4. Pairings: so many!
Harry Styles/Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles & Louis Tomlinson
Louis Tomlinson/Jack Cochrane
OT5 girl direction
Zayn Malik/Louis Tomlinson
Niall Horan/Greg James & Nick Grimshaw/Harry Styles/Louis Tomlinson & Zayn Malik/Liam Payne
Zayn Malik/Harry Styles
5. Story with the most: Kudos: Figure This Out Bookmarks: Figure This Out Comments: Louis and the no good, very bad day
6. Work I’m most proud of (and why): Stronger Than the Tide was written for the @1daroaceficfest this year. I started writing a different fic but that one got to be much longer than I had time to write, so I quickly changed course, found new inspiration, and wrote this one so fast. This one proved to me that my fics don't have to be long and complicated to be very meaningful.
7. Work I’m least proud of (and why): I am honestly super proud of everything I posted this year. I feel more confident in my abilities and enjoyed writing so much that I couldn't single any out.
8. Share or describe a favorite review you received: This year I took a writing course and practiced what I'd learned while writing a horror story. Sisterhood is so different than anything I've posted before, so I was a bit nervous to post it. The comments were really great, especially this one from @disgruntledkittenface, "Jinny, I'm so impressed! Your prose is so evocative, and the story gave me chills. You gave such a full, rounded picture of the setting and all of the girls' relationships that I felt like I was there. I admit, I hesitated when I saw the cannibalism tag, but I'm really glad I read this!"
9. A time when writing was really, really hard: This spring was difficult. March and April are always busy and stressful, and then I broke my ankle, had two surgeries, and moved back in with my parents while I healed. Toward the end of May I really wanted to write for @wankersday so I forced myself to try despite some severe writer's block. I drafted Louis and the no good, very bad day entirely on my phone while lying on a couch.
10. A scene or character you wrote that surprised you: The ace of clubs in Stronger Than the Tide was my favorite surprise. This wasn't a part of the original draft at all, but while editing it felt like something was missing to indicate that the cave was siren!Harry's home, so I added Harry's collection of human objects. Because this was an ace/aro fic it felt right to put an ace card in. I found out after that the ace of clubs can represent growth and tending to relationships, which fit the theme perfectly.
Louis looked around the empty cave awkwardly. The bright sunlight illuminated some shiny objects laid out on natural ledges in the stone walls that he hadn’t noticed the last time. He slid his hands into the pockets of his red trackies and wandered closer. Shiny agates, broken seashells, smooth sea glass. A fork with a bent tine, dried wildflowers, a bobbin of old thread. A collection of jewelry. A large scallop shell filled with coins from all over the world. A corked bottle with a piece of paper rolled inside. Louis reached out and picked up a single red playing card. He turned it over: the ace of clubs. “That’s my collection. When I find something unique I save it.” Louis had been so intrigued by the items he hadn’t heard Harry come out of the cave. He set the card down carefully where he'd found it. “You keep your collection here in a cave?” “The cave is my home.”
More under the cut.
11. A favorite excerpt of your writing: Niall naming Louis' soulmate goose after Bruce Springsteen in Louis and the no good, very bad day will always make me laugh
Niall and Louis walk down the pavement, with the goose strutting a few feet behind Louis, beak held high. “Did you name him?” Niall asks. “What?” “The goose. Did you name him?” “Why would I do that? He’s not a pet.” “Because he’ll be with you for an unknown amount of time. Seems like he should have a name. Like Horace. Or Lionel. Or Bruce! Bruce the Goose.” The goose lets out a short burst of little honks in what Louis can only describe as a happy goose noise. Louis shakes his head. “No. I’m not naming my Soulmate Goose. He’ll hopefully be gone in a few days and then I can get on with my life.” Honk! Niall says, “Maybe. But I’ve heard that some people are stuck with their Soulmate Goose for almost a year.”
12. How did you grow as a writer this year: This year I took a writing course because I wanted to intentionally work on writing as a craft. I learned a lot from the course and enjoyed dedicating time to practicing and improving my skill.
13. How do you hope to grow next year: I am working on a Pride and Prejudice adaptation and learning a lot from studying the source material. Taking a deep dive into such an iconic novel is teaching me a great deal about what makes that story and its characters so compelling.
14. Who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc etc): @lululawrence's @wordplayfics was a huge inspiration. I wrote 5 fics, 3 of which had been sitting in my drafts folder for years. I had so much fun seeing where each random word would take me each week.
15. Anything from your real life show up in your writing this year: Greg twisting his ankle in The Grundy County Corn Maze Incident was inspired by breaking my own ankle. Unfortunately the strong Irish man that helped me get to a car was not Niall . And The Kiss of Sleep that I wrote for @1dtrickortreatfest was inspired by the one and only time I tried melatonin.
16. Any new wisdom you can share with other writers: Keep all your unfinished drafts, even if it seems unlikely you will ever finish them. You never know when the inspiration will strike.
17. Any projects you’re looking forward to starting (or finishing) in the new year: I signed up as an author for @onedirectionbigbang for the first time this year! I am also an artist for two others and can't wait to see what these collaborations will bring
18. Tag some writers whose answers you’d like to read.
I tag @disgruntledkittenface @lululawrence @allwaswell16 @voulezloux @red-pandaaa @reminiscingintherain @so-why-let-your-voice-be-tamed @homosociallyyours @justanothershadeofblue @uhoh-but-yeah-alright and anyone else that wants to do this!

Chapter 16: Feather Light
After the meeting the investors filed out of the office. The meeting had gone well, despite your concerns, and you were glad that Buggy filled the role of support for you. It was better if the investors saw you as the voice of authority and reason, otherwise they would go past you and deal with Buggy directly no matter what. Which would defeat the purpose of your role in dealing with them.
In addition to Buggy's support, Doflamingo spoke highly of you as well, even if he did bring up Rain Dinners and Crocodile at the same time, but it gave you credibility with the other investors.
When everyone else was gone, Doflamingo was still seated, smiling at you. You turned to Buggy and asked if you could borrow his office for a moment, and after making sure you were sure, he left.
You kept your distance from the Warlord, but you looked over at him.
"What do you-," you pause and shake your head. "Thank you for your... gift."
"It was quite the ordeal to get my hands on that phone," He admits, staying in the chair with that same terrible smile. "The look on his face though, when I visited him was-."
"I'm not going to talk about... that." You say, anger twisting your face for a moment before you composed yourself. "Right now, we're talking about you and me, Mr. Donquixote. Specifically, why I'm contingent on your investment in this company."
"You're a superb employee." He says, his grin almost seeming to grow. "So much so that you were amply rewarded with a meal at the most exclusive restaurant within 100 kilometers of your home, Miss (Y/N)."
"You know exactly why we were there." You roll your eyes in frustration. "What do you want?"
"Oh, we were having such a delightful conversation," his smile falters a little, but not by much and not for long as he stands up. "If it is straight to the point then, so be it. I want to get to know you, Miss (Y/N)."
"Absolutely not." You take a step back involuntarily, "I already know more about you than I care to, and I no intention to-." You couldn't move. "I ... what's happening?"
Doflamingo's fingers moved, and then so did you. The realization made your blood run cold.
He was a devil fruit user, and whatever it was, it allowed him to control your body.
"Twice now you've amused me unintentionally, Miss (Y/N)." He says with a soft chuckle, closing the distance between the two of you, and covering your mouth with his hand as he leans down to be more face to face with you. "Scream and I puppeteer your precious boss off the roof of this building, are we clear?"
You nod, surprised to find you could.
"You understand your position then, Miss (Y/N)?" He asks, removing his hand from your mouth and caressing your cheek.
"I have a pretty good idea, yeah." You admit, trying not to flinch at the touch that sends a cold chill through you.
"This Friday, I believe you will find yourself with time to spare," he says, holding out a card. "Be here, at the time indicated. Dress comfortably." He leans forward, speaking low into your ear. "Do anything to displease me, and you will not be the target of my displeasure."
You swallow hard as he tucks the card into the collar of your blouse.
"If something outside my control happens, how can I tell you?" You ask after he takes a step back. "A wreck, an act of the gods, that sort of thing."
"... My number is on the card," he says after a moment's silence. "Miss (Y/N), you should do everything within your power to make sure you can attend."
"I will- I know, I just..." You look up at him before looking away. "I'm not feeling much like luck's on my side lately."
That unsettling chuckle shifts lazily between you again. "Fair enough. I will ensure you find your way to that appointment safely." He promises you as his fingers move and your body is willed where he wishes. He lifts you up and sets you on Buggy's desk, sliding his arm around your waist and he takes a picture of the two of you. "The more you indulge me, my dear, the more of this will remain between you and I."
Your eyes go wide as the picture clicks your situation into place, the image of Crocodile against the concrete blocks comes to mind. That had been a cruel gift for you, and this could be a similar gift for him.
Even if he had decided to move on from his feelings, there was no way for you to know it. You couldn't tell him your decision any more than he could tell you his. It didn't matter what your feelings were, the fact of the matter was that the only shared point of contact the two of you had was Doflamingo, and the bastard could frame what he knew in a way that would work to his benefit.
You wanted to move on, you didn't want to hurt Crocodile in the process. At least no more than you could help. You could hope he harbored no more feelings for you, but the possibility that you were both still precious to each other was like a weight on your heart right now.
"I understand." You will the words to come forth, but there's no much energy behind them.
"As long as we have an understanding." He purrs, patting your shoulder gently before he walks away.
You feel your body relax as Doflamingo leaves the office, and after a moment you slide off the desk. You pull the card from your blouse and aren't surprised to see the card is for Baratie's. A time of 7pm is written on the front and the back has a phone number, one that you unfortunately recognize.
It had been saved on your phone for the last year under the capitalized heading of "Do Not Answer" ever since Doflamingo had called you a year ago.
. . . . . .
You had talked to Buggy afterward and told him pretty much everything. You didn't go into the details of the relationship you had with Crocodile – other than the fact that you had been dating - but you wanted Buggy to at least be in your corner entirely if you were going to have to deal with Doflamingo. Your boss' jaw had been practically on the floor for the entire conversation and you were a little surprised he hadn't sorted out that you were dating the CEO before now.
Buggy didn't seem like the sharpest knife in the box, but he was surprisingly good at picking up on things. Maybe he had simply put on blinders when it came to Crocodile – better to not know too much in that case. It could be it just wasn't something Buggy thought about himself. In all the time you'd known him you hadn't known him to have anyone on his arm, or even talk about it, and Buggy tended to talk about everything.
Friday you had taken half a day off work, and a couple of hours before you were due at Baratie's you were standing in your room, looking at the clothes in your closet.
It was requested that you dress comfortably. You weren't sure what exactly comfortably meant to Doflamingo, but comfortably to you meant slacks and a blouse. You were going to Baratie's so you couldn't wear jeans and a t-shirt, but you weren't going to wear the dress you had worn before. Even if you thought that was exactly what he wanted you to do.
It was a fine line you needed to walk, to maintain your dignity, and also to not displease Doflamingo to the point that he took his frustrations out on anyone else. Be it Crocodile, or Buggy, or even Alvida, as you were quite sure he was aware of all of your social connections at this point.
You realized you had a decent compromise available to you and pulled out a simple black dress. The neckline went down a bit further than you'd like – at least while being in Doflamingo's presence, but the cap-sleeved shoulders and the just-past-your-knees skirt length left the dress feeling cute and not sexy. A simple pearl necklace and some single pearl post earrings would make a bun hair style pull everything together in a more business than pleasure look.
This way you'd be dressed comfortably, and in a dress, and absolutely no miscommunications about your thoughts on the matter. With luck, it wouldn't be skirting on the wrong side of the line, but it's not like he bothered to buy you something, and quite frankly you were relieved about that. So this much should be fine.
With an hour to make it to the restaurant, you left your apartment. When you got downstairs there was a limo at the end of the walkway. You started to move around it and an older gentleman that was standing by the rear door cleared his throat. You tilted your head, looking at him curiously.
"The Young Master requested that I ensure you arrive at Baratie's safely, Miss (L/N)." He said, opening the back door of the limo for you and stepping aside.
Delightful.
"... Very well. It seems I am in your care, Mister?"
"You may call me Mr. G." He offers as you step inside the thankfully empty limo.
"Thank you, Mr. G."
The perk of the ride to the restaurant was that you didn't have to think about the fact that you were going to the restaurant. You didn't have to consider 6pm Friday evening traffic. Your nerves weren't frazzled by worrying about each passing minute no matter if the traffic was good or bad. You arrival was in the hands of one of his own men, and by association, could not be your fault no matter what.
The only thing that did bother you, was you currently had no easy way home. You had plenty of options available to you, but you were quite sure that you were going to have unfortunate company riding with you on the way back to your apartment.
When you arrived, you were surprised to see Doflamingo standing outside the restaurant. He was dressed plainly, or plainly for how you knew he preferred to dress. He was in a suit, but it was nothing special – muted colors, good fit, and his trademark glasses. He looked – as one expected an ex-model to look – good.
He looked more like the CEO of a pharmaceutical company than he did a model or a Warlord. It was as close to being undercover as you could've imagined him managing.
"Ah, Miss (Y/N), pushing boundaries already, I see." He muses, offering his elbow as you walked over to him.
"Hardly." You reply, accepting the offered arm as a means of keeping the peace. "If you required I dress a specific way, then you should've provided better parameters. I am dressed comfortably, and I'm dressed accordingly for Baratie's."
You got nothing more than a soft chuckle as a response as the two of you were seated. Doflamingo had taken over ordering for the both of you, and you focused on maintaining neutrality. You didn't want to give him anything to use to get under your skin with, and so going with the flow was the best bet. At least to a point.
"I must admit, Miss (Y/N), you're taking this more calmly than I had expected." He says after the waiter had left.
"It is what it is, I suppose." Your brows knit slightly, and you manage to look at him. "I just don't get why."
"You have theories, I'm sure." He leans back and motions toward you. "Share them, don't hold back. I'd rather ripe honesty than rotten platitudes."
"You called me a year ago, and we have a minute-long conversation, during which you admitted to having cloned my phone. Nothing for a year and then, just as my role in Buggy's organization changes, you... gift me... my old phone. The one that was taken from me for my protection. I have no idea how long you had it, or what you've done to it, I don't even know if it's safe for me to keep it." You shake your head and shrug. "I can't understand why you'd be focused on me, I'm nobody. Sure," you add before he can interject. "I had a relationship that made me someone to somebody, but that's been severed, and if your goal was to simply torment him, you could do so without wasting your time with me."
You sigh and take a sip of wine. "Either you miss him and are trying to while away the hours by tormenting me for your own amusement, or..." You make a face and shake your head. "No – It's not that."
"Mm, don't hold back on me now, Miss (Y/N)." Doflamingo says, and there's an edge to his bemused chuckle that makes you nervous.
"... Or you think you like me, and you're trying to sort that out." It sounded utterly laughable to say it out loud, but there's a silence that settles between the two of you that makes you uncomfortable. "And... that's not possible." You add after you can't take the silence any longer.
"Oh? You seem so sure about that." He leans forward, catching your gaze as he looks over his glasses.
You look away. "I am, I just don't know if I could say why without risk."
"Honesty may not always be pleasant, Miss (Y/N), but I won't punish you for it."
"There's no room for someone else in your heart, Mr. Donquixote." You say after a moment's consideration. "At best I'm a distraction, at worst you see me as a discarded toy and you're curious why he kept me around."
His smile freezes on his face for a moment, and you're unsure if he's shocked, angry, or simply unable to smile any wider than he already is. After a few moments of more uncomfortable silence, he speaks.
"What fascinates me, is how you reacted to his incarceration." Doflamingo says, a lazy smile on his face as he leans back in his chair. "You weren't surprised by the title he held."
You shake your head. "I knew what he was before I started working for him." You admit.
"And me?"
You nod, not wanting to put it to words. No matter what answer you gave – honest or not – it would've been entertaining for Doflamingo.
"Fufufufu, interesting." He leans forward as your meal is served. "You know all of us?"
"By name, at least." You answer evenly.
"How unusual." He muses for a moment, taking a bite or two of food before continuing. "Let's talk terms, Miss (Y/N)."
"Terms?"
He nods. "I do wish to get to know you. We'll say it's to sate my curiosity for now. You quite despise me, and I would prefer not to simply break you and toss you aside."
You were acutely aware of your position before now but hearing him put it so bluntly made your whole body go cold for a moment.
"Then..." You pause a moment to make sure he's done before you continue. "Don't let this effect my job and don't force me into anything physical."
He was silent for a moment before he smiles. "Don't lie to me, and don't try to worm out of dates with flimsy excuses. Do that, and I can promise I will honor your requests, my dear."
The rest of the dinner was spent dealing with the finer points of our arrangement. For simplicity's sake, and for his amusement, you were to simply be 'dating' if anyone asked. He was allowed to buy you gifts, and you were expected to keep them, but he wouldn't force you to use or wear them. You got him to agree to the caveat that he wouldn't bug anything either, but with your current situation, it wasn't like he needed to keep tabs on you.
So long as you dressed like someone who wanted to be going on dates, he wouldn't force a specific wardrobe on you. You were also forbidden from giving him the silent treatment on anything, the idea was, after all, for him to sate his curiosity. So long as you were honest, you would be okay.
The only thing left to do was play along to the best of your ability and hope he grew bored of you before you reached the end of your rope.
As you got home that evening you realized that it was more likely you'd reach the end of your proverbial rope. Donquixote had waited a year before he had sprung this trap, which meant he was far more patient that you would've guessed. You already knew how terribly manipulative he was, and you could only hope that no matter how long you had to endure this you wouldn't find yourself pulled along by that manipulation.
As you drifted off to sleep, you could've sworn you could smell the sweet scent of citrus and warm sand, and thought that your mind was desperately trying to soothe you the best it could.

Growing up, Corbeau learned to appreciate birthdays being a chance to forget about daily worries and focus on yourself. Something she took pride in was working with what she had to make her sisters birthdays special despite the circumstances-- not just for the birthday person, but for other people around them too.
To Corbeau, Homura was no exception. In fact, Corbeau would argue that Homura needed something for her birthday the most out of anyone she had met in her lifetime. So, she set out to do just that-- a day of fun to let Homura enjoy herself.
"I think this might be to your liking, Homura dear." Corbeau approaches Homura with a palm-sized velvet box. Inside Homura would find a dainty silver necklace featuring a silhouette of a ballerina. With small amethyst stones lining the bottom of the tutu.
"You may be a powerful being now, but you are still human, and humans have birthdays that should be celebrated." Corbeau smiles, then claps her hands together. "And celebrations need food! Why don't we make something you enjoy? I'd love for the chance to learn about modern recipes together with you."
(from @deathdanse!)
unprompted ask / always accepting / @deathdanse
If the dolls were here, all fourteen of them, they would most likely surround Corbeau the instant their identical blue-eyed gazes locked on the gift-shaped box. They knew the birthday of their mistress fell on February 22nd, so they have been dropping hints about wanting to celebrate it ever since the month of love rolled around. The hints started off subtle, something she can easily ignore, but they began to become increasingly obvious to the point Corbeau noticed it. If they couldn't convince their mistress to celebrate, then someone else will no doubt do it for them. Corbeau worked perfectly...except for her timing, that is.
"Oh, you didn't have to buy me anything. Your mere presence in this new age, your willing decision to join my cause, is more than enough. A physical gift, even if it's for my birth, is not needed," Homura explained calmly, still eyeing the fine-looking box. She worried Corbeau would be swindled the moment she got more money her previous life got to enjoy. Rather than getting conned out of her money, she chose to spend the money on her.
"It is quite beautiful, Corbeau. I may disagree with the need for celebrations for my birthday, but you do have quite good tastes..." Homura admits quietly as she leaned forward to examine the necklace, taking in the shimmer of the amethyst gemstone. With a small sigh of defeat, slender hands move to gather her long hair. It's a silent request for Corbeau to help her put on the necklace. The silver chain is thin, indicating the clasp will be annoying to handle herself. She hoped this lovely necklace of the ballerina is the only gift, purely because the dolls will get jealous if she received multiple gifts.
"How much did this cost you?" Homura inquired as soon as the lovely necklace is around her formerly naked neck. The real question is how much it cost her, but the money became Corbeau's property as soon as she slid the money over. Rather than forcing Corbeau to try to figure out new currency, a simple card as well as easy numbers to remember was easier to handle. It's a smoother transition, though that meant it would be easier for Corbeau to do as she pleases. Technology is still a struggle for her, but that's okay since Corbeau can still fight when needed.
"Now we must celebrate with food?" Goodness, that sounded like a good idea to alert the dolls on a party. They did not need food, but they still ate as if she starved them. If they weren't eating, then they liked to play with their food as much as they enjoyed toying with any living targets. Eventually, they will return back to her home once their duties were over... Either way, she didn't want to take the risk of making a homemade meal at her home since they were bound to find out.
"How about this, Corbeau: We can go eat anywhere you have been wanting to try out. Anywhere at all, not even in Japan. I don't mind where since I can still get there with you. Let's try something new together, shall we?" Homura finally relents, unable to ignore Corbeau's joyfulness for long. She hasn't celebrated her birthday properly in a long time, but the sudden attention still affected her.
The dolls will not be invited.

King of Diamonds - Part IV
•♦•♦• When Chishiya Shuntarou accepted to remain in the Borderlands as a citizen, I knew there was nothing I could do but to accept as well. •♦•♦•

The tall woman dropped down on Chishiya’s bed since he occupied the only available chair in the room while I leant against the desk. She obviously knew more than I did, which would explain why she had known about the medical wing. “How?” I asked aloud, but it was Chishiya who answered.
“You’ve been a citizen already before the relaunch”, he stated. It wasn’t even a question and Rikki nodded, pretty much unimpressed by his observing skills.
She scratched her chin and turned around to the door for a second, where another patient was shuffling down the hallway. “This has been my third relaunch since choosing to stay here”, Rikki explained. “The days locked up in those rooms are boring, but you get used to it.”
So many questions roamed around in my head, and yet I held back because asking all of them would for sure make me look dumb. It was hard, but I tried to stay patient and wait for Chishiya to answer some of them. He hummed, thinking about what Rikki had just said.
“It makes sense. I don’t know how many players accepted the citizenship, but there have to be more than the number needed for the face cards.”
“You’re quite a clever one, aren’t you!” Rikki laughed and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “I’m sure you already know that citizens aren’t forced to play games. We have no visa anymore and thus don’t rely on a game to stay alive. Basically, one could stay here for decades and die a natural death.” She shrugged and rolled her eyes, indicating that this wasn’t what she had in mind. “However, I haven’t met anyone so far who did that. Everyone wants to be part of the big games eventually.”
We weren’t forced to play. It would be possible for Chishiya and me to stay here for months, maybe even years, without endangering our lives. I assumed that this building would continue to provide food and everything, so it would even be a comfortable live, if I ignored all the dying people.
I knew though, that Chishiya would never do that. He didn’t decide to become a citizen just to relax and do nothing.
“What about you, then?” I asked Rikki, “do you plan to stay here forever?”
“Hell, no!” she snorted and leant back against the wall, pulling her knees up to her chest. It almost made her look innocent; not like someone who beat the game of the Borderlands. “Three rounds have been enough. It’s always the same, you know? People come here and are confused and scared. Some form a bigger alliance – the Beach, the Red Church… There’s one in every round. They beat the games until the second stage. Face games start. Sometimes the players win, sometimes they lose. If they win, it means new citizens for us. Yay. Anyway, the relaunch happens. Again. And again. And again, and again. It’s impressing the first time, maybe even the second time. But I’ve seen it all now. I want action!”
“Red Church? Sounds like a conspiracy, if you ask me.”
Rikki scoffed, probably thinking back to that round. “It was! They were even crazier than the people from the Beach. Praised the lasers as some kind of god, you know? Death brought by justice, bla bla bla… Justice won’t help you here if you’re too weak. It’s a game, after all.”
Chishiya had faced the window, seemingly lost in whatever he saw out there, but I knew he was listening. “God is a gambler”, he hummed, but didn’t explain his thoughts further. He didn’t believe in God, and before I could question what he was trying to tell us, he continued: “You’ll participate in the games this round, then.”
I noticed how he winced again and shifted just so slightly. The wounds had to cause him pain still, even though he’d never admit it. At least I was sure now that they’d be treated well enough for him to feel better soon.
“I’ll apply for becoming the Roamer, once all spot cards are collected”, Rikki stated with pride and excitement in her voice.
Bit by bit, I begun to realize that this world was much more complex than I had originally thought. It was not just about beating games. The people who arrived here could either be a player or a dealer, I knew that much from my time at the Beach and from the dealer’s base. Though we weren’t given a choice here; it was probably a random distribution. Since the players had won the first stage, all of the dealers had been killed. Thus I assumed that if all players had died during those first games, the dealers would have won and would have been given the choice to stay.
Now, all those survivors who decided to accept turned into citizens. Citizens didn’t have to play games, but since Mira and Kuzuryuu had attended some of them anyway, we were obviously allowed to. For fun, so we wouldn’t get bored until the second stage? Or as a cover so normal players wouldn’t see through us?
Once the face cards were up, citizens could try to beat the remaining players in much harder games. It was a free choice, though, and apparently we were even allowed to choose which card we wanted to be. “A roamer?” I muttered, and again it was Chishiya who put one and one together and answered my question.
Without turning his gaze from the window, he concluded: “Like the King of Spades.”
Following his gaze, I saw that the patio was filling with people now that the rooms weren’t locked anymore. Had the new games begun already? Had new players already appeared?
Rikki clapped her hands. “A clever one, indeed! Exactly, like the King of Spades. Only that I’ll be the Queen, of course.” She brushed back her hair, trying to make it look majestic, which didn’t quite work due to the shortness of her hair. “There always needs to be a roamer to spice things up a little, you know?”
Chishiya nodded, and I noticed that his smirk had returned. “Otherwise the players would just hide somewhere and wait for the others to clear all games, premised they have yet enough days on their visa.”
“Yes, yes, yes! This would be soo boring, wouldn’t it? But the roamer, they are a force of nature. A hurricane, even reaching the deepest of cellars and the darkest of rooms!” Rikki was almost screaming now, her voice full of excitement and her eyes glowing even wilder. “Shirabi did such a good job as the King! I mean, you have seen him. He was splendid!”
What she said made me swallow. The King of Spades had been a ruthless murderer. No other citizen had killed as many people as he did, and he had been heartless, fearless, absolutely horrific and frightening. He had been a hunter, able to track every single player through a device with an endless amount of ammunition. Splendid would have been the very last word coming to my mind when I thought about him.
And yet, the fact that Rikki knew him by name assumed that she had known him, which somehow made him human again. A monster, but still human. And it reminded me that he had also started as a normal player. He had defeated all the games, had chosen to stay here and then accepted to become the King of Spades. Now, with a new game starting, Rikki would take his place. She would hunt down players and slay dozens of them, until one of them would manage to kill her in return.
Why was I surprised? The mere fact that she sat here in front of me was enough proof that she wasn’t as innocent as I wanted her to be. Still… I had hoped for us to become friends. Could I be friends with someone who was willing to do such a terrible thing?
“You’ll be a mass murderer”, I whispered, unable to keep that thought unspoken.
Unimpressed by my reaction, Rikki sighed. “It’s a showoff of my abilities. If I’m stronger than the rest, they’ll die. If someone is stronger than me, I’ll die. It’s as simple as that. Always has been.”
Chishiya’s lips slightly parted, telling me that he had lost interest in our conversation and was now thinking about something else. Knowing him pretty well by now, I could guess what it was.
Being one of the smartest people in the Borderlands, it was obvious that the only type of game good enough for him would be Diamonds. He probably was reliving the Diamonds games he had won, especially how he had beaten Kuzuryuu. I hadn’t been there and didn’t know details about the game, but I tried to imagine how Chishiya would sit there, hovering above the other players as their enemy. With one of the players probably clever enough even to outsmart the cold-hearted blonde.
“What about you?” Rikki threw in when the silence grew too thick, and her head was slightly tilted when she watched me closely. “Clubs, maybe? I think a balanced game would suit you most. Something where you won’t have to dirty your hands with the blood of others, eh?” She stuck out her tongue, clearly having fun with this.
I couldn’t laugh about it, though. “To be honest… I don’t want to participate in a game at all. I… am not suited for a face card.”
“Aaanyway!” Stretching her upper body, Rikki eventually got up from the bed and pat my shoulder. The touch almost made me flinch, but I told myself to keep it together. Rikki was a monster no less and no more than the rest of us. She just did what this world wanted us to do, and it made her happy. Besides, she didn’t force me to do the same. People here were not only black and white, not solely good or bad. There were many things in between, and Rikki seemed to be funny and kind. If she didn’t talk about killing people with the same excitement as visiting a theme park.
“Time for me to catch up with friends. Watch some of the new players, and all that. See you around!” She said, and then she was gone, even having the decency to close the door behind her.
I let out a long sigh and wrapped my arms around Chishiya’s shoulders, in desperate need for something non-murderous now. Of course I tried to be careful so I wouldn’t hurt him, and Chishiya didn’t turn away.
“Three days, and you already befriended the Queen of Spades”, he muttered with both acknowledgement and mockery in his voice.
I huffed and buried my face deeper into his shoulder so he wouldn’t see my pout. “Shut up.”
There was so much to think about. All the information Rikki had given us, that I needed to process. Questions that had been left unanswered. Answers that had only led to more questions.
At least Chishiya was next to me, dwelling in his own thoughts, not even complaining as I fulfilled my need for some physical affection. The sky outside turned dark and windows lit up all around the patio. Soon enough, red lasers would emerge from the sky and kill those who didn’t renew their visa or lost a game.
I remembered the day I had arrived here, clueless about how the Borderlands worked. My first game had been easy enough and victory more luck than skill, but many others hadn’t been that lucky.
Rikki had answered many questions, but one huge information had never been given to me:
Why had we come here, in the first place? What was the Precondition to strand here? There seemed to be a never ending flow of new players, and yet not a single soul knew why. Or if someone knew, they hadn’t told me yet.

Excerpt:
“Optimistically? 40 points,” Tony says, working at his tie with one hand. He keeps his body angled in a way that Pepper can’t see what he’s doing, because he doesn’t want her to fret about the brewing argument here, and if she sees him struggle with the tie, she’ll get up to help.
Stane’s eyebrows go up. “At minimum.”
What follows is a completely reasonable argument on Stane’s part about what’s feasible as a company. Tony remains steadfast, even as he notes Obie’s eyes drifting down to his chest multiple times. Obie clearly knows. If Tony weren’t so worried about Emory, if she were waiting for him at the house and he knew she was safe, he would be making notes about the number of times he has already thought about her so he could make her laugh tonight. She’d be particularly amused about the way he feels almost objectified, how the fact of what he’s carrying on his chest is a weight between himself and Obie, a hidden aspect of the conversation. He wants to ask her if that’s what having breasts like hers is like, wants her to slap him, wants to make it up to her. He just wants.
Chapter Fourteen: [weather redacted in report of unexplained incident in Afghanistan]
It is very clear to Emory that she is under intense observation. Her room is smaller than a typical dorm room, and something about it feels wrong, like it’s being re-used as a hospital room instead of designed for that purpose. The lack of a window is particularly strange, and she gets up to look around, grabbing her IV pole to roll it around with her. The bag attached to her tubing is empty, and she is tempted to pull the whole thing out, but that would likely draw attention. It is strange to her that she’s been dressed in scrubs instead of a hospital gown, though-- another indication that something is not quite normal.
When Emory approaches the door, she sees that the metal box above it has shining new screws drilled into chipped, ancient paint. The box has a steady red light which blinks green seconds before the door opens to admit ‘Nurse Kate.’
Emory tells her she needs to use the bathroom, and remarks on the lack of a call button. The agent/nurse says something noncommittal about the call button and leads her to a different door (with another metal box, this one near the knob) requiring a card scan to open. The hallway beyond is under construction and dead-ends with a few tall file cabinets blocking the path.
The bathroom itself is multi-stall, and her guardian waits by the sinks. When Emory goes to flush the toilet, it makes a terrible sucking noise and doesn't fill back up. The sink itself is set to a trickle.
It’s almost like they’re afraid of what I could do with the water! Emory tells herself. Someone’s clearly got a wild imagination. After seeing just how much air she needs to gather to do anything of consequence, it is laughable to think that she could manage to get enough water from an office bathroom to accomplish anything more than getting her blonde guard soaking wet.
Nurse Kate lets Emory precede her into the room, and Emory angles her path back to the bed carefully, her mind racing. At the last second, she turns to face the agent and backs up so she is leaning against the only viable exit. The woman stops and stands casually, legs apart, hands at her hips. If movies and TV are accurate about agent-types having gun holsters at their center back, Emory is certain this woman has one.
“Under whose authority are you holding me here?” she asks, wishing she had pockets to sink her hands into to hide how much they shake. Tony’s voice in her head tells her that obvious distress might be to her advantage, if they’re worried about what she might be capable of.
“Well,” the agent pretending to be a nurse says, tipping her head sideways and smiling with what is almost but not quite a sweet expression, “Primarily, we’re just trying to make sure you’re medically sound. Beyond that, there could be some security concerns.”
“For me? Or for the population at large?” Emory asks, surprised. It doesn’t seem to read as surprise to her guard, though.
“See, that? That’s just telling on yourself,” Nurse Kate points out.
“Or I’m bluffing.” Emory shrugs, sliding the IV pole in front of her like a shield.
“Well, the difference between the two is the authority under which you’re being held.”
“And that meeting I requested?”
“Are you blocking the door in hopes of advancing that timeline?”
Emory looks behind her as if she hadn’t realized where she was standing. “Are we playing that game where we keep asking a question until the person who doesn’t loses?”
The agent/nurse does an exaggerated shrugging maneuver and silently starts toward Emory. Emory steps aside just enough for the door to open, looking up at the light. Just as she thought it might, the light turns green before the woman touches the door. It hadn’t turned green until the other woman had approached. That probably means there’s a second person watching everything that’s going on, hitting a button to let her fake nurse back out. The other option is that her badge also unlocks this door within a certain proximity, which might be useful.
The woman opens the door, and Emory throws a hand out to stop it. Immediately, Nurse Kate spins into a clearly combative stance, a hand flying out to hold onto the door underneath Emory’s own grip.
“Can I have a book or something to do?” Emory asks in a friendly voice, as if that was the purpose of stopping the door. She now has confirmation that the woman standing opposite her is a special agent of some kind, one prepared to fight her if necessary.
With a decisive head shake, the woman walks through the open space, yanking the door out of Emory’s hand. She doesn’t even seem upset, despite the possible display of ego in not wanting to ‘lose’ the verbal spar.
“What, you think I’ll get bored and play with some sort of magical superpower?” Emory says aloud, laughing.
She has learned more about her situation, though most of the information is functionally useless. The room is for her, she’s sure, with a new security system on one door, though the badge scanner on the other seems like it’s been there for a while. If she had to guess, Emory would say she’s in a dis-used wing of a governmental building, as evidenced by the creative blockade at the end of the hallway. Her room feels like it was originally maybe some kind of small lobby with a reception desk, one that agents or employees would have to pass through to reach offices beyond the badge scan.
Emory climbs back into her bed and starts fiddling with the velcro of her former restraints. It seems like whoever has ordered her confinement is both concerned and creative. However, if she’s right and they’re hoping she’ll display her abilities in frustration or boredom, they’ve checked their logical sense at the door.
She just spent how long stuck in a cave with practically nothing to do? And how exactly did she get out of there? Oh, right. She escaped.
Is that what they want her to try to do now? Emory’s not discounting that option, but what she really wants are answers. It’s been about an hour since she woke up. She decides not to try anything or complain until the next morning at the very least, which gives her a chance to observe the room overnight.
The problem is that to pass the time, Emory absolutely cannot think about Tony, not if she wants to thwart Nurse Kate and whoever is employing her. She’ll have to distract herself, which she has practice doing. Emory pulls the blanket over her head as usual, and then laughs. She’d only started practicing her singing like this because she’d both wanted to hide and wanted to feel less self-conscious, but now it’s a habit, one that probably looks suspicious. It’s not the best thing for a singer to do, but by now, it’s comforting, and she definitely needs that right now. Somewhere out there in the world, she knows that Tony’s arm hurts, and she’s not there to joke about the large number of pain relief options he has access to now. It feels so strange to think that if she pulled the blanket back down, he wouldn’t be there.
The familiar tingle of energy build-up sheaths her arms, and Emory sighs. She’s going to have to push away these thoughts, but Tony’s been a part of her daily life for so long that it’s like a part of her is missing.
That thought brings back the memories she’d tried to bury out of necessity.
Yinsen.
Just like that, her power dissipates, as if a switch has been thrown.
Emory pulls the blanket down off of her face so she can breathe freely. The weight of grief and guilt pull her into the fetal position on the bed, though she’s careful not to dislodge the IV. She hopes that his soul is at peace along with his family. His confession that they’d been dead the whole time was another truth that Emory had shoved aside the day of their escape, and now seems like exactly the right time to wallow in how horrible that feels.
Maybe her misery will work out to be an advantage anyway, if AgentNurse Kate is watching through her hidden surveillance cameras. She might worry about Emory’s grief and whether it’s dangerous. If Emory could have her way, no one would feel at ease tonight, not when someone so kind, intelligent, and morally just has just been taken from the world.
There had been an officious man standing beside Pepper. That’s the thing Tony focuses on-- not the uproar of press questions, not Stane’s horrified laughter as he shuffles Tony away from the podium, not the near-constant sound of camera shutters clicking as they leave the room. The three of them, Tony, Obie, and Pepper, take the private elevator on the way up to Tony’s office, and despite the fact that his arm has started to ache again, Tony can’t stop himself from laughing.
“What could possibly be funny?” Obie asks. Fury emanates from every pore, every letter of every word.
“I’m destined to be stuck in confined spaces in groups of three, it seems.”
“Tony--” Pepper’s concerned voice breaks off when he reaches out and squeezes her hand briefly. Obie’s huff of frustration sets Tony’s own temper off, in a way that his hurried, desperate reassurals to the press hadn’t.
“What, that’s too far? Comfort? What a shock. You’ve never been great at that, as I recall,” he snaps, seeing the words hit and feeling a perverse sort of glee in seeing their impact. They’re true but unfair. Obie had stepped in and kept the company afloat while Tony himself had made bad choices with miraculous outcomes, over and over again, until he’d pulled himself together enough to head Stark Industries himself. There hadn’t been much time for comfort, and his younger self probably wouldn’t have appreciated it anyway.
“Tony!” Pepper gasps. “You’re-- you’re shaken up. Not yourself.”
The elevator door opens and Tony doesn’t want to look at the room beyond, because the thing he wants --the person he wants to see-- won’t be there. Stane pushes past to stalk into the room, leans down to rest both hands on the desk for a second before spinning around to point directly at him.
“You need to take some time before you put yourself out there again. That was--” he pauses, rubs a hand over his face, and the person that emerges is the exact same jovial, glad-handing executive that had tried to smooth everything over minutes before. “I’m, I’m glad you’re okay. Okay, Tony? I’m glad. But decisions this big after an event like that--”
Tony propels himself out of the elevator fueled primarily by outrage. “After seeing the kind of people who have access to our weapons and moving decisively to stop it? Is that the event you’re referring to?”
He walks right up to Obie, and it’s only because his arm hurts like hell that he doesn’t reach up and do the thing that Stane always loves to do, adjust Tony’s collar, pat the fabric paternally, like he actually ever gave a fuck. How long has this man used his jolly attitude to cover his contempt? Would Tony have ever realized it without spending time with Yinsen and learning to recognize the practice?
“So, what? That’s it?” Stane asks, holding his hands out and letting them drop with a sound as they strike his leg. “You against the world? There’s no need to do that, Tony, and I gotta tell you, trying to go it alone will just make it easier for people to ignore you. I may be many things to many people, and I’m not good at all of them, I’ll admit it. One thing I am good at? PR. But you brought this down on my head with no warning, and it’s going to take a hell of a lot of goodwill to fix that.” He puffs out a breath and shakes his head, chuckling, once again returning to his True North when dealing with Tony, exasperated amusement. “What’s your over/under on the stock drop for tomorrow, do you think?”
Tony looks over his shoulder to see that Pepper’s settled herself down at the chair beside his desk. She’s got a notebook out on the desk beside her, and there are a few lines written on it, but her hands are in her lap. She is a picture of studied calm. He’s pretty sure she’s taking notes as surreptitiously as possible; it’s exactly what he needs from her, at exactly the moment he needs it. Tony throws her a little smile of gratitude, feeling a tiny sting of guilt when her reaction to seeing such an expression from him is surprise.
That makes him think of Emory too.
“I think we should take another look into ARC reactor technology,” Tony interrupts. Obie’s lips turn downward, and he flicks a sheepish glance at Tony’s face like he knows he’s been caught before shaking his head.
“Nah, come on, that was a publicity stunt! We built that thing to shut the hippies up!”
What follows is another conversation full of pushback, but he knows Stane’s just stalling. Finally, they both stop arguing and just level suspicious looks at each other for a full fifteen seconds.
Tony just knows that if he looked over at Pepper, she’d be the very picture of anxiety. He decides to put her out of her misery. “Could you have a lousier poker face? Just tell me, who told you? Rhodey? Or Pepper?”
“Told him what?” Pepper interjects. Tony turns to look at her and she’s wide-eyed, her brows furrowed.
“Rhodey didn’t tell-- You’re kidding, right?” he demands, shocked.
“You were with us the whole time! Harry was driving, I was in the back--”
“Hold on, Harry?” Tony interrupts, bewildered.
Pepper’s face turns bright red. “It’s-- y-ou were gone, Tony. He, the nickname, it, it felt like a farce, neither of us could--”
Tony waves a hand to cut her off. “All right, okay, got it.” Her extreme embarrassment and stuttering response tells Tony that the moment he’d seen on the tarmac might have been something private and meaningful to Happy and Pepper. He sets that world-tilting notion aside for the moment.
Stane rests a heavy hand on Tony’s shoulder. “Show me.”
“All right,” he agrees, releasing the velcro on his sling.
“Tony, what--?” Pepper gets up and comes over, taking the sling before it falls to the floor.
He unbuttons his shirt with the two of them staring at him in amazement. It’s not hard to feel a little bit like Superman when he pulls the two sides open so they can see the reactor more clearly.
“Oh, my God,” Pepper whispers. “Is that… stuck? In your chest?”
He looks from her to Obie. At first, the man’s intrigued, but then his expression shifts. Tony recognizes the look, because it’s the same one Stane has always worn when Tony brought him a schematic, an improvement, an innovation.
Somewhere in the man’s head, a voice is saying, How do we monetize this?
He’d spent years enjoying the process of earning that look in Stane’s eyes, but today it’s concerning.
Next chapter, Tony starts making threats and gathering information to find Emory, and she makes the acquaintance of a man named Nick Fury.

Chapter 1 - Table of Consent -
Chapter 16: Feather Light

Prisoner's Game Pt. 1 (Rowaelin)
Synopsis: Aelin Galathynius never thought of herself as a vengeful woman. Until her boyfriend not only testifies, but leads a case against her that lands her in prison for the rest of her life. Post I-Love-You's. He didn't believe her, and she's about to show him that not only is she innocent, he made the worst mistake of his life betting against her. To a woman with nothing but time, life's just a game, after all.

The cinderblock wall dug into her back uncomfortably as she reclined against it, the air in the room was stale, and she hadn't showered in two days. By any measurement, Aelin Galathynius was far from her best.
And yet she somehow managed to look perfectly at ease--happy even--as she lounged in her cell, toying with the ends of her too-long hair.
It was a ruse, of course, just a little trick to piss off the man currently stomping into her space. By the flare of Rowan Whitehorn's eyes, it worked.
"Hello, Rowan," she greeted pleasantly, giving him a little smile and acting like it wasn't taking everything in her not to use the makeshift knife under her pillow to gut him like the spineless coward he was.
She could tell, even across her 8x12 cell, that he was gritting his teeth and fighting a similar action.
The heel of his expensive Italian loafers clicked as he walked across the space to the small table and took a seat at the steel chair in front of it. He tried to push it out further, but stopped when he realized it was bolted to the floor.
"Aelin," he said back, none of the so-obvious anger he was feeling present in his voice. "Been a long time."
Eight years, six months, three weeks, two days, and thirteen hours.
Not that she was counting or anything.
She nodded her agreement, reclining further on the bed and crossing her legs as if she was in the finest dress she owned, not a faded orange jumpsuit.
"What brings you to my side of town, Rowan? Here to finally switch sides and represent me?"
Dressed in a two-thousand dollar suit and tie, hair perfectly gelled back, he looked like he was successful a lawyer meeting with a wealthy client, but they both knew the last thing he'd ever do was work for her.
"You know why I'm here."
She did indeed, but she still said, "I must be exceptionally smart to know why you've come all the way here-"
"Cut the shit," he snapped, finally losing a bit of his cool. He regained it quickly, though, and continued, "I want to know how you did it."
She frowned at her split ends. "Did what?"
Rowan waited until she looked at him to respond. "You know what."
Sighing so deeply it should've rattled the walls, she said, "I can't believe I've spent the last eight years thinking you underestimated my intelligence. You clearly think I'm some sort of oracle genius."
Rowan mimicked her sigh, and she bit her lip to stifle a laugh.
Probably trying to stall, he spent a moment looking at her cell, at the completely bare walls and lack of photographs. All she had was the tally marks drawn in pencil on one wall and a dusty chess set sitting on the table.
When he'd taken inventory of those two things, he sat and just looked at her.
It was clear she wouldn't admit to knowing exactly why he sat in front of her, and he was simply putting off being the one to fold.
Predictable, proud little man.
Eventually, he took his loss and said, "I want to know how you managed to rob me from inside the most secure prison in Rifthold."
She smiled, a full, undulated smile she hadn't used in a long time.
She'd been planning this moment since the day the bars had locked behind her, and it felt damn good to finally see it come to fruition.
According to what she'd heard, definitely not what she knew from personal experience, the private vault in Rowan's apartment had been broken into. Apparently, only one thing was missing: an antique dagger that had been handed down in the family and was now worth over a million bucks.
"Why do you think it was me?" she asked, still smiling.
He gritted his teeth some more, and she internally snickered at the idea he'd have permanent tooth damage because of her. Something else to remember her by.
Green eyes spitting flames at her, he growled, "You left a goddamn business card."
Aelin forced her eyes up to the empty bed above her head, trying her hardest not to laugh. "Maybe I'm being framed?"
"Your fingerprints were on it."
She did laugh then, then laughed some more when his eyes narrowed. He looked like he was about to strangle her. "Rowan, in case you haven't noticed, I'm incarcerated."
She gestured around them to her cell to prove her point.
The bastard just smiled.
Of course he knows that, she thought bitterly, forcing her hand back to her lap and away from where it'd started to creep toward the pillow.
"So how would I rob you?" she asked, getting her mind back on track.
"That's what you're going to tell me," he demanded angrily. "I want to know how you got out of here, got all the way across Rifthold, broke into my apartment, and stole from me without any surveillance camera picking it up."
Aelin ran a hand through her hair, fluffing it just right. When she caught sight of the impatience on his face, she fluffed it some more and readjusted the thin jacket on her shoulders.
It was always too damn cold in this place. She hadn't been warm in almost nine years.
Because of him.
Just for that, she fluffed her hair some more.
Then she said simply, "I didn't."
"Stop lying!" he shouted at her, eyes flashing.
She wasn't, but that was besides the point.
"Fine." She rolled her eyes like he'd won. "I got my cousin to-"
"Aedion spent the night in Wendlyn. His travel is verified, and there are at least a hundred eye witnesses that witnessed him singing karaoke all night. Stop. Fucking. Lying."
Once again, she wasn't lying.
Aedion sure as hell hadn't been in Wendlyn last night. She'd just wanted to make sure his alibi was air-tight as planned.
Sighing again, she asked, "Rowan, even if I did do it, why the hell would I tell you about it?"
His jaw worked for a moment, and she could tell whatever he was about to say was difficult for him. "I'll get time off your sentence if you tell me what you've done with it."
She tried not to laugh, but she couldn't help it.
It burst out of her, full and uncontrollable, and she flopped over on the dirty mattress and howled for a good few minutes.
He glared at her, looking for all the world like he was experiencing a portion of the rage she was made of, but regardless of the threat in his eyes, she took her time composing herself.
"I'm serving ten consecutive life sentences, you idiot."
One for each and every one of her "victims."
"I'll make it nine," he offered generously.
"Even if I was a cat, that'd still leave me dying in a prison cell. Offer me something else."
He just glared at her, unwilling to give her anything she could actually use or want. Just like she'd expected.
"That's what I thought. So no, Rowan Whitehorn, I'm not accepting your little deal. You can think I robbed you all you want; hell, you can even know, in your famous gut, that I did it." She tilted her head, a cruel smile filling her lips. "But it isn't about what you believe, it's about what you can prove. Isn't that right?"
His eyes shuttered at the words, and just like that, they were sucked into the memory of all those years ago.
~Eight years ago~
~Rowan~
Rowan rolled over, edging away from the woman next to him carefully as to not wake her.
Her hair was spread out on his chest, her soft hand was on his stomach, and her leg was draped over his. By all accounts, she was all over him.
And it felt so fucking good.
He'd never met anyone like Aelin before. Anyone so full of life, so hilariously open.
It was like she was constantly on fire, flitting from one place to the next with endless energy and jabs about him being too old and slow.
"What are you going?" she murmured, nails digging in slightly to keep him where he was.
"To get some water. Go back to sleep."
He leaned down and kissed her brow, and she sighed happily and rolled over. Like a total cliché, he watched her sleep for a moment, trying to get his feelings under control.
They'd been seeing each other for less than a year, but he couldn't imagine his life without her. He was in love with her, and if the way she acted and smiled around him was any indication, she loved him, too.
He ran a thumb over her cheekbone, smiling when she tilted her face into his touch.
He was whipped, and he didn't even care.
Rowan shook his head at himself, pulled on a pair of boxers, padded to the kitchen, and held a glass under the faucet.
Then frowned as it sputtered.
He figured he'd at least make himself useful, knowing damn well she would never agree to call the plumber when she could "figure out how to fix it herself on Youtube."
So he knelt down in her kitchen and opened the cabinet door, trying to see what the problem with the pipe was.
Except he never got that far.
His eyes got stuck on the piece of paper sticking out under a false piece of wood covering the back panel.
Knowing it was wrong to pry but somehow unable to stop himself, he tugged the paper loose.
Then fell backwards to his ass, heart hammering and brain spinning as he read it over and over again.
The list of names wasn't long, but all ten of the people on it were highly distinguished members of society.
And they were all dead.
He wouldn't know that, since the death of the last person on the list wasn't even public record yet, but he was the attorney working with the police to find the killer.
Why did she have this list?
And what did the numbers next to the names mean?
One way or another, he knew he had to find out. He also knew he couldn't ask her. He was in too deep, too unbiased to know whether or not she was lying.
He didn't trust himself with her, so he'd have to go the traditional route.
He took a picture of the paper quickly, tucking it back where he'd found it. He snuck back in the room to get dressed, leaving her a note he had to go to work.
He thought he was going to be sick as he left her apartment, a feeling suspiciously similar to dread coiling in his stomach.
There was only one way she could know that last name, only one explanation that made sense.
But he had to know for sure. Had to know if he'd been an idiot this past year; an idiot who'd spent almost every night sleeping next to the killer he'd been searching for.
So he started investigating his girlfriend.
Six days later, he found the security deposit boxes and the murder weapons inside, still covered in dried blood that would be matched to the victims. All with Aelin's prints on them.
Two days after that, the woman he'd thought was the love of his life was arrested on ten counts of murder.
Despite the tears she shed, despite the promises she made to him, despite the love she claimed to have for him, Rowan told the cops everything.
Even though he couldn't imagine her killing anyone.
"It doesn't matter what I believe, it matters what I can prove."
That was the last thing he'd said to her, right as she was being dragged out of the court room and yelling at him to believe her.
The truth of the matter was that when it came down to it, he didn't trust her enough. The facts were against her, everyone on the jury had been against her, and in the end, Rowan was too.
~Present~
~Aelin~
Rowan shook his head, almost like he needed to clear it from the memory they'd obviously both been immersed in, and she smiled.
She hoped what happened all those years ago still haunted him, hoped he went to sleep at night thinking about her and the betrayal he'd served to her on a silver platter.
The first year of her sentence, she was so lost in emotion--in the rage and confusion and deep, deep hurt--that she couldn't bring herself to do anything.
He hadn't even bothered to ask her first. That's what had hurt the worst.
He'd seen that stupid, stupid list and had jumped to the first conclusion possible.
She knew it had looked bad, had looked like she was guilty, but she'd thought that if the worst happened, he'd at least ask her to explain before slapping the cuffs on her.
But he hadn't. She'd gone to prison, and his career had exploded into stardom from the success of the case.
"See, Rowan, when you refused to accept any other explanation other than the easy one, you made a mistake. Because I didn't kill those people."
He rolled his eyes. "Aelin-"
"And I'm not only going to prove it," she continued as if he hadn't spoken, "I'm going to ruin your precious little life while I do it. Just like you did mine."
She stood, put a hand on the steel table, and leaned over him.
"If you want it to stop, all you have to do is drop these bullshit murder charges and issue a public apology for locking me up in the first place."
He stood too, so close his loafers brushed the toe of her dusty, prison issued sneakers.
"That's never going to happen," he promised, voice uncompromising and angry.
Aelin smiled, having predicted his reaction down to the facial expression.
His pride, she'd decided, would be the first thing to go.
She reached around him to slide the pawn on the chess board forward, leaned in even further, and whispered, "Let the game begin, then."

Color-Coded Deck
“ Once again Rouxls challenges Swatch to a battle of wits- though this time it doesn't exactly go as planned. “
SwatchKaard fic!
Bc I saw that there were none and so I had to do smth about it, click the read more to view! (Also check it out on ao3 if it’s easier for y’all to read there!
It had been another long day at the cafe, working various loud-mouthed customers that seemed never ending in Castle Town. Swatch has to wonder if moving out here was worth it, putting up with some of the patrons here almost made it not. The bird sighs, making the final rounds while the swatchlings finish cleaning up for the night. As the final chores and tasks are completed, Swatch excuses the swatchlings to head home and rest for tomorrow, staying behind to finish up the managerial paperwork. There was always more work to do, and Swatch had no time to rest until it was completed. Such was life. The same routine that they were so accustomed to, it didn't truly bother them really. In fact, Swatch enjoyed the brief moment of quiet and privacy of being alone in the cafe.
As the last swatchling exits, Swatch double checks the store before meandering towards to flip the sign from "open" to "closed". However, as they move to flip the sign, there's a glowing flash of light, causing Swatch to lift his arm to block out the glare before it dissipates. Oh no. A feeling of knowing dread nestles in their gut.
Before Swatch can react, a blue hand rattles the door, pushing it against Swatch who had finally moved to try and hold it shut. Of COURSE it just had to be him…
A loud shrill voice echoes through the crack in the door, "Greetings thou most commonest worm-avian! I haveth decided to graceth thine nighteth with thy presence!" Swatch inwardly groans, releasing the door and taking a step back to allow the other to dramatically swing it open and saunter through the now open doorway.
Rouxls Kaard.
Truly, could Swatch ever catch a break?
"What might you be doing here Kaard? Need I remind you that you have been banned from the premises." Swatch crosses their arms across their chest, false niceties dripping off of their voice, trying not to let their impatience shine through.
Rouxls tuts, wagging a finger in the air, "That waseth at thou previousth establishmente, whiche waseth the highesteth forme of slandereth I haveth ever been subjectedeth too mindeth thou, howevereth, I haveth not been bannedeth here! So thy musteth allowth my graciouse presence to be bestowedeth upon thy grounds." A smug look sits on his face, chest puffed out proudly, 'sneakily' gesturing to the sign that was still flipped to "open".
Swatch resists rolling his eyes, a part of them wondering if Rouxls even knew the cafe's hours...probably not. Though they supposed Rouxls was right, he had not been banned from this cafe. Maybe he would be within the upcoming days, it was inevitable really, but for now he wasn't and Swatch was left with their hands full. With a sigh, they consider trying to explain that to Rouxls, but they figure that Rouxls wouldn't listen to that...whenever the self acclaimed "duke of puzzles" set his mind on something there was no way to get him to listen to anything else. Swatch knew that firsthand.
"Well, here you are then...arriving just as I was closing. What can I do for you Kaard?" Swatch keeps it simple, but not without a small jab, moving his arms behind his back, standing straight with his beak perked up just slightly. A mixture of professionalism and their own pettiness that made them want to show off how much better he was, especially around Rouxls. They wouldn't admit it, but they did enjoy the competition that Rouxls consistently brought to their doorstep…that is, if you could call it a competition.
Grin widening, Rouxls whips out a foreign deck of cards, sauntering past Swatch, and slamming it down onto a nearby table. Then he spins on his heel to face Swatch once again, face nearly splitting into two with how wide his grin was, and threads his fingers together. Swatch raises a single eyebrow, gaze looking over the strange deck of cards, before looking back at Rouxls, awaiting whatever long-winded explanation that was about to be given.
“I have cometh to challengeth thee to a duelth of wits!” Rouxls makes a grand gesture towards the table, "Thoust three heroes bestowedeth upon thy a gift,” Meaning, Rouxls probably whined until they gave it to him, “A supremeth gifte thou shalt not be wastedeth! I shall knocketh thou offeth thine pedestalth like a batteringeth rame knockingeth downeth thy castle doorsth! ” He motions for Swatch to sit down at one end of the table, waiting expectantly with shining eyes. Swatch opts not to say that a battering ram knocks open doors and not off, but that was their petty side talking.
Inhaling deeply, Swatch slowly moves over to the seat, placing a hand on the seat and pulling it out. Sure the polite thing to do was pull the seat out for Rouxls- as was their job, but they were not going to give Rouxls that satisfaction. His eyes bore into Rouxls, half expecting the guy to pull out another handful of worms and run off, but he seemed much too invested in the task at hand. Always with the games and puzzles that one, truly Swatch had to wonder how many times would Rouxls have to lose before he gives up?
“I foughte againsteth thy three heroes valiantlyth, takingeth thou on in thine own gameth. Sucheth a nobleth duty of thy to do, no?” Rouxls laughs, swiftlying moving to the seat across from Swatch, “Twas a longe and arduousth battle of brainse, and beingeth thy generouse and benevolenteth soul thy am, could not beareth to standeth thy thoughte of thrashingeth thine darling water-beetle’s closesteth allies. So I humbledeth thyself and allowedeth thine three hereos to besteth thy in battleth unscathedeth to spareth thine ailsth.” Meaning, Rouxls utterly lost.
“So you...‘valiantly’ turned tail and came crawling to me instead?” Swatch lets out a quiet scoff, unable to keep it contained at Rouxls’ blatant attempt to save face when anyone who knew Rouxls would know better than to believe the theatrics he was spouting. Easing himself into the chair, Swatch crosses his arms across his chest, “Alright then, I can spare a moment on your childish games. Would you care to explain the rules of the game you have so dutifully brought to my doorstep while I was trying to close up shop for the night? I would like to get this over with so that I may go home.”
Rouxls’ eyes narrow at Swatch, dramatically pointing across the table over at the bird, “Thou do not intimidateth me worm-avian!” Rouxls huffs, “Our battleth will be througheth the mighty gameth of what thy lightenereths call “Uno”! Whereupon thy willeth finally proveth my titleth of butler supremeth over thy worm-avian!” His point moves towards the deck, “Draweth foulest beast!”
Swatch makes no indication of moving, “I cannot draw if I do not know how to play, or are you resorting to needing unfair advantages to win? Truly, I expected more from you...” The bird trails off, feigning a sigh, watching Rouxls’ face light up in a vibrant embarrassed flush. He was so easy to read...it was kind of amusing really. A small smirk etches onto Swatch’s face at the sight.
“Of couseth not! I wouldeth never bringeth thy illesteth omens upon thy nameth! I haveth no need for sucheth ‘advantages’, thy willeth win no mattereth the circumstanceseth of oureth battleth as thy am thy grand duke of puzzles!” Rouxls covers for his mistake quickly, moving to cover the back of his hand with his mouth, “As for thine rules…” He hesitates for a moment, thinking, “I...shalt not wasteth my time explaining! Thereth is rule cardeths for a reason!” The irony… Rouxls paws at the deck, pulling out the card with the written words littered over its surface, before sliding it towards Swatch.
“Make haste! I do not haveth all nighte.” Rouxls puffs out his chest, arrogance dripping from his voice. Swatch gives Rouxls a cold glare at his words, a part of them still bitter they were the one being kept up this fine night. Quickly Swatch skims over the rules of this ‘Uno’ game, a simple color and symbol type of card game- first to get rid of all the cards in their hands wins. Easy enough.
“Alright, daresay I believe that I am ready now.” Swatch carefully sets the card back down on the table, reaching over to draw seven cards off of the top of the deck. There was a wide arrangement of colors, mostly blue ironically, and a couple of special cards with effects that they would need to play strategically. After Swatch draws his cards, Rouxls quickly follows suit, flipping over the top card to reveal a green number card to begin the game.
“With thy graciouseth self, I shalt allow thee to make thy first moveth!” Rouxls confidently announces, leaning forward with a tight grip on his cards. Swatch rolls his eyes again, looking over his hand and rubbing the bottom of his beak with his free hand. Then, without a word he places another green number card on top of the discard pile, a simple play to begin with.
The game continues on like this for a few rounds, with every turn Rouxls announcing how great he was or how he was going to win and Swatch shooting back with some sort of rebuttal that only served to fluster and make Rouxls even more agitated. Swatch isn’t sure why he liked poking at Rouxls as much as he did, truly Rouxls was the only one who managed to consistently break through his customer service facade.
It was...nice Swatch supposed. As idiotic as Rouxls was and his constant pestering to try and best Swatch, it was nice. A break in an otherwise methodical and boring day. As much as Swatch hated to admit it, they had grown to have fun playing with Rouxls.
However, the peaceful part of the game soon came to an end when Swatch placed down a draw two card onto the discard pile as Rouxls hand seemed to lessen with every turn, complete with the biggest smirk on their face.
“Now, if you could please draw, I can make my next move.” The bird hums, watching in curiosity as Rouxls sputters, slamming his hands on the table.
“Whateth is this sorceryeth!?” Rouxls glares at the cards as if they were the ones at fault, “Why musteth I loseth my turne? Draweth two!?” He huffs indignantly, Swatch raising an eyebrow.
“...You read the rules too, didn’t you Kaard? Being the ‘grand duke of puzzles’ yourself, surely you know about the special cards, right?” Their voice drips with faux sympathy, sounding more condescending than nice, Swatch stifling a chuckle at the sudden turn of events.
The rule card sits open on the table, Rouxls glancing between it and Swatch with a growing scowl on his face.
“Of courseth I know thy rules! I haveth bestedeth the most strongesteth beings in thy battleth of Uno!” Rouxls mind whirs in thought, “Thy justeth...won so quickly thateth card nevereth neededeth to be usedeth!” With a burning embarrassed flush once against rising to his face, Rouxls quickly covers his own ineptitude at the game, having bitterly come here after losing to the three heroes to try and best Swatch once again to try and lick his wounds.
Rouxls snatches the rule card after that, Swatch covering his mouth as they let out a snicker while Rouxls quickly skims through it. After a few moments, Rouxls throws the card back down, once again puffing out his chest.
"I shalt do this draweth two as thou cards stateth, but feareth not! Thy shalt stille remaineth victoriouse in the endth!" Rouxls swipes at the deck, a little frustrated if Swatch had to guess, gripping the cards in his hand even tighter.
Frustration of the evening having long since melted into amusement, Swatch rests an elbow onto the table to use his hand to keep his head propped up as he continues to play. Carefully setting another card onto the pile, Rouxls following suit a little too fast.
"I am afraid that this little game will end how it always does, though, I suppose that is why you challenged me after everyone left. Couldn't bear to take the bitter taste of defeat in the face of the public again, could you?" Swatch begins to idly speak, deciding to make some conversation even if it sounded more like he was targeting Rouxls. Truthfully they just wanted to see how the man would react, it was always so entertaining to see Rouxls theatrics in action when he wasn't purposefully being a thorn in your side, and Swatch found it more amusing than they should.
Rouxls laughs haughtily, gaze focused onto his cards as he keeps playing, "Fool! I wouldeth happily beeneth a target for thine adoringeth publice, howevereth I waseth ever so busyeth with thy duties of greateth importanceth that I hadeth to scavengeth thine timeth to graceth thee withe thy prescenceth. Thou shouldeth be gratefule thy oh-so busyeth scheduleth allowede it!" Truthfully he had been lurking around the outside of the cafe for hours, procrastinating and planning out his "grand entrance" until the store had reached closing. So alas, here they were. Sure the patronizing laughter when Rouxls had lost prior bothered him but there was no way he was going to let Swatch be right!
"Ah yes, lucky me." Swatch deadpans, smirk still hanging on their beak, "I cannot imagine how else I would like to be spending my evening. Why would I want to be relaxing at home after a long day of work when I could be playing a silly card game with you?" The chirp, sarcasm edging in their words.
"Tsk tsk, thee are justeth afraide of losingeth. Thou can admite it!" Rouxls slams another card down. "For I shall sooneth claime thy victory in oneth fell swoopeth, prepare thyself worm-avian!"
Swatch scoffs, "Afraid of losing to you? My apologies Kaard, but something actually has to be a reality for me to be scared of it." Rouxls, childishly, sticks out his tongue. He would not claim it to be childish if you called it out, however.
Setting his own card down, Swatch calls out 'Uno', holding his single card in his grasp. Meanwhile Rouxl still had multiple cards left, there was no chance of him winning.
Yet somehow, Rouxls hadn't started throwing a fit yet. Usually when it was clear he was to lose, he would get even more rambunctious than usual- yet this time Rouxls still had his cocky grin, staring at his cards. Swatch's smirk fades, eyes narrowing, knowing that the other man was up to something. Of course it wasn't a normal card game, this was Rouxls, something unexpected always happens with him around.
The bird tenses, awaiting the surprise bound to happen. Rouxls grin gets wider, before he cackles wildly, "Aha! Thou hasn't madeth thine finale moveth! I, Rouxls Kaard, shalt noweth claime thy victory!" Swatch's eyebrows furrowed together, there was no possible way-
Rouxls slams down a red skip card atop the red number card.
Swatch skips his turn, Rouxls putting down a red draw two card- causing Swatch to skip his turn again. He hesitantly reaches over to draw two cards.
There's no way…
Rouxls tosses down another draw two card, this time in green. Swatch's grip on his cards get ever tighter as they stare at the pile of discarded cards.
"I dareth say this is wheneth thy say 'Uno'!" Rouxls says triumphantly, Swatch's gaze snapping up in disbelief. Their beak opens and shuts again, dragging two more cards off of the deck.
"Sayeth thou prayers worm-avian! For tonighte, I reigneth victoriouse!" Swatch watches Rouxls dramatically leap from his seat, pushing the chair back, and slamming down his final card with all the energy in his being.
The card was to choose your own color and draw four cards. The biggest insult to injury that the game of Uno could give.
Swatch stares in utter shock- he had...actually lost. Rouxls had actually made a good play and won the game. Rouxls Kaard did. The guy who could barely craft a feasible puzzle on his own- outwitting them of all people. It was an impossibility, and yet, here it was staring Swatch in the face.
Amidst the frustration of losing, Swatch couldn't help but feel...impressed. That is, until Rouxls starts speaking again.
"There!! Noweth thou see thine wretchedeth worm-avian! Thy am superiore to thou inst everyeth way! Everytimeth before noweth has beeneth nothing moreth than a fluketh! For this is thy proveth! I am trulye bettereth than thou!" He laughs loudly, kicking a foot onto the chair seat and propping himself up into a pose with one hand on his hip and one covering his laughter. "Henceforth thou shalt bowe downeth and call me butler supremethe, thy grand duke of puzzles- Rouxls Kaard!" A pause in his triumph, looking over at Swatch, " ...Thou hearest me lesser worm-avian?"
Swatch sets down his card, controlled, carefully. Rouxls boasting makes the guy much less impressive and instead Swatch simmers into annoyance and frustration. Rouxls got lucky. And Swatch was never going to hear the end of it. A scowl breaks his beak in half as he stands stiffly upright, keeping it shut to not say anything without thinking it through first. Every motion was so strictly controlled, his thoughts whirling around and around until-
Swatch was never going to hear the end of it...unless…
They get an idea, sure it was going to be demeaning and incredibly out of poor taste in Swatch's opinion- but it would be better than anyone finding out about their loss to Rouxls. Besides, after working for the Queen, demeaning had lost its meaning to Swatch. At least this time they were going to be the one in control. So a distraction, enough embarrassment so where Rouxls never wants to talk about this moment to anyone.
Swatch steps out from the table, moving over towards the side Rouxls was on, who merely stared at them in confusion.
Abruptly in one smooth motion, Swatch bows to Rouxls, who they can hear sputter in surprise. A pleased grin appears on Swatch's beak, hidden from sight.
"I surely hope that will suffice, butler supreme. You are truly the duke of puzzles, Sir Rouxls Kaard, unmatched in his fantastical puzzle prowess." Swatch pulls himself upright, feeling the grating feeling of forced praise and ridiculous titles being pulled from his throat. However, the look on Rouxls face was worth it- the bug-eyed look of pure shock combined with the fact his cocky smirk had been replaced with a nervous smile- all the while his face seemed to be a darker blue than usual. Oh this was worth it.
"Uh...Yes! Thou is correcteth and shouldeth now understande thou place beneatheth me! I maketh the ordereth now worm-avian, thou can no longere banneth thy from thou fineth establishmente and musteth admiteth always thateth thy am forevere bettereth than thou! Lest thou suffereth thy crippling humilationeth of thou defeate once moreth." Stepping off of the chair, Rouxls manages to get out, his voice wavering at the start- a crack in his carefully portrayed persona. Startled by how...well Swatch was taking it- he had expected him to get mad or bite back or just...something. This wasn't like their usual banter at all and Rouxls wasn't sure what was going on.
Swatch listens intently, nodding along to show that they were listening. Even if they, personally, thought it to be pure nonsense, they did not let it show.
Their head so carefully tilts to the side for a moment, "Beneath you?" They coo, taking a calculated step forward into Rouxls space.
An arm casually snakes around Rouxls waist, pulling the smaller man closer. He lets out a surprise squeak- trying to stammer out something before he is shushed by Swatch's next words, "Would you not prefer to be side by side? After all, you have proven yourself to be better than I- your chosen adversary since the day we met." He chuckles, "With how obsessed you are with me, dare I say you were trying to court me- hm?" A soft chuckle lingers on his lips as he watches Rouxls nearly melt out of pure flustered nerves.
It was…
Hm. Cute. For Rouxls.
"WHAT? I AM NOT-" Rouxls gasps, much louder than intended, his smarmy accent seemingly fading for a moment before he gulps for a breath trying to readjust himself, "Do not thinketh so highly of thouself! I couldeth care lesse abouteth thou, thy games were merelyeth a simpleth pastime, a pleasureth that thy bestowedeth upon thou!"
Leaning ever so closer to Rouxls, Swatch's voice lowers, a quiet coo for Rouxls' ears only, "Then why is it you always throw a fit when I'm too busy to play with you? You claim to just want to prove you're better than me, but you've done that now, so what next? Honestly, Rouxls, just spare us the trouble and tell me how you really feel."
A hum.
"If you just wanted to go on dates you could have simply asked." It's said with a wink.
Rouxls chokes, and Swatch thinks they finally have this under control, soon to be wrapped up in a nice pretty bow. Sure was this a little cruel? Perhaps, but Swatch kept finding it so damn endearing, it was frustrating. So selfishly wanting to see more of Rouxls' reactions.
But of course, this was Rouxls Kaard they were talking about here. When did anything involving him go as planned?
Suddenly there are hands grabbing the side of their head, and Swatch can feel his feathers poof out in surprise at the sudden motion. Before they can react, Rouxls practically slams his forehead into Swatch's, keeping it there and pressing hard as if to challenge the bird.
"Thou sauveth trickery shalt not wortheth on I!" Rouxls announces, before adding his own rebuttal, "Maybe THOU is thee one courting I? Thou claim to be bettereth than I but hereth you stand, arm arounde thy waist. If thou really haveth better thingeths to do, theneth why are thou hereth and noteth at thou homestead?"
The two were impossibly close now, pressed together as a different kind of tension fills the air around them. Swatch can feel Rouxls panting shaky breaths on his beak, the man's false confidence easily seen through, yet- Swatch stutters. And they never stutter.
Then suddenly- his arms are empty and the simple touch is gone as soon as it had started, and Swatch let out a breath they hadn't realized they had been holding.
"Alas, I am sureth thy leech of a darlingeth prince needs thy attentione!" Rouxls skitters towards the door, "I bideth thee a bittersweet adieu! For now thee willeth be without thine majestic presenceth, whicheth I am sureth you shalt miss. However, I must informeth thou that I, Rouxls Kaard, willeth not be easily impressedeth with thy simplest flatteries..." He pauses in his escape, looking back at Swatch before glancing down at the floor looking a little...unsure, adding on just a little quieter, "But I shalt be backe, I may haveth won thy battle, but not thy war- so...uh...prepareth thouself for thy return!"
With his final words, which were possibly just an excuse to keep seeing Swatch even though he's already gotten his win, Rouxls escapes through the door and flees faster than Swatch had ever seen him move before. The bird just...watches him go, dumbfounded at the sudden turn of events.
Swatch stands there for a moment, blinking, wondering if that even just happened. Rouxls rebuttal swirling around in his brain, them? Courting Rouxls? A ridiculous assumption, entirely out of left field. And yet…
Swatch sighs, smoothing down his ruffled feathers, Rouxls was right- if Swatch wanted to they could have easily booted out the nuisance and went home. Yet, Swatch played Rouxls game. And every game before. The bird’s fingers flex, still feeling the faint ghost of Rouxls in his grip, as if it were haunting them- taunting them really.
…
Swatch rubs his face with a hand, a flush rising to his cheeks. This whole time they had thought they were the one in control, but unfortunately they had long gotten swept up in the uncontrollable whirlwind that was Rouxls Kaard.

5 - This is defiantly not a tampon
Completed, 26 chapters, “So, you’re the babysitter, huh ?” Rodrick Heffley x black fem reader
Content/trigger warning: drug mention
It had been a few days since the dinner fiasco, you had completely forgotten about it except for one thing. Rodrick or eyeliner boy, or dipper van boy, or delivery boy. Honestly, he had too many things to go by. It was weird to see him and not recognize him, thankfully he hadn’t recognized you. I mean, you at three in the morning ordering food versus you all dressed up for dinner were definitely two different people.
You were blasting music with your led lights flashing colors. You were rearranging your closet, getting rid of old clothes and planning future outfits. A random song played on Spotify, you picked up your phone to skip the song and saw a text from an unsaved number.
“𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚜𝚑𝚘𝚞𝚕𝚍𝚗’𝚝 𝚋𝚎 𝚙𝚕𝚊𝚢𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚖𝚞𝚜𝚒𝚌 𝚝𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝚕𝚘𝚊𝚍 𝚊𝚝 𝚕𝚎𝚊𝚜𝚝 𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚑𝚊𝚟𝚎 𝚐𝚘𝚘𝚍 𝚝𝚊𝚜𝚝𝚎, 𝚋𝚎𝚝𝚝𝚎𝚛 𝚝𝚑𝚊𝚗 𝚒 𝚎𝚡𝚙𝚎𝚌𝚝𝚎𝚍” -𝚛
You looked at the text in confusion, the number wasn’t saved, not even a little nickname to indicate who they were.
*wait, they can hear my music* You thought.
You went to the windows and looked for cars or people that could be watching you. You quickly scanned outside and saw a white van.
*the diaper band boy*
“𝚊𝚛𝚎 𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚠𝚊𝚝𝚌𝚑𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚖𝚎 𝚜𝚝𝚊𝚕𝚔𝚎𝚛, 𝚠𝚎 𝚑𝚊𝚍 𝚍𝚒𝚗𝚗𝚎𝚛 𝚘𝚗𝚌𝚎 𝚌𝚑𝚒𝚕𝚕” -𝚢/𝚗
You played it cool, then went back to arranging your closet. You didn’t want to focus too hard on him or bring more attention to yourself. You turned the lights off and lowered the music.
“𝚍𝚘𝚗’𝚝 𝚝𝚞𝚛𝚗 𝚎𝚟𝚎𝚛𝚢𝚝𝚑𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚘𝚏𝚏 𝚗𝚘𝚠, 𝚢𝚘𝚞’𝚟𝚎 𝚊𝚕𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚍𝚢 𝚐𝚘𝚝 𝚖𝚢 𝚊𝚝𝚝𝚎𝚗𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗.” -𝚛
After reading the text, you thought to add a contact name in case you guys continued to text. Your finger slipped and hit the call button. As the phone rang, you quickly thought of things to say.
“do you want something or are you just gonna watch my house all day”
“Hmm, if I did want something, would you be willing to give it to me?”
“I-” You froze at his response, what if he did want something and if so what was it.
He chuckled on the phone, breaking the silence.
“Just come outside, y/n.” He said then hung up.
*oh my god, he remembers my name*
You panicked and thought it over, you and a boy in his van in the middle of the day asking for “something”. You put on a matching two piece jumpsuit and walked outside. Your mom always said you needed to get out more and this counts, right ? He was parked across the street waiting for you. He rolled down the window to reveal his grinning face.
“Wow, you really came out, I expected you to chicken out. I thought blood suckers burned in the sun.”
You rolled your eyes and got into the passenger side.
“You’re still holding onto the vampire thing, you really need new material. So uh, what am I doing here, diaper boy?”
“Wow diaper boy as if I’ve never heard that one before” He said in a mocking voice.
“Listen y/n, I hate to admit it but you’re my kind of girl and I think we could be great friends. So today we’ll hang out a bit and get to know each other on a more personal level.”
You looked at him if a confused face.
*My kind of girl, great friends, personal level* The fuck is he talking about.
“Okay, I’m gonna cut the crap your mom told my mom that you have no friends, so my mom forced me over here. I think we just play buddy for a bit and get the both off our backs.”
“First, it’s not my fault my old friends were backstabbing bitches and second, can we go get food, I haven’t eaten all day.”
“Fine, I’ll buy you food but you have to help me with deliveries.”
You rolled your eyes and sighed.
The first and only delivery of the day was a large one. Someone had ordered 13 pizzas, 6 large fries and 12 large sodas. The pizza place wouldn’t deliver it themselves for fear of card theft or prank call, so you both had too. By the time you had gotten to the pizza place only 5 pizzas were ready, this gave you time to roam. First, you started with Rodrick’s van to get a feel of what type of person he was.
You rummaged through the mess of his van, besides trash, old homework and the stupid number cards there were a few interesting things. You found a black and white guitar, as you picked up the guitar holding it in your arms to play it Rodrick snuck up behind you. He grabbed a drumstick and hit you over the head, causing you to drop the guitar and quickly turn around.
“Ow, you asshole. Did you just hit me with a drumstick.”
“That’s what you get for searching my van, rat.”
“If I’m a rat then you’re a slob, look at this. This and your room, I bet you haven’t seen the floor in months.”
You turned around to go back to the passenger seat when you felt something fall out of your pocket. You looked back and saw what it was, you looked at Rodrick to see if he was it too. His eyes were hyper focused on it, then he looked up at you and smirked. You ran to grab it, but Rodrick picked it up first.
“That’s not what you think it is, it’s a uhh tampon. I’m on my period.”
“y/n I might have slept through most of health class, but I know for sure that this is not a feminine hygiene product. But it is indeed an illegal substance.”
*huh? feminine hygiene product*
You tried to snatch it from his hands, but he quickly pulled his hands away from you.
“No, this is mine now and I think you will be helping me on these deliveries more often with no pay.”
“Why the fuck would I do that.” You snapped.
“Because if not your dear mother will soon know about her daughter illegal activity.”
“You have no proof.”
He went into his back pocket, pulled out his phone and took a picture. He turned the phone to face you, showing you the picture.
“This is all the proof I need.” He said, moving closer to you.
You knew you were fucked.
“You know what y/n?”
“What.”
He moved closer, you faced inches away from each other with a smug look on his face. Your eyes locked, his were enticing while yours were provoking.
“I think me and you, might make a really good pair after all.” He whispered then, grinning ear to ear.

Summer Nights (3)
A/N: INDEX
Warnings: alcohol, language, sexual alludes, and... that’s it??

So her name was Y/N.
Draco couldn't help himself but wonder about her for the past few days, after their encounter in the restaurant. As he thought more and more of her, he decided she was more of a changeable person, judging on what he had learned about her; timid and coy one day in the lobby when he first arrived, and plainly confident on another when she approached him to return his fucking wand.
And did she believe in that fictive tale about him playing a magician? Did she sense his sudden abashment when she started to question him on the subject?
He blamed himself for the whole situation, which could have never happened if he only were more careful. He assumed he had lost the wand when his mother furiously dragged him back to his hotel room from the bar he had stopped by for a while. Perhaps, it was when he had handed the receptionist, Y/N, the letter, and it just dropped out of his pocket as he was taking an envelope out.
Fortunately for him, it found its way back. So he didn't have to trouble his head with that now, right?
One issue, however, stuck to his thoughts and vividly came back every time he glanced at his hand, only to see blurry words written with a hard-to-efface ink. Of course, by none other than Y/N.
A few days back, she had scribbled her name and a number on his palm, and since then, he tried to figure out what it was for. He knew he couldn't walk out to the city and stop people in the middle of the pavement to ask for an explanation for the note because it would be as irrational and bizarre as it sounds. The second thought was to ask his mother for an additional conjecture about that by sending an owl. But then he quickly remembered, he didn't have access to any of owls here and -- so and so -- he didn't know the address Narcissa was staying at.
So both options were excluded.
Soon enough, however, the situation cropped up. Someday around six in the morning, still sound asleep and immersed in the dreams, the strange, alarming sound rang up in his bedroom, echoing off the walls and waking half of the death of him as he heard it. He flopped off his bed with the sheets falling along with him, and he began looking for the source of the noise. Then he noticed: a white handset and a set of ten digits next to it; he picked it up -- it was only a hotel checking up if he needed anything.
From then on, everything lined up and made a perfectly logical sense in his head -- it was a muggle device to communicate with each other. If you were desperate enough not to meet up with somebody in the real-life, you were likely to click nine digits and either meet with the receiver's voice or voicemail on the other side. So here was a purpose of the number.
Draco also discovered these things were so-called phones. And they were sold in various forms and types like the models of brooms in the Wizarding World -- from less to most exclusive ones. Little did his consciousness helped him, but after an hour, he was already out in the city and walking next to the shops' exhibitions and searching for an electronics store to buy himself one of those.
Why did he want to buy the phone? He could lie and say that it was only in case of emergency. But admitting truthfully to himself, he felt a nagging curiosity about those devices and wanted to understand this part of the muggle world. And something, more of a hunch than reasoning, told him that he soon might be needing one of those.
Later that day, after wandering for almost an hour and stepping into some cafeteria for lunch, he was finally holding a fucking iPhone in his hand. It had a lot of fancy shining buttons and a small, black partly-bitten apple on the back, and some kind of virtual assistant (at least that's what he had heard from a salesman) Siri with a very posh British accent. Having been advised to purchase it, Draco did so even without a second thought.
He paid for it with some muggle money his mother provided him before her departure, and walked out of the store, having it packed in a nice paper bag with a receipt and a SIM card. He decided on opening it when he reaches his room, and meanwhile, look around the area for some entertainment or something in those terms, to preoccupy himself.
Actually, Draco hadn't been too much in foreign countries, and hauling him out to Muggle London was a miracle, much more to Muggle Paris. He could find a similarity, but it was much different here -- cars honking at each other at the traffic jam; countless shops with clothes; restaurants with delicious food; people babbling at one another in French but also in Italian and German, and English. It was chaotic; it was loud, and he had to watch his feet in order to not trip over by someone else.
Draco felt lost in that mess. Random people encouraging him to visit the shops he would never intend to drop by, strangers pushing him in a rush and mumbling indistinct 'Sorry' for stepping on his shoes, some even too bothered to even look at him. Partly, he wished he had never listened to Narcissa and instead spending time with Thoe, Blaise, or whosoever and talking about irrelevant stuff like the score of the last Quiddich match (Banchory Bangers against Falmouth Falcons) or about the latest affairs with the Ministry of Magic.
And what was he even doing here?
In mere seconds, he decided on changing a route back again to the hotel instead of meandering aimlessly and optimistically, waiting for some godsend to find.
What he wasn't, however, considering was actually finding some godsend in front of the revolving doors of the hotel building.
Yet again, as if some supernatural powers brought them to the same place every time, he was standing on the opposite side of the door where Y/N. It was the late afternoon, so instead of wearing the usual white shirt in the composition of black jeans, she had a green top and striped, yellow shorts with a small watch on her wrist.
She was turned, slightly to the side, so it was her profile he saw as she waved probably at one of her friends, smiling broadly. Draco never really paid much attention to the girl, especially to her looks, but now as his eyes roamed over her standing figure in those a little too revealing clothes, he felt a gulp forming in his throat. Her hair was falling on her shoulders, the beam plastered to her face, and she seemed to be a radiating sphere of positivity.
For the last time, she blew her friend a kiss, and then she was looking at him, infinitely shocked at the sight of him behind the window, staring at her. Draco blinked, snatching out of thoughts.
Y/N made her way out, gripping her big handbag and throwing it hastily on the shoulder and a glowing grin waving over her face again. "Nice to see you again," she said. "I thought you would call."
He furrowed his brows, detecting the faint trace of hope in her voice and feeling his heart take up on the speed. "Well... I was just about to. In the room. I bought a phone..." He lifted the sack in his hand. "...and was about to dial your number."
"Really?" she asked, slightly startled and happy at the same time. She brushed some of her hair behind the ear. "Didn't you have the phone?"
"I left it at home." It was the quickest lie he could conceive. He playfully rolled his eyes, indicating the slight amusement at his alleged absentmindedness. "Just heading back from the shop."
She laughed at that. "Right." Suddenly, her cheeks were covered in a light scarlet, and she dropped her gaze at her feet for three seconds, as if she was about to share something very, very secretive with him. Then she was eyeing him again. "Listen... I've just ended a shift. Maybe you would like to go somewhere? I promised I'll show you around the most interesting spots. Are you up to that?"
Draco contemplated, taking in a small breath. Some part of him really lingered to give it a shot and go out with her, seeing where it carries them, as spontaneous as it was. It wasn't a date, and she was practically a stranger, but... what kind of a stranger! A quiet voice in his head told him this was what kept him away from the idea; disclosing his doubts -- her sparkling with joy eyes and the effect she had on him. A mere fact of him pondering the question was pure evidence it mattered to him, and he definitely tried to kick in with a good impression.
That left him with no more answer than: "Yeah, sure."
For some reason, Y/N let out a sigh of relief and relaxed a little, looking as if she was about to hear bad news but heard the contrary instead. "Great!" she exclaimed cheerfully. A little too cheerfully, she realized, as soon as she spoke up because the embarrassment welled up on her face. Yet another blush brushed her cheeks, and she chuckled at herself. "Sorry. Bad habits from the reception."
Now it was his turn to chuckle. He liked it, actually, but obviously wasn't going to say that out loud. "Don't mind," he assured her. "Shall we--"
"Before we do," Y/N cut him in, already guessing the upcoming rest of the sentence. "I suggest you leave that stuff..." She pointed her finger at the bag he was carrying. "...in the room. We might be wandering some hours in the heat. So it might not be the best idea."
Draco nodded, silently agreeing with her pertinent advice. "I'll meet you downstairs in... five minutes, then."
She shifted a little, still grinning like a maniac and watching him with sparkling eyes. "Okay," she said, as Draco was making to walk past her, feeling the strangest hint of excitement creeping in his chest. As he was nearing the doorway, he heard her shouting behind his back, "I'll be waiting here!" And the tiniest of his rare smiles formed on his lips.
XOXOXOXO
"So tell me something about yourself, Draco." Y/N looked at him, a light of interest entering her eyes.
As decided, they had met up a few minutes later in front of the entrance to the hotel and then took on the route. Draco had asked her about any potential propositions of where there should go, to which Y/N only smiled mysteriously and said it was a surprise.
So now they were walking hand-in-hand, taking almost the same pace as they strolled in the rhythm of the roads. The buzz still could be heard, and people prattling loudly, but this time -- as Draco noted -- instead of crowding in the center of the noise, Y/N led him through some stealthy alleys only a real dweller could know about. There were still laughs and talks coming, but much quieter.
"What do you want to know?" he asked, not quite comprehending how he should answer her question. He had been in some relationships, some successful and some not, but no one had really paid much interest in him. Not really him.
"Uh, you know. Where do you hail from, what are your hobbies, why did you come to France? Whatever you want, actually." Y/N chortled, offering him a small smile of encouragement. The sun rays were smoothly emphasizing her beauty; skin glistening under the daily light. Draco couldn't help himself but think of how her hands would feel on his shoulders and--
'Focus Draco,' he scolded himself for drifting far, far away with his imagination.
"Well," he started. "I'm from England, what you can guess by my accent. I play piano, learned Italian and Spanish, and...you know, basic stuff." He omitted the part he was a captain of his Quidditch team at school for almost five years which was his biggest pride. "My mother forced me to come here."
"Oh," Y/N seemed to be a little surprised by his confession because she made a fish-like face. "Didn't you want to come?"
"Not quite," Draco admitted truthfully. Before she was able to ask him for a reason for that, he outstripped her. "Had a tough time lately. My friend...died."
Y/N stared at him, mouth slightly agape, and in an instant, her expression turned from cheerful to a regretful one. "I'm sorry," she said, massive uncomfortableness visible on her face.
He shrugged, making his faultless poker face to the game as if it didn't affect him at all -- blank and uncaring. But it hit him. Always did. He didn't like to talk about his post-war experience; even recalling it in his mind was torture.
'If she only knew,' Draco thought. 'She wouldn't be so eager to get acquainted.'
Before he could pay off with as much interest as she did to him, Y/N was gesturing excitedly to the name on the corner of the building, located right next to the extensive, artificial beach with impeccably clean water. There were quite a few people enjoying themselves and sitting on the warm sand, but not throng as Draco could expect from a place like that. "Here we are!"
Not only the sand, but a minibar was there as well: a small deckhouse in the midway of the shore and pavement; a few wooden stools; and the bartender who was shaking a cocktail mixer in his hands.
Shortly after, however, the man behind the counter noticed them approaching. He shot Draco a brief look, and then his gaze landed straight at Y/N, who also perceived him glancing at her. He seemed to be happy at the sight of her, and his eyes swept momentarily over her figure, perhaps identifying if it really was a person he thought it was, and then he gestured for her to come closer. Y/N seized Draco's forearm, tugging him to come along with her, and Draco, left without any other choices, followed.
Y/N began speaking something French with him, and he heatedly answered her back in a sort of enthusiastic voice. Apparently, they must have known each other because, after seconds, they started joking around, laughing, and patting each others' shoulders like old friends. It took quite a moment, but the bartender eventually focused his attention on Draco, who was standing next to Y/N and was trying to make any sense out of the conservation. The man asked something, curiously arching his brow yet again at Y/N, who flushed suddenly. Clearly flustered with his question, she playfully smacked him at the top of his head and turned to face Draco.
"Sorry for that," she said, putting both of her elbows on the countertop and making a slight pout of guiltiness. "It's just an old friend of mine. I used to come here a lot in the past, so we know each other... pretty well, I guess."
That arose Draco's curiosity, and he didn't miss a chance to ask her. "Don't you come here anymore?"
"No." The readiness of this reply surprised him a little bit. She bit her lip and let her eyes drift at her shoes, which -- Draco noticed -- was her typical reaction when she was nervous. "I... I used this place to meet up with my boyfriend. My father didn't approve of our relationship -- he assumed there was something iffy about him and that he had bad intentions." Chuckling dryly, she tried to cover up her emotions, though the sadness was hitched to her voice. "He was right. He used me and then dumped me, saying it meant nothing."
Although he felt an urge to hug her, he held it back and stared at her, not really knowing what to say. Should he console her by telling her the man was a pig and she clearly deserved better? Or should he keep silent, only proving himself to be a good listener? It was very confusing for him to be around girls who cry and complain and expect reassurance in their words. He witnessed Pansy weeping a lot of times, but she was the one to instruct him what to do by throwing herself at him and lingering in the embrace. But Y/N was new to him, and it was no easy way to find out what she wanted him to say.
"Sucks," he uttered under his breath before the awareness kicked in.
What the fuck, you dolt?! Is it how you want to comfort her?
Fortunately, Y/N didn't receive his words as critically as he because her eyes lighted up, and she giggled softly. "Yeah... But I learned from that. I try to be warier now."
The bartender poked her suddenly on the shoulder, making some mumbling and incomprehensible sound. Y/N nodded and slightly tilted her head to have a better view of Draco. "Jean asks if you want a drink. He recommends Brave Bull. Brags that he can do the best one in the country."
"Mhm... Let it be it," he agreed, giving up on his usual liquor and dipping into more muggle-like specials. He attempted to force a smile on the lips, trying to give it more of a tone of a request than a demand.
She reciprocated the gesture, and then she turned to her friend, leaning casually against the bar and expertly translating the conversation. He only nodded, smiling, and grabbed the nearest bottle of some booze to pour the contents into the glass along with some other ingredients.
"Here you go," the bartender, Jean, tried out his amateur English, but remnants of French accent could be heard. He laid two glasses of alcohol -- one fiercely brown; the other one, blue with a cocktail umbrella inside -- on the countertop and grinned. Before Draco could take out some cash to pay, Jean's voice echoed again, still with a little stammering accent. "Free!"
Y/N and Draco made their way to a nearby bench, both calmly sipping their drinks and looking at the horizon as the sun set down, disappearing out of your sight. It was strange for Draco how comfortable he felt in her presence; the comfort he hadn't experienced for years in anyone's company. Although he was aware you had met a few days ago, something in your relationship gave him enough space to be himself. And he liked it.
Draco chanced to glance at Y/N, and she was already looking.
"I like coming here," she started hastily, as to conceal she was staring. "It's calming."
As an excuse to tear their eye contact, Draco scanned the beach again, and he could definitely get her point. The place was nothing but charming. "Agree."
"You know... It was my inspirational area when I drew. I first found it when I got into a huge fight with my father. Since then, I have used it as an escape from the outer world. It was a mistake that I shared it with my ex, but... you seem to be a proper person."
Draco didn't miss the compliment, and a barely visible blush danced on his cheeks. He felt his pulse speeds up, heart pounding at the sudden realization of their proximity. "You drew? Is it past tense?"
"Yes." Y/N nodded swiftly, grunting. "I love to capture the moments I find beauty in: people, places, specific objects. I even aspired to go to art studies. But..." She exhaled deeply, preparing herself to continue. "...they are too costly. My father says so... I don't blame him; I know he tries. But I stopped myself from having hopes."
Draco listened, and the pity churned his stomach. Taking a nip of his drink, an idea popped up in his head. "Do you have those drafts?"
"Right now?" Y/N asked, shocked, to which Draco responded only with a short nod. "Yes, I usually carry them --er-- in my bag. I had to throw them away... but I just couldn't."
"Can I see?"
Surprisingly, for the first time, as Draco saw, reluctance appeared on her face. She deflated, apparently battling with doubts. "Ummm... Yes." And then she slipped her hand into her motley bag, rummaging intensely. After mere seconds, she finally found what she was looking for -- the set of papers bound neatly around by a fine twine and clip, to the additional perseverance.
Y/N passed him, what seemed to be many hours of her solid work, and he examined them closely. What Draco could say is that he wasn't an expert in the field, but he unconditionally believed that those sketches required a lot of talent to draw as precise as they were. He was in awe, really -- the accurate contours given the best preciseness; the attention paid even to the smallest details; gradings made with soft touches of a pencil. The drawings presented a lot: random people walking in a rush, natural landscapes, some sculptures lined up in front of a building, even the least relevant objects like shoes or an apple. That, of course, didn't discourage Draco from watching further -- he flipped the pages, soundlessly, and a little too fascinated to utter a thing.
"And what do you think?" asked Y/N, nervously tapping her fingers on her thigh and (unnecessarily) preparing herself for a flow of criticism. Her gaze darted between Draco's face and the sketches.
"I... think you have a gift," he complimented her, weighing the great truth in his words.
"Really?" Y/N asked him in disbelief, blushing profusely. "Thanks! But --er-- you can take them if you want. It'd be easier for me to know I give them in the good hands than throwing them away."
The 'good hands' comment flattered Draco, and he felt almost honored to accept the offer. "Yes. Thank you." He buried the works deeply in his pocket.
He would definitely make good use of those. He had a plan.
XOXOXO
A/N: Okay, hi everyone! It was supposed to be longer, but I decided to divide it into more chapters with less word count instead. Nothing is happening yet, but you can already feel some tension, right? :D The next chapter is going to be super, super short. So I might be posting it within two days or so??? Idk yet, and it’s not a promise because I have a nice surprise (spoiler! a new one-shot) coming and a few requests to answer, so it might also take a moment. But please, stick with me :D If anyone wants to appear on the tag list, write in comments, DM, or wheresoever!

Down to business (Part I?)
Getting to travel was one of the perks Ellie enjoyed the most about her job as the CEO’s personal assistant. She never really had any opportunity to get out of her small town before she moved to NYC, and had always been of a curious nature. This job was a dream come true on that matter. But some trips were better than others. The ones that revolved around business negotiations, although exciting in their own ways, were not her favourites. By far, the ones she preferred were the ones that were meant for networking, for Adrian to maintain his relationships with previous business partners. There had not been many of those since she had started working at Raines Corp. but she loved those very much. These business trips revolved mostly around socializing. And socializing was one of her strengths.
But the reason she liked these trips the most was not because of the fancy dinner parties, the pricey hotels, or the designer dresses she got to wear to play the part. No. What she liked the most were the times she could have to herself in between social events, to explore around and satiate her curiosity about ‘the rest of the world’, and the times when she could get Adrian all to herself. He was more relaxed during these trips. More light hearted. More playful. As well as more tuned to her cues than when they were travelling for more serious business. And that, she loved to play around with. A lot.
Adrian was always doing his best to keep up the façade of the boss-assistant interactions between them when they were in public. And she completely understood why. Truly. But that was also so tempting for her to do her best to weave her way through that invisible barrier he was tentatively setting between them.
She would brush his fingers when he would hand her a drink. Sneak a hand up his thigh under the table at dinner. Fiddle with her long strands of hair to attract his attention to her neckline. Oh, his poker face was good. Spot on. Decades of practice truly paying off. But whenever she played her cards well, she could see that façade slowly crumble down. His cheeks slightly changing colour as she would whisper sweet - well maybe not so sweet - nothings to his ear. His Adam’s apple moving slightly at the sight of her legs shifting as she would change position on her seat, her skin exposed through the slit of her dress. His speech suddenly stammering slightly as she would slowly caress the inside of his calf with her foot, whenever she had been sitting across from him at dinner and had felt bold enough to risk reaching blindly under the cover of the table cloth.
She always made sure to keep her face composed so that the other guests would not notice how Adrian’s reactions were directly connected to her. But she would also cast him a challenging look as soon as the moment had passed, to make it perfectly clear that the game was on. And never once had she received back any kind of response that would indicate that Adrian was not on board with this. He might play the game by pretending that this behaviour was totally unprofessional, but they both knew that Adrian had never been anyone who cared much about the rules.
This time, their ‘socialising trip’ had led them further from home than ever before. Ellie was finally given the chance to fly out of the country and get a glimpse at Europe, with their first stops leaving her in awe at the wonders of the Italian countryside where they had stayed for five days to catch up with a couple of Adrian’s old ‘friends’ who had chosen to retire there. She did enjoy the socializing parts way more than she had anticipated: who would have dared to complain about the exquisite cuisine, the tours of the vineyards, the breath-taking views over lakes and mountains, and the luxurious guestrooms they could discreetly retreat to when the schmoozing was getting boring and the yearning had become too much.
The last part of their ten-days trip had also reached beyond of her expectations: she had always dreamt of discovering France, and although their journey would not grant her her secret wish of seeing Paris, she found out that the luxurious hills and valleys of the South-West of France were as equally magnificent as what she had seen so far over the last few days. There was so much history around, old medieval castles and ancient caves that she wished she could explore, that her curiosity and excitement seemed to be only matched by Adrian’s nerdy enthusiasm. European history was not necessarily his strongest suit, but he did know quite a few things about it, and gladly shared with her his knowledge about the places they travelled through. His expertise on French wines was definitely spot on though. And kind of sexy too.
Their guest was – unsurprisingly – a wealthy investor who had inherited a prosperous estate from his great-grandfather who was, originally, the business partner Adrian had been trading with at the beginning of the twentieth-century. Pretending to be his own descendant was apparently something Adrian was quite used to. Even though their current host – Emile – was pretty obnoxious.
They dined, visited local investors, attended a couple of art exhibitions grand opening nights. And indulged on wine, local delicacies, and smouldering gazes in between polite handshakes and casual conversations. Ellie’s French was not really up to the challenge when other guests could not speak English, but luckily Adrian was doing quite well in that department – another sexy trait to add to that very long list that Ellie kept filling up in her head.
That night, their host had been planning a special treat for his guests – Adrian and Ellie among a larger group of about thirty: a tour of his private ‘art collection’, followed by a fancy garden-party on his estate. Ellie had been looking forward to it, until the tour had started and she had realised that most of these ‘pieces of art’ were actually ancient remains that Emile had bought from lucky ‘discoverers’ around the world and snatched from the hands of archaeologists and museums to fill up his own little private gallery. As the tour was going on, she kept grumbling by Adrian’s side, drawing the attention of a few other guests that were marvelling at these stolen relics and obviously did not care much about how these had been acquired. As the group proceeded to move on to the next room, Adrian discreetly motioned her to move aside and slow her pace, grinning at her once they had managed to place themselves at the tail of the touring group.
“I know this is grating you, but this is quite a common thing these days – there is no point sulking about it now while there is not much we can do about it”.
“You’re the one to talk, ‘Mr-I-glare-at-that-old-British-dude-for-buying-an-original-John Trumbull-canvas-to-decorate-his-guestroom’!”, she retorted challengingly. “These objects are as important to historians as those Revolutionary War paintings you keep talking about. They shouldn’t be kept in here only to be displayed once a year to a bunch of rich morons who care more about how much he paid for it than about what these objects were”.
“I know, I know…” Adrian admitted with a sight, raising his hands in surrender. “But as I said, there is not much we can do about it now. Let try to survive through this tour and enjoy the night.”
Rolling her eyes, Ellie let out an annoyed sight and finally nodded, her tensed shoulders still betraying her frustration.
The tour proceeded, Adrian and Ellie sharing eye rolls and annoyed looks every time Emile would brag about the price of a unique item. They always kept behind when they could, making a point of looking at some of the glass panels in detail to at least try to learn a little something out of this display of wealth. But that revealed to be a nearly impossible endeavour. There was barely any labels or information attached to these objects whatsoever. Nothing there to keep them distracted from that never ending tour. Well. Apart from each other.
It started with just the tingle of his breath in her neck as he was hovering above her to look at an old grease-lamp from some ancient cave. And then continued as she would casually hook her arm through his while staring at the antic statue of a Roman god. And a brush of his fingers down her spine as he stood behind her pretending to listen to Emile’s dull blabber. Her hand sneaking along the side of his thigh as they followed the group around. The light pressure of his hand on her lower back as he led her to move past him into yet another room.
Pretending to pay attention to their host was increasingly difficult. Preventing their faces from betraying their very unprofessional thoughts even more so.
“I know I have said this before but…”, Adrian whispered in her ear, a playful smile forming on his lips, “I love that little tempter of yours… it makes me feel… a lot of things”.
He could hear Ellie’s heartbeat race in her chest at his words, even though she was keeping her eyes trained on the display panel before them, doing her best to keep her composure while the predatory tone in his voice was making her knees tremble slightly. The other guests were buzzing around them, pointing at glass display cases here and architectural features there, oblivious to the heat surrounding the two secret lovers as if the bubble Adrian and Ellie had formed around them had turned them into two of those trinkets exposed around the room that nobody was truly paying attention to.
Trying to break through the thick air that had been lingering between them, Ellie shifted on her heels to follow the flock of people that were regrouping to move along, casting a knowing smile at Adrian, and holding his gaze for a few seconds before walking away.
But before she could turn left into the next corridor, she felt his arm wrap around her middle, only to swiftly whoosh her aside to a secluded corner of the room, out of sight from the rest of the group thanks to one of the strong pillars that supported the roof of the exhibition room. A gasp escaped her lips as he sprung her around, pressing her back against the cold marble as he eagerly captured her lips in a searing kiss, his hands pressed against her neck, and his torso edging closer to her chest as she was gradually yielding to his powerful embrace.
Trailing her fingers up his neck until they reached his hair, she eventually gave a gentle tug so that she could make a break for air, their lips just a few inches apart as she teased, breathless: “I thought we had to keep our public appearances strictly professional, Mr Raines?”
She felt his grin against her mouth more than she could see it. “Well, what we are doing now is purely professional, Miss Reed. If there was anyone left around to see us, I’d just explain how I was telling all about...” he paused to nibble at her lower lip for a few seconds, “... about the sturdiness of these eighteenth-century pillars...”.
“Eighteenth century, han?” she giggled against his lips, her voice catching in her throat to form a silent moan as Adrian’s mouth began to trail down her chin to follow her jawline.
Her mind struggling between the will to keep her eyes open to check that no one was in sight, and the tantalizing swirls of his tongue against the skin beneath her ear, the shivers that were running down her spine quickly sorted that battle for her. She let her eyelids drop and her head fall back to rest against the stone behind her, focusing only on Adrian’s touch and on the way his hands had now started to drift from her neck to her shoulders, inching lower and lower as his mouth tasted the salt of the skin down her neck and along her collarbone.
Her hands unconsciously travelling from his hair to his back, they suddenly grabbed his shoulders a little tighter to press him closer as she felt him reach for the fabric of her dress to bunch the black silk over her hips. It took all of her will to remain silent when Adrian wedged his knee between her legs, her lips tightening in a thin line to repress a whimper as his fingers trailed down one of her thigh to her knee so he could lift her leg up against his hip, pressing himself forward to conquer the empty space between them.
She could feel his grin against her windpipes when her hips started to grind against his of their own accord, the tight grip of his fingers against her rear sending waves of heat down to where their bodies met.
“I think one of us should keep an eye on that corridor, in case anyone is sent out to look for us” he whispered against her skin, before lifting his gaze back to her, his golden eyes glimmering with mischief. “Would that be a mission you’d be happy to take on, Miss Reed?”
“Of course” she manages to answer, her voice croaking from anticipation.
“Good.” he grins. “Then, you’ll have to face the other way…”
She barely had time to register what he meant before she felt the heat of his body replace the cold marble that had been pressing against her back. She instinctively reached forward to place her palms on the pillar as Adrian resumed his pressing touches eagerly, one arm wrapped around her chest to keep her close, and the other finding its way between her thighs.
She could peek at the corridor ahead of them from where they stood, most of their bodies hidden by the imposing column that seemed to edge closer and closer to her as Adrian’s touch became more insistent. But being able to see ahead did not mean that she was actually looking. Even if she had wanted to fulfil her ‘mission’, the pressure of his left palm against her thigh and the hand that slipped under the fabric of her cleavage made it near impossible to focus on the task. The soft bites and kisses her neck were subjected to were not helping either.
Not being able to see or touch him was like torture, his quiet groans vibrating from his chest to her ribs, and his arousal pressing firmly against her back like a wicked promise that was for now beyond reach. Her back arched involuntarily when a firm hand grabbed her breast, his warm breath beneath her ear betraying his grin as the fingers on her thigh started to wander towards the edge of her underwear, playing with the seam of the lace before sneaking underneath with a deliberate slowness that had her whimper behind her tightened lips.
The light graze of his fingertips against her swollen nerves was all that was needed to weaken all muscles in her body, making both of them dangerously tumble forward as her arms gave in, removing the only leverage she had against Adrian’s pressure in her back, which had been keeping her so far from being flushed against the cold marble with no room to escape the sweet torment of his heated caresses.
Even though her eyes were now shut, she knew that Adrian was watching closely her features when she let her head fall back to rest in his shoulder, her brain going into overdrive when his touch became more pressing, kneading her breast and drawing lazy circles against her centre relentlessly. It was not long before she lost the last bit of control she had left over her own body, her lips parting slightly to let a moan escape, quickly muffled by Adrian’s mouth covering hers in an attempt to preserve the silence around them.
That might have worked perfectly, if only he had been able to kiss her with more restraint. Instead, his tongue had quickly found its way through her parted lips, brushing hers in patterns mirroring the movement of his fingertips between her legs, swallowing her whines as if he could taste her own pleasure through the ragged sounds that he was drawing out of her.
She was itching to touch him. One of her hands had left the cold surface of the pillar to find its way to his head and tangle in his hair, her entire body squirming against his to seek the friction that she was craving for. She knew he was trying to make her lose her mind. And it was working. She could feel his fingers slide gradually further down against her core, dipping into the wetness of her folds before retreating back, drawing growl after growl each time.
She could tell Adrian was relishing this by the way the corners of his mouth curled against hers. It was only when he suddenly pulled away from her swollen lips that she finally opened her eyes again, the lust and wickedness of his gaze sending a shiver all the way down to her toes. He had stopped moving, simply holding her petite form against his chest as tight as deemed possible, his golden eyes anchored to hers with an unmistakable gleam of challenge and promise.
“Adrian…” she mumbled feebly, desperately trying to grind against him but unable to resist his hold on her.
He smiled, remaining silent for a few seconds, before finally breaking the stillness with a low, husky voice, in a tone that was somehow both inviting and commanding: “Say please”.
There was no hesitation in her response, no control, her rasped voice echoing around the room as she begged, breathless: “Adrian, pleeeaaase…”
Thankfully, he did not make her say it again, barely waiting a few seconds before plugging a finger into her dampened slit, followed nearly immediately by a second, resuming his circular patterns over her swollen clit with the pad of his thumb. Withdrawing and dipping back into her with maddening slowness, she could feel her muscles clench around his fingers and her knees start to quiver as the pleasure was slowly building in.
Her dilated pupils could not tear away from his golden eyes, silently begging for more as he increased his pace, his hips grinding voraciously against her back, his mouth inches from hers as if resisting the urge to kiss her so that he could revel in the sweet music of her feverish whines echoing around them.
“Adrian… this is… so…” she tried to mutter between her gasps.
Adrian’s eyes flashed with a voracious gleam as he purred against her lips with a proud smirk, “so… good?”.
Her lips pursed weakly to form a teasing grin. “So… unprofessional”.
His smirk only widened further at her words, his hands suddenly moving away from her burning skin to grip her hips, making her head jerk up from his shoulder in surprise. She was about to complain when he swiftly swirled her body around and crashed his lips onto hers, pushing her back against the pillar, the contrast between the cold marble and the heat of her skin making her jump a little in his grasp.
It was not long before Adrian’s hands had found their way back beneath her dress, his fingers reaching hurriedly for the hem of her thong as his mouth started to descend from her mouth to her chin, roaming over her neck and her collarbone, until he sunk to his knees before her, skipping the parts of her that were covered by fabric to head straight for the space right below her navel. Dragging her underwear down her legs, he only broke the contact between his warm lips and her skin so that he could guide the lace over her heels, quickly shoving the fabric in his pocket before capturing her pulsing nub between his lips, not wasting any minute before expertly starting to explore her aching core, nibbling and suckling with an unmatched dedication.
Her hands were roaming all over his head, tangling her fingers in his hair and pushing her hips forward to demand more, her lower lip caught between her teeth to repress the urge to cry out with every stroke of his tongue, or every time the deft fingers that were slithering up and down her inner thigh came close enough to tease her entrance before retreating back wickedly. As much as part of her wanted to pull him back up to his feet and beg him to take her now, the other part could not even fathom the idea of making him stop his godly work between her legs.
There was no more coherent thought going through her fogged brain. Fragmentary visions of heated memories and unspoken fantasies were flashing before her eyes, mingling with the rousing sight of Adrian down on his knees before her, tasting her fervently in every way that she had ever dreamt of being tasted.
When she felt the intoxicating warmth of his mouth suddenly leave her centre, her mind unconsciously thanked him for ending this sweet torture, expecting the yearning in her core to be satiated soon enough when she would finally get to feel him inside her.
But that sweet release never came.
It took her a few seconds to realise that Adrian had jerked back up to his feet and hurriedly pulled down the fabric of her dress, unceremoniously grabbing Ellie’s waist to move her away from their hiding spot, releasing his grip once she was standing beside him in front of one of the display cases, their back turned away from the corridor.
She had to grip the edge of the display case to keep herself steady, her knees still trembling from Adrian’s handywork just a few seconds before, her eyes opening and closing at a maddening pace to try to clear her clouded brain and regain her senses. It was only when she heard the distinct sound of a pair of heels echoing towards them that she finally understood.
“Monsieur Raines?”, they heard a woman’s voice call out at a distance.
Adrian’s cheeks were flushed, and his hair completely tousled, but he made a quick work of fixing it as well as fixing his shirt with a smirk, mastering the art of regaining his composure in a flick of an eye, like the annoyingly perfect businessman that he was. Ellie fumbled around in an attempt to do the same, fully aware that she would never be able to be as efficient as Adrian, especially in the state of desperate yearning that he had just put her through. She was still panting, her heart thumping in her chest, pupils dilated and cheeks hot from so much blood rushing to her face, both from arousal and from the embarrassment that she knew was about to come.
Ellie jumped a little when the woman’s voice finally reached the room they were in: “Ah, Monsieur Raines! Je vous ai trouvé! Le buffet va commencer, si vous voulez bien rejoindre les autres invités dans le jardin?”.
Ellie had no clue what the woman had just said, and was in no shape to turn around and let the woman see the state of her. She was so grateful that Adrian knew exactly what to say and how to behave casually to buy her a few more minutes to sort out the mess he had made of her… although hearing him speak French was not helping much getting her arousal under control, as he politely answered the woman: “Merci, nous vous rejoignons dans quelques instants.”.
Ellie sighted with relief when she heard the woman’s footsteps retreat, turning around to face him, glaring at him with her best attempt at a reproachful scowl.
“That was….” she started, before being interrupted by Adrian’s mouth on hers, as he pressed a soft kiss on her swollen lips, before pulling away slowly with a grin.
“… unprofessional?” he teased, earning a falsely unamused eye-roll in return.
“We better get going, the party is starting, and all of the other guests are gathered in the gardens now” he announced, translating what the woman had said, but not releasing Ellie from his embrace just yet.
“I am in no state for socialising now” she admitted with a grimace, although she could not fight the teasing grin that was starting to form on her face. “I will never be able to focus properly after this… all I will be thinking about is sorting out this… hum, unfinished business…”
Adrian’s hold tightened a little more around her waist at her words, his eyes still gleaming with mischief and never leaving hers when he stepped slowly away, grabbing her hand to start dragging them both away from the room.
His voice was husky and full of promise when he casually answered with a teasing smile: “Well… unfortunately, we’ll have to play along a little bit longer I’m afraid… but I will certainly be looking forward all evening to the second part of this… unfinished business…”.

N/A: If anyone else is as eager as Adrian to see how ‘Part II’ of their little ‘public indiscretions’ is going to play out, let me know, and I’d be happy to oblige 😉 This prompt has inspired me way too much, thank you so much for the ask @mssukeyna 😉

Illicit affairs -Chapter 3
summary: who doesn’t love to sneak out to a club full of criminals? ok, that was not fair for peter, but at least he can still kick ass. Plus, someone’s not happy to see that y/n is back.
Listen to: Kiwi- Harry Styles & Dakiti- Bad Bunny
word count: 8.8k
(author’s note at the end now)
series masterlist
You looked at yourself in the mirror, checking if you felt like you looked good enough for going to a club full of criminals. The night after your “meeting” with Felicia, you had gotten a voicemail from a private number, giving you the address and some further indications that you had to follow because you were…you.
You can’t go looking like you buy things from Brandy Melville (which you took a great offense)
Full-on glam look, we can’t have people recognizing who you are.
Ask for Felicia, only and only to the bartender. And only if I haven’t found you first.
Go alone.
So, there you were. You had used so much eyeliner as you tried to recall how to actually do a smoky eye correctly while also trying different dresses for this new persona. Honestly, you hadn’t done a lot of undercover in your time as an Avenger but now it seemed either way as a good way to start.
You had ended up with a cheetah printed light pink mini dress from Versace that Thor had bought a few years ago, it didn’t seem like a right choice per se but paired with some good Dr. Martens, an oversize leather jacket, and some necklaces and chokers that you hadn’t worn in years along with the necklace with the arc reactor in the charm, way closer to your skin; it seemed like the perfect fit.
You didn’t know if this could trick anyone but it was worth the try as you took out your subway card, since you couldn’t arrive even close to the location with your suit.
You were ready to go.
“HAPPY, Dad and Pepper are out, right?”, you asked your AI as you walked towards your door with a smirk on your face as you watched yourself in a mirror for the last time and took the handle of the door.
It hadn’t required a lot of planning leaving without anyone noticing that you were gone. Pepper and Tony had a date night, which usually consisted of an overnight flight somewhere so they could have time alone. Morgan would be staying with a babysitter while Harley was out in Boston for the weekend, visiting some friends from MIT. Therefore, there was no one at Stark Tower that you needed to worry about.
But then came Peter and you hadn’t been answering Peter’s calls or texts since you had met with Felicia. Deep down you knew that Peter was concerned about you and usually if this was years ago, you would’ve maybe worried that Peter would appear out of nowhere on you. But that was then and this was now after Peter had let you go, you weren’t sure if he would even try anything more than a couple of calls.
Therefore, it seemed like a done deal.
“Yes, Miss Stark but-”, the AI protested as you opened the door.
Nonetheless, it didn’t matter now, the door was wide opened and Peter Parker was staring as surprised as you were, with his hand on the air ready to knock.
Peter shifted awkwardly as you stayed stunned in front of him. Part of you thought that Peter would simply let it go like he had let go of you when you ran away to Europe or how he had let go of the last conversation you had regarding why you had left, yet there he was.
Peter had been worried, to say the least. He had struggled to sleep the last few days, mostly because you were ignoring his calls and texts that talked about the mission but after the whole Gwen debacle, that had ended up with Gwen threatening to end the relationship if he didn’t tell her that he was with you on a mission, he was worried that Gwen’s comment might have ruined what was growing that day.
Peter was aware that he had hurt you and he believed that you would never forgive him completely, most importantly he somehow respected that decision now that you had talked. He could see the hurt in your eyes the last conversation you had and he felt his heart-crushing when you told him that you loved him.
He didn’t try to think that anything would go back as the way it was, but the way that even after you had to tell him the truth, you were spending time together and it felt like before; it gave him something extremely dangerous: hope. Hope that even after everything, you were showing him those tiny acts of caring for him and were somehow talking like before.
He hadn’t been aware until that point how much he really craved your presence again in your life as he could only breathe once more with you around.
Therefore, Peter knew he couldn’t simply wait like last time, he knew he had to act and that’s how he had ended up at your door that night.
“What happened?” Peter asked as soon as the sudden shock wear off him, “You haven’t been returning my calls”
You cursed mentally as Peter entered the room, you were already on a limited frame of time to get to the club and meet Felicia, and now you had to deal with Peter and getting rid of him.
Fast.
“Jeez, it’s Thursday Parker, almost the end of the week. Let it be, go and hang out with your girlfriend” you answered sarcastically as you rolled your eyes, still near the door.
Peter gazed back at you confused, you were so relaxed compared to how intense you had been days prior about getting together a plan. Peter tried not to think about it as he stared at you, but he couldn’t avoid that his worst fear about Gwen’s comment felt more real than before.
“Y/N,” he started as he stepped closer to you, his voice was so small that it made your heart clenched a bit. “I thought that we were fine, we were working together and talking…”, he whispered.
Sometimes, you even got concerned for how much Peter worried about you, you didn’t know if it involved his overhyped senses but since you became partners, he was extremely in tune with you and your feelings. It happened so often that you had come to know by heart, the characteristic look on his face when he felt that anxiety creeping in with something related to you. The haunting gaze on his eyes, the sallow features drawn, and the smallest voice when he asked you how you were. He usually would look down when he got to close, his hand would slither behind your back or on your thigh, holding it tightly as you smiled and told him everything was fine or maybe as you cried and told him that everything was not fine.
You could feel the lump on your neck as tears began to creep into your eyes, he still cared. If this had happened any other moment, you figured you would have a conversation with him, a more honest one, as you tried to swallow your anger and resentment because you knew it wasn’t fair with Peter.
But Peter was making you waste time and you felt the pressure of the seconds pass as you took a look at the time on your phone, knowing that Peter had to leave, soon.
“Yes, I know,” you started as you walked back to the hallway. “But then I remember our little talk last week and how it ended”
In all honesty, Peter thought it would’ve taken longer for you to budge and talk about your feelings but he felt somehow glad that you decided to bring it up. Peter sucked in a breath, fully ready to tell you everything, have an honest conversation, as he tried to swallow his anger and resentment for losing so many years because he knew it wasn’t fair with you.
“I told you that I loved you and you told me that it was my fault that I didn’t say it earlier?”, you asked with a little more anger in your voice, crossing your arms over your chest to make you look tougher. “What about you Peter? Why didn’t you tell me earlier that you loved me?”
The questions were sincere but the why you were asking them was a different story as Peter chased you through the apartment while you walked towards the elevator as quickly as you could.
“Because, I never thought that you would fall for someone like me…”, he answered as he caught your hand with his web and pulled you close to him.
The smell of cinnamon and honey invaded you, your hand landed in Peter’s chest, your gazes linked and your eyes fluttered down to his lips for just one second. If this would’ve been any other moment, years ago, you could’ve stayed there being held by Peter forever but this wasn’t the moment and Peter wasn’t yours to do that.
You backed.
“Don’t bullshit me, Peter, I don’t know why you want to forget about that night-” you growled, giving him a stern look before he interrupted you.
“I’m not trying to forget it”
You wanted to explode right there and there as Peter Parker stated that he wasn’t trying to forget what had happened between you two, with his chocolate eyes with golden specks and his constellation of freckles drawn on his face. The gravity of his answer shocked you, it seemed so straightforward and determined that you felt tingles running through your body, but…
You knew you couldn’t be doing this right now.
“So, why don’t you just admit that you knew I had feelings for you and you didn’t care and got with Gwen!”, you snapped as you called the elevator.
Peter could still hear the hurt in your voice and it dawned on him, how much he hadn’t thought about how it looked to you. You had been acting weird at the party and then you had to go looking for him, for what Peter assumed now was to confess your feelings; but he had been making out with Gwen.
Part of him wanted to punch himself in the face for being so tone-deaf regarding your thoughts, for only drowning himself in the feeling that you had left him and that excusing himself wouldn’t fix anything because you both had been clueless about your feelings for the other and only fighting what you felt would make it worse.
“I wanted you, y/n”, he whispered.
Peter knew that maybe was a little too forward, he tried to dismiss the pang of guilt that he felt as he remembered Gwen but you deserved the truth and he decided that he needed to give it to you.
You felt like your heart was sinking as you heard his words, you couldn’t believe he was speaking so truthfully and without consequences. He was giving you what you had wanted to hear for so long and this felt like torture to you as the doors of the elevator opened and although every bone on your body was screaming for you to stay with Peter, you knew you simply couldn’t.
“You still went back to her when I left Peter, I think it’s pretty self-explanatory”, you answered softly as you turned around and entered the elevator.
Peter fought the urge to groaned as he followed you into the elevator.
“You want things to be so simple and they aren’t y/n”, Peter answered, the doors close behind him.
“Peter it’s simple, I was there and you didn’t choose me”, you said slowly as you prayed mentally for the elevator to go down faster so you could escape.
“It’s not what I want-”
“You know what, Peter?”, you said as the door opened into the lobby of Stark Industries. “Let’s leave it like that and go spend time with your girlfriend”, you stated while turning around and walking as fast as you could.
Peter stayed in the elevator, cursing under his breath as he saw you running away, again.
Why does she always run away?
“But we have work to do!”, was the only thing that Peter felt could make you stop.
He knew how dedicated you were to the mission, he knew that you were invested and honestly, if it was the only way that he could make you stay with him, he would try it.
You stopped in your tracks, biting your lip and closing your eyes for a second, annoyed that Peter had finally found every right thing to say after so much time. You stayed silent for more than one second and suddenly, something didn’t sit right with Peter as he walked towards you.
He had been so into the conversation, on telling you the truth on acknowledging your feelings that he hadn’t really noticed how you were looking or the outfit that you were wearing, he knew it wasn’t your usual clothes and it seemed like the puzzle pieces were falling into place as Peter looked at you completely stunned.
“Peter, can you just respect my limit? And leave? Just for today”, you answered exhausted and your gazes linked.
Peter didn’t answer, he simply gave a step back and motion for you to go on your way, it hurt to leave him like that but you knew that you had to go now if you wanted any information regarding Kingpin.
The metro ride wasn’t bad, except for a couple of creeps that cat called you but you managed to threaten to bodily harm some of them and you decided to bark at one. Either way, no one had recognized you and you kept your head down as you exited the subway station and walked through the streets of The Bronx.
You managed to slip into the club after doing a short line to enter, without much trouble. The bodyguards didn’t ask for an I.D. (thankfully) and you were glad that they only allowed people to get in based on their outfits, honestly only the ones that didn’t look “vanilla” were the ones allowed to enter.
It was hot, sticky, and loud as you walked through the crowd to arrive at the main area of the club, especially the VIP one that was very close to the bar. The people were grinding against each other, others nearly having sex against the wall, many taking a bit more pills than what you thought was okay, while others simply danced. And as in any other club, you had to muscle your way through it to arrive at the bar, where the blue strobe lights didn’t bother you as much.
Your eyes were scanning the place, as you asked HAPPY quietly through your earbud to look for someone that looked familiar, checking if there were any criminals at the moment and most importantly, for someone that looked like Felicia.
“Shots?”, the bartender asked as he placed three small glasses in front of you.
You felt confused for a moment, snapping out of your thoughts as you watched the older guy with a bottle of vodka in his hand, he raised his eyebrows as he shook the bottle a bit. “Yes, keep the tab open”
“There you go”, he said as he served them to the top.
You took them fairly quickly; it didn’t matter that they burned your throat as you quickly turned your sight towards the dancefloor and the tables near the VIP area. Although it felt like it was bigger, it was rather a smaller club, more familiar and more private, it was perfect for the shady businesses that the Maggia family often had, especially Kingpin.
“I can only identify one member of Frisk’s inner circle”, HAPPY finally said after a few seconds. “In one of the VIP tables, is the Architect, Orville Nugent. There are more people with minor offenses or in parole”
You knew of Orville Nugent thanks to your research and you had come to find that he was off the grid because of the kind of work he was rumored to perform. Extortionist for once was a title that you didn’t like much as you saw how he drank quietly as other men talked to him while some exotic dancers were performing in front of them. But as you watched Nugent, you noticed the girl that was serving him his drink and then walking directly to the bar.
Her long silver hair was nowhere to be seen, instead, it was a long blonde wig that was framing her face beautifully, she was passing by through the crowd, in a black tight dress, as she carried the bottles of liquor in her hand without having to muscle her way through, but delicately; as if she knew where she had to move next to never bump into anyone. However, what made you lose your breath was how she had her undivided attention on you, her eyes watching you intently.
You suddenly felt pinpricks on the back of your neck as the girl watched you rather keenly, and you just knew who she was. Running your hand slowly through your hair, you tried to brace yourself for what would Felicia said, you fixed your dress and cleared your throat as she came closer.
But she didn’t say anything.
She walked up to you, closer than she had ever been. Eyes still linked as she trapped you on your seat as she very softly left the bottle that she was carrying on the bar, you gulped as you tried to be as calm as you possibly could. She smelled like jasmine, you felt intoxicated.
She smirked.
Before you knew it, she was dragging you to the dancefloor and you were doing little to prevent it. You couldn’t avoid thinking if you were walking with her, hand in hand, because of your own volition or because of her heated gaze but before you knew it, you were feeling the bass of the music tearing through your body as Felicia began to dance with you.
Her skin was smooth as she pulled you closer, so you were now flush up against her, you felt your cheeks getting warmer and warmer as the second’s pass. She quickly moved her hands to your hips and forced you to move with her. You swallowed hard, as she placed her forehead against yours with a small smirk. You weren’t sure what song was playing as you simply tried to memorize every detail of her face; she was more beautiful than what you had anticipated without the mask on, her lips were as full as ever as she wore bright red lipstick and her eyes were accompanied by a sharp wing that combined perfectly with her purple make-up look. But the thing you noticed the most, as you placed your hands over her shoulders softly, was that her greyish-eyes did have specks of purple on them.
You had never seen anything like that before.
Before you could say anything, she spun you around, your bum now flushed against her. You stayed stunned for a second, as you analyzed the skill, she had to manipulate your body as she wished, she placed her jaw on your shoulder and you felt a shiver as she breathed against your neck. You weren’t sure if it was the music or the couple of shots you had taken, or simply the fact that you were on an undercover mission and no one was watching you, so you leaned back against her as you danced to the beat of the music.
The two of you swayed to the beat together, moving at the same time as you tilted your head to rest on her shoulder. You felt goosebumps appearing on your skin as you felt her fingertips trail along your body and you simply closed your eyes, trying to enjoy the sensation of her body against yours and the music, a remix of Bad Bunny playing in the back.
But you suddenly felt the hairs of the nape of your neck standing up, you quickly opened your eyes as you stopped dancing and began to scan the room, you didn’t manage to see anyone you knew but you felt that someone was watching you. Were you being paranoid? Or had someone recognized you?
You didn’t know but it made you snap.
“Let’s talk”, you stated seriously, as you looked at your surroundings, while still trying to pass unnoticed, wondering if you were just imagining something that really wasn’t there.
“You were doing so good”, she whined on the shell of your ear but then she stepped back.
Felicia huffed as she took your hand and began to muscle your way through the crowd. The music seemed louder than before and it seemed as if space was closing in on you, the blue strobe lights blinded you for a second as you tried to follow her.
Soon, you reached a door, close enough to the bar as Felicia simply gave the bartender a knowing look and the guy nodded, somehow allowing her to enter. It was a small room; cleaning supplies were surrounding you as well as a rag of clothes that seemed like costumes or uniforms for the employees. Felicia quickly shoved you into the room before she turned around, closed the door, and locked it. She removed the blonde wig and then placed it on a chair close-by.
“I was starting to think that you weren’t coming”, she said with the silvery voice she always had.
She turned around to look at you with a small smirk as she walked towards you and let her long silver hair-free, but before she could get too close to you and before you said a word; you felt a slight movement on the door handle. Both of you froze as you turned towards the door.
It was moving frantically and Felicia quickly moved to the door, she positioned herself in front of it, ready to attack if anything happened. While you tapped your charm slightly and the nanobots quickly covered your arm, you had your repulsors ready for the attack but then the handle seemed to be broken.
A second after, Peter was standing in front of you as he quickly closed the door behind him. Felicia rapidly placed her hand on his neck and pushed him hard against the wall, Peter winced as he felt the pressure of Felicia’s hold on his neck before he could say anything. Felicia showed her nails, which weren’t her usual claws but were still very sharp, and with one swift movement of her hand she tried to attack Peter but you caught her hand in the air.
“What are you doing here?”, you hissed at Peter as Felicia glared at you for stopping her. “Let him go, he’s with me”, you said to her while your eyes were still fixed on Peter.
Felicia doubted you for a second but as soon as you shot her an annoyed look, she let go of Peter who was finally able to breathe a little better, he coughed a couple of times.
“I told you not to bring anyone!”, she growled at you while you crossed your arms over your chest and glared at Peter.
“I didn’t tell him to come!”, you answered back. “Did you follow me here?”, you asked at him with a scowl drawn on your face.
Honestly, it hadn’t been on Peter’s plans either.
As soon as it clicked to Peter that you were doing something that you clearly weren’t supposed to be doing, he had to follow you. He knew that you would do anything to succeed on a mission, even put yourself at risk in the most stupid ways and Peter wasn’t prepared to lose you over getting information, he had just got you back. He was your partner, even if you didn’t want him to be and he needed to be there.
Although, it had been one hell of a journey. He had decided to let you walk a few minutes before he began to chase you quietly through the streets. He had been wearing a hoodie under his jean jacket and had managed to hide his face well enough, avoiding your gaze when you turned around and checked your surroundings every while. He had heard a couple of guys catcalling you, and after you had walked farther away, he had managed to ‘accidentally’ punched each one of them in their groin as he still followed you. He almost missed the train and he had to hang himself to the back of it since he had been way too distracted by the way you had barked at the last one.
The most challenging part, nonetheless, had been getting into the club. You had managed to enter quite easy and Peter hoped that he could do the same, but as soon as the bodyguard gave him one look, he had ordered him to ‘fuck off’ literally. Peter had protested, which had ended up with the guard pushing him into the street and kicking him in his ribs, threatening him.
So, he had to go through an alley close-by, then climbed through a couple of buildings to finally reach the side of the club. Peter quickly placed his mask on to scan the place and asked Karen to check if there was any other way he could get inside, and quickly. Thankfully, Karen had managed to find an air duct that could lead him to the women’s restroom and therefore, into the club.
It hadn’t been pretty; Peter was sure he had found more than two bodies of dead rats and he had been chased out of the restroom but a couple of girls when he managed to get out of the stall, literally scratch him and punch him with their handbags.
But the thing that had bothered Peter the most was how the girl, who he had now guessed was Felicia, was touching you. Peter was livid as he stared at both of you in shock, jaw slightly unhinged and a sharp glint in his eyes that were clearly a symptom of something Peter maybe wasn’t ready to admit, given that he was still with Gwen and he shouldn’t be having those feelings for his partner.
He had managed to chase both of you into the quiet room, thankfully avoiding the bartender who had seemed to be keeping an eye for both of you when you had entered the small room.
“I knew you were onto something!”, Peter whispered back at you, giving Felicia a sheepish grin before turning back to you. “We are partners, you are supposed to let me know this kind of information!”
“Oh my god”, Felicia’s voice interrupted both of you. When you turned to see her, you could’ve sworn that her grin would’ve been perfectly accompanied by a long tail that would seductively twirl around her face. She was not stupid. It didn’t take her long to figure out who Peter was. “Spidey”, she cooed.
Peter rolled her eyes at Felicia as he glared back at you and you shrugged. “You were the one who decided to come here, it’s your fault she knows who you are”
“Felicia Hardy”, she simply said as she offered Peter her hand.
You had to fight the urge to roll your eyes at the way that Felicia had introduced herself to Peter.
Peter doubted it for a second but he ended up shaking hands with her, thankfully. “Peter Parker”, he muttered as he quickly let go of her hand. “What are we doing here?”
“I told Stark that I can help you, and I will” Felicia offered as she leaned against the chair with a smirk drawn on her face, while Peter looked at her suspiciously.
“We were about to start talking until you arrived” you continued as you walked back towards Felicia who seemed to have a permanent grin on her face when she looked at you. “Anyway, what information do you have?”
But before Felicia could even speak, Peter interrupted your conversation.
“Wait, how do we know she’s not setting a trap?” Peter asked as he gave Felicia an icy stared. “She brought us to one of the places own by the Maggia”
Felicia grumbled and you saw how she clenched her jaw, just as annoyed with Peter as he was with her. “Why would I tell you my real name if I was setting a trap?”
Peter remained silent and so did you, as you had noticed the last time you saw her; she felt transparent but neither you nor Peter spoke as you still watching her somehow apprehensively.
“Look, I swear, things have changed and I can help you” she repeated once more as her gaze linked exclusively with yours, she was ignoring Peter and trusting you.
“Why though?”, Peter inquired once more while you shot him an annoyed look. He looked back at you and shrugged, he clearly didn’t like Felicia per se but you didn’t know if it was because she was Black Cat or just because she had brought you here.
“I’m smart enough to know I’m not going to go against all the Avengers”, Felicia answered right away and you felt your breath stop for a second, Peter’s eyes widened as both of your gazes linked.
All the Avengers?
“What do you mean?”, you asked her, face turning pale at the information while Felicia shrugged nonchalantly while she watched your blinking expressions.
Felicia pressed her lips together; the air became heavier as you felt your muscles growing tense while you waited for Felicia’s answer. Just by the way she was gazing at you, her eyes burning holes into your face as you attempted to read her, she seemed somehow solemn, you knew it wasn’t good.
“Kingpin is going after all of you” Felicia declared uninterested, but her eyes betrayed her as you saw a flash of concern on her face.
“What!?” you yelled, louder than what you would’ve expected to but the second she heard your voice, Felicia walked towards you and placed her hand quickly over your lips.
“You don’t want them to catch us!”, Felicia pointed out while Peter seemed to be still in shock as he heard Felicia’s words, you pushed her hand away from your mouth quickly, still staring at her wide-eyed.
“After my many failed attempts of collecting those freaking neutralizers, Kingpin decided to go straight to the source. He has made a deal with Hammer and it’s getting those babies for a large amount of money but without all the trouble”
You felt dizzy as you remembered Hammer’s words on being a good person and how upset you had been regarding being place on this mission with Peter. But with this information, that seemed like a brick dropped on your lap, you knew that you needed to stay somehow calm if you wanted to succeed in this, nonetheless, it was a hard pill to swallow; the people who you were protecting were the ones betraying you.
Felicia looked at both of you point-blank as Peter’s panicky eyes began to look for your reaction but you exploded right away.
“That piece of shit!”
But Peter quickly placed his hand on your shoulder and slightly squeezed it as you cursed Hammer under your breath, you couldn’t believe it. “Hammer already has a history we can catch him easily” Peter tried to convince you.
“I don’t think it’s that easy,” Felicia stated flatly as if it was obvious. “If Frisk has been doing all the transactions through legitimate businesses. He also has been trying to contact Oscorp but they haven’t reach Norman yet. But with the bad blood between your dad and Norman Osborn, then it wouldn’t be a surprise if he said yes”
You felt like throwing up as Peter and Felicia continued. Whatever you had gotten yourself into, there was still quite a bit more that you needed to fix everything and you needed to know everything.
“Why is he doing this?”, Peter asked before you even retaliated as you clutch onto Peter’s arm while hearing Felicia.
“Kingpin was at first just dealing with the police and he was doing his business as usual; then Spiderman came into the picture with this alien bullshit”, she said as she pointed at Peter. “He tried to lay low since he had managed to trade drugs and guns perfectly fine, but soon the weapons made by Vulture reached him and he was more than happy to add them to his portfolio. Then, the friendly-neighborhood Spidey here managed to bust all of his suppliers for the new weapons and he has now become paranoic seeing how close he is to the Avengers”
You quickly turned to Peter with a glare. “What did you do to Kingpin while I was gone?”, you hissed as you placed the pads of your fingers on your temples, trying to calm yourself.
Peter rolled his eyes, “I just managed to bust some of his operations”, he shrugged.
“A lot of his operations,” Felicia intervened with a stern look at Peter as she crossed her arms over her chest. “Since you capture Vulture, Tinkerer, and Scorpion, half of his providers are gone”, Felicia replied.
“So, now he thinks that-”
“-that the Avengers are after him”, Felicia completed the sentence. “He had even been calmer the last few months until he learned that you returned and now, he’s all over the place. He wants to end you, all of you”
You remained silent for a moment as you figured the repercussions of everything that this meant. This wasn’t for a second-generation Avengers; Kingpin was going after all of you and it seemed more frightening that he wasn’t even afraid to face all of you.
“And how did you fit in all of this?”, Peter asked now. You could almost feel how he was tensing up behind you.
“Oh, I’ve been working for a long-time, baby” Felicia replied as she batted her eyes playfully. “But no one ever knew about me. Someone simply gave my details to Kingpin and I had worked little jobs for him, the only big one was the Hammer and Oscorp one. I had managed to do most of my job until you arrived”, she finished with a glare.
“And now?”
You gazed at Felicia after you finished rubbing your hands down your face, trying to read her.
“I want to work for the right team, the team that’s going to help me survive”, Felicia said with a shrug as she placed her hands on her back.
“Then we can work together and stop him”, you stated steady and Felicia nodded with a gleam on her eyes.
Suddenly, you heard a special sequence of knocks on the door. All of you turned into the door and it was quickly opened by the bartender, as soon as he opened you could hear the commotion at the club.
“They know she,” he said as he pointed at you, “is here. There was a snitch at the club, maybe The Architech. Kingpin is on his way with his soldiers. You have to get out now!”, he instructed as he then exited the room as fast as humanly possible.
“Fuck, fuck”, Felicia whispered as she quickly snatched her wig from the chair and placed it over her head. She then turned around to face you with a slight smirk but somehow a concerned look on her face. “I’m sorry to leave you hanging but you can go through where he,” she said as she pointed at Peter, “came from and then I’ll try to contact you”
“Felicia, wait!”, you started but she quickly looked back at you with a slight wince.
“Be careful!”, was the last thing she said before she opened the door and then disappeared.
You gazed back at Peter who had the same concerned look on your face as you probably had. Peter could feel your heart thundering in your chest as you quickly got close to the door and tried to hear what was happening, but as Peter heard too, it seemed like they were trying to kick out some innocent party-goers, there was still commotion so if you had to act, you had to do it now.
“Do you have a plan?”, you asked him as Peter swallowed hard.
“I can’t really go dressed as Spiderman, they have footage of Peter Parker”, he said as you bit your lip.
It meant that you were, technically, on your own. “Okay, let’s simply get out like normal people, and then we can get out with the rest of the people. You go first, try to mix yourself with the crowd and I’ll be just behind you”
“y/n but-”
“Go!”, you whispered-screamed back as Peter simply shut his mouth with doubt drawn all over his face.
Peter was used to dangerous missions; he had been working on this for a long time and he tried to convince himself that this would be like any other mission. But each time he had to go with you, there was always an underlying fear on his eyes, especially now, these moments when you didn’t care about anything else but complete the mission, pushing the boundaries of your safety, not even knowing if you were going to be caught with or without your suit and if he was going to be able to help you or not.
“I’m right here”, Peter whispered back at you, tapping his earbud as he finally opened the door and left you in the small room.
Peter managed to sneakily make his way to the bar, as he watched how many of the usual body guards were trying to lead people out of the bar, one of them was ordering the DJ to turn off the music while Nugent was on the phone, still in the VIP zone with his partners, Peter gulped as he tried to zone out the noise so he could focus on what Nugent was saying.
“Get more people, she’s here”
Peter’s stomach dropped and he knew you had to get out now. He tried to sneak his way behind the bar, trying to not be seen as he quickly asked Karen to connect him.
Black Cat had called you here and now you were right in the lion’s den without less protection than what you usually had, without backup.
“y/n, you have to get out now!”, Peter whispered in your ear as you heard him carefully.
He was fuming, and you could tell by how stentorian his voice was. You had seen Peter annoyed at you a few times, even more, the last couple of weeks but you hadn’t seen him get this mad in a while. The last time had been when you had managed to defeat the guards of Tinkerer; although he had managed to escape, it wasn’t the reason that Peter had been mad at you. He was mad because to get rid of the different tech that Tinkerer had used to literally fuck up your suit, you had decided to ditch it and keep fighting. This had resulted in a broken rib for you thanks to a hand-in-hand fight, Peter had been furious that you hadn’t let him now and that you were being so reckless.
You felt like it had been burned into your mind: His squinty eyes and his set jaw, as his stentorian voice called you out while he swung you through New York in his arm, trying to get you out of there as fast as he possibly could.
And now you were more than sure that he looked the same.
“Fine, fine!”, you answered back as you ordered HAPPY to release the sleeves of your suit, which would be hidden under your oversize leather jacket in case something happened.
“I’m waiting for you at the end of the bar,” Peter said sternly as he took a peek at how many people were left at the bar before he came back down again. “I think we can manage to get out with the rest”
Part of you thought that you could possibly make it out of there without any trouble as you walked out of the small room with your head down and tried to make your way down through the bar with apparently the last group of civilians that was being let out. Another part of you knew that wasn’t the case, and it was right.
“Miss Stark!”, a voice coming from the VIP zone called you and you close your eyes, stopping dead on your tracks as you saw two men in front of you, weapons at hand. “Lovely to have you here,” Nugent said as one of the men nudge you to go towards where Nugent -The Architect- was.
Peter felt like he had stopped breathing as he heard Nugent’s voice calling you out as he quickly peeked once more to see how you were being escorted to the main area off the club. Peter quickly pulled his hair as he covered his eyes, the thoughts rushed through his mind as he tried to think in any way that he could be useful and get you out of there safely, without his identity being compromised.
He knew that you would raise hell either way and you wouldn’t allow them to catch you but his mind was spinning as he thought of a thousand scenarios where he could successfully get you both out of there. Peter peeked again, the tall men were now holding you by your shoulders, you felt like their hold would leave bruises by how tightly they were holding you as you tried to softly twist yourself out of their hold, although they weren’t letting you.
Peter felt like he could see red and if it wasn’t for Karen’s voice telling him that he would be exposed to several bullets if he moved, then he would’ve jumped right then. He couldn’t admit how anger he was; he was shaking as he felt how he bent the wood of the bar to his will, he felt his blood boiling as he saw how close Nugent was to you. He quickly cursed to himself as he hid again, trying to see what on earth he could do about it, soon he managed to see a small box next to the bar: The electrical panel.
You, on the other hand, felt slightly annoyed that they had caught you so easily as you glared at them with your jaw set. Nugent was already grinning at you and the men surrounding him, clearly enjoying himself. He walked closer to you, grasping your chin with his bony hand while you turned your head to the side to get rid of his touch.
“Can’t wait to see what Mr. Frisk will allow me to do with you”, he sneered as he licked his lips, the other minions laughed loudly at his comment.
You simply rolled your eyes, he had to be a fucking sicko. “Oh, I can’t wait to see what he’ll do to you when I go”, you said smugly.
The laughs died down as you could see how Nugent’s noise began to flare up, his grin disappearing as the seconds pass being replaced by his pursed lips. He didn’t seem to have a lot of patience, which honestly you thought was terrible for someone who worked as an extortionist. He quickly slapped you across the face, making you groan as you crouched a bit by the force of it, but you just smiled as you heard the slight movement on your earbud.
“y/n, now!”, Peter’s voice on your ear felt like a shot of adrenaline.
"You are going to regret that", you muttered with a smirk at Nugent.
Before Nugent could say another word, the lights went off in a second, and the whole place was engulfed by darkness. The only light that could be seen as the one on your hands, coming from your repulsors and the fire that they caused as you quickly blasted Nugent that screamed and fell a couple of meters into the VIP zone, while you quickly fired against the men that had been holding you, you laid down on the floor as the bullets began to travel the area. You tapped the arc reactor on your necklace and your suit began to spread over your body.
As soon as it was on, you stood, turning and glaring at the men that were quickly shooting and screaming frantically since they couldn’t really see where you were, while you began to tackle them one by one. You quickly blasted a pulse bolt towards the comrades of Nugent and they fell backward, glass shattering behind them as you continued to fight.
“P, get out!”, you managed to say as you quickly took one of the men, that had been laughing the most about Nugent’s comment, by the neck and threw him towards the bar.
“Look behind you!”, was all that Peter managed to say in a panicky voice as you turned around.
You felt backward as the force of the automatic rifles threw you out of your game, you fell onto a table and groaned as you tried to stand-up but about ten men were surrounding you fairly quickly while they kept firing at you. You could feel the force of the bullets on your suit, knowing that they could tear the nanobots away if they kept firing at the same places for too long, knowing that they knew exactly where your arc reactor was glowing now as it channeled the energy on your suit.
“This is going to leave a bruise”, you muttered to yourself as you quickly fired at them with your repulsors almost blindly, but you only managed to get two of them.
Suddenly, you heard a loud screamed that seemed to get farther and farther away, stopping abruptly, and then something fell to the floor. The other men stopped firing for one second, looking around before another one screamed and stopped abruptly.
Now you were able to hear the familiar twhip!
You saw the men as they gazed confusedly at their surroundings and the others while you raised your head and saw Peter, webbing up each one up and placing web on their mouths.
You smirked at him and you could see he was smiling too. It gave you the perfect time to quickly catch one of the guns and bent it in half so they could no longer be used, before spinning around and kicking another guy in the face, throwing him meters back while Peter still was webbing the other ones up.
Peter saw you getting on your feet, feeling like he could breathe again as you were effectively taking them but as he finished webbing up his sixth one, he heard more steps coming your way, more soldiers from the Maggia Family and he knew that if you were there any longer, then it wouldn’t end up good. Peter quickly crawled his way through the wall and began to fire taser-webs as he immobilized the new men that were arriving, skillfully avoiding their bullets while you blasted the rest of them.
“y/n,” Peter muttered as he avoided the bullets. “We need to get out, now!”
“You don’t think I know that?” you yelled at him while throwing another gun to the air and then blasting it before you punched one of the guys in the face.
Peter quickly landed next to you, webbing up one guy that was firing at you non-stop. Webbing his face and pulling it down so he would crash against the floor. You groaned at the bullets but managed to fire back at the other guys. “What are you doing down here!?”
“Let’s go, now!”
You huffed as you quickly stood up, covering Peter who was laying down behind you as he webbed to the floor any of the men that seemed to recover from the hits. You smirked as you saw only ten men missing, knowing exactly the way you could give Kingpin a perfect goodbye.
“Sorry for ruining the party boys, we need a raincheck!” you announced as the smart missiles rapidly appeared on your shoulders and then were fire to specific parts of the structure, near the men. All of them threw themselves at the floor as the missiles exploded quickly, none of them hurt but soon, the whole club was shaking and all the men were running away from the building as one of the pillars of the structure began to show a crack.
“We need to go now!”, you yelled at Peter who quickly, under the shadows, shot a couple of webs to Nugent that had woke-up from your blast as he cursed you out.
“Done!”, Peter said as he took a hold of your hand and you quickly shot the rooftop of the club, causing a hole to appear and flying through it into the sky at maximum speed.
You managed to look back for a second at the street, exactly at the moment to see Kingpin getting out of a black car. The overly large figure appeared on the streets, a choleric expression was drawn on his face as he saw you fly away. He was wearing a black suit. He had a very prominent ring on his finger as his almost square-shape-like eyebrows framed his glaring eyes that felt like could cut you like glass.
You felt like his image and the anger he held inside of him, that you could simply tell by looking in his eyes, would haunt you each time you close your eyes. You felt a shiver as you turned your sight back to Peter who was holding you tight and decided to focus on getting to a safe place.
It didn’t take long for you to get to Stark Tower as you tried to be as silent as possible, knowing that Pepper and Tony could’ve already arrived and wouldn’t be happy to see you in your suit, with multiple scratched of bullets and whatnot. Peter had been holding tightly to you but he hadn’t said a word as you flew through the city. So, when you landed and Peter simply stayed on the floor as you quickly followed him when your suit retracted, it had been quite a peculiar evening.
Suddenly, he had started chuckling without any notice. “I can’t believe we did that!”
You didn’t know what it was with Peter but the way his chocolate eyes light up and squinted a bit when he smiled broadly, always propped a smile to your face. It felt like almost an instinct to smile with him, to laugh with him and you felt your heartwarming as the seconds passed.
“We wrecked the whole club!”, you laughed with him. “And you weren’t even wearing your suit!”
“You were great!”, he replied with excitement in his eyes. “You dealt with more than fifteen guys and left them all on the floor!”
Peter laughed more with you as you both laid on the floor, watching the night sky with a classic chill wind of autumn, slowly getting closer and closer. You could feel the warmth of Peter’s body and felt the itch to hold him, to lay your head on his chest as you had usually done for so many years.
You turned around as you could still see Peter’s smile drawn on his face, your heart clenched as you stood up a bit, gazing back at him with a regretful look on your face. You knew that what you had done wasn’t okay, bring up all drama that should’ve had been left behind long ago.
“I’m sorry I brought all of our …”, you didn’t know if you could even say relationship but in the end, you couldn’t define it. “All of our mess up”
Peter’s smile softened and he turned serious for a second as he stood up with you and quickly grabbed your hand.
“y/n, I’m sorry about what happened and I would do anything to turn back time and-”
You shook his hold off you as you looked down. “But you can’t and let’s just… we can leave it at that. We are just, partners now and it’s for the better”
“y/n, please”, Peter pleaded as you stood up, trying to stop you.
It hurt.
“Look, I’m not saying that we can’t be friends,” you stated as the lump on your throat grew for a bit, hoping that no tears would escape your eyes this time. “But you moved on and so did I”
Peter felt his heartbreaking on his chest, he sometimes wondered if that’s how you had felt that night. He knew that you were being honest and he didn’t know if he liked this kind of honesty, Peter felt confused, and simply hearing you say that there was nothing he could do, broke him.
“I…”, Peter protested but you turned around as you walked into the penthouse.
“Goodnight, Peter”

Author’s Note: This is one of several stories inspired by these kissing story prompts. Please enjoy! 💕
Prompt: Kissing Jin in the kitchen for no reason at all.

Sweet
You folded your arms across your chest, starting to lose your patience. Jin continued to browse through the refrigerator’s contents, taking his sweet time, seemingly unaware that he was obstructing your path. Finally, your boyfriend settled on a bottle of sparkling water, grabbing it and straightening up. You let out a relieved sigh as he stepped back and you moved towards the fridge, but he shut the door just before you reached it. When he looked back at you, he found you wearing an annoyed expression you couldn’t hide.
“Oh, sorry, jagi.” He apologized with a smile, unscrewing the cap from his water. A fizzy hiss escaped the bottle. “Did you need something out of the fridge?”
A sassy remark immediately came to mind, but you held it back. You were trying to bake him a welcome home treat, but his broad shoulders seemed to block you at every turn in your cramped kitchen.
Choosing not to respond, you only sighed again and quickly pulled open the door to fetch the egg carton. As soon as you turned around, you saw Jin leaning against the counter, casually sipping his drink - right in front of the drawer you were just about to open.
You drew in a slow breath. You were trying not to overreact, you really were. You loved your boyfriend, and you loved having him home. These nights together were far too infrequent; he was often gone for work for weeks at a time and you missed him like crazy until he returned. But, to be perfectly honest, every time he was gone, you got kind of used to him not being around. So when he was around, there was always an adjustment period. It took you some time each time to remember how to share your home, and you had to remind yourself often to not get upset with Jin and his shoulders for simply taking up space.
“Excuse me, baby.” You said as calmly as you could, approaching Jin and touching his arm. “I need to get by you.”
He didn’t hesitate to slide over, allowing you access to the drawer, but instead of moving to his right, as you’d anticipated, he moved to his left - and stopped directly in front of the oven.
Your sigh was unmistakably exasperated this time.
“What?” Jin asked, his eyes widening. “What did I do?”
You pinched the bridge of your nose.
“I’m sorry but could you just… not be in the kitchen for a while?” You asked.
“I just wanted a drink.” Jin frowned. “And to hang out with you, my amazing, beautiful, wonderful, smart, loving, talented, patient girlfriend who I’ve missed so much.”
You felt a pang of guilt - which you suspected was exactly his intention.
“Fine. But if you’re gonna stay in here, please try to keep out of the way.” You said, marching towards him. When you reached him, you leaned around his frame to punch the buttons to set the oven to preheat.
Jin made a crisscross motion over his heart, but his face wore a small smirk.
“And here,” You added, holding out a well-worn recipe card towards him, “Make yourself useful and read me the instructions while you’re at it.”
“I’m nothing if not useful.” Jin quipped, taking the card from you and scanning the recipe.
“What about handsome?” You joked as you organized your ingredients and tools on the counter, hoping he could tell you weren’t really upset with him.
“Useful and handsome.” Jin agreed, and the corner of your mouth lifted.
You glanced at him, and he returned your faint smile, his eyes telling you he wasn’t offended. He then brandished the recipe card, clearing his throat, and your hands hovered over the countertop, poised and ready.
“Step number one,” Jin recited in his best MC voice, “Give your baking assistant a kiss.”
You scoffed.
“What? No, Jin, just read me the instructions! Please.”
Jin feigned offense.
“I am!” He exclaimed. “I’m reading them word-for-word!”
“I’ve made this recipe a million times, I know for a fact it doesn’t say that.” You accused him, reaching for the card, but Jin held it against his chest, shielding it from your view.
“Yah, I’m just reading what it says!” He laughed, swatting your hand away. “It says right here,” He pointed to a random spot on the card, “That you have to give me a kiss before we start or the whole thing will fail.”
“Whatever.” You huffed dramatically, rising to your tip-toes to quickly peck Jin’s smiling lips. “There. Step one complete. Now, what’s step two?”
Jin pretended to study the recipe.
“Hmm, step two is… repeat step one.”
“Jin!” You groaned, shoving his shoulder. “Come on! Seriously, could you stop messing around and just read me the recipe? Please?”
Jin’s teasing expression faded, and he reached for your waist, gently pulling you closer.
“Jagiya,” He chuckled softly, touching your face, “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you. Usually you don’t mind it when I mess around… Is something wrong? Did you have a hard day?”
“I’m just trying to do something nice for you.” You pouted. “I just wanted to make you something sweet to welcome you home, but you’re making it difficult.”
“Jagi…” Jin smoothed his thumb across your cheekbone, “I’m sorry, I didn’t know… I really appreciate you wanting to do something sweet for me… but you should know that you are the only sweet thing I want right now.”
You looked up into Jin’s eyes, and found him gazing at you with such sincerity - such pure, unadulterated love - that your heart instantly melted, and your pout became a repentant frown.
“I’m not being very sweet, though.” You admitted guiltily. “You’re being sweet and I’m treating you like a brat.”
Jin smiled slowly, cupping your face with both hands, and pressed a kiss to your forehead.
“But you’re my brat, and I love you.” He exhaled, inclining your chin. He then lowered his head, his eyes slipping shut as he sought out your lips, and a pleasant shudder ran through you when he found them.
Jin kissed you sweetly at first, taking his time to enjoy the feel of you in his embrace again after so long, but his hands gradually trailed down your body as his soft lips pressed to yours, his languid kisses slowly burning hotter the lower his grasp travelled. Your blood rushing, all thoughts about baking or wanting Jin to stay out of your way rapidly fled your mind, until finally, he reached the backs of your thighs. Breaking his mouth away, Jin hoisted you up and turned around, sitting you on the counter in one quick movement, before you even had time to gasp. He then fit himself between your legs and anxiously reclaimed your lips, parting them with his tongue as his hands kneaded your hips.
And it was at that precise moment that a loud beep sounded over the pounding of your heart, indicating that the oven was done preheating.
“The oven,” You remembered, reluctantly tearing yourself away, “The oven’s ready and I don’t have anything to put in it.”
Jin regarded you with a smoldering expression as both of you panted, trying to catch your breath.
Then a mischievous spark glinted in his eyes.
“I have something to put in your oven.” He purred, and before you could react, he hefted you up over his shoulder.
“Jin!” You cried, laughing as he started carrying you out of the kitchen and towards your bedroom. “What about your dessert?!”
Jin continued striding confidently down the hallway.
“It’s right here.” He replied, patting your bum with his free hand.
You giggled, swinging your arms and legs lazily, not really fighting him.
“At least turn the oven off!”
You couldn’t blame him for his appetite, and you were in no mind to deny him. Because honestly, the way he’d just kissed you… He’d awoken the same hunger in you, too.
Reaching your bed, Jin slid you off of his shoulder and carefully deposited you on the edge of the mattress.
“You’re right, jagi, I’ll turn the oven off. It’s about to get hot enough in here as it is.” He grinned.
You rolled your eyes, but you couldn’t deny the heat you felt spreading throughout your body.
“Okay, go ahead. If you’re sure you don’t want anything sweet tonight.”
Jin bent down to press a lingering kiss to your lips, and a wave of pleasure surged through you.
“I told you, jagi,” He whispered, his face hovering close, “You’re the only sweet treat I want. Tonight and every night.”
You smiled up at him, and stole another kiss, your teeth grazing his plump bottom lip.
“How about sweet and spicy?” You teased.
Jin straightened up, holding his tummy as he laughed his signature laugh.
“I like the sound of that.” He chuckled, making his way towards the door. “Just hold that thought, I’ll be right back.”
“Wait, Jin?” You called after him, and he paused in the doorway.
“Yes, jagi?” He asked.
“I’m glad you’re home.” You smiled sweetly, and you truly meant it. Even though you'd been unjustly annoyed with him earlier, now you wanted nothing more than for Jin to share all of your space.
Jin’s expression softened, his gentle smile reaching his eyes.
“Me too, sweetie.” He agreed. “Me too.”
