A blog for Sam Campbell!
Hello! This is a fan blog for Sam Campbell AKA Cambo, an Australian comedian. I will be posting his skits, sketches, appearances, and other stuff!
I am not Sam Campbell and I am not affiliated with Sam Campbell :)
I'll start by linking his socials, and other impressive fan channels.
Mcdonalds Comedy - Sam's YouTube channel
Sam Campbell's Instagram (@/mcdonaldscomedy)
Cambo Fans - a great place to find Sam's podcast appearances, acting cameos and TV appearances.
Skills In Time - comedy sketch group with Sam Campbell, Greg Larsen and Henry Stone. (Watch 'The Trough', it's hysterical).
Sam frequently writes or features on Grouse House, like in the series 'Nippers'.
Sam is signed to Individual Artists Management, and is also part of The Junkyard.
Tickets for Sam's upcoming gigs are available here.
Chortle tends to update some of the gigs Sam does.
British Comedy Guide lists many of Sam's TV appearances and articles written about his past comedy shows. (And of course IMDB lists all of his TV/writing credits).
I have uploaded a list of all the podcast episodes Sam has featured on, with links to each episode.
Ellen has been doing a great job of archiving pics over on Pinterest.
In case you didn't know, Sam Campbell was a contestant on Taskmaster Series 16, which you can watch here on Channel 4 (UK only). The link for viewers outside of the UK is here, courtesy of Little Alex Horne.
Sam also plays Darrell in Bloods, available on Hulu and NOW TV.
Finally, watch Sam Campbell's comedy special 'Companion'. He was nice with it!
Send me an ask if you want. I'll be posting more soon!

Fictional minstrels are common in medieval literature but references to real-life performers are rare and fleeting. We have first names, payments, instruments played and occasionally locations, but until now virtually no evidence of their lives or work....
[Dr James] Wade’s study, published in The Review of English Studies, focuses on the first of nine miscellaneous booklets in the Heege Manuscript. It contains three texts and Wade concludes that around the year 1480 Heege copied them from now-lost notes written by an unknown minstrel performing near the Derbyshire-Nottinghamshire border.....
Tumblr media
A little tale I will you tell
I trow it will like you well
Thereat ye shall have good game
But where it was I dare not say,
For haply another day,
It might turn me to blame...
All three texts are humorous and designed for live performance – the narrator tells his audience to pay attention and pass him a drink. The texts all feature in-jokes to appeal to local audiences and show a playful awareness of the kind of audiences that we know minstrels performed to.....
Richard Heege was a household cleric and tutor to the Sherbrooke family, part of the Derbyshire gentry, to whom his booklets first belonged. Wade said: ‘"Heege gives us the rarest glimpse of a medieval world rich in oral storytelling and popular entertainments.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The hare thought she would out win,
& hit Jack Wade upon the chin,
That he fell upon the back.
‘Owt, owt!’, quoth Jack, and ‘Alas,
That ever this battle begun was!
This is a sorry note!’
Jack Wade was never so afeared
As when the hare trod on his beard,
Lest she would have pulled out his throat...

Browsing some old Chortle reviews today for no reason, and found a review of Andy Zaltzman's first ever Edinburgh hour. Things I knew about this show yesterday: It was called Andy Zaltzman versus The Mysterious Dog of Doom, it was billed as a solo show but featured occasions bits with John Oliver, it was before he got particularly into political comedy and was mainly just weird surreal stuff, it was nominated for the 2001 Perrier Newcomer Award. Things I know now: Steve Bennett liked it a whole lot better than he liked John Oliver's solo debut the following year.
Things I know about the show now: According to Steve Bennett,
Andy Zaltzman is producing some of the most interesting and intelligent stand-up around.
He aims terrifically high, with material that aims to capture vast and important ideas and distil them into surreal streams of observation, underlining the absurdity of the situations.
And, considering how ambitious his targets are, his strike rate is remarkably good, producing plenty of laughs from such complex social and political points.
Well that doesn't really fit with what Andy has told both Stuart Goldsmith and Stewart Lee in interviews, that his first comedy hour wasn't particularly political or focused or worth much of anything at all. I figured he must be downplaying something about it, given that it got nominated for quite a significant award.
The integrity of the material is clearly important to Zaltzman, who also takes some well-aimed pops at the conventions and laziness of more conventional stand-up.
Oh I'd pay money to hear that. I mean, obviously I would have already been willing to pay good money for Andy Zaltzman's 2001 stand-up show. But I would really like to hear what a 27-year-old Zaltzman had to say about the laziness of more conventional stand-up. John Oliver wrote that weird article in 2003 getting mad at comedians who slag off Americans for cheap points with British audiences (I mean, I agree with his point, but it was a bit of a weird focus). What did Andy get mad about? Comedians who occasional cite accurate facts?
Mind you, he's not beyond the odd groanworthy pun himself, albeit a finely crafted one.
Sorry, does that mean puns were the things Andy complained about in conventional stand-up? Also, this would later prove to be the largest understatement of Steve Bennett's career, including the time in 2012 when he said that politics and racial identity "inform some of [Nish Kumar's] act."
At its best, the content is superb, although the densely packed routines can sometimes labour an idea beyond its comic limit.
I apologize my above incorrect statement. This is the largest understatement of Steve Bennett's career. (I think that is an amusing thing to say, but also a genuine point. People joke about Andy's puns, but as long as his pun runs are, if someone thinks of the fundamental building blocks of Andy Zaltzman's comedy, that'll be the extensive and laboured analogies. And they're densely packed as fuck.)
But the show is ultimately let down by its execution.
Hey! Steve! Come on, man. You were being so nice. What are you turning it around for now?
Zaltzman is never going to be one of those charismatic comics who can effortlessly work a room, but the presentation could still do with more polish.
Okay that may be accurate, but, hey! Fuck off, Steve! That is our guy who will never be one of those charismatic comics you're talking about! Don't try to polish Andy Zaltzman! No one is allowed to polish Andy Zaltzman. Can you imagine Andy Zaltzman polished? No thank you. I don't like that thought.
The Macguffin of getting the audience to vote for Zaltzman's treatise or the contrary opinions of the Dog Of Doom is an imaginative way to break up the material, even though it sometimes seems incongruously nailed onto the end of a routine.
Fair enough he does do that. I had no idea he was doing it as early as 2001. I'm sorry that Steve man is being so mean to you, Andy. Come to Edinburgh this year and I will happily vote in all your weird audience polls and I promise not to call it incongruous on the internet afterwards.
But the voting, and the smattering of sketches with fellow comic John Oliver,
Hey! Hey, I know that guy! That guy! Sketches with that other guy John Oliver! I had heard them say before that even in the couple of years when they were both doing stand-up but hadn't started doing joint double-act shows, they were appearing in each other's solo stuff. And I quite enjoy this piece of Avalon promo material from 2002, in which John Oliver tries to sell himself by bragging that he appeared briefly in that show by the successful Andy Zaltzman that got nominated for a Perrier Newcomer award. From the brief window when the balance of fame and fortune between them was that way around.
Tumblr media
still leaves the occasional lengthy chunk of monologue that can seem more like lecture than comedy, with too few gags to justify the concentration required.
That's the first bit of this review that doesn't sound like the Andy Zaltzman we now know at all. When I say his comedy is densely packed, it's densely packed with jokes, among other things. But I can believe that maybe wasn't so much the case in 2001.
However, as a debut Edinburgh show, this is a brave and welcome attempt to breathe new life into the genre. And although the raw talent still needs to be better harnessed, it's a show well worth seeing now, to glimpse what the future of stand-up could, hopefully, be.
You're God damn fucking right it was. I mean, I don't know what that show specifically was. It might actually have been shit. But well done on correctly recognizing Andy as a brave and welcome attempt to breathe new life into the genre, and the future of what stand-up could, hopefully, be. Are we lucky that he did turn out to be that?
@lastweeksshirttonight I think you'd enjoy reading this.

Everyone gets lost in Cillian Murphy’s eyes. At the end of his latest film, “Oppenheimer,” in which he plays the titular character, Oppenheimer stands alone, staring at the pattern of rain droplets over a still pond. As the camera lingers on his face, a ring of fire begins to consume the Earth, and an immense blaze fills the whole scene. Not a sound is uttered, but the emotion conveyed in those piercing blue eyes speaks louder than words.
Murphy’s eyes that speak surely bring the character of Oppenheimer to life, even in the black and white parts of the film. “I try not to think of actors as I write, but Cillian’s eyes were the only eyes I know that can project that intensity,” Nolan said to the New York Times. This is their sixth collaboration, but the first time Murphy has played the lead. With “Oppenheimer” surpassing $900 million at the global box office — becoming one of the most acclaimed biopics to date — audiences have become as eager to learn about it’s as they are about the father of the atomic bomb.
Even though it took Hollywood a while to recognize Murphy’s potential to play a starring role, this quietly intense actor has long been celebrated in the UK and Ireland. A survey of his portfolio since his debut in 1996 reveals a daring selection of characters: Jackson Ripper, a terrorist leader in “Red Eye;” Fischer, the heir to a multi-billion empire in “Inception;” Daniel O’Donovan, an Irish republican in “The Wind That Shakes the Barley;” an anonymous, shivering soldier in “Dunkirk.” None of these names carry the same fame as the legendary physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer on screen today, but Murphy honored them all.
In order to get ready for the part of Patrick “Kitten” Barden, Murphy spent weeks working with a real-life drag queen, who took him clubbing with friends so he could study women’s body language and learn how to dress. To be able to convincingly act out Tommy Shelby, a WWI veteran, he followed a hard-hitting workout plan to look “physically imposing” for the part. The quest to achieve Oppenheimer’s chiseled cheeks and a haunted look took him to the opposite end of the spectrum. According to costar Emily Blunt, on set he would only eat one almond a day to slim down and was so immersed in the role that he skipped cast dinners. According to Murphy, “It’s not the scale, it’s the quality.” For him, great dedication is necessary in order to fully embody his characters.
Clearly, his hard work has paid off. Murphy is now the 5/4 favorite to win Best Actor at the 2024 Oscars for his performance in “Oppenheimer,” as predicted by The Online Betting Guide, and his last role as Tommy Shelby in “Peaky Blinders” earned him his first BAFTA TV Awards nomination for Leading Actor. Prior to this, he also received a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for his role as a transgender woman in “Breakfast on Pluto.”
Yet Murphy did not always know he wanted to be an actor, and it took him a long time to discover his life-long passion. His father was a civil servant and his mother a French teacher, but the house was always busy — non-stop music, bookshelves filled with literature, and the radio often on. His parents sent him to an all-boys private school, where he was involved in rugby for some time before giving it up. Then, he tried for a law degree at University College Cork, but he quit that too. He devoted years to doing what his parents wished for, not necessarily what he wanted, and “he didn’t feel good enough.” After that, he had a fleeting music career before a stage production of “A Clockwork Orange” guided him to his true passion — acting.
His first breakthrough came in the 2002 movie “28 Days Later,” where he played Jim, the lone survivor of a pandemic in a desolate London. It was a modern horror classic which served as a launching pad for Murphy’s career, with Nolan later recalling the poster of Murphy with his bald head and “crazy” eyes in a conversation for Entertainment Weekly. His profile continued to grow in 2005 following his roles in several successful films, namely the Scarecrow in “The Dark Knight” and the villain in the action thriller “Red Eye.” For the last two decades, he has built strong relationships with directors such as Boyle and Nolan and continuously wowed audiences with his talent for playing dark, troubled, and tormented characters. But these complex characters are not strictly villains. As Murphy said in an interview with The Guardian, “Villains are good if they’re well written, but if it’s one note or a trope, then they are dull.” He relishes playing these complex characters and likes scripts to stretch into “all the shades” of the human spectrum.
“I can’t remember which director said it, but he said it takes 30 years to make a good actor,” he said to PORT Magazine. 27 years later, coming off the heels of a starring role in a major film, Murphy appears to have achieved his aim.
In an industry that often rewards fast success, Cillian Murphy has chosen a different path. “Peaky Blinders” made the Irish actor a household name, and Nolan’s blockbuster epic took him even further. However, Murphy continued to pursue roles which were often underrated, because it is “a film that you're very sort of proud of and excited by.” Known for his introverted personality, Murphy has chosen a quiet, normal life away from the public eye, even revealing at one point that he did not enjoy the “personality part” of being an actor. “I don’t understand why it’s expected I’ll be scintillating on a talkshow,” he said in an interview with The Guardian. He is true to his word — Murphy’s bored face during interviews has become a popular meme. Indeed, 67 million people on TikTok have watched videos on “Cillian Murphy interview zoning out,” and they can’t seem to get enough of his dissociating clips. Part of his appeal to fans seems to stem from this authenticity, in contrast with so many other celebrities who aim to please.
To Murphy, character is in fact all that matters. Murphy is satisfied with being the man in the shadows, and though he may not be as flashy as Tommy Shelby with “that charisma and swagger,” he believes that this shows that “I’m doing my job” correctly. “Cillian and Tommy are almost polar opposites,” Steven Knight, the “Peaky Blinders” creator, attested in an interview with Esquire.
As recounted in the Esquire interview, when Murphy auditioned for the role, Knight doubted whether this very thin man was the right fit for a Bringham-based gangster. Murphy said a simple yet powerful thing then: “Remember, I’m an actor.” His point was that when he enters a room, he is not Tommy Shelby. But when he is acting, he can become anyone — a gangster, a woman, or a physicist.
What is so mesmerizing about Murphy’s eyes? It is not the color, but the complex, varied emotion that is seen in each glimpse. Murphy can draw people into a story and make them think twice about it afterwards. While he has worked for close to thirty years in the acting industry, making him one of the most prolific actors, neither the standard film crew hierarchy nor his fame will keep him from choosing what truly captivates him. His success is a natural result of his unwavering pursuit and love of the craft.'

I decided to try my hand at writing fic for a full-on comedy. I just discovered Ghosts on CBS a few months ago, then the UK version (I seem to be one of the few who enjoys both for different reasons). Anyhow this fic is based on the US version. It is going to be multi-chapter, and it will orbit around planning Isaac and Nigel's wedding, but the the whole gang is gonna be included, as the title implies: It Takes a Village to Plan a Wedding Below is a teensy excerpt.
Sam informs Jay the happy couple is accounted for and loops an arm through his to guide him along behind their ghost friends. “Not sure what’s going on right now, but I’ll keep you posted.”
“I wish I could see them too,” Jay grumbles under his breath. Not that he wants to make a whole big thing out of it. Sure it would be a totally cool power to have, but definitely not worth doing something that might kill him on the off chance he’d survive and gain Sam’s ability. Eric didn’t. He assumes most near-deathers don’t. So he'll take relying on his wife for all ghost-y news and convo updates over the alternative any day.
The group shuffles into the room to see an unfamiliar woman hovering in mid-air behind Nigel and Isaac. She is shimmering, translucent, and adorned in fine 18th century garb with hair done up neatly.
The new fiances take up posts on either side of her, and Isaac goes about the business of formal introductions. “Everyone, this is Beatrice. Beatrice, this is everyone. We’ve got the Livings, Sam and Jay, Sam is the one who can see us. And, in order of seniority, Thor, Sasappis, Nigel whom you just met, Hetty, Alberta, Flower, Pete, and Trevor.”
“Wait, Beatrice as in your wife?” Sam shrieks as murmurs of bewilderment ripple through the group. “Why? How?!”
Jay has adjusted to a life of constant twists and turns by now, but still. “Hold up, what? So, he and Nigel get engaged and like a second later his wife shows up? Isaac bro, she’s either here to give you her blessing, or rip your face off!”

Every series/special Greg, Alex and the contestants do these interviews and the contestants always get asked about Greg and Alex's relationship and I love the series 16 answers.
Sue Perkins
What did you make of Greg and Alex? I’m madly in love with both of them. Genuinely, madly in love. I think it’s an exercise in on-screen chemistry perfection. It’s the old schtick of the domineering bullying guy who dominates the other but actually needs him. They need each other. So there’s this fake assault and battery line going on, when actually, underneath it, it’s so fraternal and delicious. And they make each other laugh. I love them a lot. I think they’re very, very special. And for all Greg’s posturing and denigration, he’s got the biggest heart. Genuinely, I’m in love with them both and I don’t even care who knows it.
Julian Clary
How do you describe the relationship between Greg and Alex? Like a lot of marriages, it’s all different things mixed up, isn’t it? So there’s obviously affection, and there’s a very deep knowledge of each other. And it’s funny because you think Greg’s always the one in charge, but then you know that Alex is the one behind the tasks, so they subvert that. It’s complicated, just like proper relationships are. And it’s not at all like Morecambe and Wise, or any of these other partnerships. It’s a million miles away from that, which is unique, really.
Lucy Beaumont
What do you make of Greg and Alex’s relationship? They’re an odd couple. If you told me that they’d had sex, I would believe that. There’s like a submissive / dominant thing there. It’s fascinating because it just works.
Susan Wokoma
And what do you make of their relationship? Just pseudo-sexual, emotional torture, lots of heightism. They’re so peculiar. I love the moments where Greg gets really into it. I love it. They were such children. I miss their banter.
Sam Campbell
What have you got lined up after Taskmaster? Career-wise? I don’t know if I’m supposed to ... I guess I can talk about it. I’m going to be hosting a new show. Basically, you know after the rain when you see a worm? We are returning them to safety so it doesn’t end up covered in ants or something.

What is one of your smallest writing goals?
Actually finishing one of my smut fics 😳
🦷
Is there a chapter, scene, or WIP you're dreading to write (but is necessary to your plot)? Share a snippet or tell us about it!
One of my RoyJamie Bingo entries is based around Ted pulling a Parent Trap on the two. Shoves them into a flat found on the UK’s best equivalent to Airbnb. First night in, Roy wakes to Jamie having a night terror. (That is what’s linked below.)
But I keep spinning my wheels on something towards the end. Where Roy and Jamie return to Nelson Road and just cannot be their old version of normal. But since they were never really very observant of how fucking weird they were about each other, it is a comedy of errors. (So humor. But heart. The deadliest combination.)
““It’s okay, lad, let’s get you up a bit. Need to rinse off this sweat.”
And Jamie stands as Roy pulls him up by his shoulders and woodenly walks to the attached bath with Roy leading him. It takes him a moment to realize he’s leading a man in only a shirt, but barely even rolls his eyes at it. Jamie just stands there as Roy puts in the tub stopper, letting the bath start to fill with lukewarm water.
“Alright, in you go,” he says. Tries for kindly but was willing to settle when it came out as merely Not Gruff. But Jamie sort of stares at him blankly.
“You need to sit in the bath to rinse off the sweat, Tartt.” And Jamie nods a bit at that but doesn’t actually move. Roy’s sigh sounds very put upon as he grabs the hem of Jamie’s shirt and saying “lift” while tugging it. He quietly curses when he realizes that wasn’t enough to spur Jamie to actually lift his arms up so Roy could strip his sweat soaked shirt off himself. He curses once more, for good measure, before pulling it off and guiding him to sit.
And then has to look around until he finds a washcloth. Technically it would probably feel good to Tartt if it was soaped but Roy didn’t have it in him. Just quickly wiped along Jamie’s limbs. Helped him stand, walk back over the lip, and wrapped him in a towel.
He was about to just put him back in the same shirt but realized all that would accomplish was undoing his hard work. So he drug the little prick back into the bedroom before digging into the vibrant suitcase. JFC, Tartt. Really?
But Jamie was coming a bit out of his stupor. Not only didn’t fight Roy on, but even helped get his own pants on, and cooperated well enough that Roy got a new sleep shirt on him. And then realizes that Tartt’s bed was soaked in his sweat and so led him back to his own bedroom. Then tucks the little bastard in.”
From this ask game!

'Truth is not new. It is as ancient as the ancient of days. The Christ has been made manifest throughout all time in various forms and has appeared as many different people. They stalk through our minds, these people of the past, leaving in our minds the impressions of their thoughts and acts, their desires and aims, their hopes and their faith, and ofttimes their accomplishments and failures. They relive the history of the ages for us, telling and retelling the struggles of mankind, its comedy and its drama. The philosophy and the religion of all eras pass by as in review, and we watch them go from the freedom of inspired thought to their imprisonment in organization and human interpretation. We follow the flight of the universal Light as It inspires the meditations and prayers of Buddha, Shankara, Jesus, John and Paul; we see Its illumination touch the consciousness of these inspired souls; and again we witness the sad spectacle of this Light being chained by men in personalities. What is this Light men seek to personify? Why does not man push aside the veil covering his eyes that he may behold the impersonal Savior and Physician? Purifier of the individual soul and healer of the personal body, glorious Light of all ages-nameless, formless, universal, impersonal - O man, enlarge your vision and behold It here and now. It walks beside you by day and sits by your side at night; on your journey It travels as Guide and Protector; in your work It serves to inspire and direct. Open your consciousness, now, and let this Presence in,' 'The World Is New,' Joel Goldsmith
