This poll is a bit different but I’m curious about it and that’s why I made the blog so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

since I know this might be a viewpoint some people havent seen before, here’s the explanation for the ‘I want queerphobia in my fake worlds’:

I see the first option touted as ‘the ideal queer representation’ a lot, but as a queer fantasy writer I much prefer the culture of societal outcasts that band together, and narratives of people saying ‘fuck society’. Of course I want queerphobia to be completely gone irl, but it’s much easier for me to relate to characters who have gone through it, than to relate to characters who are treated like everyone else. a queer person treated like normal has not remotely been my experience, and so I prefer to have queer characters not treated normally, both so I can relate to them and so you can root for them and say ‘yes! change the system!’

This is fiction, the characters don’t have to live in an ideal world, the irl world sucks in many ways and exploring how it sucks is a huge part of making fake worlds.

all of this of course is with the caveat that it’s done well. A queer or ally writer writing a world with queerphobia as a way to show people defying society can be a good thing, is much different to a bigot writing queerphobia in to show it as ‘how things should be’, or someone doing it because that’s the only way they can envision a new world (as having the same bigotries as this one.)

Just watched SNW ad astra per aspera and while it actually was a pretty solid episode it showed various Vulcan admirals which I did not vibe with tbh. Like I thought the whole point of Spock going to Starfleet being so outrageous was because he was the first Vulcan to do so?? Idk would love to hear your thoughts

i haven’t watched that episode yet (i’m working through season 1 but i actually can’t stand it so it’s taking forever) yeah i thought he was the first one too, i guess they could explain it away by saying that he was just one of the first but that still doesn’t really make sense. or maybe they could say that Spock was just the first half-vulcan in starfleet (which obviously he was either way but im p sure they said in tos that he was the first vulcan) and that they just happened not to mention the multiple vulcan admirals that were supposedly already there? idk that’s also really stupid

at this point literally the only way most of this stuff would make sense is if it’s an alternate timeline but the way they keep establishing some continuities is what’s really confusing me like

i can’t remember whether it was directly said that he was the first but either way, it was a common occurrence for people in tos to be shocked that a vulcan was, not only working for starfleet, but that he was the first officer. so even if it wasn’t directly established, why would anyone be shocked by a vulcan being first officer if there was already multiple vulcan admirals?

but then also they established that carol marcus is pregnant in ~2258 or 2259, meaning david marcus will be born in ~2260, which goes along with the timeline of him being about 25 in the search for spock, which takes place in 2285

so they want to establish continuities like that, to lead on fans of the original series, while also screwing around with already established facts, like spock being the first vulcan in starfleet and the gorn and everything else they’ve fucked up already.

also i was just looking stuff up about it, im pretty sure there was a vulcan admiral added in discovery (patar?), so it’s still a bad storyline created by a bad prequel but we can’t really blame snw for fucking that up since discovery got to it first

girl no it didn’t, none of that shits canon idc what you say. fuck with the timelines all you want, anything other than tos can’t overwrite tos canon no matter what you change about your prequels. like tos is canon, it’s what everything else is based on, say what you want about it but the original series will always hold the main position in star trek canon no matter how many other timelines are created.

(i’m so sorry if you didn’t want that long of a reply i guess i had a lot to say about it, also please someone correct me if any of this information is incorrect)
