Thinking about Weird Barbie and how she's the very obviously queer outsider of the Barbie world, she straddles the lines between Barbie and the Real World. She's the most aware of the performative nature of it all. She supports Barbie while also gently mocking her panic at losing the hyperfeminine perfection. Her weird house is also home to the discontinued reject weird Barbies, the outcasts (including very gay earring Ken) who never fell into either the original matriarchy or the Kentriarchy brainwashing.

The other more classically heteronormative and beautiful Barbies both pity and fear her, and at first the narrative pities her as well. She's the vessel of girls going weird and crazy and feral on their dolls and that's amazing. Weird Barbie is aware of who she is and how the world sees her and she loves it. She's Weird Barbie and She Owns It.

@stonehenge-asexual and i have been refining our dead girl detectives theses like philosophers in the forum, and i think my interpretation is this:

charlotte would be feminine, but would not identify as femme

i've got a lot of thoughts about how butch and femme arent just physical presentation but also ways of interacting with the world and relationships and the queer community as a whole, and charlotte's femininity–like charles' masculinity–is a way of fitting in. she is one of the girls, until she can't be anymore. she finds the places that punk and femininity interact and thrives there (touched on a bit in hollis' post here), but i dont think the specific femme identity would be something that she would be drawn to

part of this is because of social role, physical protector vs emotional shelter, nuance and roles and all of that, but also. it would take a Lot to get charlotte to the point where she would actually choose to take on a title that says i'm here, i'm queer, and i know what that means for myself. presenting feminine and punk and loving edwina enough to go to hell for her doesn't mean that she would be prepared to face the reality of her queerness, much less what it means for her place in the world and the greater community.

Why is it still so hard for some people to grasp that pronouns ≠ gender? Someone going by they/them does not mean they're non-binary. Nor do she/her or he/him indicate a binary identity such as binary man or binary woman.

The most gender-conforming* cishet woman you know could go by he/him pronouns, and it would say nothing about his relationship to his gender identity. The same applies to a gender-conforming cishet man deciding to go by she/her pronouns.

Look me in the eyes when I say this: The sooner you learn that gender is far more nuanced and funky than some silly linguistic tool, the more relaxed and actually enjoyable your relationship with language will become. Why are we even "debating" (aka. arguing) about neopronouns or referring to an entire group of people as "they/thems", "she/theys", "he/theys", etc. in 2024?

PS: I know that for some people, their pronouns are part of how they define their gender. That, however, is not the point of this post. The point is that by default, there is no direct correlation between a certain pronoun and a certain gender. The possible combinations between the two are endless, which is why a conclusion that someone must be one based on the other is always false.

Based on the way the story has been written, especially following season 4, I do believe mike is likely gay atp. But “It’s not my fault you don’t like girls” still makes sense as projection if Mike is bi because lots of closeted bi teens are confused about their feelings, especially in the 80s where terms like “bisexual” wouldn’t have been as readily accessible to kids from Hawkins, Indiana.

Simply the fact that Mike likes boys/Will could make him worried that he’s gay and cause him to hyperfixate on the concept of not liking girls more often, especially if his feelings for El were waning, or if his feelings for Will were overwhelming, even if he did in fact have a crush on El at the start of the show. Nothing says being a closeted bi teen like bouncing back and forth between “I can’t be gay, I like girls” and “Oh no, I like boys, am I gay?”

I think there’s a common misconception that the bi Mike view necessitates oversimplifying the story as “Mike used to be into El, and now he’s into Will.” That isn’t necessarily the case. A bi Mike reading can still involve internalized homophobia, projection, the heteronormative pressure to conform and date girls, repression, and most of the things we talk about here.

(I didn’t really wanna get involved in this, but I feel like this is important to add).

Just saw someone posting a pic from Shadow House were Patrick gives Emilico a bouquet of roses and tagged it "lesbian Patrick". This is the same comic where Ricky is embarrassed about his crush on on a girl (living dolls aren't supposed to have any feelings), and a fan took this as evidence of him being a trans girl. The same comic where multiple people head canon Patrick--who is the first character to internally admit his love for a girl, and then gets embroiled with another girl (it's complicated ;-;), and whose soot power literally manifests as hearts shooting out of him --and multiple people headcanon this guy as aromantic.

You know, maybe we DO need a straight awareness day?
