College Au, I agree that you def should write it 👀👀
Ahh okay I’ve been tinkering with this for a bit! Thank you for this ask Danni!!
This is my first time writing for Maxiel and first time writing rpf in years so please be easy on me 😭 but of course feedback and any questions are welcome!! Inspired by this picture and the tags!!
Sorry for any mistakes! But I don’t think I can look or edit this anymore without going insane 🤪 enjoy!!!
Maxiel College AU where it’s a special day during junior year!
“C’mon one more DR!” Blake shouted from across the tennis court. The Austin sun beating down on them making the already humid day feel worse than it actually was.
“Yeah, nah mate,” Daniel called back as the three men walked toward the net where they had set their backpacks down to get in a quick tennis match. “Max is waiting for me. I promised I’d be back on time. He says it’s a special day.”
Daniel had been thinking all day about it.
Before leaving for class Max had whispered to Daniel something about a special day. In his sleepy haze all the Aussie could do was hum and try to pull his boyfriend back into the warm duvet covers away from the busy campus outside their window.
Every morning was a routine once the semester began. Max woke at 7 am for his 8 am lecture. Showered. Got dressed. Kissed Daniel before he headed out the door. Daniel, of course, didn’t have class until 1:30. He liked sleeping in and staying up late. Plus he worked at the local bar which meant late night shifts. Max didn’t mind it. They always made sure to leave the afternoons free around dinner time so they could catch up on the day before Max went to play FIFA or do homework and Daniel went to work.
“He said that? You don’t know what the special day is?” Scotty asked with a slight scoff knowing if he forgot a date Chloe would have his head.
Daniel rolled his eyes sliding his backpack onto his shoulders and hiding his sweaty curls under a black and green hat “no he didn’t say what it was. If I ask he might kill me so I’m off to get some flowers on my way home” he nodded hopping the day would reveal itself when he walked in the door.
After saying bye to Blake and Scotty, Daniel headed out to the local flower shop. It was small with a French exchange student behind the counter who flirted way too much with Max in his opinion. The green eyed student recommended a bouquet of roses. Cliche.
Instead Daniel opted for an assortment of red, yellow and white tulips. Like the ones Max spoke about from his home country. Daniel liked to get flowers often wanting to give Max a little piece of home since he couldn’t travel back to Holland often.
The jingle of his key alerted the cats of Daniel’s return to the small apartment. Once inside the cats curled around his ankles and purred against his leg welcoming him back. Daniel leaned down scratching both Jimmy and Sassy behind their ears with whispered ‘hey guys, where’s dad?’ He toed off his shoes by the door before walking towards the living room. Max wasn’t in his usual spot on the worn leather couch Daniel had practically begged Max to bring back after they found it on the side of the road last year.
“Hello?” He called out the crinkle of the cellophane echoing around the tulips in Daniel’s hand.
“Shit” Max’s quiet voice echoed coming from the kitchen. Daniel made his way over seeing Max fussing over…something? His broad shoulders hunched down pulling at the fabric of his black polo that were tucked into his jeans being held up by a black belt.
Max turned holding a tray in his hands with what should’ve been a cake. The white frosting and vanilla bread had clearly turned into a crumbly mess.
“It’s supposed to be a cake, of course, but I think I took the bread out too soon and it was too hot. Of course I just wanted it to be decorated before you got back-“ Max rambled. A grin spread on Daniels lips “a cake for this special day?” He asked trying to real more information out of his boyfriend about this mystery day.
Max raised an eyebrow and nodded “of course why wouldn’t there be a cake?” He says.
Cake. Birthday? No. Anniversary? No. Daniel still couldn’t wrack his brain about what this special day might be.
Max smirked at his boyfriend as he sets the tray down on the linoleum lined kitchen counter “you have no idea what today is huh?”
Shit. He was caught. Max could read him like a book but Daniel wouldn’t admit it of course. “What?! Of course I know what today is. I got you flowers. Tulips” he grinned handing over the bouquet.
Max inspects the flowers. Not as good as the ones from his hometown but he knew it was the thought that counted. Max looked his boyfriend in the eyes a grin on his lips as he speaks “then what is today?”
Daniel looks back for a moment. What other possible date would be important enough for a cake?
A laugh bubbles up from Max “you don’t even know!” he smirked happily moving to get a vase filled with water for his flowers. “Daniel it’s the day we met in class” he spoke over the water running into the green vase “three years ago, of course” he nodded shutting the water off and sliding the flowers into the water before setting them down “it’s called a meet cute. I think” he said before he gestured to the cake sat on the counter “that’s what Victoria called it. She said it would be cute to celebrate it.”
The words ‘happy 3 year meet cute’ scrawled out in red icing against the white frosting in Max’s handwriting
Daniel was stunned.
3 years. He couldn’t believe 3 years had flown by. He remembered walking into his Horticulture 120 lecture and the only spot left was next to Max at the front row. He was sure he’d drop the class. It was an elective after all. But then he turned and saw Max’s eyes. Blue. Like the Maldives. In that moment Daniel knew he had to stay. So he did and clumsily introduced himself. His braces giving him a slight lisp. But it was the best thing he had done. Now he had an apartment and two cats with that same boy. And they were celebrating meeting 3 year later.
Daniel gives his boyfriend a soft look before his own laughter filled the space between them “oh Maxy” he said “that’s adorable really. Thank you” he says admiring the icing work he had attempted winning his finger into the white frosting and licking it off his finger.
“Happy three year meet cute anniversary” he said leaning in kissing Max’s blushing cheeks.
Max smiled turning to look at his boyfriend “happy three year meet cute anniversary” he whispered before planting a kiss on Daniel lips.

Dr Flug x Fem reader who is the head of the department of black arts and witchcraft? Like him having a crush on her, it would be kind of ironic him being the head of the department of science and technology
A/N: oooo another Flug request! I love writing for this silly little nerd guy!!! One of my favorite comfort characters<33 fyi: had a hard time writing this, especially with his crushing stage so i just did alittle for it, i hope this works!!! ty sm for requesting!!!! I hope you enjoy~! {May edit later, im tired rn}
Dr. Flug × Fem. Witch Reader!
Tumblr media
•i feel like this man would be a huge skeptic towards magic. I mean, sure his boss is a demon and all, but he believes more in scientific reasoning then he actually does Magic. He thinks that there is a reasoning behind everything. being the head of the scientific technology department, he tried his best to study magic, but found ut a huge waste of his time, and ended up going back to his on projects
• when he first met you, it was on one his missions with the gang, and it was not going well for them. The hero they were after easily out maneuvered their plans, and had them dangerouslh close to defeat
• Flug was a mess, panicked and unsure what to do. If he got caught by a hero, Blackhat would sure as hell just leave him there and not care to come and retreave him. Let alone, he didnt want to get punished anymore then he hast to endure
• Flug thought they were goners, before, lo and behold, before the hero could take them into custody, you appeared. Quickly catching the hero off gaurd with a blast of magic to his side
• of course, the hero ended up taunting you, and launched himself at you, only for you to easily knock him out of thd sky and to the concrete with the wave of your hand
• as you and the hero quarled, Flug couldnt help but watch. He would had been planning to get out, but he was observing the battle. How you easily threw the hero around liks a toy. The hero didnt even manage to hit you a single time and you already had him to the ground.
• you had freed the trio before they could be taken from authorities. Easily clipping the lock off. The two of you locked eyes for a moment, but before Flug could say thank you, you were gone.
• Flug was quite appalled, his curiosity peaked, as he abd his team fled from the scene. Though, he wasnt able to get you out of his head. He had never seen or heard anything about a villain who easily threw around Heros without even touching them, and Flug knew everthing about every Villain in the town.
• When he got back to his lab, he automatically started to look up things about you, desprately searching up something to ease his curiosity and get you out of his head
• there wasnt to much about you that he could find. He had figured out you were a 'in and out' villain, hardly giving people enough time to look at you before you disappeared into a puff of smoke.
• reading into some reports about you, of people writing nonsense about a powerful villain that wasn't Blackhat, and ranting in painful grammar about a 'witch villain'
• this made Flug laugh, obviously not believing it one bit. Rolling his eyes he got off his computer and went back to work.
• though, he still couldnt get you out of his head. Thinking back to the way how easily you handled that hero, and didnt even lay a finger on him. Now that Flug thought about it, he didnt even see you get close to him at all. Which made the doctor ponder about you even more
• it started driving him insane
• Flug, for the next few times had a hard time focusing on his projects, caught in his mind about what you were. It ended up getting him into trouble, why couldnt you just leave him alone? He had so many questions, but no you to answer them
• finally came his once a month trip of errands he ran for the crew. Heading out to collect food, or certain parts he could use to work on his projects. He never liked these days, but he endured it never the less
• just as he was walking by, looking for supplies, he bumped into you on accident. He frantically apologized, but once he noticed it was you, he froze in his tracks. Looking up at you, as you looked down at him and reasured him that it was okay
• all of a sudden, all his questions flooded his mind. He sure didnt expect to find you here of all places! What were you doing here? Were you here on some sort of mission? What did you even need here?
• His thoughts got interrupted as you finally voiced that you recognized him, sending Flug into a blushing frenzy as he tried to play it off, muttering a thank you to you as he cleared his throat
• though, when you commented that you knew who he was, it caught him off guard. You knew who he was? No one really ever recognized him other than the bag wearing villain. Being a scientist didnt really give him many looks of pride.
• he was geniunly suprised when you told him his name, and that yoi recognized him from tv adds and some of his work. He didnt know how to feel, but when you complemented him, he nearly collapsed into jelly. No one really ever complemented him, let alone someone as pretty as you! It made his face flush under his bag as he attempted to calm himself
• Though, when you introduced yourself, he must had made a face when you mentioned magic to him. Cause you quickly responded to demonstrate your magic to him.
• turning your gaze to the nearest tin can, without even touching it you beckoned it over, making it levitate over to you.
• Flug watched curiously, eyeing the tin can as if trying to find the strong attached to it to find an explanation. As it levitated for a moment, you flicked your hand, only for the can to fly past Flugs head and hit the worker nearby in the back of his head at full force
• Flug was now a little less of a skeptic
• after that, you and Flug chatted for awhile, happily demonstrating some more of your magic for him, who he would watch closely and eagerly, trying to study it every time. You found it quite funny the way his eyes widened in curiosity
• you two ended up spending the rest of the day together, you helping him with finding his supplies, which he was greatful for. Usually it took him until nightfall to get everything done, but with your help he was able to get back to the manor by noon
• not only that, but he learned alot about you, and how you were also the head of your specialties. That stunned Flug, that you were a head of magic, and he happened to be the head of sciece and technology! No wonder the two of you ended up getting along quite well
• Flug expected his thoughts of you to decrease now that he had answers, but they ended up worsening. Now finding himself wanting to spend more time with you, and for you to show him more of your magic
• Now, the two of you ended up meeting eachother every month on Flugs outing days, so you guys could chat together and spend time with one another. You helping him and showing him your magic, and him happily showing you some of his project ideas.
• Over time, he found himself wanting to spend more and more time with you, getting excited when the day would come to meet up with you! But he still craved more contact with you
• He ended up giving you the adress to the mansion, so you could come over and visit, which you happily took the opportunity
• your visits became more frequent, which Flug was always delighted to see you!
• you would chat with him as he worked on his machines, or let Flug study some more of your magic. And boy, Flug certainly enjoyed the company. More say your company, he goy so happy when you visited him. Even if it was for a few minutes, he always was glad you decided to drop in, no matter how busy you were
• He loved your visits, it made him all giddy and happy, which he hadnt felt in a long time until you came into the picture. He didnt like the way you made his body warm at first, ungil he spent more time with you, he ended up waiting every day in hopes that you would come visit him
• one day, when you made his favorite flowers appear for him out of thin air, he nearly passed out
• he definitely found a way to preserve those flowers forever
• you started to make him feel weird, especially when you came in abd smiled at him, saying your common hello just made his heart lurch out for you. Getting all flustered when you complimented his work, or stood close to him, or even feeling the slightest bit of touch from you would send him to the ground
• he loved watching the way you preform your magic for him. Sometimes, he ended up watching you instead of the trick you were showing him. And when you commented about it he got all shy and babbled an apology, while you giggled which sent him deeper into his flusterdness, you absolutely found this adorable
• you, the wonderful witch you are, ended up enchanting his heart

Scientists have discovered that bacteria can create something like memories about when to form strategies that can cause dangerous infections in people, such as resistance to antibiotics and bacterial swarms when millions of bacteria come together on a single surface. The discovery—which has potential applications for preventing and combatting bacterial infections and addressing antibiotic-resistant bacteria—relates to a common chemical element bacterial cells can use to form and pass along these memories to their progeny over later generations. Researchers at The University of Texas at Austin found that E. coli bacteria use iron levels as a way to store information about different behaviors that can then be activated in response to certain stimuli. The findings are published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Scientists had previously observed that bacteria that had a prior experience of swarming (moving on a surface as a collective using flagella) improve subsequent swarming performance. The UT-led research team set out to learn why. Bacteria don't have neurons, synapses or nervous systems, so any memories are not like the ones of blowing out candles at a childhood birthday party. They are more like information stored on a computer.

In a new study conducted in a Panamanian forest, researchers from The University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin) discovered that adult trees were three times farther away from other adults of the same species than from those of different species, effectively distancing themselves in order to flourish.
[...]
“This is a stepping stone to understanding the dynamics of things like carbon storage that matter in relation to climate change,” said Annette Ostling, one of the authors of the study and an associate professor with UT Austin’s Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences and the Department of Integrative Biology, in the press release. “It’s such a fundamental question that, even if the applications are not yet known, there’s still a lot to learn, and this is one ingredient in understanding.” The study, “Pervasive within-species spatial repulsion among adult tropical trees,” was published in the journal Science. The research team discovered that individual species are more negatively impacted by the same species and the fungi, pathogens and insects that plague them. Thus, they create space in order to prevent the domination of any particular species, which leads to greater forest diversity.

i know i come back to post like once a year, but i thought i'd talk about how college is going and everything going on in my life. i know damn well nobody here cares (not trying to be all emo, i mean like- eh you get what i mean..) and- idk, too much shit has gone on. firstly, i havent exactly graduated from high school yet, im in this dual enrollment program, but i dont actually have any high school classes to take anymore? if that makes sense? im at this community college full time, and only go in 4/5 days out of the school week for like 1 hour each day (im off on fridays). I think it's really nice, and it'll put me ahead once i transfer to the college i actually want to attend (A&T!! Aggie pride or whatever lol). My mom wants me to pursue a master's degree, so i dont see why i shouldnt. Also, I want a degree in Computer Science, and I really want to be a game/software developer. I know people say 'AI will taker over all our jobs!!! you all will be out of a career!!' I.. don't exactly fear that, but, only time will tell I guess... (TW for SA talk after this, so if u don't like that, feel free to scroll.) secondly, I was in some relationship that I ended around May and i didn't really find out he- violated me, i guess, until after I ended it. I was telling my friends about a certain incident where I went it to give him a small kiss on the lips before leaving school and he took it further than I wanted and it really bothered me, and they told me that it was SA, and that realization sent me down a bit of a spiral. In addition, we used to make out and stuff in the school stairwell (bad idea, i know, dumb shit..), but after I ended this and got with my current boyfriend, whenever we were in a stairwell alone together, even if we're just walking through, I got- scared? almost? like an overwhelming urge to keep my distance and watch him, and- i really didn't like that. ive already had too many encounters with boys talking about my body in ways i didn't appreciate, and after i broke up with him he sent me some lame ass fucking apology about how 'he feels so guilty :(' like i would care. idk. i feel like im going through some 5 stages of grief LMAO. i've been working through it, but it still feels weird. bleh, idk >.< uhh some other stuff... i identify as goth (i like the term babybat so i prefer that lol) and started leaning more towards that kind of style and culture and expressing myself more freely now. i LOVE androgynous style, and basically aim to confuse people on whether im male or female in the near future. ummm uhhh i dunno :3 im more into video games and stuff, i rlly like honkai star rail and project sekai (ace attorney and sally face will always be my comfort games though) and uhhh idk what else to add. to anyone reading, please remember to love. uts damn near 3 am and idk what im saying anymore but pls show those around u that u love and care for them. you never know what a person is going thru, and your beautiful soul may just make more than a difference than u know. thanks for listening to my schizo ramblings.,.. goobnight....

Welding materials on the moon
Before humans can colonize the moon or Mars, scientists and engineers must first develop techniques for building permanent structures and pressurized habitats in harsh, thin-atmosphere and low-gravity environments.
Dr. Wei Li, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering in the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science at The University of Texas at Dallas, is developing a virtual lunar welding platform to troubleshoot assembling large structures in such conditions.
“As we try to return to the moon and reach Mars, keeping astronauts safe while achieving the missions is very important,” said Dr. Edward White, professor and department head of mechanical engineering and holder of a Jonsson School Chair. “Being in Earth’s orbit is a lot easier knowing that when things go wrong, we can make repairs and return safely. I’m really excited that Dr. Li’s research will help play an important role in making space travel safer and will enable us to successfully complete space missions.”
Li recently received an Early Stage Innovations three-year grant from NASA for up to $750,000 to support his study of welding on the surface of the moon. He was one of six researchers nationwide selected to receive the 2024 annual award, which is designed to accelerate the development of groundbreaking, high-risk/high-payoff space technologies.
“There are three main challenges for the astronauts working on the moon’s surface,” Li said. “The moon has a very thin atmosphere, so there are steep temperature changes, from around minus 387 degrees Fahrenheit to 260 degrees Fahrenheit. There is also an extreme vacuum environment due to the thin atmosphere. Finally, the gravity on the moon’s surface is only about one-sixth that of the Earth. The extreme environment can complicate the reliable implementation of building or manufacturing large structures on the moon’s surface and can lead to manufacturing defects.”
Welding metal in such an environment can cause defects that impact the material’s load-bearing capability, leading to fractures and ductile cracks; nevertheless, in-space assembly is vital to NASA’s long-term exploration goals, Li said.
“It would be very hard to establish regular machine shops on the moon’s surface to manufacture metal structures as we do on Earth,” Li said. “However, it could be possible to use spacecraft to ship metal components from the Earth to the moon, then deploy welding technology there to assemble the components into large structures that could enable the establishment of a human community.”
Li’s project will simulate lunar conditions to test the processes of electrical arc, laser and electron-beam welding in that type of environment. His virtual lunar welding platform simulates the welding process and welding-joint mechanical properties with a multiple-physics modeling approach. Among the equipment he is using is a custom-built, directed energy deposition machine, a technology typically used for additive manufacturing of metals. Li said the research also could be applied to fused deposition modeling, a type of 3D-printing process that can print nonmetallic parts in space.
Li, who directs the Comprehensive Advanced Manufacturing Lab in the Jonsson School, will work with his team to create the simulated environment at UT Dallas while working directly with NASA researchers, including Dr. Fredrick Michael from NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center.
Li said his team will validate the simulation framework and modeling results with both space-based and on-the-ground experiments, as well as with historical experimental flight data from Skylab, the first U.S. space station. He said the model could be developed further for other space environments, including Mars and the International Space Station.

I found research supporting what @what-if-i-just-did and @foone said. The University of Rochester's science communicator Lindsey Valich reported several recent studies on the topic, like on 2023-02-23:
Our eyes are never at rest. Instead, they remain in motion, even between our voluntary gaze shifts, through fixational eye movements—small, continuous movements of the eye that we are not aware of making…
In a paper published in Nature Communications…the research shows the visual system continually monitors motor activity, even when people believe they are maintaining a steady gaze.
She reported another on 2021-11-19:
Fixational eye movements are tiny movements of the eye—so small we humans aren’t even aware of them. Yet they play a large role in our ability to see letters, numbers, and objects at a distance.
In a new paper published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers…[were] studying how a type of fixational eye movement called a microsaccade affects the foveola, a small region at the center of the retina…
The researchers focused on microsaccades, tiny rapid gaze shifts that frequently occur when we’re examining fine details. It’s long been known that vision is transiently impaired during larger gaze shifts, such as those we are aware of making, for instance looking back and forth between two computer screens. This phenomenon of transiently impaired vision is known as saccadic suppression. Until now, however, it was unknown whether a suppression also occurs during microsaccades…
“We observed that microsaccades are accompanied by brief periods of visual suppression during which we are essentially blind…This brief loss of vision likely occurs so that we do not see the image of the world shifting around whenever we move our eyes. By suppressing perception during saccades, our visual system is able to create a stable percept.”
“Human Time Perception And Its Illusions” (David Eagleman, 2008-08-08) reviews many time-related optical illusions:
Here is a do-it-yourself demonstration to set the stage: look at your own eyes in a mirror and move your point of focus back and forth so that you're looking at your right eye, then at your left eye, and back again…
[B]ut here's the mystery: you never see your own eyes move. What happens to the gaps in time while your eyes are moving? Why doesn't your brain care about the small absences of visual input?
Eagleman (2008) specifically describes potential explanations of the “stopped clock” second hand illusion @foone mentioned:
In recent years, several groups looked at time perception around eye movements more carefully. This began with an examination of the ‘stopped clock’ illusion: upon first glance, the second hand of a clock sometimes seems to be stopped in place momentarily before it continues to tick at a normal pace.
Yarrow et al (2001) proposed that the scene the eyes land upon fills the time gap retrospectively [7], such that the eye movement is an integral part of the sense of time. Morrone and her colleagues then discovered that duration judgments were compressed during saccades [8]: when subjects were asked to judge an interval between two flashes near in time to a saccade (by comparison to two more targets well after the saccade), durations were underestimated by about a factor of two (Figure 1a).
More recently, Terao et al (2008) suggested a possible explanation for the saccade results, showing more generally that stimuli with reduced visibility (as stimuli are during a saccade) lead to the same sort of duration compressions [9]. While the data are clear, the mechanisms are still a subject of debate [10].
An intriguing explanatory mechanism for visual subjective time distortion is neuronal repetition suppression:
When a stimulus is shown repeatedly, the first appearance is judged to have a longer duration than successive stimuli [19-22]. Similarly, an ‘oddball’ stimulus in a repeated series will also be judged to have lasted longer than others of equal physical duration…
[N]euronal firing rates in higher cortical areas quickly become suppressed after repeated presentations of a stimulus [26-28], an effect generally known as repetition suppression…We have previously speculated that…a suppressed neural response corresponds to a shorter perceived duration [19].
Note that the duration distortions also occur with higher-level predictability. For example, if the series 1-1-1-1-1 is presented, the first stimulus appears longer…critically, the same illusion also occurs for the sequence 1-2-3-4-5 [19], presumably because the successive stimuli are predictable, even while their low-level shapes differ. This finding indicates that the predictability of successive stimuli involves higher cortical areas than the primary visual cortex, and that repetition suppression may be a special case of prediction suppression.
So, something I learnt the other day. So, you know how dinosaurs supposedly can't see you if you stand still? Well that myth is based on real-life lizards/etc and how eyes in general work. So, once my dad starts infodumping, here comes some other cool information. We, humans, can in fact, also not see something unless it's moving. We fixed this by having our eyes constantly shake. And then our brain compensates for us, so we don't have to have shaky vision.
What if aliens don't have this? Like. What if they find out when one of us was looking at something in the distance, and they walk around this thing that's in front of them, and the alien is confused so they bob their head and oh, there's a thing there, but how did the human know that, and then we explain and they're like, horrified.
Humans are apex predators. They can hunt in packs. They can hunt in pairs. They can hunt on their own. They're persistance predators, which is unheard of. They get stronger when they're mad or scared. They have this thing called 'body language' which acts like a type of hivemind, even if they'll claim it isn't. And. They can see you. When you're not moving. They can still see you. If you ever find yourself in a fight against a human, for whatever reason? Run. Run as fast as you can. And hope, pray if you have a religion, that they won't follow.
