What this Vengasmut makes me realise is that my perception of two Europops was an Anglocentric fiction. Instead it’s lap dances, topless burlesque, champagne foam spurting over bare thighs. This is bubblegum music, no doubt, but hardly a kids’ cartoon. In the video, he wears a sparkly red cowboy hat.Īh, though, the video, one look at which causes me to hastily revise any generalisation I might have had about the Vengaboys and their audience. The most enjoyable touches on the single are its purely dumbest – the chorus, of course, but also the keyboard-preset “Woo! Woo Woo!” bits in the breakdown, and the robodude who pops up to announce “Ven-ga-boys-are-back-in-town” and “Let’s-have-some-fun”. Vengaworld, on first impression, is a world in which the Vengaboys get on the Vengabus and go party: it has a perfect cartoon simplicity that matches the cheerful inanity of “Boom Boom Boom Boom”. There has been lots of impeccably high-fashion European music, of course, but when you’re pitching Esperanto pop at a market that’s a patchwork of cultures and languages, the nuances of style are sometimes the first casualty. The two waves of Europop have something in common: neither are remotely bothered about looking cool. And for a few months in the Summer of 1999 the Vengaboys were its hottest ticket. It was a music built on gleeful gimmickry and seemed to sell mostly to the continent’s kids. The second, led by Aqua, was also designed for dancing, but as much in school discos as tourist nightspots. The first was a club music – a polyglot of house, hip-hop and rave heralded by Snap! and epitomised by 2 Unlimited and Culture Beat. Vengaboys - "We Like to Party! (The Vengabus)" 1998 Eurodance / Eurohouse / Europop

The Vengaboys really struggled for a little bit to break out internationally before managing to basically become a co-ed Eurodance/Europop version of The Village People. Their first two singles, "Parada de Tettas" (which I guess translates to "Parade of Tits"?), and "To Brazil" both managed to chart in their home country of the Netherlands in 1997, but nowhere outside of the Benelux region (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg), besides Hong Kong, did any label seem interested in picking up either song.

Sometime around 1998, though, the group's producers, Danski & Delmundo, figured it all out: they found that patented, trancey, fuzzy-buzzy, honking Vengaboys synth sound. And its arrival was marked by a song called "Up & Down," which, if you've never heard it, is remarkably similar to "We Like to Party! (The Vengabus)"

So, "Up & Down" represented the start of the Vengaboys' turn-of-the-millennium Euro-dominance. It would become the first single of theirs to really be picked up internationally, and it smashed, particularly in the UK, where it reached #4 on the singles chart and #1 on the dance chart. And in the US, while it didn't touch the Billboard Hot 100, it still topped the publication's dance chart too.

Now, here's where things can get a tad confusing, though: after the Vengaboys released "Up & Down," they followed it up in April of 1998 with their hard-to-find, Dutch-only debut album, Up & Down – The Party Album!, which is not to be confused with their *international* debut album, The Party Album!, which came out over a year later; both releases happen to have pretty different track lists, and the original Dutch-only album only has one song on it that actually uses what would end up becoming the group's famous synth.

In fact, while both the Dutch and international releases have a song on them called "We Like to Party," they are actually two completely different versions. The one that went stratospheric and got the Vengaboys to really break out in the US contains the synth sound, whereas the original version off the Dutch-only album doesn't. And instead, the one from the Dutch-only album is like a weird breakbeat-Eurotrance thing that sounds like it *might* be sampling Slick Rick's "we like to party" line from "La-Di-Da-Di"??? Give a listen to this rareness. It took me multiple YouTube searches to find it, and a 90s throwback DJ might find some use for it, to blend it with the far more popular version 👀.

So, now, knowing about this particular track, here's what I think happened: Danski & Delmundo saw that their group had finally found success because of that trademark synth in "Up & Down," and they thought that they could earn another big hit if they had just used it again. So they constructed a pretty similar beat, repurposed the titular line from the original version of "We Like to Party," and then had group member Denise Post-Van Rijswijk sing some lyrics over it, which happened to include what would become one of the catchiest choruses of the entire decade. And voila, the Vengaboys then had an even bigger worldwide hit than "Up & Down" in "We Like to Party! (The Vengabus)."

This version of the song not only ended up slaying in Europe, but because it had lyrics, it became the group's biggest American hit too, reaching #26 on the Hot 100. And then after that one came the group's third straight single to use the synth: "Boom Boom Boom Boom."

Now, if you actually doubted my comparison of the Vengaboys to the Village People before, here's two things: one, the art for The Party Album! literally has the two male members of the group drawn as a cowboy and a sailor; and two, the music video for "We Like to Party! (The Vengabus)" has a short scene in it in which the Vengaboys run into a group of guys who are dressed as the Village People and are doing the "YMCA" dance; but the Vengaboys, who are a mix of bored and befuddled by their presence, end up pushing them aside, so as to say, "Out of the way, Village People! The new breed, The Vengaboys, are here!"

And as far as Europe goes, they weren't wrong. They'd never have another hit in the US after "Boom Boom Boom Boom," but they'd keep up the momentum with The Platinum Album, and now they're still beloved over there as a nostalgia act more than two decades later. And the Vengaboys would remain relevant in the US too, of course, with Six Flags appropriating "We Like to Party! (The Vengabus)" as its own theme song in 2004, which came with an iconic ad campaign that featured a dancing, besuited old man called Mr. Six, who, according to this credible Reddit comment I found, was actually just a 30-year old guy in prosthetic makeup?! 😲

that being said omg those lyrics tho. i did wonder who would be who. i feel like obi-wan is more likely to be the one to at least try to be with another person after being with anakin and breaking up for whatever reason but i don't see him falling like this and then (trying to) killing his ex sjsjsnsn. this level of obsession is more anakin’s forte. that being said i think an obi-wan who quietly seethes with jealousy is just absolutely delicious to me.

anyway!! yeah, i think it would be more anakin (or rather vader, really, if you closely follow the lyrics) chasing obi-wan. and the thought of that is devastating, isn't it. i wouldn't be able to (or even want to tbh) write something like this but yeah, i think vader would kill obi-wan and his potential new partner to make sure nobody else would have his former master if he himself can't have him. its a bit murky tbh because while anakin/vader do have these violent outbursts (anakin with clovis, and vader is, well, vader and also canonically kills obi-wan) but anakin (and by extension vader) (they're not separate people, im just trying to distinguish moments of his life sksjsnsksk) didn't physically attack padme over clovis, he “only” choked her when he first fell and was already steeped deeper in the dark side than ever before, therefore already more twisted and enraged and out of control. so there is still, i suppose, a fine line to walk between him not actually wanting to hurt the person he loves and him being so utterly deranged that he does (nearly) kill them. so it would depend which nuance you want to give to the setting and story. because i could also see him killing the partner but not obi-wan, and make this be a sort, idk, taunt? or threat and a promise that if he can't have obi-wan, he'll make sure nobody else will, but because he's also cruel and vindictive and possessive but in a way that makes him unwilling to actually kill obi-wan, he'd go for killing every person who tries to get close to obi-wan. which is just very fucked up and dark and very unhappy.

so i was talking to the other tenured soc instructor at the awards ceremony yesterday about how karaoke feels like the safest, most comfortable way to sing for me because everyone is sloshed and will either not remember anything outrageous or obnoxious i will do or they will assume that i’m as sloshed as everyone else and think nothing of it

He thunders down the hall only to walk into the living room finding you jumping on the sofa swigging from a large half empty bottle of vodka one heel abandoned on the floor and the other still clinging to your ankle and your pants on the floor.

Daddy is not happy, and even in your drunk state and one low growl has you quieten down quickly trail off mid lyric.

"Boom boom... boomer... i want you in... my room?" You giggle pointing at him trying to make him crack a smile at his nick name boomer being incorporated into the song.

He doesnt find it funny

And before he can even yell a single word your bending over hurling on the new rug your jumping taking its toll.

"Are you done?" He seethes, he dosent care about the rug, he is angry over you staying out to late, wandering off, not texting him your location and driking far more than is acceptable.

You made yourself vulnerable, while he wants to scream and scold you he just glares at you biding his time.

He wont punish you when your drunk, he wants you to be completely sober for your punishment, the vodka could numb the pain of a red ass and he isn't letting anything lessen the sore ass your about to get.

So instead of shouting and chastising he simple points a shaking finger to the door.

"Shower. And. Bed. Now." You pouts but nod trying to skulk past him but he stops you with a single hand on your tummy then holds the other out for the bottle.

You hand it over and he lets you exit the room now starting to feel sorry for yourself.

Love Locket 7: Karaoke Weekend

Mika had a family tradition with her mother and her friends to sing karaoke on the holidays. Mika had explained this tradition to the boys and upon hearing this wanted to experience karaoke. Which resulted in weekends where Mika or the boys would sing. Let's just say when people sing, you might learn more about them. Like Mika despite looking like she only liked cute songs could belt and growl when she sang metal or rock songs. Which often leads to Sam and Matthew getting hyped to shout along as well. Karaoke weekends were a toss-up between being happy-go-fun times or shouting the anger away and making the neighbors wonder if you were trying to summon demons. They just didn't realize that the house was already guarded by 5 demons.

Mika was a triple threat on the stage she could sing, she could act, and she could dance. Her only downside was that she couldn't really play well on the piano yet. But, Erik was her personal teacher. So when it came down to karaoke weekend the boys would often hand over the mic to Mika since she loved it. But, it ended up Mika would pick a song to duet with one of the boys.

Sam and Matthew where the worse singers of the group. But, Mika never put them down for it. In fact, on the weekdays she would pick songs that Sam and Matthew could at least get a decent score on the karaoke machine they had.

If Sam attempted to sing he was often flat. So Mika often chose metal, rock, rap songs which Sam could speed talk or belt the lyrics to. Since Sam had that awsome growl tone and was not afraid to let go and shout if Mika was hyping him up to it. Sam was also the quickest talker and quicker to pick up human slang. Picking up songs by Watsky or Eminem were easier for Sam than Matthew.

For Matthew, well this boy was off key. Mika often made him memorize the lyrics to really popular tik tok songs or just classic songs that people would know. Just so that Matthew could join in with her to scream along. Often Mika and Matthew would tackle songs like FAME by Abba, It's Raining Men by the Weather Girls, Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice, U Can't  Touch This by MC Hammer, Boom Boom Boom by Vengaboys, or Mambo Number 5 by Lou Bega. Current songs would be Born This Way by Lady Gaga, Thrift Shop by Macklemore, Gold Digger by Kanye West, Bad guy by Billie Eilish, and Montero by Lil Nas X. Of course their are other pop songs you know, but I am lazy to list them all.

Erik would teach Matthew how to sing to save his ears, but since Matthew only to entertain Mika there was no reason for him to.

Sam and Matthew would end up going to Erik on their own when Mika wasn't in school to at least learn. Since Mika often challenged Sam to have growl matches with her on some songs. While with Matthew, Mika often gave him the mic just so she could dance around. Unless he held her hand and pulled her closer.

Damien and Erik both held the natural ability to sing.

When Erik and Mika sang togther Mika often acted to the best of her ability and Erik could return the favor. With Erik and Mika it was as if the two when singing went into their own little world their voices complementing and pulling emotion into the song whether the two intended to or not. When songs ended Erik and Mika with often both breathless or teary. But, always satisfied. Erik and Mika togther was like having a free personal theater show taking you through the highs and lows of a love, argument, battle, or sadness.

Damien was very shy and required encouragement to sing which often meant Mika had to hold him while he sang. When they sang together often Mika choose happy love songs. Since Damien had a higher chance of crying during a song than Erik did. After any song Damien could usually be found in a hug with Mika or hanging around Sam. Eventually, Damien could be found singing or humming around the house. This would often meant that Mika would listen in, join in, or give him hugs. Damien wouldn't complain of affection and often just liked the feeling of comfort it gave.

James wasn't to bad, but often when he sung one mistake or off note made him upset and he would stop singing. Mika would often have to encourage him to finish the song or she would force restart it and sing with him.

Mika was a theater kid by nature despite her affinity for academic excellence. She only managed to get into acting after highschool since her dad wasn't on her back anyway more. So when she was at college she often brought musicals and scripts home meaning the boys where her partners.

When Mika wasn't around, the boys didn't often sing together. However, James, Erik, and Damien would sometimes start singing a bit of a musical they knew or from Mika that would pull some of the other boys even Sam and Matthew. Well, Sam would recite the lyrics while Matthew would hum the tune.

I forgot to mention most weekend Karaoke days were done sober. However, on a few days Mika would get tipsy or drunk until the boys had to tuck her in. The boys didn't really get drunk on human alcoholic drinks. But, Erik knew people who could get the boys drinks if need be.

If Mika asked the boys to be drunk on karaoke nights well it was definitely a sight. Sam would get drunk the fastest, then sing and unintentionally saying funny things while the song was going on. Often Drunk Sam could always be found snacking on something or in some position that made no sense. Watching Drunk Sam for to long was like watching a cartoon trying to figure out how things worked.

While, Drunk Damine was very flirty and known to dance around trying to be sexy with whatever the song was. Stopping him from removing his clothes was part of the routine, but often Drunk Damien was shirtless.

Matthew who originally would be giggly and hyper with Mika, after drinking would tone down. Drunk Matthew would be deadpan statements like "Those words are fuzzy I can't read them. I don't sound good take my turn". Matthew was often the one having to take care of his brothers when people got drunk.

James and Erik held their alcohol like champs.

Drunk James was often a whiny mess and would end up complaining about the song or life. Drunk Erik would end up glaring at the lyrics to pick it apart and find the deeper meaning to the song. Erik would sing then stop to analyze as the song went on Mika or one of the other boys would have to force him to continue. Usually if Erik or James were drunk the party was already winding down anyway and Matthew would have to put the mic away.

Welp, at the end of the day karaoke weekends were a blast. If it became drunk karaoke weekend things just got weird.

Life In Hogwarts

Post Hogwarts

A few years after Carson graduates from Hogwarts, the two bump into each other in the Ministry while getting his license for St. Mungo’s. They catch up for a bit before Carson tries to make up an excuse to leave.

After all the times of Carson avoiding him for years, Chester became desperate and corners him and Carson finally admits his feelings leaving Chester at a loss for words. Now it was Chester’s turn to avoid Carson just to process this new information.

While at a pub, he finds both Tulip and Veruca there. After telling them about what happened, both women tease him for finding out this late.

After some time of him looking back on everything, Chester started to realize why he’s been feeling so empty and annoyed whenever Carson wasn’t around and bothering someone else.

They both finally take the time talk about everything and agreed to take things slow. Carson also started acting like his old self around Chester more.

Although Carson has matured over the years and hardly does pranks nowadays, he still manages to give Chester a headache every now and then.

When they both came out to their friends, Felix took it upon himself to gloat about how he knew before him. Everyone else was pretty much “it’s about time, it hurt just watching both of you beat around the bush like that”

Few years into their relationship they eventually get married. Chester was the one that proposed. Although there was that joke proposal by Carson where they went to a museum for a date and Carson popped out a ring pop. Chester was both slightly amused, and embarrassed.

The thought of kids didn’t cross either of their minds until they come across a foster family. They meet a young boy named Mateo. After getting to know the kid, both Chester and Carson took a liking to him. They later adopted Mateo as their son.

Headcanons

There’s a lot of head pats and shoulder rubs between these two.

Chester always make sure to take Carson’s best interests to heart. And even when Carson claims he doesn’t want to disappoint him, Chester assures Carson that his feelings and comfort are just as important as his own.

Carson still continues his compliments to Chester about his bum.

Constant blushing from Chester every time Carson makes explicit and suggestive jokes towards him.

Mateo takes a bit after Carson with the jokes, while he shares more interests with Chester.

While he loves his fathers, Mateo is definitely closer to Chester. He finds Carson to be a little too extroverted at times and worries about him.

They don’t own any pets due to Carson’s never ending ‘abuse’ from animals and creatures. So most dates involving animals are out of the question.

Chester actually caught Mateo scaring Carson once with a puffskein. Carson was on top of a shelf holding a picture frame as a shield and begging Mateo not to bring the ball of fluff any closer. It was a funny sight but Chester immediately put a stop to it.

I gave up near the end of post Hogwarts that I just started listing off headcanons instead.

I was also so tempted to do the fluff alphabet for these two, but I still haven’t done it for Tulip x Carson yet. Well I started on it but I never actually finished it... So maybe when I finish theirs, I’ll work on the fluff alphabet for Charson. I can go into more depth over some headcanons for them there.

I may also update DieRuca’s Fluff Alphabet too once I finish Glitter Bomb’s own.
