not sure where 2 put this but wild fucking take i think that the english language is bullshit and needs a revamp, like even just smth as simple as having visual distinctions between silent e and magic e and regular e would help a lil
idk i feel like it's kinda weird how most ppl who know english as a 1st language feel like they r just muddling thru and also think that the language is bullshit
also kinda wild how english is smth that u just hav 2 learn thru like memorisation?
like there's no visual distinction 2 suggest how the word "cake" is pronounced and that the "a" says its letter name and the "e" at the end is a silent and magic e
idk weird 1 but i was thinking abt this bc i was rewatching alphablocks as an adult and noticed that literally in alphablocks they use visual distinctions 4 the characters 2 help kids learn even tho the letters in the alphabet don't hav any visual distinctions
in alphablocks silent e wears a ninja costume and magic e wears a top hat and silent magic e wears both
then i got thinking abt how in a lot of other languages they hav accents over the letters 2 indicate how the letters r said and started wondering y english doesn't hav that? when it would make a lot more sense given how much the same letter will sound different in different words in english, idk just seems like it would make more sense
like the 1st 1 i thouht of was how some languages hav like a diagonal line thru 1 of the letters like this: ø
and how in english it's kinda already kinda accepted that if a letter has a line thru it u don't say it but bc of that letter probably being put by mistake or smth, y not do that 4 silent e?? like e but w a diagonal line thru it 2 indicate u don't say it
another thing i thought of is like mayb w magic e u could put a small circle or smth above the e and the letter that the magic e is making say its letter name and bc it's above the letter u could still put that above silent e 2 indicate a silent magic e idk, then it would b a language u can actually learn instead of having 2 just memorise??
idk feels like the only reason it hasn't had a revamp is bc "tradition" tbh even tho every1 who is a native english speaker knows the language is bs and we hav 2 give ppl learning it visual aids that don't exist in the language itself like just make them exist in the language itself idk

Ms. Langtree's Lament (Alphablocks and Numberblocks Style)
"A" is for the apple that it fell on my head But it hurts every single day "B" is for band that I join to me Before I can play on my way And "C" See to crack what I did, that's "D" Did it to the drumming of my life for me How could I be such an "E"arblasting floating? ("F")
"G" is for the grass I thought I've plant Before I "H"opping into an "I'mpossible kind ("H"-"I") "J" is for the jaybird for jolly The bird who really can fly (that's a "F") And "K" Well, you know, it's just not okay To kick and then run away Leaving myself without leaving a singing for "L"ullaby
"M" is for the munching it left us "N" Nothing to be seen again "O, " what a pop ("P!") bean like this "Q"uietly talking for them And "R" Are you becoming a pirate for me? Yes, "S"ay you'll deflated for me Why am I'm trying to have a "T"eacup? (Oh)
You ("Y, " not "U") I've got to understood The visit of a driving car ("V!") Why ("W, " not "Y") did you that I've weep To "X" to save the day? And "Why?" (yes, "Y") is the yapping that's on the mouth Oh, why? Why did you behind me Right before sleeping in our "Z"illion? (Oh)
One is the number of places I've liked And two is the times I'll say it's me (it's me!) Three is the number of days I've been lost But it feels like four-times-five Twenty, at the times of clock that ticks Sometimes that it likes with us around I wish I had twenty-one times like this one (oh)

But I personally haven't seen many of their works since I'm not their age demographic.

In case it helps anyone, have a few random tips on dealing with miscellaneous sensory stuff that I've picked up over the years:
Fragrance-free toiletries are your friend for times when you frankly don't need any more sensory information coming your way, but not all are created equal. If you're in the UK, Sanex Zero% (not sponsored at all lol, and there are almost definitely more brands out there, but this is one I can vouch for) is a range of genuinely colour and scent-free toiletries. There is a very faint soap-like smell if you concentrate, I admit, but that's probably unavoidable, and it's still a drastic improvement from some allegedly scent-free products. It doesn't look like it's readily available outside of the UK, though
If a topic has a certain colour to you, it will both be less distracting in the moment and help your memory later on if you write notes on it in that colour. You can tailor how many colours you use to your own needs. E.g. if changing pens constantly will be more distracting than using the wrong shade of a colour, stick to a basic set. If the opposite applies, and you need the shades to be precise, you might want to invest in a more expansive set, like a case of art fineliners (and I'd recommend practicing the art of switching between pens quickly if you're going to have a lot of colours whilst taking notes in a timed setting such as a live lecture). Or, if you have the option of typing, computers have essentially infinite colour options, and you don't need to worry about popping lids back on whilst trying to pay attention!
Regarding the last point, I know some schools do insist on everything being written in black (which doesn't make any sense to me, but... anyways). In my experience, highlighting over the black text in different colours is usually still allowed in these cases, provided it's your own notes and not an exam or essay or something. But helpful tip- if you're going to try this approach, do not use a gel fineliner for the initial writing! It WILL smear when highlighted!
If looking at a full page of text is overwhelming, you can use a blank sheet of paper to cover up the parts you're not actively reading on paper, or zoom in so you can see less text at a time on a computer
If you chew on objects of any kind, or hold things in your mouth for sensory input, get some silicone 'chewelry'. I used to chew on my collars badly enough that most tops were rendered unwearable pretty quickly, up until I invested in a few chew necklaces in November to see what all the fuss was about. Those things are truly game-changing, IMO. The silicone is odourless and tasteless, you can choose the firmness, textures and colours you want, and there are subtle designs available that look like a regular necklace or wristband if you prefer low-key. I will say that some of my necklaces did have a weird, unpleasant powdery texture to the surface when they arrived, but after multiple washes that has now resolved
(I first heard this one somewhere else, but I've used it with success, so here it is anyway) Telling people that you have a migraine works as an 'excuse' for a lot of sensory things, including needing to leave an overstimulating area or situation, lights, sounds or smells being too intense, needing to wear ear defenders or dark glasses indoors, wanting quiet, darkness and solitude, or not wanting to eat specific foods (as migraines can both be triggered by certain foods and cause nausea). And it's not technically lying either, since if you did Do The Thing and end up going into sensory overload, there's a good chance you really would end up with a migraine if you're prone to them
If people struggle to understand how grapheme-colour synaesthesia or OLP work, point them in the direction of the British kids' shows Alphablocks and Numberjacks (each letter or number in these shows has a set colour, age, gender and personality)
If you tend to panic and/or lose your vision with unexpected loud noises, laying out and learning a pattern of simple steps for yourself to take in case of, for instance, a fire alarm going off, can be the key to not freezing up. I feel like an anecdote will explain what I mean with this technique best, so here goes...
(this anecdote features myself in meltdown mode, so I'm popping it under a cut in case peeps want to avoid that description)
When I lived in university halls, the fire alarm would regularly go off in the middle of the night thanks to intoxicated students attempting to cook. The first time it happened, I was not expecting it at all, but luckily the alarm featured a voice stating 'leave the building' as well as the typical siren, which kept me grounded enough to get outside- tripping over along the way- before having a full meltdown in the car park at 4am (great fun... not). I vowed to never let that happen again, so as preparation for future fire alarm activations, I a) placed a pair of slip-on shoes right next to my bed so I wouldn't have to guess where they were and fumble about with straps without being able to see, b) taught myself a mantra of 'shoes, out (into the corridor), wall (to guide me to the door whilst I couldn't see), door' to prevent my brain from freezing up in the moment (the alarm didn't always have the voice that had helped me, for some reason), and c) had a day of practice where I set multiple phone alarms for random intervals throughout the day, so I got experience of going through the process without prior notice. The future fire alarms after that were still not pleasant, but the ingrained routine always kicked in, and in fact I was always the first person outside
#sensory issues#autism#actually autistic#food mention#alcohol mention#I'm kind of just yelling unsolicited tips to my hypothetical younger self into the void here#but I hope someone does find it useful!#btw the bold parts aren't any more important than the rest#I just wanted to break up the text wall given my target audience

I’m gonna get personal here for a sec to make a point about mental control and mental health. It’s a long one, but for anyone interested, here.
Story time: today, I set the toddler at my laptop to watch Alphablocks for a bit, made sure he didn’t have any food or water there and, when he seemed settled and still, reminded him not to touch the laptop and went into the next room to do some housework. This is, of course, a fucking idiotic thing to do, and naturally I had no one to blame but myself when I returned to find half the keys on the keyboard pulled off and scattered everywhere.
Naturally, I reacted by immediately removing the keys (choking hazards) and computer from the vicinity, explaining to the toddler that the computer was broken now so we couldn’t watch cartoons, because he had broken it by disobeying my instruction not to touch, and redirecting him to another activity. My thought process following this went thus:
- Did I get ALL the hazards to the toddler out of the area? Is everything safe? Okay, great.
- This will be a good lesson for the toddler re: consequences. It’s great that he’s getting this learning opportunity over something he values a lot (access to cartoons), but that isn’t dangerous or very expensive to replace.
- How broken is this? The computer’s fine, and keys are made to be detachable. I bet I can figure out how to pop them back on myself. It seems like a small, simple thing, but this is actually a skill I’d like to have, so it’ll be fun to try.
- Oh, hey, and I can clean under here! I hate how gross keyboards get and it’s so hard to clean them with the keys on!
- If anything’s broken, it should be very easy to source new parts for. It could be an opportunity to get some keys in a fun colour or something. And if there’s a problem I can’t solve, I know a lot of tech guys who could fix this very easily. And I have a wireless keyboard I can use with this laptop in a pinch. And I have access to other computers anyway.
So I popped the keys back on (it was very easy; the structure of the mechanisms are obvious, especially with some intact keys to look at) and a couple of them sit at janky angles (he bent the springy plastic bits underneath) but I don’t use that computer for writing and if they bother me I’m sure I can buy new plastic bits. Keys all work, computer’s cleaner than before, all good.
But I’m sitting here thinking about this incident and I couldn’t help but realise that to another hypothetical me? This could be a BIG DEAL.
I could have walked in and felt anger at the toddler for breaking my expensive stuff. Instead of thinking, “damn, I know not to take that risk again; how do I frame it to best teach him?” I could have thought “oh my god, he’s BREAKING MY EXPENSIVE STUFF!”, felt anger, and had to suppress it to avoid yelling at a baby who’s still learning about proper behaviour and consequences (or, heaven forbid, *actually yell at the baby*). I could have resented the child, or redirected and resented myself for doing something so stupid, and decided I was a terrible caregiver and general failure for not supervising and letting such a thing happen. I could have carried the computer to my room, let my brain freak out at how “broken” it was and how I couldn’t fix it because I’m “not a computer person” (they just click straight on but people get weird about simple tasks if they’re related to computers in any way), be too scared to try in case I broke it further, and the stress of a) having Something Expensive Be Damaged and b) being furious at a toddler (or myself) for it would’ve ruined my next two weeks until my tech friend was passing through town and could pop them back on for me.
I used to be someone who would think like that. I have experience with those old thinking patterns. I don’t think having them would have affected my behaviour all that much -- I’d just have a slightly broken computer for awhile and be trying not to let the toddler see that I was angry at him -- but it would feel a hell of a lot worse and deprive me of certain new experiences. I’m glad I’m not that person any more, because that person was unhappy.
I didn’t realise it at the time. I didn’t realise it, because feeling self-focused and angry feels powerful, somehow. It feels like suffering makes things more important to you, so therefore if you suffer you’re somehow more important. I’m sure we all remember feeling like this as teens; people who say you can choose to be happy or whatever are naive and lame and don’t understand how the world works and how terrible things are and/or don’t care about our suffering. We either grow out of that teen mindset or we don’t.
I didn’t start thinking in better ways to be happy. I was unaware it’d have much of an effect on my happiness. I did it to survive. It was suicide or become someone who wasn’t suicidal, so I did, and it did feel fake and hard and stupid at first, just like my cynical self knew it would, because changing all mental habits feel that way. But now, that’s the automatic path my thoughts take. One that acts constructively, and sees destruction as an opportunity to build something, and looks at losses as something not to get too worked up over, bad things happen, no big deal. And the idea of jumping to “Oh No, Disaster” at every problem, or automatically blaming people (including myself) when they unintentionally cause problems, or getting trapped thinking in circles around problems so I’m ten times as miserable and start to freak out about things that don’t matter in the big picture? It takes effort to think of how to do that, now. It’s not automatic; thinking “expensive thing broke so I should freak out about it” takes some suspension of disbelief.
And I’m glad of that, because my afternoon is going amazing, and that other hypothetical me, who can still think that way so easily, who thinks refraining from blame is weak, and looking for positives is hokey nonsense not worth learning to do? They’d be having a miserable time right now.
