First book purchase of the year! It WAS on my list of books I wanted, thanks for asking! I love that these are small enough that rereading What Moves the Dead isn't a huge commitment :)

The much-anticipated sequel to “What Moves the Dead” by T. Kingfisher!
I picked this up at Dreamhaven Books when I realized it was released and I had no clue! It is finally in my clutches, so happy reading!

This is what I imagine when I think of Alex Easton from What Moves The Dead and What Feats AT Night
Just the short hair and the uniform is what brings this character to mind.

"If you have ever dealt with the possessions of the dead, you probably know what I mean. You take things away and leave behind emptiness, and everything you remove—every sheet and pillowcase, every lost sock and old razor—erases a little bit of the dead person’s footprint in the world. You picture your own home being carted away, piece by piece, hopefully by loved ones and not by strangers.
I tried to express this to Angus, who snorted and said, “Don’t worry, it’ll take ten men to clear your apartment in Paris, and the next tenants will be finding bottles of livrit stashed in odd corners for years.” Strangely enough, that made me feel better about the whole thing."

On one hand I'd love to see more books staring Alex Easton in the future, on the other hand ka keeps ending each book with a couple new friends and a shiny new facet added to kans PTSD, and it would be a shame to keep subjecting kan to that.

On the topic of phobias, I admitted to a deep fear of moths. But on the topic of nightmares, I disclosed the evil threat of a recently devoured novella. A folklore tale of sleep paralysis.
A moth, fluttering through the key hole after dark. A woman, infinitely heavy, sitting upon your chest. Her black, hollow eyes above you as she steals your breath. You, trapped, within a nightmare, attempting to fight her off before death.
I woke up from a dream I can't remember, cold with sweat. But waiting for me in a text was a video clip. Him on his smoke break, camera towards the ground, a moth under step.
"This is for you," he said.
And I hope it was her. I hope it was my nightmares he crushed.

I’m coining a new subgenre of horror which i call Queer Fungus Horror. The basic requirements to be a part of this subgenre are:
1. A main character is queer (or, I guess any character can be queer, but in the examples I've come across, the main character's been queer)
2. There's a motif of fungus/fungus spores spreading as a metaphor for going insane/evil spreading, etc.
Bonus points if there's also a woman in white who terrorizes people with sleep paralysis and if the setting is an old house
My finds in this subgenre are:
She is a Haunting by Trang Thanh Tran (ignore the 3.4 star average on Goodreads; this is a solid 5/5 stars for me)
What Feasts at Night by T. Kingfisher (if I'm not mistaken, this takes place in the same fictional universe as "Fall of the House of Usher," but this is apparently a sequel and I never read the first book, so I could be mistaken. I'm also a little rusty on my Poe, so I'm not sure if this is a retelling of any of his stories)
Anyway, feel free to add entries into this subgenre! I'm always down to read more about queer characters who are afraid of mushrooms!

✂️ What Feasts at Night by T. Kingfisher
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
After the horrifying events at the Usher manor, Easton and company return back to his home in Gallicia, but find the caretaker dead, the grounds in disarray, and a rumor that a creature from folklore has taken up residence in Easton’s home.
First off, I want to say how happy I am to be reunited with Alex, Angus, and Miss Potter! The first book, What Moves the Dead, had me in a death grip while I was reading it and I was certain T. Kingfisher wouldn’t be able to replicate that in a sequel. I was so so wrong.
T. Kingfisher is a master storyteller and weaves a web of creeping horror, folklorish delight, and a mystery that had me gripped. I love that there’s a sense of humor in the story that doesn’t overpower the eerie feelings of hopelessness. She does a wonderful mixing real things- like PTSD, or “soldier’s heart”- with the fantastical or unsettling. She shows respect to the subject of soldier’s heart while also using it as a narrative theme throughout the book. I loved this sequel almost more than the first book.
T. Kingfisher, please keep writing books!

SPOILERS FOR "WHAT MOVES THE DEAD"!
The follow-up to T. Kingfisher’s bestselling gothic novella, What Moves the Dead.
Retired soldier, Alex Easton, returns in a horrifying new adventure.
After their terrifying ordeal at the Usher manor, Alex Easton feels as if they just survived another war. All they crave is rest, routine, and sunshine, but instead, as a favor to Angus and Miss Potter, they find themself heading to their family hunting lodge, deep in the cold, damp forests of their home country, Gallacia.
In theory, one can find relaxation in even the coldest and dampest of Gallacian autumns, but when Easton arrives, they find the caretaker dead, the lodge in disarray, and the grounds troubled by a strange, uncanny silence. The villagers whisper that a breath-stealing monster from folklore has taken up residence in Easton’s home. Easton knows better than to put too much stock in local superstitions, but they can tell that something is not quite right in their home. . . or in their dreams.

currently working through What Feasts At Night and the only thing that is distracting me from devouring this novel in one sitting is the knowledge that Easton, canonically, fucks.
I am just a weakling who wants to know a LOT MORE about the gentle debauchery that ka had in Paris and I want to know more right now.
