Being with a family that likes to pretend my very concerning chronic health symptoms don’t exist is genuinely horrifying. It makes me question what I am experiencing in my own body. My body is screaming that something is not right. Anyway, time to get that A1C test.

Simple Layered Salad
Sometimes I not in the mood to put much effort into lunch or dinner, there's nothing made ahead (surprise!) so what to do I ask myself. One of my fall backs is a layered salad. It's just romaine lettuce sliced thin, cottage cheese, fruit - pears, cantaloupe, berries, topped with sunflower seeds or what ever seed variety is to hand. Stack it up, grasp your fork and dig in. A healthy meal with little to no effort. Tip - the romaine and fruit can come already bagged/chopped so there is not even that chore for you - nice!
Romaine greens, sliced thin across the leaves
1 c.+ cottage cheese
1 - 2 pears, cored, sliced with skins
1/2 c.+ sunflower seeds
On a dinner plate, layer romaine, cottage cheese, pears, sunflower seeds to then grab up your fork and enjoy! Yes, it can be just that easy to make a healthy meal for yourself with little effort...sounds good to me and it is.
When I'm not gamboling up the stairs to throw together a healthy meal, I'm sewing cotton pocket aprons for my online shop - www.etsy.com/shop/topdrawerthreads .
Or I'm putting the finishing touches on hand crafted throw rugs torn from upcycled recycled thrifted cotton sheets which are then crocheted into round and oval throw rugs for my other online shop - www.etsy.com/shop/topdraweryarns .
My daughter's have an online shop - www.etsy.com.shop/yesdesigns - where they design and sew cotton pocket knickers to wear for leisure, fun, or frolicking occasions.
My older daughter has an online shop - www.etsy.com/shop/wildwovenwomen - where she works upcycled recycled thrifted yarns into brightly striped afghans to curl up into on those summer evenings you just want to sit outside and enjoy the starlight.

Diabetes Under Control
One week from today it will be Christmas Day. There is actual blue sky showing through the clouds this morning. No fog to be seen. And no rain in the forecast.
My blood sugar bumped up a few points, to 147. My A1C results came in overnight: 6.8. For someone with diabetes, a value under 7% indicates their diabetes is well controlled. I got a call before 9 a.m. from the PCP’s office to let me know the results. They confirmed that I’m doing a good job controlling my diabetes. So did the diabetes care specialist who called a little bit later.
After having our coffee and doing the usual brain games, we headed down to Creswell for more sourdough bread as well as the chipotle ham brioche breakfast sandwiches. Then we returned to Down to Earth for some non-garden shopping, followed by a mocha from the Farmers Union Coffee Roasters to go with the gingerbread muffin we had also bought at the Creswell Bakery. After that, we went by Rooted Remedies so Nancy to pick up some more things.
Once we got home we took a bit of a nap. Then we started out on a walk together. Nancy made it 1.55 miles. I finished the walk with a total of 4.91 miles in an hour and 37 minutes. The average pace was 19:45 per mile and I walked 10,900 steps.
We reserved a spot at Onsen for some hot tub time. Starting a little before 5 p.m. we soaked for a good 45 minutes. We stopped by Mezza Luna in downtown Springfield on the way home for a couple of slices of pizza.
Our streaming for the evening started with Colbert’s Tuesday night show, with guests Elton John and Brandi Carlile. Elton has long been a favorite of mine, starting with his self-named album and continuing through “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.” Brandi first came to my attention with her debut album in 2005, and I continue to be enthralled by her work. It was fun to see them together and to hear about the relationship that has developed between the families of the two musicians.
We followed Colbert with the eleventh episode of the current “Shrinking” season and wrapped up the evening with the final story in the third series of “Dalgliesh.” We have already learned that there will be another series of “Shrinking” on the way. I hope there will be more of “Dalgliesh” as well.

Went to my doctor yesterday
I haven’t been feeling well this entire month after having that cold the last week of September. My body just hurts constantly, whether I stretch or not, workout or not. My joints hurt, my neck is on fire all the time. And I’ve been having annoying headaches that don’t go away with medications. I’ve also gotten so tired randomly throughout the day, like cannot keep my eyes open tired. I was thinking my vitamin D might be low again.
The NP I saw was so nice and listened to me. We discussed and both agreed I’m likely stressed and not realizing it so my body is displaying the overloading stress I have. Cause really if you asked me I’d say “psh no I’m not stressed I’m perfectly fine.” Except I’m not apparently.
So I got some labs done. When I was at the lab the nurse notified me that there was an order my pcp had put in probably in the summer when I saw her about my neck pain. I didn’t know about the order though, so the nurse asked if I wanted to do that now as well. I said sure, not knowing what the labs were.
Turns out it was to retest my A1c. And lo and behold it has gone up. From 5.7 in March to now 6.0.
I really thought I was doing better with my health. I’ve lost some weight, I’ve stopped eating out a ton, I’m cooking at home more and healthier meals. I don’t understand 🥹. This is going to stress me out even more.

I wish this was accurate, but my sensor has been a little wonky. Would be so fucking cool though. 2 more months before another a1c check.

Well, a mixed bag on the blood test this time. Some improvement in Cholesterol numbers, but no improvement in Hemoglobin A1c, which is really annoying, given how few times I went off Low Carb and had a treat in the last few months... like 2 or 3x, IN 6 MONTHS! So annoying.
I looked back at tests from 2017, when I was working out more frequently and weighed less, and the A1c was about 5.3, so it never has been super low. Does it get super low? I don't know. I'm going to have to do more research on it.
I have a DR appt tomorrow to go over all this, so we'll see what they have to say about it all. These doctors haven't been as asshole-y as some I've had, so hopefully they will have something useful to say.
I really don't want to go on more meds; I'd like to get off the BP meds I'm already on, but that isn't in the cards at this point either.
Sigh.

Oh hey did u kno a1c (the way blood sugar over time is measured and a diabetes diagnostic) isn’t a number in isolation, it’s specifically in relation to hemoglobin (which is why it’s also called hba1c) and the numbers can be fucked up by anemia?
Anyway I’m going to try to put together an actual for reals study because I am mad as all hell, but poll time!!
#diabetes#a1c#anemia#anemic#health#weight is a super shitty measure of health#diabetes has been declared an epidemic#I am incredibly suspicious though at not testing the iron#it’s a goddamn ratio#you need to know what the denominator is#and theoretically this is health and not my field#but tbh fuck everyone#this is a policy problem#and therefore my field#especially if you’re calling diabetes an epidemic#that makes it emergency management policy related#and therefore entirely my wheelhouse#now that I’m not taking Metformin anymore I has sufficient rage to follow this thread all the way to policies on blood tests

Mounjaro, semaglutide
My A1C is high (6.6)
Taking metformin hasn't lowered it
Nurse practitioner recommended continuing the metformin
Nurse practitioner recommended also starting Mounjaro and taking it for 3 months
Health insurance won't pay for Mounjaro
So I'm starting on compounded semaglutide from an Aesthetics & Wellness (beauty) place that my mother recommended
I was wary of the beauty place at first
because I've had negative experiences such as asking for product suggestions at the beauty counter at the mall and they pointed out flaws in my skin that I didn't even know I had :(
But when I told the lady at Aesthetics & Wellness that I want to take semaglutide to lower my A1C (and not for "beauty" purposes)
She was totally on board with that and only talked about the medication in terms of how it works with the digestive system to lower A1C
Yay!
It turns out she also works at the hospital, so she understands healthcare
Anyway I did my first injection on 4/22/2025
Current A1C: 6.6
Current age: 44
Current appetite: as usual
Current side effects: none so far
Mostly I am posting this for the sake of one mutual who is thinking of starting Mounjaro and wants to know about other people's experiences with it
But I figure it might be of interest to other people too

Checking My Health
This morning’s low was 44 degrees, and the high reached 56. The rain had been forecast to start in the evening, but it did not show up by bedtime.
My blood sugar was within a point of being bold and red on my daily chart today, at 159. Nancy and I had our coffee and managed to play a couple of our brain games before I had to take off for my PCP appointment.
PeaceHealth’s Barger clinic location is all the way on the other side of Eugene, but thanks to the highways that run through the area, it only took me about twenty minutes to get all the way there from home.
My A1C was 7.2, up slightly due to the steroid eye drops after my cataract surgery and the decrease in walking thanks to the arthritis in my left foot. My blood pressure was 128/70, closer to normal than it has been in a good while. Appointments were made for next the diabetes followup in June and my Annual Wellness Check in September. In the meantime, I’ll be visiting the lab for more blood work.
When I got home, Nancy had oatmeal prepared for our breakfast. After eating, we finished brain games, including On the Record, which is evidently still available without a subscription to WaPo. As long as we’re not paying for it, we’ll keep playing.
We spent a couple of hours doing various chores, and then, after napping for about an hour, we had sandwiches and potato chips for lunch.
Then Nancy and I went to Jasper Road Trailhead and walked the Mill Race Path down to the Middle Fork Path and back, taking our time and taking pictures, plus wandering down a side path briefly. We did 1.68 miles over a period of almost 48 minutes, for a total of 4,200 steps.
Before heading home, we went by the Rusty Porch to grab a bar of soap and then spent a few minutes wandering the crowded aisles of the Time Travelers Antique Mall another block away. My friend Henry has talked about it a couple of times. He bought vintage postcards and old CDs from them. There was an amazing amount of junk there, not much of which truly interested us.
More time passed before we put together a simple meal of leftover tomato soup, grilled cheese sandwiches, and a small salad. We ate about 5:45 p.m., so we could be done in time for me to head out for the Tuesday men’s recovery meeting.
I got selected to lead the meeting, but we did a long reading about the Sixth Step, so I did not have to do any sharing myself. I simply opened the meeting to sharing once we were done. A couple of shares mentioned the lists of character defects that can be found on the internet these days. One quick list that turned up when I got home and checked includes 194, ranging from abuse to worry.
We jumped into streaming once I made it home. We started with Colbert’s Monday evening show, with guest Cate Blanchett. Peter Frampton sat in with the band. We closed with the latest episode of “Death in Paradise,” in which the owner of a rum distillery is killed while finalizing a deal to sell his business. Or so it seemed. DI Mervin Wilson also took time to learn more about his late mother’s life on the island, while other members of the squad started working to save Commissioner Patterson’s job.
The rain is supposed to start around 2 a.m. tonight and last through most of the day tomorrow. The low will get down to 44 degrees and tomorrow’s high might get to 56. If the rain does fall all day, we will most likely be spending all our time at home. Unless we break out our rain gear.

So my A1C is back to a pre-diabetic borderline diabetic range of 6.2.
I never should have stopped the metformin but my PCP insisted back in April after my bout of pancreatitis because of the hypoglycemic episodes. I should have just lowered my dosage. But nope I was taken off it and now my A1C is the worse it's been in like 4 years. This is a nightmare.
Diabetes type 1 and 2 runs in my family on both sides. This is not good.
Hopefully I can get this sorted.

Healthy A1c
Being 52, I realize how important it is to be healthy. Right now, all I’m trying to do is lose a few pounds and bring my A1c down. But since I’ve cut out some of the sugar, my hot flashes have become a little more bearable. I also started taking Amberen and it seems to help a lot. I was on Estroven for months and it really didn’t do much. I’m so thankful I switched! It seems like so much is…
