"The vile drider Karinza is languishing on the wide landing when the party enters her lair." (Tony DiTerlizzi from "Honor Lost, Honor Regained" by Paul Hamilton Beattie Jr, Dungeon 48, July/August 1994)

Since we're talking about Tony DiTerrlizzi with the (hopefully temporary) cancellation of The Spiderwick Chronicles, I thought I'd share my class handouts on here--
I had the absolute honor of sitting in on his drawing class at GenCon 2015! We all drew beholder ideas after he gave us a full drawing tutorial for like 10-15 minutes.

Contrary to Mick's claim, time was not on our side this past week, so we had to dig into our archive for another remastered rerun of the Vintage RPG Podcast. When we redid the fairly recent Erol Otus interview last time, I made a mental note to stretch further back and pluck our interview with Tony DiTerlizzi out of the mists of time. It remains one of my favorite RPG chats, public or private, and certainly deserves a second moment in the spotlight.
Original show notes from June 24, 2019:
We have a very special guest this episode: illustrator Tony DiTerlizzi graced us with a full length interview. We chat about his influences, Dragon Mountain, the Monstrous Manual, Planescape, Magic the Gathering, the Spiderwick Chronicles, Hong Kong dinosaurs (you can read Tony’s post on these and their influence on Dungeons & Dragons here) and so much more – and we barely scratch the surface, honestly.

the spiderwick chronicles mean so much to me and I genuinely would not be the same person without these books. I’ve read them so many times and arthur spiderwick’s field guide is never on my shelf too long, I still look at it all the time. needless to say I was very excited for the show! it was a lot different than the books, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it and I really hope it gets picked up for a second season!
thank you tony diterlizzi and holly black for my childhood <3

Curtain (Agatha Christie)
"Curtain has a serial killer known only as X before their identity is revealed. X has never actually killed anyone themselves — instead, they're a master of manipulation, preying on the fears of others and driving them into a state in which they decide to kill, but are completely unaware that they're being manipulated to do so. Sort of like what this propaganda speculated an evil Miss Marple would be like."
The Spider and the Fly (Tony Diterlizzi & Mary Howitt)
"The poem itself was referenced in the podcast with regard to the Web on multiple occasions. Also, the illustrations? Fucking hell. This is the irl 'A Guest for Mr. Spider'."
