So Let’s Cast the Night Vale TV Show - Part Two, The Palmer-Carlsbergs

Welcome back to So Let’s Cast the Night Vale TV Show, an idea I came up with that was supposed to be community-sourced, but seems to be mostly led by myself. However, if you DO want to add your ideas, use the tag #nightvalefancast and let me know what you think. 

This is probably the most self-indulgent casting so far, but I’m operating on the assumption that we can get literally anyone for the Night Vale show, and that several characters will be aged up for the show. (For example, when we get to Tamika Flynn next time, I’ll be aging her up as well.) In this case, it’s Janice who I’ve decided should be a high-school level basketball athlete at the start of the TV show, rather than the middle schooler she was in canon. 

Okay! Let’s cast the Palmer-Carlsberg family!

Steve Carlsberg: Originally voiced by Hal Lublin. Fancast, Sean Astin

Nobody does wholesome step-dad like Sean Astin. Nobody. As some of you may know, I’m a big Lord of the Rings fan, so I’ve followed Mr. Astin’s social media, watched his interviews, read his autobiography, and the consensus seems to be that he’s an all-around charming guy and a blast to work with. Based on his role as Bob in Stranger Things, he’s already sort of done the loveable dad thing, so he’d be a perfect Steve. Plus, he looks like he’d coach a basketball team. He just does. 

Abby Palmer: Not voiced. Fancast, Gina Gershon. 

Is she way too famous? Yes. Is she too old? Absolutely not. Abby Palmer is an immortal milf. Abby should be knowledgeable yet down to earth with just a smidge of intimidating, and I think Gina Gershon is all of those things. Also, insanely hot. Also, I’m an Abby truther and want only the best to play her. I love Abby. Okay moving on. 

Janice Palmer: Not voiced. Fancast, Kiera Allen

Kiera Allen is relatively unknown the industry, having just had her breakout role in Hulu’s “Run” opposite Sarah Paulson. However, that’s not due to her lack of talent; probably more due to the ableism that is still unfortunately present in Hollywood and LA. Kiera Allen was the second female wheelchair-user to star in a suspense thriller; a genre that’s been included in Night Vale multiple times. She’s a graduate of Columbia University! Janice is witty and charismatic, and I think Allen would bring that out well, having the chance to play something different from her horror-fied character in “Run”.

One of the most original time-travel thrillers since 12 Monkeys. A brilliant subversion of the Time Paradox trope, with enough plot twists to keep you entertained until well after the movie is finished. Predestination is an amazing movie with great performances from Ethan Hawke and Sarah Snook. It’s a movie that will feel like Inception, when it comes to messing with your mind and barely anyone has heard of it. It is highly underrated and unknown, sadly.

A zombie virus breaks out and catches up with a father as he is taking his daughter from Seoul to Busan, South Korea’s second-largest city. Watch them trying to survive to reach their destination, a purported safe zone.

The acting is spot-on; the set pieces are particularly well choreographed. You’ll care about the characters. You’ll feel for the father as he struggles to keep his humanity in the bleakest of scenarios.

It’s a refreshingly thrilling disaster movie, a perfect specimen of the genre.

Serenity is a futuristic sci-fi film that serves as a feature-length continuation of the story-line from the TV program Firefly (2002–2003). The story revolves around the captain (Nathan Fillion) and crew of the titular space vessel that operate as space outlaws, running cargo and smuggling missions throughout the galaxy. They take on a mysterious young psychic girl and her brother, the girl carrying secrets detrimental to the intergalactic government, and soon find themselves being hunted by a nefarious assassin (Chiwetel Ejiofor). In the year of the Netflix TV Show Maniac, another absurdist title stole critics’ hearts. Sorry to Bother You is a movie set in an alternate reality, where capitalism and greed are accentuated. Lakeith Stanfield (Atlanta) is a guy called Cassius who struggles to pay his bills. However, when at a tele-marketing job an old-timer tells him to use a “white voice”, he starts moving up the ranks of his bizarre society. A really smart movie that will be mostly enjoyed by those who watch it for its entertaining value, and not so much for its commentary. It is like a Black Mirror episode stretched into a movie.

Ex Machina is the directorial debut of Alex Garland, the writer of 28 Days Later (and 28 Weeks Later). It tells the story of Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson from About Time), an IT developer who is invited by a billionaire CEO to participate in a groundbreaking experiment — administering a Turing test to a humanoid robot called Ava (Alicia Vikander). Meeting the robot with feelings of superiority at first, questions of trust and ethics soon collide with the protagonist’s personal views. While this dazzling film does not rely on them, the visual effects and the overall look-feel of Ex Machina are absolutely stunning and were rightly picked for an Academy Award. They make Ex Machina feel just as casually futuristic as the equally stylish Her and, like Joaquin Phoenix, Gleeson aka Caleb must confront the feelings he develops towards a machine, despite his full awareness that ‘she’ is just that. This is possibly as close to Kubrick as anyone got in the 21st century. Ex Machina is clever, thrilling, and packed with engaging ideas.

RUN MOVIE REVIEW

This plot isn't original. It’s a risky plot to tackle, but not a risk that hasn't been taken before. However, if you have a Hulu subscription, you're just cheating yourself if you haven't watched this movie. Here’s why I think that.

You’ll be able to see the direction this film is headed within the first ten minutes. It spoon feeds the audience quite a bit of information throughout the entire run time. This is the second feature collaboration between director Aneesh Chaganty and his co-writer, Sev Ohanian. They are coming off the wildy successful ‘Searching’. In this movie, they have more to play with as far as set limitations. The narrative is focused on the two lead characters. Sarah Paulson is the mother and Kiera Allen is the daughter confined to a wheel chair. I’m going to get this out of the way; the performances by these two are what made the movie. The reason the movie isn't entirely forgettable is because of the acting. Where the writing might have seemed ‘whatever’, they sold the tension, and I was feeling it by the emotions they were conveying. Very well done.

It seems like the cinematography starts off with light greens and blues and gets darker as the movie progresses. Diane Sherman (Sarah Paulson) starts the movie off in a support group telling the cast of people that she’s happy for her daughter to go out into the world and grow up and have opportunities. The indication out of the gates implies that she in fact is not down for that. The vibes get creepier as the story progresses. The direction and execution of what they had was done very well. Yet, I was left with some emptiness thinking they could have done a little more with the premise.

FINAL THOUGHTS

This has ‘Misery’ vibes by Stephen King for sure. I got a lot of King vibes towards the end of the film too when the action starts to amp up and things get a little wild. During all the scenes where we discover just how f’d up her mom really is; I enjoyed the tension of those. We feel like we can't walk, easy to put yourself in the shoes Kierra Allen’s character, the tension is real and in that aspect the movie worked.

I don't think the last act was bad by any means, but I feel like the plot just went in every direction you would expect. The acting between these two ladies was spot on, because of that I think this movie would have fit just fine in theaters. It would have been one of those movies you walked out slightly disappointed by, but by no means would I have felt cheated out of money. So if you have Hulu, give it a try.

Bestie can you give me any horror movie recommendations? (Preferably stuff that's more psychological horror/thriller as opposed to jump scare stuff)

so sorry this took me so long to answer! okay here's some reccs. feel free to ask for more specific horror genres like supernatural/not supernatural, or murder mystery type, etc.

They Look Like People (2015). Indie horror movie with such incredible tension. You're not quite sure if its all in his head or actually happening, and it keeps you on the edge of your seat all throughout.

The Blackcoat's Daughter (2015). A very unique kind of demonic possession story. It is so atmospheric and moody but also a really strong character arc. The ending made me cry my eyes out

Elizabeth Harvest (2018). This is one of those movies where its best going in blind and not watching the trailer or anything. I can say its a bit sci-fi, and the twist is totally worth it.

Run (2020). Horror queen Sarah Paulson stars in this claustrophobic thriller that I absolutely loved. The story may not be especially unique but the characters are strong and vivid. Its a great watch.

Saint Maud (2019). Religious horror baby! This does have a few jumpscares though. Its visually stunning and the main character just pulls you inside her head and its so riveting.

I genuinely adored this movie. I love that they got an actual wheelchair user to play Chloe, and they made her a genuinely badass protagonist. I might be biased but I also love the theming of the movie; the presentation of an abusive parent disguised as overbearing love.

The script is much more clever than I ever expected it to be, and it earns your trust enough to allow you to suspend disbelief in the final scenes. It gives so much to chew on.

It’s got some visceral moments and really great characters that defy expectations that are typical to horror movies. The casting is incredible; Sarah Paulson and Kiera Allen are excellent.

I’ve watched this one twice and would recommend it to anyone that wants a good, not gory thriller.

The last few weeks at the Academy have been crazy. 

Apparently Misty, Cordelia’s old flame, is back from hell and the blonde girl seems to be the only thing your lover can focus on. Since she’s back Cordelia has been neglecting not only you but also her duties as headmistress and Supreme. 

Days passed by and everyone started to notice how paler and skinnier you grew every day. It was like you were fading right in front of them and they couldn’t do anything to stop it. Myrtle, being like a second mother to you and knowing about your past struggle with eating disorder and depression, tried to talk to you to get you to open up to her, but all she got was a fake smile and a flebil “I’m ok Myrtle, no need to worry.” 

Apparently the only one that didn’t notice your changes was Cordelia since she was so engrossed in making up for lost time with her little friend. But today Madison has enough, after you almost passed out while teaching due to lack of food she barge into the greenhouse yelling at her Supreme “What the fuck is wrong with you Cordelia?” The blond woman who’s sitting next to Misty looks at the young witch in shock “Madison, what are you talking about and especially why are you yelling, I’m not deaf.” she remarks. Madison rolls her eyes scoffing “You may not be deaf, but for sure you are blind my dear Cordy.” Noticing that the Supreme is as confused as before, she keeps saying, “Your lovely fiance has been starving herself for the past week cause she thinks she’s not enough for you since you’ve spent every single moment of your day with Misty here.” 

Cordelia gasps realizing what she has done. When you two first got together she made a promise to you, that she would have never neglected you or made you feel less than what you are. And here she is now, tears streaming down her cheeks, heart breaking after she just broke her promise. Without even thinking the Supreme runned out the greenhouse up to your shared room. 

In the meantime, after you almost passed out, Myrtle and Queenie brought you up to your room where you’re now laying in bed trying to rest, But actually the only thing you can do is cry. The voice in your head keeps repeating to you how useless and unlovable you are, and this time no one is there to prove you the contrary. 

You’re drowning in your own thoughts when there’s a knock at your door and then Cordelia's voice starts saying “Little one, please… I’ve been terrible this past week I know… but please let me hold you honey…” Her voice is weak and shaky as she’s been crying, usually hearing her in this condition makes your heart clench and rush to her, but not this time. You’re empty at the moment, you feel nothing. It’s like if inside of you there is a huge hole that you can’t replace. “You promised… You promised to never hurt me, but today you broke me Cordelia…”

even before the apocalypse, she nearly lost her job by dropping everything to be by your side when you needed her

then she lost you when the world ended; and it seemed as if her world was ending just the same

then you walked into the outpost, hazmat suit and all

she panicked, cupping your face in her hands “darling are you okay? are you hurt?”

she went as far and dropping her rules on sex and affection in the outpost just to have you the way she wanted

wilhemina let you in on her biggest insecurity

she had never shown anyone her back

she avoided all questions about her cane up until they came out of your mouth one date night

she looked at you with worried eyes and she allowed her dress to pool at her feet

she turned around, allowing your eyes to travel along the crookedness of her spine

she shivered when you ran your fingers down her back softly “does it hurt?” she shook her head, her cheeks blushing harshly “no, just uncomfortable is all.”

Mildred Ratched

mildred knows exactly how to keep you safe

she always knew how to keep you out of trouble, how to keep you close, and how to protect you

she could hold you, tell you that everything was going to be okay and mean it with everything in her, “shh shh, it’s okay honey, it’s okay,”

she’d keep you close at the hospital but far enough away that you couldn’t get caught up in the plan she was hatching

mildred told all of her stories with her eyes

you noticed it the first time you met her; that look in her eyes that told you a story completely different than the one her mouth was telling

especially when she denied her feelings for you, but she looked at you as if she was longing to reach out for you and hold you

you knew she was going to kiss you before she even leaned in because her eyes sparked with this glassy light that you had never seen before, “if you’re going to kiss me go ahead and stop torturing yourself.”

My thoughts on AHS Double Feature E5 (SPOILERS):

When i said i wanted to see Lily Rabe all sweaty and screaming this is not what i meant.

Dude c'mon that came from your wife's vajayjay, what the hell is wrong with you?

"Gaslight" is a great, accurate title for this episode, they're gonna gaslight the hell out of Doris and even tho i like dark stuff, my soft side is winning, she doesn't deserve it.

He outgrew the mother of his children? I love Finn but Harry must be one of the most hateful characters so far.

The two most endearing, loving characters played by two of the best actresses in this show getting the saddest fates... Bitter but poetic.

I think is interesting when the bad guys win and this is a horror show so it's fine but the bad guys here are so unlikeable that i just want Doris to eat them one by one.

GENERAL THOUGHTS:

I loved this episode but we all saw it coming.

I was expecting a major plot twist or something but they literally show us this in the main trailer, it feels like they're not trying anymore, but it was awesome, devastating and dark. Probably one of my favorite episodes of the whole show.

As i said, i think the bad guys winning is kinda cool but i really hate this bad guys. Awful characters this season, i hope Austin and Belle kill all those (quoting TB Karen) motherfuckers!

Lily Rabe, Frances Conroy and Sarah Paulson deserve all the nominations to all the awards, especially Lily Rabe, if you ever doubted about her talent, well, there you go. Amazing actress.
