the true eclipse

Buckle up, folks, this is going to get long.

What seems to be the most popular theory people have derived from the symbolism in this series casts Akk as the sun and Ayan as the moon in an eclipse. @grapejuicegay (kk) and I, through a number of posts and a bunch of dms, have been breaking that idea down to its barest functions, starting with:

“I don’t actually think that Akk is the sun. I think that credit belongs entirely to Suppalo, and Akk, [...] is just a representation of that sun.

I think the eclipse is Ayan’s influence on Akk blocking out the influence of the sun.” (ref: kk)

Suppalo's emblem is literally an image of the sun. And it’s not just Akk being affected here by the moon! It’s everyone! It’s Kan, Thua, Wat, and the entire student body.

“During an eclipse, when the moon covers the sun the sun’s influence is reduced. So if control over the students is through the sun, the moon covering it would mean the loss on control.”

That made me think though about Ayan saying "even if i wasnt here this would still be happening" - so yes Aye is the moon to Akk, and a figure many of the characters go to for advice - but as a whole The World Remembers group is actually the moon to Suppalo.

And while Ayan supports The World Remembers, he’s not actually behind what they’re doing. The protests started before he joined the school. He’s given them encouragement, but lately they’ve been growing their own support from others in Suppalo, and they’ve done that all themselves.

And kk had something absolutely galaxy brained to say about that too in our dms:

The World Remembers WOULD still be doing everything they're doing now without ayan around and they WOULD reach the same conclusions and the only reason we don't think that more is because this show has been diverting our attention this entire time. i've been rewatching old episodes a little bit and the only reason there's any connection between world remembers organising stuff and ayan is because AKK KEPT SAYING IT and he was always wrong but he said it so much that it just became this thing that was like, yeah ofc.

WHICH ALSO. SUCH a good way to show brainwashing??? they're not even showing it, they're just doing it to us [the audience] so that at some point we might realise it's happening and it's like you're not special, it can happen to anybody. everybody is susceptible to propaganda.”

And here’s the real kicker: BOTH of these parties - The World Remembers group and Ayan - have differing motivations that are leading towards the same goal. Both are devoted to searches for the truth, and are uncovering oppressive regulations in the process. Aye is searching for the truth about Dika, and The World Remembers is searching for the truth about the curse - asking for a proper investigation into who could be trying to hurt the students and tearing down Suppalo’s credibility as they go.

(there's already been a lot of analysis into the other ideas they represent: the fight for no uniforms which has led to a criticism of homophobic society and the way oppressive systems benefit from heteronormativity specifically - so i won't say more of that here)

The point is...the real eclipse is truth and knowledge outshining fear and oppression.  

...But surely Akk has a bigger role in this, right?

To us, Akk can't be the sun because he isn't being covered up, or smothered, like the moon does to the sun - he's being brought out of his shell instead.

And so here is a special shoutout to @singharit​’s theory that made kk and i lose our minds:

“something something the way how akk is associated with water and the sea and how so many moments i can think of that involve him opening up to ayan also involve water in some way. [...]  

the way how ayan is the moon, steady and sure [...] being not just a light in the dark for the other students wrt truth and justice and the concept of shame, but also the very thing that controls the tides with its gravitation pull.

We both adore this idea, not just because water is the exact opposite of fire, but also because it's a symbol of change and erosion. The longer Akk spends around Aye and his influence, the more he opens up, the more he changes, the more he questions, the more his original brainwashing by Suppalo/Chadok/the sun to focus on rules wears away into embracing the freedom of expression and being himself.

As Akk’s relationship with Ayan grows, the eclipse draws closer, which leaves only one question left to ask: What will happen when the eclipse arrives and the tides reach their peak?

TLDR; The real eclipse is truth and knowledge (the moon) outshining fear and oppression (the sun). Akk is affected by the moon, changing like the tides the longer he is in it’s influence.

You lived a pretty good life. Your parent(s) were active in your life, you had a wonderful boyfriend that would burn the universe to the ground for you, and you got whatever you wanted. Miles kept his job pretty under wraps so you didn’t know what he did, all you knew was that he was buying the newest miu miu jacket and he funded your bath and body works addiction. Everyone knew you loved Miles but they questioned whether or not he actually loved you.

It was no secret that Miles wasn’t as affectionate as you; everyone around you noticed it, your parent(s), your friends and even other family members mentioned it to you:

“You could do so much better, y/n"

“I mean, it seems like he doesn’t even want to date you fr” your cousin remarked

“Yeah are you holding him against his will?” Your aunt chimed in

“I am not!!! He’s just like that” you defended

You were very open with your affection; kissing, hugging and cuddling him a lot. Miles on the other hand, showed his love differently by buying you stuff and spending time with you. He was often very cold and closed off towards other people and they assumed it was that way for you but it wasn’t. Miles was affectionate but he didn’t show it at all for fear of people using you as a weapon against him.

When you got to your room, you felt yourself tear up. I mean sure, miles was nonchalant but that didn’t mean he didn’t love you. Plus Miles would tell you if he didn’t want you, right?

You couldn’t stand with the idea that Miles was doing this out of pity and not out genuine love for you so you texted Miles:

this didn’t help the aching in your chest so you tried to fall asleep and forget about it but it haunted your dreams that night. Usually, your dreams are pretty calm but in this one, you were running from Miles and when he caught up to you, he said:

“I DON'T LOVE YOU, Y/N. WHY CAN’T YOU UNDERSTAND THAT??? I wish it could’ve been different” Miles pulled out what looked like a claw but before anything could happen, you woke yourself up.

You woke up in a cold sweat and saw a message from Miles:

3:02 AM

Miles: what’s up, Mami?

4:45 AM

You: Do you love me?

Miles: What happened?

You: You didn’t answer my question

Miles: yeah, why?

The next day came and you met Miles after school:

“So what’d they say?” Miles questioned

“They said I’m forcing you into a relationship” you admitted, feeling defeated

“Oh give me a break, y/n. Fuck them and their opinions, they don’t know us” Miles said, rolling his eyes

“Miles, they’re my family. And honestly I can see why they believe that” you spoke up

Miles took a deep breath:

“Why? Because I’m not jumping you 24/7? That’s not who I am and you knew that when you decided to date me. As for the family thing, they just jealous of what we have.” Miles said, stoically

“It wouldn’t kill you to show me a bit of affection, Miles” you replied quickly

“no. But it could kill you” he muttered

“excuse me???” you said

“Just know that I do love you, Y/n. I’m sorry that you don’t feel the same” Miles said

“And why are you speaking so cryptically lately?? If you got something to say, speak.” You argued, a sudden burst of masculine energy and ferocity flowing through your veins

“Watch it, y/n. Stay in your place, it’s easier.” Miles said dangerously, he spoke a warning to you

You ran away and went to your room, rushing past your concerned parent as you heard them talk on the phone:

“Yeah, she’s still mad about Sunday hahaha” your parent laughed

“Yeah well we were just joking, you know how we do” The person on the other end spoke, you assumed it was your aunt.

“You know kids y/a/n(your aunts name), especially Y/n. She’s so soft and I don’t want her to get hurt.” Your parent said

“Well at the end of the day, she’ll be okay. And it will be a lesson to her, everyones first love is heartbreaking” your aunt said

“yeah, I guess. Well I gotta go. Love you” your parent departed

“Love you too” Your aunt said

You played crying in your pillow because of what they said and because of your argument. Soon, you heard a knock on the door:

“Oh Heyyyy Miles” your parent greeted

“Hi. Is Y/n here?” Miles asked

“Yeah she’s in her room” Your parent said, opening the door for him

“okay” Miles said, walking in and knocking on your door

“a thank you would’ve been nice’ your parent muttered under their breath. Miles full well heard this but he chose to ignore it because he would have a few choice words with your parent and none of them would be nice

You heard three knocks on your door.

“Y/n? Baby, let me in” he said

“Go away, Miles” you sniffled

“Mami, imma get in one way or another so you may as well just open the door.” Miles threatened

You opened the door with watery eyes and tear stained cheeks. Miles’ heart broke immediately.

“I’m sorry for not giving you the love you deserve. I know I’ll never be good enough for you and you deserve better than me. Your family is right but I need you to know that I am so in love with you, it scares me. When we aren’t together, my chest hurts; I can’t be without you, y/n. I love you so much and I’m sorry I treat you like shit. I can change, mi amor."

“Oh Miles” You hugged him as tight as you could

you were sat down on the couch, feet kicked up as you read your book. jude was sitting beside you with his attention fully on the large tv in front of you.

he was watching a show you had no idea about, and you were reading a book he couldn’t care less about.

it was perfect.

you turned the page, engrossed in the words and phrases printed on the thin paper. your legs were laid across jude’s lap and he kept his hand on your calf, his other shoving popcorn in his mouth.

the crunching was driving you mad, so you finally asked “could you pass me some popcorn, please?”

either he didn’t hear you or ignored you, because he did not even bat an eye.

“jude..”

again, nothing.

“jude!”

finally he turned his head to you, eyebrows furrowed.

“what?” his mouth was stuffed with popcorn which was fully on display as he chewed with an open mouth.

“i said, could you pass me some popcorn?”

he let out a small groan that was almost unnoticeable before reaching to his side, grabbing the bowl, and holding it towards you. he turned his head back to the tv and was once again absorbed in his show.

you took a handful of popcorn, chewing it softly. his arm was still outstretched with the bowl towards your face. taking advantage of this, you continued eating.

after half a minute or so, jude finally turned to you, watching you greedily eat his popcorn. without a word, he pulled it back towards him, giving you a stink eye.

“mine.” he spat out like a child before turning back to the tv.

you stared at him in disbelief. this man is something else.

you went back to reading your book, ignoring jude’s childish antics.

after some time, you heard a ding from the kitchen.

you had put some cookies in the oven as per jude’s request, and they were finally done.

of course you had to get up to go to the kitchen, but jude’s arms were now fully rested on your calves.

“jude, love.”

again, no answer.

“jude!” you were growing impatient with his selective hearing.

he turned to you with a quick roll of his eyes. “what now?”

you sighed at his attitude, “cookies.” you didn’t elaborate further, assuming he would understand you.

but he just kept staring at you blankly.

“the cookies.. in the oven!” finally your words registered, but he still had a confused look on his face.

“so what does that have to do with me..?” he questioned, genuinely confused as to why you were telling him this.

you let out a breath. “get off my legs. i need to go get the cookies before they burn.” jude’s idiocy had started to hurt your head.

after a final ohh, he raised his arms off your legs and you swung them off the couch. you looked at the table in front of you, searching for your bookmark.

it finally caught your eye on the floor near jude’s feet.

“jude, pass me that.”

for once, he heard you the first time. he looked at you before following your gaze to the floor. he spotted the bookmark and his shoulders hunched over grudgingly.

“ughh whyyy..” he whined before reaching down to grab the bookmark. it really wasn’t all that difficult. he tossed it on the couch and huffed before turning back to the tv.

you rolled your eyes and placed the bookmark between the pages. you stood up and headed to the kitchen, taking out the cookies from the oven. they weren’t anything special, just some pillsbury christmas cookies - but damn were they good.

you placed them onto a rack to cool for a minute or two before tidying up, the speakers blasting jude’s tv show.

at first it was bearable, but now it was just annoying.

“jude, turn that down please!” you called out from the kitchen. you peeked over to see if he heard you, and he did.

he rolled his eyes, which was expected, but boy were you shocked by his next actions.

“mi mi mi mi, turn that down please, meh meh meh.”

he was mocking you.

his face was screwed in an odd expression and he tilted his head side to side as he mimicked you, his voice going a few octaves higher.

“you have got to be shitting me..” you whispered to yourself, perplexed at this newfound sassiness.

you finally stepped to the side so that he could see you. your hand was on your hip and one of your eyebrows was raised.

“what was that, sorry?” there was sarcasm laced in your tone.

his widened eyes shot up to you. he reached over to the remote and turned down the volume.

“nothing..”

“mmhm.”

you stepped back in the kitchen and layed the cookies on a plate, bringing them to the living room and placing them down on the table in front of you.

“the inside is still kinda hot, so don’t-“

once again, ignored. jude reached over to the plate and grabbed a cookie. he quickly took a bite before huffing and letting the food from his mouth drop into his hand.

“oh my god- ahh! ouch!” he shouted out and grabbed a water from the table. he drank it, moaning in pain.

he finished the whole glass before placing it down onto the table. he was gasping and panting for air like he was dying.

“you could’ve warned me, y/n!”

your eyebrows shot up in disbelief.

“first of all, they weren’t that hot, and second, i did warn you!” you scolded as your hands raised defensively.

he huffed in annoyance before blowing softly on the broken cookie in his hand. he finally managed to eat it, chewing softly on the fresh food.

“mmm..” he moaned in satisfaction.

“it’s, mpgh, good, thanks.” he said with a full mouth, looking up to your face. you couldn’t help but let a smile break out. you didn’t even make these, really, but he was too cute not to adore.

“you like them? good.”

his eyes crinkled as he returned your smile, finally not showing you attitude. he patted over beside him before brushing off popcorn crumbs.
