Tansui's Adventures - #23, Lost Hope

It was supposed to be easy.

Tansui was not prepared for the empty, sullen eyes, hollowed cheeks, the movements that would’ve been more fitting with the walking dead than living, breathing people. Tansui was not prepared for the empty looks, and toneless voice, devoid of any kind of light or spark or hope.

He was not prepared for a small child telling them his story, nor a simple request of leaves - leaves! - to eat, for the hunger was too much.

Tansui’s own stomach clenched in a phantom pain, a memory so vivid and familiar, a taste of bile and ash and dry mold washing over his tongue, lodging itself into his throat, causing a rolling at the pit of his core.

He didn’t hesitate to go down on one knee and give the rest of his rations - he still had some raisins and treats they had been saving up, but the hungry needed them more. Tansui could always just hunt down a peiste and eat that dry meat. Anything to prevent someone else feeling the all consuming hunger that would make even the strongest of warriors into desperate savage.

Taking in a deep breath, Tansui took a look over the camp - Lost Hope. Originally, Tansui hadn’t figured out why’d people call it that, but now… now they understood. Even the resident guard told them to get away before being stuck here - but Tansui refused, shaking their head. They did not care for reputation.

Tansui was not going to leave without making things at least a little better first.
