Review: Bottoms (2023)
Bottoms is a sapphic teen sex comedy about two unpopular lesbians that start a women's fight club at their high school to try and hook up with cheerleaders after a series of miscommunication and escalating lies to looks cool. Hands down one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. And one of the smartest.
It's plot is absolutely wild, but it captures normal teen emotions so honestly. It both embraces the tropes of classic teen comedies (especially of the 1980s) while subverting them entirely. Everything is a little too big and off the rails in a way things feels when you're a teenager going through all this for the first time in your life. Magnified by the systemic injustice of being a young woman in 2023. It really captures that feeling of surviving high school feeling like a life or death struggle.
All the adults are failing these kids in unique ways. So literally and metaphorically the kids are teaching themselves and they don't know what they're doing or how to stay safe or how to keep things from getting out of hand. Even when an adult is explicitly supposed to be watching over them or is gone to for advice, the kids come away only knowing not to be like them. I love how Mr. G embodies misogyny and fake allies in it for themselves. His apathy and desire to cover his ass allows this to get started. The coming of age lesson is that the girls are going to have to figure out how to save the world because the adults aren't coming to save them. There's a comradery in that.
The characters feel so complicated and alive. You could make a whole film about any one of them. All with their own hangups and ambitions. The film pokes fun at them but also sympathetically understands them. Except the football team and their supporters who very much represent toxic masculinity in a cishet patriarchal society that glamorizes violence. But with a cartoon violence energy.
They threaded some incredibly tight lines here. It faced some tough subjects head on but with so much humor. The jokes you've been waiting for someone to pull off for years.
Great film. You should watch it. Queer people continue to be the funniest filmmakers on the planet.

Problems with bottoms:
You know how The Take has been oh everyone on set was sooooo good at improv a lot of the lines were improv-Ed because everyone was so funny and good at improv. And then in the end credits they show you the improv-Ed Alt Cuts of a lot of scenes. And nobody in the theater laughs and your face for every joke cut is. 😐
The entire premise of putting Rachel sennott and ayo edebiri in oversized t shirts dusting off their hands and saying. My job is done. These two beautiful women who are lauded as beautiful women are now Ugly Losers. And since they are now Ugly Losers (wearing an XL t shirt) they have carte Blanche to say I may be an ugly gay loser but I’m not THAT much of an ugly gay loser I would NEVER be enough of an ugly gay loser to stoop to dating OTHER ugly gay losers. It’s like. It is straight up identical to characterizations in a movie about two teen boys. It’s very much Oh lesbians and straight men are the exact same haha. They like women in the exact same way and act exactly the same. They’re lesbians but besides Josie’s white suit joke and lavender marriage rant there’s. No consistent work put in that makes you laugh and go oh yeah those are LESBIAN lesbians those are DYKES. I’m thinking a lot about booksmart and how when you saw the girl the lesbian had a crush on you were like. Oh yeah of course. Of course! I understand perfectly.
I can’t get over how much it feels like it was plotted and written for like. A 48 hour challenge or something. It’s so jumpy and directionless and not at all interested in even the semblance of substance or cohesion.
This is a marketing issue not necessarily a movie issue but. The two main things Marketing the movie. The snippet about fight club for girls. Which is one movie. And the poster. Which is a different movie. And then the movie you watch. Which is neither of those movies. It’s neither of those movies and it’s not even booksmart or superbad.
This is a mashup of the last two points but this movie has no idea what it wants to be. It knows where it’s set. It does a wonderful job of creating the world it’s in with costuming and setting. But it has no idea what it wants to be. Or where it’s going. Or who any of the people in it are. If any one aspect was seized upon and fleshed out even a little bit I could forgive all my other criticisms. When there was the fight scene at the end I was like wait this rules why did they only do this one other time in the movie. It feels like there could have been more fighting in my fight club movie. When pj and Josie were having Intrapersonal Drama. I was like. Yeah I would watch this if there was more of it. But there wasn’t. When they were actually for real flirting with the cheerleaders. I was like yeah this is fun I would watch more of this. When the oddball background characters were being friends for real. I was like yeah this rules. And we saw it once or twice. every aspect of the movie had like. A scene and a half. An entire runtime made up of scenes and a halfs.
I would like to let the record show that I went in very open minded expecting a movie where girls said fuck and sex. That was my only expectation. And it was Met. And after I watched it. I went oooooh that first viewing was not so good perhaps the second will be different. I gave liking this movie the good ol’ college try. I thought it had a Stellar first fifteen. From the opening to the ride home I was like oh this movie is gonna rule. Anyway. That’s my Thoughts On Bottoms.

All LGBTQIA+ Sing Characters Headcanons
Out of all 63 canon characters that we actually get to know a bit about, I headcanon 55 of them are LGBTQIA+. Why? One, why not, two, they told me themselves, and three... this is legitimately a franchise about theatre kids, of course majority are gonna be fruity.
Anyways, here we go!
---------------------------------
Meena Amari - Bisexual Trans Woman (She/Her)
- publicly came out two years before Sing 1 and her family was extremely supportive
- was a member of a LGBTQ+ support club when she was in school
Darius Andeno - Unlabled (He/Him)
- honestly just never has tried to labeled his sexuality and is too lazy to start now
- dating Harry for around a year and a half at the time of Sing 2
Hobbs Atene - Omnisexual (He/Him)
- happily married to his spouse with three kids
- was the first person Eddie ever came out to as a kid
Ash Batalla - Bisexual Demi-Girl (She/They)
- came out to her bio family as a teenager which went horribly
- has coached several others in the troupe through identity crises
Mike Bianchi - Biromantic (He/Him)
- so deep in the closet that he’s in Narnia at this point
- legit thinks everyone is like this she is wrong)
Nancy Bianchi - Graysexual (She/Her)
- didn’t really understand her own identity until she started doing research in case her future kid/s came out
- also legit thought everyone is like this (she was also wrong)
Clay Calloway - Bisexual Trans Masc (He/They)
- one of the first public LGBTQ+ rockstars
- has gotten into fights protecting queer fans from protestors
Ruby Calloway - Pansexual Trans Woman (She/Her)
- she and Clay are the og T4T couple in this series
- worked as a marketing agent almost exclusively with young queer artists
Jimmy Crystal - Bisexual (He/Him)
- tied with Mike for the character with the most internalized homophobia
- was the only one at Crystal Entertainment to not know about Jerry’s crush
Porsha Crystal - Gender Questioning Pansexual (She/Her)
- came out as a younger teenager to her dad’s bodyguards first as “practice”
- started questioning her gender during the Majestic run of Out of This World
Barry Frost - Bisexual (He/Him)
- was outed as a young teenager and was bullied a lot
- he was the first of the gang to realize that Johnny was queer
Norman Harrison - Biromantic (He/Him)
- he and Rosita both came out in college and to each other first
- pan4bi Rosita and Norman is so important to me idk
Gunter Järvinen - Aromantic Homosexual Trans Man (He/Him)
- came out as a kid and transitioned before moving to the US
- genuinely gets confused and slightly worried when someone tries to describe romantic attraction to him
Klaus Kickenclobber - Gay (He/Him)
- been out for years
- that’s all you’re getting because that’s all I thought of
Suki Lane - AroAce (She/Her)
- realized she was AroAce as a teen but just didn’t come out for a few years due to her family not being accepting
- when she did come out, her honorary cousins pointed out that she dressed like the AroAce flag, which they found way funnier than she did
Buster Moon - Gay Trans Man (He/Him)
- he came out as a young kid and his dad was super supportive
- has been dating Eddie since university
Charley Moon (Buster’s Dad) - Greyromantic (He/Him)
- did not realize he was greyromantic til he was in his 50s
- another prime example of “but everyone’s like this”
Eddie Noodleman - Bisexual (He/Him)
- came out to his family as a university student after coming out to Hobbs as a teen
- legit flipped a coin with Buster to see who would propose
Nana Noodleman - Asexual Lesbian (She/Her)
- she was pretty open with her identity her entire career and was well known for not taking any kind of harassment at her shows
- adopted her daughter on her own in her 40s
Harry Ocheing - Intersex Gay (They/He)
- came out as a kid to their siblings
- super supportive of other performers when they come out
Nooshy Peart - Genderfluid Lesbian (They/She)
- came out as a teenager and left home right after, bit is still in contact with her siblings who are supportive
- Marcus was the first supportive parent they ever had
Rosita Pèrez-Harrison - Pansexual (She/Her)
- came out to her college friends before anyone else
- buys all the troupe pride gear if they want or need any
Stan Phillips - Unlabled (He/Him)
- decidedly unlabeled and happy about it
- he protected Barry from bullies when they were kids, which is how they met
Alfonso Romano-Hassan - Biromantic (He/Him)
- did not realize he was biromantic until talking to Meena about her being bi a few months into dating
- the creator of bi wife energy lets be honest
Mizuki Satō - Nonbinary Lesbian (They/She)
- moved states away from their family after coming out in their twenties
- she has a long term girlfriend of three years
Jerry Swell - Gay (He/Him)
- came out in his late 20s
- had a crush on his boss since he started working for him
Johnny Taylor - Gay Demi-Boy (He/They)
- came out to his family a few months before Sing 2 despite the closet being made of glass with no doors for years
- found out that he was legit the last person to know he was gay out of his entire family
Marcus Taylor - Demisexual (He/Him)
- figured out that he was demisexual after researching how to be more supportive of Johnny
- married an omnisexual woman and was a very vocal ally since he was a teen
Ryan Willis - Gay (He/Him)
- came out to his moms as a really young kid and legit forgot about it until he tried to come out years later and they just said that they knew already
- had a crush on Johnny since meeting him but actually hid it for several months pretty well
Garry Wishmann - Asexual Trans Man (He/Him)
- came out in his late teens
- owns a ton of pun centered asexual shirts

As an older Gen Z past my teenage years I’ve noticed that younger people in my generation are…. Weirdly conservative?? And puritanical?? And love to police what grown adults are into sexually even when there’s zero things wrong with it (which is ironic, because there was this whole ordeal about teens on TikTok getting into “hardcore” kinks too early and bragging about being into choking or biting).
I guess it’s just the generational need teens have to feel superior and better than adults. It’s really annoying tbh.
You know, I've been reading a book called "A Renegade History of the United States" and one of the book's themes is that respectability politics aren't what got shit done and aren't what made the US such a free place. It was the whores, the bootleggers, the punks, the unashamed lispy flaming gays and stone butch lesbians, the "bad" people proving stereotypes "right", and the degenerates who made shit happen.
(Me making a rambling Pepe Silvia-esque corkboard about internet bullshit below)
What was considered degenerate and banned by respectable people (ie. Rock and roll music in the 1950s, American music and film in Soviet countries) was what pushed members of society to fight back against those respectable people: essentially, "fuck you, we're gonna listen to Elvis because this music is fun and so is dancing at clubs, drinking, and dressing like a thot."
Anyway, I bring this up because there's always a faction of people that desperately want to stamp out anything not respectable, anything ~problematic~ If I were to draw a parallel to fandom bullshit, I'd bring up the puritanical sides of fandoms on places like Tiktok that you've described and how they try to stop anyone from creating and enjoying weird degenerate shit. If you want to go really reach for straws, you could say this may stem from a very American mindset of puritanical values. The founding fathers hated how much people in their day spent time drinking and fucking prostitutes and gambling; ethnic groups like the Irish and Italian rose to "white" status by major influential leaders pushing for a sober and very religiously conservative lifestyle; the original groups behind the gay rights movement in the US insisting that no drag queens, no overtly feminine "swishy" gay men, and no butch lesbians could be in their movement for PR purposes; Martin Luther King Jr., Malcom X, and their political descendants like Jesse Jackson staunchly advocating against idleness and sexuality in order to be seen as respectable American citizens.
You can argue this emphasis on being seen as nonproblematic as possible, and enjoying nonproblematic things in as nonproblematic a way as possible, is a 21st century online extension of this long-lasting American mindset when it comes to morality and immorality.
Personally, I don't think minors should be consuming sexual content and ESPECIALLY not porn. It's just something not made for them; they're so mentally and emotionally underdeveloped that they can't understand that sex isn't at all what porn's idealized and hyperfantasized portrayal of it is. It's why they commonly develop body image issues (when they already struggle with that thanks to social media anyway, thus adding fuel to the fire), why they feel pressured to talk about sex as often because they think everyone expects them to be sexualized, and why some feel pressured to be okay with kinks and sexual acts with a partner even if they don't want to. And, regarding your ask, some push back against that oversexualization by shunning and rejecting anything they consider too sexual or sexually 'problematic', 'toxic', or impure (aka: sinful)
But that doesn't mean these teens who are having to deal with these issues have the right to barge into a space explicitly meant to exclude them. If you're living in this century, you NEED to learn how to create your own experience online without flinging shit at others who have their own curated experience. Staying in your lane is something you teach teens in driver's ed, but it applies to a lot of other aspects of life too 🤷‍♀️

Nominating Baby Teeth as the most tragic character on Riverdale ever.  He’s either an orphan or completely alienated from his family, incarcerated as a teen, forced into fighting for the L&L child exploitation fight club ring, really has no choice but to join in on the ill conceived raid on the Gargoyles by the Serpents (which is really a proxy Elektra complex battle between Jughead and his mother because Jughead is lesbian coded).  He dies from blood loss by having his teeth pulled without anesthesia and to top everything else, Jughead munches potato chips while looking at his mutilated corpse on the forest floor.  He deserved better.

Most Anticipated Reads in April
It’s almost but not quite April yet, which means it’s time for me to totally ignore the books I should be reading from March and look ahead to my most anticipated April reads. Here’s what’s on my list...
A Whole Song and Dance by Sarvenaz Tash [Out 4/4/23!]
Nasrin Mahdavi is a Broadway triple threat—but she’s living a double life. A freshman in NYU’s prestigious musical theater program, Nasrin spends her days prepping for auditions, sweating through dance classes, and belting her heart out for the viral streaming show she’s been cast in. But on calls with her maman and baba, she’s their jigar talah, the golden child who put her theater dreams aside to follow in their entrepreneurial footsteps as a business major. At least her whole life isn’t a lie—she is taking a single business course. Except she’s kind of failing it. Cue jazz hands? Nasrin needs to bring her grade up fast if she’s going to keep her parents in the dark, so she grudgingly signs up for tutoring with the infuriatingly smug and annoyingly attractive Max. And yet...as the semester rushes by, the sparks of anger that first flew between them start to turn into a very different kind of spark. The kind she definitely does not have time for. Except when Nasrin’s charming though devious cousin takes an interest in Max too, Nasrin has to figure out exactly what has been an act—and what’s for real. Can Nasrin decide what—and who—is truly worth fighting for, and find a way to step into the spotlight as her full self?
Firebird by Sunmi [Out 4/4/23!]
Sunmi's gorgeous two-color teen graphic novel debut examines the power of resilience and reinvention, following the lives of Caroline and Kim, two queer, Asian American teenagers growing up in the suburbs of the San Francisco Bay Area, as they forge an unexpected connection. Caroline Kim is feeling the weight of sophomore year. When she starts tutoring infamous senior Kimberly Park-Ocampo--a charismatic lesbian, friend to rich kids and punks alike--Caroline is flustered... but intrigued. Their friendship kindles and before they know it, the two are sneaking out for late-night drives, bonding beneath the stars over music, dreams, and a shared desire of getting away from it all. A connection begins to smolder... but will feelings of guilt and the mounting pressure of life outside of these adventures extinguish their spark before it catches fire?
Throwback by Maurene Goo [Out 4/11/2023!]
Back to the Future meets The Joy Luck Club in this YA contemporary romance about a Korean American girl sent back to the ’90s to (reluctantly) help her teenage mom win Homecoming Queen. Being a first-generation Asian American immigrant is hard. You know what’s harder? Being the daughter of one. Samantha Kang has never gotten along with her mother, Priscilla—and has never understood her bougie-nightmare, John Hughes high school expectations. After a huge fight between them, Sam is desperate to move forward—but instead, finds herself thrown back. Way back. To her shock, Sam finds herself back in high school . . . in the ’90s . . . with a 17-year-old Priscilla. Now this Gen Z girl must try to fit into an analog world. She’s got the fashion down, but everything else is baffling. What is “microfiche”? What’s with the casual racism and misogyny? And why does it feel like Priscilla is someone she could actually be . . . friends with? Sam's blast to the past has her finding the right romance in the wrong time while questioning everything she thought she knew about her mom . . . and herself. Will Sam figure out what she needs to do to fix things for her mom so that she can go back to a time she understands? Brimming with heart and humor, Maurene Goo’s time-travel romance asks big questions about what exactly one inherits and loses in the immigrant experience.

Saw Barbie. Good movie, if a bit muddled in its metaphors and metaphysics. Thoughts:
All of the trailers beforehand were for films based on existing IP (Hunger Games prequel, The Color Purple remake, another My Big Fat Greek Wedding sequel, Haunted Mansion, an adaptation of a book by the author of Wonder, Barbie itself, and of course the obligatory Marvel movie) with the exception of the local theater's classic film feature (which featured Goonies and Legally Blonde as well as the LotR extended editions) and a movie about lesbians who start a fight club to get laid which I'd describe as "made for tumblr" if it wasn't also a teen sex comedy and therefore likely to earn the opprobrium of a significant portion of the userbase on those grounds alone. A rather dismal state of affairs (especially given that two of the trailers doubled as insurance commercials), although I'll admit that the Hunger Games prequel had some cool set design.
The situation of the Kens is so weird. During their revolution they act the part of patriarchal oppressors, and are fought (and made fun of) accordingly, but they're also a marginalized group with genuine and sympathetic grievances whose position is explicitly compared to that of women in the real world.
Ken (Ryan Gosling)'s portrayal in particular was surprisingly sympathetic tbh. With a movie as committed to being feminist as this one, I wasn't expecting it to be so willing to turn a sympathetic eye to the frustrations and feelings of powerlessness that lead to the radicalization of so many real men into misogyny. It's so easy to imagine a version of this movie where Ken is a flat villain driven solely by male entitlement who is sympathetic only by accident (it's probably the one we would've got had this been made in 2014) and I'm glad it's not the one we got.
Was surprised and delighted to see Magic Earring Ken, although I'm forced to deduct points for the bowdlerization of his necklace (although I'll give some back for including the original in the credits).
Did not expect America Ferrera to have a husband, I thought for sure she was going to be a single mother. Very funny that his schtick was being a Duolingo guy though.
Expected top AO3 pairings: Barbie/America Ferrera, Ken (Ryan Gosling)/Ken (Simu Liu).

What do you mean by the emotional beats in Bottoms? Are you referring to the film's tone or its portrayal of relationships?
Both, it was the falling action of the movie so when everyone finds out that they didn't go to juvie and just started the club to sleep with cheerleaders and Isabel calls Josie pathetic and Josie and PJ have their fight and Josie is all do you care about anyone but yourself etc. that didn't work for me because the movie doesn't really get into character that much, like I don't know any of these characters for any of that to really matter, for any of that to feel like it was necessary. I don't really know Josie and PJ's friendship to care that they have a fight, it's not Seth and Evan arguing in the middle of the road after running away from a house party full of cokeheads who pulled a gun on them and made them sing (which was hilarious) but while the plot of Superbad is Seth and Evan trying to buy alcohol to impress and potentially have sex with their crushes, at its core the movie is about Seth and Evan's friendship so the falling action means something. Here, I was like it's a movie that subverts the status quo in raunchy teen dramas like Superbad in having two lesbians as the leads, it satirizes the teen drama itself, it makes glib, surface-level commentary on feminism and allyship and that's all fun and that's all good but I don't find it to be a character-based movie or an emotional movie so the falling action part of the movie had me like I don't care that the relationships are fractured when there isn't much time actually spent on the relationships.
