Where nmj in rut will get overly anxious if jc even as much as leave his sight, even to go to their room to get something without him. Something in his gits simply cannot stop worrying, he /has/ to make sure his mate will be alright.

So he follows jc around the apartment all day long, hands nearly always on him. if jc is making them some food he'll be behind him hugging and looking over his shoulder, whispering to be careful (and keeping himself from taking the knife, knowing his mate would be angry if he fully kept him from doing things around the house).

and jc tried to find a solution so nmj wouldn't necessarily need to get out of the house without him when in rut. He tried having him on the phone as he did grocery and even face timing!!

but all it managed to do was have nmj run out the apartment not even five minutes after he got out in the phone call and nmj sprinted directly to the store he was at when he caught sight of other alphas looking at his mate.

so jc has simply accepted having nmj sticking to him closely when they are out for things they need. He usually try to have what they need, but sometimes they are missing things and he needs to go out.

what he won't complain about is that no one is bothering him when nmj is around, chasing away literally any alpha who even just glances in their direction (not that nmj scenting him excessively doesn't do the job in the first place).

Where jc needs to put his foot down is when he needs to go to work. He has no choice but to go and nmj cannot just scare away every colleague he has. He will face time him on breaks, reassuring him that /yes/ he is doing alright. No, no one has tried to hit on him (as if any alpha who has seen nmj would even /try/).

Sometimes jc thinks of how unimpressed some would be. nmj is pretty tall, large and strong, even by alpha general standards. He can even be scary-looking (jc did find him scary when he was younger).

Sophomore year the administration had tried to exert some type of control over them by putting the three of them all in different lunch periods.

That had resulted in two of them cutting a class every single day so they could all have lunch together. Xichen either missed study hall or band, neither of which required his attendance and so his uncle was only moderately apocalyptic about him missing, and the only person Mingjue had to answer to was his cousin, who frankly didn’t give a shit, so skipping class was easy for him too. Wei Wuxian had the worst of it, because while he could ace statistics and chemistry in his sleep, Aunt Yu took every excuse possible to punish him and Uncle Jiang could only redirect her so many times.

Both Xichen and Mingjue had just offered to come to his lunch permanently, but that wasn’t fair and it wasn’t like Lan Qiren wasn’t punishing Xichen, he just wasn’t being as vindictive about it. So they took turns.

Not having lunch together wasn’t an option because that meant letting the administration win and that was unacceptable. The next semester they’d put them all in the same lunch, accepting that they actually caused less trouble that way, and had done so ever since, so it was a battle well won.

“Do you think this is a bribe?” Wei Wuxian asks as they sit at their customary table under the oak tree. They’d gotten into two physical fights and one prank war to claim it freshman year from the seniors, which may or may not be when the rumors about them first started. “Putting us in the same lunch as our brothers.”

“It’s probably just saving them a headache,” Xichen answers, taking out his healthy lunch that he brought from home. Wei Wuxian snags it to start distributing the rice and pickled vegetables between him and Mingjue’s plate and Mingjue leans over to dumb the cheese sticks and questionable meat loaf from their plates onto Xichen’s.

Lan Qiren is convinced that school lunches are filled with plastic and poison and pesticides. Which is probably accurate, but it still tastes better than pickled vegetables. Most days.

“Someone warned me against sitting here,” Nie Huaisang complains as he slams is tray down. “Which means now I’m required to have lunch with you in order to gain some extremely dubious street cred.”

“I’m only here because Nie Huaisang is,” Jiang Cheng says, even though he sits across from Wei Wuxian at the opposite end of the table. “Don’t get used to it.”

Wen Qing has this lunch period too, but she always spends it in the lab. Maybe he can entice her to eat lunch sometimes, because Jiang Cheng will definitely sit with them then.

“Hello,” Xichen’s extremely hot brother says as he sits down. He has an identical lunch box to Xichen’s, except he apparently eats all of his himself. That’s deranged. He’s lucky he’s so beautiful because it makes up for the pressed khakis and awful food choices.

It’s a tragedy that A-jie has the lunch after them, especially because it’s the same one that the Jin degenerates have. Wen Ning has that one too, but he’s not much protection.

“Can we beat up Jin Zixuan?” he asks.

“Yes,” Jiang Cheng, Mingjue, and Nie Huaisang all say at once.

Xichen sighs. “Can we at least have a good reason first?”

Lan Xichen knew from the start that Jiang Cheng was ace and he was happy with it. But he was still horny and had his needs.

cue them working together to a middle ground once jc finished working on some of his own confidence issues: lxc can sleep with people as long as theirs no strings attached. He can feel alright with lxc finding a sexual partner, but this is where it has to end (as if a lxc would fall for someone else). Sometimes he can find himself in the mood to do some things with lxc, as the touch of his boyfriend isn't something he hates, he just needs to be in the mood for it (which doesn't happen often).

The only person that does have some kind of connection and holds something in lxc heart is nmj, which jc is okay with.

He has heard how it had happened even before him in the past when seeking comfort. He also knew nmj had no interest in lxc either, as he needed comfort for his rather stagnant tries at courting jgy. he listens to lxc when the man complains about how these two just need to talk about the whatever between them and how nmj needs to make a move.

somehow it was not even that unbelievable that jc had noticed about lxc attempt even before the man made it super clear. but the thing nmj didn't know was why jc didn't believe it at first.

"Please help me" jc seemed a bit surprised at the suggestion, but accepted.

And with that started the mission of getting nmj to actually confess to jgy.

nmj said what he knew jgy liked (some filled in by lxc) and jc helped him choose a nice restaurant for them to go to.

"Dress nicely, I am sure a man who dresses properly and nicely will be a good point on you," jc said, helped by lxc for that part. "Now don't forget, the whole point of that diner is to tell him how you truly feel, be yourself, I am sure it will be enough if he also loves you".

jc was pretty sure it would all go well. from what he got from lxc, jgy did seem somewhat interested in nmj, despite the bickering. it was a different kind of dickering, one he only had with nmj. the way he cared for the man was different from other people.

they ended up spying on them, along with nhs who wanted to make sure his da-ge would FINALLY get his man. He trusted in jc's suggestion, it all seemed pretty good.

Everything seemed to be going good, jgy was clearly enjoying their dinner.

everything went smoothly, until he looked surprised, then flustered. The trio thought maybe he had fucked up, especially when nmj seemed to be getting nervous. Then jgy smiled and nodded, seemingly accepting whatever nmj had asked him.

and this is how nieyao became.

only later did they manage to know how nmj confessed:

by telling how he loved him, how he found him pretty and sexy, how he wanted to be with him and how he wished he could do everything with him, even the thing he didn't understand but that jgy seemed to love doing

He almost forgot about the whole gift-thing (a lie), as both the little notes and the gifts stopped after he sent his letter. It didn't really bother him (another lie); he had so many other things to do (a somewhat truth). While he was a bit disappointed (a gross understatement) that Jin Guangyao seemingly forgot about him, but the saber practices became one of his favorite things overnight (to the desperation of his bruised and wounded training partners).

His mood was just as bright as a lovely spring day (when one moment the sun is shining, and the next there's a devastating hail storm), and he was enthusiastically working on some slight issues (viciously tearing a proposal apart), when Nie Mingjue approached him. “Huaisang, we have a visitor,” he said.

The younger Nie rolled his eyes. “Another?” He groaned.

“Mm,” hummed Nie Mingjue noncommitally, gesturing towards the courtyard. With a mix of resignation and frustration, Nie Huaisang made his way to the entrance, his strides long and determined, as if he was going to a battle. He hated these “visitors”, because each and every one of them were the sons and daughters of smaller clan heads, trying to dump them onto him. Somehow they all thought that if he denied them through letter, he wouldn't be able to do that after seeing their “beautiful, smart and perfect” offsprings in real life.

He threw the doors open, but before he could march right in front of another spouse-wannabe, he stopped dead on his tracks.

There, standing amidst the peach blossoms, was Jin Guangyao, dressed in the rich, golden robes of the Jin sect, looking like the prettiest painting ever.

Nie Huaisang noted distantly that his eyes lit up as he saw Nie Huaisang, but it was as if he was seeing what was happen as an outsider. As if it was happening to somebody else.

“A-Sang,” Jin Guangyao whispered, and stepped forward, a tentative smile on his lips.

With that, Nie Huaisang stepped back, making Jin Falter with his movement.

They stood there for a moment, simply looking at each other, the world around them fading into the background. Nie Huaisang wasn't sure if he was dreaming or not; he wasn't even sure what he was feeling at that moment. Joy? Anger? Love? Rejection? Hope? Sadness? He really wasn't sure.

Finally, Jin Guangyao broke the silence, his voice filled with sincerity.

“I’ve missed you, Huaisang,” he confessed. “Every day, I thought of you. Before I sent you the gifts, I needed to establish myself in Lanling. Then, I found things that I thought you'd like, and I just had to send them to you, but I couldn't afford to bring them myself. After your letter, I was working hard to be able to come here. I'm sorry for not coming sooner, not replying you, but I had to convince the Sect Leader that it would benefit him if I moved here. I… I missed you, Huaisang. Can you forgive me?”

Nie Huaisang felt tears prick at the corners of his eyes. “I missed you too,” he admitted.

Jin Guangyao stepped closer, gently taking Nie Huaisang’s hand. “I need to tell you something, and I want to know if you felt the same way. I would wish to stay with you either way, as a friend, or… but I have to know.”

Nie Huaisang’s heart pounded in his chest, hope filling his chest, like a bad heart-burn. Or a stomach ace. “How I feel?”

Jin Guangyao nodded. “Huaisang, I love you. I want to be with you, to build a future together. Do you… Do you think you could ever feel the same?”

Nie Huaisang’s breath caught in his throat. “A-Yao, I…” He faltered, but the look in his partner's eyes gave him strength. “While I kind of hate you for the time without any contact, I… I do love you. I've fallen for you the first time you stepped in front of me to shield me from a bandit. I just couldn't hope that you'd feel the same, especially after knowing who I was.”

Relief and joy washed over Jin Guangyao’s face. It was unfairly pretty. He was always graceful, like a doe, pretty, like a flower petal, and beautiful without comparison, but love and happiness made him look ethereal. Like a god descending from the heavens.

He pulled Nie Huaisang into a tight embrace, propriety damned, and Nie Huaisang gladly let him. “Thank you, Huaisang. Thank you for giving me this chance.”

They stood there, wrapped in each other’s arms, savoring the moment of their reunion. Nie Huaisang could feel his brother's long-suffering stare from a distance, but he cared not even the tiniest bit. He was finally happy.

He had the approval of his clan, the trust of his beloved Da-ge, and the love of Jin Guangyao. Finally, he felt content.

WIP curiosity question: I would like to know more about JC's no good very bad day!

Okay so! 'JC's no good very bad day' is a SangCheng fic that's kind of part of the Orville Peck Cinematic Universe! The next summer after the main installments, Nie Huaisang goes back to Montana, and this time he decides to bring Jiang Cheng with him to try to cheer him up even though NHS doesn't quite know what's been upsetting JC lately. (The answer is that JC is feeling left behind and abandoned by the people he loves most [including NHS] and feels very much like he's stuck in a rut running the family company on his own, so a bonding trip with NHS sounds like a nice way to spend the summer.) Of course it's not that easy and they've got some shit to figure out between them considering JC is ace and NHS very much is not and that causes some major communication bobbles, but of course they'll get there in the end 😌 Here's a snippet!

They don’t have dinner nearly as often as Huaisang would like to during the spring, but it really can’t be helped. He always puts his head down and actually works in the spring, getting new textiles and designs ready and ensuring everything in his atelier will run smoothly while he visits Montana for the summer, as he has every year since Mingjue left. Jiang Cheng is infinitely patient with him in this respect, waiting for Huaisang to have a free evening to get together and putting aside anything he might have planned for himself at the drop of a hat if Huaisang texts him.

He’s really just…so good. Their routine is dependable in a way so many things in Huaisang’s life aren’t, which makes it all the more surprising the day Jiang Cheng breaks routine and texts him a simple request: Drinks tonight?, and the address of a bar that serves nice cocktails that he knows Huaisang likes. 

Huaisang dithers over answering for long enough that a second message comes through, another curt one: If you can’t, it’s fine. 

His thumbs hover over the keyboard for another long moment, his mind crowded with a river of apologies he should definitely make; he’s meant to work late tonight on a photo shoot that’s already been pushed back once, and Jiang Cheng is always so good about forgiving him when work gets in the way of hanging out…

He hardly ever asks to see him when he knows Huaisang is so busy, so it must be important, but he’d already said it’s fine if Huaisang misses—

Ahhhh A-Cheng I can’t tonight I’m so sorry 😭😭😭 can I have a rain check???

Huaisang sends it before he can overthink it, bottom lip caught under his teeth as he watches the read receipt light up, and the typing bubble bloop up right after —

Yeah, of course. Whenever you’re free.

Huaisang exhales a sigh of relief and sends back so many heart emojis they bump down to the next line as well, and he can just picture Jiang Cheng rolling his eyes (affectionately!) as he goes back to whatever it is he was already doing. Huaisang smiles to himself and gets back to work, reassured. Jiang Cheng really is just so good; the best, actually, and it’s ridiculous that he doesn’t even believe it.

Jiang Cheng goes alone to Huaisang’s favorite bar this side of town and scrolls through his own brother’s engagement announcement on fucking Instagram of all places, and drinks until it stops stinging that the post, made at 11:37 that morning, is the first he’s heard of it.

That's it, I've officially made a tag for this AU.

I do indeed have thoughts on the scoreline! Make way, make way for more tennis rambles. This is how JGY lifts the Coupe des Mousquetaires.

Jin Guangyao d. Nie Mingjue - semifinal

No one can deny that Nie Mingjue comes into this match in bad shape. He's carrying a couple of injuries and dropped sets to players he'd usually beat in straights. But this is a grudge match for him—the tournament where his father's career ended with a humiliating defeat to WRH. NMJ's father never won RG. NMJ has also never won RG—yet.

JGY, meanwhile, is in the form of his life thanks to his affiliation with the Wen agency juggernaut. It doesn't matter. No one thinks he has a chance even against a NMJ who's below his best, and at first it looks like they're right.

Set 1 - 7-6 (7-5)

JGY manages to hang onto his serve by the narrowest of margins. He doesn't get a single break point on NMJ's serve until the tiebreak when he snaffles the crucial mini-break by forcing an error off NMJ's backhand. He takes his first set point with an absolute classic of a disguised dropshot that NMJ can't get to in time. The crowd are excited mostly because they're surprised this match might be remotely competitive.

NMJ smashes his racket. He doesn't get a warning for racket abuse.

Analogous to NMJ's assault on the Wen in the latter stages of the war culminating in the moment when JGY reveals himself as being in WRH's employ.

Set 2 - 7-6 (7-5) 6-2

JGY sends NMJ running back and forth, using his insider knowledge of NMJ's chronic injuries to his advantage and giving NMJ very little opportunity to unleash his forehand. NMJ just can't slide well on the clay—that level of flexibility has never been his strong point, and all the quick turns and being dragged crosscourt are taking a toll. The crowd are confused but there's not really a sense of doubt that NMJ will break back and take this set to restore order. Some people are starting to get behind JGY because regardless of MDZS canon it is a science fact that tennis fans enjoy a good upset and NMJ is more respected than beloved.

NMJ takes a medical time out during the change of ends at 2-5 just after being broken for the second time, and JGY serves out to love, taking his first set point with a rare ace.

Analogous to JGY's taunting of NMJ including handling Baxia and referring to his father's death.

Set 3 - 7-6 (7-5) 6-2 0-6

Normal service is resumed. NMJ is absolutely furious about being two sets to love down against Meng Yao of all people and he takes a bathroom break that's a couple of minutes over the maximum time allowed. The umpire doesn't penalise this and the crowd don't express disapproval either.

NMJ finds his forehand and blows JGY off the court as one would expect. The third set is over in twenty-six minutes. A lot of NMJ's shots are body shots, intentionally hit directly at JGY so he has to dodge at the same time as attempting to return. Several make contact. Set point is a forehand down the line JGY has no hope of getting near.

Analogous to NMJ attacking JGY and striking him.

Set 4 - 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 0-6 6-0

JGY has remained composed and smiling throughout the match, even applauding NMJ's good play at times. Now he's dropped the smile that disguises the intensity of his focus and after an epic battle with multiple deuces he breaks NMJ's serve.

Then he does it again. The crowd cannot believe this is happening. In contrast to the lighting-fast bagel of the third, this is the longest and most precarious and difficult bagel in the history of the sport. It lasts longer than most sets that go to 7-5. Nevertheless, NMJ does not win a game, and when JGY takes his seventh match point with a favourable netcord he looks over to the debentures where WRH is watching and applauding.

Analogous to JGY kicking NMJ and continuing to assault and berate him until WRH takes over.

Jin Guangyao d. Wen Ruohan - final

This one doesn't need much of a set by set breakdown because it's in straights and it's over sooner than anyone can imagine, 6-4, 6-2, 6-1. JGY plays absolutely out of his skin and he's almost as surprised as everyone else not just that he wins but that he does it swiftly and in some style. We are talking 2019 Wimbledon final Halep level of play here. Absolutely eviscerating a legend of the sport.

First set - JGY breaks WRH at 4-4 then serves out. Second set - at 2-2, JGY wins the next four games. Third set - JGY wins four games on the trot to make it eight games in a row, drops one game on WRH's serve then closes out by holding and breaking WRH again. Championship point is the Murray-worthy lob that leaves WRH totally wrong-footed.

The crowd are shell-shocked but also going absolutely wild. JGY has gone from being that upstart who ruined the NMJ-WRH showdown everyone wanted, the one whose presence in the final has turned it into a procession for WRH, to immediate superstar.

Analogous to the suddenness of JGY killing WRH who is most definitely not expecting it, then revealing he's a spy and a war hero.

Bonus LXC

Naturally LXC attends both matches, the former ostensibly to support NMJ, though when JGY wins he goes to find him after the on court interview so he can congratulate him. After congratulating JGY and showing his support, he goes to commiserate with NMJ and spends an inordinate amount of time patiently rebutting NMJ's accusations of poor sportsmanship and corruption etc.

During the final he's in JGY's box and seems to be the only person on the planet who isn't surprised when JGY wins. He and JGY are confirmed to be entering the doubles at Wimbledon.
