El coso que usaba para cortarme las uñas explotó en mi mano, se me rompió uno por primera vez en mi vida, no sabía que se rompían, pensé que solo perdían su filo. ¿Por qué ahora? Porque otra vez estoy sin trabajo, obvio, ideal para descubrir nuevas maravillas de la caducidad tecnológica. Pero el plato fuerte vino con la heladera: pierde gas refrigerante que luego de investigar un poco supe que se llama freón. Además descubrí lo que me cuesta arreglarla o comprar otra, descarté esas posibilidades. Mis opciones son usarla mientras siga enfriando, usarla hasta morir intoxicado, usarla hasta que la casa explote, aunque en general afirman que las versiones actuales del gas tiene un update que no lo vuelve peligroso para la salud ni inflamable. Eso sí, no pudieron solucionar el tema de su aroma, así que hasta nuevo aviso mi casa huele a culo. También la naturaleza estaba esperando que me quedara sin trabajo para revelarme nuevos misterios, por ejemplo el olor a papa podrida: domina principalmente una fuerte tonalidad de olor a pata de adolescente macho entre 14 y 16 años. Debajo de esa profunda sensación que te abraza, se encuentran pequeñas notas de olor a caca humana de adulto en estado sólido, entrelazada con otras cacas como la bosta de caballo o vaca, y a veces hasta detecto una pincelada de pichí de mosca. Para compensar estas calamidades he conquistado nuevos horizontes: Uno de mis logros dentro de mi pobreza es afeitarme con la misma herramienta maximizando su rendimiento en un 300 o 400%. Si rinde 10 afeitadas yo le saco 30 o 40. Me doy cuenta que no da más por diversas razones, pero la última que me pasó fue un poco extrema: me raspó. Pensé que me había cortado como cualquier ser humano que se afeita pero no, porque yo no soy cualquier ser humano, soy el peor, así que la cosa del demonio me raspó como quien se raspa cuando se cae y se da contra el piso y se lastima las rodillas o las manos. Ya no cortaba: lijaba. Estoy ansioso por conocer qué nuevas sorpresas me depara la desocupación.

This advice came from a well-meaning woman with NZ poetry on her business card and an English accent in her mouth. I have been thinking about this advice. The convention of italicising words from other languages clarifies that some words are imported: it ensures readers can tell the difference between a foreign language and the language of home. I have been thinking about this advice. Marking the foreign words is also a kindness: every potential reader is reassured that although you're expected to understand the rest of the text, it's fine to consult a dictionary or native speaker for help with the italics. I have been thinking about this advice. Because I am a contrary person, at first I was outraged — but after a while I could see she had a point: when the foreign words are camouflaged in plain type you can forget how they came to be there, out of place, in the first place. I have been thinking about this advice and I have decided to follow it. Now all of my readers will be able to remember which words truly belong in -[end italics]- Aotearoa -[italics]- and which do not.
