The Pains of a Persona, and “We Have to Leave Here Together”

I am about to rant and spoil the shit out of this film, specifically the final scene, so if you haven’t watched it yet, please do. It’s not an easy watch (mostly due to the silence the film needs to drive it’s point home, if you’ve got ADHD bring a fidget), but I think it’s one of the most impactful things I’ve watched in a very long time. Also it’s free on YouTube and made by a single person who is WAY too good at their job. Watch Joel Haver’s other videos too, bozo.

Also, my takeaway from this film will probably be drastically different from a typical person’s, so do not take this as the definitive way to see this film. This is just how I saw it and how it related to me. This post is also a lot more personal than normal, as it’s mostly going into how it relates to me as a person instead of the film itself.

I watched this blind, only knowing (from the comments) that the ending was good, so I decided to give it a try when I had the free time. A film of this nature made me think it would be a bit artsy, so I was expecting some crazy twist ending like for example “she’s just a hallucination” or “she’s actually dead” or something, but instead what I got was something much more... human.

Instead, what you get for 55 minutes is just seeing the pains of a couple trying to work things out. It doesn’t have some grand 3 act structure, or some happy resolution to it all. It’s just the two of them being in each other’s company. The happy, silly bits. The quiet bits. The painful bits. It’s mundane, but that’s exactly what Joel Haver is trying to sell you.

The crescendo of the film is the last 4 minutes, where the guy tries to speak up and tell her something. Then, in what I’m not afraid to say is one of the best executed build ups of a single scene I’ve seen, is a rapid-fire 4 minutes of everything he wanted to say. The scene stopped for no one, and continued to blast every single little thought he might have had. The happiness, the tears, the anger and frustration, it all comes out at once, in a beautiful display of raw unfiltered human emotion.

Then, as soon as it started, it was over, ready to say anything to her. And then, nothing. He pretends it never happened.

To say this film lived or died on how good the pay off was is an understatement, but Joel Haver took it as a challenge and delivered it in spades in one of the most human films I’ve seen.

I personally have struggled a ton with finding my “true self”. It’s much easier to create a mask, and simply be what people want me to be, even if it isn’t true to myself. If I make a persona people can agree with, then life won’t be difficult for me.

So for Joel Haver to show 55 minutes of two people being mundane and acting like their best self to each other, only to show what someone would have said if they weren’t wearing that mask - needless to say it broke me. No sappy film or movie in the world touched so deeply compared to a guy screaming “I Love You!” for 4 minutes straight.

Yet even after flashing back to all the things he’d say, he still doesn’t act on it. This one hurt the most - no matter how much I try to open up, it’s impossible to fully do so. You’d risk everything and everyone’s image of you. Even when I was in a relationship, there were things I couldn’t say. I’d scream and shout on the inside but on the outside I’d just pretend to be content.

Even today, I’ve yet to see someone capture the heart of what it’s like to wear a mask, a persona for others, like this film did. There have been some attempts at it, of course, but most of them end up being shallow. “Just be your true self!” they’d say, not realizing the repercussions of it all. Yet, this tiny little film, filmed in 4:3 with one person playing two characters, just got it.

I really wish I could take this film as a warning, to get myself to open up. Yet, it’s become increasing obvious just how much I can’t just open up to others. Hell, I can’t even open up to myself. No one has the patience for that, after all.

Yet it’s obvious I can’t continue like this. I can’t end up like this person. This person who’s in a failing relationship and won’t say anything out of fear. I’m better than that. Even if it hurts me, and perhaps the others around me, I need to keep going.

All I can do is hope that’s enough. Afterword: This is a lot more of a rant/mumble than other things I’ve posted, although that’s kinda the point of this format anyways. It really was just me talking about how much I love one scene for 10 paragraphs. I just think it connected with me and my issues with myself in a way other films haven’t, and I wanted to share.

Just finished watching Joel Haver’s “We Have to Leave Here Together” and I wanted to share my thoughts.

Highest praise. The end had me super emotional. As a person who struggles with words and expressing emotions I felt Very Seen by both characters in different ways. I love films that communicate that sort of confliction and make it feel just as difficult or even uncomfortable to sit in and witness as it does to have to sort those emotions and try to “figure out” how to interact with people you love. Gah. It hurt very good haha

Filmed beautifully. The acting as both characters was great. If you like bittersweet slow burn love stories that feel Very Real I recommend it for sure.

I know we collectively agree that Hiccup isn’t romantically inclined, and his getting married and having kids didn’t make sense in the epilogue, but consider: Hiccup getting married for political reasons.

It’s a marriage of alliance, which is recognized both by him and his partner, and they enter it without expectations of romantic involvement. Since they’re now married, they live in the same castle, spend time together, and Hiccup finds he really likes his spouse. They’re funny, get along with his friends, and has the same interests and values. They both probably speak multiple languages. She understands why Hiccup is so dedicated to making the Wilderwest better, and holds similar views. She’s a good politician (her job after all, was to be an ambassador). Hiccup likes spending time with them, and the feeling is mutual. They’re not in love, they have their own lives, but they’re dedicated to each other and eventually decide to raise children. They teach their kids how to train hawks and hunt with dragons, riding, history, the Languages, and all the necessary skills of their world. They’re not in love and they’re happy together.

and just in general.. leave people comments. leave them asks about their projects. just go over and gush about their work. i know it sounds embarrassing but writers love nothing more than to hear that someone likes what they are doing. if you find a fic that hasnt been updated in forever, comment on it. it might just be the spark the author needs to continue. while kudos and likes are nice, and just as valuable to some, its definitely in the words the people leave for them that matter the most. im not saying this to put pressure on anyone, its just how it is, and i feel like unless people are writers themselves, and even then sometimes, thats just hard to grasp, especially if the writer is a smaller and less popular one who doesnt get a lot of traffic in the first place

i think thats all. just be nice and considered to everyone, reblog peoples works, this post with others add ons and so forth. and if i find anyone talking shit here or at other writers for something they share, you'll be blocked and im probably taking your kneecaps. be fucking nice. we are all struggling here and we need to stick together

Easter with König

It's another holiday, which means I'm going to make my favorite fictional Austrian go through the holidays as well. First was Fasching, now it's Easter! If I have to celebrate it, then so does König, except he gets to have a better time doing it!

I wouldn’t be surprised if you’d meet his family during Easter. It’s a tradition of his to go to his parents’ home during that time for a visit and a chat, he only sees them maybe twice a year, so he can appreciate having a small get together with them. He normally gets along well with his parents, but he’s lost most of the contact he had with them ever since he hit his mid 20’s, but he does look forward to seeing them. Naturally, he’d take you along for the ride, regardless of whether you actually know German or not. He can play interpreter for you, it’s not a problem for him. But if you know German already? All the better, that way his parents and you can just talk to each other with no problems. He does hope that you’ll get along with them, they did play an important part in his life when he was younger.

König genuinely hopes that you will like the traditional Osterjause*, though. He’s loved Easter for that reason, and for the freshly baked lambs, but mostly for the best Brettljause*. In fact, he’s probably called his mother two weeks before his visit to let her know what kind of meat and sausages to get for him and you as well so that there shall be plenty to go around. If you’re not from around, then you likely don’t know what a “Gsöchts”* or “Schweinsbratn”* is, but he will assure you that it’s something delicious. König could rave on and on about that one farmer’s “Hauswiaschtl”. In fact, if he can, he’d love to go to the farmer’s market on Friday with you just so he can get you something to eat. Not above grabbing some Bauernbrot* and Krenn* either while he’s at it. Mans needs his Krenn when eating his Osterjause. Although it will have been a while since he’s seen everyone, he will introduce you to all the farmers there since he knows a good chunk of them growing up.

Naturally, he’ll be drinking a few beers here and there as well. He’s Austrian, it’s in his blood. Will have you try everything off the plate, from the Nuss* to the low-fat Karree*. Loves having you with him and will actively try to involve you in any conversation there may be so that you get to talk as well. Again, it might be a bit awkward if you don’t know any German, especially since he’s not the most reliable translator, but you’ll get by somehow. His parents have been curious about you for a while now anyway and have been wanting to meet you.

Although he claims to be far too old for that sort of thing, he wouldn’t mind looking for an “Osterkerberl”* with you. It’s a nice tradition that he used to love as a child and he wants you to experience Austrian Easter with him, so he likely asked his mother to hide one for you somewhere around the yard so you can go find it. She won’t give you any clues as to where it could be found. It’s childish, but it’s a lot of fun. In fact, if König were to ask her to prepare a Kerberl* for you, then chances are she prepared one for him as well, for old time’s sake. And then the both of you, two fully grown adults, will run around the yard, looking for the basket. Once you found it, you had to admit it was rather cute, filled with a few hand painted eggs, some colorful chocolate, a baked lamb and some crafted chicks and bunnies. Clearly, his mother put in a lot of thought into what goes into such a small basket. In fact, even the “grass” was made of edible paper, it seemed.

König would feel somewhat stupid, looking for a basket of all things during Easter, but it did remind him of his childhood, so he wouldn’t outwardly complain. Besides, you walking up to him, all happy with your little basket, does something to him. The sight was just too adorable, so he’d likely ask you, the master sleuth, to assist him in his hunt. Once you’ve both found them, you’d return back to his parents’ apartment and continue just chatting while occasionally eating a bit of the Jause*.

Brettljause - Same as Osterjause except it can be eaten at any point during the year.

Gsöchts - Geselchtes - Salted and smoked meat.

Schweinsbratn - Schweinebraten - Specifically prepared roast pork, eaten cold in this context.

Hauswiaschtl - Hauswürstel - A hard sausage.

Bauernbrot - A special type of bread.

Krenn - Horseradish.

Nuss, Karree - Types of meat

Osterkerberl - Osterkörbchen - Easter basket, a basket filled with easter themed food. Sometimes has a gift in it as well, mostly for children.

Kerberl - Körbchen - A basket

Jause - In this context it refers to the Osterjause.

Edelgard still lives rent free in my head and I had a random headcanon about her Fallen version in Heroes. (Because I personally think it’s more interesting if each Edelgard had slightly different personalities and quirks that reflect the lives they lived before being summoned. For example, I see Brave!Edelgard as being the defacto “mom” of the group because she’s technically the oldest.)

But Hegie!Edelgard specifically is the most intriguing to me so here’s my headcanon: she’s the tallest. I like to think that she’s got some semblance of control over her Hegemon form, and has figured out that she can stretch her body just a tiny bit when in her non-beast form that puts her a few inches taller than the other Edelgards. Nothing crazy - she’s not trying to compete with Dimitri or Hubert.

But those few inches are more than enough to make the “normal” Edelgards jealous and Hegie is infuriatingly smug about it
