one of these days I will fully articulate an essay on the costume design in the terror (for crozier specifically because I have so many brainworms about it) but it is not this day
#bro I just think it's super neat that his style of dress is distinctly stuff from about 10 even 20 years before the expedition set sail#and how that's a deliberate choice for the character because he's a broke ass bitch and wouldn't be able to afford new shit!!!!#it really speaks to his practicality!!! a lot of his stuff is mended!!! his shirt is more of an 1830's style than an 1840's style#(re: jfj's shirt that he wears when he's dying is more typical of a shirt made in the 1840's with that big pleated plaquet- vs crozier with#his shirt with a cut-out curved collar is more distinctively 1830's maybe even earlier)#also the stuff he was wearing in the sophia flashback was way more REGENCY than victorian#sorry. infinite brainworms about this all the time and always#and I love it now when costume designers get this kind of shit RIGHT and that you can actually SEE it)#francis crozier#the terror

I feel like I need to get more into regency clothing
#it’s not that I’m Not into regency clothing it’s just not my main period#and generally if I’m going to spend money on historical clothing it will be for reenactment stuff#but the thing is regency clothing is objectively more popular and accessible (comparatively)#I mean the truth is that quality historical clothing is almost always handmade and therefore always more expensive#but there’s comparatively More people into regency fashion than late 18th century so there are more options#also this is an observation only I would make but regency clothing is like marginally more socially acceptable to wear in public#idk. I think in general it’s perceived as more ‘fashionable’ than georgian clothing because it appeals more to a modern eye#so while it’s not common it’s comparatively Less Weird idk#sort of makes me sad but I also agree that it is a very universally appealing fashion period#at least in terms of menswear I’m not much of a fan of regency womenswear past the 1790s#but idk I feel like. I want to dress in ways that make me feel happy and confident in my everyday life#and while I’m not Unhappy yeah it is still sort of a dream of mine to effectively have a ‘historybounding wardrobe’#and I feel like regency fashion is the gateway#maybe I’ll make some moves toward that this year#mine

Cressida Cowper being so excited by the prospect of five thousand pounds and making all these plans of using it to fund herself is so strange, because that money would be NOTHING to the nobility if it's all they had to live off. We're talking £200 or £250 interest a year.
In Pride and Prejudice that's the same as what the Bennets will have when Mr Bennet dies - the paltry amount that will send them into genteel poverty and makes the need for the daughters to marry so urgent.
It's HALF what the Dashwood women have when they're struggling to get by in Sense and Sensibility, and can only afford the most basic of servants and live off a reduced rent in a cottage owned by a distant cousin. Their mother can't even go out to dinners often because they don't have the money to reciprocate the gesture!
Also in Sense and Sensibility it's the amount of income the living Colonel Brandon offers to Edward Ferrars produces - which was considered not enough for him and Lucy to live on.
I mean as a dowry it's not bad for someone in the middle or lower rungs of the gentry, but for NOBILITY??? And let alone a sole income source. With that sort of money Cressida either is being completely delusional that she wouldn't have to marry, or she better rent a room off a respectable woman (a house of her own would be too much - not to mention the difficulties of an unmarried young woman trying to legally sign an agreement), learn how to sew her own clothes, cook, and clean reaaaally fast.
#not to be nitpicky about money in an incredibly fictionalised and historically inaccurate show about the regency#which plays hard and fast with the rules of society as well as the rule of law (omg the title inheritance stuff is wild)#but just make it ten thousand pounds and suddenly Cressida's hopes are believable????#I get her desperate 'anything is better than being a broodmare for this old guy' but why portray it as the solution to all her problems???#It's just trading them for an also very drastic set of different problems and the characters and show seem COMPLETELY unaware#bridgerton#bridgerton spoilers#bridgerton season 3#bridgerton netflix#bridgerton s3#cressida cowper#also complete side note - the eight Bridgerton children is NOT a weirdly large family in that era at all and over the span of 18 years????#bruh#what is Cressida's mother on about

OK! here's the general idea for this Nordegrim Ghosts AU that has been haunting me:
CW FOR MENTIONS OF DEATH, ATTEMPTED MURDER, AND ALSO A TINY BIT SUGGESTIVE (just a tiny bit though)
Stacey, Scott, and Lawrence inherit this big house from a distant great aunt they have never met after she passed of old age. Scott is in debt so he cant take the house like he was supposed to, and Lawrence wants nothing to do with it, so Stacey gets it instead.
It’s perfect though cause her and Neil, who is also her husband now here, were planning to move houses anyways and were struggling to find a good place. Also since the house is super big, they thought about opening a hotel at one point once the house is all fixed up.
What they don't know is that the house is haunted. the ghosts in question are:
Knives Chau: A teenage girl from the 1950s who was a fan of rock n' roll that got pushed down the stairs by a jealous classmate (not Tamara btw that was her gf) at a party
Julie Powers (IDK her married last name yet): An Edwardian women who got pushed out the window by her husband (who is Joseph in this AU btw)
Stephen Stills: A folk singer from the mid 60s who dies in a fire (people confused him with the other Stephen Stills all the time)
Gideon Graves: A music producer from the late 60s early 70s who was poisoned by a rival producer
Lucas Lee: A Victorian lumber guy who was crushed by a wooden beam during the construction of the houses renovation
Todd Ingram: A 90s Rockstar who died while having sex with his bands drummer (which like in the comic, was also cheating on his girlfriend and it is still Lynette and Envy)
Lisa Miller: A somewhat famous 1930s actress who died while filming a scene
Matthew Patel: An early 19th century poet who died in a duel that was orchestrated by a good friend of his
Roxie Richter(she has no last name in this au btw, putting it here cause I put everyone elses last names here): A Viking who was struck by lighting
Ken and Kyle Katayanagi : Inventors/mechanics from the late 19th century who died in a car explosion along with their dog (who is a dog version of robot 0-1 btw). They live in the carriage house as its far more peaceful than the main house
The ghosts overhear the hotel idea when Stacey and Neil are talking about it and they are not too pleased with it. So they try to haunt them so they'll leave, but ultimately fail.
Then either Gideon or Todd, come across Stacey leaning out the window and decide to push her in an another attempt to get them to leave which in turn, almost kills her. Because of this, now Stacey can see ghosts and forms a close friendship with them. Neil, like Mike and I assume Jay in bbc and cbs ghosts respectively, will have a collage of what they all look like since he cannot see them.
So yeah that's my idea so far! I’m still tweaking things but I’m happy with this rn. I’ll definitely make art for it at some point (and if people want it, an ask blog). Feel free to also suggest some ideas for this au if you have any :]
#also btw it takes place on the east coast cause why not make some more changes#its mostly inspired by bbc ghosts cause thats the only one ive seen and i adore that show to pieces#because of this fact decided to check out who the ghosts are in cbs ghosts and some of the time periods are similar to the ones ive picked#some of the charcters also die and are in the roles of some canon characters (ex. Julie and Matthew) but i did essentially tweak some other#and also added in new time periods for it to be unique#this is a new niche au to add to the pile#I’ve kinda done it once before with ST but only managed to make byler capvers stuff along with toxic regency ghost boyfriends stonathan#scott pilgrim#scott pilgrim comic#scott pilgrim takes off#stacey pilgrim#young neil#neil nordegraf#knives chau#julie powers#stephen stills scott pilgrim#gideon graves#lucas lee#todd ingram#lisa miller#matthew patel#roxie richter#ken katayanagi#kyle katayanagi#nordegrim#cw mention of death#cw attempted murder#adding those two tags in cause while i mention them briefly it still could be trigging for someone#lmk if I should add the cw suggestive tag#cause I’m unsure since it is like one word compared to death and attempted murder

its so funny when people tell me stuff like "wow youre so good at drawing clothes" or "how do you come up with different outfits for your ocs i could never" because the truth is that there's a very limited pool of aesthetics/styles/elements that i like to draw and i just mix and match them as needed. if i had to draw anything outside of that i would wither away and die
#💌 personal#its mostly regency/victorian/edwardian fashion#and also anything inspired by it#like lolita/ouji stuff#i dumped all of that into lysander's design#at józia's a bit too tho lots of her casual outfits take more inspo from the 1920s#honestly any clothes pre ww2 ill have fun#and any fantasy variants of those#also hanfu#i LOVE drawing hanfu#but ask me to draw an outfit in a more modern style and ill DIE#i simply cant do it sorry </3

I just watched Austentatious: The Queer Eye for the Regency Guy and it truly has everything. A man with the foulest walk who has a hyperfixation on Napoleon. A homosexual cousin. A woman whose father has been “dead” for seven years despite being alive up in the study the whole time. A murderous butler who’s gaslighting everyone. Saucy Sally’s Sausage Shop where all of the actors broke and one was in literal tears over the sexual innuendos. Dream sequence hats. The Chekov reference not being understood and that being baked into the sister’s character. Love wins. A marriage between two freaks who sat next to each other every day at Sunday (everyday) school who both love Napoleon. I’m obsessed.
#it’s so funny#also Lord Harlowe mistaking his sister for his daughter was one of the first clips I saw of it that got my attention#the scene with Millicent and her mother realizing her father was alive had me rolling#I love improv stuff where the actors break though#everytime they broke I was dying#especially Antony when Francis exclaims ‘Moscow!’ like what did he expect#and when Antony claims he brought a hat back from the dream world because he accidentally ended the dream sequence with the hat#but Saucy Sally really takes the cake for putting Francis’ actor in tears#I do not regret spending two hours of my life watching this it was so enjoyable#austentatious#a queer eye for a regency guy

I'd love to know more about Emma in your Regency AU, given the fact she was in the description of it
I don't talk about Emma nearly enough! In the Regency AU she and Arthur are engaged of course, but it's more of a convenience thing rather than a romantic pursuit. Emma's family, headed by Jan, is part of the Nederland's Patriciaat. They're kind of like unofficial nobility, they have wealth and influence, but they lack a title. The Peeters family got this position as successful merchants- the problem is that by 1810, the French have put that in jeopardy. Jan had been doing business in England for a number of years because of the war, but the French takeover made it difficult for him to exercise any power and authority in the Netherlands, and messed with his business in the Indian Ocean to boot. Emma, therefore, becomes a means to an end: if she can marry a member of the English nobility, their family will have some attachment to "truly" noble blood and a money safety-net. The fact that it's Arthur, whose family is also involved in maritime trade and who has influence in the British navy makes their situation even better.
Emma has always known what her role was going to be, and for the most part she'd accepted that. She's bubbly, inviting, good at parties. She's a queen of society, and she knows it. She also understands that securing that kind of life is the end of the bargain she gets from marrying Arthur. That's not to say that she never wanted a loving marriage, but more so that she spent years telling herself it wasn't worth waiting for one, especially when Jan had his own interests to look after. If Arthur wasn't infatuated with Francis, it's likely they might have had an actual loving marriage. She doesn't exactly know it's Francis at first, but she gathers pretty quickly that Arthur's heart is in another place that he can't present to society. She's at least got the consolation that she'll have Molly's company and Arthur will be gone for long stretches of time at sea.
What shakes this "perfect" arrangement up is Antonio. He makes his way to England through Joao, as a favor to his own fiancee, Anneliese. He was also a family friend to Lovino and Feliciano, giving him someone else to stick around for. Anneliese and Antonio are also headed toward a marriage of convenience, that is until Antonio sets eyes on Emma. The two start having a bit of a flirtation back and forth, especially as they start acting as "chaperones" for Molly and Lovino. It gets serious, and it's probably one of the first relationships Emma has ever gotten any emotional fulfilment out of aside from Molly, Lovino, and her younger brother, Alexander. It really forces her to reckon with whether or not she's willing to give up the prospect of having status for a future in which she's happy and fulfilled. She sort of overcorrects, and ends up projecting onto Molly, almost fucking up her relationship in the process as well. In the end, she really ends up kind of being a matchmaker around the ton, which in turn rehabilitates some of her views on her own love life and forces her to work with Antonio even more.
All in all, if I ever actually wrote this fic (maybe someday when I'm not booked up with an internship!), Emma would 100% be one of the more central characters. She's the one whose arc I really have the most thought out, and she's one of the strings that ties a lot of people together.
#ask#hetalia#regency au#hws belgium#hws spain#spabel#spabelg#hws netherlands#hws england#emma is an interesting lady#who is invested in other people's emotions a little more than she's invested in her own at times#she's a realist hidden behind a sociable veneer so a lot of people don't expect it out of her when she's sort of. resigned to some stuff#she's got ambitions but they're more for being socially acceptable than for being herself y'know?#i also just love her and molly's friendship a lot#but that's my own bias

I hate dating apps with a burning passion and you won't ever catch me using one BUT. I do miss flirting like crazy. Like, I don't even necessarily need to date or whatever, let's just text and be funny and cute for a bit during the day. Just for enrichment.
#Timeout Drafts#“this is called a friendship-” IT'S DIFFERENT#“this is just a casual whatever situationship-” IT'S DIFFERENT#i literally do mean just flirting. just that. not in a platonic way but also not in a relationship way#i mean flirting the way regency people would court each other (think Jane Austen flirt not Bridgerton flirt) (maybe a little Bridgerton but#ya know? does this make sense? i don't wanna get real butterflies and be all giddy and giggling and stressing over someone's son#flirting the way you'd flirt with random ppl on omeagle or over msn/skype#even if it gets nasty and stuff. don't actual make it a think ya know?#flirting the way two straight guys flirt with each other. that's the vibe.

Hi, and happy blorbo blursday! (as usual I am @writeblr-of-my-own). I am back and ready to get in the game! For today's question, imagine your characters were in a cartoon TV show (such as Total Drama, Adventure Time, Kim Possible etc). What would their signature outfit be? The one they will never change for the duration of the season, possibly of the whole show? What would be one bit they keep doing or their signature sentence?
Happy blorbo blursday!!
This would be very interesting to answer for B&W because all the characters have their circus outfits, so I'm not gonna do that bc it's boring.
In the dystopia WIP, I've always had a very clear image of what Cristover, Nester and Alexis's outfits look like. Especially Alexis. Their outfit appeared 100% complete in my brain and I never changed it bc it was perfect.
I once did character sheets for all the characters and, while none of them is fully coloured, most of them had a little sketch just to kinda study colours and shapes. And this was Alexis:

Some of the colours are kinda off and the yellow is supposed to be gold but this is the general idea. They're a ridiculously wealthy swordmaster living a life of hedonism and I think this really captures that vibe, especially when you add their facial expressions. They also always have amazing black and gold graphic-ish eyeliner.
Their outfit changes slightly throughout the story to include more red, to represent how they fall deeper and deeper in love with Veera and how this love gradually distances them from their old life (red is Veera's colour, her outfit also gains more gold elements).
If they had to keep the sane outfit throughout the whole "show", I have decided they would only change their outfit once. When they find out that Veera was secretly sent to assassinate them and is probably not even in love with them (she is), we see them venture out of their property for the first time. In this scene they're wearing nothing but red, no gold to be seen - they're not even wearing eyeliner.
Ok, to put this in simple terms, Alexis very vaguely represents "the rich" (together with Nester, the only other character who's main colour is a metallic tone), and Veera represents "the people", since she's the kinda-leader of the common people's revolt. In this scene, Alexis finally leaves their house (the bubble in which the wealthy live, out of touch with the world) and finds their way to a poorer part of Silver City (where Veera is from, they specifically find their way to the building the revolutionaries are using as headquarters) to finally see the real world and learn about Veera's cause. This kickstarts a redemption arc btw.
The colour-switching in a character duo also happens with Cris and Nester, but it means a very different thing and I've already written too much.
Anyway, here are some of the sketches for the other characters:

They are, in this order: Vi, Veo, Veta, and Veera. Veera's design has changed a bit since this was made, but the general shapes and colours are still correct.
As for bits that keep showing up, I guess it would be that everyone struggles to pronounce Vi's full name because of how long it is (it's Anastavius Greterssen). It's not even that hard, but he always pronounces it with his native accent (which is kinda nordic-sounding) and always writes it out in his native language's alphabet, which the other characters can't read. The only time anyone ever saw his name in the "normal" alphabet was his and Veta's marriage certificate, which they lost when they got exiled.
#i love talking about Alexis and Veera <3#they are my oc ship of all time#this whole thing started bc Viktor (Veo's twin brother) and Veera decided the best way to kill Alexis was to honeytrap them#Alexis is the one that owns the military btw#i've talked about them before i think#i also have stuff to say about other characters' designs but they're not as set in stone as Alexis#all their designs are based on a time period in fashion or a culture's tradicional wear#Alexis is regency btw#writing#my wips#writeblr#the dystopia wip#asks#blorbo blursday
