It was Earth Kingdom ships that drove the metal one onto the reefs, so when the little thing came crawling up through the marsh spitting and hissing and dressed in red, they knew it weren’t no earthbender. No matter how much mud it had tripped in, trying to find where the ground stopped sucking at its feet.

“Wow-ee,” said Old Earl, “that sure is one way of keepin’ off the ‘squito-chiggers.”

And they all watched from Big Earl’s porch, sitting or rocking, as them bugs came for the all-you-can-eat and ended up on the bar-b-que.

“Sure is some weird bending,” said Little Earl, who was taller than Big Earl, but when they'd been twelve and they’d wrestled for the title it hadn't been Little Earl who’d won.

The little thing looked maybe twelve, too. And he was little little. But he had that same look like he was going to shove someone’s face in the mud until they said otherwise, as he stood there all panting and dripping and just realizing they’d been watching him this whole time.

“It’s firebending,” the one-kid mud-wrestler said, as bugs kept pop-snapping into flames around him.

Old Earl cupped a hand over his ear, like he couldn’t hear. And he kept doing it, while the kid got louder and louder about that bending of his, but quieter and quieter about looking at them like they were his next bugs.

“Oh, firebending,” Old Earl said, nodding like he’d only just got it, when the kid had stomped straight up to his chair. “Right, right, Old Jane’s got fire-water-bending, too. Why don’t you take him to her, boys.”

“It’s not-- ugh,” shouted the kid, but maybe he only had the one volume. Certainly only had the one volume for stomping, even though stomping was what got a fellow’s shoes shoved down so deep in the mud they’d be seeing them again as mole-shrimp hats. Not that the kid had shoes. Neither did Earl, Earl, or Earl. ‘Cept for Fancy Earl, but he’d gone off to Ba-Singing-Se, to be fancy.

Anyway, Old Jane was the best at turning anything and everything into fire water, which was the kind of thing a fellow called his or her liquor when they wanted fancy folk to keep right on walking. Was really good for making shouty little firebrands take their naps, too, which let Old Jane get her glowing mitts all over that fresh burn of his. And the love-bites from the shark-wrasses that had probably been half the reason the kid had come a-shore all a-shouting in the first place.

“Nope,” diagnosed Old Jane, when the kid woke back up. “That’s just how he talks. Mother was a screamer-bird, I’d say.”

“You take that back about my mother,” screamed their screamer-bird, who had pretty good hearing for someone who’s ear had lost the same fight as his eye. Anyway, Old Jane had done the best she could about both, and nothing was on fire that shouldn’t be, and she had that extra quilt she’d been working on that needed a body under it

And the waves and the shark-wrasses had all the rest of the kid’s crew

So sure enough they set their little screamer-bird up with a nest and let him cry loud as he wanted.

Anyway, if there was one thing Earl Earl Earl and Jane knew, it was how to make a joke so good the other person didn’t even know it were a joke.

“Firebending,” their little fledgling shouted, and waved his arms around, like all that fire pointed at no one was going to get them startled off.

“A-yep,” nodded Old Earl. “That there is some fire-water-bending. Just like Old Jane.”

Old Jane wasn’t the kind of gal who showed off, but she wasn’t the kind who missed no cue, either. She swirled a lick o’ liquor out of her latest barrel and twirled it ‘round and straight into her mouth, and when she spit it out, it looked so much like the little bird’s breath-o’-fire that he didn’t even notice the spark rocks she kept on her fingers as jewelry. No one did, ‘til they’d seen the trick a few times.

The kid’s mouth hung open so low and so long, a moth-tick flew in. That was some kind of life lesson, that was. The swamp was good at sending those.

The Earth Kingdom sent troops a-stompin’ through, losing boots and scaring catigators out of their sunning spots left and right, askin’ all rumbly about those fires they’d spotted, and if anyone from that shipwreck had made it on shore, and talkin’ about how there’d be money in it for them if they made that last answer a “yes,” sounding like Fancy Earl and all his talk about commerce and living standards.

“Got a few parts of them ship people in the lagoon,” Big Earl said. “Probably still floatin’ if you want ‘em. But we better bring the shrimp-minnow nets, ‘cuase they’ll just slosh on through the turtle-sturgeon ones.”

“...No thank you,” the head stomper said, like sayin’ polite words made a fellow a polite man. He’d tracked those boots of his right up onto their porch without so much as a scuff on their mud rug. Even the kid had used the mud rug. “And the fire?”

“Oh,” said Little Earl, with a grin, “that was Old Jane.”

And she did her trick again, only less tricky, so they could see the spark rocks real good. “You boys want some fire water?” she offered. “It ain’t blinded no one who wasn’t already headed that way.”

They didn’t want any, which was grand, ‘cause she hadn’t really been offering.

When the last of them had gone stomping off back to the kind of land that let people stomp it, it took them two whole hours to lure out the catigators from under the porch. And their little screamer bird, too.

“...Why didn’t you turn me in?”

“What?” asked Old Earl, cupping his ear.

“Why—”

“What?”

“—didn’t—”

“WHAT?”

“—you—”

“Speak up, boy,” Old Earl said. “I never heard such a quiet child.”

And boy, did that set their bird back to singing.

broken promises, pt 2

never thought i'd see aang the air nomad used in service of a segregationist argument. especially after having traveled the world, met and fallen in love with a member of the water tribe in the TV series.

the air nomads' temples and the earth kingdom's walls didn't protect them from genocidal fire nation hubris, and that separation wasn't responsible for their prior harmony. and aang is never shown to believe this until this comic series (and then it's never brought up again).

if he'd learned 'racial/ethnic purity' from the monks who raised him, his attraction to katara would have been... so much more complicated. it might have reeked of guilt, and the scent of 'forbidden fruit'; of idealization and devaluation and 'but you're different/one of the good ones'. aang was already wrestling with the extinction of his people and heritage. but not, i note, with whether his feelings for katara the water tribe girl put his air nomad cultural ties at risk.

aang can be self-centered and inconsiderate on occasion in-canon, but he's 12. in the promise katara points out that they couldn't be together if international harmony required antimiscegenation: only then does he relent. why would yang make 13- or 14-year-old aang this ignorant given the breadth of his cultural knowledge? this is practically an OOC hate crime.

I got tagged for a character name origins tag, but I did that very recently, and the post also mentioned talking about the characters origins, which I’ll gladly yap about!

The Artist

Gotta be honest, it feels odd that Ive BARELY talked about the artist here considering how important they are to How Our World Ended. The Artist is a God who can create universes, and observes them

The artist is a literal outline of a person, with a white line covering their eyes. They exist within a black void, as a result of destroying their own universe. The origin for this character is odd, and many years old, but I’ll try to get a good timeline.

Initially, they were just a character for me to project negative thoughts onto. Then, the idea of them being a creator of universes came into my mind. They were first put into a story during a OLD assignment which I unfortunately do not have access to anymore. While it was bad, it solidified the character in my mind. And they always stayed in the back of my mind, untill I came up with How Our World Ended. And considering how important they are to the ending, and hell, the universe of Souls Collide, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about them ( random note, but I feel like the watcher from What If was a big inspiration of the concept )

RES

Ugh, so this one is a littttle embarrassing. A lot of my older ideas have evolved a lot, and that includes the early stages where they were inspired by some…. Odd stuff ( you don’t wanna know how souls collide itself started )

Anyways, if I remember right, I always liked the idea of doing a more medieval fantasy story. Souls Collide takes place in current times, so that line of thought was always an interesting thought experiment. Anyways, in 2021 I was watching the game awards because I had nothing better to do. I was kinda zoning out, untill the live performance of the song enemy started playing. And as it played, the premise of How our World Ended, or at least a rough outline, hit me. And as time went on, more music inspired more about the story. Hells coming with me by Poor Man’s Poison gave me an idea for a second half of the story that was, admittedly, terrible. But the ending, that was cool, and it stayed. That song also gave me the rough outline of what I wanted Res to be. A revenge fueled fire soul was how he initially was gonna be. But as time went on, a lot changed. I changed him to be an ice soul, as the protagonist of souls collide is already a fire soul, and I didn’t want to overlap that. Then, Res became more fueled by grief. Now, Res is cold and calculated. He works as a vigilante of sorts, and is far more caring once he gets to know someone.

Oof- that was long, I’ll do a quick lighting round of origins that are WAY shorter.

Salazar

Two big inspos for this guy. Firstly, I always wanted to do something similar to the organization 13 from kingdom hearts. Salazar, and his past in the council of fate, was initially gonna fill that role. Over time, the council shrunk and that role more fell to the gods. Then, for his explicit personality, it was heavily inspired by moon waltz by cojum dip. Something about it just fit the guy, and me misinterpreting the wrestling mask of the album cover as a masquerade mask 100% shaped both his chilling personality and his design

Nelios

Okay I think this one is just funny. So, I didn’t plan this book well. At all. I kinda just went “ fuck it “ and let it happen. That’s why the first draft is VERY rough atm. Anyways, Nelios wasn’t originally in the story at all. I was just gonna name drop him, and maybe give him a scene or two, but when I wrote a full chapter of him, I loved him so much, he became VITAL to the story. His personality came from a mix of “ how can I make an arrogant asshole likable? “ and “ how can one make this guy a fun ass character to write “

I'm sure someone has already done this, but I wanted to try my hand at interpreting the American Sign Language in the newest season of The Dragon Prince! Please note that I am not Deaf and only have a bachelor's in the language, so this is likely to be rough and if there are mistakes PLEASE let me know!! the most repeated metaphor for israel's exile in the nevi'im (prophets) in the tanakh is that of an adulterous woman punished by her husband. basic logic: g-d promised us in exodus that we would live well in the land of israel and be protected by It (g-d), but we were not. our enemies said this showed g-d the god of israel was unable to protect us, but we could not abide this, and counter-claimed that g-d was punishing us for our unfaithfulness and that It had sent the nations to destroy us, and It had the power reestablish us when we had repented. the adultery metaphor is obviously tuned to the psychology of its times and audience, but more foundational and less criticized is the assumption g-d can make such promises, that it's preferable that It determines the actions of third parties in the world, that if It can't, It's worse than worthless, a used tissue, because the only people here who should have free will and the power to exercise it are the jews and g-d.

all this entity's choices and preferences are made into a morally-charged one that is a referendum on the moral valence and bestows moral judgment to anyone or anything she likes/doesn’t like or does/doesn’t do. and also those interior feelings, if shown, are open to making her limitlessly blamed for the spurned person’s resulting action. or mysteriously impersonally Morally Right (after those preferences, like liking meat more than grain, are forcibly interpreted as being solely a moral pronouncement that invites and justifies limitless violence and blame)(19). both timelessly nonlinearly unchangingly culpable at each point in a linear sequence of events regardless of what order one shuffles it in, and incapable of having curiosity or ignorances or confusions that make up linear accumulations of knowledge or opinions or back-and-forths that change her mind over time, or that are incomplete without the preexisting elements of the narrative or which have to take place in the context of a dynamic dialogue/tug of war to make sense.

so i think in a similar way to that, but in a way that doesn't...pattern-match....without the pronounflip/husband-wife adultery and shaming flip......people will not think of the full picture of what else entails if one accepts a premise......no allowing for g-d being dumb or irrational or impulsive, or ignorant at earlier periods of time of what consequences will occur later. no allowing It to have the capacity to change Its mind, and therefore no allowing It to make it up to us once the error in thinking or acting has been understood and regretted. no dynamic interiority allowed in It being capricious and poorly-moral or passion-ruled or not having considered what is evil or what isn't, or what is a big deal to humans and what isn't, not omniscient enough to already know this prior to the chance to learn it by observing humans. no considering such a being to be acquiring contradictory ideas over time and It trying to figure out which one should rule in any given moment, struggling with warring impulses and giving into one at one time and another at another time, being stubborn bc It is a person with ideas that contradict too, reaching out in a curiosity or a confusion, putting on an act to try to court and impress and arouse desire in It's mate Israel. eg, people ignoring the implication that a specific method (flood, languages) implies either a limited ability or a specific desire or a specific curiosity, or both (18) (why multiple languages specifically??? why not something way less surmountable if insurmountability was desired? or if timeless omnipotence was available??).

let alone, in some cases the idea of g-d simply being helpless, overcome, raped and despoiled, not omnipotent enough to achieve -- even if It does know what It wishes It could do -- a method that would fix things, stop things.

but apparently a fearsome but vulnerable and morally-heterogenous and linearly evolving/accumulating/learning god with enough raw bursting power do act immorally sometimes, but without omnipotence, is unpalatable. so……idk, the time-collapse of god treatments that mirrors that of misogyny that mirrors that of antisemitism -- no matter what you do or don't, or can or can't, or know or don't know, or think or can't think, it's your fault -- haunts to an un-unseeable extent.

this is all torah/tanakh and jewish thought specific(20), but the bigger issue for me that i have a hard time unseeing after seeing it was like….the classic conception of omnipotence and omniscience is a thought-termination (either as timeless will-always-have-been-morally-right termination, or as infinitely-blamable, uniquely worthy of punishment, betraying anthy-style scapegoat termination, which are just two different sides of the coin).

there is no cognitively nondissonant way to say 'if g-d exists, i am deciding It is shaped in such a way so as to be to blame for everything/should Be Killed/is actively working against our Liberation/must be a concept that is inherently keeping life from snapping back into a happy and suffering-free equilibrium', because if you (like me) are open to the idea of g-d being nonexistent, there is only One excuse for not also being open to the idea of g-d being a non-omnipotent, non-omniscient, dynamic, learning, growing entity, a person who is then subject to whatever limitations a person would have, and also is an-other person whose inner heart, like any other person's you cannot narrow down to the dichotomy of either being the guy you made up in your head, or a deliberate traitor to that guy. It's the same excuse for why a person or group such as the Jews are The Enemy Of All Humanity Who Must Be Killed Or At Least Blamed: laying down one's own interiority as a sentient being, to invent a person who exists to be limitlessly blameable in situations where no one else would be. if you (like me) don't completely believe g-d exists, i suppose we can't hurt It, but i know what it sounds like and who it impacts. i am much more stung about g-d lying to us -- by claiming we could only be destroyed by Them/our own transgressions. ie., lying by claiming other groups of humans totally didn't have the power to exile and genocide us irrespective of our own behavior -- than by the crime of 'not being omnipotent.' lol. but ofc even this too assumes They did actually lie to us at all, and that a more fitting interpretation of the text (let alone reality) isn't just a folie a deux of wishful thinking on one or both of our parts in this lovers affair.(21)

To be honest all my charts sucked because they didn’t include Fist of the North Star (boring), Baki (couldn’t be bothered), Slam Dunk (don’t like basketball, and I was way too into Prince of Tennis instead, which is such a contrived series), Rurouni Kenshin (didn’t want to read it), or One Piece (I’ve read a few hundred chapters but then I lost steam, because it doesn’t go anywhere). I also didn’t include Kingdom because like, it’s a lot to get into, and I didn’t want to read that other boxing manga because I don’t care for boxing, so my charts were missing a lot of pretty important things, but like, it’s not my fault so much stuff is about sports (boring). I also never read Golgo 13 or Detective Conan because I did not want to. But I really should’ve if my charts were going to be any good. Instead I was like, I know, I should watch 500 episodes of Gintama. That’s a good plan. It’s kind of a pity AoT will probably inspire like, I guess a lot of the successful manga that’s going to come out in the next decade, because I hated AoT and thought it was so boring. I also don’t like Fullmetal Alchemist. So I refused to include them on my charts. I guess I would say the main strength of my charts was that I knew exactly what was missing from it but I still refused to engage out of disinterest. Actually, I also didn’t like Bleach, which is even worse. That’s a massive flaw in this plan. Like, I’ve seen parts of Bleach, but I couldn’t get into it! Life’s hard when you’re like, 15, and your main hobby isn’t even anime, it’s being an anime historian but you’re not a very good historian because you fundamentally cannot care about a 1980s series about high school wrestling.

POWER ENCOUNTERS

John 14:18,20 - "I will not leave you alone;  I will come back to you.  When that day comes, you will know that I am in my Father, and that you are in me, just as I am in you."

When we talk about power encounters as a means of reaching people with God's love, many different ideas may run through our heads. Most people don't see themselves as being equipped to have power encounters and may leave this to the more highly gifted.   There are, however, several ways that most any spirit-filled Christian can engage in a positive power encounter:

THE POWER OF PRESENCE

Power encounters occur when Jesus' followers  disciple new believers into their Christ identity, their right standing with God, and walking in the Spirit. This shows them how to host God’s presence in their every day lives.

In 1 John 1:5, John writes that the message he heard from Jesus and now declares is, "God is Light."  Light speaks of the power, truth, and life of God's nature.  In John 8:12, Jesus states that He is the Light of the world, and the verse finishes by saying that when we follow Him, we will become the light as well. God's presence in us is like a light that shines and distinguishes us from those who do not have this light. We are told to "live as children of light"

(Ephesians 5:8). The greater the light and presence of God we release, the more the darkness will be overcome around us through changing the way people think about God and their calling in Christ.

We find that when we intentionally allow the presence of the Holy Spirit to be released through us to touch others, people are drawn and they experience a hunger to know more about Jesus.

THE POWER OF JESUS' NAME

Most Christians are familiar with the fact that Jesus delegated His authority to us and gave us the power of His name. Take note in the following verses to the things that we have been given power to do in the name of Jesus: Matthew 10:7-8, Mark 16:17-18, Luke 9:1-2, and John 14:11-13.

Simply utilizing our God-given dominion and authority can dispel darkness and bring the Kingdom of God to earth.

THE POWER OF LOVE

The Bible makes it clear that our enemies are in the spiritual realm and are not the people we are trying to reach -- Ephesians 6:12 - "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places."

When we take God's light into spiritually dark places, it is best that we don't pray against the people trapped in darkness, such as psychics.  Instead, ask God to bless them and reveal His glory and light to each individual.

1 John 4:4 - "..because greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world."

As we mature, we understand our Christ identity and the authority God has given us to do the greater works Jesus spoke about. which includes discipling others into their Christ identity, their right standing with God, and walking in the spirit.

PRAYING WITH ALL KINDS OF PRAYER 2

"PRAYING always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints." Ephesians 6:18 (NKJV)

We have been able to expatiate four types of prayers in the first part of this teaching, and the others are shared here.

VI. United prayer (Acts 4:24).

There is power in the united prayer. United Prayer releases the glory of God. When believers unitedly pray on a particular thing, and God promises to honour the prayer.

Jesus said, where those who are His unitedly gather up to call on Him, He would be in their midst (Matthew 18:20).

The early church experienced the unusual move of God's power in their midst, through the united prayers (Acts 4:23-31).

VII. Warfare Prayer (Ephesians 6:11-13; 2 Corinthians 10:3-6).

Believers wrestle not with flesh and blood. In other words, the Believers are not being challenged or opposed mainly by humans, but the devil and his demons.

God has given the believers, Authority in Christ Jesus to tread upon serpents, and scorpions and all the powers of the enemy, the devil (Luke 10:19).

In this type of prayer, you are not warring or battling with God, but the devil. You stand in the Word of God, to undo the works of the devil; frustrate his plans and nullify whatever evil he may have orchestrated or planned to be or make happen.

You press home through the Word of God the victory Christ Jesus has given us, the believers, through His death and resurrection (1 John 5:4).

VIII. Prayer of Agreement (Mathew 18:19).

If two believers would agree on a particular thing, It would be established in heaven. In other words, the thing which they have requested in their prayers, in agreement, would be given or granted to them.

There is power in agreement prayer. Husband and wife can agree in prayer on whatever thing. You can agree with your pastor, a prayer partner, or any believer who is of a like mind.

This prayer is powerful and effective, It can be used to take care of a number of problems that might be confronting the people of God; especially between two partners—husband and wife or whoever.

IX. Prayer of Petitions (Acts 4:24-29).

Through this kind of prayer, you take God by His Word. You come to Him with His Word, petitioning Him to do a specific thing, based on what He said in His Word, the Bible.

The Bible says God is not a Man, a human, who should lie (Numbers 23:19), thus, He would do something on whatever you have brought before Him. He would definitely not deny His Word, He would honour it.

One of the things that should be considered in using this type of prayer is, whatever you are asking should be in line with His plans for your life. You cannot just pick a passage of the Bible and be claiming it. Telling God He should do it for you, when what you are asking for is not in agreement with His plans for your life. Or you are probably not ripe or mature enough to handle what you are asking for. With the terms and conditions said, and some other reasons, you may quite all right petitioned God through His Word and still not receive whatever you had requested for.

X. Prayer in the language of the Spirit (1 Corinthians 14:2,14).

The Bible says, When you pray in tongues, you are communicating with God, and you are speaking mysteries (1 Corinthians 14:2).

The praying in tongues is powerful, it put the kingdom of darkness in disarray.

When you pray in tongues, you energized your spirit, the inward Man (Jude 20).

Praying in tongues, in the language of the Spirit, increases the Anointing of God on your life.

When you engaged in this prayer often, your mind is quietened, and is more sensitive to receive whatever the Holy Spirit might be passing across as a message through your spirit, the inward Man, to the mind.

Believers are admonished to pray always in the spirit with all prayer, and be watchful with perseverance and supplication (Ephesians 6:18).

Endeavour to pray more in the SPIRIT. You can even do it while you are busy doing other things, If what you are doing does not require full engagement of your mind.

There are different types of prayers, and each prayer has its rules. You would need to pray and use the right kind of prayer, based on the need at hand. You have to apply the right kind of prayer, according to each particular need.

You will not pray amiss in Jesus' name.

Should there be any ailment in your body, receive your healing now in Jesus' name.

The hold of sicknesses is completely broken and uprooted in your life in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Peace!

Ask that He will write your name in the Book of Life (Philippians 4:3; Revelation 3:8).
