Simple Layered Salad
Sometimes I not in the mood to put much effort into lunch or dinner, there's nothing made ahead (surprise!) so what to do I ask myself. One of my fall backs is a layered salad. It's just romaine lettuce sliced thin, cottage cheese, fruit - pears, cantaloupe, berries, topped with sunflower seeds or what ever seed variety is to hand. Stack it up, grasp your fork and dig in. A healthy meal with little to no effort. Tip - the romaine and fruit can come already bagged/chopped so there is not even that chore for you - nice!
Romaine greens, sliced thin across the leaves
1 c.+ cottage cheese
1 - 2 pears, cored, sliced with skins
1/2 c.+ sunflower seeds
On a dinner plate, layer romaine, cottage cheese, pears, sunflower seeds to then grab up your fork and enjoy! Yes, it can be just that easy to make a healthy meal for yourself with little effort...sounds good to me and it is.
When I'm not gamboling up the stairs to throw together a healthy meal, I'm sewing cotton pocket aprons for my online shop - www.etsy.com/shop/topdrawerthreads .
Or I'm putting the finishing touches on hand crafted throw rugs torn from upcycled recycled thrifted cotton sheets which are then crocheted into round and oval throw rugs for my other online shop - www.etsy.com/shop/topdraweryarns .
My daughter's have an online shop - www.etsy.com.shop/yesdesigns - where they design and sew cotton pocket knickers to wear for leisure, fun, or frolicking occasions.
My older daughter has an online shop - www.etsy.com/shop/wildwovenwomen - where she works upcycled recycled thrifted yarns into brightly striped afghans to curl up into on those summer evenings you just want to sit outside and enjoy the starlight.

Well, a mixed bag on the blood test this time. Some improvement in Cholesterol numbers, but no improvement in Hemoglobin A1c, which is really annoying, given how few times I went off Low Carb and had a treat in the last few months... like 2 or 3x, IN 6 MONTHS! So annoying.
I looked back at tests from 2017, when I was working out more frequently and weighed less, and the A1c was about 5.3, so it never has been super low. Does it get super low? I don't know. I'm going to have to do more research on it.
I have a DR appt tomorrow to go over all this, so we'll see what they have to say about it all. These doctors haven't been as asshole-y as some I've had, so hopefully they will have something useful to say.
I really don't want to go on more meds; I'd like to get off the BP meds I'm already on, but that isn't in the cards at this point either.
Sigh.

Oh hey did u kno a1c (the way blood sugar over time is measured and a diabetes diagnostic) isn’t a number in isolation, it’s specifically in relation to hemoglobin (which is why it’s also called hba1c) and the numbers can be fucked up by anemia?
Anyway I’m going to try to put together an actual for reals study because I am mad as all hell, but poll time!!

Finally, A Health Check
Friday the 13th’s blood sugar dropped a few points to 169. Our appointments with the new PCP are today, so I hope there is some correction to this course in the near future.
It was a bit foggy first thing this morning. We could not even see the hills to the south of us, and for a little while we thought the fog would envelop the neighborhood. It began lifting not long before 10 a.m. and the sun came out to warm things up. A little. The forecast high for today was only 74 degrees.
After the usual coffee and brain games and a protein drink, Nancy and I went out for a two-mile walk that included a circuit of the magnolia garden. We showered once we were done walking, and then we made brioche breakfast sandwiches. Nancy used one of the leftover sausage patties from the other day for her sandwich. I went with deli ham slices.
Our appointments with the new PCP were at 1:40 and 2:40 p.m., but we were allowed to go in together. The check-in was well done, the assistant who took our vitals and gave us our flu shots was very nice, and the Nurse Practitioner was great. It was a relief to finally check in with a medical professional after being here for more than four months.
Thankfully, the scripts for the meds I needed managed to get filled before the pharmacy in our neighborhood closed for the weekend. I’m back on the Metformin twice a day, so I hope that has an effect on the blood sugar. Because my A1C is 10.7, which is way above normal, even for someone with diabetes.
For dinner we had a little bit of salad and some more leftover enchilada casserole, slathered in sour cream, followed by a couple of pieces of watermelon over the course of the next hour or so.
I headed out for another two-mile walk after we cleaned up from dinner. Nancy opted out, since she was feeling a little tired from the flu shot she received today. I also got a flu shot and a pneumonia vaccine, but there were no repercussions other than a tiny bit of pain at the injection spots.
We were going to go out to Marcola to play Scrabble with some of the Grange folks tonight, but Nancy’s flu shot reaction also changed those plans. We stayed home, watched some TV, including Colbert, the first episode of the second series of “The Old Man,” starring Jeff Bridges, and an episode of a comedy titled “How to Die Alone.”
In the meantime, my sister Deborah is driving from Virginia to Tucson with my ex-wife Beth in a car her father gave her. It’s a 20-year-old Mustang and previously belonged to Beth’s late brother. It only has 150,000 miles on it. They made it to Charlotte today and are headed for Nashville tomorrow. They will eventually be going through Dallas to see our brother Thaddeus. We’re not sure what else is on their itinerary, but we hope to find out all about it on social media.

Healthy A1c
Being 52, I realize how important it is to be healthy. Right now, all I’m trying to do is lose a few pounds and bring my A1c down. But since I’ve cut out some of the sugar, my hot flashes have become a little more bearable. I also started taking Amberen and it seems to help a lot. I was on Estroven for months and it really didn’t do much. I’m so thankful I switched! It seems like so much is…

Not sure if I will actually save money but definitely trying to save some hassle. I currently have lab appointments on April 18, April 25 and May 6. Have e-mailed my various doctors to see if there is anyway my primary doctor can just have everything drawn once on April 18 and shared.
**crosses fingers**
This happened last year around same time and I ended up having two labs in one week and one the following week. I was a sad sad puppy.

Most Recent Doctor Visit
I am in the doctor’s office for my 6-month check-up. My BP was a little elevated. I’m waiting for my a1c test result. My guess is around 6.5. I did a home test the other day. There is no telling how high it had been before I got myself under control. I went off the deep end during Thanksgiving and Christmas. My a1c ended up being 5.8. Woo hoo! In the last day or so, I have come to terms with…

it amazes me the amount of people with type 1 diabetes who don’t understand that we also can deal with mental health issues and that yes somtimes it does feel like rocket science. like bro no it’s not “motivation enough” for my top surgery to get my a1c down, you think i don’t want to, i was talking about how it’s really hard and i don’t know what to do anymore so like stfu you 78 yr/old man with type 2 how about you shut your mouth if you don’t understand, like you stated in the comment. god i hate reddit somtimes
