Lincoln (2012) - dir. Steven Spielberg
JOSEPH GORDON LEVITT as ROBERT TODD LINCOLN.
I have to do this! And I will! Or I will feel ashamed of myself for the rest of my life. Whether or not you fought is what's gonna matter. And not just to other people, but to myself! I won’t be you, Pa, I can’t do that, but I don’t want to be nothing!

I’m curious now what are they regarding the 80s/90s heartthrobs?
Tumblr media
all right all right!!! i lied it's more like 80s-2000s but ANYWAYS: Rob Lowe for Dick:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
crooked smile ✅ Mullet ✅ Piercing blue eyes ✅ Jason's got a few ideas. I need a man that's got a fuller face (sure, baby face todd is cute. but he can still have a fuller face!!) and he needs his curls so either: John Slattery from Dirty Dozen (his eye color is perfect btw)
Tumblr media
OR Heath Ledger:
Tumblr media
Tim, for me, always seemed to be the one with the baby face. and haha i know it's funny since he was already in a batman movie (AND is in the same movie with heath ledger) but i do think if TDK trilogy committed to making Joseph Gordon-Levitt to being confirmed Tim, it wouldve been perfect (especially since it mirrors Tim figuring out bruce's identiy like in the og comics. oooo dont get me started on that garbage attempt in TDKR):
Tumblr media
For Bruce it would be Richard Gere. He's got this boyish charm, very playboy, attractive billionaire look.
Tumblr media
Don't ask me about damian. I don't know enough about child actors to pick a good one for him.

i cant get over how fucking fascist the dark knight rises is which like...i knew going in it would be if only because its based on frank millers the dark knight comics (and also no mans land???) And frank miller is the biggest piece of shit in comics whos not alan moore or garth ennis but christ i think nolan managed to go even more mask off
Okay grain of salt im not the biggest comics guy i just read the good stuff sylvie sends me so im not as knowledgeable about comic stuff but i stay silly anyways im gonna go character by character thats easiest for me
So batmans barely here except to become disabled and then practically heal overnight so very cool point number one 😐 but half of the movie hes stuck in the scary pit prison (because the Lazarus pit is too silly for nolan) with all the arab guys who didnt get whitewashed and its so boring and it sucks and only white people made it out of the pit ever basically who gives a shit it sucks honestly the only reason im mentioning this is because i honestly forgot bane wasnt the main character about an hour in because like? He should be? and ill get to that
Joseph gordon levitt is there and his character has a name and i do just want to call him joseph gordon levitt instead but thats long as fuck and hes robin so im just gonna call him robin even though he sucks ass. the whole point of his character is to be the good cop to gordons bad cop but it doesnt really work because thats a shitty fucking thing you see in media all the time because they always just go for the its just some bad apples approach look at this good apple dont you love apples approach but honestly nolans deepthroating the boot so much its even worse here. and yeah dudes robin but hes like.... nolans oc as robin because thank god i dont want dick in this movie (which would bring the whitewashing count up to 4 characters) or god forbid jason todd but i think its really telling how even robin in this universe has to be a fucking cop instead of like any of the disadvantaged kids bruce actually takes in like yeah this robin is still an orphan but thats way less important to the narrative and to nolan than being a cop.
gordons also barely here and i dont give a shit about him i wish he died i mean i always wish he died because hes a cop he is THE cop in every batman piece of media (except when he was jack the ripper one time or something?) and why even the most benign batman media is copaganda because theyre fucking besties. really i just want to talk about one scene before I get to the bulk of this post bane. late in the fucking almost THREE HOUR LONG MOVIE theres a scene where gordon is rallying the cops and goes to some cops door and hes like "why did you let your wife answer the door dont you know whats going on out there?" as if women are being raped on the streets of gotham which we never even see a fucking hint of??? the actual main issues affecting gotham at the moment are food issues and even thats not a problem because aid is getting in slowly and thats actually how gordon gets MORE FUCKING COPS into the city its insane and im gonna come back to this again with bane but while we're talking about the misogny -
-lets talk about catwoman who just kind of exists doing the catwoman thing of oh im on batmans side but not really and im on banes side but not really and it sucks but lets start with the misogyny before i talk about catwomans spineless centrism. when catwoman is caught by joseph gordon levitt shes taken to prison and the cops specifically point out shes taken to a mens prison (?????) because of the new laws because shes such a risk that a maximum security womens prison cant hold her but a mens prison can because womens prisons are all knitting circles i guess. This is really just an excuse so she can be in the prison that bane stages a prison break on (based) and come back for the climax and also have a hashtag girlboss moment where she does a sexy flip attack against a man threatening to sexually assault her which is just so classy nolan. and i want to fucking point out that this is blackgate prison which in most batman media is ALREADY FUCKING COED this shit was so unnecessary and gross and i just...its still pissing me off obviously so lets get to catwomans shitty fucking robin hood shit and why robin hood narratives are rarely ever radical. yes stealing from the rich and giving to the poor is cool but here and in most narratives its really only cool because its..one person or a small group. A society wide redistribution of wealth? out of the question thats too scary just go back to helping one kid steal an apple lady and hating that bane is literally crashing wall street (based) and breaking into rich peoples homes and bringing them to sentencing trials for crimes against humanity (based). Catwoman will have no part of that thank you and will instead just kind of...hang out until batman gets back.
side note what the fuck is up with the timeline in this movie batman gets his back broken and taken to the pit which is located in....an "ancient part of the world" the batman wiki tells me which holy shit okay the racism continues forever. but batman is not in gotham and again his back is literally BROKEN until it gets healed because he....was hoisted into a standing position with a rope? and idk how long that takes whether its months or a day because the movie seems to suggest both???
okay lets talk about talia al ghul and ras al ghul really quick before i get to based bane. Ill start by saying they're really fucking whitewashed like probably the worst example ive ever seen? Talia (or miranda tate as she's called for most of the movie) is played by a white french actress and Ra's al ghul is played by white irish actor and racist liam neeson. Because the comics are also racist ras al ghul never is really given a clear country of origin besides vaguely arabic slash east asian partially because hes so old but also again the racism but hes certainly not white again...because of the racism. and neither is talia who is only slightly less vaguely chinese and arabic. nolan gives even less of a shit than most batman writers though which is a high bar. talia was so boring and poorly written i barely remember her but they gave her half hearted attempts at environmentalism (incremental and done by begging the rich for everything though of course) before saying oh its actually because she and bane want to blow gotham up with a bomb which...god its all so stupid i honestly forget the bomb shit exists because it makes no sense and seems to have a detonation timer of 24 hours which again is why i literally have no idea what the timeline is. this shit is so stupid and unnecessary except to be the secret reason banes populist revolution of gotham (based) is actually bad but its so fucking tacked on even beyond most reasons why communist characters in media eat a baby to show theyre actually bad and so is communism because communists love neutron bombs.
BANE TIME! I'll also start out by pointing out that bane is whitewashed since hes supposed to be from a fictional south american slash caribbean island prison which......man. He's just tom hardy here though. Lets keep talking about communists eating a baby so theyre bad now. I think this is a trope people associate more with the mcu which is fair the falcon and the winter soldier pulled some shit because of course it did but i think we should consider the dark knight rises as a prime example instead. Not the originator since anti communism didn't start with nolan although i wish i could blame him for that too. Banes list of crimes batman has to stop him for are killing cia agents (based), crashing the stock market which he didn't even kill anyone at (not as based as he could have been), stage a prison break as previously mentioned (based), revealing police corruption (based), forming a militia to govern gotham while theres a transition of power from the rich and the police to the people (based), killing a bunch of cops (based), exploding some of gotham including all but one of the bridges out of the city (really just a strategic decision since hes about to have the american military on his ass and needs to counter that), and blowing up the pittsburgh steelers (extremely based). hey why is this guy the villain again? hey why does gotham have a wall street now why is this such a big deal is it possibly because the occupy wall street protests happened before during and after production of the movie? no that certainly couldnt be the case theres no way nolan would hate peaceful protests and create a movie where god forbid they werent peaceful and cops were instead treated like they treat protestors so we feel bad for them instead of people who are literally sick and tired of their labor being exploited by capitalism for the benefit of the rich. like jesus christ this movie is so blatantly fascist explaining the plot should have anyone going hey wait a minute. and you may say im biased in favor of bane as a communist but jesus christ are you seeing the shit nolan is pulling im being even handed in comparison i mean the fucking climax is batman showing up to rally the cops against bane and the mostly citizens militia of gotham like jesus fucking christ. banes not even a fucking dictator hes literally just some guy in most of the scenes after gotham is taken back by the people hes not even the guy sentencing and killing the rich and the police thats scarecrow! hes just on the sides like everyone else. and while im on scarecrow (jonathan crane hes not called scarecrow in the movie but he is that judge guy) nolan treats it as unreasonable that these are not hearings to determine the guilt of the police and the rich they protect because the people have already determined that theyre guilty but they just fucking are by definition. you dont get rich under capitalism by working hard you get rich by exploiting hundreds of thousands or millions of people out of their labor and livelihoods these people are fucking guilty even if they havent killed anyone with their own hands. but because bane does kill people on screen we're supposed to think hes worse but he only kills rich people and cops and the pittsburgh steelers!!!! like holy shit i hate this fucking movie i hate christopher nolan

Sally Field and Daniel Day-Lewis in Lincoln (Steven Spielberg, 2012)
Cast: Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, David Strathairn, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, James Spader, Hal Holbrook, Tommy Lee Jones, John Hawkes, Jackie Earle Haley, Bruce McGill, Tim Blake Nelson, Joseph Cross, Jared Harris, Lee Pace, Peter McRobbie, Gloria Reuben, Michael Stuhlbarg, Walton Goggins, David Oyelowo, Lukas Haas, Dane DeHaan, Adam Driver, S. Epatha Merkerson. Screenplay: Tony Kushner, based on a book by Doris Kearns Goodwin. Cinematography: Janusz Kaminski. Production design: Rick Carter. Film editing: Michael Kahn. Music: John Williams.
The all-star patriotic historical pageant celebrating American democracy had long been a featured genre of Hollywood films until the disillusionments of Vietnam and Watergate put it pretty much out of favor. But during the brief resurgence of liberal optimism after the election of Barack Obama, Steven Spielberg decided to bring it out of mothballs with a film about Abraham Lincoln's struggles to pass the 13th amendment, banning slavery in the United States. He initially planned to star Liam Neeson in the title role, but when Neeson decided he was too old for the part, the choice fell on Daniel Day-Lewis, the most chameleonic of actors. Lincoln has been played on screen by actors as varied as Walter Huston, Henry Fonda, and Raymond Massey, but Day-Lewis covered himself with glory and encumbered himself with a third Oscar in the role. It is in fact a superb performance, emphasizing the humanity of the man with depictions of his marital problems, his earthy sense of humor (no previous movie Lincoln was ever heard to utter the word "shit"), and above all his willingness to play down-and-dirty politics. The bulk of the drama is in the maneuverings to get a two-thirds majority in the House of Representatives to ratify the amendment, which has substantial opposition even within the president's own party, the Republicans. This means maneuvering some of the holdouts with promises of government jobs and patronage, a task that falls to a team of lobbyists led by W.N. Bilbo, played beautifully by James Spader. It also involves persuading the most volatile of abolitionists, Thaddeus Stevens, to utter compromising language on the floor of the House, in which he asserts that all men are equal before the law, but not necessarily equal "in all things," creating a fiery, funny scene for Tommy Lee Jones as Stevens. Lincoln is also forced to conceal that he is engaged in peace negotiations with the Confederates, fearing that this would lead to postponement of the vote on the amendment. Tony Kushner's screenplay is more cerebral than most, focusing on points of law and political maneuverings, which is why some reviewers and audiences were not fully enthusiastic about it. Though it was nominated for 12 Oscars, it won only two, for Day-Lewis and for production design, losing best picture to Argo (Ben Affleck) and best director to Ang Lee for Life of Pi. Both losses, I think, are inexcusable, as was Sally Field's loss as the fragile Mary Todd Lincoln to Anne Hathaway's lachrymose Fantine in Les Misérables (Tom Hooper). I suspect Lincoln will grow in esteem over the years, thanks to its many finely detailed performances, the superb re-creation of a period in its sets and costumes, and a general lack of cinematic clichés: John Williams even manages to compose a score without quoting from "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," "The Star-Spangled Banner," or any number of other sure-fire, heart-tugging patriotic melodies.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F Review
Tumblr media
This is one of the better legacy sequels and at least better than the third movie. It's a fun movie to watch that brings the classic gang back together. Though it's a lot of just copying the better movies.
There's not a lot new, even the music is just the iconic stuff from the first two. The Heat-style shootout and the helicopter chase are both standout sequences and offer something different.
Eddie Murphy is still in top shape. He easily slides back into the role, though he's missing that iconic laugh. He can still effortlessly talk his way out of anything. It's nice seeing both Rosewood and Taggart back, the latter skipping the third movie. They too slip easily back into that banter that made them so lovable. It's just a shame that Judge Reinhold and John Ashton look really old, and they spend too much of the movie apart.
Paul Reiser is good, though he's saddled with trying to do Gil Hill's Inspector Todd role. Bronson Pinchot is always fun, but like the third movie he isn't necessary.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the best new addition. He feels like the kind of modern version of Rosewood the story needs. He's got some great banter with Axel.
Taylour Paige is fine in her role as Axel's daughter. But the character is burdened with the kind of legacy character's child story every single other movie has done. Why does every studio feels the need to make every lovable character into a terrible parent? Han Solo, Laurie Strode, Indiana Jones. Do all Hollywood writers need to talk to a therapist about their parental issues?
Kevin Bacon does his usual good work as the head of gang of corrupt cops. But his character is the most forgettable villain in the series.
It recaptures the magic better than most, but it still is a few decades late.

The Corruption of Innocence
Brody Feigin
  Quotes:
“Wilder does not believe that innocence can sur- vive unscathed. He does not believe that faith and trust are a reasonable basis for human relationships. His films chronicle the corruption of innocents, the fall from purity” (Farber 12).
“By using “economies of scale,” the Levitts were able to build quickly and cheaply. 14 However, the rapidity of their operations had ramifications. The homes built were lacking in artistic and architectural diversity. Miles of “identical” Cape Cods, among other styles, characterized the firm’s plots.” (Browner 2).
“To compete, the other studios needed similar technology. There were different names for it: Technirama, Superscope, Cinemiracle, Todd- AO. There was also something called Vista Vision, which was a 70mm lens but on a 35mm film. You had twice as much visual information - The Searchers was shot in Vista Vision” (Schrader 64).
“The Hollywood blacklist—on which Kazan set his seal— stretches further back (as well as further forward) than is often supposed. In 1939, back when a Nazi–Soviet pact appeared to be on the books, the House Un-American Activities Committee went to California for the first time to investigate alleged communist influence.” (Thomas 82).
“The producers’ behavior in May 1947 foreshadowed their even more accommodating stance later in the year, when the going got tougher and the stakes got higher” (Giovachinni 65).
In cinema, innocence is a delicate concept, without problems corrupted by the harsh realities of life. Filmmaker Billy Wilder, known for his insightful portrayal of human nature, demands situations with the perception that innocence can survive unscathed. He contends that religion and consideration are not a reasonable foundation for human relationships, and his movies chronicle the inevitable fall from purity. This sentiment resonates with the ancient events and tendencies in Hollywood, the architectural landscape, and societal attitudes throughout the mid-twentieth century, as evidenced by numerous quotes and facts. The put up-World War II technology witnessed fast modifications in the film industry. Technological advancements represented using technology like Technirama, Superscope, Cinemiracle, Todd-AO, and Vista Vision transformed the cinematic experience. These improvements, even though progressive, symbolized the industry's relentless pursuit of progress, leading to a shift in the notion of cinematic artistry. The quote, "To compete, the alternative studios wanted similar technology," underscores the industry's want for version and exchange to continue to exist in the evolving panorama. Parallel to Hollywood's transformation, the Levitt brothers revolutionized the housing enterprise with their concept of "economies of scale." By constructing quickly and cheaply, they provided less expensive houses to the loads. However, this rapidity had results. The architectural variety becomes compromised, resulting in miles of identical houses. This state of affairs mirrors the movie industry, wherein the quest for efficiency now and then caused a loss of creativity and variety. Amidst these adjustments, the darkish shadow of the Hollywood blacklist loomed huge. The House Un-American Activities Committee's research in 1939 marked the start of a contentious length in Hollywood's records. The manufacturers' behavior in May 1947, as noted within the set-off, hinted at their willingness to house and agree to the prevailing political weather. This climate of worry and suspicion tainted the enterprise, leaving an enduring impact on creativity and freedom of expression. In these complex surroundings, Wilder's attitude toward innocence gains profound significance. His movies, including "Double Indemnity" and "Sunset Boulevard," depict characters whose innocence is tainted by greed, ambition, and betrayal. These narratives function as cautionary tales, illustrating the vulnerability of human relationships when considered misplaced. Wilder's skepticism about the inherent goodness of humanity mirrors the disillusionment experienced by individuals in Hollywood and society.
In conclusion, the interaction between the corruption of innocence in Hollywood, the architectural uniformity brought about by using mass production, and the erosion of acceptance as accurate within human relationships create an idea-frightening tapestry of interconnected topics. The rapid technological advancements in cinema, the housing enterprise's pursuit of performance, and the political climate of suspicion collectively contributed to a challenging era for creativity and innocence. Wilder's movies serve as a poignant mirrored image of this tumultuous duration, urging visitors to contemplate the fragility of innocence and the complexities of human nature in the face of alternate and adversity.

Sometimes I think I would've liked to see John Blake as Robin in more than Nolan's movies. Maybe in a comic, because if Terry got his miniseries of comics after Batman Beyond animated series, then it isn't impossible. Maybe it can't happen because Christopher Nolan didn't have that in mind when he created John Blake, but guys, we can't deny the character has potential.
Tumblr media
I mean, he found out by himself, like Tim, that Bruce was Batman. He admired the Dark Knight since he was a little kid and knowing that Bruce became what he became after the death of his parents, being John himself an orphan, motivated him. That's why he decided to be a policeman in the first place and then to make justice by his hands and quite the GCPD.
He believed in Bruce and everything that Batman represented even after the big scandal of Harvey Dent and bla bla bla, which for me is great. He went as far as to go to Wayne's manor to make Bruce wake up and face the world they were living. He's the one who pulled Bruce out of his shell after all those years.
Tumblr media
«I figured it out too late. You got to learn to hide the anger, practice smiling in a mirror.
It's like putting on a mask»
Genius line, btw.
They don't show us too much about his past, but he had a hard childhood. Moving to a foster home till his foster parents get frustrated and sent him to an orphanage, all of this after his mother died in a car accident and his father got shot. He felt angry, but never understood. And when he met Bruce Wayne for the first time, he knew he was like him. That he understood. And that he was Batman.
In the movie this is not explain, but John said:
«Right when I saw you, I knew who you really were. I'd seen that look on your face before.
It's the same one I taught myself»
So leaves it to your own interpretation, pretty much the same Nolan does with all his movies. But still a genius line.
John actually cares about the children of Gotham, being a volunteer in his former orphanage and trying to support them in any way possible. He even knows all the names of the orphans and is happy when he learns that Bruce transformed the manor to be the Martha and Thomas Wayne home for children.
Tumblr media
At first he is a loyal follower of the law, saying to Jim that he betrayed everything he stood for and showing himself disappointed with what Gordon did. But as the movie progresses, John begins to understand the point of view of the Commissioner, that sometimes you have to break the rules to catch the bad guys. The scene when he becomes aware that he just killed two people is underrated. Also, from the start of the film, we see that John is not exactly an obedient cop, often trying to do risky moves and things he considers necessary. He's reckless and his priorities are far away from the ones of his colleagues. He obeys his own rules.
So Blake leaves the GCPD the moment he realizes, in that bridge, that Batman is gone and Gotham has no one to protect it in a way the police couldn't. He takes the responsibility that Bruce left him.

«You know what you said about structures becoming shackles?
You were right, and I can't take it, the injustice»
That's a character development I enjoyed. Wtf all his lines are genius

John has a lot of things that makes me remember all the other Robins. These are a few I remember.
He's an orphan, like basically half the batfam.
John knew Batman's secret identity from the beginning, like Tim.
He's a person motivated by his past, the anger and the desire of justice. Like everyone.
John called out Bruce on his bullshit, like all his sons do.
He has black hair (???
He killed people, oof.
He looks hella good in a suit, the most important requirement to be a bat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He often disagrees with the law.
John admired Bruce since he was a child and grow up trying to follow his path. Tim vibes.
Well, he gives all the vibes. With Dick, specially the cop part and the 'I love kids' thing, Jason and his anger when he was a teenager and ofc Tim, cause he trained his skills to achieve a goal. I can't think of things he has in common with Damian (?

Reasons I wanted more of John Blake:
Because his official name is Robin, that's freaking cool.
Bruce trusted him with his legacy.
His story is promising. DC get a whole plot from the 'Dick get shot' thing, I'm sure they can do anything.
He would be a refreshing character, like Terry.
We didn't get the chance to see his trajectory as Robin and that's something I will regret the rest of my life.
Idk I have curiosity of what sort of story it could become. One without a Batman and a new and inexpert Robin having bittersweet adventures. Saying that Bruce is really death or not going back, which could be another reason to make it a series.
Assuming that a comic about Nolan's universe would follow the original storyline. Like Batman Beyond.
Did I already said all his lines are epic af?
Tumblr media
The last three draws kinda look like Nightwing symbol more than Batman's
Only reason I don't want more of John Blake:
Because Christopher Nolan ended it there and he's my lord (???
But then, I love Joseph Gordon-Levitt and all the characters he plays and John "Robin" Blake is no exception.

Yeah, I did this because I was rewatching the Dark Knight Rises and it suddenly came to my mind.
I wrote it in 5 minutes I don't even know

MYSTERIOUS SKIN- 2004 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Tumblr media
Extremely sad and unsettling indie drama about the impact that shared childhood trauma has on two guys growing up in Kansas.
Neil (Joseph Gordon Levitt) and Brian (Brady Corbet) were on the same little league baseball team as children.
When we see Neil grown up we find out hes a gay hustler who lives a horribly depressing life. Hes has friends who care about him but hes emotionally unavailable and seems broken.

When we see Brian grown up we find him to be obsessed with UFO'S and haunted by an unresolved mystery from his past. He remembers waking up with several hours missing from his memory and unsure why he was bleeding. He witnesses a UFO above his house and believes he may have been abducted by aliens. He starts to remember tiny parts of missing time and realises Neil is the key to finding out what happened to him.

Watched Mysterious Skin before but couldnt remember lots of it, this is the first time ive seen it start to finish and was blown away.
Neil and Bryans stories run along side each other but couldnt be more different, theres points that connect them and build up intrigue, but its only at the end of the movie they meet, at which point the mystery unravels.
Pretty heartbreaking explanation as to what happened, and you dont feel like the characters will even benefit from knowing about it. You get the idea they will be stuck in a permanent state of confusion and sadness.
The scenes which depict the sexual abuse they encountered were some of the most disturbing scenes ive ever seen in a movie. Reminded me of the Dylan Baker storyline from the 1998 Todd Solondz movie "Happiness". Both directors filmed the childs scenes seperately so they were unaware of what was happening.
This is by far my favourite Gregg Araki film. It has lots of style as his other movies do but feels like it has more substance and less shock factor. There are moments that are insanely shocking, as in most of his films, but all happening for a reason that drives the story forward.
Loved seeing Michelle Trachtenberg. She was fantastic in this, so sweet. Loved the relationship between Wendy and Neil it was quite tragic but also heartwarming.
Fantastic acting from both male leads. Joseph Gordon Levitt in particular was fantastic. Many of the scenes of him working were so awful and hard to watch, but he was very convincing.
Good supporting performances also from Elizabeth Shue and Mary Lynn Rajskub.
Mysterious Skin is based on the book written by Scott Heim
Brilliant movie. One of the best ive seen this year.
