It’s a trenchbaby! This little goober was one of the reasons I was excited to visit the museum.

Those who know @duncandonuts06‘s art recognize that this is Schätzchen. Well one of his siblings. This darling was built in 1917 by Henschel Cassel.

It hid away a bit, but I found him 😼

Continuing the Remembrance Day theme with an oc I haven't formally introduced yet, No. 303!
303 (he/him) is a War Department Hunslet 4-6-0T, also affectionally known by its nickname the "War Office." I'll save most of his lore for when I finally get around to doing his ref sheet but I will offer a few tidbits!
He survives WWI and carries a large, deforming scar across the left side of his face from his service. (He has both eyes, he's just winking haha)
His nose was also broken during the war, leaving it crooked and misshapen. He believes in wearing his scars with pride, but, deep down is still quite self-conscious of his battered face.
He's best friends with Dave and sees him like a mentor and an older brother. He meets Schatzchen post-war and becomes fine friends with him as well.
303 (his only identifier and number) is shared by a real Hunslet (works number No. 1215) who served as his inspiration and, as I take it, is the only remaining "War Office" still running. Schatzi was also inspired by a real Brigadelok: No. 1091 (works number No. 15968) and No. 945 (works number No. 14913)
that's all folks!

The HMS Sprängaren (transl. "The Blaster") came to the Swedish navy in 1918 as a mine-sweeper and was in the 1930's assigned as a towing ship, though originally she was classified as a "vedette ship", which makes for an interesting series of classifications. She continued in her duties into the 1990's, but has been restored by a Veteran's association.
She got her name to fame being the ship that towed the salvaged Vasa ship in the 1960's, and she is today the only WW1-era naval vessel in the world running on her own power - which is a coal stoked steam engine.

Wait, Tim doesn't know the metric system? Is American. Was taught the metric system in STEM classes. Would figure Bruce and Dick would both include that while teaching him Navajo.
Sometimes you just make math errors when trying to do conversions in your head. Full disclosure I went to college for engineering but I've talked to guys in machine shops that are like "you MUST use standard becuz MERICA" so that was why i was making the joke lol

In 1918 the Swan Hunter Wigham Richardson Ltd shipbuilders in Wallsend, England, scrapped a U.B. 110 German submarine. The twin-screw U.B. 110 was built by Blohm & Voss, Hamburg. This image shows manhole to periscope wall, valve wheels for flooding and blowing. Hanwheels for periscope gear, air pressure gauges. The UB-110 sunk after attacking a merchant shipping convoy near Hartlepool in July 1918. .. The Liberty L-12 Aircraft Engine, Planes,Automobiles and Records!
The Liberty L-12 engine was a V12 design with a water-cooled configuration, developed during World War I for aviation purposes. In May 1917, a month after the United States had declared war on Germany, a federal task force known as the Aircraft Production Board summoned two top engine designers, Jesse G. Vincent (of the Packard Motor Car Company) and Elbert J. Hall (of the Hall-Scott Motor…

the guttermen are the ultrakill equivalent of tanks in WW1
developed to break the endless stalemate of trench warfare
impervious to any weapons the human soldiers could wield
forced enemy soldiers to chose between dying to the tank or leaving the trenches
while not literally using the blood of the crew for fuel, it could be interpreted as requiring the suffering of the occupant(s) to operate
they were effectively sealed steel boxes with engines and machine guns spewing smoke and fumes everywhere, internal temperatures could reach 50 C (122 F)
ended up being the end of trench warfare, and the beginning of machine warfare
the guttertanks are likely an amalgamation of anti-tank weaponry
developed to counter the guttermen (tanks) by germany
the inscription on their arms, "faustpanzer", may be a reference to the panzerfaust, a german anti-tank weapon
use explosive weapons, which proved to be the major weaknesses of tanks in WW1
being built on the same technology as the guttermen imply that they might be analogous to later tanks as well, which were designed to fight other tanks instead of just being support for infantry

Are you familiar with the book series Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld? It's an alternate history series set in WW1 that features plenty of fascinating bio-engineered creatures.
