Tell me about his insecurities and what is his idea of love

Insecurities? all of them From a physical standpoint i think Riko is insecure about his height - especially with TSC repeating again and again how important height is to an exy player. Riko is somewhere between 5'3 to 5'5 - standing on the same line as Kevin who is at least 6'. I've always liked to think that Tetsuji and ichirou are a fair bit taller than him too, that his mother was short and he takes after her. But he doesn't know that, because all he knows is that he is at a disadvantage due to his height and has to work through it. I think he would rely more on speed - which is why i draw him slimmer, too much bulk slows him down. shorter, quicker, able to move through gaps others cant. he'd hate neil for being the same height but faster and everything he's been aiming to be. I think thats part of why he forces him back into defence. He's also incredibly insecure about his dynamic with Kevin. He knows deep down that Kevin is better than him at Exy. (and better than him at academics, and dealing with people, and controlling his emotions, and many little things that dont matter as much as the exy) He knows the tattoos are wrong, and he knows Kevin is holding himself back. Riko is nothing if he's not the best, if he's not perfect, and all of this spills out as violence. Lashing out at Kevin for being better, lashing out at others to remind himself he's better than them. Riko isn't perfect. Nobody is. He can't stand it. Ofc his insecurities are exy based because theres nothing else in his life.

Love is. Belonging. Acceptance. Its something to attain, something to deserve, something to earn. His father looking at him even once would be love. Its proof that he's worth anything. Love is the praise he got when he was younger. love is the title of king that was given to him by the team he wasnt even part of yet. Sometimes tetsuji's corrections are love. sometimes they arent. He knows Tetsuji doesn't love him but the actions can be loving. The pain can be from love. Sometimes when Riko corrects Kevin its love. sometimes its not. It used to be, a lot of it now is just anger. Riko loves Kevin with gifts. he takes history because kevin asked. he lets him get away with distractions - his studies, the decorations, the books. He tried to give him Andrew. He gave him his number. Kevin loves Riko in ways that Riko can't understand. Kevin tries to protect Riko from pain that Riko has long since accepted and understood as necessary. love isnt real

about the choking scene, it really is the damn kevin of it all that I hate about it😭but not because I like kevin as a character (I do, but that's not the point) but more because I personally hate the idea where its like you can only have the one person youre in a romantic relationship with important to you and evrything else comes second and fandoms push that a lot, though I expected something different from a fandom that probably has more ace/aro ppl than others, other types of relationships can be just as important and I think it would be nice for characters who have been lonely for so long to have a few people who are important to them 😭I think it's like you said where I don't like when other relationships get butchered for the romantic one, I don't think it was ooc, and even if it was, people do things in desperate situations that are ooc so that wouldn't be a problem, it's that a lot of readers make it this romantic thing or a thing where Andrews prioritised neil over kevin, or has picked neil over kevin and they do the same thing with aaron too, it's like can't andrew love and care about his brother and boyfriend and kevin at the same time😭does it have to be a competition? Love can't even be quantified so a competition would be stupid anyway

I just think I hate the way a lot of people talk about it and I wanted to discuss it with a person whose posts are more objective and that I like, like it's such a tricky scene to think about, it's like the wires get crossed in my head its a hard scene to contend with in general

omg yeah basically everything you've said here is how I feel about it. a lot of people say that Andrew's relationship with Neil is more significant and just means more than any of Andrew's other relationships because of how Neil you know. gets him I guess. but honestly even though I fully understand that his relationship with Neil is on a different level, I still hate the ditching of Kevin (AND AARON UGH I HATE HOW THE TWINS LITERALLY CHOSE THEIR S/O'S OVER EACH OTHER. it's completely understandable in context and it is way more in character than the opposite would've been but still. I hate it) and I think people also tend to like. baby Andrew when it comes to his relationship with Kevin like "well if Kevin treated him better and understood him better then mAYBE—"

but yeah the thing that makes me most uncomfortable about the choking bit is like you said how people try to make it romantic. which, to be honest, is I think how it's supposed to be taken like it's supposed to be showing Andrew's desperation and how far he's willing to go for Neil. I just. well. I despise that Kevin was the one that had to be used to demonstrate that. but the whole thing is that, because that's Kevin, it's the only way to show the magnitude of Andrew's frustration, like it wouldn't have been the same if he'd just trashed the hotel room in rage or something but I still hate that he overstepped their boundaries for it because me personally I'm thinking about Kevin when I read that scene, not Andrew and Neil.

that whole thing just uses how important Kevin is to Andrew to show how much more important Neil now is. so if you're mostly about the romance in these books, which I think a lot of fans are, then ofc you'll eat that up but personally the non romantic pairings always are more interesting and dearer to me so I think that's why it bothers me

NTN opinions

so I haven't read NTN very recently (or the other locked tomb books) but its the most recent installment about Nona I think about a lot.

Muir said that she was splitting Alecto the Ninth into two parts, NTN and then ATN. She explained that Nona already had a complete story arc and could be its own separate book. Obviously there's nothing wrong with that.

But to be quite honest, I feel like most of NTN could have been cut. The most important parts of Nona are these:

Now don't get me wrong, I loved seeing Nona going to school as a teachers aide and making friends! The problem is, the relationships she develops with the kids like Hot Sauce aren't...very important. I think it would have been better if Nona developed relationships with characters that she already knew, like Crown (Coronabeth) for example.

If Nona being friends with a group of kiddos is important, then maybe she should do it specifically with kids from the Blood of Eden. Out of all of Nona's friends, her relationship with Noodle the dog is the most important, and maybe Hot Sauce. She could be another niece of Wake, the same as Pash. It would explain why Hot Sauce is so suspicious of necromancers and why she shot up Nona in that one scene.

Also, If Nona is the secret weapon, why isn't she more involved with B.O.E? It's implied that the Blood of Eden is on the struggle bus. Wouldn't the inception have more depth if Nona was among their ranks right before their eyes, it'd be a major example of why they've failed for so long to stop Mr. Jod.

Cam and Palamedes could have gathered a few trust worthy relationships used to protect Nona too. Heck, the Blood of Eden could have a "school" of their own where they teach the kids of their soldiers propaganda, look at how Pash was raised!

I genuinely believe that all of the stuff that happened could have been condensed to a feasible first part. As an author, cutting things we're proud of writing is like shooting yourself in the head then doing it again. But I think if I was in Muir's shoes, I would've done it. I love Hot Sauce, Kevin and the other kiddos so much but they're just...not important enough for the over all plot :(

Lastly, and this is where I'm getting super nit picky, but I wish there was more world building. I 100% appreciate Muir's trust in the readers intelligence and for us to put the pieces together. I understood that Steles were used to travel far distances and "flip" planets to be colonized for necromancers. I VASTLY prefer this instead of five hundred pages of exposition (Fourth Wing) slammed into the beginning of the book.

That being said, a little bit of exposition is fine. Gideon The Ninth does this perfectly with explaining thanergy and other necromancer related info. We learn more in HTN as well. I think Muir was thinking that "Nona wouldn't know these things, so it can't be expressed in the book" which I totally get, but Nona has a canon excuse for just Having knowledge! Her uncanny reading of body language and understanding of different languages? Her ability to draw animals from Earth that were lost to public knowledge? Nona just casually absorbing information and thinking about it in her internal monologue is completely reasonable. I say this to point out that Muir was too vague with the world building in NTN. Yes, I could fill in the gaps but I would have loved more information about the colony planets outside of the House system! She's doing too much showing, which I think is precisely why NTN got much too long.

Anyway, PLEASE take all of this with a grain of salt. I love Nona the Ninth and I think the way it was written is digestible and good! It's just not how I would have done it. Please Tamsyn I'm begging you for lore I am BEGGING YOU FOR LORE.

Oh and the foxes 1000000% make fun of Neil for living in Britain. They're constantly talking to him in a British accent and when the Queen died they all showed up in his room offering gifts of condolences.

They also make sleepover nights mandatory. The first few years they just had the og foxes let into the dorms but after they all graduated Kevin made a whole separate room just for the foxes where they have sleepovers. It's decked out with beanbags, weighted blankets, stuffed animals and his favourite photos of the Foxes printed out and framed and a TV.

He says Jeremy picked it out but secretly it was all him and he would rather die than let them find out. Somehow they did (Jeremy ratted him out) and Kevin's nickname was permanently changed to softie. No they did not secretly feel giddy with happiness, no they didn't think this was the best thing Kevin Day has ever done absolutely not.

I actually want to congratulate you on your work because what I don't think a lot of people in this fandom understand is that Riko is a character that is FUCKING HARD to get right. Not just to understand, but to WRITE. You can't make him too unhinged or he's just a cartoon villain and you can't make his actions too light (If you're writing within canon) or he looks like a pathetic clown instead of the actual threat he is on canon and if you aim for the middle he can end up just bland (AND I WILL SAY the greatest offenders in this are Riko haters and not his stans). And even in your most redemptionest AUs you manage to write him in a way that is consistent with the existing characterisation. I have yet to come across from a post by you that didn't make me think "yeah, if things went different, he could have turned out like this"

I actually see riko as very pathetic and non threat myself and I'm pretty sure Neil and most foxes do as well because even on my first reading of the books something stuck out to me pręty severly

Riko? Riki never actually got his hands dirty it does separate him already in cannon as all bark no bite whose only way to be intimidating is to use family name and people who follow him menawhile Riko himself is scary only to Kevin.

Riko's buildup in narrative as threat is very good but I really wouldn't confuse it as fear of him himself.

He does not feel worthles he is just frustrated that others see him as such

Also growing pains are important thing to show

I think saddest and my favourite thing about riko is that the better person you let him be the more unhappy he will be.being good person won't erase things he did in the past and hurt he caused and the further you go the heavier it will be on his conscience and this is balance in act and I have way too many versions of the story where I let him snap

Maybe my reading of character is different in the end we all base things we create on things we know and while I never did such horrible things I know how it feels to grow into being a better person than I used to be and I know how it feels to still not believe you did got better even when I have friends to prove. There is a lot of comfort in seeing someone so horrible get nice things not because I did those horrible things but because I know how it feels to not deserve anything nice and hate myself enough to self sabotage.

I could go on also to talk about difference between gloryfying physical abuse in fandom and ignoring psychological abuse but maybe that's a talk for another time.

Reviewing every rpg book on my shelf: 7, Wolves of God

Wolves of God by Kevin Crawford is a game about adventuring in early anglo-saxon england and its prime virtue is in how thoroughly (and for the most part accurately) it develops that time period and attempts to place players in the outlook of those people. I happen to have a particular love for the early middle ages and for the anglo-saxons in particular, which places me directly in the target demographic for this game, and as far as I am concerned it delivers.

Mechanically Wolves of God is built on the same fundamental system as Kevin Crawfords other ‘without number’ games: So an osr type game with a greater than usual quantity of character build options and a particular focus on sandbox play.

The first thing you notice when you read the book is the framing device. The book is treated as if it was a manuscript written by a monk in 710AD (the rather opinionated Brother Cornix) documenting anglo-saxon gaming practice that has been unearthed and edited by Kevin Crawford. This lends the whole book a very unique and (to me) entertaining voice. For illustration here is a section from character creation:

The rules in these pages will show you how to make your bold adventurer, but do not be a thrall to man-marked ink on pale parchment. If your band of gamesmen has their own thought to the right way to manage a matter, then let it be done as you and your companions think best. Listen, then, and I will tell you how to make an English hero. From the first strong sinews of the mortal body to the crown of reason and high ambition, you will learn what makes a mighty champion of our people.

The styling as a medieval manuscript does, however, mean that many standard features of modern layout are absent, such as bullet points being replaced by paragraphs starting ‘primus’, ‘secundus’, ‘Tertius’, etc and that overall the text is much wordier than most contemporary rpgs. However, there are footnotes and sidebars from ‘the editor’ which summarise important rules or discuss some of Brother Cornix’s biases, and I find that, overall, the writing style is worth it for the level of immersion in the culture that it provides.

There are three classes you can use to create your ‘English Hero’ (plus an option for multiclassing): the warrior, the saint, and the galdorman. These are broadly analogous to the original D&D fighting man, cleric, magic user line up but each has twists to place it in the setting. The big point is that each classes has a set of ‘glories’ and ‘shames, which determine how they gain (or lose!) xp. These do a lot to place your character within the outlook and value system of the early middle ages. For instance the saints shames tie them to follow the law of the church, while a warriors shames relate to oath breaking or betraying your lord or friends. An interesting feature is that, while warriors or galdormen can escape shame if no one knows what they did, a saint always suffers the penalty as ‘God knows all things.’

Which is a good segue for talking about christianity and how deeply enmeshed it is in the setting. The book spends almost as many pages detailing the essentials of early medieval christianity as it does describing the rules for combat, and then goes on to spend twice as many pages describing monasteries and giving rules for generating them. Basically, religion was really important then and also quite unlike how we as modern people understand it.

Among the other things that were important to people then but unfamiliar to a modern audience are: Cattle Raids, Feasting etiquette, a gift economy, and the weight placed on fate. All of which Wolves of god sets out rules and procedures to guide you though. Outside of what is rendered in the rules to book also lays out an expansive description of anglo-saxon england covering the legal system, customs, farming practice, history and the main kingdoms. In contrast to games (D&D) where you play as essentially modern people in an essentially modern world wrapped in medieval aesthetics, Wolves of God is a game where you simply must inhabit the alien world that is the past.

Apart from the areas where is does deviate from history, which is primarily in the transformation of old roman ruins into portals to pocket dimensions (or ‘arxes’) created with ancient roman magic into which the romano-british retreated. What with it being, at its root, a dungeon crawling game I can see why there was a need to add magical dungeons and a treatment of roman ruins is definetly appropriate as the remnants of roman civilisation is deeply important to this time period (see the old english poem ‘the ruin’) but there is still fundamentally something about the inclusion of arxes that does not work for me. I think it is, perhaps, that the existence of dungeons and the delving off them is too big a thing to add without it dramatically changing the setting. A world with dungeon delving adventures is inevitably drawn into the sphere of classical D&D fantasy and away from the early middle ages. Fortunately, I can simply choose not to have any arxes and instead focus on more historical adventures with the odd mythical creature or barrow delve thrown in (don’t ask me why a barrow feels different to an arxe. It just does, ok)

A final note: My copy is the deluxe edition, which is unfortunately no longer available. I think the only difference with the print on demand version will be a less premium binding and printing and not having the red cover with gold

An Inquiry Into The Perfection Of Systems

(Or, Kevin Flynn is actually the worst and Clu never stood a chance)

So, this is a post about business analysis/project management, sort of. It is also, mostly… about Tron: Legacy. Hold onto your seats, we’re going to talk about IT project management.

Developing software and managing a software development project require surprisingly different skillsets. While intrinsically connected, Computer Logic and People Logic are not at all the same sort of logic. There is no better way to observe this than by putting developers in charge of managing a development project. (Looking at you, Flynn.)

I see you, Kevin Flynn.

There are a couple questions you have to answer in the process of a dev project. They are very common sense questions, like…

When will we call it done?

What does “done” mean?

How do we assess the quality of the result?

As is usually the case when common sense meets computers, the answer is more complicated than the question, to the point that a great many books and papers have been written on the subject. (1)

Does this look like a man who reads Project Management books? No.

Which brings me to a number of useful concepts: Definition of Done, Fit For Use, and Fit For Purpose. The terms may be more recent, but their spirit most definitely isn’t.

Definition of Done is what is says on the tin. It is formally defining what it means for an IT feature to be fully finished: what does it need to do, what does it need to look like, what quality standards does it need to meet, etcetera. This is not the place to be vague: you want concrete, measurable goals.

(Here’s a hint, in case that wasn’t already glaringly obvious: “Perfect” is not a good Definition of Done.)

Now, you can define this “done” in purely hard, technical terms. But typically, software is intended to do something for someone; Computer Logic, meet People Logic. That’s where the “Fit For” terms come in.

“Fit For Purpose” means, the software does what it was intended to do.

“Fit For Use” means, the software does what it does well enough to be actually usable.

THESE ARE NOT MUTUALLY INCLUSIVE.

But a good system is both.

A “Perfect” system would be both to the highest degree. Ideally suited to the requirements of its Users, in functionality and useability both.

Important here is that these are completely relative concepts, entirely dependent on what the users want out of their software. Regardless of how attainable it'd be, you cannot define “perfect” as a measurable goal without understanding what is required of the system in the first place.

Now… look at the Grid.

The Grid has no users. The Grid has no user-end functionalities. The Grid isn’t set up to do anything, really, in the software sense. It fulfills no obvious function.

It’s a back-end environment accidentally turned front-end.

Which is… Imagine if someone walked into a factory and was like “oh wow I love the vibe of this place!” and then after getting home began setting up their own production lines, but based on vibes and aesthetic, with no regard to production output, worker safety, resource management, or even, you know, the goal of actually making anything.

Now picture being the manager of that factory.

They told you when you got this job that you had to make this the perfect factory.

But the place is falling apart despite your best efforts. People are getting injured left and right. The owner disappears for months on end, and when he shows up he just keeps adding more production lines that look cool to him rather than offering any clarity. The hope that he might have a plan for all of this is dwindling fast. You desperately try to keep track of anything quantifiable, trying not to think about the fact that you still don’t know what you’re even meant to be producing here. (Everything going wrong weighs on you; you were meant to make this perfect. You should have the ability to do what you were meant to do, right?)

And then, for some reason, random unauthorized strangers start walking into the factory breaking shit. And because the owner thinks they’re neat, they get to stay and do whatever, and you should be happy about it.

If this was an actual factory, you could... quit your job.

But this isn't a factory, it's a computer, and you, a piece of software, ARE your job.

Tell me this wouldn't drive you off-the-rails crazy. Like, actually full-on psychotic.

I know man. I know.

Computer Logic and People Logic are not the same thing. But Programs, being software and people both, have both influencing their experience.

So, was Clu evil? I rather think he never had a chance to be good.

After all, what is good, for a piece of software?

Just to make it extra clear like...I was thinking of Hunter Sylvester when I wrote the tag. Although I suspect nobody thought otherwise lol Usual disclaimer that this is all just my opinion/interpretation. Y'all know the drill.

I will additionally state that it's actually more common for people to ascribe Hunter random positive traits/attributes that I just don't think he has. Or have him do 'nice' things that I just cannot see him doing. But this was about flaws. Sorry if this reads a little messy, my head is pretty messy lately.

Firstly, I’ve seen people act like he’s just a bitch for the sake of it. Like he’s just an asshole for no reason. And I just cannot agree that that is accurate to the source material. We literally get lines of dialogue that go against that. And from Kevin who is a more reliable source on Hunter than Hunter is most of the time.

“Sometimes he’s not so nice to people when he’s uncomfortable.” “You are afraid of everybody. And instead of showing it, like I do, you treat everybody like shit and you make them hate you.”

He’s uncomfortable, he’s scared. He wants to keep people away because he’s afraid of them. Does this excuse his bullshit? No. But it does explain it. And more importantly (because he is, after all, a fictional character) it makes him interesting. It makes him a more complex character.

Next one is a little less concrete but I still stand by it. I think people overemphasize the importance of Emily being a girl on its own when it comes to him not wanting her in the band. Please hear me out. It absolutely plays a part (and he is a dick for it) but it's always connected to another, deeper reason imo. - He doesn't want a girl in the band because it conflicts with the perfect mental image he has in his head of his band. The mental image of 3-4 leather-clad metal guys (cough gay cough). This is one of the areas where I see autistic perfectionism in him. He can't deal with the ideal image of what he wanted turning out different. - He doesn't want a cello playing girl in the band for the same reason. It doesn't fit what he had in mind. Autism says no. - He doesn't want a girl Kevin brought in the band because he's in love with Kevin. Which he doesn't realize. So all he knows is that Kevin is suddenly hanging out with a girl and wanting her to be involved in their thing and he does not fucking want that. And like, yes, he blames it on "muuh don't wanna have a girl in the band >:c" Because he has the self awareness of a wet rag. He doesn't have the words for the real reasons. He doesn't know he's in love with Kevin. He doesn't even know he's gay & he doesn't know he's autistic/AuDHD. He just knows he feels very strong negative emotions towards Emily.

Once again, none of this excuses his actions. But it makes them more interesting than a surface level asshole character would be. And I simply cannot agree that he is that surface level asshole character. He's just not as flat of a character as people sometimes make him out to be in my opinion.

I guess those are a bit less "free my man he did none of that" and more "yes keep the cuffs on, he did those things, but you must understand the why, please have a seat"

But like I said, head is messy and this already took me a while to answer so this is what I'm going with ^-^

I should be going to be but instead have this rant about an amazing book

killing God but God is representation of your trauma, lies and repression and destroying it ultimately does nothing to solve the issue because ultimately the damage is coming from inside of and your own refusal to face how what happened still lurks in your life, and God was never really a god just a scared cornered animal acting out it’s own survival and it only has the status of a God because people are using it as a symbol to project their fears and hopes on, making it bigger and having it killed for their satisfaction

the world simply being as it is and people projecting different world views on it in their own feeble attempts at understanding and comfort

religion being primarily based in community and belief, fulfilling and yet also restricting. Science being primarily based in isolation and uncertainty, necessary for safety and yet eternally contaminated from its own ideals by human nurture. viewing reality from any angle ultimately guarantees bias and as such by witnessing and trying to understand the world we fundamentally misinterpret it and how at the end of the day the important thing is to be open to other perspectives and view points and to open yourself up to human connection even if it means being wrong, both in the technical sense and in the sense that you hurt someone even with the best intentions and those good intentions do not undermine the hurt

Carlos really hates local government and would be weirdly fine with seeing NighVale as a whole burn if it meant keeping the specific people he loves safe and that is very sexy of him

Loved Pamela. She’s just so much fun, well intended but terrible at communicating and that fits into the border themes of connection doesn’t it

the Joyous Congregation of the Smiling God really went off on the aesthetic. both the pamphlet and the slide show sermon where so fucking good, a perfect mix of creepy, spiritual and well intended. there just enough authentic about the ideology to make you understand why people would fall for it and actually believe in what they say with just enough so overtly wrong it’s unsettling

there was little hits of the old Strex here and there, but for the most part this had no continuity with years 2 or 3 and thats kinda fine because it manages to take the themes and aesthetics of what came before and weave it into something new and amazing. the dessert bluffs and Kevin timeline is totally broken but time is literally broken so...

I loved all the digressing and meanderings of the plot to focus on other set-random Nightvale characters rather than on the main plot and it really drives home the fact that Welcome to NightVale is about NightVale as a community rather than about any one protagonist or narrative. it makes that fact that you can pick up any piece of NighVale with no prior knowledge and jump right in work all the more because everyplace is just a small one in the grand mosaic that is NighVale where every person and every world view counts and this circles back around to what I was saying about community 

and you know what lets circle back around to what I said about Carlos being willing to let Nightvale burn for his family and the lack of continuity with year three and there’s really 2 main things to say, the first being the slightly bizarre retcon to make Carlos’ otherworld stay 10 miserable years instead of 1 where he’s “just staying, not trapped” and how I think we can all agree that Carlos’ “come move to the dessert otherworld with me and abandon all your friends and family became this otherworld is so great for research and my science work babe” and the fact that they never really felt with how Cecil was straight up suicidal and deeply depressed for the later half of the year and the lack of actual resolution to what was going through Carlos’ mind when he decided to come back with absolutely no shown issue or effort, and it is so much weirder for Carlos to try to talk Cecil into moving to a place where he is actually secretly miserable

and the second thing about that is that when Carlos comes back he refers to importance of NightVale as a community rather than a place and how Cecil needs to reconnect wth the people around him and focus “on the everyone” and how Carlos really did primarily come back for Cecil and to be with Cecil and how he says that NightVale is where everyone Cecil loves lives and Carlos really have a very small protective domain of people considered his own

Cecil literally be used as a stand in for the concept of love and connection and dependability itself with Nilanjana contemplating of wanting to find her Cecil and wanting to be Cecil for someone, the emphasis on the radio tower where Nil and Darryl's relationship gets physical for the first time. It is weird to read a piece of Nightvale that doesn’t have Cecil's perspective coloring every thing and never allowing me into his mind but its kinda cool because we instead just see him as a distant pillar of love, support and community and how those are ultimately the things the book believes is universal to science and religion and how concerning that then kinda makes Cecil’s statement that he would give up all of Nightvale for Carlos, even if he would much rather not, but also how good it is that Cecil is allowed to be selfish about something when he has had so much of life decided for him, being prophesied to be the voice of the community, being a tree who’s fruit is fed to the people, who’s truck is chopped down and used to make their shelter and how he nearly did almost once give up all of Nightvale for Carlos by going the the Otherworld with him

It was great seeing Abby even if only for a second

An entire book in the Nightvale style of deeply unsettling and profound and funny is a wonderful idea, with human nature so beautifully captured with in the pages and prose

the appearance of happiness being valued above the actual emotion. teeth as a fragmented symbol, being a part of something natural being a small segment of a symbol of joy and goodness and of course that piecemeal symbol being divorced from context and being made so creepy in that isolation, teeth both as a part of smiling and a part of biting, piece in isolation that could be either joy or devouring

by the way, and I think this is a good thing, Never thought that any of the devoured people where dead. it would fuck with status quo to hard if Larry or Rico where gone. made it more a mystery of how they where going to comeback than an actual threat and thats a good thing

and you know how Cecil never actually talks about Homophobia or racism or any kind of discrimination is his show? and then we step outside of his heavily edited, censored perspective and it turns out theirs still antisemitism and racism and sexism and stuff like that in Nightvale? I think it makes me appreciate Cecil more to know that his pride in his identity and his dedication to showing a mostly egalitarian world, is intact a dedicated choice that he makes about his own identity and not just a passive aspect of his environment. Cecil overall came across as a lot more put together and reliable from other perspectives than his own. I would not have expected Cecil to be able to cook or be an emotional pillar right after his nice almost died. I think he might just have really low opinion of himself and it comes through in the show.

It can be really hard to tell the difference between Cecil being dumb because he’s putting on a show for the audience and trying to get around censorship Cecil being dumb die to reeducation side affects and timeline shenanigans, and Cecil being dumb because he just is. theres so many layers of truth and deception

religion being about the community, belief and interpretation of it all even when the facts are horrible

My god Carlos would have killed so many people and 1000% believed that it was City Council hating him enough to cut off their nose to spite their face and never once stopping to question his remarkably biased assumption. He really took the conflation of hero and scientist hard and is complete willing to force the issue with his own self rightness. Baby Girl you are so deranged!!! and he’s completely head over heels for Cecil. nice to know it goes both ways

also catch me think that Luisa is ‘like that’ as a result of being re-educated a bit to hard after having a mental break down from watching one of her co-workers die from Strex. two scientists went missing that day and we still don’t know what happened. and least one could have died

Nils absolutely came to town later and not with the rest of the research group

Carlos really killed God with gasoline and a flare gun when It was helpless and pinned. Darryl really looses faith in God when that faith is corroborated by fact and the truth can never be as real as the fantasy. Nil and Darryl really don’t work as a couple blue they just don’t have comparable word views and Darryl winds up wth the childhood best friend he shares a life and community with. Nil hooking up with Kareem would create perfect symmetry of scientist and radio host, so they clearly won’t work because it not their story its just one their would parallel, but her trying for a Cecil stand in works thematically due to all that Cecil represents within this story and Kareem is closer to Nils world view as a acts as the rational outsider to Cecil’s world view in the podcast

Hey, hey. invisible food and how you may or may not be eating anything, about how devouring is about becoming full, finding nutrients and fulling your body and taking care of yourself. you are flesh and you take in solid sunshine to be able to move and live and choosing to take the risk of starving yourself, of putting nothing in your body when it needs something, hearing your stomach growling and contracting around imaginary food who’s taste you made up, because it would ruin the fun to find out if you were actually taking care of yourself. Jon Peters constantly insisting that he is a farmer because he is unsure if he actually is a farmer, how he lives in fear and shame that his identity, the identity passed down from his father, built with the brother he lost to a distant war, is actually a lie, that he failed at what he was supposed to do because of the facts of his environment and how he decided to make up a story, spin a fantasy rather than admit the truth. how Nightvale eats empty air and no one is willing to admit the truth of their hunger because nightvale is a town of lies, secrets and stories

contrasting that with the flesh and weight of the smiling god. how for all its lofty thoughts and belief at the end of the day its just blood and crunching teeth. what seems like a lie, a fantasy, a story is really just plain naked truth, the blood and sweat and bile that we are, how we are just lumps of grey matter draped in bone and at the end of the day we die and that Charlie Bair who wanted his ghost license so he could continue on after death, Charlie Bair who will one day pay 10000$ to have his brain scooped out and turned into a cyborg slave of the smiling god, how bodies are just parts, how his fear of death turned to eternal pain. the smiling god devours. you are food. you will die

a science that chooses lies and fantasy and a religion that chooses facts and flesh

there is no one with out the other

Kevin and Darryl and Kasper and church being a business that can’t feel like a business to all but those in charge. a cybernetics company and a church that looks like a cheap office building

i am an unrepentant jeredrew enjoyer. i think they would make the silliest bffs possible. that lucky-slice art was soooo special to me. andrew just, of course, immediately hates kevin and jean and doesn’t trust their intentions. especially because of how they meet which i don’t know if we need to get into now... the feeling is very mutual though (and kevin is salty because in his last year of college he tried to have andrew recruited to the foxes and andrew ignored the hell out of him and followed jeremy to USC instead). the antics and dynamics are very very fun to write. jean compares what andrew is to jeremy as what neil is to kevin at one point and kevin is scandalized.

Here is part 2 of the podcast reap with Josh Sussman. 

Jenna asked Josh if he has a favorite memory from the show. Josh said being able to go to the Golden Globes with the cast. He said season 1 was a very special time going from obscurity of not knowing to going to the SAG awards. He had fun during Toxic. The aftermath sucks but filming it was fun. He mentioned going to an event for GLAAD after the episode. He saw Ryan at the event and Ryan said hello controversy and you should have seen what I cut out. Josh liked doing interviews and doing scenes with Rachel.

Josh starts talking about a prank that some of the cast pulled on him. Someone left a sticky note on his trailer that said I really looking forward to our scene and had al lip stick kiss on it and it was signed from Lea. It never occurred to him that it was not from Lea. Jenna was losing it as Josh told the story. Jenna said she is trying to remember who did it. Kevin said he knew who left the kiss on the note. Josh said it was Amber. He found this out years later. He doesn't remember where he heard it. He said he was just thinking oh, he didn't know if Lea liked him or had a crush on him or was just being friendly. He then went up to Lea and said he got her note. She has no idea what they are talking about and is waiting for a punchline. The last time they worked together he told her a joke so she thinks this is another one of his corny puns. So he pulled the note out of his pocket and handed it to her. She looks at it and reads it. She doesn't say anything and walked away. He then realized it was a prank. Was the prank was on Josh or was it on Lea. Kevin and Jenna said it was a two for one. Kevin said he thinks Amber left the kiss mark but didn't write the letter. (If Amber was a part of it then Chris was probably in on it.) They said they would do some digging and find out for Josh. Jenna said it's really nice to reminisce like this. Josh said he loves that it is on Disney+ and so accessible.

Jenna asked the question they ask everyone at the end of the interviews. What feeling does Glee leave you with? Josh said it has changed and it's an evolving thing. It goes from so much happiness but there was a time when he felt a lot of sadness. He pulled up a picture on his phone that he feels like summed up his Glee experience so well. It's a pic from the Golden Globes. He's at the coolest party in the world but he is very much on the outside. He was so happy to be there. There was elements of not feeling included but as the years went by he has come to the understanding that it's not personal. The main cast was together everyday doing rehears singing and dancing. They were a part of a close knit thing. It's not so much that he's not included it's just an extra special thing for you guys. At the time it could feel actual high school with cliques. He didn't feel like he fit in. People say things still and it gets to him but overall he still gets to have amazing experiences like the convention in Liverpool last year. In season 4 episode 2 he gets beaten up with a wooden umbrella. As he is getting beaten up Brittany say leave me alone JBI. Sometimes if he posts people will comment leave me alone JBI. He thinks okay maybe they were just quoting a line but other times he feels like they hate him. They will comment on something that doesn't have to do with anything. That was his least favorite scene because he did get hurt. He was bruised and bled. People will also comment oh I love when he got beat up. He said they know it gets under his skin. He had no idea if he would be on the podcast and it feels so meaningful to be included. It makes him so happy and it raises good feelings. He is beyond grateful to be doing the podcast with Kevin and Jenna. Kevin said they appreciate him being there. He said he wishes looking back if they could have done more to make him and Max feel more included. He thinks its important for Josh to share his experience. Josh said everyone on the show as very nice. Kevin joked that he can say Jenna is mean. Jenna joked that she is a bitch. She then said all joking aside part of the podcast is that they hope it can be healing for people like it is healing for them in many ways. She echoed what Kevin adding she wished they could have been a place where they could have done more but they weren't there not make excuses for any of it. She said she thinks that even within their circle they felt like their were cliques and that they were left out of things. There were people on the covers of things or were included in things that others were not. She said it's hard to not take that personal. It's hard to not think I'm not enough, doing enough, I'm not the main one. It definitely gets to especially when you are around it all the time and when it's what you live and breathe. It's just inevitable. She said in a way they were trauma bonded. Kevin said you latch on to those people that can understand this very specific and weird experience. Josh said he remembered during the 10th anniversary pictures were posted and he was in two of them and not tagged in them. It made him feel invisible. He knows social media is so silly. He feels like one of the group but sometimes he doesn't and wonders why not. It said its so silly if you are paying attention to who follows who. Jenna said it's inevitable in our day and age. That's your feeling and your honest and real and yours. That's what makes them true. She said she hopes he feels included and that Glee couldn't have happened without all of us and you. She said she hopes they can lift him up and give you those better memories and good feelings. She said she has plenty of shitty feelings about the show but she has many more good that it outweighs those feelings. Josh said during quarantine he rewatched Glee. He was reminded that the show is really good. Josh said he prides himself on being a positive person and felt like he wasn't being very positive. He said one of the biggest sadness's for him was the 2009 episode. Everyone was back but him. He said he didn't know why he wasn't asked back. Maybe the character was too creepy.  Kevin said how do you not take that personal. Jenna said it's hurtful. Overall it was an amazing experience.  Jenna said it is fun to rewatch as a viewer versus a cast member and being able to appreciate the performances that everybody gave that they get to see or experience when they were on set. She said Josh is one of those. To watch the satire and acknowledge the satire it is and watch Josh in his element. Kevin said he really went for it and to watch an actor be put in positions like having to be naked across from Jane Lynch is not an easy think to do and regardless of what the assholes online say to you, you smashed it and did an incredible job. That's all you can control. That's all you can do. do the best at your job and he did that over and over again.

Josh wanted to get it out there that the butt sweat is not his butt sweat. It was special effects. Kevin said people need to know that none of them are their characters. They look like their characters but none of them are these actual characters. They are hired to play characters. There are props and teams to take care of things like fake butt sweat. So leave him alone. Jenna thanked him for being honest and sharing his experiences. She said she hopes she runs into him again at their favorite place. Kevin said being in Liverpool last year with Josh was a great and special experience. If any of those people are listening they were the nicest bunch of people they could have spent time with that weekend. Josh said it was the highlight of his 2022. Jenna said she was jealous and Kevin said you were having a baby. She then got sidetracked and mentioned their was a ladybug. It's good luck. They thanked Josh again.

Jenna said she hopes that you guys appreciated his honesty as much as they did. It makes her almost sad to think that he felt like he was on the outside but grateful he was able to share his peace and his experience. Kevin said when you get on a show that will be watched by people it is a double edged sword. It is great to be a part of something being enjoyed by millions of people around the world but you will also run into a small portion of people who are terrible and say crazy crazy things to you online. That is never okay. Josh is one of the sweetest and talented people. Just remember that the people you are watching on screen are real humans with real feelings and just because they are playing a character you might not like doesn't mean that it cannot feel personal when you attack them. They thanked him again and sent big love to him.

Imagine with me for a moment, your childhood. Perhaps it wasn’t what you would have liked, perhaps it was, but whatever childhood you had, you dreamed. You had imagination. It’s one of the wonders of the human mind to think outside of the world of thought.

John Muir (1838-1914), a Scottish naturalist who explored and wrote about many of America’s national parks, said this:

“The power of imagination, makes us infinite.”

Kevin Hearne, a Canadian fiction author, said this in one of his novels, Hounded (2011):

“The universe is exactly the size that your soul can encompass. Some people live in incredibly small worlds, and some live in a world of infinite possibility.”

Why then, do we box up our imagination somewhere between being a child and being an adult? Even Albert Einstein (1879-1955) stressed the importance of imagination,

"Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand."

At some point we lose imagination if we’re not careful. But what happens if you find it again, somewhere down the line? Is it the same as it was? Or does it evolve and become something different from where you left it?

Being forced to box imagination can do odd things when it’s let loose again. And blended with the right ingredients, it can bend reality, even break it, and completely shift your views and ways of life. Occasionally, this is called trauma. Fear takes over parts of the mind it deems “un-necessary” for survival and reroutes that energy elsewhere. Left alone, this creates permanent marks in the mind.

I am one of those marks in the boys mind.

I need you to understand something, the boy is not insane, or unsafe, or completely mad. No, he’s actually more along the lines of “harmless” and his mind is simply different than the larger portion of society.

What the boy is officially diagnosed with is called Borderline Personality Disorder, or BPD. The details of BPD and symptoms are far too in-depth to go into here, so I’ll simply note the most relevant part.

BPD is a disorder that makes it incredibly difficult for a person to express, understand, and process emotions. This can effect people in a wide variety of ways (which is to be expected) but in the case of the boy, his imagination being taken by fear, blended with BPD suppressing emotions, along with a cohort of other mental and emotional disorders, resulted in the breaking of his mind into roughly 16 parts.

These parts have names, experiences, personalities, talents, and preferences that differ greatly from each other. Perhaps most frustratingly is that those parts are cut off from each other for the majority of time. Yet it creates an odd… diversity in experiences and perspectives on the world.

Imagination paired with the mind’s instinctual desire to protect itself (and an array of other complex factors), is what gave me and my friends life. It only makes sense therefore that I’m perpetually fascinated by the idea.

At the end of Minecraft, when the final battle is completed, a written conversation between two unnamed beings takes place. They challenge the readers understanding of reality and probe the extent of their imagination. They talk of profound, almost otherworldly, concepts and ideas. One of the final lines in that conversation is directed straight at the reader.

“And the universe said, you are the universe tasting itself, talking to itself, reading its own code.” “And the universe said, I love you, because you are love.”

Imagination is important. Imagination is crucial. Imagination is the substance that gives life to a world of grey.

Imagination saved the boys life.

Yesterday I rightfully tore into Burger King for using AI just because it could. The chain is crowdsourcing customer input to create three new limited edition Whoppers, and leaning on AI to run and play with it. OK, that’s nice, I suppose, but I am not sure it is going to be enough to propel them past Wendy’s into second place in the burger wars.

And never mind the subtle irony of the result being three standardized items, at a place that prides itself on customization. Or would the winning concoctions merely be suggestions, a starting point to a new Whopper experience?

I think you can understand my lack of enthusiasm.

But I also discovered yesterday that Avocados From Mexico is also using AI, but this time to generate guacamole recipes with its AI tool. This sounds much more user friendly to me, not to mention instantly accessible. Since I rather like making a little homemade guac, I’m always open to new ways of doing an old thing.
