On Writing: More Than Tourists

Sometimes I look at a back cover blurb of yet another adventuring party off on a Grand Quest, and get the impression of a particularly violent group of ugly tourists. And I don’t mean in a physical attractiveness way. I’m talking about the stereotypical Tourist who’s Not From Around Here, and considers the locals quaint at best. (At worst, well, adventurers. Sword go shing, right when you were in the middle of breakfast or your morning pipe-smoke.)

Granted, adventurers are in it for the adventure, and readers often likewise; tales of strange places, exotic monsters, outrageous foreign customs. But sometimes place X is written as so strange and foreign you have to squint your eyes and think, “Wait, could people actually live like this? Long-term? Really?”

This actually threw me straight out of a Kindle sample of an otherwise-promising SF setup. The idea was that a few Marines were being woken up centuries in the future to defend a planet with... shall we say idealistic tendencies, where every person on the planet has installed AIs to enforce them. No drinking, no smoking, no swearing....

The thing that tossed me out of suspension of disbelief was the “no longer allowed to eat meat”.

...Um. No. Humans being humans, that’s not going to work. Physiologically, that’s not going to work. Humans are omnivores. And too many of us are riddled with allergies and food intolerances. Some people cannot, simply cannot, get enough protein from non-meat sources. And the really nasty thing about food intolerances? Some may be with you from a very young age, but a lot shows up later in life as you encounter more and more things your immune system may hiccup from.

Meaning a society like that, where it’s enforced by inescapable AIs that you can’t eat meat, is a society that will kill its own people. Deliberately. Continually. In a way their doctors would know was happening, because their medical science is supposed to be very advanced.

Said doctors, if they truly believed in peace, love, and the Hippocratic Oath as the writer implies, would be agitating to shut the AIs down. Not going on and on about how to tweak them to work “better”, as in “we should have them enforce laws against garish colors, too....”

Make wild and wacky societies for your characters to encounter, sure. But if you want them to have more depth than a sideshow, think about more than just what weirdness your heroes narrowly escape. Remember that these are supposed to be working cultures, which means the natives have to live in them.

not to sound like a boomer, but I need some people to learn how to write emails in a semi-professional (at the very least) format so you're not cold emailing a business/potential employer/any other stranger about formal matters in the exact same way you'd DM a close friend on instagram

the formality/language can loosen up in the email chain once you've established a rapport and you match the other person if they're being less formal, but please don't have the very first email you send a stranger be written in all lowercase ultra-casual sms slang with no greeting or signature and a billion emojis

again, back with the same agenda, husband! toji who lovingly watches you nurse your baby boy. he’s so smitten, heart swelling with love as he sees the little one desperately suck on your nipple. your breasts full of nourishing milk for the younger one. as he watches this little bonding moment between you and the little one, a small smirk creeps up his face. as much as he loves and is smitten by this, by nature he’s a cocky man. he isn’t a girl dad, a boy dad through and through. he slowly inches his finger towards your breast, purposely unlatching your nipple from the baby’s mouth. he likes to get a reaction out of everyone, he loves teasing, that’s his love language. he sees the baby squirm in your lap, whining in frustration, almost crying. he smiles at this, you turn to toji. “toji?” he’s propped up on his elbow, having fun with this. then he let’s the baby latch back again, by removing his finger, which is holding back the nipple from his little mouth. the baby happily latches back on, kicking his little legs in delight, giggling. “sorry, little guy” he smiles lovingly at his son nursing from you. then he looks up at you “sorry, mama” he holds your hand, rubbing his thumb, over your hand in circles, smiling slightly. this man is knee deep in love, oh god.

something i really appreciate about the locked tomb is that there are so many little details that make it clear tamsyn muir wanted you to have even more fun every time you re-read it. like throwaway lines or descriptions that become tragic or funny or foreboding only after you’ve read them before.

Nora saying Neil would have stayed at the Nest for Jean. Jean and Neil both hating Betsy on sight. Neil and Jean both being sold to a higher family like a commodity. Neil gently taking the phone from Jean's hands and saying'I've got him coach' to Wymack when Jean starts to panic. Neil asking Kevin if Jean was okay when Jeremy called. Jean wishing Neil had stayed just so someone could be with him during the harshest times of his life. Kevin being sure that Neil will be helped by Jean. Neil giving Jean time to get it together when the agents arrived. Neil protecting Jean from his abuser. Jean silently cleaning up Neil's wounds and speaking to him in french when no can hear them. Jean asking Neil to tell him that Riko is truly gone and Neil confirming without a moment of hesitation. Jean and Neil both automatically resorting to saying they're okay—I'm fine, there's nothing to talk about—whenever someone asks them. Neil originally being a backliner just like Jean. Neil telling Jean it's okay to take off the tattoo. Neil reminding Jean he's worth saving. Neil looking over his shoulder out of instinct thinking Jean would be there near him. Neil being Jean's what-if. The 3 to the other's 4. A broken promise. The misplaced forever partners.
