In the late 1800s, during the Meiji Restoration (1868–1912), Japan was all about modernizing, and one of the ways the government pushed this was through Western-style clothing. Men’s fashion changed first—shaved heads and topknots gave way to European-style cropped hair. By the mid-1880s, 90% of Tokyo men were rocking a fake-European “randomly cropped” look (散切り頭). Geta (wooden clogs) were swapped for regular shoes and even sneakers, while suits, hats, and ties replaced the old hakama and haori.
For Japan’s high society, wearing Western clothes became the new way of showing they were part of the Civilization and Enlightenment movement (bunmei kaika, 文明開化). The rich and powerful wanted to create a clean, modern look for Japan. By 1898, this whole push for Western fashion became known as the haikara (“high collar”) movement.
But not everyone was into it. The bankara movement grew as a response to all this Western influence. Bankara (蛮カラ) means “barbaric,” and those who followed this style rejected the fancy, foreign clothes, going for a more rugged, traditional vibe. It was especially popular with students and intellectuals who didn’t want to give up Japan’s roots.
The Tonbi Coat
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the same time, the tonbi coat showed how Japan was mixing in Western elements but making them their own. Originally based on the Inverness coat from Scotland, the tonbi was modified to fit the kimono with wide armholes and a cape. Over time, it became so tied to Japanese style that no one even thought of it as a Western thing anymore, to the point that Bankara students liked to wear the tonbi coat over their uniforms as symbol of subversion.
So, while the government was pushing for Western fashion, the bankara movement resisted, and the tonbi coat shows how Japan took some foreign ideas and turned them into something uniquely their own.

In honor of my birthday I want to talk about how fucked up purity culture is. Because "I am evil and bad and sexual (derogatory) and must cover up my evil bad sexual body to be less of all these things" is a horrible, terrible thing to think about yourself and others. And women who openly talk about their cycle are demonized and nobody tells you how you should be wearing cotton underwear because that's inherently sexual too, obviously, duh, and nobody is allowed to know how to care for their vagina unless they had a mother who knew because talking about it amongst yourself is also bad. Which you should've known.

A lot of people here in Türkiye got recommended a Podcast channel's video about OnlyFans on YouTube..
I was surprised OF made it's relevancy all the way here but it shows the West's problems are everyone else's problems now. I can see why China wants to censor and separate their internet from the rest of us.

countries will be like “nooooo our birth rate is falling exponentially and it’s effecting our economy” and immigrants will be like “hey can you let us in so we can boost your economy and fill your empty jobs and raise our children here” and inevitably the country is like “the only thing worse than a large scale collapse of our population is letting foreigners live here”

so, a little rant about western christmas capitalism incoming
it so happens that i currently live outside my home country and won't be able to return home for a while. in fact, i've been living abroad hopping between countries for six years alredy
and this christmas season, as all of the last ones, i've been getting really depressed. you know. with all the santa claus jingle bells stuff and giant overdecorated christmas trees all around. it feels like it's supposed to make you happy. like you're supposed to feel some kind of "christmas spirit" and when you don't, you feel like something is wrong with you.
and i want to be happy! i want a proper celebration! why can't i do it, i ask myself?
well that's because... it's not christmas. to me. all of the santa claus christ jingle bells stuff has nothing to do with my feeling of christmas.
i don't actually want to celebrate this western christmas. it's all i see all around, it gets under your skin and into your head.
christmas is the wrong word even. i shouldn't call it christmas because it's not what i called it as a child, or my parents, or grandparents. it's this foreign thing that's been set as a standard for the entire world, slowly erasing and replacing actual tradition with the ruthless force of disingenuous capitalism "christmas".
and it took me until halfway the the celebration to realise this! i've been trying to set the mood with those horrible american christmas pop songs that do n-o-t-h-i-n-g for me.
so then i shut it down. and put on a playlist of traditional songs that i always sang as a child, going door to door on christmas eve and i sung them aloud, because i didn't need to look up the lyrics, because i know them by heart, they're in my blood, and it feels so right and hits deep in that place in my soul. and i taught my baby sister the words, and we swung around the house and the entire family was singing and i felt like all who weren't with us were singing too, and all the generations before us
and it finally felt right. some of those songs are older than the language itself, and i felt connected with my ancestors from a thousand years ago because i know they sang these same songs, a little different, but to the same tune, the same meaning
and that was when christmas actually came for me (and it feels wrong to call it christmas even, because it's different in my head, a different word, different concept)
so yeah. fuck globalization and fuck westernisation and fuck capitalism.
