It is very inch resting being an English Writing student with 3 different disorders that all have obsession/compulsion/impulsivity as symptoms because do I ~like~ Hawthorne or Emerson? No. Am I, perhaps, wasting my time in a library that closes too damn early researching transcendentalism and romanticism and how they lead to a whirlpool that contains gothic literature, surrealism, and sentimentalism because these crotchety old men were out of their gourds but sometimes right? Yes. Yes I am.

The sky is just such good poetry inspiration right now. Like, my camera sucks so it won’t do it justice but it’s just a masterful tapestry of shining pastel pink, sprinkled with glorious gold, on a canvas of soothing pastel blue.

You think if ran away to the catskills to live in a hemlock tree six feet in diameter and trained a falcon to hunt for me, anybody would notice?

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.

And we are enabled to apprehend at all what is sublime and noble only by the perpetual instilling and drenching of the reality that surrounds us.

'living fast'
the concept of living a fulfilling life is so simple that humans don't understand it. you have to live at the slowest possible pace.
i often get caught up in the feeling of everything happening right now, and that gets so overwhelming that I end up doing nothing at all.
then there is this idea of living fast. to be spontaneous to the point of not thinking anything through before committing to it. the idea of living fast promotes recklessness. you stop thinking of yourself and focus only on how you get ahead of your imaginary competitors. you can keep racing if you want to, but it's not free. you pay for it with your life. when you play that game, you are nothing more than a player. you are stripped of your inner well-being, and you spend all of your experience in a state of survival.
if you put the game down, and decide you don't want to play anymore, then you can choose to live slowly. wherever you are, whoever you are. live your experience of life slowly. Stop and smell every single flower. drive exclusively in the slow lane, stop completely at every stop sign and look both ways. every so often take a moment to become aware of your breathing, and thoughts. Become aware of the fact that you are just another species on this planet, in this solar system, in this milky way.
understand that your life is the most important thing because it is the only thing that can fulfill you, yet just as insignificant as any individual life in the great community of all life on this planet, in this solar system, in this milky way.

I hate the “Thoreau’s mom did his laundry” criticism so much, it drives me crazy.
Henry Thoreau did not go to Walden Pond because he thought it would be a fun adventure. He went into the woods because he was deeply depressed and burnt out. He was running from the horror of his brother and best friend recently dying in his arms, and the haunting memory of causing the Fairhaven Bay fire. His friend Ellery Channing literally gave him the ultimatum of either taking some time off to write and think, or else be institutionalized.
I think Thoreau’s mother saw her depressed son choosing to retreat into a small cabin in the woods, and was worried about him. Of course she did his laundry - just as Ralph Waldo Emerson probably brought him firewood and bread. These were not chores of obligation to support a “great” man, but services of love to help their deeply depressed 28yo son and friend.
And if you ask me, there’s a lesson in that - to “suck out the marrow of life” and “live deliberately,” one must also accept help offered from the people in your life who love you. There is no true transcendentalism or individualism without love and friendship behind it.
