Age regressor Woo Young-woo • moodboard
Divider credit
Headcanons below :
° Loves whale coloring books.
° Regresses by herself and doesn't tend to like having a caregiver. If she has one at all, it's her father.
° Whole bookshelf of whale books she reads over and over.
° Still adores the law even when regressed often choosing to watch law related TV shows.
° Always wants her dad to make her Gimbap with the ham she likes.
° Quiet regressor she likes to just sit and do pretty much nothing.
° She does enjoy being in the presence of Geu-ra-mi when regressed.
° Her main way of playing is still lining up objects. Now, though she has whales, she can line up in all sorts of groups.
° Overstimulated very easily when regressed

I started watching Extraordinary Attorney Woo today and oh my god I am in love with all of these characters. I especially adore how within the time between episode 1 and 3 Jung Myeong-seok goes from doubting Young-Woo’s abilities to nearly throwing hands with a prosecutor for discriminating against her in court. I’ve also ended up liking her dynamic with him more than Jun-ho but that’s neither here nor there.

Ways to approach the poll if the character isn’t a royal:
If you think they’d be from a smaller house, go with the Great House that that smaller house is sworn to (ex: House Manderly —> vote Stark)
They don’t have to be a nobleperson, they can be someone working for the house or being ruled by them. Roles could be a sworn-sword, a septa, a butcher, a blacksmith, or even a lowly peasant.
You can consider the region itself. For example, if you feel the character would be from Dorne, pick House Martell.
You can consider the personality of the character. For example, if your character is all about honor, then consider either House Arryn or House Stark.
Last, but not least, be creative with it! For example, there was a comment I read that the character who was the subject of the poll would be pulling a Littlefinger, so they went with either Lannister or Tyrell as that would be that character’s target houses.

This post contains spoilers for The Extraordinary Attorney Woo.
Tumblr media
I recently watched The Extraordinary Attorney Woo, and after a few days I finally figured out what I liked so much about it.
Y’know, besides it being really nice to see a love interest who, despite their ups and downs, is never an asshole.
I mean, I don’t know how autistic people feel about the show. I am sure some like the rep and some hate it for a variety of reasons, and you should listen to what they have to say about it.
But for me, it was exciting to see someone in a show who has restrictive sensory sensitivities that limit what she eats and how she eats it, and — For Once — it is not presented as a character who is picky because they are a spoiled brat or a fussy uptight stick in the mud. This is a character that struggles to eat certain things and it is simply a part of her greater array of character traits.
Tumblr media
Even though I am not autistic, and I do not share many of Young-Woo’s other traits, I can see myself in that character. I, too, simply do not eat certain things (although my palate is broader than hers and very different), and I, too, feel awkward in certain social situations where eating and drinking particular things is expected. And it certainly is not about being spoiled or fussy. What a breath of fresh air.
That scene when she told her dad the ham tasted funny and he said to eat it anyway, and after she left he turned around and found all the ham picked out of her gimbap and left behind in an X on her plate —So relatable.

this parallel is scaring me because if it was done on purpose then I fear there's a possibility that in season 3 we will see a fight between gi-hun and in-ho (like gi-hun and sang-woo in the final round in season 1) where in the end gi-hun refuses to kill in-ho (I doubt gi-hun will outright forgive him, but maybe he will try to tell in-ho to go home to jun-ho, that it doesn’t have to end in death) and when gi-hun tries to offer his hand to help lift in-ho up, in-ho will pull the same stunt sang-woo did and kill himself to maybe save gi-hun or jun-ho. something about "small sacrifice for the greater good"
:(

Okay so as an autistic person, as someone who is pursuing a career in acting and as someone who has watched a good portion of this show, I want to give my two cents.
Important note: I’m talking about Big Bang Theory, Attorney Woo, Dr. Shaun and this one autistic character from a Brazilian novela, as I have not seen the other media OP mentioned. Also, besides the novela, I didn’t really watch these shows all the way through so if I get some things wrong, it’s due to that.
Second note: The episodes I watched of Woo Young Woo were all dubbed in Brazilian Portuguese, which is why I don’t remember most character names. Bringing this up because someone in the replies did mention the show referring to autism as “aspengers” but in the dub, except for the part where Woo calls it out, they always used autism or ASD.
I agreed with pretty much everything you say.
Like from a viewer stand point, I do like the show. Its entertaining, I find some of the characters compelling, and it has some very well written scenes. But I also have lots of issues with the show. I hope you don’t mind me repeating some of the stuff you said and expanding on it from my perspective.
Straight away I want to talk about representation through writing. First of all, if anyone sees these portrayals and relates to them, that is great, I am talking about my personal experience.
So, in most media that I’ve seen that has autistic characters, they almost always feel and act the same. They are always very monotone and fast talkers (and are always verbal btw), and they do things where people from the show clock them as “different”, “weird”, “quirky”. In Woo Young Woo, it’s her pacing a lot (and very loudly, like what the heck is up with those shoes), her moving her fingers a lot or putting her hands to her ears, and her interrupting people and going on rants about whales. Again, I’m not saying these are bad itself, but when this seems to be the only representation you see, it becomes a problem.
I don’t remember if the show mentions what level of supports Woo Young- Woo is, but I’m level of support 1 and I had a late diagnosis, which means I mask a lot. And I rarely see that portrayed or talked about in shows/movies. I never see characters struggling to be their true selves/learning to unmask. I never see characters that get told they “don’t look autistic”. I never see autistic characters who were diagnosed later in life and get existential crisis over it. Characters who observe and copy social behavior and mannerisms to fit in more, or who script interactions. In other words, I don’t see myself represented.
And sure, people will say I shouldn’t be asking for that because my experiences aren’t universal or that if I want it so bad I should write it myself, but honestly, all autistic people should feel seen.
Like, noticed how I said all theses characters that OP mentioned are verbal. I have yet to see representation for non verbal autistics who use other means of communicating. It also seems to be the two extremes: either the autistic character is highly independent, to the point where they have 0 friends, or they are super reliant of someone( and that someone is always “woe is me”). I want someone more in the middle: a person who is mostly independent, but still need help for many different tasks.
Also, because they are all savants, they are highly smart in their field but absolutely terrible with social communication (and I mean, sometimes i even feel insulted by how terrible with society these characters are. Like c’mon, autistic people can struggle a lot with communication and social cues, but these characters are on a whole other level).
And it usually seems like the characters have no life if it doesn’t revolve around that thing (medicine, physics and law). You don’t really see the characters talk about anything else (only Woo, who at least talks about whales) or have any hobbies that don’t relate to their profession.
It’s like the writers take common autistic traits and kick them up to eleven. Exemple: Dr. Shaun having so much rigid thinking he apparently can’t understand what a transgender person is (btw, weird how even though I feel like most of the autistic community seems to be more queer and yet most shows have straight autistics). Or characters being so literal that it gets annoying (like an autistic person not getting a common phrase/expression even thought they likely heard it their entire life).
And while coming back to the savants, I wish writers didn’t feel the need to make every character savant. Listen, your characters can have lots of knowledge on a subject because it’s their special interest, it does not mean you need to make them a savant. Also, I wished we had more artistic autistics.
Anyways, moving on to the acting part. The whole “actors can play anything” is bullshit. Listen, in theory, yes, actors can play people they are not, but there are limits. A white actor shouldn’t be playing an Asian character. A cis actor shouldn’t be playing a trans character. And a non-disabled actor shouldn’t be playing a disabled character. Why? Two main reasons.
1) it’s literally taking away job opportunities from autistic actors (this also goes for the other minorities I mentioned). It’s hard to find work anywhere when you’re autistic (and specially if you are someone who can’t mask) due to ableism. Due to our disability, production will either think we’re incompetent and can’t act properly, or they won’t give accommodations, which creates terrible work environments. So to have a show like Woo Young-Woo, who seems like it was written to try and give a better portrayal of autism to the general public, and they go and just cast a non autistic actress, feels like a big fuck you.
2) Autheticity. Let’s be honest, when you see a film with a gay character being portrayed by a gay actor, it does feel different (and more real) than one being played by a straight actor. Because if you are part of that group you vs. bring your own real life experiences forward, that can help you with your acting (and something even Stanislavski lowkey preached). It’s a lot easier to do research when you are already part of that community, because you know more people and you know which resources are reliable. Yes, non- autistic actors can do lengthy research but it will never be as personal as someone who is actually autistic doing it.
Also, it means you might be forcing actors to do something they don’t feel comfortable doing. Like, many times actors will get these roles because they need the money (and tbf I don’t judge them much. I judge more the casting directors and agents), and so they have to these things that they admit not liking it. Biggest exemple I can give you is Maddie Ziegler, who did the god awful movie that is “Music” and she herself said she didn’t feel comfortable with many things she was asked to do cause it could be harmful to the autistic community.
Sure you can’t force an actor to be honest about being autistic or not, but if, for exemple, you open casting calls for only autistic actors, there’s a higher chance that you will cast an autistic person who fits perfectly in the role. And also, I’d rather take a lower support autistic actor portraying a higher support character than a non autistic actor in general.
Continuing, I want to talk about how the other characters behave around autistic characters. They always seem annoyed at first and have to eventually “learn” to understand their new friend. And yeah this can happen in real life but c’mon, you can have autistic and allistic characters becoming friends like right away, without the whole ableism first. And also the family members of the characters are just… they are always the victim.
Like seriously there were many times where Woo’s dad annoyed me, because he kept talking about how hard raising an autistic child alone is (which sure it is) but it makes it seem like Woo is/was a burden to him. And also these parents never take their children to therapy! Like they complain about how hard it is but you never see the going after resources to better raise their child.
And my problem with that part is that it’s almost like they focus on how hard it is for other people to “handle” autistic people but never say out loud how hard it actually is to be autistic.
And also, the other characters almost feel like they just can’t stand up for Woo. Sure, they’ll comfort her, but when someone is being ableist towards her, they almost never speak up (I only remember the guy with glasses on the court speaking up tbh). Like even Woo’s boyfriend, most times, I’m like just tell people they’re being ableist. It’s like the writers can write the ableism but can’t name it as what it is.
Also about Woo’s boyfriend. The point OP makes about how other people think he’s with her because of charity, I didn’t see that as the problem in itself. Like, in my interpretation, that was put on the show to represent how outside people view these relationships, like “oh he must be doing this because he pities her” but the show that he actually does care for her. My issue was with what I mentioned earlier, the lack of the standing up for/defending Woo/himself/their relationship.
Also one thing that made me even discuss it a bit with my dad was on the second episode and the talks about maturity. When they were essentially saying “you’re not mature because you never cooked your own meal” I was like bullshit. Especially in regards to autistic people, there are things we literally cannot do because we are disabled. Cooking our own food can be one of those. It doesn’t make us less mature, and for that to be said about Woo, a woman who legit does a lot of things by herself, felt very infantilizing.
I do want to point some things I found positive about the show/representation:
Woo talking about the history of “aspenger’s syndrome” and how it is not recognized anymore, and it’s just ASD.
How every autistic person is different.
How even if you pratically the best in your field, people will still look down on you (with Woo being rejected at jobs even thought she graduated with honors and got all the questions in the law exam correctly).
One thing I especifically liked a lot was whenever they mentioned that Woo only pratically ate the same thing and the reason being because that food is the one she can see everything and not be surprised, because that’s legit me.
And I will say, some of the things portrayed in the show did help my father understand me better. Like, many times in the show, Woo will repeat what someone says (echolalia) and my dad legit told me that when he saw it in the show, he finally understood why when I’m driving, for exemple, I’ll repeat the instructions he’s giving.
TLDR: I feel like the show is okay. Like, it has some really good moments, but it also lacks in many other ways. For people who have little to no knowledge on autism or have no autistic people in their life, they might appreciate it better and maybe learn a thing or two.
But it can also be very frustrating for some autistic people, like me, and it is important to bring these points up so that we can see better representation in the future.
Peace out.
Okay.
We need to talk about Extraordinary Attorney Woo / Weird Attorney Woo.
Because I am pissed.
As an autistic person I am so tired of seeing allistic actors play autistic characters. I am tired of seeing infantalized autistic characters who get further infantalized by the fandom going all "they are so cute and innocent". I am tired of the 'genius autistic' trope, be it Sheldon Cooper or Shaun Murphy or now Woo Young-Woo. It just pushes this idea of autistic people only being valuable to society when we are smart or genius and working important jobs like being scientists, surgeons, law folks - saving lives. The concept of an autistic person's (or any person's really) value being attached to what they contribute is ableist and also just really horrible overall. I am not extremely smart as an autistic person. I don't have a special interest like math or science or medicine or law. My special interests are Puppetry, Filmmaking and Costuming. I also am not nessicarily the "cute" kind of autistic - my stimming is chaotic, I make weird pterodactyl noises, I will talk at 10 kmH speed about the history of Kevin Clash or Jim Henson or Dave Goelz or the Augsburger Puppenkiste or-or-or.
Of course I am not saying that autism cannot look like Attorney Woo - it absolutely can. It is called the Autism Spectrum for a reason. My issue is less with how realistic this character is than with how the show approaches autism as a whole.
Personally I don't want to see allistic actors play us. I don't want to see parents of autistic characters complain on screen how hard it is to deal with an autistic child. I don't want to see characters on sceen assume that whwn an allistic guy hangs out with an autistic woman that he is volunteering. I don't want to see 'genius autistics' or infantalized autistics. I especially don't want to see a fanbase both push the infantalization of autistic characters further and at the same time make fun of their traits and quirks.
I just - is it so hard to make a show about us that actually involves us? So far the only good canon autism rep in shows that I have seen is "Please like me" and "Everything is gonna be okay".
There must be more.
EDIT: I would like to add the new "Heartbreak High" to the list of well-done autism representation
