You know I'm thinking about it, and I don't know if we're really considering the impacts of Malleus' actions on the people who are asleep enough. Obviously they have a right to be pissed, and some likely will be pissed, but I'm thinking of other responses too.
For example—imagine you got a taste of everything that you wanted out of life. The ideal world, where everything is going as planned and nothing seems wrong. You're not sick, let's say. Or you have lost loved ones back. Or your stress is non-existent.
Then you get wrenched out of that. Turns out that entire world was nothing but a dream/illusion, and there is no way for you to ever get that back again. Would that not emotionally decimate some people? Especially those seeing lost loved ones again, or other severely impactful life events. Like not only would it cause fury, but the absolute despair that Malleus' actions can cause that can likely turn into long standing mental health crisis in some individuals is absolutely mind boggling.
He's doing this because he thinks he's giving everyone a gift, when really, he's setting them up for some of the lowest pits they can fall into.

Once again thinking about the connection between Duncan and the Grim Reaper. Imagine him, cloaked in black as he wonders the world searching for lost souls and claiming them as his own once their old life has ended and taking them for himself to sacrifice them in his war against the ancient evils. This great and valiant man with poison in his blood and the demon's song in his mind, a valiant knight slowing being eaten by the sickness he seeks to kill. A ghost who listens to the song at night and searching for warriors - for sacrifices - to give the blood the evil ones call for. Flee should you see him. Let the smell of his rotting mind ward you away and let not those cold steel gauntlets claim you. May the reaper find you before he does for the death will grant rest but a warden will send your soul to war as it dies.

I'm very much not at all of the mindset that Orym is going full dark but god I do think Orym as he is now would've been tempted by Lolth's circlet in a way Orym during EXU never was, not necessarily to use it himself but to at least have someone use it because giving in to darker powers can potentially give his friends the edge they need right now, he was the one holding everyone back from leaning into that kind of dark power not that long ago and now he's weighing things up and finding that having that power might be necessary

still rotating him in my mind like a kebab. But racetrack’s wardrobe is so everything to me. Once again may routh please let me interview you for an in-depth analysis on costume design for every newsies clothing (yes even swifty’s vest which is Atrocious. It’s So Bad.) Racetrack’s undershirt being two sizes too big for him is so important to me and his gaudy vests that he has to hitch up to his pants? There’s so much bravado that begins and ends with how he presents himself as larger than life in favor of the odds he’s presented through shape. Even the parts we can’t see (ie his suspenders, pocketwatch) are properly coordinated to his outfits which implies he takes care to notice for little details that are incessant to other characters clothing.

something about qbad mentioning how much horror he put red team thru every time purgatory gets brought up... something about how proud dapper was of him.
like this is just my late-night read but- it feels like guilt qbad is trying to twist into pride. he keeps needling away at it. “i killed them all, over and over and over again.” “they were hunted by a monster.”
it’s like- reassurance. like a nail he’s trying o beat into his head. he’s had SO much trouble with legitimately hurting his friends, despite making that vow all the way back when the eggs first went missing, despite all the tree talk and the promises to save the kids no matter what. He never faltered with elq, and that protected them. He keeps faltering now. Sometimes he doesnt remember the code, or cucurucho, or skeppy. But that doesnt matter, right? Because he’ll protect the eggs. He’ll be the monster. he is the monster. he can and he will protect them even as his seams start ripping and he keeps breaking further and further apart. even at his worst, he’ll do whatever he needs to protect the eggs.
he’ll be the monster. wont he?

Artyom (you've been telling me your thoughts, but please share with the class)
Artyom Metro, my beloved silly guy
He's just such a fascinating silent protagonist to me. He has so much character. He's also a rare flavor of Blorbo for me
Bonus doodle of his face based entirely on hc
