Every Last Fear by Alex Finlay #BookReview #Thriller
After reading #AlexFinlay's new book, I knew I had to go back and read his other works. #EveryLastFear is the book that launched him into literary stardom. It's a taut #thriller with a touch of #policeprocedural mixed in. #StMartinsPress #bookreview
“They found the bodies on a Tuesday.” So begins this twisty and breathtaking novel that traces the fate of the Pine family, a thriller that will both leave you on the edge of your seat and move you to tears. After a late night of partying, NYU student Matt Pine returns to his dorm room to devastating news: nearly his entire family—his mom, his dad, his little brother and sister—have been found…

If Something Happens to Me
by Alex Finlay / 4 stars
This book has a lot of small, moving threads working at once. While the scene was being set clearly, the thing I struggled with at the beginning was connecting with the characters. Our time and glimpse of them was so brief that it cut some of the feeling out of the equation.
Some books I read for a strong character connection, and some are more ruled by plot. This fell in the latter category, but it was so well done. I did connect with some characters in the end, though the pacing drew me in little by little until I couldn't put this down.
A little bit of romance, a set of chain reactions that inexorably draw in all the players, and a procedural mystery that is so satisfying.
This is my first time reading Alex Finlay, but I hope that it's only the first of many!

If Something Happens to Me by Alex Finlay
You can't go home again isn't just a literary cliché.
Alex Finlay's If Something Happens to Me is a twisty, globe-trotting thriller fueled by insanely readable prose and whiplash pacing that makes it damn-near unputdownable. The twists upon which this house-of-cards is built are effectively executed, but never quite reach the unpredictability that the blurbs lead you to expect. There are some narrative/character issues here and there, but they rarely detract thanks to the way Finlay maneuvers them. In fact, most of the issues only ever seem to add to the suspense and addictive readability of the book as a whole. This isn't great literature, the climax isn't quite as satisfying as it could've been, and it's probably not going to be the best book you read this year. But, it is an efficiently riveting piece of thriller-fiction, and—much like the many streaming thrillers that it resembles—a thoroughly enjoyable way to spend an evening (or two).
7/10

The Night Shift
Title: The Night Shift Author: Alex Finlay Genre: thriller Thank you, NetGalley, for this book. I read Every Last Fear a while ago and thought it was pretty good. I loved this one and flew through it in a couple…

I didn’t read as much as I’d like to because I only have time to read during my kids’ naptime.

★★★★
GoodReads Synopsis:
It’s New Year’s Eve 1999. Y2K is expected to end in chaos: planes falling from the sky, elevators plunging to earth, world markets collapsing. A digital apocalypse. None of that happens. But at a Blockbuster Video in Linden, New Jersey, four teenage girls working the night shift are attacked. Only one survives. Police quickly identify a suspect who flees and is never seen again.
Fifteen years later, in the same town, four teenage employees working late at an ice cream store are attacked, and again only one makes it out alive.
My Review:
My first thought upon finishing the book: why wasn't this pregnant FBI agent on desk duty?!
Agent Sarah Keller was doing way too much for her to be 8 1/2 months pregnant with twins. She annoyed me throughout the entire book.
Something I've noticed with a few thrillers/mysteries that I've read is that the police are always unhelpful and oftentimes in on the crime. This one was no different (sorry for the semi-spoiler).
The story arc of Jesse was, mehh. I see how she is needed to add the drama and suspense but, overall I wish they had just kept her as a side character and not smack dab in the middle of everything.
I get that this was supposed to be a murder mystery with some serial killer vibes sprinkled in there -- and who doesn't love a serial killer -- but, the last couple of chapters were quite unbelievable for me. See my note on Agent Keller from above. In these books, it's like the cops throw all caution and protocol to the wind and just do whatever; I don't like that.
The epilogue didn't give what it was supposed to give. Chris & Ella-- which reminds me, why were there any survivors? Did I miss that? Was he sloppy and forgot? Did he spare them for some reason? Keller and her husband (I forgot his name, that fast. Figures). What happened with Atticus? How is his mother? So many unanswered questions which left me a little disappointed even though, I get it -- not every thread that is woven together to make this story is going to get tied up in a pretty bow at the end, but still.
Good pacing. Good writing. Character descriptions were good. Took me a while to figure everything out. The twist at the end was unexpected. Not too shabby of a book.
One-Word Summary: Maternity Leave (two words, sue me)
