Just a quick update on Tales from the Aether :>
I’m in the process of detailing and fleshing out Pursuits which are activities you can pursue and level up in game either during down time or on the road. These include things like alchemy, blacksmithing, cooking, cartography, enchanting, creating spells, etc. To level up your pursuits, you must complete minor challenges such as creating X amount of potions before moving to the next level of Alchemy.
All Pursuits come with quests, story beats, and objectives that the gm and/or player can pull on for their character’s story and arc. These Pursuits can be fun little side details during one shots that may or may not come in handy depending on the adventure or campaign spanning careers that you character pursues allowing them to meet others in the craft, make rivals, find customers, earn commissions, and even meet people in power if they are skilled enough.
I’ll eventually give a more detailed break down of how it works but I’m really enjoying coming up with mechanics and story elements for each of these little side activities :D
#tales from the aether#I can only work a few hours a day before my body revolts#but I’m making slow progress#any progress is progress as they say

Mushy May Day 19: Cuteness Aggression - Rain/Dew
Prompt list by @forlorn-crows can be found here All my Mushy May will be slightly shorter stories and can also be found on ao3 :) Words - 777
For some reason, Dew always loved watching his pack doing the mundane and domestic things around the den. Mountain wiping down the kitchen, Aether hoovering the carpet, Cumulus dusting the shelves, or as he was currently witnessing, Rain doing the dishes.
Seeing the skinny Water Ghoul at the sink, softly swaying and singing to the music playing from his phone as he scrubbed coffee mugs and plates and cereal bowls really made Dewdrop’s heart flutter.
The Fire Ghoul had long given up on watching whatever show Cirrus had left on before leaving for work in favour of watching his Rainbow wash up. The water in the sink was a slightly revolting shade of brown but the Water Ghoul’s grey-blue arms and the inky-black of his hair with the sea-glass horns curling up was enough to make Dew sigh wistfully and kick his feet a little.
“Like what you see or something?” Rain chuckled, feeling the burning stare on the back of his head.
“Well, I can certainly see your best attribute from here.” Dew said as his eyes trailed down to Rain’s butt.
The bassist laughed and wiggled his hips for Dew’s benefit.
The Fire Ghoul purred and kept watching as Rain conquered the stacks of dishes that had piled up in everyone’s tiredness since coming home from the first leg of their tour. And there was a lot so Dew had plenty of time to watch.
However, in typical Dew fashion, he soon got bored and decided to slink on up behind Rain, standing on his tiptoes and wrapping his arms around his waist as he hooked his chin over the taller Ghoul’s shoulder.
“Mmmm, cosy…” Rain purred as Dew’s natural warmth plastered itself along his back, closing his eyes and tipping his head back a little.
“You smell good.” Dew responded, nuzzling Rain’s neck and feeling his nose twitch as the frill of the Water Ghoul’s gills tickled his nose.
“Do I…? Went for a soak yesterday.” Rain responded as he got back to work on his chore.
“And you didn’t invite me? Bitch.” Dew said, squeezing his arms around Rain’s stomach to force an “oof!” from his mouth.
“You were too busy when I went.” Rain defended, slapping Dew’s leg with his tail in revenge.
“Doing what?!” Dew exclaimed.
“Aether.”
“…”
“…”
“That does sound accurate.” Dew acquiesced.
Rain laughed and shook his head, making a few bubbles rise from the suds in the sink and pop against Dew’s horns.
The Fire Ghoul stuck his tongue out before resuming his nuzzling of Rain’s neck.
Rain continued his gentle dancing and singing as he somehow made the inelegant job of cleaning grimy dishes look almost fanciful. Dew was forced to sway along with it and he felt the vibrations of Rain’s voice from where his face was pressed into his neck.
The two have quite the special bond. While to start with, when Rain was summoned, Dew could hardly stand to be in the same room for a whole minute, only seeing everything that was taken away from him in his forced transition to Fire. But it was actually Rain helping Dew see that he was still allowed to be like a Water Ghoul that allowed him to heal. And the two had practically been best friends ever since.
And sometimes that allowed Dew to do his best koala impression against Rain’s back while he did responsible adult things for the both of them.
Dew’s purrs only grew stronger as he kept watching those webbed fingers at work and he nuzzled more against Rain’s scent gland. Though soon enough, just being against Rain wasn’t quite enough for Dew. So, he picked a spot, opened his maw, and bit down.
“Shit!” Rain yelped as he tried to squirm away but Dew’s teeth were planted firmly (and harmlessly) in the meat of his shoulder.
Dew kept himself there and felt himself become a little more contended but it wasn’t quite enough. He went all along Rain’s shoulders and neck, smacking his lips like he was tasting some fine caviar. Which Rain was to him anyway.
“The fuck are you doing, you little gremlin?” Rain laughed.
Dew purred as he nipped his way back along the path he just took.
“You’re so cute like this.”
“You’re a fucking weirdo.” Rain shook his head.
“Mmm, your weirdo.” Dew grinned.
“Nope, you’re going straight back to Aether when he gets home.”
Dew bit down again, not dissimilar to how a dog holds onto their favourite toy when it’s threatened to be taken away.
Rain knew he was fucked by the gesture that was a silent You’re never getting rid of me. Ever.

Birthday Trivia request :) My favorite planeswalker is Saheeli, so anything related Saheeli or Saheeli adjacent like Kaladesh, Energy, Huatli, or honestly red-blue artificers would be rad. Thank you Mark for everything you do.
The original face of Kaladesh was going to be Chandra. But then we realized she made more sense for Aether Revolt which was about revolution. We needed a planeswalker that represented invention. So we made one, and that was Saheeli.
Happy Birthday!

What if reader was kidnapped? How would Legacy react? (AKA I had a nightmare abt this shi and need Legacy comfort for it ;-;)
i'm banishing your nightmares to the AETHER i hope you feel better soon!! here's some Legacy to help you out
surprisingly, Childe is the one who panics in this case, not Legacy. the Harbinger's breath catches, lungs feeling tight and cold as ice as he grips the wall, almost crushing the wood. no, no, no no no- this was exactly what he tried to prevent! he knew this would happen, that he'd end up hurting you somehow, even if indirectly- Legacy's snarl cuts through his racing thoughts, drowning out all else. his Abyssal half is furious, and this time, that actually helps. it gives Childe something to focus on, directing his energy towards rage and the need to get you back, make sure you're safe instead of falling into despair. with a final, slow exhale, Childe steps back, allowing Legacy's consciousness to take control while he goes for a long rest until you're back in his arms
Legacy only needs to catch your scent to track down where those revolting, heinous people took you. there is no plan- the plan is to kill and retrieve you- and there's little need for thought when you're as strong as an Abyssal monster. his gaze zeroes in- you in a heap, your disgusting kidnappers staring at him in horror- in about five seconds, they stare no longer, gaping endlessly through mouthfuls of blood. but he softens as he turns to you, lowering his body to the ground and crooning gently, carefully nudging you into his arms. his claws run up and down your back to soothe your trembles, leaning your head into his fluff. shhh, you don't need to say anything. just rest, regain your strength and bearings. Legacy spreads his wings, silently taking to the sky, away from the world, away from those who dared to hurt you
bringing you all the way home

I just read the Planeswalker's Guide for Aetherdrift and I found it pretty hilarious what they did to Kaladesh/Avishkar. Hey, remember the Aether Revolt, the focus of the story when we last were in this beloved plane, that even has a small set named after it? So, it turns out that the government created after it was only barely less corrupt than the one it was trying to take down. But don't worry! A few years later, while we were looking at other stuff, there was a second, mostly unrelated revolution, and this one did work out well and now people are happy and the government is fair.
It's pretty much "Poochie died on the way to his home planet" played straight

Hi, I enjoy reading your lore takes! Would love to hear your thoughts on the in-universe events that led to the Avishkar renaming.
Personally, I think the out of universe reasons for the renaming make sense, but I'm disappointed with the way the consulate fell "off screen" and apparently became a beloved, utopian government. After a whole set arc about a complex political movement leading to hopeful but incomplete reform in Aether Revolt, just saying there was a "popular, bloodless" revolution gives me "somehow palpatine returned" vibes :/
Hmm, yeah. I admit I don't know as much about the plane's lore/sociopolitics or the conversation around its cultural sensitivity as I'd like to, but it did feel a bit odd to paper over the Consulate/Renegade storyline with "there was a bloodless revolution and everything worked out". It feels almost... weirdly sanitized given what I'm used to in Magic story?
That said, I hesitate to provide too much commentary about a plane I'm not familiar with when it comes to political and revolutionary themes. I'm only really comfortable discussing New Phyrexia in depth that way, and the contrasts between those two revolutions are not the most informative to discuss here, imo. (Probably.)
There may very well be good reasons for the offscreen "bloodless revolution" plot point, in or out of universe. I'm just not familiar with them. (For one, I've heard that it could be a real-life event being referenced.)
Overall, though, I'm happy with the change and glad that Wizards decided to take fans of color seriously when they raised concerns. I also like that there is an in-universe explanation, showing a commitment to both continuity and inclusion on the storyline level.
