Hmmm…
Looking at your fandoms, I can’t help but think some sort of Bingqiu in Spy X Family (or a SxF Xianxia fusion) could be super fun!
The question is… what would their roles be.
Assassin Luo Binghe, or spy Luo Binghe… and which of them gets gender swapped. 🤔
Oh!! Maybe Shen Yuan was meant to be an ally of the female half of the main duo, Liu Mingyan, but through shenanigans he somehow ends up with her role instead, and the System demands he fake marry Binghe anyway. 😂
This is exactly the kind of prompt i was hoping for! TY!!! 🙏
The way i see it Binghe would definitely be the assassin, Shen Yuan is too big of a softie not to mention one who so easily put on the mask of another man before so he would definitely be the spy.
But also being oblivious to feelings yet a capable badass, bad in the kitchen, feeling inadequate as a partner? All Shen Yuan. Binghe with his protagonist Halo meanwhile would fit better with Mr. All around perfect Husband. So i guess it'd be a little like Yor and Loyd had switched professions.
Shen Yuan's over protective brother in a position of power? I wonder who that would be? Enter Shen Jiu haha. Rather than secret police he'd be a detective looking in to all the murders rather than keeping state secrets from spies though. To keep that rivalry between him Binghe. The family member Binghe became an assassin to provide for? His mom. The gardener AKA the guy who hired him and hands him his missions? Meng Mo. Franky, the spy's funny informant and gadget supplier, occasional babysitter and not to mention bestfriend? Shang Qinghua.
I dont know if i should replace Fiona with Liu Quinge as Fiona's character really would fit Binghe better. But Liushen is a weakness of mine even if onesided and those two were just made for coworker romances. Maybe I should give Binge someone trying to woe him too? Sha hualing? Then if i dont go with your other idea of having SY transmigrate in to Liu Mingyan (which i am saving up in my head because i absolutely love the idea) then i can add something in the background with her and Sha hualing. I'm positive i could find a way to write in Mobei for SQH or i could go with Scumplane and have him end up Shen Jiu and actually yeah that would work, need to distract SJ long enough for Bingyuan to get it on afterall. Oh what about SQH x SJ x LQG? Or should Shen Yuan get a second husbandafterall? Alternatively imagine LQG crying over a bowl of icecream.
Next question is if SY didnt transmigrate into LMY then who is he? What about Ning Yingying? Who could be SJ's little sister in this world? Or he couldve just been put in there as a female version of himself. Or like it was with Shen quingiu a character who vaguely resembles him and has a similar name. She just happens to be a woman though. Or maybe go with the mulan aproach and have him crossdress? But then how does he explain to his brother that he's suddenly - he could say that he's in love with binghe and the only way to marry him was fake his papers to pretend to be a woman since queer marriage isnt yet allowed in their fictional country. Like no one cares if they date its just they havent gotten to the legalisation of marriage yet. And if SJ asks why they had to get married so suddenly anyway (cuz no way in hell is SY getting away with saying he forgot to tell him for a year) he could say that they had to so they could adopt their daughter. Who in this case scenario could be Ning Yingying, should she still have Anyas powers? damian could be Ming fan or the little palace girl or whatever (im not yet far enough in the books to now her and the old man that well so id have to check the wiki) and i could make the palace master donovan desmond and have SY and LBH team up to take him down in the end.
Anyways yeah these are just some ideas, and again thanks for the prompt! I can't wait to write this! Maybe i'll draw something for it later too. ❤️

So I just saw your tags on the Mo Xuanyu art I reblogged - please talk Mo Xuanyu headcanons to me!
(I saw fanart with him and Jgy the other day and I'm like actual Mo Xuanyu is not explored enough. I need more of him)
Thank you ♡
hello friend!!! sorry I’m getting to this after so many days have passed—obligatory work life etc commitments that left me drained and not ready to answer!
I’ll list my biggest headcanons—I’ll admit that I haven’t explored him as much as I’d like, but these are the things I take into every scenario regarding him!
1. Mo Xuanyu is trans!
There’s something a little bit tragic to me about the way gender is handled in Ye Olde Ancient Societies. As much as I love what The Untamed did as far as removing some of the perceived gender biases of MDZS (such as female cultivators being Kept Apart in Cloud Recesses and showing us maybe?? one? female sect leader?) I do love playing around with two types of characters—those I can shoot with my “trans laser beam,” and tragic ones.
My specific headcanon for Mo Xuanyu (which gets explained in wi3!) is that his mother was told if her child was a girl, she would not be acknowledged and Second Madam Mo would be cast aside. Knowing what that would mean not only for herself but for her child, she raised Mo Xuanyu as a boy, and it wasn’t discovered until much later by a certain Jin that the truth was revealed. For his part, Mo Xuanyu never felt like a girl, and never wanted to portray himself as one.
I think Mo Xuanyu being trans also adds a fun little layer of struggle to Wei Wuxian’s return—he went from a cis man to a trans man and suddenly has to deal with that dysphoria, too.
2. Mo Xuanyu is a little crazy, but not the way he’s described in the books.
This is another thing that comes up in wi3–Mo Xuanyu’s mental health vs. his intelligence!
While Mo Xuanyu never thought twice about being a boy, it sure doesn’t change the dysphoria of being told you’re something that your body doesn’t reflect! Not only that, but the poor treatment from the Mo family against him and his mother that I can’t believe didn’t happen in the ten years between when Jin Guangshan abandoned him and when he brought Mo Xuanyu to Carp Tower? During such formative years, it’s not a wonder to me that Mo Xuanyu’s not quite all there.
(I resonate a little with this headcanon. Okay, I resonate with this headcanon a lot, actually.)
But! I don’t think Mo Xuanyu’s unintelligent. The opposite, actually—I think he’s very intelligent, although not quite as smart and calculating as our boy Jin Guangyao. Because of the treatment at the hands of the Mo family, I don’t think Mo Xuanyu’s mother was healthy enough to have as much of a hand in Mo Xuanyu’s life as Meng Shi did with Jin Guangyao, but he was a young master of an affluential family who were under the belief that Jin Guangshan could, at any point, come back and claim Mo Xuanyu like he said he would. They would’ve given him at least some education, because it wouldn’t have reflected well on them had they not. And, given that they were an affluential family—they have a Manor and a Village, after all—they likely could’ve afforded much better learning materials than Meng Shi (who did her best!).
3. The Incest.
The allegations that Mo Xuanyu came into Jin Guangyao and whether or not they’re true are such an interesting thing to play around with in my brain.
I think this aspect for me will vary greatly depending on what I’m writing. They may be true in one fic, or completely fabricated in another. Or maybe they’re only slightly true! As mentioned previously, Mo Xuanyu isn’t quite in full control of his cognitive thought processes. I’m not sure if I read it as a headcanon or part of canon or one of mxtx’s interviews or even a different fanfic or the wiki, but I read somewhere that Jin Guangyao was actually quite kind to his half brother, despite the pointed way with which Jin Guangshan brought him around as a way to bully Jin Guangyao. I think that would have a very lasting effect on Mo Xuanyu, who likely only saw kindness from his mother by that point in his life.
Whether or not Jin Guangyao takes advantage of it… 🤷‍♂️ again, varies on the fic I’m writing, I think!
These are my big three at the moment. I’d love to hear any that you or anyone else might have! I really want to write a modern fic and it’d be fun to have Mo Xuanyu in there being the annoying younger brother to Jin Zixuan and Meng Yao* he deserved to be.

ATLA Gender Bender: "Himekawa" and "Kayuu"
As I mentioned previously, the concept behind "ATLA Gender Bender" is to swap the genders of the main cast, and to only swap the genders of adult characters when it enhances the story. Unlike Ursa and Ozai, I don't think the story is enhanced by swapping the genders of Hakoda and Kya. Due to her untimely death, little is known about Kya's personality and history. In the TV series, Hakoda is a pretty simple character, though he is given more focus in the comics. In ATLA, the Water Tribe is arguably the lowest of the four nations in terms of gender equality index. If Hakoda was a woman and Kya was a man, it is likely that Hakoda would have been inside the home when the Southern Raiders invaded. Instead of Kya, female Hakoda would have suffered a noble death at the hands of Yon Rha. Since the position of "chief" is elected in the Southern Water Tribe, male Kya could have become the chief in Hakoda's stead. This seems to be a realistic scenario if the genders of Hakoda and Kya were reversed, but it does not interest me that much. For these reasons, I would rather leave Hakoda and Kya's genders unchanged.
Still, I wanted to try a rough sketch of male Kya and female Hakoda, just for fun. In Hakoda's case, I think it would be interesting if female Hakoda was a rare example of a female chieftain. In designing her, I was inspired by the description of a "powerful woman chief" of the subarctic Kaska (see: books.google.com/books?id=iBIS…). I was unable to find a physical description of this woman chief, so I also referred to information about the Greenlandic Inuit. This culture was selected due to its similarities to Southern Water Tribe culture with respect to gender. Both cultures display a clear division of labor between men and women, yet transgender persons could be found in both cultures (see: avatar.fandom.com/wiki/Souther…). Indigenous Arctic cultures also had a degree of flexibility in the gender role of women, who would be taught to hunt and perform masculine activities to ensure the survival of the community. This seems to also be the case for the Southern Water Tribe, given the non-bender warrior woman "Lirin" and Katara's reaction to the more rigid gender roles of the Northern Water Tribe. I gave female Hakoda a masculine, but not totally masculine, style to match the description of female huntresses of the Greenlandic Inuit. These huntresses were not restricted to the typical gender roles of Inuit women, as they were trained to hunt by their fathers. They are described as girls who "behaved and dressed like men", and it might be appropriate to describe them as "transgender" (see: monoskop.org/images/3/34/Mead_…). However, here I did not intend for female Hakoda to be transgender, but to be like the female chiefs "Running Eagle" and Bíawacheeitchish (see: "Men as women, women as men : changing gender in Native American cultures" by Sabine Lang). Her appearance is also a little inspired by the woman chief shown in the Great Divide. Her hair is meant to suggest that at some point in her past, she wore "hair loopies". Her hairstyle is also inspired by the adjacent culture of Kyoshi Island, where woman warriors like Suki cut their hair short and tie it in a wolf's tail.
With Hakoda reimagined as a female chief, I think her relationship to "Sanaaq" might be similar to that of Toph's relationship to Lin. "Sanaaq" would be an aspiring female warrior who endeavors to live up to her warrior mother's legacy.
Hakoda's name is actually Japanese in origin, where he is named after the Hakkoda Mountains. As such, a potential name for his female counterpart could be "Himekawa", the name of a Japanese river.
Since the men of the Southern Water Tribe were all trained as warriors, male Kya wears a warrior's wolf tail like the other men of the tribe. Would he be an impressive warrior or an unimpressive warrior? I'm not sure. Either way, the idea is that he is still the one found in the home, who sacrifices himself when the Southern Raiders invade. In real life, Inuit clothing was styled differently for men and women, where men's reached to the middle of the thigh, while women's reached below the knees (see: books.google.com/books?id=dQcW…). This generally seems to be the case for Southern Water Tribe men and women. However, the comics "North and South" show Thod and Gilak wearing clothes that extend past the knee (see: avatar.fandom.com/wiki/Thod?fi…). This is why I chose to also give male Kya clothing that extends past his knee. It is also supposed to be something that he might wear while inside the home, rather than fighting a battle. I think a good name for him would be "Kayuu", an Aleut name meaning "his strength" (see page 66 of "Ancient Aleut Personal Names": library.alaska.gov/hist/hist_d…)

If the Dragon Ball wiki isn't going to give me any Puar trivia, then *cracks knuckles* it's Excessively Long Headcanon Time
Tumblr media
First, between watching 3 different dubs of 3 different parts of the franchise recently that all referred to Puar as she/her (in Japanese apparently Puar has a female actor but uses a typically masculine "I" pronoun and is addressed with a typically masculine honorific—and has been declared male by Toriyama in an interview—so I dunno if the English translators just assumed gender based on voice or if Puar so rarely speaks about themself / is so rarely directly spoken to that the pronouns and honorific only came up after the translator had already declared them female)...I've been like "Puar as a boy is cute...but Puar as a girl is ALSO cute..." so I'm headcanoning them on the nonbinary spectrum to have the best of both worlds XD [I mean this affectionately and not transphobically, so please let me know if I should rephrase this]
Since all we get of Puar's backstory besides Transformation Kindergarten is "Puar hatched from an egg," headcanon that they grew up in the wild somewhere, separated from their birth parents and constantly fearing for their life because of all the local predators. One day Puar was rescued from danger by a former student of the Transformation Kindergarten who took a liking to Puar and decided to bring them there, so they could at least defend themself by shapeshifting into scary forms to frighten their enemies or into bug forms too tiny to be caught.
There, though, Puar was mercilessly bullied by Oolong, who made everyone's life hell until he was finally kicked out (his parents had sent him there thinking that "Transformation Kindergarten" was a finishing school that would fix his bad behavior). This treatment only increased Puar's resolve to master transformation and have a way to defend themself, and they graduated at the top of their class. They were tempted to live quietly in peace at the school and become an instructor, but wanted revenge against Oolong and went out into the world to find him (correctly assuming that Oolong would still be up to no good) and Bring Him To Justice.
Unfortunately, the world outside the secluded school was still dangerous and Puar's shapeshifting abilities weren't as helpful as they'd been promised. Pretty soon after leaving, they were captured by some anthro animal gangsters who for several weeks forced Puar at gunpoint to use their ability for the gangsters' benefit. Yamcha, who only saw a bunch of big guys kicking around a tiny sorta-cat child, swooped in and came to the rescue with a dashing grin and hair blowing dramatically in the wind, and for Puar it was love at first sight. They swore undying allegiance to Yamcha, who was initially like "Uh...that's a bit much," but agreed to take Puar in after realizing how useful Puar's shapeshifting would be for banditry. (Puar, to his dying day, will never realize the irony of being forced to shapeshift to commit crimes only to be rescued and then excitedly volunteer to shapeshift to commit crimes.)
When they go off to live at Capsule Corp, Puar has a strong affection for Bulma's parents and considers them parent-like (also having parental feelings for the teachers at Transformation Kindergarten), but has latched onto Yamcha so hard that they've mentally adopted Yamcha's (long-dead) parents as their own, and fantasizes so hard about what it would've been like to grow up with Yamcha that sometimes they'll mention a daydream memory in conversation and Yamcha's like "??? I didn't meet you 'til I was 14??" and Puar has to hastily come up with an excuse for what they said.
Again, Puar's been madly in love with Yamcha since the moment they met, but they're asexual and thought romantic love = desire for sex so they didn't understand that it was love until many years later when they not only learned about asexuality, but finally connected the concept to their own experience and specific feelings for Yamcha. (In the meantime, they'd been aggressively pushing for Yamcha and Bulma to get together and stay together, with the idea that that was what would make Yamcha happy and Puar would do ANYTHING to make Yamcha happy.) But the realization just made things worse because then they had to deal with the thoughts that Yamcha only ever dated human women and therefore probably wouldn't see Puar romantically and even if he did he'd probably want to Do Stuff that Puar might not be comfortable with and angst angst angst angst aaaangst. They couldn't talk to Bulma about it cus they didn't want to get between her and Yamcha, and was terrified of talking to Oolong about it since Oolong would surely make fun of them or tell Yamcha out of spite (Oolong having spent the previous years nonstop teasing Puar about having a crush on Yamcha, which was easier to take when Puar sincerely thought it wasn't true).
Eventually they do confide in Oolong, and Oolong DOES make fun of them at first ("You're in love with Yamcha? This is supposed to be NEWS??") and absolutely cannot comprehend the concept of asexuality, but backs off when it's clear that Puar is genuinely upset, partly cus Oolong also understands how hard it is to be obsessively in love with a human who's only attracted to other humanoids (Bulma). He still teases Puar sometimes, but also takes any opportunity to try to wingman Yamcha into dating Puar, to Puar's horror. (Fortunately Yamcha never picks up on the subtext and is just like "Well yeah, sure I'll take Puar to the movie if they want to go? I mean of course Puar's gonna come live with me, they're my little buddy?")
After recovering from the world-ending trauma of the Buu Saga, Puar finally confesses to Yamcha in an extremely shoujo "It's okay if you don't like me back, but I want you to know" way, and Yamcha's surprised and says "I don't like you that way" but is extremely cool with it, Puar is massively relieved, and they continue on as even closer friends.
ALSO: headcanon that the hardest part of learning to shapeshift is the actual act of shapeshifting, of imagining what you want to be in 3D and willing your molecules into that shape. The part that Oolong missed when he was kicked out of school was the ability to increase your endurance and improve your concentration, which is about increasing your body's stamina through exercise (since it's physically taxing to rearrange yourself into and maintain a foreign shape) and controlling your mental state through meditation (so you can calmly and easily maintain the form in the back of your mind while consciously focusing on other things, instead of having to concentrate hard on staying in your chosen shape). Oolong doesn't know about this, just that Puar can maintain a form longer and transform more times in a row than he can. He tried going back to school but had been blacklisted for life, and Puar refused to teach him, knowing he would probably use it for evil (at minimum, to get dates with girls who aren't into pigs).

There's this person close to me that keeps doing something that, not only is just straight up quite rude about a certain topic, but it's more ignorant.
Bro can tell me about characters they love like some dudes from some type of dating sim with sensitive topics or portal 2 and I still remember certain elements about the said character they talked about
But if when I talk about Arashi Narukami, a Transgender character, to which I always refer with words (female, women, queen) and pronouns (she/her/herself), bro can't remember shit or even her gender??
Recently on the Engstars HappyEle translated idk what story where Tetora referred to Naru as "him" and I had this silly idea to email the company and just throw insults (HAPPYELE YOU HAD ONE JOB.) and wrote a wall of things I'd say to them in my native language.
I went to rant to this friend about it by asking "how can I send an anonymous email?" And then send the wall of what I would say. I also said that the whole fandom is enraged about it (maybe not whole since there's still some people who refer to Arashi as a man sleep with one eye open bi-) and they asked me something like "do you not see how overblown this is? Everyone in the fandom mad cuz the company that made the character called them a he/him?" YES. AND THEY ASKED "Is his gender fanon?" And quickly edited to "their" asap.
I felt rage and had to hold it to try to explain to them that it is canon. LIKE I TELL YOU "BCS SHE IS A TRANS WOMAN" AND YET YOU ASK "fanon or canon?" UGYCYCVVUYCYCVYYVVYJHCXYH
Not to mention I sent them screenshots of someone on Arashi's wiki explaining her gender over the years in ! Era and !! Era and why refering to trans women as they/them sometimes is wrong.
Not that it's just straight up rude since I've TOLD you lots of times when I talked about Arashi, but you're just straight up fcking ignorant. Sure, I don't care about your characters or your interests that much, but at least I remember things about the characters you always yap about. Do better.

I was going to make a post about this on Instagram, but I realized I literally started using Tumblr so I can infodump without a character limit but I don't think I have... So, I should post it here!... So I can be detailed without running out of space and having to delete paragraphs and paraphrase (I have to do that so much on Instagram 😞)...
Okay, so, one of my big headcanons from FNAF Security Breach is that Roxy is Transfem... That she's actually Trans Foxy... I actually stole this headcanon from Bug lol...
I was thinking about it a bit ago, and realized it genuinely makes sense?... Like, we headcanon that she's Trans Foxy since Foxy is pretty much completely absent from the game (as far as we're aware)... There's no direct mention of him, just a few art pieces depicting him + his area next to Monty's Golf that seems maybe abandoned?... I haven't played the game in a bit, but I'm pretty sure it's fairly empty?... Or, at least, it felt pretty empty to me... And why would they (as in, Fazbear Entertainment) just get rid of a beloved character?... Maybe Foxy is just out of order and is in some inaccessible room, that's definitely the actual likely reason...
But who says headcanons have to be likely?!... Our headcanon is that Foxy is Trans and couldn't deal with the dysphoria anymore, so she told an employee or manager or whoever... She honestly probably just expected them to scrap her endoskeleton and replace her... Why would they bother actually allowing her to transition, that would cost a lot of money to feminize her casing... But the company is greedy and realized that pirates and foxes aren't as popular with kids anymore (are they actually?... Idk)... So they took the opportunity to create a (female, for Foxy) wolf character (are wolves more popular than foxes fr?... Idk, they're Bug's favourite animal though so they do feel more popular lol...), who's into racing (also unsure if racing is more popular than pirates, probably not?... But in this headcanon scenario they are... The world of Security Breach is different from ours, bears are literally extinct, I can headcanon whatever I want about it lol)... She now gets to go by Roxanne, be gender as fuck, and gets to be way cooler!... Though, she still struggles with self esteem issues and also has NPD (That one is a headcanon I came up with without Bug, I'm projecting so hard onto this wolf fr)...
Got a little carried away with my explanation, but that's what this Tumblr is for!... Anyway, that's not why I realized it makes sense... Well, that's our general justification for it, but earlier I realized something else... None of the Foxy's seem Cis... Honestly, that could be another reason why Fazbear Entertainment caved and just let her be Trans... No matter how hard they've tried in the past, no matter the design change or changing endoskeletons, the Foxys can't be Cis...
Mangle is the obvious example, Scott has been switching between he and she pronouns with her throughout most of the games and literally said his gender is "yes"... But she's not the only one... Funtime Foxy is one we've also headcanoned as Bigender for a while... Not just because he's feminine, but because she's referred to with she/her pronouns by handunit... Also, in UCN he's exclusively referred to with he/him pronouns, BUT she's also in the Ladies Night 3 challenge... Also Lolbit is kind of obvious too since they're literally just a virus and also they're the Nonbinary flag colors (basically)...
Those 3 are the obvious ones, the others are more.. purely headcanon lol... Nightmare Foxy is literally in the closet... Yes, that's my entire reasoning for him being not Cis... FNAF 1 Foxy is mostly hidden too, in his own sort of closet (ik it's a stage, I mean in a metaphorical way)... Also I'm not acknowledging the fact that he's possessed (or any of the other Foxy's) because I do not care and am only referring to the animatronics themselves... I believe (according to info on the fandom wiki...) FNAF 1 Foxy is out of order because his endoskeleton is glitchy and twitchy... Maybe because he's experiencing dysphoria 🤔 (ik this is a reach, all of this is a reach, LET ME HAVE FUN /lh)... Uh, is Withered Foxy a different Foxy?... I really need to learn the lore of these games lmao... Uh, he's Trans because they're all Trans... Idk if I'm forgetting any Foxys... All of the Foxys are either Nonbinary or Transfem (or both)...
Im kind of losing steam for this post, the tiredness is kicking in lol... Uh, yeah, the point is that it makes sense that they let Roxy just be Trans, since they realized Foxy is always Trans and they can't stop it... So they just fully embraced her finally...
Don't comment on this with any lore debunking anything, I genuinely couldn't care less, let us have our Trans headcanons for a bunch of nonexistent animatronics in a game series lol... Also, if Foxy does end up being in the DLC, it will debunk very little to us... We've already decided that if that happens, we'll just headcanon they gave that Trans endoskeleton her own casing (Roxy) and then just shoved a new endoskeleton in Foxy so they didn't have to actually lose the character... And that Foxy will also be Trans to us... There is no escaping the Foxy Trans headcanons lmao...
If anyone has read all of this, why? /lh... I mean, thanks?... Idk, lol... I appreciate being able to make a really long, silly post like this about a headcanon I love, that maybe someone will read (I doubt it though /lh)... If you agree with us, cool!... If you'd like, our dms are open for discussion about other Queer headcanons (even if we don't know the media, you can infodump to us and we'll enjoy learning about your blorbos and why you believe they're queer)... Our dms are also open for basically anything else, we barely socialize and wouldn't mind having others to talk to lol...
This post is too long for me to want to proofread (also I'm tired), if there are spelling or grammar mistakes, sorry... If there aren't, I'm just that perfect I guess /hj... 🌌

Hai could you expand on your Justine trans agenda because i didnt really get that vibe myself but would like to understand
First of all Grandfather Paradox. Second of all the reaction to D’eon feels less big standard transphobia and more “I am so deeply in the closet and you are making me question things about myself I don’t want to question about myself so I am going to hate on you, also stop hitting on their woman I am 100% not in love with we are just two normal heterosexual cisgenders girls being good friends.” Whilst I get trans vibes I feel their is more evidence for Justine being not heterosexual. Of course one could argue that Justine is is Retro trans. In that when a child they where not trans but after becoming the grandfather they always where trans. Much like how they would not have joined the Faction Paradox if they did not become the Grandfather paradox and have Shuncucker yell at them whilst in cryo sleep in Shada. But either way I just get string closeted Trans Vibes from them (not sure which gender I assumed some kind of gender fluid or flux or perhaps bi or multi gender?
Like I said Justine not being heterosexual is easy to argue, namely them constantly going on about how beautiful Shuncker is and them be fill considering becoming Eve and Eve. Not to mention Eliza death scene, and the Jealousy that Justine has for D’eon(which could tie in to the gender thing) regarding Eliza.
Of course Eliza who is presumably Female also has a funky relationship with Gender I would not call it Trans but I would call Horus Trans but not Eliza. Eliza is so textually not heterosexual that even TARDIS wiki admits she is non-heterosexual. The Eve and Eve line the marrying a woman the fact D’eon is basically like you are to good for Justine you don’t need her and Eliza is like but how can I say no to her.
Look most of it is on vibes but their is some evidence. I am not very good at explaining things like this but I hope I explained it well.

I think I’d like to note a few more things on Maria’s clothing as well.
She does dress masculine, but it’s not very out of the ordinary. Gratia, Henriette, Eileen, and Yurie all wear traditionally masculine clothes as warriors, and even compared to them, Maria did not appear to be one to entirely bury her feminine traits. She wears her lumenflower brooch, flower chains, a ribbon in her hair, and a feathered hat that resembles the female Cainhurst knight hat alongside a more common hunter’s hat. Compared to the other masculine women of Bloodborne, Maria still has a clear balance between her masculine and feminine attire.
The male Cainhurst knight set is actually traditionally way more feminine-looking already, but Maria turning it into a hunter’s uniform inspired by Gehrman works well because the set already bears more resemblance to traditional hunter wear than the female knight’s garb.
Again, even in the wider world of Soulsborne, Maria is not unusual for being masc in an older time period. What is more relevant is her unique way of approaching a traditionally male dominated field in a Victorian setting, and not burying her feminine traits. Every other female hunter I mentioned dresses entirely masculine, but Maria keeps a balance. She could have given her more elegant Cainhurst fashion, which is undeniably more feminine, but she didn’t. This makes more come off like more of a feminist in her time than the other women that clearly didn’t do the same.
Gehrman dressing the Doll like he did was an interesting choice, but something tells me he didn’t do it out of a malevolent or disturbing reason. We know the Doll clothes reveal the love of their creator, not the desire for female submission or sexual depravity. The answer doesn’t need to be complex when trying to explain why Gehrman’s motives might not have been twisted. The answer is right in the game. It was something that came from love. Why it manifested in that way is up to interpretation.
Oh! I appreciate you expressing your take on the matter here, anon! I just want to correct a little bit! The ribbon Maria ties her hair with appear to be the headpiece of Knight's set that is male version of it, and Henryk is another hunter that uses feathers in his hat!
As for Yurie/Julie, Choir garb in my opinion is not masculine clothing but rather... neutral clothing? It is a robe of a religious group and in my opinion they'd aim for suppression if not erasure of identity! Blindfold cap covers upper part of their faces and whereas it has lore reason (letting the 'stars' show them the world guide them instead + Willem reference), but also from design standpoint it covers the most expressive part of the face - the eyes area. They are also called Choir, I think they would try to appear all identical and interchangeable, anonymous, including obscuring gender presentation rather than being feminine or masculine! (I like to think realistically, anyone with long hair would tuck them under the hat... 🤔) So yeah! I just need to be honest with what we are discussing here.
But you have a rather good core point:
Tumblr media
(Screenshots are courtesy of Bloodborne wiki ( x ))
You can see male Knight, Maria and female Knight sets, and... that sets are actually similar. The 'masculine' thing about Maria's version of the set is use of grey ribbon to tie her hair, leaving out puffy sleeves and leaving out the skirt. Which... tells us actually not all that much about her presentation?
No, but really! I would say there is a difference between disposing of flea-like blood-drunk monsters in the comfort of the royal castle and running in dungeons/streets/hamlet full of fish mutants apparently. There might have been a practical reason for leaving the skirt (and slightly longer cape) out. Knights stay in the castle mostly to dispose of Bloodlickers that just jump and suck blood, Maria however, disposes of beasts that could effectively drag a long skirt/longer cape down with their claws! Puffy sleeves of female set are made from lighter and expensive material, but Maria's coat is (reasonably) of thicker and rougher material that might be a hassle to repeat the puffiness even if Maria wanted to! And ribbon could be just an element common in Cainhurst to tie hair, definitely not likely to be banned for women. Maria needed a big hat, not a tiny decorative hat when hunting. Again, 'comfort of the castle' thing, you know?
Clothes are not necessarily masculine, but they ARE practical.
Tumblr media
Basically? You are right, there is no need for big essays and elaborate analyses to begin with. Maria is not 'unambiguously masculine', Maria is... Maria. She presents as Maria. Given the setting her preferences are... sooooo up to interpretation, and the only solid thing we have is that Gehrman certainly had no personal interest in feminizing her. (Woulda been odd anyways since he trained her to kick ass to begin with).
We appear to have entered the problem of 'western fandoms can only analyze any media through the lense of 21th century american values regardless of context, setting, country of the production or even basic common sense'. Woman seems masculine? Then she MUST be masculine for the same reasons why an american woman would be in 21st century would be masculine, by logic of such people. It is just something I absolutely cannot connect with, because I engage with fiction to escape the struggles and visions of reality, not to carry them with me. And I love media from overseas, coming from different cultures or set in a very different setting because it gives me perspective varied from what I already see all the time. Hence why I personally never had much hype for passing her as butch/egg/etc, or for projecting issues with creepy men on Gehrman. Because:
Tumblr media
There are plenty of fictional universes that do touch themes of feminism and queer presentation as it is in many 1st world countries of our century, are made by westerners and for (mostly) westerners, there are many indie creators or just artists that have many characters like this and explore these themes - in plain way, without having to force it in! Bloodborne just feels like a whole different thing that is good for what it is, not for what it could be.
I also always had impression that when FromSoft games want to say something regarding characterisation - they SAY it. I think Elden Ring cemented this for me with the "Dolores fashioned herself as a man" or... idk, Entire Personality of Seluvis. They are very coy with lore and world-building and timelines, indeed, but not with presenting something. Does it mean that interpretations are now bad and banned? Of course not. But it is mindset like 'Maria is masculine she is the gnc icon everyone who thinks otherwise is just a cowardly incel whose pp shrinks at the sight of a masculine woman why do you want to take away our ONLY representation under guise of loving the lore and truth?!' that does inspire me to go in the trenches to defend Gehrman's honor dfsjhdfsdsf
Meanwhile Gratia and Henriett leave the chat:
Tumblr media
I've talked a lot but I see what you are saying, anon. It is more about 'people who have eyes WILL see naturally, without any essays or analyses' and like... I guess so...? I just have it basically coded in my brain to ramble about my interests and read lectures to the classroom with like 2 people in it, hahaha. Maybe there should be fandomry class in the schools since we can't escape the internet and media anymore, and I will work as a teacher. xD /j

nina what are your thoughts on jeong jeong and the fire healing in lok? inquiring minds 🎤🎤🎤
this post by @twilight-skies outlines a version i like a lot - it makes sense that the sun warriors would be the ones keeping that tradition alive, and i do think that iroh or zuko or aang would be really insistent on jeong jeong going to see them. (i think it'd be sweet if it was aang, like that episode is all about aang healing from the trauma jeong jeong passed onto him and maybe he'd think jeong jeong should get that healing too.)
getting there, jeong jeong is less impressed by the visions of ~true firebending~ than by seeing (what i presume is) a culture that uses firebending primarily in non-violent ways. this includes healing, and jeong jeong is immediately interested in learning but also extremely hesitant about using firebending again, especially in such a high-stakes way. what if someone who's hurt just gets more hurt?
i haven't been using pronouns for jeong jeong so far here, because i think that like water-healing, fire-healing is considered feminine. jeong jeong's fire-healing teacher is a kind old woman who clocks that jeong jeong's desire to learn is also partially about femininity. jeong jeong spends some time as the "token guy" in the healing classes, even making some friends once everyone gets over their (understandable) mistrust of the outsider. eventually, finding this community of women helps her come out.
(i suppose it wouldn't be great if the sun warriors, in all their wisdom, didn't have gender equality, but jeong jeong really needs friends, and specifically female friends.)
with a new gender and a new passion, jeong jeong definitely softens up a bit, but i think fire healer jeong jeong still retains a bit of that grumpy asshole energy. she's very adamant about her patients following her instructions and she won't sugarcoat anything. and when she becomes a teacher, revitalizing the tradition in the fire nation proper, she still very much expects her students to have respect for the power of fire and a level of self-discipline. but she is a much nicer teacher than she was, more patient and more hands-on. she and piandao have this in common - they expect a lot of their students, but it's because they believe in you.
twilight-skies's post mentioned azula learning as well and i definitely think that could be interesting. it's pretty easy to see how jeong jeong parallels zuko, as aang's scarred angsty firebending teacher, but the wiki says young jeong jeong was a prodigy, and she was an admiral when she left. that seems very azula - someone in a privileged position under a lot of pressure to be a perfect firebender and soldier, who eventually couldn't take it anymore. jeong jeong could be a good post-canon mentor for her - fire-healing or not - because she knows what it's like to be the golden child. (iroh does too, but family might be a bit too complicated for azula to deal with right away.)
in fact, i have a wip where jeong jeong, having gotten her shit together and transitioned sometime between her episode and sozin's comet, volunteers to take on the care of azula post-canon. it's kinda like my sokka&piandao wip. young person staying at piandao's place struggles to figure out what to do with themselves post-war while old man* yaoi is happening in the background.
*jeong jeong is not a man, but her relationship with piandao started when they were young men in the military dealing with homophobia so it's definitely not a straight relationship. also she transitioned pretty late in life but knew pretty early on that she was attracted to men so she's been thinking of herself as a gay man for a while and isn't gonna let that go so easily. queer people have complicated and conflicting identities!
anyways. long story short transitioning and becoming a fire-healer is my ideal post-canon path for jeong jeong. i'd still think that even if lok hadn't canonized fire-healing because i just think it should exist. but it's nice to have the confirmation, and to imagine it was jeong jeong who brought it back

Just what is it with wiki editors and trans characters?
It’s still June, which means it’s still pride month, which means I’m still updating this blog more often than the usual maybe 3 times a year, and today I’d like to talk to you about some fictional characters who are trans and the weird wiki entries bending over backwards to deny it. And I’m not even playing this game on hard mode here, talking about like the cast of FF6 or something. I’m here to talk about a gal from Final Fight, and a guy from One Piece.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh and I guess I’m also talking about Poison. You all know Poison right? She’s pretty commonly referred to as the first trans woman in a video game, specifically Final Fight in 1989. And that little fun fact is... not an actual fact.
Prior to Final Fight, we had Ms. Pac-Man in 1982. While I hesitate to deadname even fictional characters, Ms. Pac-Man began life as Crazy Otto, and had a brief stint going by Super Pac-Man and a couple other monikers before going with just Ms. Pac-Man. I don’t see why she shouldn’t count.
Perhaps you think we shouldn’t count Ms. Pac-Man because to your reasoning, the origins of the game and the character re-design process behind don’t qualify as transitioning? OK then, the next example that comes immediately to mind is Luigi, from Super Mario Bros., in 1993. Who has had a remarkably consistent portrayal as being very very into feminine clothes, acting super girly while wearing them, and quite enjoying this. Doesn’t count because it’s all in supplementary material? No, it’s in multiple games too. Want to argue there was no in-game confirmation prior to the release of Final Fight? That’s really splitting hairs now, particularly when tie-in media got onboard this train quite early on. Perhaps you want to make the argument that Luigi is not trans, but is a cis man who likes to crossdress, perhaps as a sexual fetish? That is a weird argument to make about a character from a series of games aimed at young children but you do you.
How about Metroid, 1986? Samus canonically dresses like a man, uses masculine pronouns, and when that armor comes off we reveal a woman in a low cut leotard ready to start living it up. Who’s also canonically two meters tall, has super broad shoulders, had her biochemistry tweaked as a child... I think I wrote a whole separate post on this once. We still gonna play the “oh that’s all a disguise/misunderstanding” card on that one?
Well, Doki Doki Panic came out in 1987. Birdo (Catherine in Japan) is quite explicitly a trans woman. It’s right there in the manual, and ad campaigns, and really tastelessly referenced in many sources since. What possible justification could anyone use to argue she isn’t trans?
Well, let’s ask Wikipedia.
Tumblr media
“ Since the character's North American introduction, Birdo's gender identity has been an issue of discussion and speculation. The Japanese manual for Doki Doki Panic, when translated into English, states her name to be Catherine and as a man who thinks of himself as female, adding that she likes to wear a bow and would rather be called "Cathy."  However, in the first edition manual for the North American release of Super Mario Bros. 2, Birdo is referred to by a text block that states "he thinks he is a girl" and would "rather be called 'Birdetta.'" In later printings, mention of Birdo being male was omitted. Mention of this fact is further not included in most later games featuring the character and seems to have been retconned to Birdo always being a female to begin with. In the Japanese version of Super Smash Bros. Melee, Birdo, called Catherine, is described similarly to the original manual, though wanting to be called "Cathy." In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, it is said that Birdo is of "indeterminate gender." Birdo appears in the Wii Japan-only video game Captain Rainbow, which delves into Birdo's gender identity. It specifically depicts her being imprisoned for entering the women's bathroom, and the player is asked to locate proof of her femininity (her vibrator) to get her out. Birdo is often lauded as the first transgender video game character. The character was given a female voice actor in Super Mario Advance, a remake of Super Mario Bros. 2. The Spanish language website for Mario Smash Football while describing Birdo suggests that the character's gender is indeterminate. The European website for Mario Strikers Charged Football refers to Birdo as a male character.”
And later in the same article, we have this whole subsection:
Tumblr media
“Gender identity
Birdo has been the subject of discussion relating to her gender identity and has been regarded as transgender. She has become a trans icon due to her gender identity. She has been credited as an early transgender character in video games. The manual excerpt from Super Mario Bros. 2 about Birdo's gender did not receive attention until some time after the game's release. Writer Lorenzo Fantoni suggested that this was because few people read the manual or because no one cared about Birdo's gender at the time. Fantoni also compared the Captain Rainbow scene to the later bathroom debates regarding trans people. Fantoni also suggests that Nintendo does not know what to do with Birdo and that changes to Birdo's character are made to match present-day morals. Author Sam Greer was critical of Birdo's portrayal, stating that her gender had become a "running joke" and was the "subject of much derision and stereotyping." Paste Magazine's Jennifer Unkle criticized Birdo as a caricatured trans person and as an example of Nintendo's poor handling of gender identity in general.
It is speculated by Wired's Chris Kohler that the gender issue was retconned to make her a cisgender female, while video game developer Jennifer Diane Reitz suggests that she may have undergone gender reassignment surgery. Writer Andrew Webster of The Escapist used the history of Birdo in the lead-in to his article, commenting on the changes Nintendo has made to hide Birdo's gender status.”
Weird efforts by wiki editors to try and establish some sort of “ambiguity” or “controversy” here highlighted in bold. Really though, ALL of this text can quite easily be boiled down to just “it used to be that every single mention of this character in any source of any kind felt compelled to include a gross transphobia-informed vulgar 'joke’ about her being trans, but more recently, in North American localizations, they don’t do that as often.”
I wasn’t planning to focus so heavily on Birdo, but wow what a fantastic example of the thinking at play here. Nobody’s trans unless you’re explicit about it. And by explicit about it we mean making gross jokes... and even then the character is only assumed to be trans when we hear that joke, if you go too long without making any, they revert to being cis.
Anyway I’m sure there’s plenty of other examples with other weird excuses not to count them that I’m forgetting. Was Faria out before Final Fight? It’s hard to pin old arcade releases down to a particular month.
How about Final Fight though? Poison isn’t even the first trans character in the game she appears in. Roxy pops in at the tail end of the first level, then again just before Poison, her palette swap. Believe it or not though, there are absolutely people out there who will insist that Poison is trans but Roxy isn’t. I have a lot of building up to do here but have a little tease from the dedicated Street Fighter wiki to get us going...
Tumblr media
Before getting into why “it has been speculated” that Roxy is trans, let’s head over to regular wikipedia and see what they have to say about Poison’s “gender history” shall we?
Tumblr media
“Originally conceived as a female thug in Final Fight and part of the game's antagonist group, Mad Gear, concerns during the game's development about reactions from North American audiences to fighting women led to the character being re-imagined as a "newhalf". However, that was not considered satisfactory and both Poison and her palette swap Roxy were replaced by the male characters "Billy" and "Sid" and have been for every subsequent North American port of the title on Nintendo consoles and handhelds. After the Final Fight series, she later appeared alongside wrestler Hugo, acting as his manager, with her schemes revolving around finding a tag team partner for him or developing their own wrestling organization. Poison first appeared as a playable character in Final Fight Revenge. She was also to appear in both Capcom Fighting All-Stars and Final Fight: Streetwise; however, the former was canceled and she was omitted from the latter as development progressed. Following those aborted attempts, she ended up appearing as a playable character on Street Fighter X Tekken. She was also added as a playable character to Ultra Street Fighter IV.
The character's potential status as a trans woman, consciously left ambiguous by the developers, has remained a topic of frequent debate by both fans and media alike.”
OK we’re going to be here a while, this is just the first section. Before even getting into the point I was going to make it’s super weird not to mention that she’s a playable character in Street Fighter V, how long ago was this last edited? Anyway, right off the bat, we have perhaps the most oft-repeated lie in video games. Which is even called out as such in the next section here... while repeating it again.
Tumblr media
“Conception and history
Poison's first appearance in Final Fight featured her and a palette swap character named Roxy as recurring minor enemies for the player to fight. Named after the band by an unnamed female employee at Capcom, she was designed by Akira Yasuda to contrast against the bigger characters in the game and move about randomly and described as a "cool and rebellious woman". According to the book All About Capcom Head to Head Fighting Games and Final Fight director Akira Nishitani, the characters were originally planned to be cisgender women, but were changed to "newhalfs" (a Japanese slang term for trans women) after the game's release, due to the suggestion that "hitting women was considered rude" in America and the concern that feminist groups would sue. However, concept artwork included in the 2005 compilation Capcom Classics Collection of the pair specifically uses the kana for 'newhalf' (ニューハーフ), contradicting the statement the change occurred post-release. In 2007 Nishitani stated that he supposed the character "could be male", but added it was up to the viewer to decide. He later clarified in a discussion on Twitter that in his personal view Poison was a woman. Yasuda himself commented that as far as her gender, he considers her transgender in North American localizations, but cis in Japan.
A later appearance by Poison as a playable character in Final Fight Revenge, an American-produced 3D fighting game spinoff of Final Fight, portrayed the character in a highly feminine manner and had her romantically interested in Final Fight hero Cody. Commentary about her ending in the game in All About Capcom suggested that the character may have received sex reassignment surgery. The Final Fight-related character profiles featured in Capcom Classics Collection instead allude to her being a cross-dresser, while addressing Roxy as a "she" who dislikes Poison's cross-dressing.
Street Fighter IV's producer Yoshinori Ono, when asked in an interview about Poison's gender, stated: "Let's set the record straight: In North America, Poison is officially a post-op transsexual woman. But in Japan, she simply tucks her business away to look female." He later emphasized it again when asked about what female characters could be included in the game Street Fighter IV, stating that it would be too confusing to include her due to the region-specific gender. However, in a 2011 interview with Electronic Gaming Monthly at the Tokyo Game Show, he stated that Capcom "doesn't have a stance technically", and while they wouldn't give an official answer, felt it was up to the viewer to decide. He added that his intent was to please all fans and that the mystery behind her gender was the core of the character. During the same interview, a Capcom representative further added that they worked closely with GLAAD, an organization concerned with the portrayal of LGBT people in media, to ensure "anything that might be offensive has been very tailored to not be" for Poison's portrayal in Street Fighter X Tekken.”
Where do I begin? Besides shouting a string of profanity and mashing my keyboard while I read all that. Well first of all, I’m fairly certain every woman who has ever worked at Capcom has, in fact, had a name. Also can we have a look at that Final Fight Revenge ending that allegedly hints at her getting bottom surgery?
Tumblr media
I don’t even want to diagram the thought process by which one would get from some stock tropey “I bet I could make him like me” to “clearly this alludes to her running off to get surgery performed after this.”
Anyway damn, I haven’t even gotten to the sections on “censorship” and “reception” here, but I don’t want to be here all night. So let’s just say there’s a bunch of quotes from various people about how she’s really hot, half of those add some “I hope that doesn’t make me gay” sort of comment, and we have a couple more rephrasings of the big lie. So... yeah let’s get into that properly.
So... game developers tend to be gross creeps who love dehumanizing jokes about women and queer people in general, “games journalism” has traditionally been the realm of clueless teens quoting each other in circles, paraphrasing press releases, and pasting anything that claims to be a translation of an interview with someone speaking Japanese, said interviews tend to involve flummoxed third party interpreters, and none of these people are particularly likely to know a single damn thing about trans people, let alone what various slurs and terms in languages they don’t speak really imply.
So, first off, there’s nothing at all “mysterious” or “left to the player’s imagination” about the Final Fight girls. They are a pair of trans women who when not busy being brawler enemies or getting folded into the Street Fighter franchise and rounded out are sex workers, specifically catering to the the plausible deniability crowd who can go “hey she totally looked like a hot cis girl when I picked her up” in regards to women they very much know are trans and haven’t had bottom surgery. It’s a pretty common fetish. There has never actually been any ambiguity or deviation on that. It’s spelled out plain as day right on their original designs. Which I have a scan of, right here!
Tumblr media
There it is, plain as day. If you can read katakana, and you’re up on your Japanese sex work slang, there’s no ambiguity here. Same term all these developers keep tossing out in interviews. It ends up getting translated in all sorts of awkward ways because an interpreter is going to have to try and clean it up and simplify it, especially back when most of these quotes were pulled (the one from Ono is a bit more explicitly worded) and I’m guessing all the bits of “well in America she’d be considered a woman” stem from our language regarding trans women being a bit better generally, and/or a further weird crack because, well, America is kind of the country all the other country’s trans women come to when they want bottom surgery. Very few people in the world perform it, and we have a shocking percentage plus the best reviewed ones. Now you know.
The whole story about “making them trans in the U.S. to avoid being sued by feminists” is... just self-evidently BS? That’s like, a 10 year old on a playground’s understanding of “feminists” and the concept of a lawsuit. The closest thing to a source on it is a vague second or third hand anecdote passed along a decade after the fact from someone who thought one of them was blonde. Plus when you remove the later embellishment about neither of them being trans before being swapped out for random guys in the SNES release, it’s uh... pretty obviously all just a setup for a gross “trans women aren’t really women” joke. So let’s all stop spreading that around and get an adult to fix wikipedia.
All THAT said, back to the full text of the funniest thing I’ve ever read on a wiki:
Tumblr media
“Trivia
Roxy is named after the English rock band Roxy Music. It has been speculated that Roxy is transgender like Poison not only due to the latter's gender history but also because of Roxy being referred to as a "newhalf" (Japanese term for a pre-op transgender person) in her original character concept art, but this has never been confirmed or denied.”
Yes, that’s right. According to the Street Fighter wiki, some people have this wacky theory that Roxy might be trans, just because the artist who first designed her wrote a giant note under the illustration stating “hey this is a trans woman!” And apparently this “has never been confirmed or denied” despite the citation note literally linking to her original concept art. Which, again, could not be more clear on this subject.
Tumblr media
You can’t even ask, “what do designers have to do? Spell it out for you!?” because they ACTUALLY DID in this case.
But I’ve got one more for you all. The other day see, someone showed me a recent scan from the manga One Piece, with a very satisfied “well that should finally settle this.”
Tumblr media
So... full disclosure here, I haven’t been up to date on what’s going on in One Piece for at least like a decade, and my effort to catch up on the context here ironically just involved me hastily trying to look up what that is with the horns between Luffy and Zoro. I’m not even sure what his name is. But I sure as hell know when I’m looking at some wiki editing weirdo trying to deny a character is trans when I see it.
Like all trans characters with wiki pages, we have a big subsection just labelled “Gender” which does some filibustering about “controversy” Japanese not using gendered third person pronouns (and conveniently ignoring the first person ones) and so on before begrudgingly hitting us with something like this:
Tumblr media
“However, certain statements by characters in the manga have continued to create confusion and uncertainty regarding Yamato's gender, particularly regarding Yamato being referred to as Kaidou's son. Yamato has stated that she refers to herself as Kaidou's son due to her desire to adopt Oden's identity, saying "Oden was a man, wasn't he? So I chose to be a man too!"  Yamato has also been referred to as Kaidou's son by Kaidou himself as well as the Beasts Pirates; though their reasons for doing so still remain unclear, given their relationship with the real Oden and their reactions to Yamato claiming to be the legendary samurai. This has led to a significant portion of the fanbase believing that, in-universe, characters who know Yamato consider her to be male, and the official VIZ and Funimation translations have taken this approach, with Luffy and the Beasts Pirates referring to Yamato with masculine ("he/him") pronouns.”
I know, I know, us trans people are always itching to claim any character we can as a trans guy, but just because someone unambiguously says 'I am a man' and 'I am this guy's son' and that guy says 'yes, this is my son' and the official translation exclusively uses he/him pronouns, and when visiting the bathhouse he heads to the men's side and nobody bats an eye at that, well that doesn't really mean ANYTHING, necessarily!
For real though, wiki editors are out here admitting to going out of their way to misgender this guy and stubbornly shout that the official localization is wrong. There’s also some grasping at straws involving a trading card, but like... even if the guy writing the manga were to say “oh this character is actually a girl” that wouldn’t trump the fact that he... unambiguously says “I’m a guy, refer to me as a guy, everyone refers to me as a guy, I am living my life as a guy.” Like, that wins. The only way to argue this isn’t a trans character is if you want to go and say he was actually assigned male at birth and we should just ignore the gynecomastia that might have lead to thinking otherwise.
I don’t know what it is about people who edit wikis where they find it so damn hard to admit when a character is trans, but according to the standard they seem to have set, I guess I have to infer that no cis person has ever actually existed in any work of fiction, or indeed in real life! If they did we’d clearly be bombarded with crass jokes about them.
Also for real, for as often as people make [citation needed] jokes, nobody who edits wikipedia seems to know a primary source from a hole in the ground. People seem to just be searching for whatever they just typed, pasting the first hit, and praying nobody thinks to look at any of the footnotes. It is a MESS down there.

On matters of address in Ferelden
I went on a minor journey this week trying to figure out for fic purposes what you would use as a respectful address for an untitled person in Ferelden, particularly a person you didn't know very well or might not even know their name. "Ser" is for knights, and "Serah" is specifically a Marcher address that I'm fairly certain was not retconned to Fereldan usage. (At least the wiki seems not to think so, and I believe usage in Inquisition squares with that?)
So the question remains: if you are, let's say, an 11-year-old kid in Denerim, how do you respectfully address the mother of your best friend, the way you'd say "Mrs. So-and-So" in our world? If you are a merchant addressing a customer in the Market District, and you don't know their name but they're clearly a commoner, how do you address them? There had to be an answer to this. And I'm happy to say I found it. In a little sidequest from Lothering, "A Last Keepsake," which asks the player to find the remains of a "Goodwife Sarha," and retrieve a keepsake for her surviving son (the lost boy met in Lothering). A "Goodwife Valena Turnoble" is also mentioned in Awakening.
"Goodwife," in the real world, is an archaic Scottish address for a female head of household, so given the Scottish influences on Ferelden's worldbuilding, this makes perfect sense. The male counterpart would be "Goodman," though I don't recall any examples of this actually appearing in canon. It's unfortunate that there isn't an obvious gender-neutral version. (I love Dragon Age's "Ser," "Serah," and "Messere" for that reason!) But at least there's an answer.
I'd feel pretty confident saying that it's also totally acceptable to address any Fereldan adult by their profession, such as Horsemaster or Farmer or Cooper or Baker or whatever, but I just felt like there needed to be a default address to fall back on.
Wikipedia also notes that "a woman addressed by this title [Goodwife] was of a lesser social rank than a woman addressed as Mistress," an address that "implies 'lady of the house', especially a woman who is head of a household with domestic workers." "Mistress" is an address we do hear in Dragon Age with just that usage: women who are heads of household or otherwise in charge of things, such as Mistress Woolsey in Awakening, or Mistress Poulin in Sahrnia in Inquisition. We also have Master Dennet, the Redcliffe Horsemaster. So "Master" and "Mistress" are generally acceptable addresses for people who are in charge of anything, but not formally titled.
So if you were a child addressing a friend's father, you could say "Hello, Goodman So-and-So," and if you were a merchant being polite to a customer who is not titled and doesn't have any other appropriate address, and you didn't know their name, you could probably say, "Rainy weather we're having, Goodwife," without giving any offense.
If you have any thoughts (or more knowledge of the lore and/or real world history to add to any of this), I'd love to hear them!

eyyy kinda wanted to dissect the list on the wiki of "lgbtq characters in fallout" so here we go
I dont remember everything and only from my perspective but this is exactly "how much gay" i think there is to each of these characters
Tumblr media
davin, miria, and leslie are all more or less "playersexual" if i remember right. i dont remember any dialogue that directly mentions their sexualities...but maaaaybe? its been a while since ive touched fo2. Oddly enough i do remember a random female npc in (i think) vault city who you could randomly flirt with and then she turns down a female chosen one, and i think she said something kinda homophobic to you instead? fo2 was the first game in the market to have same gender marriage, even if it's just playersexuality. so hey. it was progressive for its time tbqh
i never played F:BOS but ruby is a prostitute and has unique dialogue for sleeping with men or women so, yay representation, i guess
carol and greta are kinda gay? its implied. More implied then some. she calls her "my greta" and they sleep in the same bed or something. thats pretty ok.
Elaine, angela, dobson, alan are all just mentioned in notes you find in the mojave
Veronica has unique dialogue depending on the couriers gender, if your male she'll say something like "only if your a leggy burnette" and if your a female she says "buy me dinner first", she also has dialogue about her relationship with christine and how the BoS disapprove of same sex relationships bc they want offspring
alex has unique dialogue for male couriers if you have the confirmed bachelor perk, and at the end of the credits for the wild wasteland perk it says hes a man who likes men
arcade has unique dialogue with a male courier where you can flirt with him if you have confirmed bachelor. he says he want a man to sweep him off his feet, and he says the only woman in his life is Daisy, his mother figure
betsy flirts with a female courier and turns down a male courier, and she has dialogue about being only into women (this was kinda vague in my brain but i know its pretty explicit)
Cass has one line that says she will sleep with anyone when she is drunk
jimmy refuses to sleep with female couriers, and if you are a female courier he tells you his story about how he escaped the legion as a slave since they kill any gay legionaries
knight has unique dialogue with a male courier with the confirmed bachelor perk and tells you about how the mojave part of ncr is a little bit more homophobic then the CA part for some reason (fair enough though, its nevada) and fixes your gear for free
christine "signs" to you her background with her veronica, granted i think you need to have high-ish perception to understand it
Mel has unique dialogue with bobbie when your a male sole survivor, calling you "easy on the eyes" or something, but doesnt have that dialogue for female ones. it was very short and not expanded on lol
deb and kay are marked as married in the creation kit, nothing in game
duff and scara have kinda couple-like dialogue with each other, and in dialogue notes it says theyre a couple, nothing in game
miranda has one line of dialogue (behind a charisma check) about how she trusted a female wastelander, gave her caps, and then that wastelander left to diamond city and married a man
andre is a dying man who you heal with a medic check (otherwise he dies), and when he wakes up he tells you how his husband john died by fog crawlers or whatever, so he wants to go out and die trying to fight them. you then need to pass a charisma check to stop him from killing himself via large crabs
johns the dead guy
is mckinney lgbtq? the robobrain? apparently, the wiki says he mentions he loved ezra, the robobrain who was embezzling and then murdered that other robobrain and then took her identity. okay. (i completely missed this because personally i didnt like this quest that much).
i have never played fallout 76 so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
honestly with this kind of criteria, i would argue more characters in fnv should be on this list?? Manny should be on the list since you could flirt with him as a male courier. like idk its very flimsy, and if your going to stick character that were only gay through notes in the script, you might as well just stick any character that sorta maybe kinda could possibly be lgbtq lmao
and also ive always hated how lgbtq characters backstories/sexuality are sometimes "locked" behind certain stat checks and perks. granted, its way better then it only being mentioned in the creation kit, but like. idk. i dont think its right for the only bi/gay representation you really get can only happen if you have specific stats or perks while theres pleeeeeenty of M/F backstories and dialogue in these games that are just... there, without needing high charisma or speech or a perk or whatever. the confirmed bachelor/charchez la femme perk is a neat idea but i dont hink it should have ben the biggest factor for seeing lgbtq representation in FNV, since it essentially "hides" the content from cis/het people who dont want to see it...if that makes sense. like its playing it kinda safe you know :/

HYPNOSIS MICROPHONE 4TH INTERNATIONAL POLL (DECEMBER 2020) Part 6: Fandom and the Future of HypMic
Tumblr media
Thank you for your participation! These are the final results for the 4th Hypnosis Microphone International Poll. After months of work on this, we have estimates for general fandom opinions. Do you agree or disagree with the general opinions? Please let us know!
The results were held back from original posting as we were waiting to post for a month before the 2nd DRB finals (which is on Doppo’s Birthday this year.) My deepest apologies for how long this took to get out. We will be releasing these results with a section per day, with the end of these results showing the Japanese side.
Click the READ MORE to view the results.
PREFACE
The data collection for this poll received 902 votes to give us an indication of the demographic of those who consume Hypnosis Mic. This poll was open to English speakers, and thus, results may be considerably Euro/American-centric. The word ‘international’ has been used to refer to how fans are from many places around the world, but the poll may also refer to this group as ‘English-speaking’ etc. The Japanese poll had a smaller respondent pool with 400.
This poll received the most activity through Twitter, given that the series is most active on that platform. The poll was also posted on Tumblr, Facebook and the HypMic wiki. Commentary has been given on sections of the poll. These results will be available in full on from this account. The Japanese poll results shall follow about a week with comparison to this poll.
The poll was conducted from December 2020 to January 2021. This poll is UNOFFICIAL and none of the composers of this poll have any relation to King Records whatsoever.
This has been split into MULTIPLE posts due to the amount of data and limitations of tumblr.

i'm,, trans and hc chihiro to be a male..
i'm sorry, but i don't quite understand how that's transphobic. could you please explain how chihiro is transmisogynistic? (sorry if i come off as rude - that's not my intention and i genuinely just don't understand, though i would like to!!)
What is transmisoginy?
"Transmisogyny is a distinct category of transphobia in that transmisogyny mainly focuses on trans women and other transgender individuals who demonstrate femininity, whereas transphobia is a more general term, covering a broader spectrum of prejudice and discrimination towards transsexual and transgender individuals. Julia Serano states in Whipping Girl that "when the majority of jokes made at the expense of trans people center on 'men wearing dresses' or 'men who want their penises cut off' that is not transphobia – it is transmisogyny. When the majority of violence and sexual assaults committed against trans people is directed at trans women, that is not transphobia – it is transmisogyny." "
Chihiro is written to mock trans women, to say that in reality trans women are secretly men, she is a man who is weak and uses being trans as a way to escape her problems, this is a thing that is also said to trans men a lot, that theyre just trying to avoid the hard parts of being a woman by becoming a man. Even if the writters intended it to be like that or not (which they probably did because transphobia is a big thing that happens a lot, obviously) it's still transmisogynistic. Thats that on that
This is a pretty common transphobic trope actually, the "Turns out this one character was actually from the opposite sex??!!", theres more examples of this in other games outside Danganronpa.
But also her experience is pretty different from other examples, her experiences are way too similar with trans womens experiences.
This is mostly for the cis people who call her a crossdresser and refuse to change their mind, on it, sit down.
Written by a trans man.
Don't tell me whats transphobic and what it's not transphobic if you're cis. Just sit down and read.
Tw: transphobia, transmisoginy, death mentions and blood in the pictures.
The game implies a lot of stuff with her dialogue, it doesn't straight up says "I don't want to be a woman anymore, I'm a man" like everyone claims it does.

Chihiro Fujisaki: Strong enough so that when someone says "even thought you're a boy" I'll be okay. I'll get better! ]

Chihiro Fujisaki: I have to change. I don't want to be weak anymore ]
She goes to Mondo not because hes masculine, but because she admires him and his strength. She never once says it's because shes a man or because Mondo is a man.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ Alt text 1:
Chihiro Fujisaki: Maybe talking to Mondo about it will help give me some courage... ]
[ Alt text 2:
Chihiro Fujisaki: I admire... your strength... ]
These dialogues can be read in two ways, the first one being the one the game tries the hardest to put in your head thats shes a man, all of this guessed by other people btw not what she herself says. Which is really transphobic, because she was written as a trans woman and then theyre like "uh no actually hes a man, because he was born as one but hes a coward so he started to dress as a woman to hide from his problems. Because thats what people do right? People who dress as their oppossite gender are so pathetic, specially men amiright? Ahaha"
Reading it in this way really weird, you're doing a lot of mental gymnastics because you would literally call her a trans woman with all of this if the rest of the trial, that consists of cis people assuming shes a man, didn't happen. And sadly you're following transphobic ideas by this. Because the canon is transphobic and transmysoginistic.
And the other way is just read what she says, that she just wants to be stronger and stop lying to everyone, basically about being cis, because shes not, shes amab (assigned male at birth) and thats probably what she said to Mondo, but most people when a trans person who already passes or is in their transition comes out many people tend to think "oh so youre your gender assigned at birth and not the one you claim to be?", because they don't get what being trans is and they think only "biological gender" is a thing. Basically, misgendering and invalidating the trans person.
I can guess all of this just because of how vague they decided to make her dialogue, not even showing how she tells Mondo about being amab.
What did she said to Mondo? "I'm trans"? "I'm a man"? "I was born a man"? We dont know, because they didn't show it and she died right afterwards and then everyone was like "Chihiro was secretly a man" to solve the case and thats it. A lot of people in the discourse get their information from Monokuma who isn't either Chihiro or even Mondo. Monokuma knows many things but he can't read minds to know if she was really trans or not, only she could say it but she died so she couldn't explain if shes trans or not.

A youtube comment by Gail Frisbee, posted 4 days ago, this comment was edited by the autor. The comment says:
"It's honestly increible to me when people try to argue that a scene in which a female-presenting character gets their genitals groped and then is posthumously referred to as a male from that point on can't be transphobic just because that character calls themselves a boy in some other side content later. It's on about the same level of intellectual honesty as claiming that Quiet from MGS5 isn't really fanservice because she totally breaths throught her skin you guys.
As it turns out, if you really dig down deep into the lore, Chihiro is a fictional character and the same people who wrote the genital investigation scene also wrote the lines that character says in the game as well. It's a shocking twist, I know." ]
Her fears of being outed and people founding out her secret (being trans) or being transphobic is used as a gross big twist. A trans woman being used as a mockery of trans people? Great totally normal (/sarcasm)
Read this post made by a trans woman. I'll be using this only part but it's still a great read.
Tumblr media
[ Alt text:
So. There is a lot to unpack here, but I want to start with something that specifically hurts me as a trans woman, and that's how the game flippantly uses real world horrors trans people face as shocking reveals and twists. You can go down the list for "worst nightmares" of trans people incluiding:
Threatening to be outed against your wishes
Outing yourself to a trusted friend and being met with rejection, or worse, violence
Having your body and privacy examined and invaded
Having your deadname used and being misgendered after death, when you can't correct them ]
Now, let's go to her backstory for a bit. I will be using the wiki for this. (Which sadly uses he/him for her 💔)
" When Chihiro was a child, he became the subject of harassment and bullying. He was always told to "be a man" and that he was "so weak despite being a boy", and because of that, Chihiro slowly but surely began to develop a "weakness complex". In order to escape the bullying, Chihiro began to dress as a girl so that people wouldn't bully him as a weak boy. "
This doesn't sound like a normal crossdresser, this sounds like a trans woman who was bullied for being different when she was younger, like many trans people, and then she decided to transition because she's a woman, she wanted to be more feminine and stop being seen as a person shes not. Specially after so many people tell her to basically man up when she doesn't want that, because shes not a man.
Have you ever heard of the classic stories of "since I was little i knew i was different, i was a boy who liked playing with dolls and was more feminine than the rest" or "i used to be a tomboy when i was little, i had mostly male friends, i liked playing with car toys and was more masculine than other kids" coming from trans people? This just sounds as these types of stories to me.
People also like to say that alter ego uses he/him pronouns and says shes a boy. Many trans people can misgender themselves for personal reasons too guys, she could've been trying to misgender herself because she didn't felt like she wasn't enough to be a real woman, this happens a lot to trans people. If people constantly tell you that you're not actually transgender or you just feel like you're faking it then you might actually believe it, thats were most "detransitioners" come from. And thats basically what they made her, a detransitioner.
Some of you might also don't get how shes trans because you think she doesn't perfect or exact trans stereotypes. Trans experiences can be similar on the feeling of not fitting in, dysphoria, etc. But trans experiences, stories, transitions and complete lifes can be very different, because we all (including cis people) live different lifes, experience, process and cope with things differently. So i can understand why you might not get her being trans coded at first, don't worry. But try instead of just not caring because you don't get it at the first try, to see what trans people say.
This whole discourse its mostly cis people talking over trans people about their own experiences (incluiding the dead trans coded characters experience) saying if theyre valid or not and denying stuff not wanting to learn anything, completely refusing to it because "In canon hes a boy" ok then in canon shes written in a transphobic way too but most of you don't care about that. You would rather call her a crossdresser than try to acknowledge how obviously trans coded she is and how thats used as transphobia.
The way most cis people act in this discourse is very transphobic to me to be honest, if you think you're a good ally but act like this then you should get more educated on the topic as a whole and about trans people too.
-the trans Chihiro flag to finish this up, she has a bit boobie! good for her! good for her.

contemplating the sexism of MDZS' society, got to wondering about the number of female clan leaders
I mean this isn't a comprehensive review, mostly I used my memory + looked up references from the wiki, but:
Wen: Wen Mao is a man (ch 72, it's not actually mentioned the first few times he's mentioned), WRH is a man, rest I couldn't find. The third clan leader is mentioned as having built a wall around the Burial Mounds (ch 67) but I couldn't find a gender.
Nie: NMJ, NHS, and their father are all men; the sixth, fifth and fourth sect leaders were all men (ch 26). The founder is mentioned as a butcher but I couldn't find a gender. Rest I couldn't find.
Jin: JGS, JGY, and JL are all men; rest I couldn't find.
Jiang: JFM and JC are men; I think the text suggests that it was JFM's father (or rather, not JFM's mother, which I guess doesn't rule out more complicated inheritance scenarios), more on which later. The founder, Jiang Chi, is given a name but I couldn't find a gender (ch 56). The rest I couldn't find.
Lan: we're explicitly told than Lan Yi, the third Lan clan leader, was the only female clan leader (ch 55). We know of at least four others: Lan An, the second clan clearer, QHJ, and LXC. We also have a bit of a sense for how much time passed between now and then—we're told that if BSSR was indeed alive in the generation of Lan An and Wen Mao she must be a "few hundred" (Taming Wangxian) or "hundreds" of (Exiled Rebels) years old (chapter 29). We're also told that WM legendarily killed a divine beast "hundreds" of years ago (ER, ch 72). So however many Lan clan leaders there were in that time, Lan Yi was the only one.
Looking at more minor sects: Ouyang-zongzhu is a man (ch 84); Yao-zongzhu is a man (ch 110); Qin Canghe is a man (ch 86); He Su (of the Tingshan He) is a man (ch 118); Moling Su is led by SMS; the Yueyang Chang were led by Chang Ping and his father Chang Ci'an before him, both men (ch 30). I can't find anything for Yingchuan Wang.
And there's Baoshan Sanren, of course, although she's not exactly a clan leader.
The Meishan Yu are interesting. Certainly they produced Madam Yu, and presumably Madam Jin who grew up with her, and Madam Yu's impressive servants, Jinzhu and Yinzhu. The wiki argues that Meishan Yu are likely led by a woman around the time of Sunshot, given that JFM tells JC to find his grandmother at Meishan ("try to go to Meishan as soon as possible to find your sister and your grandmother") ch 58). On the other hand I'll observe that Madam Yu gives him similar instructions earlier in the chapter but /doesn't/ mention JC's grandmother ("Go to Meishan straight away and find your sister!"), and also—as far as I can tell the Chinese is for paternal grandmother? I could easily be misunderstanding something here but in the text as I find it it's 江枫眠道:“我回去,你们两个离开。不要调转方向,不要回莲花坞。上岸之后立刻想办法去眉山找你姐姐和祖母。” And 祖母 is paternal grandmother I think?? I tried rereading some of the past-timeline chapters and couldn't find any other references to JFM's mother, but I could easily have missed them. If this is so, though, it does suggest that JFM's mother was not clan leader before him.
ETA: ah, just wanted to note that I was rereading the studying in CR chapters and although Madam Jin did grow up with Madam Yu, she's not from Meishan Yu (ch 18):
The only reason why Jiang YanLi was able to enter an engagement with Jin ZiXuan was because her mother was from the MeishanYu Sect, and the MeishanYu Sect was quite friendly with the sect of which Jin ZiXuan’s mother was from. The two madams grew up together, and they had a close relationship.
Oh, I'll mention for completion's sake—apparently people read this passage from ch 60 as meaning that people wanted WQ to take over the Wen? That isn't my reading at all, but I'll put it here so people can judge for themselves:
Wen Qing cut him off, “What the Wen Sect does doesn’t represent what we do. We don’t need to be responsible for the Wen Sect’s wrongdoing. Wei Ying, there’s no need to look at me like that. There’s a beginning to all debts. I’m the office leader of Yiling, but I was ordered to take the position. I’m a medic, an apothecary, I’ve never killed anyone, much less touched the blood of the Jiang Sect.”
It was true. Nobody had heard of any lives lost by Wen Qing’s hands. There were always many cases that people wanted her to take over. It was because Wen Qing was one of the Wen Sect’s people whose way of doing things was actually normal. At times she could even put in a few good words for people in front of Wen RuoHan. Her reputation had always been good.
Anyway. Eeesh. What a ratio. WWX doesn't say that Lan Yi was the only female clan leader ever, so presumably there have been others, but....eesh. It's a very sexist society!
I mean it's not just the clan leaders, you kind of see it all over the place. The Lan are strictly gender-segregated (ch 114), although at least they do have female cultivators in sufficient number that they can go on their own night-hunts (ch 114). Madam Jin and Madam Yu are very powerful, but their husbands are still in charge. The terms in which Yao-zongzhu chides JL for crying in ch 110. The reactions to Mianmian's defense of WWX in ch 73. Madam Jin disapproves of WWX and JYL, "a young man and a young woman," being alone together (ER, ch 70). WC's beliefs about the purpose and role of women (ch 59), his treatment of the few female cultivators during the Wen indoctrination and the fact that there are so few female cultivators to begin with (ch 52), and also that he doesn't spend more than half a year on any given woman max (ch 61). And I know there's lots more, this is really just off the top of my head!!
I think I'd agree that the society CQL presents is less sexist (albeit still very sexist). But MDZS....man. It really is very sexist! In general I feel like I don't see cultivation society presented as nearly this sexist in fandom, although usual caveats for personal experience not being universal and I suspect a lot of people the time they're drawing more from CQL. Still, from a perspective of understanding people's actions and/or characters in MDZS, it does seem worth noting.
...also if anyone else has anything on female clan leaders I would be very curious!!! It's not like I reread the whole text for this, I was mostly just tracking down references, so if anyone does remember anything I'd love to hear about it!!
