yet another thing I did for school. This time, for a sort of talent showcase thing-- I chose digital art because my classmates chose singing and dancing and that shits tiring lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I made these three this week, but bc the deadline for it is so close, i had to take two fanart I've already done bc making 5 art in 5 days when i have SO many other stuff to do is just impossible.
I even chose lineless art bc it was quicker, but still
🌸 Steal my art and I'll steal y'alls kneecaps <3

i’m autistic and studying to be an engineer, and watching extraordinary attorney woo has made me think about my own internalized ableism.
woo young-woo and i aren’t dissimilar in intelligence, but i mask a lot more than she does. (it’s the reason i wasn’t evaluated & diagnosed until i was 19, even though various teachers suggested to my mom that i was on the spectrum — i’d learned to modify my behavior so my abnormalities weren’t “abnormal enough.” my mom thought it was safe to conclude i had asperger’s but it was something i’d outgrow without intervention.)
just watching her leave the apartment and walk down the street made me anxious, because i’ve internalized not to move like that where people can see me. my internal process went something like this: “i’m very bad at sustaining eye contact, but at least i try” — and then i realized what an asshole i was being.
woo young-woo made me nervous because to succeed in a hyper competitive field like engineering or law, i was taught to change the way i reacted to the world instead of taking the harder path — making the people i surround myself with change to react to me. i didn’t like seeing her because she reflected the parts of me i try to minimize for the comfort of others, in order to be seen as capable.
i haven’t finished the series yet, but i’m glad that “masking = success” isn’t the direction it’s taken so far.

I do hope that one episode will eventually emphasize how much effort Woo Young-Woo has to go to, constantly, just to exist in a nuerotypical world. It's kind of alluded to in a lot of the things she does, but so far the show has focused on representing ableism as it manifests in the world's reactions to her.
For me, the best example so far of what I mean is whenever we see her counting down with her hand before entering a room. She has to force herself to enter every room with other people in it. It is not natural or comfortable. And she's doing things like that all the time, everyday. The intro and the glimpse of her routine in the first episode kind of demonstrate this, too.
But they haven't really (to my understanding) acknowledged how much effort that must take, and how much she has to consciously push herself, sacrificing her comfort and going against her instincts, in order to achieve tasks that the people around her don't even think about. How strong and determined she is for making those choices day after day.
They've shown us often that she's uncomfortable, but not what it's like to be uncomfortable that much of the time. To exist in a world that isn't built for you. I don't think the story would be incomplete without this acknowledgement, but I feel like Woo Young-Woo deserves it. Autistic people, disabled people, deserve it.

This post contains spoilers for The Extraordinary Attorney Woo.
Tumblr media
I recently watched The Extraordinary Attorney Woo, and after a few days I finally figured out what I liked so much about it.
Y’know, besides it being really nice to see a love interest who, despite their ups and downs, is never an asshole.
I mean, I don’t know how autistic people feel about the show. I am sure some like the rep and some hate it for a variety of reasons, and you should listen to what they have to say about it.
But for me, it was exciting to see someone in a show who has restrictive sensory sensitivities that limit what she eats and how she eats it, and — For Once — it is not presented as a character who is picky because they are a spoiled brat or a fussy uptight stick in the mud. This is a character that struggles to eat certain things and it is simply a part of her greater array of character traits.
Tumblr media
Even though I am not autistic, and I do not share many of Young-Woo’s other traits, I can see myself in that character. I, too, simply do not eat certain things (although my palate is broader than hers and very different), and I, too, feel awkward in certain social situations where eating and drinking particular things is expected. And it certainly is not about being spoiled or fussy. What a breath of fresh air.
That scene when she told her dad the ham tasted funny and he said to eat it anyway, and after she left he turned around and found all the ham picked out of her gimbap and left behind in an X on her plate —So relatable.
