The live action Scooby-Doo movies?

I did not see this ask until RIGHT now (first time on desktop since crab day, second time since Nov 5 2020 [which was DOUBLY experience since I got my phone taken the same day]) so I'm going to assume this ask got eaten on mobile because tumblr, HOWEVER you poked a bear with this ask anon (as I'm sure you knew when asking) SO without further ado: my Scooby Doo live action opinions

So when you say 'live action Scooby-Doo movies' I'm assuming you're talking about the James Gunn films, starting with Scooby-Doo (2002) followed by Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, just due to like, generally popularity and also the fact that I have actually seen those films. However shoot another ask if you wanted me to include Curse of the Lake Monster in this (because I will if anyone cares and turn this into a live-action scooby dissertation, i'd just need to like. watch the movie first) But anyways where I'm going with this is that this post is about the Gunn movies aka the ones with SMG, Freddie Prinze Jr., Linda Cardellini, and ofc our #1 man, Matthew Lilliard.

Okay so my take on these movies is... complicated. I wouldn't say it's as complicated as my feelings towards SDMI, because I watched the live actions way less as a kid and generally care less about them, but still no matter how much shit I throw at these two movies there are parts that I generally like (even love) that stops me from totally condemning them wholesale. Like the fact that these movies are FUNNY! There's so many moments from this duology that are just beyond iconic "like, that's one of my favorite names!" the whole thing with Scooby in the dress at the airport, ET. CETERA (like I can go on!)

The Gunn movies are genuinely SO fun and I can 100% see and understand how they've stood so well in the public view as a representation of Scooby. HOWEVER, this is where you start to see my problems with them. For the general American, (because that is the audience I'm familiar with) ESPECIALLY millennials and younger, who happen to make up the majority of both people on this site AND people I talk about Scooby with in real life, these movies, and the elements they introduced as "quintessential scooby tropes" are the base of their understanding of the Scooby franchise, along with likely some miscellaneous WAY episodes and maybe SDMI.

Which is where I get pissed off. In the pushing of the narrative of "breaking away" from the Scooby norm, Gunn basically invents (aka totally makes up) an idea of what classic era Scooby was like, cementing an idea of classic Scooby into the public mind that is totally disingenuous and just straight up false. For example, in attempting to portray Daphne as having taken strides to be seen more seriously in solving mysteries and defending herself, it pushes the narrative that in the classic era she WASN'T taken seriously, and only existed as a damsel-in-distress prop of a character, which is just not true??? Like yes, Daphne is clumsy, that's a part of her character, and her friends (because, fun fact, the gang ARE friends) joke about it sometimes because that's what friends DO. Framing that in some kind of sexist "that's all she does" lens is just total bull, especially as gang members fall into secret passageways/get lost etc. in WAY ALL THE DAMN TIME because that's how the plot functions! Like are we calling Velma ditzy for losing her glasses every other episode? Of course not, and Fred falls into passageways all the time, not to MENTION Shaggy and Scooby and all they get up to. Also one last thing on the topic of Daphne, like this idea of her mystery solving skills not being respected by the gang is just so supremely bullshit it amazes me sometimes, especially when she was the LEADER (or leader adjacent) through pretty much all of her appearances in the 1980s [Not that James Gunn could look at '80s era Scooby without spitting on it, but I digress]

AND THIS IS JUST DAPHNE! Like the perceptions pushed towards Fred (and Velma, but mostly Fred) through these movies are just as bad! Like okay, with Fred---In these movies Fred is just an asshole. I hate Gunn Movies!Fred. I mean yeah he can be funny but it's almost always so mean! Almost nothing makes me madder than a mean Fred by the way. If he's putting other gang members down (even halfway, like with his whole "dorky chicks like you turn me on too" line, which... ew) then to me something has gone very, very, VERY, wrong in your basic understanding of Frederick Herman Jones as a character. Like he's the cheerleader! He puts himself in between his friends and danger! He loves nets, and traps, and Elvis impressions, and wrestling, and the trapeze, and cars, and most of all he LOVES sharing the things he loves with his friends! (Sometimes to a bit of an extreme. No one wants to hear about your net facts, Fred) And the live action movies just don't understand that at all. And I know there's maybe something to say I suppose in that some of those aspects of his characterization hadn't been "established yet" by the time "Scooby-Doo" came out in 2002. But it's there if you look. For Fred Jones, being the leader means being the caretaker, (he's the Mom friend what can I say) and any version where he's cruel and arrogant and just DOESN'T CARE about his friends in the way he's shown to in the Gunn movies is just so far from Fred to me it's not even funny. And what makes it even worse for me is that this (or at least something similar) is the idea of Fred that has really spread to the popular culture. Just the "leader", the jock that makes the rules, the one that [insert X adaptation here] finally gave a personality and made interesting (something that has been said more times than I can count for pretty much every gang member, save Shaggy and Scooby).

And I haven't even touched on Velma, and how they gave her a bit of a early 2000s smart superiority girl complex against Daphne, plus the whole makeover thing and etc. etc. The Gunn Movies are pretty much what would happen if you took someone who hadn't seen Scooby since they were 7 years old (and honestly had a pretty negative outlook against it then) and tried to "fix" it, only his memory was so bad he just made up problems (and threw in a good helping of early 2000s style sexism with it) convincing pretty much the entirety of the popular culture that said problems exist and that Gunn was absolutely brilliant for fixing them (and then bringing up said "problems" whenever anyone wants to talk about Scooby) and this entire rant has been without even fucking MENTIONING what is probably the reason you, anonymous tumblr user sent this ask in the first place, to I, Swishy "Scrappy Doo Redemption Arc" Broke-on-books (dot tumblr dot com), which is his HIGHLY SUCESSFUL and utterly sadistic character assassination of my number one man, Scrappy Doo.

And I am going to try my damnedest here not to get totally into my highly passionate opinions over what James Gunn did to Scrappy in the first of his Scooby movies and how thoroughly it has pissed me the fuck off because I have been writing this post for over an hour now and if we start to really get into my feelings on this topic it will certainly be a couple of hours more but like. That Fucking Bitch. I give James Gunn personally a solid eighty-five percent of the blame for making my life as a Scrappy Doo fan UTTERLY unbearable with this stupid fucking movie alone, and just his Scrappy crimes would honestly be enough for me to say that I hate this movie, not even considering the numerous Scooby crimes I've been talking about here for the past million paragraphs, but the part about this movie that makes me the MOST mad the most pissed off is that it's actually a good fucking movie. James Gunn wrote two hilarious and entertaining movies that have become beloved in the popular culture for their successes in that arena, while at the same time pissing all over the core themes and messages of the franchise of which it was based, that of friendship.

TLDR; The Live Action Scooby Doo movies (written by James Gunn) are highly entertaining and fun pieces of media to watch, and are widely loved by the general public and looked at with fondness and nostalgia because of that. However, as a hardcore Scooby Doo fan (writing that phrase sounds so ridiculous but oh well) the existence of these movies and their impact on the popular culture can be extremely frustrating (despite any personal nostalgia said fan may have) due to their spreading of a misinformed picture of what "typical Scooby Doo" looks like. This picture is especially frustrating due to the fabrication or exaggeration of problems present in classic Scooby (such as sexism in regards to the girls), as well as giving more ammunition to other problems in Scooby fandom (such as oversexualization, and sexualization in general, which no one wants to see in regards to their children's cartoons, like HONESTLY.) Discussions of sexism and sexualization in Scooby (both of which ARE present and are issues, although not at their worst in WAY) can often lead to an overlooking of the issues that are very present and clear in WAY and have continued since then with far too little resistance (I'm 100% talking about the racism here) HOWEVER that topic deserves at least a dozen posts of its own that I am no way informed or qualified enough to even begin to think about writing. The Gunn Movies are frustrating to many longtime Scooby fans because of these reasons, but for me, and fellow Scrappy Doo fans there is also the added aspect of the demonization of Scrappy Doo in the live action movies and the affects that has had on the popular culture as well, making it uniquely inhospitable to like or enjoy the character of Scrappy. OMG YESSS I LOVE SCREAM AUS FOR ANYTHING. they’re so fun. i talked a lot so i’m putting it under a read more just in case!!

okay my favorite scream movie is scream 5 so it’s primarily inspired by that one (i’m sure you can guess why. my tamber phase was so insane. i love lesbians). it’s not exactly alike but that was my main starting point for this au LOL

anyway so. the main cast/relationships for this au are: quinn & santana (best friends.. kind of), rachel & finn (dating), brittany (dating santana ofc), mercedes & sam (both single! but mercedes kinda likes quinn and sam??? idk yet), and i’m thinking like. i wanna include tina, puck, and artie. i just haven’t really figured out exactly how they’ll be in it/what their roles will be 💀 but i do know that artie def has a crush on brittany? he’d be kind of like wes but less weird because him and puck have some straight boy yaoi situation going on icl. And then obviously klaine!!! is there too 🫵

sooo for quinn & santana i think they’d be the ghostfaces!! and honestly as a duo, i think they’d balance the kill/call life because they’re both very skilled in both departments if that makes sense. like i think it’d mostly come down to whether or not one of them have more of a problem with their victim or not, because otherwise i think quinn would prefer phone calls whereas santana would prefer handling the kills. they’re best friends in this universe as well, but they’re similar to mindy and amber in my eyes where they kinda act like they hate each other/they argue a lot (just as quinntana does in the show 😭 you know) but everyone knows they’re just messing around and simply have diff view points etc etc. they fake accuse each other a lot to solidify that they don’t even trust anybody much less e/o (even though it’s THEM. you know.) so that they seem wayyy less guilty than they really are. basic stuff. also brittany’s another ghostface i forgot to mention but mostly i think she’d be like back-up. like she’d keep watch kind of. does that make sense. the whole 3 ghostface thing always has that one fake-out ghostface that ends up ACTUALLY being a ghostface too and it confuses everybody. so that’s basically what she is here.

(oh also i debated on having one of the ghostfaces be mercedes but i think she’d fit more of a tatum type of character. but she’d survive is the thing LOL.)

ive deliberated over a lot of different options but i think rachel would be the opening kill (quinn’s work 💕💘💗) and then of course finn. like at the same time. probably because they were hanging out together.

thennnn everyone would be on edge! quinn would be picking fights with santana now, but just little things. like “how do we know what you were doing last night? we all know how you felt about them both…” to which santana would defend herself with stuff like “you’re one to talk. you didn’t like them either, so how do i know you’re not just pushing the blame onto me?” etc etc stuff like that. brittany would try to stop their argumentss. typical unholy trinity dynamic. blaine would be super anxious about everybody and kurt would be suspicious of people, tina would be really scared and honestly just try to get away from all of it and mercedes would try and stay level-headed about everything but protect herself especially too. (and she’d be concerned about quinn). puck’s the biggest suspect because he’s puck and everything about that is suspicious xx. and artie is there but i haven’t figured out his deal i think he’d be freaked out and sorta just leave the whole group like give up on all of them which may result in him being the second kill actually. because he does what you’re not meant to do: Go Be Alone.

(and since artie kinda likes brittany and he’s sort of in wes’s position in the fifth movie, the second kill result for him kinda makes sense to me)

after finchel and artie are gone i thiiink puck for sure is the biggest suspect. there’s a memorial party for artie obviously and puck’s throwing it 🫵 which doesn’t really help anybody believe that he didn’t do it. and he’s also just being stupid like girl.

once it’s the whole party thing , i think kurt and blaine would go outside and try and chill and then get attacked (killed? unsure guys.), party’s still going on but mercedes noticed that some people are missing so she just tells quinn and then quinn’s faux scared. tells sam probably and sam goes out looking for klaine cause they’re all besties #kublam) and the rest after this i’m still trying to figure out

honestly that’s all i think would happen so far i hope it makes sense?? i had some other ideas but NGL i’m blanking sooooo. anyway. if you have any questions let me know because i do have a vague idea/main points for parts of the story (even ones i didn’t mention) sooo yeah.! i hope you think this glee scream au is cool too:)

ohhhh i just realized why i have no desire to sleep even though i in fact am getting tired🤪 my cousin was in psychosis for two weeks on coke off meds and two days ago he took a turn and directed all of his pain and anger at me n was talking shit about me saying vile things (mostly about being lesbian) till 4 am two days ago and till 6am last night. walking in the living room where i was juggling a knife and scraping it on our roomates doors, throwing n stabbing oranges around the house till he got 5250’d in the morning. i hope hes having an alright time in there he really needs help and hopefully rehab and hopefully he finally wants the change that he might not know he needs and actually does want. ya had to vent it out guys thx for reading my run on sentence, im actually tryna lead into a better, personal topic and this plays a part on it so i started there. i uh started recovery in AA 3 days ago and im so fucking happy to finally want to take my life back fully into my own hands and have the drive and ambition that i got easily with alcohol (fucking cop out). ik how this sounds to some people, i went to AA and NA for fun when i was in a grouphome at 17 bc it was another way for us to get off the campus and hangout with the other houses (they called them cottages🏡🕯️🎍☺️). so im very comfortable in that environment, it wasn’t an entirely new concept or energy to me, its been about ten years, but this is my first time coming with a severe desire to change and take back my life into my own hands. ya i had drank in highschool (fuckinn middle school too) but i dont think i ever had to drink and drink and drink till i passout and not be able to stop until im blacked out. that didnt happen till i was 23 in such a chaotic livlihood i couldnt stand any part of my reality, work, home, abusive relationship, i couldnt breathe but i could drink. to the point i was delivering weed from the dispensary drunk. it happened again over the summer for all of the same reasons but this time i had come back to my cousins house to get on my feet and ultimately ended up helping everyone else and their businesses and livlihood more than my own and i was drained out, favor not returned gang. i thought i was gonna stop drinking at the end of summer and i did a few times, a week, two a month but the binges were bad and i was in a lot of dangerous situations recently. everytime i thought i was ready, someone would give me a reason to catch a nice break from the chaos circus life, n who would say no to what sounds like bliss? the last time i drank i didnt even want to, i didnt even wanna go out shit, friend called me crying for help, by the end of the night i needed a relief drink joined got physically hurt (7 minor injuries but some are mid😭), stranded they took off w my phone and wallet in my bag, no sweater at 4am upset in a parking lot not tryna take three hour walk home. a ride from a nice lady w a sketchy guy judging me. how the fuck did it happen again, how easy couldve i prevented this. i had already reached out to a well versed friend that i need to get sober, she said she’d be around in a couple days n we would go. i told her again the next day i needed it even more now and we went that night, which she was wanting to bc she liked that specific meeting. well gang that specific meeting is always gonna be the story to the start of my meeting. i immediately got picked to lead and read through out the meeting on a little stage in front of everyone with the key speaker. as i expected haha, never heard of a lottery meeting like that. i made a home that night, i kept eveyones lottery ticket from the raffle that i picked (and the three left over), i hadnt felt so much support in years, and all at once and a whole room full of people.

i know im only three days in but ive been waiting my whole life to be here.

anyways, quick summary about jackie.

Jackie went through a lot in his living years! going through the 50s to the 80s as a black man in the uk certainly was something! He used to be a genuine sweet and caring kid and now he still cares but hes very jaded by the world. He used to be part of the british black panther party and he has many opinions bout stuff and politics! but he has quited down quite a bit after his embrace.

he has a bit of a shortfuse cuz folk keep threathening him and hurting him so he is quite defensive. sadly he does not have the brains to see yet that he himself also hurts people and he should be a bit nicer to folk sometimes!

He cares tons about his friends and those who he considers fam. he does not enjoy seeing folk get hurt but.... if push comes to shove he will always choose himself. hes all he has. and all he can rely on and nobody is worth destroying himself over. atleast he'd like to think that. he does however often finds himself choosing his friends over himself and he hates it.

hi!! i would play far cry 4 or watch a playthrough and form your own opinion tbh!! i loooove fc4, it's up there with being one of my favourite video games of all time, and pagan is one of my favourite far cry characters just bc of how complex he is!! ubisoft was at it's prime making fc4 tbh.

but!! there's a lot of themes in 4 that are focused around dictatorship, drug states, religious freedom of practice, morality regarding those things, and of course this all takes place in a country based between nepal and tibet, so it's not really my place to speak on a lot of it outside of 'haha pretty far cry game go boom'. pagan IS a dictator in a country being torn apart by war and while he himself seems to be kind of doing everything for fun and like. whatever he wants to do, he's still in this weird balance of 'morally is it okay to ship with him' and 'i guess he isn't THAT bad compared to other characters' (especially characters like yuma or de pleur or even amita and sabal!! but those are rants for another time). he is incredibly quirky and does silly stuff but at the end of the day he's the fucked up ruler of a warring country who grew up affiliated with gangs and other bad things. like yeah we haven't seen him do anything outside of killing people who don't appease him (read: make his food correctly), yell at ajay over the radio, stab a man with a fork and another with a pen, melt down most of kyrat's gold and turn it into a statue of himself, and like. i dunno. i don't think he's done any horribly fucked up things if that's what you're asking, but keep in mind he does still hold a maaaajor position of power in a bad situation and is very self-aware about it

i personally love pagan though!! he's a weird bisexual uncle!! just make sure you do watch / play the game because it IS an incredibly good game, it's stupidly gorgeous and fun, and as far as far cry games go it's probably got the deepest and most realistic story in my opinion because the main character you want to root for, he's a good kid, you get the scope of how fucked up the situation in kyrat is and it's just. a lot.

and i have to state that I'm also coming from a basic white american standpoint so i don't fully understand a lot of what is going on and how to feel about it and i likely never will (as far as the cultural and religious themes go ofc) but um. as long as you're respectful and again, do research, then you should be okay??

3. how skilled is your muse at communication? 

Now this answer can vary, but most of the time? Namine isn't the best verbal communicator, and this is because she struggles to find the correct words to perfectly explain how she feels a lot.

But there are times when Namine is pretty good at communicating with people, and most of these times are when she's feeling overwhelmed by all her emotions, this is because it’s the only time she doesn’t worry about phrasing because she just wants to get it off her chest in hopes of making herself feel less overwhelmed by emotions.

5. are there any fears your muse still holds from childhood? 

Namine wouldn't typically refer to Castle Oblivion as her childhood, nor would she refer to the memories that she has of Kairi's childhood ( that she learned about during CoM while altering Sora’s memories ) as her own. She doesn't really feel as if she had much of a childhood, for she never had the chance to truly be a child with how much responsibility she had pushed onto her from the get-go. 

But since Castle Oblivion is closest thing I think I can call a childhood in this case, I think there is at least one fear Namine holds from then.

And it’d probably complete isolation with no clear way to get out. The mere idea of that alone is something that makes her severely uncomfortable and anxious, but if she were to be completely isolated with no apparent means of escape? She would panic and get very upset to the point it would probably bring tears to her eyes. For it feels all too reminiscent of Castle Oblivion, the place where she was isolated from the world and people ( even though the organization was there), and no given way to escape.

You literally made me do a double take with this one because I was literally writing up a drabble about one of Rex's parental figures FGJFG

12. what is a lesson your muse’s parent(s)/guardian taught them that they still hold onto?

There are like 2 separate parental figures that Rex has had at this point, so there are quite a few lessons he learned from them! But I'm gonna list one main lesson he's learned from them.

For Corinne, she's taught him that even if someone is treating him poorly that he shouldn't take it laying down no matter who they are. She might have raised this boy to be kind, but she also raised him to stand up for himself and what he believes in. This effectively is something that is shown through his journey and fighting for what he believes in! >:3c

As for Vandham, he taught Rex how to fight more efficiently and about the state of the world of Alrest itself. For while Rex was somewhat aware of it, he wasn't as aware as Vandham was. And while it's not a leson, the words Rex holds onto from Vandham is

" Remember to fight your own war! "

And it's for a more than one reason as well why those words stick in his mind. I'll explain more on that part more when I have the chance to dfdfkdf
