You wanna know what absolutely pisses me off?
The completely unnecessarily limited options people get at food pantries. It's almost always the same basic shit like going bad fruits and veg and tomato soup cans and canned corn and dried beans and if you're lucky bread that isn't moldy and maybe even some old frozen meat of unknown quality.
But it is a known fucking fact how much grocery stores throw out ridiculous amounts of food every day. Foods that can still be eaten within a few days at least, things like frozen meals, snacks, lots of other frozen foods, produce, boxed meals, etc.
So why the fuck can't homeless or poor people have access to it, other than 'fuck poor people'? Why is there this rule of giving everyone the bare minimum when you're wasting SO MUCH?
Restaurants and bakeries too, to be honest. Bakeries throw out a lot of stuff if it's more than a day old even if it's not technically bad to eat, and they could have had something set up where they donate the leftovers

how the fuck do you get yourself to eat food when any amount of preparation feels entirely unreasonable
ive had such low energy the past like week and a half I'm barely eating enough food to get me through the day and def not like whole entire meals like I used to or intend to or sometimes was able to manage.
it especially sucks bc I loveeeee cooking I really do but cleaning up is such a chore it sucks all the joy out of cooking. and even when I know I enjoy cooking, the idea of standing for all that time and using all that energy to make food I will eat in less than ten minutes just. makes it not worth it
even like, making a sandwich. I'm not a huge sandwich person it's not really my jam. I'll eat them but I don't like go OH BOY SANDWICHES. idk. idk
simultaneously my sensory issues mean I typically dislike canned soup with meat/noodles/veg in it and I typically don't like most frozen means if they have meat in it. I just don't like the texture of meat when it's been frozen and microwaved. and when I don't cook, I don't have leftovers to eat for lunch when I come home from work which means I often just eat a little snack during my break.
i just don't know what to do and I don't think getting fast food is a good solution either because I don't have that kind of money to spend on groceries AND THEN ALSO for takeout or whatever
like I don't know what to do. I am so often not even very hungry and I know that's probably at least partially a side effect from my meds but then I just don't think about it and it's just such a decision paralysis meltdown inducing task to try and figure out what I'm going to eat for dinner it's like what even is the point. and I live by myself so there's nobody to share the load of cooking or even deciding what to do

Dating Jackson meant that you treasured every moment you had together. Owing to his busy schedule, even having him to yourself for an hour felt like a luxury. But often he had chores piled up that needed to be done in that same one hour. And so you'll had made it into a habit to do the most routine things together- from visiting the laundromat to cleaning the house. And he loved doing these domestic things with you, as he was able to shed the skin of being the famous star- Jackson Wang and instead was just Wang Jiaer around you. It meant doing most things together- with puppy Wang following you around everywhere you went. But grocery shopping was the one time you'll split up completely. He turns to the left aisle, you to the right aisle.

Clearly, one could see how your food choices could be simply described as veg-junk-spicy and his as non veg-organic-bland. You'll were poles apart, in your palates and had made your peace with the fact. With you, wearing a mask everytime he cooked something that gave off a pungent smell while he rolled his eyes & refused to kiss you when you'd just eaten something spicy that led to your skin feeling on fire.
But before you made it to the cash counter, you smiled at the oppositely laid out carts as you noticed some things in his cart that belonged to you & vice versa. Snacks & desserts held the key to both your hearts. In his cart were your all time favourites- choco pie, lindt & nutella. And you'd curated a list of his childhood treats from China such as rabbit milk candy, shanzha & sunflower seeds.
You knew each other's preferences perfectly & had managed to rub off the taste on the other as well. You could tell in the way he smiled, a grin stretching from ear to ear that he was pleased with your decisions & you chuckled fondly, seeing that he had managed to remember your cravings.
"You do realize we've both picked the cereal and ice cream?" You giggled & said.
"Never too much of those, am I right?" He replied as he shrugged & walked forward to pay the bill as you shook your head & followed him, interlinking your hand into his as he squeezed your hand tight. And while he made small talk with the cashier, you captured a mental snapshot of this perfect little outing, for this was just as joyful and memorable as any other grand date you'd been on. Life with your boyfriend was truly "La Dolce Vita"- a sweet boy, with a sweet tooth & a shopping bag filled with sweets.
"Why so impatient, princess?" He asked as he noticed you tapping your feet & nudging him with your elboe to rush things along. So you smirked & whispered softly in his ear, "I'm just eager to go home & eat some ice cream. Preferably off your abs, like that genius Ahgase suggested in the BuzzFeed thirst tweets video."
"Should've known it was you!! Why go to such great lengths when you could've just asked babe." He crooned back, his gaze so sultrily that you were worried he'd devour you right then & there. And you stood there frozen, as red as the Hawthorne berries in your hand. Waiting & bidding the time, till you finally got home.

So stiles gets into pot to help with his anxiety, and of course starts gaining some weight from the munchies. Derek though, keeps making fun of Stiles’s little pot belly and his bigger butt and his chubby face…until Stiles discovers that there’s a werewolf strain of pot out there. Derek’s waistline is doomed.
Derek doesn't know what he's missing. The only born wolf in their pack - he's way more of a "if i can't grow it or hunt it - I'm not eating" person, so it's lots of greens and veg and protein. He's NOT a Taco Bell, Doritos, cheetos, processed junk food, frozen hot pockets, poptart sort of person. Can't understand WHY Stiles likes it so much. (mostly when Stiles complains his pants don't fit AS he's snacking down on a box of snack cakes. What did he think was going to happen?) But....he can't deny he feels like he's missing out a little bit, not being able to get drunk or high. And when stiles finds a werewolf strain of pot and the entire pack is VERY excited about it...Derek resists it. Until he accidentally gives into his chocolate-sweet tooth and snags 2 of Stiles brownies that he was planning on bringing to Scott. And then suddenly...Derek GETS it. He's relaxed and reaching for the same bags of junk food that 2 days ago he told Stiles he would rather starve than eat. Plus, Stiles? He's got a decent tolerance, his munchie related weight is mostly from actually having his appetite back for the first time in awhile, having a bit of a junk food addition, and too many pizza and video game nights with Scott. So when he's smoking with Derek - it's a normal night for Stiles. Not so much for Derek... Derek has never been drunk or high a day in his life and he's NEVER eaten his weight in pizza before but suddenly he's VERY into it. Feels a little bit hazy, with a heavy, filled belly that somehow makes him both satisfied and a bit aroused... Derek's wondering why he didn't try this sooner! He's not even bothered when his pants start getting tight- Stiles has stayed in the "chubby" range for this long with his habit, so how much weight could Derek possibly gain? (Famous last words as you fast forward 5 years and see Derek stoned and taking up half the couch, lazily reaching out to stuff another brownie in his face, swallowing it with one bite.

Health update - Recipe challenge edition
Progress is slow but steady -- yay -- but I'm tapping the hivemind for help. Diverticulitis has some rules about what you're supposed to eat in recovery, and I've moved to the "bland foods only, no fiber" stage. But since I've been living on meal kits (make life bearable when you have the 1-2 punch of ADHD and Long COVID), and when I DON'T have active diverticulitis, I'm supposed to be eating the currently-forbidden high-fiber foods, I've got a really limited selection on-hand of what I was able to afford in my last grocery order. What I've got -- chicken breasts, frozen veggie mix (broccoli, cauliflower, carrot), white bread, eggs, applesauce. There's also some cheese and lemon-flavored yoghurt, but only for snacks occasionally because I can't have dairy anywhere near the cipro dose. I got bananas with my grocery order, but they arrived incredibly green, so I need to let them soften up for a while. I've gone through about every combination of eggs and toast that I can. Made a fryup with eggs, veggies, and chicken this afternoon. There's just chicken and veg, of course. Anyone have any inspired ideas about what I can do next? I was really excited to have something NOT toast today, but this food combo gets boring fast, and I'm on it until Wednesday.

Thoughts: I slept late last night so I woke up a little bit later. Lucky I was able to work from home so I didn't go to the gym in the morning.

Thoughts: After work, I headed to the gym to work on my glutes plus also getting in some cardio.

Tuna salad wrap with 25g of tuna, a low carb wrap, with sriracha (5ml), tomato (55g), lettuce (17g), salad mix (16g) and some mushroom (20g).
On the side I had some frozen mandarins (60g)
Cal: 187g | Protein: 16.6g
Thoughts: I really wasn't that hungry to begin with but I still ate. The food was filling enough and kept me nice and satisfied until dinner time. But I also occupied my time by cleaning. I did a lot of cleaning today like my washing, cleaning my bathroom and my bedroom.

On the side I had two slices of brown rice cakes.

Total Cal: 1104 (Goal 1200)

Thoughts: Today was really good. I really enjoyed my dinner and will most likely have it again tomorrow. Having a wrap was also a good idea as it kept me full for the day. Am starting to get used to this and understanding my limits and what I like and can handle.

hi !!! i saw ur post and the best advice i give you is to get into meal prepping!!! its seriously one of the best things you can do for yourself if you live alone and have to cook every day. theres more than one way to do this too, you can meal prep whole meals by marinating proteins and freezing them to use later in the week, or you can meal prep ingredients by pre-washing veggies and mincing tons of garlic/ginger/etc and storing them to make cooking later way easier!! you'd just need to dedicated 1 full day or 2 half days to meal prep for the week but once its done it makes things sm easier!
also, i always ALWAYS cook things in big batches to last me maybe 2-3 meals, just in case im dead tired the next day and have no energy to do anything but throw something in the microwave. and if you end up not wanting to eat that specific thing the next day, you can always freeze that too for later use :3. your freezer is going to be your best friend. theres tons of guides and recipes you can find online for easy ways to meal prep. it can get overwhelming bc of the many options but its best to just pick 3-ish very different dishes (flavor wise) and make big batches of them and then store and alternate throughout the days.
another huge tip is dont be afraid of frozen foods, if your budget allows then buying some frozen burgers or nuggets or whatever you fancy can honestly be a lifesaver in emergencies too (usually if im going through an episode or period of fatigue, those come in really handy for me).
and sometimes if i have literally nothing prepped in my fridge ill just take 1 protein 1 carb and whatever veggies i might have and throw it on a pan with some sauces/seasoning. if i dont have a protein/carb/veg i just leave it out and load on whatever i do have in the fridge. and if all else fails, snacking is always an option.
and even if you've done all of this, sometimes you might not have the energy to even get up from bed or entertain the thought of eating, and thats okay. theres no shame in skipping a meal here and there, theres been many a times that ive simply skipped meals because of decision paralysis trying to figure out what to eat. adulting is extremely hard!!! and stressful!!! we're all just bumbling along trying to figure it out.

advice for letting go of addiction to junk food? /:
I find that attachment to junk food is often due in part to not really ever falling in love with nourishing whole food ingredients. You're only gonna ever find joy in turning away from junk food when you're just as, or more, attracted to the whole food alternatives you're giving yourself. It shouldn't be about punishment or self-denial. It's about satisfaction, excitement, and self-love. Don't beat yourself up about your current situation. Simply, step forward into this new journey with patience & self-compassion.
💚So, first things first is really developing a longgg list of whole foods that you enjoy. Different fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, seaweeds, foraged plants, seeds, nuts, herbs & spices, and so on. I recommend mostly purchasing what's in season (the taste, texture, and price points tend to be way better!), and visiting farmer's markets when possible (in my state, they take food stamps and have tons of discounts, to make the produce more accessible to all. I hope it's similar where you are). You may have to do some learning about how to identify fresh & ripe produce, determine how to identify good quality, comparing the tastes depending on food preparation methods (boiled vs roasted vs fresh vs pickled), and little things like that. Don't be afraid to try new things. You will likely find that you grow to like things you would've formerly disliked.
💚Next is to get into finding alternatives for your previous favorites. Especially snacks or quick meals. So, let's say that you are super into potato chips and instant noodles...swap that for homemade chips or wedges (you can make them in the microwave, air fryer, or oven - with little to no oil) & a simple noodle soup (packed with herbs, some miso and/or seaweed, a few veggies of your choice, and anything else you might like).
💚It's critical as well to really develop a rolling menu of recipes to make yourself. Your meals don't have to be complex or take ages (something like a taco bowl is great). Focus on simple but flavor-filled meals by highlighting the fresh flavors and spices, and by creating a well-rounded flavor profile in your dishes (for savory dishes: umami/salty + sour + sweet + optionally herby, spicy, and/or bitter). An accent flavor (or something to make the dish pop) is also great, such as citrus zest, liquid aminos, coconut, paprika, sesame seeds, green onion. Have ideas for breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, desserts, sauces & dressings, drinks, and snacks & dips.
💚Notice keenly how much better you feel when you reduce the junk food. Choose that good feeling over some really short-lived gratification. Notice, too, how poorly junk food can leave you feeling.
💚Learn to journal or tap into a hobby when your emotions get high and you want something unhealthy to "drown out your feelings." It's not about the fact that those foods aren't great for you. It's about paying attention to your feelings instead of stuffing them away.
💚Eliminate the misconception that it's cheaper eating junk food. You're less likely to feel the natural satiation point when you're eating low nourishment foods, so overeating is quite normal when you eat lots of processed foods. Also, the processing of such foods often is less kind on the earth compared to whole plant foods. So, it's expensive in that larger scale too. And you just aren't your best self - less energy, motivation, and stuff are likely when junk food is your primary fuel. The most affordable foods worldwide are typically satiating whole plant foods (grains, legumes, potatoes, etc).
💚Don't keep junk food around all the time. It turns into an 'out of sight, out of mind' thing.
💚Change the way you grocery shop. Spend time in the produce section especially. Always leave with things like greens, seasonal fruit, frozen fruit/veg, root veggies, etc. Discover which stores have the best options and actually stock quality produce. Wholesalers/big box stores & ethnic markets tend to do pretty good.
💚Create new habits. When you get home from work, you might be used to eating a certain snack. Interrupt that habit with a new one.
💚Stay hydrated. Water-rich produce (like cucumbers, oranges, leafy greens, berries) and drinking water can both help. Sometimes, we seek food when we're actually thirsty.
💚Start your days on a good note with fresh flavors. I recommend fruit for the sweetness and energy. And make sure your meals are satisfying and nutrient-dense, so you aren't starving and looking for energy drinks or anything an hour later.
💚Don't be all-or-nothing in your approach. This helps you to avoid that punishment mindset. It's just about choosing the food that really makes you feel good and happy and content.
💚Try out flavors from around the world. Get into ingredients and flavor profiles you've been missing out on. For example, rosewater, tomatillos, various mushrooms, berbere spice, different curries, dragonfruit, pandan. I just love traveling via my plates. It's an easy way to romanticize your life.
💚Learn to make a good, hearty, interesting salad. Smoothie bowls are a good thing to learn too. These are low-effort meals that are great when the weather is hot, you're busy, and/or your energy is low.
💚Get into making your own condiments. These can add an extra kick of flavor and interest for your dishes. For example, herb infused vinegars and oils, hot sauce, pickled veggies, rich sauces, etc.
💚Avoid food waste. Often when people are trying to eat better, the produce they purchase often goes bad before they can incorporate it into meals. Store items properly to extend their shelf life. Buy some fruit somewhat underripe (if they're a kind that ripens off the tree). Freeze things before they can go bad. Make soup broths, pickles, kimchi, jams, sauces, etc. Make meals around what is ready to be used. Also, don't be overly adventurous and buy too many unfamiliar ingredients at once.
💚And I'll end on an unexpected one. Spend more time outside in nature. You are typically become appreciative all those colors and scents and intrigue in simple/slow food meals when you do.
