Of course, trying to keep it vague enough, but spoilers ahead.
First, the positives.
This was by far the most interesting mystery out of the entire game. The intricacies, the careful planning, the mastermind reveal. All of it worked perfectly. Even when I figured out where it was going, I was still surprised and impressed with the overall solution.
Also, Vivia Twilight?
BEST BOY BEST BOY BEST BOY BEST BOY BEST BOY BEST BOY BEST BOY BEST BOY BEST BOY BEST BOY BEST BOY BEST BOY BEST BOY BEST BOY
I adored his development this chapter and loved how his Forte and personal convictions and worldview influenced the investigation. I can't really describe anything about it without spoiling too much, but like, damn, he's worth the $60 price tag. I can see why the one side NPC fell in love. Vivia is just AMAZING.
Also, this was probably Shinigami's best outing. She was still her usual self, but she also met her match in Vivia, and the overall story really started getting to her in a way the other cases didn't. So when the culprit reveal happened and she reaped the soul, it made sense why it went the way it did. And I found myself getting a bit emotional over this culprit along with all the detectives.
That being said, I'm still rather disappointed in the lack of true comradery between Yuma and the other detectives, as well as the lack of character conflict between the Nocturnal Detective Agency and the Peacekeepers. Most of the characters still feel like they're just kind of there, especially the villains. And that leaves everything feeling rather bare bones without even scraps to nibble on.
It might sound weird, but I think what hinders this game is the fact that you don't really interact with anyone outside of the main mystery and the Gab mechanic, and that mechanic is easy to pass over if you don't find all the statues and don't actively go out of your way to find them all. If they had made Kanai World more of an open box to explore like, say, a Legend of Zelda or Assassin's Creed game, where you unlock certain cases and interact with certain characters based on certain conditions and are encouraged to explore the world, I think I would have found the emotional core of this chapter more hard hitting.
Give me side quests where you go undercover with Desuhiko more and master a relationship meter or something similar.
Give me side quests where you and Halara take on cold cases and you work on paying off your debt to them you incur in chapter 2.
Go on more adventures with Fubuki to unlock certain districts in Kanai Ward and learn more about the outside world.
Give me lore based adventures with Yakou and Vivia, who are supposed to have this strong bond based on the emotional core of this chapter.
And make it so that your choices can affect how you go through the Mystery Labyrinth in the main story chapter. Have the Master Detectives come with you and actually have them help more with the investigations in there because as it stands, the only ones who really justified being there were Vivia and Halara, but that had to do more with the story rather than the gameplay.
I really, really want to love this game, but overall it feels empty. It easily could have been an 80-120 hour game if given the time and resources, and I feel like it would be all the better for it.
Hopefully chapter 5 sticks the landing because from my understanding, it's the final chapter, and I'm really hoping that it keeps improving where chapter 4 left us.
Overall, if I had to rank all of the chapters so far from best to worst, it'd look something like this:
Chapter 4: The Imperfect Insider
Chapter 2: A Silent Curtain Call
Chapter 0 and Prologue: Massacre on the Amaterasu Express/the WDO vs Amaterasu Corperation
Chapter 1: The Nail Man Killings
Chapter 3: No Longer a Detective (Chapter 3 curse lives on)
To be honest, I think I would have gladly waited another two or three years for Rain Code if it were filled with more than what we got.
As of right now, the only reasons I would say to get this game as is would be because of Yuma, Halara, Vivia, and the music. Otherwise, it might be better to wait until it's on sale.
Here's hoping chapter 5 stays on the upward trajectory and sticks the landing.

My Top 5 Nintendo Switch Games
Took a while longer for this to come out than I expected because of some other stuff in the way but here it is! My first video game review on Tumblr for all to see! Can’t believe it has been 6 years with the Switch as of quite recently on Friday, March 3rd. The system is still going quite strong and I have had so many wonderful adventures and enjoyed my time with each and every game that I currently own for it very much, especially the major single player games and multiplayer games with my friends over the years. I still remember the hassle it was to get one of these back in April 2017. I had to end up waiting a month more than most. It was all worth it in the very end and here’s to hoping for more good times in the future as the console continues to chug along. Looking forward to Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Pokemon Scarlet and Violet DLC as well as more for Nintendo Switch Online! I figured I would take the time to review my Top 5 Favorite Games for the system thus far. All the entries are based off of my personal experiences and are scored with a 1 to 10 star system. 1 star being the worst and 10 stars being the best. Rating System:
1. ★ - Completely Unplayable
2. ★★ - Terrible
3. ★★★ - Mediocre
4. ★★★★ - OK
5. ★★★★★ - Bittersweet
6. ★★★★★★ - Alright
7. ★★★★★★★ - Decent
8. ★★★★★★★★ - Great
9. ★★★★★★★★★ - Excellent
10. ★★★★★★★★★★ - Amazing
Reviews:
1. Pokemon Legends: Arceus 9/10 ★★★★★★★★★
A true contender for one of my top favorite game of all time thus far on the Switch. I know it's not very original to say, but I really feel like this is an extremely good take for Pokemon's stab at their version of Breath of the Wild. I feel like Game Freak honestly went all out for this and were given complete creative freedom and took their time with everything. The game is truly a masterpiece in my eyes that is a nothing short of a love letter to veterans of the series! The story, atmosphere, graphics, music, and characters all bundle up for a nice package of what Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl should of been with this prequel visit to the past version of Sinnoh from the fan favorite games of Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum called Hisui. I remember not being that fond of Legends: Arceus at first and being intimidated by the game's style and tone. I didn't complete the game until May of last year, which is unusual as I normally find myself completing most Pokemon games within a week or less. The story is really good. The tone is something that I want to praise from the start. It was truly something when I was being told that Pokemon are vicious creatures out in the wild and that they can kill you! The characters are really fleshed out with personality as well, including actual emotions for your player character, something that wasn't present in X and Y, Sun and Moon, and Sword and Shield or that wasn't simply able to be conveyed with sprite artwork before it. I love how much of the cast is implied to be ancestors of some of the present day humans in Pokemon such as Komado being related to Professor Rowan. It is really up to the imagination of you for some of the other less obvious character parallels. Even the small handful of new Pokemon that are introduced such as Enamorus being a fourth member of the former Forces of Nature trio of Tornadus, Thundurus, and Landorus. It makes the whole world of Pokemon feel more connected. All of this is something I wish Game Freak would do more often. The plot feels like it is something that comes out of the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games with Komado banishing you from Jubilife Village toward the climax of the game and being shunned. I also didn't expect Volo (Cynthia's ancestor) to be the final boss, especially given his kind nature throughout the game. Had I not looked at accidental thumbnails on YouTube spoiling his role, I wouldn't of known the whole time until my completion of the game. There are also several references in the games that are callbacks to the games of old and even get to use for the first time such as the Red Chain, which is what Cyrus originally had woven to shackle Dialga and Palkia atop the Sinnoh's Mt. Coronet in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum. My one gripe with the game is the controls aren't exactly ideal. It's the only thing that is holding it back from a perfect 10/10. I did find myself occasionally pressing the wrong button and having a hard time with shuffling through the menus quickly. But please do not let my experiences with this be a deciding factor if you are reading this and possibly looking to purchase the game. I've seen people do a lot better than myself with it all. Legends is honestly something that I believe truly caters to everyone from the casual player to a hardcore gamer (I myself find myself being a blend of both leaning toward casual). The side quests are very fun and can range from anything to a collectathon of Spiritomb Wisps to completing a Dex entry for a certain Pokemon. I found myself ending with over 60 hours in total and that's with not even completing all that the game has to offer, including getting the coveted Shiny Charm for 100% completing the Dex. The final fights of Volo, Giratina, and Arceus are all something that offer a great challenge alone. All in all, it is a game that I can highly recommend to many people, even those that want to get into Pokemon games for the first time (although I may want to lean those new and uneducated toward Let's Go, Pikachu! and Eevee!). Thank you for sticking with me!
2. Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: 10/10 ★★★★★★★★★★
There's a lot about Breath of the Wild that I can say that hasn't been said elsewhere, so I'll make this review a little bit shorter than the others for sure. The latest installment in the Legend of Zelda series, at least as of this writing with Tears of the Kingdom on the way in later May, is something truly of wonder! I remember getting this as my first ever Switch game back in April of 2017, a month later than most for sure because of the console being so hard to find. The fact that they throw you out in the world after the Great Plateau and that you are able to go in any direction is something pratically unheard of back in the day for games like these. A huge props to the Director of the game, Hidemaro Fujibayashi, Producer Eiji Aonuma as well as the rest of the developers for making it all into one nice giant open world. The game's objective itself is very clear. You are tasked to stop Calamity Ganon from rising once again after being held dormant inside Hyrule Castle for 100 years. You have to free the Divine Beasts from the malice that Ganon has invested them with. While not the greatest story ever written by any means, it all comes together super nicely and gets the message across! The music, while absent for most of the game in the field and only around at certain parts of the game, is there and when it happens, hits like a truck with emotional feelings you get toward all the characters in the story including Link and Zelda themselves, those that passed in the previous Calamity such as the pilots of the Divine Beasts as well as those still living. My only one criticism of the game is the lack thereof of enemy diversity. You mostly will find yourself fighting the same types of foes over and over again such as Moblins and Bokobolins. In short, I feel they nailed everything else about the game pretty much to a tee! I spent nearly 200 hours exploring all the nook and crannies with great fun and doing every single sidequest (with some help from a guide). This is coming from a Zelda fan nowadays who actually just got into the games with Breath of the Wild and only had minimal experience with Ocarina of Time for the 3DS all the way back in 2012. Something to totally pick up if you like Action-Adventure games and are new to the series or are even a returning veteran that is tired of the same old things from Zelda. The theme is all about breaking conventions and redefining the gameplay of a longstanding video game franchise, something the team over at Nintendo EPD did very well and right!
3. Pokemon Sword and Shield: 6/10 ★★★★★★★
I'm going to say something rather bold here in being that Sword and Shield are not as bad as everyone thinks. I feel that the games are constantly being berated for introducing a much hated mechanic of "Dexit", a term commonly used to associate the game with not having a National Dex. The first time that a controversal move has been done since back in the day when Ruby and Sapphire prevented trading of Pokemon from older games to the then current hardware. That being said, I feel like in order to fully enjoy the games, one has to purchase the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra Expansion Passes which add 210 older Pokemon in both of the two parts of the game for a total of 664 monsters in the games. I feel like looking back at it all, the base content has a couple of merits going for it. The Max Raid Battles introduced as a Raid Battle-like mechanic from Pokemon GO are very engaging. I found myself doing them on my own and with my younger cousin sometimes every single time that the Pokemon Company International promoted Shiny Pokemon to seldomly be featured in Raid Battles. I gathered up nearly 200 hours in Sword by the time right before Scarlet and Violet came out. Though the fact you can't see the Shiny Pokemon in the overworld like you could in Let's Go, Pikachu! and Eevee! is very upsetting. While Max Raids are much slower and more mindless compared to their sequel Tera Raid Battles in Scarlet and Violet, I feel like the simplicity is something that has it's charms. The Dynamax mechanic is pretty neat and I really like how some of the Pokemon change appearance in their giant state in a special version called Gigantamax, much like Mega Evolution from before. The designs for many of them are great such as the Kanto Starter's Final Evolutions. There are many little things about the game that I find very nice that carried over from the Generation VII games or were introduced as new altogether. The Exp. Candies, the Exp. Share always being on and not being an item, and Pokemon Box Link are part of the many things that make everything streamlined and have me feel spoiled compared to what we had back in the older days. It is truly something that once you start realizing the pleasures, you never want to go back to ways of old. The story isn't anything special. I feel Team Yell is less antagonistic and don't have as much depth. Piers, their Leader, may have been able to be executed better as a character and Rose, the main villain at the climax, was something that wasn't too surprising or exciting. Basically a beloved and highly respected authority figure that is corrupt in the end. Something I feel like I've seen before and not just with Pokemon... The player characters not having much expression to them in the few cutscenes was also a little bit of a let down. The DLC I feel adds a tiny bit more such as Regieleki and Regidrago, which I'm truly fond of for them adding to the existing Regi trio, a practice I hope is more common. Tying back to my Legends of Arceus review a couple sections above, it makes the world feel more intertwined. The amount of Regional Variants was a very solid number, unlike Scarlet and Violet's measly 4, as much as I hate to draw parallels again to a future game, especially one that has yet to release it's DLC at the time of writing. I didn't find the games as challenging as some of the other older entries. The fact there is no Elite Four and it is instead foregoed for the Champion Cup, is quite disappointing. You get your Pokemon healed between every match. The music itself is always a thing that they nail. I found myself really enjoying many of the battle themes and ambient tracks within the games. I still find myself listening to the songs on repeat to this day. Graphics themselves could of been a little bit stronger than the Sun and Moon HD version that we were given. In closing, I feel while the games are somewhat bland and don't stand out as much, they're still something that can't be ignored. For that, I give "Alright" 6 out of 10.
4. Animal Crossing: New Horizons: 7/10 ★★★★★★★
Animal Crossing: New Horizons will always hold that dark place in the hearts and minds of everyone as the one game that came out right in the peak of the COVID-19 Pandemic in March of 2020. It got popular very quickly. For me, it was a big bright spot and huge time sink of over 280 hours of fun in my life as everything I had going on in life was canceled due to the obvious elephant in the room. As unoriginal as it may sound, it really helped me through a very difficult time and I'm not just talking about COVID-19 either. I had a couple of life issues that were rearing their ugly head in when this was all going on. So, therefore, I will always have a soft spot in my heart for this cute title. Now for the game itself. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a game where you are a human in a sea of anthropomorphic animals and try to adapt to life on a formerly deserted island as part of a getaway package. It is a perfect escape for many people at the time! You get complete and total creative freedom on what you get to do with the island after the first 7 days of tutorials with the game somewhat holding your hand and teaching you the ropes of everything such as the brand new and essential crafting system. The biggest thing of the game is being able to transform the island by destroying and creating cliffs and rivers using a terraforming feature. This is the stuff that dreams are made of, especially for veterans! You can do just about anything you want. No Isabelle telling you that the item is too close to another thing. Other mechanics such as the bug catching, diving, fossil collecting, and fishing all remain pretty much the same, which isn't a bad thing by any means. You don't have to fix what isn't broken. It is the parts I just mentioned along with terraforming that I found the most addicting. It felt so gratifying to fill in the museum and give Blathers all of the stuff that you've collected from your various times booting up the game and doing the morning routine (or whatever time you play). Coming from someone who has never 100% the Museum and used Action Replay to fill it in for Wild World all the way back, I will have a fond memory of earning bragging rights by finishing the fossil section on my Birthday in October 2020. This is about where the positives end though. The lack of some of the special characters that series veterans have come to known and love (or hate) such as Gracie, Mr. Resetti, and even some of the villagers themselves is rather unacceptable. I mean, I totally understand Mr. Resetti, but still, Gracie and some of the other villagers as well as even the special themed items such as the Zelda and fortune cookie prizes from New Leaf, felt like a huge slap in the face and what is holding the game down from being the best that it can be and for what the series is formerly known for. The game itself fell on hard times after 2021 when things in the world slowly started to get better. Nintendo very quickly dropped support for the game by stopping with the big updates. The Happy Home Paradise DLC that released in November 2021 marks the very beginning of the end. While my Grandmother who also enjoyed the video game as much as I did and got endless amounts of hours (I'm talking over 1,000 or more) from the game, I played for a little while after the update. Being able to play with my Grandmother, Mom, and Sister will always be a special time that I will treasure. My Grandma hadn't played a video game ever before and seeing the joy on her face and getting just as engaged as I was for a time was truly something special. But perhaps, attributing to my getting of a job in February 2022 and with things getting better with COVID-19, I had stopped playing the game as quickly as I started. It's still so sad to see that Nintendo is not supporting it to this day with bigger updates. It would of been very nice. But alas, it wasn't meant to be. For all of these various reasons, I rate the game a "Decent" 7 out of 10. It is still worth picking up if you like Sims but want the game to be full of bipedal talking animals.
5. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet: 8/10 ★★★★★★★★
There's a lot that I can say really good and also really bad about Scarlet and Violet. The games are really great if they are not bogged down by the various performance issues such as the framerate, the constant crashing, and other bugs and glitches that are abound in the game. Thankfully, many of these issues and gripes have been fixed in Version 1.2.0 and other patches and updates going forward. I however, will forever remember not enjoying the games as much as their predecessors of Sword and Shield. I found myself playing more in Handheld Mode than with the TV mode I am used to because of the framerate being slightly better. The game has it's high highs but it also has it low lows. I feel that what it tries to do, it does really well. Such as the story. Seriously, first Legends of Arceus then this! The Professor(s) being an AI controlled copy turning evil and corrupt is something that I didn't foresee. When exploring Area Zero for the first time with the Arven, the son of the Professor(s), Penny, and Neoma, I literally had my heart skip a beat when I heard the Professor have a glitch in her voice (I was playing Scarlet, so it was Professor Sada). I played the entire game blind for the most part. This is probably why the review is as high as it is at a 7 out of 10 (and I also would like to rate it a little bit higher than the 6/10 I was to give upon replaying the game a little bit after Version 1.2.0's release). I feel like the entire story was well executed even with Team Stars not being "evil" per say. They are pretty much like a Team Yell 2.0, and that's not too much of an improvement but still better than what we got in the previous games for sure! The music is something else that I really like! Toby Fox and the many other composers who worked on the soundtrack really hit it out of the park! I find myself playing lots of the themes on YouTube on repeat such as the battle themes and the Area Zero theme. The Professor's final battle theme with the tone it sets is truly something I will never forget! My other issues include not being able to battle the Trainers on sight like we are normally used to and not being able to rematch the Elite Four at the League. I found myself missing a lot of Trainers and having to go back. The other more major thing though was the Gym Leaders not being scaled with your progress in the game like how the Wild Area was in Sword and Shield. I made a plan of the order in which I wanted to defeat the Gym Leaders in the game only to realize that it was actually set in the end with Katy being the lowest and Grusha being the highest. The Gym challenges themselves aren't that special. I found Katy's Gym being the most frustrating and annoying with rolling the olive ball through the course. Finally, the new Pokemon themselves are truly a blend of both good designs and some, not so great. Upon looking at some of them for the first time, I thought many didn't change much when they evolved such as Tandemaus line only getting two more little mice in the second evolution and Brambleghast only becoming a bigger cactus upon evolving. Some of the designs however, are very original and stuff based off of creatures we've never seen in the Pokemon world before such as Flamigo being based on a flamingo! The new Evolutions for Girafarig, Primeape, Dunsparce, and Bisharp are particularly nice! Kingambit is my personal favorite of the select few Evolutions of some of our beloved species. I found myself getting one for the team right away. Overall, I feel Scarlet and Violet are a lot of good but missed potential. Had the game not been put down by the issues before Version 1.2.0, it would of been a strong launch. The Gym Leaders being scaled with the progression of the Badges you collect, would of made it nearly perfect. I hope to revise this score upward with upcoming Expansion Pass. Thanks for reading!
Upon revisiting the land of Paldea and later the new land of Kitakami followed eventually by a return to Unova (albeit at the Blueberry Academy located faraway from the mainland) in the DLC Expansion Pass, I would like to revise my overall score for Scarlet and Violet to an 8/10 "Great". I found myself very happy with being able to visit both Kitakami and the Blueberry Academy along both the fresh new takes and nostalgia it had to offer. While I feel that Kitakami was lackluster after the plot was finished there and left me desiring more. The Blueberry Academy on the other hand hit the nail on the head with many features that I wanted with customization of odds and ends of the game such as your Poke Ball throwing style, redecorating the League Room, and being able to glide with Koraidon or Moraidon (depending on your version of choice)! I also found myself enjoying the various throwbacks to the Generation V Pokemon Black and White (and their sequels) games set in the mainland of Unova. While the story was excuted well in both Part 1 and Part 2 (including the Epilogue) of the DLC, I feel it wasn't as strong as the main campaign itself. But that's not to say that it was terrible. The teacher Briar not being a villain as everyone would of expected and being driven by the awe of Terapagos's power like a child was the real beauty. Lore itself overall was not as strong as Legends of Arceus or games prior. In closing, I feel like Scarlet and Violet, while being a mixed bag in the community, are a step in the right direction. I look forward to seeing what the future of the Pokemon series holds and the adventures that we will all have in the years to come!

Marble Hornets Matchup: Jay Merrick
Warnings: Fluff.
Anonymous Request: so i saw you do matchups, and marble hornets is on your fandom list, so i’d like to ask for a romantic, Marble Hornets matchup! (idm gender for the matchup)
My name is Mar. I have brown hair thats a little longer than my shoulders, along with bangs and hazel eyes. Hobby wise, I’m not really sure; i suppose i like to draw and ice skate. My interests change alot because my brain cant ever focus on one thing, but currently I’m really into The Legend of Zelda Botw, Marble Hornets and The Last of Us!
My best traits are that i listen when people need me to, i try to make people laugh when i can, i try to talk to people even if I'm scared of messing up and I’m not sure what else 😅 My worst traits are that i can be very closed off when upset, I'm really sensitive, and sometimes i over explain things to make sense. sorry if this is too long.
.
.
.
After going through the description provided, I believe that you best pair well with Jay Merrick!
At first glance, Jay is actually apprehensive when meeting you. He’s shy in his own way, perhaps one might even call him adorkable, but he thinks you’re really pretty. Yet, it’s not just your looks that has him entranced.
You see, Jay is an awkward person at heart and he tends to ramble when he’s nervous. It’s rare for him to find a person who will listen to what he has to say and take him seriously. There are times when his sarcasm and quick wit get the better of him, but he truly does mean well when he gets the courage to tease you.
Please make him laugh. Life is hard and Jay has a lot on his plate for him to think about the simple things in life that make him happy. If you see that he’s feeling down or looking more closed off than usual, give him a reason to smile again. Even if your attempts don’t land, he’ll muster a smile and you can see that he isn’t as burdened as he was.
Furthermore, Jay admires your tenacity in talking to other people. He doesn’t have social anxiety, per se, but he does have a terrible track record talking to people at times. It’s hard for him to pick up on social cues so he doesn’t go out of his way to talk to people, but watching you do it sort of amazes him. It fills him with a sense of pride that you have confidence in yourself despite there being a chance where you may not succeed.
Over explain away! That’s basically Jay’s love language. Talk to him about your hobbies and interests, your insights, and feelings. The worst thing that you can do to Jay is close off parts of yourself even when he truly wants to know you better.
And speaking of closing yourself off, Jay will give you space, but please tell him if he did anything wrong. One of the best ways to maintain a relationship is to remain open about your feelings, your thoughts and desires, and definitely, what makes you tick. Your space is important, and he gets that, but he also wants to make sure that whatever hurts you or sets you off, will either never happen or won’t occur as frequently.
Overall, you’re a pretty good match for Jay! The both of you can balance each other out and you’ll probably experience a good, if a bit adorkable, relationship with him!

The moment they realized they loved you. (Isekai Au Edition) Part 1
Because this was my first time doing this I went a little crazy. If you want more information on this AU here is the Link!
Time:
- It had been welcomed with open arms.
- You two are literally the opposite but also very similar. Time is calm and stoic. You are chaotic and loud. But both of you are very cryptic.
- You’re the only person in the kingdom of hyrule currently that remembers what he had gone through. He feels like he can trust you with anything.
- It’s started with a slip up by wind and just spiraled out of control.
___________________________________
Time was discussing the groups inventory with Twilight and Wild when it happens. A small slip of the tongue followed by a laughter that could be mistaken as a fairy chime. He looked over to see your bright smile shining through under your hood. In front of you was the target of your amusement, the youngest link.
“That’s so cute!” You exclaimed to the horror of Wind, who was red in embarrassment. “Wait who’s dad?”
“Can we let this go?” The teen was covering his face now.
“It’s Time.” Four said without looking up from his book. Utter chaos broke loose in camp with just a few words. A chorus of any forms of agreement was making you laugh even harder. Time though covering up his true feelings about the situation was very lost. While yes, he acknowledged that he had slowly became the father figure of the group. That title didn’t involve you.
Unless…
“Time! I didn’t know we were married!” You bounced over to their leader looking at him with a playful smirk.
A life with you flashes in his head.
There could be a small cottage farm surrounded by the forest that reminding him of his old family and home. You could take care of the garden while he could take care the animals. In a few years the two of you might just have a few kids running around. Playing with each other without a care in the world. No more fighting. No more traveling. Just a simple lifestyle with a tight knit family. It looked peaceful. Everything he would want.
“You should have told me.” He was brought back to the present by your face looking up at him expectedly.
“I thought you knew.” He said super seriously. “We’ve got to raise nine children together already.”
“Hey! I raised you during the war old man!” Warriors called out from across camp.
“You’re the uncle then!” (Y/n) countered “I already say Twilight is our first born!” You declared pointing to Time’s flustered descendent. The rest of the conversation was tuned out as he went back to his thoughts once more.
Time lived longer than most of the heroes here by age 11. Yet not once did he stop to think about a future and family. He was so busy trying to keep out of hero work that it just slipped. Yet see you with the other heroes, knowing now that you were just as much a parental figure to the others as him. It made his softer just thinking about it and he welcomed that warm fuzzy feeling with open arms.
Reaching out he brush’s hair out of your face to kiss your temple. “I’ll propose to you properly later.” He said in a teasing tone to suggest he was only joking to hide the truth in that statement. Seeing your entire face flush red was really worth it.
“Gross Mom and Dad are flirting!”
___________________________________
- He’ll never once tell you straight if he liked you or was just playing along with the ongoing joke that the chain has.
- This time instead of you observing him. He wants to see how far he can go until confessing.
- It drives you crazy. Since you can’t get a read on him. You attempt to flirt back in retaliation. However, it always ends with you being the most flustered.
- Who knew the Old Man had it in him?
Twilight:
- It became a melancholic hopeless feeling that spiral out of control.
- He already had his heartbroken by someone before and he knows he shouldn’t get attached to you too.
- Yet he can’t stop himself from wanting to be near you. He heard you so clearly before.
- Now that he can actually speak to you directly, he wants to get to know his other travel companion more.
___________________________________
Being alone in the forest with you wasn’t what Twilight planned when dropped in a different Hyrule but here you two where. You offered to go on patrol with him when the others were setting up camp claiming it was too see if you could identify the era. It didn’t matter since Twilight enjoyed your company no matter what. The lack of conversation between the two of you didn’t bother him. If anything, it felt the most natural. Only a few words were needed for the two of you to understand each other. “Do you mind if I use my wolf form?” Twilight asked fiddling with the chain that attached to the shadow crystal around his neck.
You paused to think about it. “I mean you can. But be aware I will baby talk you.”
This got Twilight to stop walking. Maybe he lied. He doesn’t need a few words to understand your thought process. “Excuse me?”
“I can’t control myself around cute creatures.” You simply stated like it was the most obvious thing.
Instead, Twilight was burning up. You thought his wolf form was cute? Of all things you used that word? What did you think of human Twilight if you thought like that? Did he want to even know? He was searching for any way to take this conversation but it all lead to dead ends. “Cute?” Was all he could ask. His voice pitching up as he got flustered.
“Yeah?” You looked at him just as confused as he was. “Wolves are just like big dogs and to be honest you look more like a giant dog then a wolf.” Your explanation did not help at all with his situation. “If it makes you feel better you’re very handsome as a Hylian and also built like an go-“
Twilights brain was malfunctioning he couldn’t hear any more of what you had to say about him. He grabbed on to the shadow crystal, turning into his wolf form he ran. He didn’t hear you call out his name in surprise.
Hylia, what was wrong with him? You were just a friend. A very blunt yet gentle friend. Nothing more. Nothing less. Why was his heart racing so much? He had heard you shower him in complements before while on his first adventure. But hearing you say it to his face with no shame whatsoever was a different story.
Twilight knew what these feelings were and deep down he really wanted to act on them. But was it ok? Was his heart finally healing from his last love? Twilight was already aware this time that you had to leave at some point. He didn’t need to act on them despite wanting to. He could just be your friend and continue the relationship like that.
His heart was already breaking a second time.
Twilight was in love you and it was driving him crazy.
___________________________________
- Like Time, Twilight isn’t going to tell you about his feelings. Instead, he is going to forever pine for you.
- It’s going to be a slow process and you need to be aware that he will get hurt if you’re going to go back home.
- He’ll see you off with a smile, but as soon as your gone he will break.
Warriors:
- It was full of denial and fear.
- He went through the receiving end of someone’s obsessive love.
- And it doesn’t help that you’ve watched over their adventures. He vowed to not get that close to you.
- There was a need to destroy the endearing feeling he sees when you smile at him.
- Yet seeing you with a sad far out look on your face makes him scramble to your side to find out what’s wrong.
___________________________________
It was just the two of you. Weaving throughout the crowds of castle town. You were currently in Four’s Era and in the middle of the Picori festival. The group was long spilt up, leaving Warriors alone with the dimensional traveler. Soon even (Y/n) was walking away from him. He didn’t know why he followed, the argument in his head was telling him that it was so they didn’t get lost. Yet there was a part of him that knew that wasn’t it.
“Where are you going anyway?” He thought to finally ask as you reached a quieter area. “It’s going to be hard to spend time in the festival from here.”
“Yeah, that’s the point.” You were a bit snappy today, “shouldn’t you find someone else to hang out with?” Warriors just shrugged as you slowed your pace down to pause in front of the small river that ran through castle town. The silence now filled with the rushing of water as you sat on the bridge.
Against his better judgement Warriors sat next to you. Finally, he got to talk to you one on one but the normally impulsive and excitable person Warrior’s grew to expect had changed in that moment.
You looked so tired.
“Hey Link?” You finally called out to him “I know I shouldn’t ask you this but…” hesitation was new to your character. “How do I even start?” You rake a hand through your hair. Sweeping a part of your hair out of your eyes. “Was I ever helpful during your Adventure?”
Oh… Oh he really wasn’t the right person for this talk.
You look back you and towards the festival and he followed your gaze. From where they were he could only spot a few of his party members. Wind was with Legend and Hyrule playing some of the stall games. While Four was with his Zelda holding hands as she pulled him further into the crowd. “Last time I saw this festival it ended up destroyed by Vaati.” The wind mage was only brought up a few times by Four. All Warriors really knew was that the villain was supposed to be sealed away by the Four Sword, and that his power was connected by the dark mirror. “I found myself wondering if my presence even mattered.” Your shoulder slumped in defeat as you curled into yourself.
The instant need to comfort shot through Warriors. He wanted to reach out. He fought the urge to hold you. He bites his tongue when he started to think of embellished words to make you feel better.
What was wrong with him?
Warriors had to say something though. “I don’t know about Four or the others.” He didn’t even think about your presence in his adventure too much. If anything, he actively tried not to think about it. Here you were though a person and not a figment of in his imagination. “During the war, your voice and presence is what broke the tension. The moments that could have been my lowest, you were there saying things that I wanted to repeat out loud.” There was a fondness while he was looking back at the memories. From the moment he ran on the battle field foolishly as a trainee soldier. His pride grew upon hearing your praise and surprise when seeing him fight for the first time. To your excitement while meeting his friends from the other Eras. He shared your sentiments about Mask as you cooed over the child as Warriors fought by his side. Then your anger, disgust and pity towards Cia. While on his side, your empathetic nature had you morning during her passing. These where just the tip of the iceberg.
Just having someone voice out mutual thoughts on a situation helps when you can’t do it on your own. You feel crazy thinking the way you do. “With you there it’s like you always have someone by your side cheering you on and supporting you.” He paused to look at you. Conflicting emotions clashing together. You turn to look at him, your eyes only briefly visible through your bangs. Curiosity and guilt were swarming with in them. “I’m not the person to talk to about this.” He finally admitted out loud. “But I would be lying if I said your presence wasn’t important to us.”
The silence that followed was deafening. Was that not what he was supposed to say? Warriors tried to stay calm under your gaze.
You let out a huff of laughter covering your mouth and turning away from him a bit to calm down. “I didn’t think about it like that.” There was a pause where you looked back at the festive before turning back to smiling softly at him. “Thanks Cap.”
The smile that you had on your lips had Warriors stomach do back flips. A blush decorated his face as he turns away. “It’s something that should have been said a while ago.” He manages to say without stuttering.
You were really pretty.
The sound of a picto box followed by winds snickering, was ignored when the thought had just register in his head. He finally realized how far he fell for you.
___________________________________
- one by one his defenses lowered.
- With every smiled sent his way, with every laugh that he earned. He found himself wanting more.
- He slowly opens up, a slow process but it wasn’t as scary as he thought it was going to be.
- A teasing nickname here. A gentle touch there. He realizes he has gone too far.

Okay, so you mentioned that Wild was another favorite... Headcanons please? [Watch me just keep doing this until I see every single boy get headcanons XD]
Yeah so I'm just gonna keep doing these lol. Let's see if I can get through all the boys by the end of the weekend.
Wild Headcanons!
As before, here’s the giant mis-mash of canon/LU canon/fanon/headcanon that I use for writing Wild.
Genderfluid. Defaulted to ‘he’ after waking up because it’s what everyone around him assumed, got slapped in the face in Gerudo Town with how good it felt to be called ‘she.’ Zelda knows to use ‘she’ when Wild is dressed a certain way, but it’s Hyrule who brings up the idea of being gender neutral and Warriors who introduces them both to the term ‘genderfluid’ and to using ‘they’ as a pronoun. Basically, Wild is slowly collecting pronouns like candy and it’s very exciting. They can’t wait to share the new things they’ve discovered on the topic and how they think it applies to them with Zelda; she’ll be just as happy about it as they are. Still mostly defaults to ‘he’ out of a combination of habit and continuing to figure out good signals for when their pronouns change, but that is shifting as time goes on.
Functionally aro/ace, at least for now. He’s focusing on rediscovering who he is and establishing familial and platonic relationships. Will probably hit one hell of an experimental phase before too much longer.
Wild’s journey/story arc is largely one of experimentation and self discovery. Curiosity is the driving force behind most of the decisions he makes. (Along with just having fun. Wild loves to have fun.)
Adventure buddies with Hyrule. They pretty much bonded instantly over their shared love of exploration and nature.
Has lots of similarities with Wind even though they don’t see eye to eye on certain topics. (Kings of Hyrule, anyone?) When Wild is feeling their silliest or just needs to have some fun to let off steam, Wind is the one they turn to.
Slightly intimidated by Warriors and Sky. Warriors seems a model knight, something Wild feels he failed to be and maybe even slightly resents. Sky also talks about being in the Knight Academy, and of course there was the whole thing with the Master Sword. Wild very much does not want Sky to get mad at him again. Nobody likes it when Sky is mad at them.
Obviously has strong familial feelings towards Twilight, and by extension Time
Has sass, generally more positive than Legend but not afraid to throw hands
Occasionally has depressive episodes and the memory-flashbacks
Wild doesn’t actually cook all the groups’ meals. He’s not the only one who is competent around a cook pot, he’s just the most passionate about it. And also the one who keeps most of the group’s food, given the slate’s ability to keep food fresh.
Wild is in fact very frustrated and somewhat humiliated by the shitty quality of his weapons, now that he’s seen enough of the others to know that none of them have the same issues with stuff just breaking as he does. Knowledge of how to care for and maintain weapons was not one of the things that carried over from his previous life, plus he keeps doing things like hitting frigging rocks with his blades. The others are slowly teaching him better.
Adrenaline. Junkie.
Thinks of their past self as a stranger who happened to inhabit their body. Had anxiety-induced muteness pre-calamity, began talking again after they woke up. They did retain sign language. Will occasionally default to it if their throat is paining them.
Has a bit of a rasp due to vocal chord damage that the shrine didn’t quite fix all the way; his voice starts to get tired if he does a lot of talking. The scars sometimes cause him mobility issues. The masseuse in gerudo town gave him oil for them and taught him how to massage the tissue to help, but he tends to forget to do it.
Hair is constantly tangled. He takes a stab at brushing it most days but not nearly thoroughly or often enough to keep it from turning into a horrible rats nest.
Is it gonna be fun? Great it’s a good idea let’s go.
Considers basically everybody in his Hyrule to be his family. Has adopted family in pretty much every race, village, and stable. His Hyrule loves him and he loves them back. Kass and Teba are like dads. Riju is his BFF and fellow pun enthusiast. The villagers of Hateno are especially protective of both him and Zelda once she comes to live with him there. There’s Impa and Dorian in Kakariko. Sidon and Paya are both potential Significant Other material if he ever becomes interested in that stuff. He gets fussed over in all the stables, greeted with enthusiasm in Tarrey Town and with the Gorons… Most of the citizens of his Hyrule don’t have any association between him and what happened 100 years ago, they just know him as the person who made things better this time.
Falls into a sibling relationship with their Zelda post-adventure. Neither of them have any interest in restoring the system that failed both of them so badly, especially after all the time that has elapsed. Zelda is quite happy with the opportunity to just be herself, exploring and experimenting and re-establishing relationships of her own.
One of the more religious of the group. He prays and leaves offerings at every statue, in every temple. Wild’s Hyrule has very active spirits and a large variety of religions, both ancient and current. (Hylia, the little ancestor statues all over the place, the dragons, the Gerudo seven, Malanya…) Wild’s personal experience has been that paying basic respects leads to good things (finding Koroks, increases in health and stamina, someone watching out for his horses…)
Wild takes lots of pictures, not just of people but of places and plants and animals. He’s recording his travels to show Zelda when he gets home. He knows she would kill him if he didn’t.
The others: Four | Sky | Legend | Hyrule | Warriors

LoZ AU- The Courage of Running Away Part TWENTY
I wanted to make this section a bit longer than it is but I have to go to bed earlier on Saturday nights for work and it’s a decent length anyway. On the 29th I am 35, just like The Legend of Zelda! I have been oddly giddy about this ever since realizing I’m six months younger than one of my favorite things. XD
#AU August
#LoZ AU: The Courage of Running Away
Back in Hyrule Castle Town, Princess Zelda and Gray are having a relatively normal day out about town; Zelda Jr likes to take walks around the city and particularly likes to visit the local bakeries, flower shops and the potions apothecary closest to the castle, because the younger craft witch there answers all her questions and Zelda Jr has quite a few.
[Image Description: A cute lady in a witch’s outfit and hat is gesturing to a conical flask with one gloved hand, cheerfully explaining its black, bubbling and sinister contents while Princess Zelda is listening intently, one hand to her chin thoughtfully. Gray, meanwhile, has turned very thoroughly away from them and the viewer, rubbing the back of his neck, and appears to be sweating uncomfortably. End ID.]
(Craftwitch is saying something like "but if you need this one we really recommend booking our overnight bed so we can monitor you, even if only for the emotional support")
It's while he's trying to not pay attention to the craft witch's potion explanations (they can get pretty TMI) that Gray realizes that he noticed some of the same people in the middle distance when they were at the flower shop, too, and-and wasn't that burly fellow buying a breadroll when they were at the bakery? He could swear he saw that woman with a scar at the seamstresses' place, even, where they were taking some of Link's clothes to be mended.
[Image description: A woman in her forties with a formerly broken nose and a scar on the right side of her mouth, as well as more scars on her forearms. Her left eye is brown, her right eye is bright blue. She has black hair in an undercut and ponytail and two turquoise earrings in her left ear. She is wearing brown gloves and a brown vest over a purple turtleneck with billowed sleeves, which end below the elbow. She is holding a dark golden mask by her shoulder, of a stylized fox. End ID.]
I just wanted to have an interesting looking character to draw in this role I don’t know where this character design went off the rails lol
This group of characters is loosely inspired by the fox-thieves from ALttP, and call themselves by the same name, Pikku (which apparently comes from “pickpocket” lmao). In CoRA they’re basically sellswords based in southern Hyrule and through most of Lorule. This lady is more or less the ringleader of this specific group.
Gray leans in to Zelda's side and tells her, in no uncertain terms, that they need to get back to the palace NOW, probably giving her a code word that makes it clear to her that he's noticed something wrong. Princess Zelda responds by rather loudly suggesting that she would really like to see what's going on in the apothecary workshop, and the craft witch lets them sneak through the back door in hopes of throwing off the people following them.
It gets dicey. The Pikku aren’t Shiekah, but they’ve stolen tricks from all over, and Gray is seventeen and less experienced by years, outnumbered, and trying to prioritize Princess Zelda over himself. They’re finally driven into a corner, and all Gray can do is tell Princess Zelda to hold on to him:
[Image Description: Gray uses a teleportation circle while Zelda clings to his torso as the Pikku, wearing their fox masks, are closing in. In the wake of the teleportation circle’s lingering smoke, the woman with the scar turns to the burly man, who has muttonchops that show at the sides of his mask and is covering his hair with a bandana, and says, “Well, so much for the EASY WAY.” Meanwhile, King Aldway is writing at a small desk, sitting in a high backed chair. Suddenly Gray and Zelda appear before him with a loud humming, landing from the teleportation spell. “KIDS?!” Aldway shouts, standing. Gray says, “Your majesty-” and is interrupted by Zelda, who says “Papa ALERT THE GUARDS, we were just ATTACKED-” She cuts herself off as Gray suddenly groans, curling down and grabbing onto her for support. “GRAY!!” she cries, trying to hold him up. Aldway joins them on the floor, putting a hand on Gray’s head. Gray says, ragged, “I must’ve... taken a HIT from one of them without REALIZING...” Aldway answers him soothingly, “You did WELL, son, we’ll get you an ELIXIR.” They are interrupted by a loud crash outside of Aldway’s study. End ID.]
Aldway, for the record, does actually think of Gray as his other kid.
Don’t judge my fuckin woobly teleportation circle symbols I was doing this on a time budget and just looked up the Yiga circles themselves instead of the Hylian script letters that are supposed to make them up. And the Yiga circles are fuzzy and hard to follow what the symbols are actually supposed to look like. The Yiga clan exists in CoRA but has mostly reconciled with the Royal Family because the last time Ganon appeared in this setting is based on the events of AoC.
Anyway! Sorry for it being this particular cliffhanger but this post is probably long enough!

Hey Kip, whatcha think happened to all the equipment from the other Links by BOTW time? I want to Long Shot my way through the divine beasts and use the Lens of Truth to see through the dark ruins.
Ooookay time to turn on voice to text—I apologize for my regular followers who don’t know about my Botw hyperfixation but unfortunately impulse essays are a habit. Anyhow this isn’t edited cause I’m lazy so don’t kill me
OK so long story short I think that any remnants of cast incarnations of long since gone or dead. This is because the timeline that separates breath of the wild from the rest of the Zelda timeline in my opinion spans at least thousands and thousands and thousands if not millions—actually yeah, probably millions of years. First of all if you look at the timeline more than 10,000 years would be something like 100,000. You’ve had to have hundreds of years for civilization to be established and grow into the kingdom, Plus maybe a couple more hundred to have certain tribes grow to create modern technology like the Ancient Sheikah tribe. And then you have 10,000 views between first instance of Calamity Ganon, and then another 10,000 years for the next one, and then the next one, and then the next one, until it’s become such a pattern that it can be prophesied and predicted and passed down through legend. That then leads to the era which is the rebirth of the calamity 10,100 years before the events of Breath of the Wild. This is the one with the Sheikah Technology (which again, who’s to say that that was the very first time if they ever use that technology, who knows if Ganon immediately came up with a plan to corrupt it right away after 10,000 years. What if it took him multiple cycles to come up with that plan?) and then 10,000 years after that depicted calamity, then you have the one from 100 years ago where Ganon does corrupt the Sheikah technology and uses it to kill everyone blah blah blah we all know the story.
So that’s a lot lot lot lot lot lot of time that’s honestly longer than the history of…well, history. That’s longer than recorded history. And that’s definitely longer than any period of Medieval civilization on earth. What branch of the timeline does Breath of the Wild fall into? WHO CARES? It exists in a time where any of the events from any of the branches could have happened in their own unique way over thousands and thousands of years. This timeline is so old, who’s to say it didn’t have its own Wind Waker event or Minish cap. (That’s my explanation as to why the game makes references to games in completely different timelines) 10k years alone is more than enough time for entire species to rise and fall out of existence, and you bet your ass that the cycle of destruction would make it impossible for records, artifacts, and just general knowledge to not make its way to future generations. Hell, Hyrule itself is a walking nightmare for anything trying to evolve, whether technology wise or biologically for species. The only way that anything could be known by future generations is through oral Legends (of Zelda)
So where is all this fabled equipment of heroes and of past incarnations? Probably dust fourty feet down within the earth’s crust. Eventually, they’ll probably get one. Hyrule will probably re-invent a hook shot down the line and call it new and revolutionary, not knowing that millennia before their ancestors said the very same thing. And then in a hundred years they’ll all die and be forgotten and it’s back to square one. Time’s whack.
#why did civilization not advance during the 10k time gap decpicted in the tapestry#probably because everyone got Merced by some other evil force#or maybe the king at that time just reaaaaallly didn’t like millennials and their phones#oh wait....*stares at Sheikah massacre*#botw#breath of the Wild#legend of Zelda botw#loz botw#Botw theory#long post

"Legal" Advice
As thanks for the story you gave me, @partialdignity. I love you platonically. <3
---------------------------------------
Are you sure you don’t want one of us to accompany you inside, Vy?
I’m sure, Ere-chan. Ms. Lan Yi’s been with Chaldea longer than any of us — I think I’ll be okay with her.
The Lancer Pseudo-Servant still looked less than convinced in her black dress, her hands tightly clutching the handles of her spear, but she still loosened her grip once Vy was reaching over to hold some of her fingers. Be safe then, little flower, Ereshkigal said through their bond, red eyes soft in Vy’s direction. I’ll be with the others outside.
Vy smiled while squeezing Eresh’s fingers once or twice back for good measure. Affection went places, after all. Aye. Love you too, Ere-chan. I’ll see you soon.
Vy could barely hide the giggles bubbling up in her throat at the sight of Eresh flushing enough to match a cherry, instead letting the Lancer go with a small pat to her hands before eventually turning on her heels to face that one office door in the Wandering Sea.
One step is all it takes.
Vy closed her eyes, took a breath, and gently raised her right hand to rap her knuckles against the door.
“Ms. Lan Yi?”
“…You don’t have to use the ‘Ms’ title, Vy,” called out past the door, and it was now Vy’s turn to flush a little in the face. “And there’s no need to linger. Come on in.”
The door proceeded to slide open, exposing the older woman sipping at a steaming cup of tea at her desk with an accompanying tea set and a small plate of what appeared to be mooncakes nearby. Vy tilted her head at the only other chair in the room, and Lan Yi wordlessly gestured with one hand towards it, not even pausing her tea drinking.
“Thankie then, Ms— I mean, Lan Yi,” Vy corrected herself, gently pulling the chair up to sit down. Looking up at Lan Yi didn’t really yield any insight into what she was thinking — if anything, Lan Yi seemed quiet as always as she steadily returned Vy’s stare. Vy felt her palms start to accumulate sweat as she pressed them against her lap. “Um…”
“You seem to have something on your mind,” Lan Yi said after a moment, interrupting Vy’s internal panic while putting her teacup down on the table. With a soft wave of a (very pretty) manicured hand, another teacup appeared between them on the desk, saucer and all, and Lan Yi gently took up the nearby teapot to pour tea into it. “What’s wrong, Vy?”
“N-Nothing!” Vy felt herself blurt out first, only to cower a little underneath Lan Yi’s quiet stare as the new teacup was then pushed in Vy’s direction. Heat still flooding her face, Vy ignored the instinctive urge to play with her hair, simply taking the offered cup off of Lan Yi’s hands to glance down at the surface of the liquid for a second. Then, she felt herself whisper, “I-I wanted to say ‘thank you’, actually.”
In the tea’s reflection, Vy could faintly make out Lan Yi scooting back a bit in her rolling chair, causing just enough of a scene to prompt Vy to look up for herself. Sure enough, Lan Yi was giving her a wide-eyed look that, once Vy noticed it, was already getting schooled into a neutral expression, as if the previous moment never happened. “…What brought this on, Vy?” Lan Yi said, her tone kind enough to make the air feel a few degrees warmer than it was before. “I do not recall doing anything to warrant your thanks.”
Vy did her best to cradle the teacup in her hands to take a sip, even if it was shaky and bordering on nervous slurping, shaking her head to Lan Yi’s inquiry. “I-I heard through a certain grape vine that you said something to the new Director and it’s why I’ve been able to sleep easier during my daily naps lately,” Vy confessed, a fond smile starting to form on her face with the admission. “It didn’t feel right to let things go by without saying thank you.”
To Vy’s surprise, Lan Yi sighed, her tone coming out mild and almost bordering professional as she replied with, “Vy, I am Chaldea’s legal advisor. It’s part of my job to reinforce the rights all staff should have.” The words were punctuated by a particularly dainty sip of her own tea, and Vy tilted her head at the older woman to wait. Soon enough, once Lan Yi finished her mouthful of tea, Vy could see Lan Yi swallow rather thickly past her cup. “You shouldn’t have to thank me when your personal rights shouldn’t have been violated in the first place.”
“But I wanted to, Lan Yi,” Vy continued in an equally quiet voice, the smallest hint of desperation leaking into her tone as she put her own teacup down. “Because not everyone has done that for me, and I wanted to express my gratitude to you for doing just that.”
Especially after someone I once loved easily put me down without a care in the world. Despite it all, you’re not doing that. You’re still staying with me, through everything. Even if I don’t know you as well as the Servants and Mash…
Vy wasn’t sure if it was a spur of the whim or her heart showing itself yet again on her sleeve, but Vy leaned forward in Lan Yi’s direction over the table to add in a briefly confident voice, “A certain Hero of Charity told me it’s good to be honest about things like this, anyways.”
You deserve nice things too, Lan Yi.
The reference was enough to throw Lan Yi out of whatever funk she had found herself in, because Vy found herself watching in amazement as Lan Yi’s cheeks flushed a dark color. The older woman proceeded to cover her mouth with one hand, gray-green irises flickering back and forth between her tea cup and Vy’s own eyes. “…Of course it was Lancer,” Vy could faintly hear past Lan Yi’s fingers, her eyebrows furrowing enough to wrinkle what Vy could see of Lan Yi’s forehead through her long hair. “Is that all, Vy?”
“I was thinking of baking you something if you were okay with sweets?” Vy said in a higher-pitched voice, unable to help the glee starting to bleed through because Lan Yi was actually relaxing. That never happened before, except when — when Dr. Roman was still around. The air felt warm. Comfortable. Like Vy was home. “If you weren’t okay with that, I just wanted to spend time with you, Lan Yi. Outside of work, I mean.” A little laugh left Vy’s lips at the thought of a certain Goddess of the Underworld lingering outside the office. “A lot of people have been telling me I need to take better care of myself, and you’re cozy to be around, Lan Yi, so…”
Lan Yi gave Vy another look through her fingers, eventually lowering her hand to study Vy for a moment. Vy tilted her head in return, evenly matching Lan Yi’s look in intensity.
“…How are you at The Legend of Zelda, Vy?” Lan Yi said finally.
Vy blinked. “…Er, would it offend you if I said I never played a single entry?”
For the first time that entire conversation, Lan Yi beamed. “Oh, Vy,” her voice came out tinkly and warm, a side Vy had never heard or seen before, “allow me to teach you the ways of gaming.”

🌟🌟🌟!
This ask has been in my box a while now and thank you for it @zzariyo This is for the fanfic directors cut and I’m pretty sure you read Farore, but I’m not sure what else you’ve read so I’ve been thinking about what I might want to say about that story that you might find interesting.
Farore started out as a single scene in my head of older Link pulling the sword and eventually I had to write it down to just get rid of it, and once I was done with that I felt a little compelled to explore what happened right after. The story originally ended midway through what is chapter six, with Link meeting the rider outside the castle who urges him to come back. I did not know what to do at that point, since I did not have writer friends and had no idea where to find them so I ended up asking someone on a Zelda discord I was on who happens to write some fic to look at it. He said he liked it but was kinda non committal when I pushed for feedback so who knows but he did ask what happened next and I had no clue.
Eventually I sat down to see if I could make this longer than 9k and if so, what I wanted to accomplish with that. There were already elements of the story that were pretty much drawn from my own life (yeah so though the destructive event with my parents that made me persona non grata was much more US politics based, but still hurt a great deal, and kinda ended the same way it does in Farore. As far as I’m concerned, that was his final trip to Hateno. I’ve certainly seen the last of Conway.) and since I absolutely did not think I was a very creative person at the time, I decided to see what else I could draw from the personal well. I was at the end of an arc that started in 2015 with a job that collapsed under me and the start of family drama that ended with things splintered and left me a red hot mess for a while-I actually stumbled on BOTW as a way to self medicate, though I did eventually seek therapy (both Impa and the Great Deku Tree say things that were said to me during that) and things got better so the broad strokes are based on that.
I also ended up welding this to the idea I had to come up with a Legend of Zelda game by myself, and the only one I’d played in its entirety (still) has been BOTW and I knew it was different so I did a bunch of reading about how games work and ended up with what I think is called a hub and spoke-you start at a central location (Hyrule Castle) and go out somewhere else (the Forest Temple) and come back as you play and things slowly get harder. I also decided it was a great idea to publish this as I went and I definitely stole ideas from commenters (it’s why the Big Bad is much younger) and as scary as it was to sometimes go oh god I need to push something in 48 hours it was also exciting and in some ways that artificial pressure I put on myself made me do the work. The pandemic helped, of course, because suddenly all the external things I did to purge the garbage my job throws at me (and suddenly there was a lot more of that) were all gone and the only thing keeping me from quite literally losing my marbles was to hyper focus on poor Link.
I got to thinking about middle aged Link because I’m older and the story in the one Zelda game I’d played resonated so very hard for me that surely there were folks closer to my age writing things but if there are, I can’t find them, and I looked hard. Stories are always about a teenager or someone in their early 20s. I was a disorganized mess at that age. I’m more together now and still capable or great things. Lots of people do great things after decades of slow work. Surely they can save a fictional world, too, though the approach would be different. So in some ways I literally did write the fic I wanted in the world, and I’m pretty proud of it. I do reread it time to time and once I figure out a cover design, I’m going to go to Barnes and Noble and print a hard bound copy, dust jacket and all, that can sit on my bookcase and make me feel warm and fuzzy when I look at it.

Make it to Christmas (Holding On)
The sixth prompt in 12 Days of Christmas by @zelink-prompts
Prompt List
Words: 1715
Summary: Zelda decides that her children are old enough to hear the story of the Hero of Time and it resurfaces old feelings that never left.
Ocarina of Time, post-Ganon
Zelink-mas 2020 l Masterlist
“The princess was taken far away from the castle so that she could be safe, and she didn’t see the little hero for a very long time.”
The children blinked up at her with round, sparkling eyes. The tradition of a bedtime story on Hylia’s Eve never faltered, and she heard her children boast about how their mother had the best stories to anyone who would give them the chance. They were old enough now, she believed, to hear the story of the Hero of Time. Her daughter leaned forwards onto her hands, then tugged at the sleeve of Zelda’s nightgown.
“What happened to the little hero?” she asked, her voice high and full of youth and curiosity.
“The little hero ventured into the great, holy temple like the princess had asked him to, and he put the three jewels onto the altar. A grand door opened to reveal the Sword of Legend, but when the little hero pulled it out, the evil king was right behind him!” Zelda grabbed the sides of her son, snatching the little boy up and making him giggle. “The king touched the Triforce, but because he was not pure of heart, it broke apart and the little hero was trapped in the sacred realm!”
“No!” cried the little boy, prying at his mother’s hands.
“Yes!” Zelda replied as she swung him through the air. “And he slept for seven long years while the evil king took over the kingdom!”
“But what about the princess?” asked the girl as she shook her mother’s arm. “Where did she go? What happened to her?”
“You’re getting ahead,” warned Zelda, running her fingers through the child’s hair. “We must focus on the hero for a little longer.”
Her daughter she sat back with crossed arms and a pout on her lips, but she said no further complaints. So Zelda, with a soft and lighthearted chuckle, continued with her story as she placed her son back on the bed.
“When the little hero woke up all those years later, he wasn’t so little anymore. He’d grown into a young adult, and the Sage of Light told him what had happened--that the evil king tore the kingdom apart, and that he needed to venture through five temples across the land to free the other sages. But when the hero reached the Forest Temple, he learned that he wasn’t alone. A Sheikah warrior named Sheik taught him almost every song he needed and guided him to every temple. But Sheik couldn’t go with him inside, for only a hero who bore courage could, so the hero ventured in by himself and was faced with many scary monsters.
“He fought a phantom of the evil king in the Forest Temple, and an ancient dragon in the Fire Temple, and an amoeba in the Water Temple, but he still had two more to go. The Shadow Temple housed a dark creature called Bongo Bongo, and the Spirit Temple held sister sorceresses known to many as Twinrova. But the hero prevailed, and with the Sages free, he could return to the sacred Temple of Time!
“But someone was waiting there for him. Sheik, the warrior who’d helped the hero get this far, revealed himself to actually be the princess in disguise!”
Her daughter gasped and fell backwards onto the bed, throwing an arm over her eyes.
“I knew it!” she cried. “I knew it was her!”
“No you didn’t!” her brother argued, sticking his tongue out. Zelda wanted to laugh, because her daughter was bright and true, and it was very likely she’d guessed it all along. But her brother did not like to be outperformed.
“Yes I did!”
“If you argue, we won’t be able to finish the story,” Zelda warned. “I’d have to send you to bed without the ending—and that’s if it’s still early enough for the White Goddess to pass.”
The children immediately straightened up, looking at their mother with pleading eyes. She almost laughed again, but she knew in order for the White Goddess to make her pass, the children needed to be asleep. The story had to come to an end before then.
“Once the princess revealed herself to the hero,” she continued, “the evil king appeared and trapped her in a glowing crystal! The hero ran to her, but she was already gone. To get her back, he had to venture deep into the evil king’s castle and climb up the tallest tower, where the evil king was waiting. He taunted the hero, but the hero was stronger. He beat the evil king and freed the princess, but the king used the rest of his power to collapse the tower! The princess and the hero had to run as fast as they could to escape, and the castle crumbled behind them.”
“They won!” cried the little boy. “I knew he could do it!”
“But then,” Zelda interrupted, a smile tugging at her lips when his face dropped and eyes widened. “The evil king emerged from the rubble and revealed his true form—a giant pig monster! The hero was forced to fight him again, a second time, but the monster was so much bigger than him that he couldn’t beat it with his sword alone. He had to use light arrows of which the princess had gifted him. She wasn’t sure there was any hope left and she wished so badly that she could help, but the hero continued to fight until finally, the king was defeated for good! The princess and the six Sages sealed the monster in the sacred realm, and peace was restored to the kingdom at long last.”
Her son, whose eyes were bright with the thought of adventure, fell back onto the bed and waved his hands as if he were holding a sword.
“When I grow up, I’m gonna be a hero and save a kingdom!” he declared. Zelda let out a small laugh and pulled the blanket over him.
“You’ll be a wonderful little hero,” she said and pressed a gentle kiss to his forehead. His eyes fluttered shut and within seconds, he was dreaming.
Her daughter had moved to her own bed in the meantime and was curled up around a pillow when Zelda approached.
“What happened to the hero and the princess?” the girl asked, staring up at her through tired eyes.
“What happens in every fairytale,” Zelda replied, her smile sad and weak. “They got married and lived happily ever after.”
Satisfied, the daughter rolled onto her side and closed her eyes. Zelda gave her a kiss, then shut the door to the room behind her as she left. The walk to her own bedroom was slow and the holly and fairies that decorated the halls felt foreign to her. Much of the castle felt foreign to her now, and every year stretched her heartstrings so thin she worried they would snap.
In her bedroom, laying in her bed, was her husband. But he was not the hero, and he never would be. It was nothing more than a diplomatic arrangement meant to benefit Hyrule, and the two managed to get along quite alright for the sake of their little family. But her heart belonged far from here, sealed behind the gateways of time with a boy she would never see again. She found she would never quite heal from that time, from her decision to send him back, and she knew that holding on would only hurt her further.
But she sat on the silken sheets of her bed and cradled the Ocarina of Time in her hands as she watched the stars crawl through the blackened sky out of her window. She wondered faintly where that little boy was now, though she was certain he wasn’t a little boy anymore, even if she had sent him back to his childhood. She wondered if he was alive and well, and if he had ventured from the forest yet. She wondered if his granted freedom treated him with kindness and kept him safe. She thought of his soft blue eyes, so bright despite the sorrow and trauma they held, and how it had felt when he turned those eyes on her. She thought of his hands, warm and gentle whenever they would touch hers. She thought of their late night conversations they shared during his journey, when he poured his heart out to Sheik about his worry for the princess and about the horrors of the temples. She thought about the expression on his face when she spoke about sending him back--about his hesitancy and reluctance and horror. She thought about how the thought to kiss him crossed her mind, the thought to pour her heart out, and part of her wished that she had done so. But had she done it, she would not have been strong enough to send him back. She knew it wise to not indulge in things that could not be.
Zelda stood, her steps slow and quiet as she entered the balcony. The winter air was cold and she shivered, but it was something to feel other than sadness, so she did not return inside. She lifted the ocarina to her lips, but she had no song to play.
She knew should she wish to keep her sanity, the best course of action would be to lock the ocarina where she would never think of it again. But it was all she had left of that little hero. The thought crossed her mind, and she wondered if in a different lifetime, they’d gotten their happily ever after. She hadn’t--not in this time, but she hoped that the hero she’d sent back received his, whatever it may have consisted of.
The clock in her room chimed at the change of hour. The twelve soft chimes that followed told her that it was midnight. She did not know how long she’d been standing there. Zelda rubbed her eyes--dry, for she had a sorrow that reached far past crying--and looked up at the stars once more.
“Happy Hylia’s Day, Link,” she whispered out onto the wind, just as she did every year. And just like every year before, there was no answer as she turned and slipped into her bed.

Ten Favorite Female Characters
I was tagged by @midnight-in-town, so now I have to show them how much I love my favorite women.
Name your favorite female characters from 10 different Fandoms and tag 10/or the amount you wish people
Tagging: @hamliet @amonmahboi @inumaqi @thyandrawrites @kaibutsushidousha @harostar.. yeah, I don’t know ten people.
Enoshima Junko
“Hope is harmony. A just heart, moving toward the light. That is all. Despair is hope's polar opposite. It is messy and confusing. It swallows up love, hatred, and everything else.”
Junko wishes she was a psychopath. She’s spent her entire life pretending to be a crazy psychopath, because living that life is just so much more interesting than the one she’s stuck in. Enoshima Junko is just too smart for the world, and everything is too easy for her, and rather than try to dumb herself down a little bit she’s decided to knock everything else down. She’s a girl kicking down sandcastles because building them out of sand all alone is no longer doing it for her.
Junko’s interesting because of the weird logic and loops she runs her brain into. There’s a complex character behind the whole “I exist only to spread despair” thing. She’s perfectly capable of forming emotional attachments to people, and genuinely caring. But the people she likes are generally far worse off than the ones she doesn’t care about.
Junko wants so badly to, just not be human. She does the most inhuman things possible to prove that she’s not human. What really made me love her is the lengths she’s willing to go, to the point in Dangan Ronpa Zero where she basically took a screw to her own brain and started acting like a normal girl only when all of her memories were removed.
Junkos relationship with Matsuda shows two conflicting sides of her character. How much she's humanized by her love of him, and also how much she wants to completely destroy that part of herself. It's like she physically can't be a normal girl. Or rather she doesn’t want to be to such extremes she’ll break everything and then herself.
And if she can’t be normal than Junko decided that self destruction is her next best bet. There’s just nothing that will satisfy Junko, and it’s interesting to watch someone that empty decide the world is going to end, or she’s going to end herself and she doesn’t really care which.
Ajimu Najimi
“Call to me with affection, Anshin’in-san. Well, I don’t really care what manga characters call me.”
Hey, I put Junko on this list twice. Both Ajimu and Junko live in a world that is too easy for them, and therefore they have no reason to get emotionally invested in others or try to attach themselves to anything. Which is why it’s fun to see Ajimu attempt the same thing as Junko to kill herself in style and eventually get saved from herself.
Medaka Box is such a meaningful manga to me because they take the weirdest characters and no matter how deranged they are they find the parts of them that are relatable and go, well guess what you’re human too. Ajimu literally calls herself a non-human and she’s just as human as all the rest in the end.
The best part is it’s not her good points that make her human, it’s all her flaws. It’s easy to feel like the world isn’t real, that nothing in the world is worth living for, to feel no emotional attachment. Those are all human emotions. Not because they’re good and shining, but because they’re petty and terrible. Ajimu is this brilliant character, but she’s also kind of just a petty little girl using a ‘fiction is reality’ lens to cope. She’s not that special actually, she’s just suicidal, and kind of awful in general. It’s nice to see that human side behind the mastermind character.
Azula
“My own mother thought I was a monster. She was right of course but it still hurts.”
Azula is someone thoroughly dehumanized by everyone even the “good” members of her family (Uncle Iroh, Zuko, her Mother). I like how Azula in some part seems to be aware that both her brother, and mother seem to kind of consider her the “bad sibling” and she just decides to embrace it. Like it’s... not emotionally healthy in any way and it’s terribly tragic but there’s something about characters who actively make the decision to be a monster that gets me.
There’s something about Azula’s writing that makes me uncomfortable, and it makes me sad that Zuko like... continually associates her with his father’s abuse, and demonizes her like she wasn’t also a kid going through the exact same situation, but Azula getting increasingly unstable is at least an appropriate response to that.
Even if her brother, her mother, or her father won’t see her as her own person and they all see her as an extension of her father’s abuse on her, Azula is just so determined to be her own person even if it means burning the world, or herself A common theme I guess, but a lot of these characters have narratives about not being allowed to be their own person or shown any kind of humanity or normalcy.
Morrigan
“Well, well, well what do we have here?”
Morrigan is mean, and nasty, and grumpy and bitchy and witchy. She’s allowed to be unlikable, because Morrigan never bends to anyone. Her survival, and freedom will become first before anything else.
It feels like Morrigan is the main character in her own story, and you just happen to be a part of it for a short while. You may even be an important character to her, she may be attached, but ultimately you’ll never be more than support to her.
Morrigan is such an ambitious an singular entity that her character development is letting you be a part of her life and not the other way around. She'll always survive on her own. Morrigan is irrevocably shaped by her environemnt, and yet she craves freedom in that too because she doesn’t want to be bound by her past or shaped by her mother. So much of herself is dedicated to being better than the environment that she was raised in that she defeats her mother not by killing her, or freeing herself, but rather by being a better mother than her.
Raven / Rachel Roth
“Azarath, Metrion, Zinthos...”
Raven is fun, because a bunch of monks thought the best way to teach her to handle her emotions was to never allow her to feel any emotion ever. So, Raven is eternally running on a zero. She’s terrified even a small amount of happiness will end the world. She’s not allowed to be her own person, neither her bastard father, nor the monks treat her like one.
Raven is so gentle, and selfless, and emotionally perceptive and sensitive to others needs but she can’t ever display almost any of these good traits because she’s internalized the idea that she’s such a bad person. She always believes all the time that she exists to hurt others and that makes it so difficult for her to connect to others.
Which is why her true friends bond with the Teen Titans is so meaningful, because Rachel found a family in spite of all of that. She has friends who think she’s a good person unconditionally despite the fact that Raven continually tells herself she isn’t. There are people in the world willing to navigate the maze of walls that Raven has built around herself, and that her environment forced her to build and closed up, and she’s so happy to have them.
Midna
“Some call our realm a world of shadows, but that makes it sound so unpleasant... The twilight there holds a serene beauty... You have seen it yourself as the sun sets on this world. Bathed in that light, all the people were pure and gentle...”
Midna just steals the show. Her story now. The game’s not called Legend of Zelda anymore now it’s Legend of Midna. Not only is she the most important character in the game she appears in, but she’s also in character someone so selfish she’ll always prioritize herself over everyone else. However, only because she feels that she can’t exist as anything other than the princess of the twilight and has to prioritize her survival for the sake of her people. Midna even says so at the start of the game, she can’t be kind because she wasn’t spoiled like princess Zelda in the bountiful kingdom of the light.
Midna is so selfish and yet doesn’t really have her own wants and needs as a person outside of the role she has to play for her people, which is why she’s so terribly lost without it and just because this terrible selfish little gremlin. Link and Zelda affect Midna so much because they humanize her. They both sacrifice themselves to save Midna the person and she doesn’t get why. She doesn’t get why two people would help someone who has been so unkind to them and who has failed them this much so far.
That act of selflessness moves her, and also freaks her out. She even says she didn’t want to be saved by either of them. Which is what makes her redemption in the second half of the game so interesting, because Midna really improves herself so she can become someone worth their kindness. She doesn’t want the selflessness of people like Zelda and Link to go to waste, and because of that begins to care about things outside of her kingdom and her role as princess
Vriska Serket
“After all of this is over. Do you want to go on a d8?”
Unfortunately one of my top 3 favorite characters of all time comes from a really terrible source material. Vriska is everything I like in a character. She's a mess. She's really hard to swallow. She's a character that's not meant to be liked.
Nobody really likes Vriska and it's all her fault for being such a horrible person, nobody wants her damage. Which is so interesting because usually main characters get forgiven over and over again. Everyone leaves and if they don't Vriska will burn those bridges herself. No character better embodies what it's like to be stuck in a self harming cycle
Authors are always so obsessed with making characters look good or showing what a good person they are few characters are allowed to be just plain unlikely in ugly ways. It’s what lets Vriskas genuine desire to be better actually seem like a struggle.
Kocho Shinobu
“Are you angry? Yes, I’m angry Tanjiro. I’ve always been angry.”
Shinobu is just all pleasantries on the surface, but so full of negative emotions in ways women aren't allowed to be. I love the medicine / poison dynamic to her character and how it rots her to the core. Too much medicine is a poison, while poison can be a medicine when applied to the right situation.
Shinobu is, two faced. She’s beautiful and kind, and full of ugly emotions and empty. She nurses people back from the dead, she sees no point in living herself and purposefully throws herself into a suicide in her plan against Doma. There’s just such a destructive dance between extremes for her because Shinobu is such a unique individual, trying to deal with all of these emotions she just can’t deal with. She can’t be noble, or better than her trauma, she just pretends to be a good person while she slowly rots away inside.
Shinobu can put on smiles all day -
But she can't be like her sister. She can't love people like her sister can. Maybe she could once but all that's left now is anger. Bitter, unpleasant, and completely in denial of it and still masquerading as a good person. The most beautiful kind of poison of all.
She’s not her sister, but she’s also not really her own person. She doesn’t know who Shinobu is, doesn’t know who Kocho Shinobu lives for. She just doesn’t imagine herself living past her revenge, and even though she’s surrounded by love she’s just so cracked it all pours out of her and absolutely nothing could be worth prolonging her life after everything she’s lost.
Toga Himiko
“What exactly is a normal life? I also live a normal life, you know.”
Himiko Toga is a girl who lives entirely on her own terms. Which is just so rare for a female character, you know? It’s so genuinely subversive to know that Himiko was once a nice girl, who always smiled, always put other people’s feelings first, and that sort of ‘good girl’ behavior drove her completely insane.
Toga deciding to be true to herself is an act of rebellion against the world.
For Himiko everything is flipped. What others regard as psycho behavior is her normal. She doesn’t let other people define her story as a tragedy, and even murders the one person who tries to control her story. In a story where female characters constantly downplay their own importance to support the male characters Himiko is the only character important enough to be the center of her own story. Himiko’s story is so subversive as well, both of how society treats her, and how the story treats characters like her.
Himiko is such an excellent yandere, all yanderes wish they were himiko. She comes off as this batshit stabby girl, but then you find out that shes actually emotionally perceptive. She first comes off selfish, bratty, and self-centered but she turns into one of the most sensitive characters in the manga. She eschews the ideals of being a good girl that was forced down her throat, but that doesn’t mean she’s not empathic, or that she’s not capable of goodness. She’s good to twice. She’s good to the people who accept her.
Himiko no matter what will always be a deviant. Always be an outsider. Instead of trying to make room for her her parents forced her to lie and wear a mask until her identity became completely shattered. I like Toga because under the knife wielding psycho she's a normal girl. Then under that normal girl there’s also a knife wielding psycho ready to fight back, and both of them are the real her.
Ihei Hairu
“I saw the reaper, he was very beautiful.”
Every character from the garden is just fundamentally broken. Hairu and Rize are interesting foils, because if you think of about it a loveless childhood turned them both into ruthless killers. It’s just they decided to live for different things, Rize lived rejecting love and Hairu lived chasing after love. However, fundamentally they are the same. They are children starved for any kind of love or nurturing. Hairu is so desperate she devotes her entire life to the first person who acknowledged her. However, the same sort of desperation to live, that tragic need to make the most out of the few short years they have exists in all garden children.
Hairu wants so badly to be a person, but she’s not a person. She’s half ghoul.
There's just something about a girl who was never meant to be born and never meant to live, still trying. There's a dark side to her character, she's violent and inhuman exactly like the environment she was raised in but she was also still a child at heart seeking love.
Which is why though her narrative is a thoroughly unhappy one, it does make me happy that there was someone who loved her in the form of Koori Ui. There is someone who wanted her to live longer. Her life was short, but she did live, and it’s that struggle to connect to others that made her truly alive.
