Are there any places in Fairville that Norman likes to hang around? What do people think of him before he's arrested? What do they think of him after?
This ask is from… seven years ago. But I’m gonna answer it anyways!
Before his mother met Joe Considine, Norman spent most of his time either at school or the library. He’s always loved to read and likes to learn just for the sake of learning. The librarians probably knew him by name and set aside books that they thought he would enjoy – almost always nonfiction, often history or philosophy. Norma didn’t mind so long as he was home before dark. Given that Fairvale is about 15 miles away from his house, he would have had to rely on the bus system, and if you’ve ever lived in a small, conservative town, you know how shitty public transportation is there. That alone made it nigh impossible to spend too long in Fairvale proper.
He also spent a lot of time at church. And hated it.
When Norma met Joe, she put her heart and soul into building and running that motel. This meant Norman spent less time at school and church and more time helping her run the place, usually just by doing odd little chores here and there. By the time the highway moved, driving all of the traffic away from the motel and leaving the business barren, Norman had already faded from most public consciousness.
A few people here and there still knew him. Fairvale is an extremely small town where everybody knows everybody else’s business. Grocers, plumbers, electricians thought of Norman fondly. When news broke that Norma and her boyfriend had died, Norman actually lived with Al Chambers and his wife for a short time; he was only 15 and couldn’t live independently just yet, especially not after such a horrific, tragic event. They adored him and treated him as well as they would their own child.
Norman began to run the motel entirely on his own. No one whispered about all of the missing girls, because they weren’t Fairvale natives; they were wayward girls who became lost along the highways, took a wrong turn, and had the misfortune to wind up in the lobby of the Bates Motel. No one in Fairvale knew them and so nobody thought to question what Norman might be doing up there all alone. Someone in town might think about him briefly. The librarian, maybe, when seeing a book on the history of the Incas; the plumber when he has a client offering him bottled water after a difficult job; a retired schoolteacher recalling a student with anxious eyes and a stutter whose name she can’t quite place.
Or they think about him when someone mentions that awful thing that happened five, eight, ten years ago. A murder-suicide in Fairvale? Unheard of. That poor boy, living like a hermit out in the middle of nowhere.
In 1959, Marion Crane goes missing. $40,000 is swallowed up by the swamp. Norman Bates is caught red-handed and charged with the murder of not just Marion, but six other people. The swamp behind the house is dragged, cars pulled from the muck. There’s more than just the seven. Girls from Las Vegas, Colorado, Arizona, San Diego. All blonde. All eerily similar looking.
Say, wasn’t Norma Bates a blonde? Surely you don’t think—?
People in Fairvale try not to talk about it, or when they do, it’s in hushed whispers behind gossipy hands. Suddenly everyone remembers Norman Bates. He bought groceries in town two weeks before he was arrested, didn’t he? They remember him as a little boy they knew from school. As the motel manager who helped their elderly grandmother carry her luggage to cabin seven. That nice man who…
Did all of those horrible things. Those poor girls. And the way he was caught in his mother’s clothing – and he kept Norma’s body up there, too, did you hear? The papers say he tried to taxidermy her. Kept her corpse in the bed, had conversations with it. They drive past the sign for the Bates Motel and their mind immediately goes to the headlines. They know exactly where they were when they heard the news. Seven Bodies Found at Roadside Motel. Later: Motel Killer Dubbed Fairvale Psycho, Found Unfit to Stand Trial.
Books are published about the case and its impact on small, sleepy Fairvale. The murders are described in horrific, graphic detail. TV specials play on late night cable that do the same, now with shots of the abandoned motel sign, the windows of the establishment boarded up.
Tourists purposely make a stop to see where it all happened. Finally the motel has people clambering to make a reservation, ten months after its doors shut to the public.
Everything becomes about the murders. For a time.
Eventually, interest fades, the way interest fades with everything. Norman soon is mentioned only as a passing factoid, mentioned alongside names like Ed Kemper or Henry Lee Lucas, notable only to those with the morbid curiosity to go digging.

hi there! i don't know if your policy of asking what your inspirations were for stories still applies, but if possible, would you be willing to share for theme from an imaginary western and subterranean homesick blues? it's just. those two are fabulous
yes, and thank you for asking! always happy to answer questions like this.
for subterranean homesick blues... a few years ago i watched a hulu documentary series about california's "emerald triangle" called sasquatch which was in large part about the violence and lawlessness of the marijuana industry in that area... i also have an acquaintance who was working in the emerald triangle and was involved in a serious crime. for modern AUs of anything in a medieval/courtly setting my brain goes instantly to drugs i guess... it's kind of the easiest metaphor for the feudal setting. and i felt like it suited the young characters. the whole universe of the story started with a kind of jon and satin AU about being saved from apparent death with naloxone. that might be chapter 2 if i can get there.
for theme from an imaginary western. this was truly just processing for me in the wake of the leak of a draft of the dobbs v. jackson women's health organization supreme court decision that overturned roe v. wade and allowed states to ban abortion. i know this story is insane. i think we can have a debate about whether a/b/o stories more broadly are psychologically about revenge or about displacing the politicized things about your own body onto a body that a sexist society views as apolitical. i think it's a little bit of both (for me at least). BUT... putting the politicized things about your body onto an apolitical body makes that body a political body... that was what i was trying to analyze in this story. basically just extending the hyper-patriarchal society to its logical endpoint where people who can get pregnant are assumed to be criminal at all times. (there's a sneaky detail about how rye has never been allowed to drink alcohol or even coffee.) in part because the story had to take place in a dustbowl in texas there is sort of a parallel thread about the exploitation and exhaustion of land via industrial agriculture. i think that's a neat but extremely scary metaphor. overall, people who provide abortions or help people access abortions and people who are seizing their right to make their own reproductive choices in places where it is illegal and criminalized are the bravest people in the world and i wanted to write a story about them as a sort of proof that we can all be brave even and especially when we are very scared, all it takes is believing that we can, believing what we are doing is right, and being willing to act on our love and respect for each other...

My Commentary That No-One Asked For
I am not a true crime fan . However, after hearing the Sherri Papini story I had so much to say. So here is my commentary that literally no-one asked for. Also my opinion is solely based on the Hulu documentary about this story so yeah:
After hearing the entire Sherri Papini story I feel like she was truly sick in the head.
I never believed she was kidnapped for a second. However, I did think at first that her husband might have had something to do with her disappearance based solely on the fact that I didn't believe any woman who was referred to as a "supermom" by her friends and family would ever randomly leave their children for any reason at all.
Sherri did though. She woke up one morning and decided today is the day I get kidnapped. She faked her kidnapping for 22 days. Her friends and family spent that time searching for her and the media picked up the story as well. So now the entire world was looking and praying for her safe return. Whole time, she was cooped up in her ex-boyfriend/ex-fiance's (depends on who you ask) house for 22 days beating and starving herself until Thanksgiving morning when she finally missed her kids and decided it was time to return home.
You're probably wondering what the ex had to do with all this. Come to find out she was lying and manipulating him and basically everyone around her into thinking she was a victim. Victim of what you ask? Well, every terrible thing you can think of. A victim of several forms of abuse throughout her entire lifetime. Now, how much of that is true no one really knows. Obviously this person is a compulsive liar and a master manipulator so a grain of salt is all her statements are worth. After she was "found" she continued to lie. When I say lie I mean LIE.
She told everyone she was kidnapped by two hispanic ladies
(side note: she gave the FBI sketch artist the most generic description of an older and younger hispanic woman causing real fear and repercussions in the hispanic community at that time. Many hispanic women altered their lives in order to not be seen as a suspect in this case. Truly heart breaking.)
and was drugged, beaten, and chained to a closet in a small room where the window was boarded up. She goes on to say she was made to use the restroom in a small trashcan filled with kitty litter, and was only allowed to shower twice in 22 days (I don't know what kidnapper lets you shower but I digress). These details are horrible and her family and friends morned her old self knowing that the "new Sherri"was beyond traumatized and for a lack of better words completely fucked up by this experience. As anyone would be. Her story changed and some details just didn't add up.
Some years later they found out she was indeed lying and had obviously read too many books and watched too many movies. But the question remained.. Why did she do all of this?
Well, in my opinion I believe she did all this to keep up the "damsel in distress" persona she had created for herself. I also think she just couldn't stop lying. She loved to tell stories. She got off on making her life seem more dramatic than it truly was. She is addicted to attention. She needs it.
I do feel bad for the husband though because I really thought it was him. Ironically though he ended up being a victim in the end.
In conclusion, Sherri Panini wanted attention. That much is clear and in the end she got just that. But you know what they say
Don't fake your own kidnapping because you will go to prison and also who does that? Like seriously just like start a podcast or something I don't know.
Peace

STOP WATCHING THE OFFICE:   other things to watch this summer
Tumblr media
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE ZIE OFFICE!! But as much as it pains me to say, the office isn’t a personality trait, so I’ve decided to make a list (e.g. Buzzfeed lists) of my top 16 recommendations for TV and podcasts to watch and listen to—since we all need to stop being basic bitches and FOCUS!
I hope you listen to me when I say these shows are amazing and actually watch them if you have the time. I'm doing this because I care about you and your TV preferences.
I'll break it up by streaming service, starting with Netflix then Hulu, YouTube, then Podcasts last.
*I apologize in advance for the lousy grammar and lack of editing, but also not really sorry bout it.
-----------------------------------------
On NETFLIX:
1. Arrested Development
Number of Seasons: 5
Number of Episodes: 91
Hours to Binge: 35
Tumblr media
Okay, number one on my list is Arrested development. A lot of people I talk to, especially in my age range, don’t know what the fuck I’m talking about, but this show is GENIUS... on G*D. I’ve watched it around four times now, and each time it gets better and better. I read somewhere that it was created as a satire of Bush-era incompetence and idiotic hanky-panky during the Iraq war. But at its heart, the show’s about a rich family with four adult children—who are all goofy and quirky. Their dad get’s thrown in jail for doing business with terrorists or something like that and Micheal Bluth (Jason Bateman) has to get them out of weird ass situations.
youtube
Above is one of my favorite scenes  (Best clip I could find on youtube!!).
Tumblr media
This show has a LOT of jokes and long running bits that you kind of have to pay attention to to get the storyline. It’s hella META, and at times, can be really weird (see George Micheal Bluth and Maeby Fünke’s little Les Cousins Dangereux). In conclusion, however, Jason Bateman is hot, Micheal Cera is hot, and Tony Hale is ~super~ hot.
Tumblr media
P.S. a lot of memes come from this show that you would know but don’t know that it’s from this show.
Tumblr media
2. The Haunting of Hill House
Number of Seasons: 1
Number of Episodes: 10
Hours to binge: 9
youtube
Scary as f*ck! Do not watch yourself or u will die. I warned you.
I'm not going to spoil it too much, but it's about a family living in a spooky house and crazy ass shit keeps happening to them. They eventually move out, but even 20 years after--when the kids are all adults--the haunting of the house follows them.
There's even a 17 min scene that they shot in one shot!!!!!!!! That's wiLD.
3. Schitt's Creek
Tumblr media
Number of Seasons: 5
Number of Episodes: 66
Hours to binge: 25
Yet another show about a rich family loosing all their money. A bit different than Arrested Development. This show is about a rich ass family loosing all their money and resorting to live in Schitt's Creek--a town in Nowhere, U.S.A. the family bought as a JOKE. It's a really easy watch. The characters in this show are SO un-relatable and mean it's hilarious--only if u f*ck wit dry humor tho.
Here's my favorite character, Alexis Rose just being iconic:
youtube
Give it a try, the first few episodes are rocky, but it gets better. That's a guarantee.
4. American Vandal
Number of Seasons: 2
Number of Episodes: 16
Hours to binge: 9
A lot of people already probs watch this show, but it's honestly so beautifully written. The show is an homage to Making a Murderer, a true crime mockumentary of sorts. It follows two guys, Sam and Peter as they try to figure out a mystery: WHO DREW D*CKS ON THE TEACHER'S CARS?
Tumblr media
Also, JIMMY TATRO!!!!!
Season 2 follows a different crime and it's... it's poopy.
5. Mindhunter
Number of Seasons: 1
Number of Episodes: 10
Hours to binge: 9
Tumblr media
YUH. Just started this, already on ep. 8, very interesting. Mindhunter is about the first FBI agents to use profiling to catch serial killers. THE CHARACTERS IN THIS SHOW WALKED SO THAT HOTCH AND REID COULD RUN.
This show is no joke and based on true serial killers like the coed killer, the shoe fetish killer, and BTK, it's very.... very creepy.
ALWAYS carry pepper spray on ya, that's fer sher.
6. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
pinot noir, caviar
7. John Mulaney: The Comeback Kid
eat ass, suck a dick, and sell drugs
8. The Good Place
is it really the good place?
---------------------------------------------
On Hulu:
9. Broad City
Number of Seasons: 5
Number of Episodes: 50
Hours to binge: 18
One of the greatest television series of all time about two baller best fraaands who get into the schemes of the century in New York City. Illana, a ferocious kween wit ZERO f*cks, and Abbi, an aspiring artiste with a great ass. The two work min-wage jobs in NYC (so they're broke) and they're just trying to find luv and a good bacon egg and cheese.
Tumblr media
Think Sex and the City but fresh and new and wild. Abbi and Ilana's dialogue and schemes are relatable af, it makes it seem like you're there with them. Their co-dependency is so powerful... yet at moments, a lil destructive. I once had a friendship like this.. and let me tell you... co-dependency is a wild ride.
youtube
Some of the funniest scenes in this show is just of them talking on the street. Sometimes, when I'm walking with my friends, I pretend like I'm in the show lol.
Tumblr media
I recommend you start from beginning to end because of the endless callbacks and running gags, but if not start with season 3, episode 7 B&B-NYC. Blake Griffin is in it.
10. Community
Number of Seasons: 6
Number of Episodes: 110
Hours to binge: 41
What can I say about this show to make you watch it? Well first of all the fact that Childish Gambino (Donald Glover) is in it should already have you clicking over to Hulu by now.
Tumblr media
Community is about seven quirky misfits: a disbarred lawyer, a failed housewife, an activist everyone hates, a racist old man, a stupid jock who lost his sports scholarship, a high-strung know-it-all who took too much adderall, and abed. They all end up at Greendale Community College with a phsyco spanish teacher and a colorful dean.
Tumblr media
This show is kind of a parody of a sitcom, and it is VERY meta--often referring to themselves as TV show characters. The seven get into hilarious adventures and obstacles along the way. The show also genre hops from time to time. For example, they have a whole pillow fort vs. blanket fort episode (Pillows and Blankets, season 3, episode 4) in a Ken Burns documentary style, an episode in claymation for Christmas (Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas, season 2, episode 11), and a bunch of paintball episodes in style of Quentin Tarantino and StarWars.
Tumblr media
Again, you should start at the beginning, but if you want to get into it quickly, I really loved Pillows and Blankets (season 3, episode 4).
11. The Mindy Project
As a "petite asian woman" who is not petite, this show is very relatable. About finding love and eating good in the big apple.
P.S. If you don't like Kelly from the office, you're dead 2 m3.
12. Brooklyn 99
Cool. coolcoolcoolcool. Jake Peralta is the greatest detective/genius.
13. Superstore
If Walmart and the office had a baby and it was incompetent.
---------------------------------------------
On YouTube and Facebook Watch:
14. The Real Bros of Simi Valley
Number of Seasons: 2
Number of Episodes: 14
Hours to binge: 4
Tumblr media
You straight up know these guys, fool. Four stoner/burn-outs who think your hometown's Mexican food is the best in the world. Amazingly written and surprisingly good acting. Lightweight lowkey thought they were speaking another language at first.
Jimmy Tatro, Cody Ko, Getter, and Nick Colletti. What more do you want? LITERALLY WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT?
The unnecessary drama and endless quotable jokes in this show leads you wanting more with only 14 episodes totaling at around four hours.
Watch the first season YouTube here:
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybcPQVipNAw
---------------------------------------------
Podcasts:
15. Tiny Meat Gang
Aha hah bro last night was a movie bro ON GOD.
Tumblr media
Noel Miller and Cody Ko talk about literally anything, but goofy. I can listen to them talk for straight up hours.
I usually listen on Apple Podcasts, but you can also watch on YouTube:
https://youtu.be/ZCMs4FrC_c0
Just start listening, bro.
16. My Favorite Murder
No shade to Codel, but My Favorite Murder is my all time favorite podcast. Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark  are two hilarious women who love murder. Not murdering, but the psychology of murderers and survivors. Each Thursdays each of them tell a story about a murder. They don't make fun of murders, but it's their banter that makes it fun to listen to.
Tumblr media
If you're a fan of true crime at all, please listen so I have more people to talk about it with. shouts outs Jenna for putting me on to the show!
Here are my favorite episodes!
*tip: skip the first 15-20 min to the first murder when first listening.
150: How Dare You Kill Kelli
The Hanging of Alice Riley and The Murder of Reyena Marroquin
131: The Uninhibited
The Murder of Standford White and The Case of the Boys on the Tracks

My Fellow Americans:
I know that streaming fatigue is real and that it seems like every other day another studio or network is making their content exclusive, but if you can only afford one...let it be PBS Passport.
PBS is one of the precious few sources of reliable, unbiased information we still have. They have accurate news. Their investigative journalism has won multiple awards. They don't pander to a certain audience or try to spin stories a certain way. They don't try to shove an agenda down your throat or interview unqualified, idiotic pundits, conspiracists, or liars in the name of "balance." The only people featured in their videos are people who have earned the right to speak on the subject with some authority. And they don't even run ads! There might be a quick message from the sponsors at the beginning of a video, but other than that it's completely ad-free.
When I watch PBS shows on American history, I learn REAL history. This past week I've been watching a series on Reconstruction and have been shaken up by how much I did not know even with AP history classes. When I watch Frontline and similar programs, I see what mistakes and crimes our government has done. When I watch social/culture programs, I hear diverse perspectives and see people from different backgrounds.
The money you give to PBS does not go into the pockets of a billionaire CEO or a corporate monopoly. It goes toward high-quality, much-needed work from people who care about doing it right. Republicans know this and that's exactly why they've tried to take away its funding. PBS and the work they do are a threat to them. Having Passport memberships will help them to keep making content even if, God forbid, the republicans have their way and the organization loses its funding.
It's only $5 a month or $60 a year, and it's INCREDIBLY worth it. That's less money than you'd pay for Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Crunchyroll, or Disney+. I would give up all of those before I gave up Passport. Yes, a lot of their content is free and that's great, but it doesn't stay available very long. Usually each video they broadcast or upload is only around for a few weeks at most before it gets taken down to make room for new stuff. So unless you're watching it all the time, you'll miss a lot of exceptional content if you don't have Passport. That gives you access to hundreds more videos, if not thousands.
They have everything you could want: news, history, politics, science, art, music, theater, cooking/food, fictional shows from the BBC, documentaries, kid's shows, and a whole bunch more. There's even a program coming up about baby animals. Whatever you like, there's probably a PBS program for it. You can watch all of it on pretty much any device you have.
TL;DR: Get PBS Passport. Or at the very least, donate to your local station. Because we need PBS now more than ever.

INTERVIEW WITH TC LOVER KEVIN LOMBARDO
1) When did you first find yourself loving true crime?
“When I was 12 years old. And I’m 22 now so that is a decade of true crime obsession.”
2) Was there a specific book, tv show, documentary or other form of entertainment that opened your eyes?
“Mean Streets by Martin Scorcese. He divulges so deep into the crime scene and dark operations going on behind closed doors and all his work is affiliated with the New York/ east coast mafia in the 70’2, 80’, and 90’s. It’s all based on true stories.”
3) Why do you think you are fascinated with true crime as a genre?
“I am a director, writer, anything in the industry…I want to write crime. I want to write stories, short, feature films, I want all my scripts to focus on true crime. I want to dip deep in to the psychology and deep characteristics of human beings. Why would they do this, how did they do this, what drove them to this point, what is their purpose….every criminal has a motive and as a screenwriter I need to research true crime so I can write the characters in my stories genuinely and motives drive a great feature film. A story about an ordinary person in an extraordinary situation.”
4) Do you have a specifically favorite true crime story?
“Fuck give me a second… Probably the Gambino Crime family. That is real mafia, and I love mafia. I read that someone just got shot affiliated with them like a few weeks ago. It is wild and happening constantly.”
5) What is your favorite non-fictional crime book?
“The Tale of a New York City Cop. It is so good.”
6) What is your favorite non-fictional crime podcast?
“I dont listen to podcasts but I have heard amazing things about Serial and I am going to start.”
7) What is your favorite non-fictional crime series?
“The Ted Bundy tapes. I loved that series on Netflix. Because you can see first hand how fucking insane people are and how crazy he is. It is crazy how Ted Bundy thinks and can be in SUCH denial about guilt! He maintains his innocence throughout the whole series and it is wild. The real footage, photographs, tape recordings, newspaper clippings….its a really great series and a fantastic divulgement into Ted Bundy. I saw a side of him I didn’t know existed.”
8) Do you think true crime is lately a pop-culture obsession?
“It is totally pop culture, and I honestly think Netflix had a lot to do with that. My dad would tell me stories about the Night Stalker when he was a kid because it was around Palms where he was living, and one person who was killed by the night stalker was murdered five houses down from him. So I think I personally have always been interested in crime because of the stories my dad would tell me where he was personally affected, but lately, in pop culture there are mediums like Hulu and Netflix that make true crime stories more accessible and fun.”
9) Are serial killers being romanticized?
“I think so. Some people are weird like that…it’s actually insane. Like sending letter to them in prison and all. Bizarre.”
10) Do you think people enjoy crime as a psychological relief they are not the victim?
“I mean I never think that. Subconsciously maybe we all do but I dont think that is a big driving force why I am interested in crime.”
11) https://www.buzzfeed.com/remeepatel/only-a-true-crime-expert-can-get-more-than-710-on-this-quiz?bfsource=bfocompareon&bfsource=bfocompareon <— what did you score on this quiz?
“6 out of 8! Pretty good. One of them was tricky because there are two nightstalkers”
12) Do you like talking to other true crime lovers?
“Oh absolutely. I could talk for hours about cases and random stories, there was a case recently I heard about because my friend’s friend’s father was the one murdered and I just decided to look her up… its a crazy story about a playboy bunny, jewels, club bouncer, car on fire… and I couldn’t wait to call everyone I trusted and knew would talk with me in confidence but also loved true crime.”
13) Do you think Reddit pages, Tumblr account or other online talk forums for talking about crime glorify or condone murder?
“No I think its normal and healthy to be fascinated with crime. It is abnormal and we as humans are attracted to the gritty, crazy, abnormal, bizarre, extraordinary… Again a good movie is made from an ordinary person in an extraordinary situation.”
14) Anything else you want to say about True Crime?
“Watch Zodiac! And watch out for a film of mine coming out in the future. Kevin Lombardo written and Directed.”

(Confining with your conspiracy theories) With the boston bombing one, Hulu is making a documentary trying to tie the older brother to some random triple homicide that happened that’s suppose to come out soon. Like, what? He was literally being followed by the fbi. So much that his own mother and father had spoken with them because he was confused as why they wanted him. Yet he had the time to commit something like that? (I wonder if cloning was involved? Are they used an actor to be him?) They are really trying to hard to make sure the public is kept asleep on this because nowadays, I do see more people point out how the whole thing was a hoax when the topic is brought up. I feel terrible for their parents too... They say their sons are innocent. Just like how they had those “real truth” documentaries on 9/11 — Hulu is working on it’s programming for the masses so we don’t ask questions. We’re just told that they just were randomly ~radicalized~ just like 911. Rinse and repeat.
now, we see more people generally snapping in public that I think can be due to the elites long game strategy of poisoning our food, water and air. We’re loosing our health and sanity. Shootings will happen more, stabbings, attacks. They are watching us slowly poisoning ourselves and hurt our communities for their amusement.
I don’t know about half demon/half human hybrids as I thought they were giants in the Bible that have been dead for a while lol. But maybe they’re different types? Same with reptilians. My limited knowledge is that they’re very arrogant and actually don’t like humans at all and will refuse to be near us. I guess that depends too.
Also have you noticed how people are now aware of the mega rich elites buying underground bunkers in remote areas? Lol these elites think they can destroy the world and then wait out Armageddon. They are DEFINITELY planning for the world to end soon
While I totally agree that cloning might be at a stage much more advanced than we think, I feel like this cloning isn't as much pervasive in psy-op as we think. If the bomber has been delta programmed, it's totally possible that his family was right for saying this was totally out of character of him and him actually doing what he did (not a clone).....while being followed by the FBI. We all know the government is cahoot with these mind control programs. I am sure they already use these mind controlled super soldiers at war. Delta programmed individuals are literally programmed to not feel fear or emotions, making them more reliable than regular humans - they are perfect plant for spying operations or double agents.
I hardly watch documentaries on mainstream medias, but I couldn't not notice the flat earther stunt that's been festering in the truther scene. That's no coincidence. I've been an observer of that scene since decades now, and it wasn't much of a thing up until ~5 years ago. Debating whether earth was round was totally out of the picture. Imo this whole flat earther thing is an attempt to make the movement lose credibility.
For the overall rise of crimes, many people say the lead in water and processed food was the reason of the sudden rise of serial killers, esp in the USA. I'm on the fence about this theory bc that wouldn't explain why most criminals are men and not women - while we all eat the same food and drinks the same water. I think spirituality plays a role too, but they effect men and women differently (not only through crimes).
For reptilians the info I gathered is that they have different type of personality, some being more aggressive than others. But I know that reptilians are actually demons (shape shifter) and that they're fooling people into making them thinking they're from space of whatever... They're the spawn of the devil and we should invoke fury of lord Jesus upon them.
David Icke has to be taken with a huge pinch of salt (he's deep into new age stuff) but he had interesting stories about reptilians. He once interviewed a person saying the English Crown was full on reptilian and had seen the queen as a giant lizard... I think that was the demons channeled by these demonic bloodline that's why all monarchy are interbreeding. That's why they killed Diana, bc she was mingling with that Arab businessman and that it was unacceptable for the bloodline to be "stained". Don't you find interesting that Megan Markle is a remote blood relative (cousin) of her prince husband? She's mixed but somehow Black women identify to her (lol) when it's obvious the Crown would've NEVER let a pure Black person to stain the demonic Royal lizard blue blood. Look up Fritz Springmeier and it's conference about the 13 satanic bloodlines.
youtube
The English Crown is one of them, but there are several other accross the world, and even one in Asia. That's why David Icke entertains the idea that Africans were the original human living on earth (and that the Whites are 'artificial' crossbred from reptilians who came 'from space') because we don't have reptilian lineage. I know science is finding unique stuff into African women DNA but ultimately I don't think that means other races aren't from earth lol But I definitely think channelling demons can alter DNA (I heard that even pregnant women had their blood type change??!!) . That would explain why some geographic principalities are more prone to Power and technologic progress: it's a deal with the demons : blood & soul for power & knowledge. I'm planning to read the book of Enoch bc this book explains how demons gave forbidden knowledge to men (weaponry, drugs, astrology, etc) for self destruction.

(In *the most* non-confrontational way possible) how is the Pam & Tommy series any different than the whole True Crime genre? Countless shows, podcasts, etc about straight up murder and nobody bats an eye, but this is going too far? I don’t see how that can be reconciled.
Hey anon, I didn’t take it as confrontational at all so don’t worry! 🤗
To be honest, I’ve been asking myself the same question about a lot of different true story projects. I know that Hulu did a documentary or show about a murder and did not contact the family for permission. I know there’s more that I’m forgetting but the you get the point.
The only “true crime” thing I’ve ever watched is Narcos, which had the agents who worked through Escobar, Cali and Mexico on board and serving as consultants. I think there’s a big difference between doing a project like that, which is about important historic events and the War on Drugs, and then these true crime shows that are trying to appeal to people’s obsession with even more graphic/tragic stories. Personally, I don’t understand why people go for it…
To be honest, I don’t have an answer for this one. I don’t think true crime shit or things like P&T should be made. There are some stories that only need to be told once by the people who actually suffered through them.

Coming Attractions - July 2021
Tumblr media
As usual, we present monthly previews of new movies being released and with a whole bunch of new movies hitting theaters or streamers this month, it is fair to say that the summer movie season is finally here! These are the movies that will be hitting your local cinemas (and streaming services) this month:
July 2nd
No Sudden Move (July 1) - Steven Soderbergh directs this new period crime thriller from writer Ed Solomon (Bill & Ted) set in 1955 Detroit. The movie features an overly impressive cast that includes Don Cheadle, Benicio de Toro, David Harbour, Jon Hamm, Amy Seimetz, Brendan Fraser, Kieran Culkin, Julia Fox, and Ray Liotta. The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last month to generally favorable reviews, so be on the lookout for No Sudden Move available only on HBO Max today.
The Tomorrow War - When The Tomorrow War was initially announced in early 2019, then titled Ghost Draft, and set to star Chris Pratt with Chris McKay making his live-action film directorial debut, I was very intrigued. Flash forward more than two years later and Paramount has sold the film off to Amazon for a rumored cost of $200 million. The film hits Prime this month, and I hope it is good. We will see...
The Boss Baby: Family Business - The sequel to the 2017 film that my son absolutely loves will be coming to theaters and Peacock this month. This seems to be the first film in which Universal is following the HBO Max model of a streaming release (free for subscribers) concurrent with a theatrical release. Alec Baldwin returns to voice the titular Boss Baby, while James Marsden takes the place of Tobey Maguire who was apparently too busy to return for the sequel (No Way Home?) and Amy Sedaris joins the cast as a new baby at BabyCorp and the daughter of Marsden’s character.
The Forever Purge - The fifth and final film in The Purge franchise hits theaters this weekend. The Forever Purge is a direct sequel to 2016′s The Purge: Election Year in which the events of the annual Purge have explored past their one-day-a-year allowance. As a fan of both the films in the series and the short-lived television show, I am excited for this final Purge film. With this film and Boss Baby 2 coming to theaters this weekend and F9 only entering its second weekend, it is likely that over the Fourth of July weekend, Universal could have 3 of the top 5 (if not the top 3) films at the box office. Way to own a weekend Universal (not that there is much competition at the moment).
Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) - Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson of The Roots directs this documentary about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival that includes never before seen footage from the festival that set in a basement for 50 years. The film has garnered rave reviews since its premiere at Sundance in January where it won top honors in the documentary category. Summer of Soul hits theaters and Hulu this weekend.
Fear Street Part 1: 1994 - Hitting Netflix is the first installment of this slasher trilogy loosely based on R.L. Stine’s books. Netflix’s release plan for the trilogy is a unique one and thankfully audiences won’t have to wait long for the second installment of these inter-connected films.
July 9th
Black Widow - After almost two years away from the big screen, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is back in cinemas with the Scarlett Johansson-led Black Widow. The film which takes place after the events of Captain America: Civil War also stars David Harbour, Rachel Weisz, and Florence Pugh in a role that could be seen as one set to take over for the titular heroine after the events of Avengers: Endgame. During the second half of 2021, Marvel Studios has four films set to hit theaters and Black Widow is only the beginning of their comeback tour. See Black Widow in theaters or on Disney+ with Premier Access ($30).
Fear Street Part 2: 1978 - Here we go, the second installment of the Fear Street trilogy. What questions from the first film will be answered when a summer camp in 1978 is under siege, we will have to tune in to the sequel on Netflix to find out.
July 16th
Gunpowder Milkshake (July 14th) - Karen Gillan stars alongside Lena Headey, Carla Gugino, Michelle Yeoh, Angela Bassett, and Paul Giamatti in this action thriller from Israeli director Navot Papushado. The film, which has a John Wick feel to it, hits Netflix this month.
Space Jam: A New Legacy - The Tune Squad is back on the court alongside Lebron James in this standalone sequel to 1996′s Space Jam. The film, also starring Don Cheadle and Sonequa Martin-Green in addition to numerous Looney Tunes, will be released in both theaters and on HBO Max.
Escape Room: Tournament of Champions - After grossing $150 million on a $9 million budget, a sequel to the breakout hit 2016′s Escape Room was inviable. I rather enjoyed the first film and am eager to see this direct sequel which follows our champions from the first film, alongside other escape room survivors as they end up back inside the deadly game.
Fear Street Part 3: 1666 - At long last, the much-anticipated conclusion to the Fear Street trilogy hits Netflix, how will it all end? Who will live and who will die? And what does the 17th century mean to the story? Watch it and find out. Funny enough, by the time this movie comes out, everyone will be talking about Fear Street or no one will be.
July 23rd
Old - M. Night Shyamalan directs this new supernatural mystery thriller starring Gael Garcia Bernal, Vicky Krieps, Rufus Sewell, Ken Leung, and Alex Wolff. The less you know about Old the better, so I am going to stop right there.
Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins - When deciding to make a film about a character who always wears a helmet and never speaks, what do you do? Well, you cast Henry Golding and make it an origin story, and there you have it Snake Eyes was born. If you are super excited for Snake Eyes, check it out in theaters. If you are lukewarm about Snake Eyes like me, you can wait 45 days and watch it on Paramount+.
Blood Red Sky - Remember Snakes on a Plane? Well, Blood Red Sky is essentially Vampires on a Plane, if the vampires were the good guys. This is a real movie coming to Netflix, I promise.
Midnight in the Switchgrass - In this crime thriller based on a true story, two FBI agents, played by Bruce Willis and Megan Fox, team up with a Texas Ranger, played by Emile Hirsh, to catch a serial killer. Good luck.
July 30th
Jungle Cruise - Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt star in this Disney fantasy adventure based on a theme park ride of the same name. The film looks like if you mixed Pirates of the Caribbean with Anaconda. I cannot wait to take a ride on the Jungle Cruise later this month. The film will be out in theaters and available on Disney+ with Premier Access ($30).
Stillwater - Spotlight’s Tom McCarthy directs Matt Damon and Abigail Breslin in this drama that follows a Stillwater, Oklahoma oil worker to France to help his estranged daughter who has been charged with murder. The film is scheduled to premiere at Cannes later this month before hitting theaters nationwide.
The Green Knight - Dev Patel leads the charge in this highly anticipated medieval epic from director David Lowrey and co-starring Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton, Barry Keoghan, and Sean Harris. The film tells the 14th-century story of Sir Gawain, the nephew of King Arthur, on his quest to confront the Green Knight. The movie looks bonkers. Check it out in theaters.
Nine Days - Winston Duke, Zazie Beetz, Benedict Wong, and Bill Skarsgård star in this supernatural drama that made a big splash at Sundance in January 2020. Now the film is finally seeing a limited release this month, before a wide release on August 6th.
Now for a quick look ahead to August, my top picks for next month are The Suicide Squad, Free Guy, and Reminiscence.

116 - Council Member Flynn, Part 3
Good hidden recording devices make good neighbors. Welcome to Night Vale.
Council member Tamika Flynn announced today that she’s pretty comfortable doing this whole City Council thing, now that Night Vale is completely crime free. She announced this standing atop an onyx pyramid, waving a golden scepter. Mayor Dana Cardinal responded that while crime is clearly down, budgets for the new fiscal year have not been completed, and Night Vale is showing a marked financial loss this quarter, due in large part to strict evening curfews. She announced this silently into her journal, which she plans to publish as a scathing memoir some day.
Sheriff Sam announced that the increased number of Secret Police officers has really had a positive impact on crime, but most of the police force now is volunteer or underpaid, and grossly unqualified. It’s basically a bunch of random citizens with makeshift weapons carved out of tree branches or fashioned from broken blade-based kitchen appliances. The Sheriff noted that management of council member Flynn’s citizen patrols has greatly impeded the capture of both the serial robber and the escaped librarian. Sheriff Sam quietly grumbled this into their bathroom mirror before finally putting on makeup and facing their day.
Council member Flynn later said she received a postcard from the rest of City Council, who has been vacationing in Milstigan the past month. On the front of the postcard was a serene lake nestled among tall pines and speckled with herrings and fishing boats. Above the lake were eight Black Hawk helicopters, dangling each of the letters of the state name: M-I-B-S-T-I-C-A-N. On the back, the City Council had written: “Saw an article that Night Vale has the lowest crime rate. Guess you’re doing fine without us and we don’t need to come back.” The postcard continued: “We learned how to kayak and we bought a professional grade DSLR and learned to tie sailing knots. Michelin is awesome! Maybe we won’t ever come back. Maybe we are not wanted.”
Council member Flynn said she wrote them back a postcard which she taped to a giant scorpion that read: “Yeah, I’ve got this under control. Happy apple picking.”
Night Vale coroner Lorelei Alvarez issued her report today on the autopsy of the two bodies found at the green market co-op, which burned down last month in an apparent robbery-arson. These bodies are believed to be those of green market owner Tristan Cortez and his daughter Camilla, a business student at Night Vale Community College. Alvarez, however, said that without dental records for the Cortezes, she can’t be certain that these bodies are theirs. The bodies had almost no burns on them, despite being found in a building leveled by fire. There were also no gunshot wounds. Alvarez said, “These two bodies were wearing 19th century formal attire and had apparently been pecked to death by birds.” She added she had not ruled out that birds could have committed robberies, nor that the Cortez family had an anachronistic fashion sense. Alvarez added with a grin that she’s also gotten a few bodies that had been mostly devoured by the escaped librarian. She said it’s fascinating that librarians tend to eat only bones and ligaments, and not flesh or skin. So most of these corpses looked like rumpled soft leather sacks, which makes them much easier to store. Alvarez has so much more free space in her office now and has added a tetherball pole.
And now sports. Tonight, the Night Vale High School Scorpions take on division rival Red Mesa Ant Carpenters in varsity wheelchair basketball. This afternoon, there will be a pep rally led by team captain Janice Palmer. Also she’s my niece. The team captain is my niece. Councilwoman Tamika Flynn will also deliver a speech at the pep rally about the importance of teamwork and fighting crime with sports. Also, the importance of books. “Did you know there are books about sports?” is the title of Flynn’s speech. Flynn also requested, for reasons having to do with public safety, that the pep rally be moved away from the high school to the Old Night Vale armory, and that every person there stand exactly two feet apart and bring some type of shield and/or sharp object that could be used to fend off robbers or librarians. The pep rally is at noon. Go get’em, Janice!
Listeners, Mayor Cardinal and her director of emergency press conferences, Pamela Winchell, have called an emergency press conference to denounce the City Council’s poor efforts to sustain the integrity and stability of Night Vale. Mayor Cardinal dismissed the City Council’s – essentially Tamika Flynn’s – curfew as virtually meaningless, now that more than half of the population is on the citizen patrol force. “We basically have a town of municipally approved armed vigilantes walking around at all hours of the night.” Winchell seconded the Mayor’s point by adding: “Why do I video myself sleeping? What am I hoping to discover? What secrets does my body whisper when I am unconscious?”
Also, the president of the Night Vale school board, the giant glowing cloud who drops dead animals, made an impassioned speech in support of the Mayor via mind control. The entire crowd chanted: “All hail the mighty Cloud who wants the lowly City Council to pass a budget that favors increased spending on education! We grovel before the almighty Cloud! How hard can it be to make a human budget? All hail!” they repeated.
The Mayor said she’s received many letters from people claiming they have lost their jobs as waiters, cab drivers, theatre managers and costumed superheroes because of the strict curfews. Night Vale Community host Cecil Palmer also announced today, live on his radio show, right now, that the curfew has been super productive for his TV watching, as he has already burned through every HBO and Showtime series. Plus all of “Difficult People” on Hulu, which features his second favorite actor, James Urbaniak. My favorite is, of course, Lee Marvin – may his name ring forever in eternity.
Palmer added, at this very second, that while he’s caught up on a lot of good television and is very excited for the new season of the documentary series “Stranger Things”, he and his husband are getting a little stir crazy. There are only so many games of strip Uno a couple can play before they just wanna go out for a nice dinner and maybe a romantic stroll in the park. Councilwoman Flynn was not available for comment, although a sign above her locked office door said: “Quiet, reading a book on how to do financial spreadsheets”.
Listeners, I mentioned earlier my niece Janice and how proud I am of her for captaining her school’s basketball team. But I’m also a bit worried about her too. She looks perpetually exhausted. In the preseason tournament, she led all players in assists. She did everything she could to win games, but they just couldn’t quite do it. Her statistics bear this out, but still she’s taken on so much responsibility for the team’s losses. Her Dad and team assistant coach, Steve Carlsberg, says Janice has increased her practice time to increase her fantastic passing skills, hoping to at least double the number of assists she gets. But Steve says that despite her better skills and more focused demeanor during practice, her team mates just aren’t hitting their shots when she passes to them. She throws them the ball shouting: “Shoot it! You’re open, Julie!” But they miss over and over, even the ones named Julie.
Steve is trying to convince her to work more on her defense and shooting, that assists aren’t everything. But Janice got frustrated with this and called Steve selfish. “Assists are the most unselfish thing, Steve Carlsberg!” she shouted before leaving the gym to pout by her locker earlier this morning. “Maybe I should just quit,” Steve heard her mumble. You know, I’m sure it’s just a teenager fighting with her stepdad, and she’ll be all ready to go for today’s pep rally. Which is set to start in a few minutes. I’ll check in with her later tonight to make sure she’s doing OK.
Councilwoman Tamika Flynn has arrived early for today’s pep rally to deliver a brief statement about vigilance, self-preservation, and keeping our town crime free. Even though there’s a librarian on the loose, and our Sheriff has yet to catch the serial robber, our streets are super safe,” Flynn said. “I read a book this morning about how low crime rates are excellent for local economies. The book is ‘Lonesome Dove’ by Larry McMurtry, in case you’re interested.” “Look around you,” she continued, “no one here is being crimed upon, because we are protecting each other. We are watchful and observant.” “As my father once warned,” Tamika Flynn said, “beware the robot uprising! Beware the machines that will bring us down! That’s what he always told me before bed, and we must heed this words, Night Vale. At any moment, a great enemy could be upon us.” Tamika then said: “Hey, it’s after 12. Aren’t we supposed to start this pep rally? I’m in the middle of Greg Harvey’s literary masterpiece and winner of the Man Booker Price, ‘Microsoft Excel for Dummies’, so let’s make this quick. I’m really into that book,” she concluded.
But the crowd murmured, confused and agitated. The captain of the team was not there. And as they looked for the pep rally’s leader, the bearer of the basketball torch, my niece, my only niece – the stage began to shake, the earth began to split, and smoke and dust are currently filling the Night Vale armory in choking plumes. Oh my god, Night Vale, where’s Janice? Where is my niece?
Listen to today’s weather while I find out where she is.
[“Animal Skin” by Bryan Dunn]
The rest of the City Council has returned to Night Vale. They burrowed through the earth and up through the floor of the armory where the pep rally was being held. They apologized for the dramatic and destructive entrance, but their flight out was really turbulent and there was no meal service. So they thought they’d take the slower, but more comfortable route home. The multi-limbed, multi-voiced, single-bodied entity of the City Council was wearing a T-shirt that said: “Mitchigan – America’s sexiest forests”, featuring little cartoon tees with ribbed abs and bubble butts. The City Council then presented two people whose hands were bound with ropes, tied off tight with perfect bowline nuts. It was Tristan Cortez and his daughter, Camilla. The City Council said they found the Cortezes while rock climbing. According to the City Council, Camilla had devised an insurance scam, which Tristan set up by committing a series of small armed robberies around Night Vale, to make the robbery and the subsequent arson of their new store more believable. They stole two bodies from the old cemetery, which flooded last month, and laid those in the burned-out husk of their former market to fake their deaths. Camilla created a fake ID for a sister she didn’t have, named Tamilla, who lived in Mistrigen, where they planned to live out life bird watching and parasailing in the paradise of America’s most hand shaped state. The City Council laid out this entire plot, as they presented Sheriff Sam with the two fraudsters. Then the City Council turned to their newest member, Tamika Flynn and said, “We also completed the new city budget,” as they dropped a six-inch high stack of papers, like it was a mic at a poetry slam.
And even better, listeners: Janice finally arrived. We found her! After the City Council made their speech, the basketball team captain stepped to the mic and said she was running late today because she was practicing so hard to be a better passer, to have more assists, to be empirically the best team mate that the league record books have ever seen. But then, just this morning after a fight with her stepdad, she realized she was wrong. “You can’t measure leadership,” Janice said. “I’ve been so worried about that one number, that one datum that seems so selfless. But the act of pursuing that number is in itself selfish.” Janice said, “I can’t do this all on my own. I can’t expect everyone else to score thinking I’m being helpful. Each one of us has a different skill set, and as your captain, I want you to be great at scoring, defense, rebounding, whistling, and the occasional hex – the five pillars of sound basketball. So let’s get out there and beat Red Mesa!”
The crowd cheered and joined together to sing the Night Vale school song, “You Walk with Me, You Walk Alone under an Indifferent Dust-filled Sky”.
Tamika then spoke. She stood before her fellow citizens, her constituents, and said: “I want the best for all of us, I really do. I’m new at this, and the one thing I know how to do well, really well, is fight, and I want that for everyone. Also read, I’m awesome at reading. I want that for you too. Government jobs are weird because you can’t really fight a lot of crime. You mostly do paperwork and have meetings and scan retinas. Government is evasive and stupid and slow, and it’s because there are so many people it has to account for. And I realize it takes lots of time and lots of people to change. I just want this to change. I want us to feel safe. I also want to finish this amazing novel about Microsoft Excel, it is so compelling.”
At the behest of Tamika Flynn, the City Council voted unanimously to lift the town-wide curfew. And restaurants have already began to reopen, as well as theaters, public parks, clothing stores and bloodstone circle repair shops. Even the library has reopened with plans to renovate the security gates and triple barred cages that keep the librarians safely away from society. And with the return of library activities, escaped librarian Dan McDowell even returned to his former job, promising not to eat anyone else, unless they were trying to check out a book. The City Council also voted to keep all the city buildings painted blood red, because quote, “That’s intimidating AF.” And then they tried to vote to change the town motto to “Night Vale – Intimidating AF”. But it lost by a single deciding vote, which belonged to Tamika, who said we should pace ourselves. She then quoted Jean-Jacques Rousseau: “Patience is bitter, buts its fruit is mad sweet, like a swole grape.”
Sheriff Sam praised the City Council for capturing these criminals. Mayor Cardinal praised the City Council, too, but she added praise specifically for Tamika Flynn. Mayor Cardinal said, “I’m proud of you, Councilwoman Flynn. I did not agree with your tactics, but I think your heart is in the right place. It will take time, but we can do this.” Tamika accepted the Mayor’s kind words and a comforting embrace, and then returned to her office to finish her novel about spreadsheets.
Night Vale, Janice and Tamika are growing up before our eyes, and I couldn’t be prouder of either. But more importantly, I couldn’t be more excited to get out of the house! Carlos and I are headed straight to dinner at the Shallow Grave, and then going dancing at that new club, Numb, which opened up mere minutes after the curfew was lifted.
Stay tuned next to the sound of two men putting on just the most vicious outfits.
Good night, Night Vale, Good night.
Today’s proverb: We are all (an elite few) in this (a secret underground emergency bunker) together (on our own without public knowledge).

Weekend Warrior Home Edition – April 3, 2020 – Slay the Dragon, Tape and More
Well, things sure have gone to hell since I last wrote this weekly column that I’ve now been doing in some form or another at one place or other for over nineteen years! For the first time in those 19 years and probably a good 80 or 90 years before that, there were no movies in theaters. In fact, there were no movie theaters. Because of this, the last two weekends have been the first in history with ZERO BOX OFFICE. It’s kind of tough to write a column about the box office and theatrical releases when there are none, n’est ce pas?
So I’m going to try to evolve for the time being, and we’ll see how that goes. I’m not too thrilled about having to watch movies as screeners, let alone writing about movies that will probably never get a theatrical release, but I’ll try to make the best of it. (Oh, and Disney’s Onward, which opened in theaters less than a month ago will be available ON DISNEY+* tomorrow.) (*corrected)
Tumblr media
This week’s “Featured Movie” that you absolutely must see, especially if you’re reading this from one of the “red states” and feel like government just isn’t doing things the way you’d like them to do, is Barak Goodman and Chris Durrance’s political documentary SLAY THE DRAGON (Magnolia).  It covers how gerrymandering is being used in census years (like this one) to maintain a Republican majority in local and state government.  Goodman’s doc begins in Michael Moore territory of Flint, Michigan and shows how gerrymandering was used to create a Republican majority that led to the town getting water from the nearby Flint River which contaminated the pipes and leaked lead into the system.
The film does a good job explaining gerrymandering in an easy to understand way by following a few specific cases of people fighting against the policies.  Counties and voting districts in different states aren’t just a straight grid on a map. Instead, the districts are drawn up to cause an unfair advantage to a party. This was especially true of the REDMAP program instituted in 2008 by the GOP after Barack Obama was elected President to make sure Republicans could dominate Congress as well as politics on a state level.
Much of the film deals with Katie Fahey’s group Citizens United that has decided to take on the politicians with its grassroots campaign to allow the people’s voices and votes to start counting. (One of the programs that grew out of REDMAPping was that thousands of voters were not able to vote since a few states passed a law that ID was required to vote, thereby keeping black and brown voters from the polls.)
Yes, it’s a rather complicated situation but it’s one that people in the primarily liberal states like New York, California and others really need to know about, since it’s why we have a reality TV host as our President right now as well as why we have a Republican Senate that just prevented him from being impeached. All of the bigger politics goes back to the individual state politics and how gerrymandering and REDMAP unfairly sways the vote against those who win on the state level in census years (essentially every ten years including 2020). Originally, this was going to get a theatrical release in March but now it will only be available on digital and On Demand, so you can find out how to see it on the official site.
I also want to give a little extra attention to Deborah Kampmeier’s TAPE (Full Moon Films), which skipped its theatrical release instead to do an interesting “virtual theatrical run,” playing every night On Demand via CrowdCast. It’s available every night at 7pm eastern followed by discussions with the filmmakers and then will be on Digital and VOD on April 10. Again, these are changing times, but this is a haunting and powerful thriller based on true events, starring Anarosa Mudd as a woman trying to catch a sleezy casting agent (Tarek Bishara) who is preying on actresses and one in particular, played by Isabelle Fuhrman (Orphan). Both of their performances are pretty amazing, Mudd playing a shaven-head whistleblower and Fuhrman playing an ambitious young actress who think she’s finally gotten her much-needed break, but finding out there’s a lot darker side to the business than she expected. While a lot of people have raved about The Assistant as a response to #MeToo, this is a much starker and direct look at the abuse of power to take advantage of young women. The movie is not going to be for everybody, because it takes some time before you realize what Mudd’s character (who could just as easily be Rose MacGowan) is up to, but the way how things play out in the film makes it unforgettable. It’s a fantastic new movie from Kampmeier, who famously had an underage Dakota Fanning have a rape scene in her earlier movie, Hounddog.
A movie that was released last week that I didn’t get to write about (but it’s still available On Demand and Digitally, as many movies currently are) is Lorcan Finnegan’s VIVARIUM (Saban Films), starring Jesse Eisenberg and Imogen Poots. It’s a virtual two-hander in which they play a couple who look at a house in a suburban housing complex where every house looks the same. They soon learn that they can’t escape and things get weirder and weirder from there. I can’t say I loved the movie, because it just got weirder and weirder, almost to a fault at times.
Polish filmmaker Malgorzata Szumowska’s THE OTHER LAMB (IFC Midnight) is another movie about a religious cult, this one a group of women that live in a remote forest commune led by a man they call “Shepherd” (played by Michiel Huisman from Game of Thrones and The Haunting of Hill House). It follows a teenager named Selah (Raffey Cassidy) who begins to question her existence when she starts having nightmarish visions. This was okay, but I really have hit my limit in terms of movies about religious cults. They’ve just been overdone.
Mike Doyle’s rom-com ALMOST LOVE (Vertical) is about a group of middle-aged friends trying to navigate love and relationships with a cast that includes Scott Evans, Kate Walsh, Patricia Clarkson, Augustus Prew and more. Some of the characters are having marital issues, others are dating or getting into early feelings of possible love. It’s a nice distraction from all the serious stuff going on in the world today.
A great music doc now On Demand, digital and other formats (Blu-ray/DVD) is Brent Wilson’s STREETLIGHT HARMONIES (Gravitas), which takes a look at the early doo-wop vocal groups of the ‘50s and ‘60s that predated and formed the basis for Rock & Roll, Rhythm & Blues and other music genres as we know them today. It deals with acts like The Drifters, Little Antony and the Imperials, The Platters, and Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers. It includes interviews with some of the more recent acts influenced by it including En Vogue and N’Sync as well as Brians Wilson and McKnight. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this despite doo-wop not being my preferred music style. (For the sake of transparency, I helped out with a little bit of publicity on this film.)
Also, Olivier Meyrou’s fly-on-the-wall doc Celebration (1091) is a movie that was commissioned by Yves Saint Laurent’s former lover and business partner, Pierre Bergé, more than ten years ago but was shelved for being too revealing. It was filmed over the course of three years where Laurent was at his most frail and mostly separated from the world as we get a look inside one of the last great haute couture houses. It’s now available On Demand and digitally.
Jon Abrahams directs and co-stars in Clover (Freestyle Digital Media) opposite the great Mark Webber, playing bumbling Irish twins trying to pay off their father’s debt to local mob boss Tony Davolo, played by Chazz Palminteri. Things get more complicated when a teen girl named Clover (Nicole Elizabeth Berger) shows up and the brothers need to protect her from Tony’s “hit-women.” Looks like a fun dark comedy.
Unfortunately, Saban Films didn’t offer advance review screeners of the action sequel, Rogue Warrior: The Hunt (Saban Films), directed by Mike Gunther, but it stars Will Yun Lee.  I’m not sure if this is a sequel to 2017’s Rogue Warrior: The Hunt, but I haven’t seen that either. It involves the leader of an elite team of soldiers being captured by terrorists, so his team needs rescue him. Oh, and Stephen Lang (Avatar, Don’t Breathe) is in it, too.
STREAMING AND CABLE
This week’s Netflix offerings include the streaming network’s latest true-crime documentary series, HOW TO FIX A DRUG SCANDAL, directed by Erin Lee Carr (Dirty Money), which covers the 2013 case of Sonja Farak, a crime drug lab specialist who was arrested for tampering with evidence but also accused of using the drugs she was supposed to be testing.  (It’s on the service as of this writing.)
Stuber and Good director Michael Dowse helms the action-comedy COFFEE & KAREEM, starring Ed Helms as police officer James Coffee, who begins dating Taraji P. Henson’s Vanessa Manning while her 12-year-old son Kareem (Terrence Little Gardenhigh) plots their break-up. Kareem hires criminal fugitives to kill Coffee but instead ends up getting his whole family targeted, so the two must team up. Also starring Betty Gilpin, RonReaco Lee, Andrew Bachelor and David Alan Grier.
Also on Friday, Disney Plus will stream two Disneynature docs, Dolphin Reef and Elephant, in honor of Earth Day taking place later this month. Previously, one or both of these movies might have been released theatrically but hey, earth is going to hell right now.
Now playing on Hulu is the latest installment of Blumhouse’s “Into the Dark,” Alejandro Brugué’s Pooka Lives, which ties in with “Pooka Day” (no idea what that is) but apparently, Pooka is a fictional creature like “Slender Man” that was created on Creepypasta  by a group of friends that goes viral but then manifests into creatures that become real. It stars fan faves Felicia Day, Will Wheaton, Rachel Bloom and more.
Next week, more movies not in theaters!
By the way, if you read this week’s column and have read this far down, feel free to drop me some thoughts at Edward dot Douglas at Gmail dot Com or send me a note on Twitter. I love hearing from readers!

January Jewels
Forgive the lateness of this post! Here are the highlights from January.
Still using the Origins GinZing Eye Cream and I think it’s working, so I’ll keep at it. It doesn’t leave those red circles under my eyes (that other eye creams have done to me) when I’m using it either, which is a huge plus.
I can’t remember if I’ve ever mentioned how good this ArtNaturals shampoo & conditioner is for hair growth. I’ve been using it for a few months and it obviously takes a bit to start working, but it definitely does. I’ve also tried their Himalayan salt scrub, which is also pretty great.
Again, I’m not sure I’ve ever mentioned it, but I’ve been in love with this perfect tinted moisturizer from AmorePacific for about a year now. I know that it’s too expensive, but I really try to make it last at least a year to make it worth it.
Nobody told me how good orzo is! I may have told Nathan it’s a kind of rice so that we can continue to eat it regularly?
I watched about three or four episodes of Tidying Up with Marie Kondo since every person on the planet did as well, and I think I’m good and don’t need to watch more. Although I did see this one Buzzfeed post about actually helpful insights from her whole deal.
Did you know that if you have an iPhone, you can literally shake it to undo typing? Layla just taught me that, so great.
I tried the burger at Beebe’s and it was good! Especially if you’re in the mood for something quick & tasty.
Tumblr media
Read & loved Busy Philipp’s new book.
Sampled some of the donuts at Dough and… oh man. Too doughy! I know, don’t kill me. And there were barely any poppy seeds on a supposed “lemon poppy seed donut.” Go home!
I’ve been using Kiehl’s Buttermask For Lips for a few weeks and even though it’s pretty decent, I think the Laneige Lip Mask is a slightly better product in terms of how soft it makes your lips in the morning.
Finally ate at Emily in the West Village. Didn’t realize they took over the old Blue Ribbon location, it’s such a beautifully small spot. The food was fantastic, it’s still unclear to me what exactly a Detroit-style pizza is, but it’s lovely and weird and so good. The burger was great too, just definitely not worth $27, that’s insanity for meat on a bun, I’m sorry.
Oh! I tried this awful salmon recipe off of Half Baked Harvest, which usually has amazing recipes. I kind of like that that woman isn’t perfect now.
Had the best hot chocolate of the season so far at Boro Hotel.
My friend Dave Merheje has a stand-up special on Netflix that is crazy good and he’s the best and you have to watch it.
So I’m all caught up on This Is Us and man. It’s a lot. When William told Randall, “Take me to meet your father” and he starts talking to Jack at the tree? I haven’t cried that much at a scene since Tom Hanks lost Wilson. Good christ. I think one of the best parts about this show is that it covers all the years of a life of someone and I feel like no show has tried to do that, it’s so crazy good at times.
Tell me you’ve seen the Futurama episode Jurassic Bark about Fry’s dog. I wept.
I’ve been hearing about Xi’an Famous Foods forever, so I made it over there and ate the spicy lamb cumin noodles, which was huge and really good, definitely enough for two people. It was super spicy and the lamb was incredible.
Finally tried Smith & Cult nail polishes and they last a pretty decent amount of time. In love with the colours Stockholm Syndrome & Doe My Dear.
Also in love with Cara Cara oranges. Find them. Eat them. Love them.
There’s this wicked new pizza place in my neighborhood, Massa’s, which definitely has a hint of what is so good about Patsy’s in the city.
Obviously I watched both Fyre Festival documentaries because none of us are individuals in this age and while the Hulu one was good for showing the terrible-ness of the financial specifics, and the Netflix one was good for showing the bigger picture of what a scumbag he is and the specifics of people who were screwed over - BOTH really were the same fucking movie. Dick guy. Dick advertising company. Dicks all ‘round.
I’ve been watching this 100 Baby Sims Challenge (a new one comes out each week roughly) and they’re so addictive to watch. I don’t even feel the urge to play, it’s weirdly enjoyable just to watch.
Watched the Ted Bundy tapes and after seeing the whole “series” on Netflix, I’m officially on board with the death penalty. I used to be against it more or less, but definitely on board with it now. Another thing? I can’t watch these types of series anymore. Not because they’re too horrific to think about or because they’re such awful crimes (they are, both of those things), but it’s infuriating to watch these pieces that treat these vile human beings with such dignity, who are thoughtfully studied and analyzed while each victim simply has a name, a photo and how she was brutally murdered… and that’s it. It’s demoralizing to everyone who suffered as a result of those crimes and disgusting that these despicable men are treated as celebrities with any kind of rights. It’s sick.
Tried Cadbury’s Royal Dark Chocolate and I swear it doesn’t even taste like dark chocolate, it’s so good. It’s like what all other dark chocolate WISHES it tasted like.
Went to Tavern On The Green in Central Park for the first time! This place will forever remind me of Ghostbusters, it’s amazing that it’s even still around. The service was great, the light inside the place is so bright and lovely, the food was fairly average, but I am glad I went.
Finally ate at The Dutch (somewhere I’ve wanted to try for years) and it was perfect. Look, I have a soft spot for steak tartare and their wagyu one was phenomenal. Even the jalapeño cornbread with whipped butter that comes before the food was amazing. Although bad cornbread is hard to find. The kale Caesar wasn’t anything to write home about, but that’s okay. The service was stellar and the hostess even said, “Goodbye Ms. Heather!” on my way out, which I loved. I will definitely be back here.
Tumblr media
I made two new recipes from Chrissy Teigen’s second cookbook: the salted maple granola and the cheesy spicy breakfast hash. Both were crazy good! Some notes: ignore the microwave instruction on the hash. And lessen the granola ingredient amounts unless you want to be eating this granola for a year (it also tastes amazing unbaked).
I returned to Augustine inside The Beekman for Restaurant Week for lunch and even though it was day 1 of having the flu, the food (that I ended up taking home) was delicious. A decent steak tartare and a roast chicken that would put all others to shame.
I was in Starbucks on my laptop recently and since I forgot my headphones, I had to listen to the Hamilton soundtrack that they had on for at least an hour. Aaaaannnndddd I feel like you know where I’m going with this. Hamilton sounds like it fucking suuuuhuuuucks. I promise I’m not just hating for the sake of hating something successful. It actually sucked hard. I can’t imagine sitting through the actual performance, good god the patience you’d have to have.
Read The War of Art upon Nathan’s insistence.
So excited for the Big Mouth Valentine’s special next week.

Genuine request: what scripture states that a Christian cannot enjoy media that is not connected to the Bible? Obviously we know its wrong to watch and read things that idolize wickedness, but, what about the rest, the shows and media that instead portray Christian values. (I'm sorry if i come off as rude, by the way.)
Please don't ask me advice I already said I loathe Christian Q&A blogs...!! 😂
The only reason I'll reply is because you stated there was Scriptures saying we shouldn't enjoy media not related to the Bible when that's not true.
I don't have TV so I don't really know what TV programs are up to (beside I'm not American so I don't really know what US TV looks like) but when I go see my mom (who still have TV) I switch to documentary channels. Whether it's travel, History... Investigation can be very interesting too (the last one I saw was the FYRE festival fiasco - a fascinating display of degenerated millenial culture LOL) - I'm cautious with the crime investigation cause the potential gruesomeness can be a turn me off. I also LOVE food shows lol (Nigella Lawson is a QUEEN).
Animated shows/anime/manga is a cesspool 99% of the time so trying to find something worth watching/reading is like trying to find a needle in a haystack but some decent and safe shows do exist. At the top of my head Shirokuma Cafe, Kindaichi Shōnen no Jikenbo, Detective Conan, Jiro Taniguchi mangas etc...
Aside any of this I really enjoy 'alter info' channels on YouTube. They're not necessarily Christian but they provide very interested raw information that is very interesting to use and digest on a Christian perspective (for example looking up CERN, satanic/masonic networks etc)
To sum up, my standards when deciding to watch something not openly 'Christian' is:
Is it intellectually fulfilling?
Is it useful?
Does it showcase something openly ungodly (witchcraft/superpowers, sexual acts, etc)/ that I would make me uncomfortable to watch with Jesus next to me? 🤣 if the answer is no then you better drop it altogether. Simple.
If the media I'm about to indulge in doesn't live up to one of these criterias then I don't watch them. I happen to backslide from time to time but this is a guideline I'm doing my best to respect.
There's a whole world beside Netflix, Disney+, Hulu and Hollywood. People are just not paying attention - and since satan control big media corporations he has the power to make them more alluring and culturally monopolizing. It's also important to notice entertainment is not something just passive but also proactive. It can be sport, gardening, handiword etc.. Personally I have a passion with drawing. I could spend HOURS drawing. I can make clothes from scratch too. I know knitting.
You'll notice none of them are problematic on a biblical standpoint, because they ask you to rely on yourself and set you away of external influence. My opinion on entertainment is that you are safer when you don't rely on any foreign influence.
Thinking of this, it's sad to think about all the talent wasted by people spending their time passively looking at a screen rather than developing and discovering the skills God provided to them.
