Random Reviews: The Million Eyes of Sumuru

A camptastic messterpiece knocking off everything from James Bond to Adam West-Batman. And it makes sense, since star Shirley Eaton hails from Goldfinger while George Nader and Frankie Avalon have a kind of buddy-cop, Adam West/Burt Ward vibe.
It’s a shame Sumuru’s army of skimpy, man-hating women-warriors can’t resist the charms of Nader and Avalon, two scene-chewing schmucks doing their best Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis impressions.
And it’s too bad they don’t make movies like this any more — self-aware and 75 minutes long.

til that, although children's books seem to love sticking Merlin or Morgan (apparently usually both! as is appropriate!) into their stories when they need A Magician, there are... slim pickings indeed...? when it comes to actual Arthur legends for (little) kids?
#this is an appeal for recs if anyone sees it who has some#but mostly it's a... what do we have. the two books called King Arthur + The Knights Of The Round Table both from the 50s?#and then I think for more than ten seconds and am like okay yes I guess our central themes are adultery and incest this sort of is a trick#and I am going to bet I am totally SOL if I want a child-level retelling that centers the women to any degree aren't I#because you truly can't elide any of that for the women#and while like I do think my introduction (Mists Of Avalon at eight) WAS the right way to introduce this myth#a) my kid is four and b) while I sure won't stop her I do think I'll draw the line at actually giving her that book certainly pre-teenage#but like something??#Tracey Mayhew maybe??? says google

Avalon Hill's "B-1 Nuclear Bomber" for the Heath/Zenith computer
Reviewing Avalon Hill's "B-1 Nuclear Bomber" from a deep philosophical perspective requires an exploration beyond its gameplay as a flight simulation and into the broader existential, ethical, and political implications it presents.
1. The Ethics of Nuclear Warfare and Deterrence: "B-1 Nuclear Bomber" places players in the cockpit of a B-1 bomber during the Cold War, tasked with penetrating Soviet airspace to drop a nuclear bomb. This scenario invites players to confront the profound ethical implications of nuclear warfare. Philosophically, it echoes the moral dilemmas associated with the use of atomic weapons and the doctrine of nuclear deterrence. The game raises questions about the justifiability of using or threatening to use nuclear weapons, the concept of mutually assured destruction, and the moral responsibility of individuals (in this case, the player) within a military structure that can lead to mass destruction.
2. The Dehumanization of War Through Technology: The game's focus on operating a nuclear bomber can be seen as a commentary on the dehumanization of modern warfare, where technology distances the individual from the direct consequences of their actions. Philosophically, this aspect of the game prompts reflection on the ethical implications of conducting war at a remove, where the human cost of actions becomes abstracted through the lens of technology, raising questions about the disconnection between decision-makers (or players) and the human lives affected by those decisions.
3. The Concept of Free Will in a Structured System: While players have control over the bomber and its mission, their actions are within the constraints of the game's programming and the military scenario it simulates. This dynamic can be interpreted through the lens of free will and determinism. The game becomes a metaphor for the tension between individual agency and the deterministic nature of structured systems (in this case, military and political systems), reflecting on how much autonomy individuals truly have within such systems.
4. The Psychological Impact of Simulated Violence: Playing a game that simulates the dropping of a nuclear bomb invites analysis of the psychological impact of engaging with simulated violence. Philosophically, this raises questions about the desensitization to violence through media and games, the moral ramifications of simulating acts of extreme violence, and the blurring of lines between entertainment and the grave realities of war.
5. Political Propaganda and Ideological Conditioning: Set against the backdrop of the Cold War, "B-1 Nuclear Bomber" can also be interpreted as a product of its time, reflecting the ideological biases and political propaganda of the era. It invites players to critically examine the role of games in shaping political and ideological narratives, and to consider the extent to which entertainment reflects or reinforces prevailing geopolitical views.
6. The Existential Fear of Annihilation and Human Survival: Finally, the game touches on the broader theme of existential fear associated with nuclear annihilation. The Cold War era was marked by a pervasive fear of global nuclear war, and the game encapsulates this existential anxiety. Philosophically, it prompts reflection on the human condition in the nuclear age, the existential threat posed by human technological advancement, and the moral imperative to manage and mitigate risks that threaten the survival of humanity.
In conclusion, Avalon Hill's "B-1 Nuclear Bomber" is more than a flight simulation game; it serves as a medium for philosophical exploration. It engages players with themes such as the ethics of nuclear warfare, the dehumanization of war through technology, free will within structured systems, the psychological impact of simulated violence, political propaganda, and the existential fear of annihilation. Through its gameplay, "B-1 Nuclear Bomber" provides a platform for players to engage with deep and complex ethical, psychological, and existential questions.

replaying book 2 for fanfic purposes.
#red carpet diaries#starting w book 2 bc i kinda dont give a shit about book 1? at least for my fic purposes#bc Thomas is barely in it & tbh the inclusion of Avalon would only change book 1 slightly#like he has a role in Tender Nothings but outside of set he doesnt spend much time w the mc or the other characters#mayhaps at some point i'll rewrite the Joshua Park chapter to include Avalon but that's the biggest difference. is that Avalon would b there

"Group anime" is in 15 minutes. You wouldn't want to be late, would you? I know your "friends" wouldn't want you to be. ...Or would they? You never know who the people you love truly are. Maybe they're plotting against you.

Fanbinding: Settle Our Bones by @motleyfam, including fics by @batmoniker & justbeyondstars

A hurt/comfort focused series where Jason never dies, but the Waynes’ weird neighbor kid gets strung along for the ride all the same. Tim joins the family early & finds a haven in Wayne Manor.
Including a cover page by @they-reap-what-we-sow

This was my bind for @after-avalon for the 2024 Renegade Exchange! I got introduced to this fic series through their fic choices, and I enjoyed it immensely. Technically, they only asked for the first fic (the 5 times & 1) but uh... I enjoyed stuff enough my completionist heart would not allow me to only do a single fic from the series. so here is the set!

Beyond the Robin color scheme, I really wanted to lean into the Wayne manor motif. During the initial design process I struck out a bit on good interior images, so I fell back on a wrought iron motif. That had also inspired me to attempt a new craft on the cover, but plan A & B both failed to hack it for my timeline, so I hand-painted the cover instead.

I made a whole bunch of different page styles for this series because it's a whole anthology.

Edges of the text were inked black, waxed, & polished. Endpapers from @renato-crepaldi, waxed & burnished. Bookcloth is cranberry colibri. Endbands sewn with Japanese size 9 silk thread.
#fanbinding#bookbinding#celestial sphere press#dcu#batfam#tim drake#jason todd#i am a bit bummed the new idea didn't pan out. but it saved me a lot of labor...#renegade exchange 2024#the copper wire i used for Atlas was SUPPOSED to be soldered together for a gate design set in the cover

tell me more about classic filk i know a few songs but never got deep into it
Heck YEAH
"Filk" is music (often but not always folk music-style, often but not always song parodies to the tune of famous pre-existing songs) about sci-fi, fantasy, and other fannish topics. Filk circles are popular events at science fiction conventions, and that's really where the genre started. The word "filk" actually arose from a typo in a convention program once, and people just rolled with it ever since!
Some of the most iconic albums in the filk world are the anthology albums "Minus Ten And Counting" (songs about space exploration and the real-life space program), "Carmen Miranda's Ghost" (songs about sci-fi space shenanigans and space ghosts), and "Finity's End: Songs of the Station Trade" (songs set in the world of CJ Cherryh's Alliance-Union novels, and my personal favorite. I've never read any of CJ Cherryh's books, but these songs paint such a vivid world.) "Space Heroes and Other Fools" is another big one, it's more hit-or-miss for me but it's iconic. Other really good and foundational ones are "Divine Intervention" by Julia Ecklar, "Avalon is Risen" by Leslie Fish, and "We Are Who We Are" by Vixy & Tony.
I lean more towards sci-fi and space than fantasy, but fantasy and paganism are huuuugely popular filk topics too.
Some of the most popular names to look into include Leslie Fish (intensely prolific, barely a fraction of her work is on any streaming or music service), Julia Ecklar (famous for her "ose," the filk-world word for sad songs - because they're "ose, more-ose, and even more-ose), Juanita Coulson, Kristoph Klover, Vic Tyler (who just recently died :( rest in peace), Duane Elms, Kathy Mar, Bob Kanefsky, Alexander James (trans, with lots of filk under his previous name as well), Vixy & Tony, and Seanan McGuire. (I like Seanan McGuire's filk music better than her books, hah.) Some other great ones include Cat Faber (most acapella), Astrisoni, The PDX Broadsides, Kari Maaren, and Sassafrass (also mostly acapella. Includes Ada Palmer). Heather Dale, Tom Lehrer, and Jonathan Coulton are kind of honorary filkers too haha.
The best place to get the ones from 80s and 90s cassettes are on the Internet Archive or Youtube; a few filkers who are more currently active have their stuff on Bandcamp.
And I'll leave you with a few of my Favorite Ever filk songs:
"Sam Jones" by CJ Cherryh and Leslie Fish
"Pushin' the Speed of Light" by Julia Ecklar and Anne Prather
"Chickasaw Mountain" by Leslie Fish
"Fire in the Sky" by Jordan Kare
"The Phoenix" by Julia Ecklar
"Freedom of the Snow" by Leslie Fish
"Burn it Down" by Vixy & Tony
"Hope Eyrie" by Leslie Fish, or this Minus Ten And Counting version
"Rocket Rider's Prayer" by Kristoph Klover, Ernie Mansfield, and Cecilia Eng
"Dawson's Christian" by Duane Elms, performed by Vic Tyler or Vixy & Tony
"Somebody Will" by Sassafrass
"Chances & Choices & Fortunes & Fates" by Astrisoni
... my tastes lean sentimental and ose but I swear there's a lot of very funny filk out there too
"Never Set the Cat on Fire" by Frank Hayes (a famous one)
"Banned From Argo" by Leslie Fish (an INFAMOUS one)
"Don't Push That Button" by Duane Elms and Larry Warner
"No More SF Cons" by Juanita Coulson
"One More Ose Song" by B. J. Willinger
everything Bob Kanefsky writes

pirate au (more free to use concepts because my brain did a thing.)
Version A
Arthur is a governor and Merlin is Blackbeard. Merlin is just a menace and Arthur can't ever manage to catch him. One day, he has him cornered but they end up just the two of them on a lone island. Arthur would definitely die if Merlin wasn't there to get him through and Merlin needs Arthur to get off the island. Merlin has hidden rum everywhere but doesn't even drink. He also has books about herbs with him and keeps insulting Arthur to his face.
Arthur very slowly falls in love with the oblivious, obnoxious ten year legend- who is (2 y) younger than Arthur?!?!?!
Version B: reincarnation
Merlin is a constantly drunk sailor (still alive since Camelot), Long white beard, gets hired often by random pirates or government people, is an annoyance to all but somehow gets loads of work done despite just laying around and insulting people.
Arthur is setting sail for the first time to find the hidden island Avalon, a magic island that no one truly believes in anymore. But the person who's going to find it is said to be THE King Arthur, destined King of Albion. He who finds the sword Excalibur will have the right to take the throne.
Merlin hates him at first, already tired of people pretending to be reincarnated Arthur... But slowly he begins to see the resemblence. Once he sees Arthur defending the poor and leading pirates like knights, he reveals himself to be THE Merlin.
