It's been six months, but I'm finally writing the Too Well Midquel! I know people wanted it to take place over Passover, but instead it's taking place around Purim. Here's a sneak peak. ~

Amity looks at herself in the mirror, making sure the sleeves of her purple dress are past her elbows and the hem is past her knees.

She knows that Luz’s mother wears pants, and Luz has insisted that Amity can wear whatever she wants, but Amity wants to be respectful.  It’s a seudah after all, and some people take those really seriously.  

She takes a deep breath and is about to leave when she remembers that it’s Purim, and she knows Luz by now.  Luz will be wearing a costume.

Oh god, Amity is gonna show up in formalwear while everyone else is in costume, isn’t she? She checks her watch.  There is absolutely no time to change now if she wants to make it in time.  She frantically searches through her childhood toy chest and emerges triumphantly with a pair of cat ears.  She puts those on, and then runs back to the bathroom.  Pulling out a stick of eyeliner, she sloppily draws whiskers on her face and then takes herself in.

She looks ridiculous.  Panic blooms in her chest, and she’s about to text Luz and say that she can’t do this, but then her phone buzzes.

Speak of the devil.

“Hey, I was about to leave but-”

“But you’re freaking out?” Luz asks on the other end of the line.

“Wha- how did you know?”

Amity can almost hear Luz’s smile.  “Because I know you, babe.  When you get nervous you focus on one thing and obsess over it.  So what is it this time?”

Amity sighs.  Her girlfriend can see right through her.

“What I’m wearing,” she admits, “I look like a stuck up half assed cat.”

“Sounds perfect for Purim!”

“Luz,” Amity says, “I’m literally in a fancy dress and cat ears.  Your mom is going to hate me.”

Luz has the audacity to laugh.

“Amity, my Mom already loves you! You’ve met her over video chat a million times!”

“I know, but this is different!” Amity insists.  “What if she thinks I'm disrespectful?”

“Amity,” Luz says gently, “Seriously, this dinner is not a big deal.  My Mom is super chill, and she knows how much I love you.  She’s not going to hate you over something like what you’re wearing, and to be honest it sounds super cute anyway.  Please just come?”

Amity worries her bottom lip with her teeth.  “It’s just my mom-”

“Is a huge bitch, and has nothing to do with mine! I promise, Amity, this is an entirely different situation.”

Amity lets out a little laugh at Luz calling her mother a bitch, because god is it true.  But Luz is also right.  Their moms are different people.  

It will be okay.

“Okay,” Amity finally says, “I’ll see you in a couple hours.”

“That’s my girl!!!! See you soon, okay? I love you!”

Amity’s heart flutters.  Even though she’s heard it a million times, she still gets a little giddy whenever Luz tells her she loves her.  

“I love you too,” she says, and then hangs up.

She looks in the mirror one last time, straightens her cat ears, and stands up taller.

Now or never.

She walks to her car, nerves curling in her stomach like snakes.  

She can do this. She can do this.
