To Walk A Mile In Each Others Shoes: The Ranchers
Summary: The soulbonds have consequences, and for some they are more welcome than others. Tango and Jimmy Edition
Characters: TangoTek & Solidarity Gaming
Word Count: 370
General Note: I'm posting these as separate one-shot style posts for each soulbond pair. They are all written but I have them queued up and spaced out. All posted will be on this blog under the tag "to walk a mile in each others shoes" and also on my AO3, which is linked on my pinned post.

Tango notices the itching first. A creeping sensation at his hairline and in-between his shoulder blades. At first he thinks its just sweat and dust, the normal byproducts of the work he and Jimmy are putting into building and populating their ranch. It takes him an embarrassing amount of time to realize that it isn't.
It's feathers. Sprouting in his hairline and down his back, fewer than Jimmy's, but in the same places, an unmistakable mirror of downy fluff and a few scattered emerging pinfeathers.
The itching gets worse and Jimmy shows him how to use pressure and cold to relieve it. Tango doesn't seem to have the ability to make the oil needed to keep them healthy, so Jimmy uses his own, flustered and rambling the whole time he shows Tango how to work it into the feathers.
They feel better after, though still itchy. An odd sensation of growth against his skin.
The pinfeathers never get the chance to open up.
(He never connects the dots, doesn't really register the weird sensations of deja vu, the vague sense of Knowing what is about to happen right before it does. And even if he had, he probably wouldn't have realized where they came from.)
-
Jimmy doesn't notice until the ranch burns.
He knows a lot of people would probably make a joke about his obliviousness there, but in his defense he doesn't usually stick his hands into fire.
Until the ranch burns and Tango is raging and Jimmy is trying to put out two fires at once, both of them more literal than advisable.
The ranch burns and Tango burns and Jimmy reaches into the flames and pulls him out and it doesn't so much as singe his skin.
One things avians and netherborn have in common, Jimmy learns, is that they are always cold. Hollow bones and Nether-nature equally out of place on the ground of the Overworld. But netherborn produce heat, warming the air around them. Jimmy can't get as hot as Tango, no shimmer over his hand no matter how hard he strains and stares, but Tango says its enough he can feel it.
They may not have many nights in the game, but at least they can keep each other warm.

tbh i think the overall theme of scarlet and violet is about simply living in the moment and making the most of it, treasuring that which you have in the present as opposed to endlessly dwelling on the past or anxiously staring towards the future
you’ve got sada obsessed with the past and turo obsessed with the future both of whom are trying to do insane things to create their ideal world, then there’s arven their son who can actually live in the present. he’s capable of interacting with the world around him and enjoying simple things like sandwiches and nice big doggy and friends. at the end even though he understandably feels gutted by it all he resolves to look at what’s good and present in his life as opposed to what’s missing
if sada and turo had just chilled out and tried to spend time with their son in the present, if they hadn’t taken their family and own lives for granted, if they hadn’t gone insane with obsession, maybe things could’ve turned out so much better for them. maybe if that which they treasured most was something a little more wholesome…
it’s often emphasized in this game how you ought to chase your dreams and find your own greatest treasure, but then at the end they take that uplifting bit of encouragement and turn it on its head. sada and turo chased their dreams and it led them to their deaths. they almost destroyed the world to bring about that which they desired and treasured most. the message here is that there are some things that you just can’t change, some things that you just can’t do. not every dream can come true.

Do you have an ao3?
yep! i'm rain11 on ao3 and my fic sideblog is @rain11-fic. here is a handy guide as to where i put my fandom content:
i just don't particularly enjoy drawing angst or sex so if i have a good idea it gets turned into a fic :) same goes for more drawn-out conversations, i just dont have the CON stat to make long comics. i'm keeping the ao3 acct separate from my main for now because it gets very kinky over there and my art blog (@lazycranberrydoodles) is like... the maturity level of a classic 80s movie.

I have a lot of opinions about MacKay's Moon Knight, some of them are good and some of them bad (the bad will mostly only make sense to anyone else who has read the entirety of Moon Knight's 48 year publication history), but like there's no denying that this man loves comics. Not just in the "guy who is in the comic industry/grew up with comics" way but in the "guy who deeply understands the medium but is also endlessly curious about the medium, not just big 2 and not just superhero/vigilante genre and not just modern day either, and he is willing to do a hell of a lot of research on it at pretty much any point in his day for any reason or no reason" way. Just from my observations. And idk I think it's pretty cool that the current Moon Knight guy isn't just a guy that loves Moon Knight or a guy that loves Marvel or whatever, but also a guy that just loves comics in that particular way (I am failing to articulate what I mean by "in that way" but I hope you get it).

i haven't rewatched other girls in a while bc it was made during a rough time for my mental health which makes it difficult to revisit without having that be an unignorable part of it for me but i'm currently editing the video essay i'm doing for my final in one of my college courses and i'm using a montage of clips from other girls in it and rn i'm just sitting here like damn i really did that!!! like yeah i was going through the most major manic-depressive episode of my life and not coping with it well at all, but also like damn between the ages of 16 and 20 i wrote and composed a two hour musical comedy with a dozen original songs (despite never having written music before), directed a production of it at the beginning of my sophomore year of college and put it out into the world as something people can watch. that's a huge accomplishment, and the fact that i was able to do that while getting through my own mental health struggle is actually super impressive
i really hope i get to a point where i can revisit other girls as its own piece of art without dwelling on my own mental health struggles behind the scenes (especially bc i'm in such a better place rn and i probably wouldn't have grown as much as i have without those struggles) but i'm so proud of my past self for being able to put it all together. and even if it didn't reach hundreds of thousands of views, it was able to reach some people who really connected with it
btw here's the video of it if any of my followers are interested and haven't seen it:
(i really hope i can get subtitles for the whole thing eventually bc the audio isn't always clear, but i do still have the script if people want to follow along with that)
