Cub kept calling the Burning Dark some kind of ethereal plane and I finally figured out what the aesthetic reminded me of: the top of Cub's pyramid in s7, but with a darker block palette (and plenty of skulk).
It's like Field of Reeds (good) vs Lake of Fire (bad) afterworld places or something like that. idk Decked Out has driven me insane don't mind me. >_>

why are there so many korean webtoon things that decide it would be great to have all this super fantasy shit but then make the setting modern day korea??
Like sure it sounds interesting but once you get to the third copy paste of Solo Leveling you wanna strangle these writers. YOU HAD GREAT IDEAS AND ART BUT DECIDED TO TRY AND COPY A UNIQUE SCENARIO UNTIL IT WASNT UNIQUE!!!!
I click on a thing with cool fantasy art but if i see a skyscraper on the first page I will not read any further
Isekai shit is semi tolerable imo but modern day magic in some normal ass city - thats where i draw the line

say more about gale and cazador right now please?
all I'm saying is that in the context of bloodweave and assuming that Cazador has some means of tracking the gang (which is plausible, once they reach the city), snatching Gale could be one of the first measures to bait Astarion back to his palace. of course Cazador would figure out this gap on Astarion's armor, he's known him for two centuries, he sees the turmoil and the care and – gods forbid – the affection.
say it's a late night out, for example. maybe Astarion got a secondhand buzz going, but he's definitely invested in seeing Gale cut loose. just a little. after all, he's never known wizards to be particularly adventurous in their explorations of physical, chemical influences. seems like it would be interesting (telling, even, of what dark urges hide behind warm smiles and boisterous language). say they hit up the Blushing Mermaid, since Gale wouldn't be tempted by Sharess' Caress. anything is more comfortable than the Elfsong, if you ask Astarion.
Cazador's spawn are thoroughly conditioned and highly trained to know just the right buttons to push, strings to pluck, vices to encourage. maybe Cazador sets one of them on him, a specific "bring him back to me and you will earn my favor" type, because this is how one gets under Astarion's skin. to this old sibling of his, Gale is just another mark. they don't know. they can't know.
and how can Astarion intervene without giving himself up? or worse, maybe his attention is drawn elsewhere when Gale slips out the back with a face that would have been familiar, had Astarion only seen it. if their relationship is mostly tension at this point, so Astarion notes Gale's absence and opts to rationalize it as "oh, he must have found someone else to lose himself in tonight". if there's fear ingrained in that, just by virtue of being in Baldur's Gate. so when Cazador's next nighttime psychic horror visit comes, it's confirming the worst-case scenario.
then the wondering. what's been done and what's yet to come. has Gale been made a spawn, and if he has, then is the tadpole protecting him, or has that beautiful mind of his been cramped into the confines of Cazador's demands? is he locked in a dungeon cell, being conditioned for the eternity to come? if there is eternity to come, then is the orb stabilized, is it safe, will he live–. is it better or worse, to know what he might go through or to wonder what the alternative might be? if he's been kept mortal, but tortured for torture's sake? or used for the others' training?
and then Gale. poor, sweet Gale, dropped into the hellscape that's been Astarion's life*, knowing why he's there, knowing that he's bait. shutting out every pulse of the tadpole so no one sees, no one knows, but most of all so Astarion doesn't feel obligated to save him. his life is forfeit anyway. for all this pain, the most important thing is to keep it from bleeding through his psychic connection with Astarion. Astarion, who finally found freedom, tasted joy, clung to kindness like its supply was finite.
because the worst case scenario in Gale's mind is that he dies, and then he explodes.
and the worst case in Astarion's mind is that Gale can never die, and then they're the same.

Dystopian AU Fics Masterlist
2164: An Uncharted Odyssey (ao3) - shetlandowl steve/tony M, 31k
Summary: Following the devastation at the Triskellion in D.C., Steve is convicted for criminally negligent manslaughter and, like Rumlow, he sentenced to serve dozens of consecutive life sentences in Cryo-Prison.
It is the year 2164. Violence of any kind is a nightmare long forgotten, and people live in a harmonious and pacifist paradise under the benevolent philosophy and leadership of their Governor. A series of events that nobody can account for leads to Rumlow’s escape from Cryo-Prison. After decades of peace, the law enforcement of New Yorseylvania is a mellow, gentle group of men and women who are at a loss for how to control this homicidal maniac. Tony Stark, a police lieutenant and life-long fan of the vigorous 21st century hero, suggests Captain America’s immediate reinstatement. With no better alternatives, the Captain is thawed for probation and reinstated to apprehend Crossbones once again.
A Dystopian Romance (ao3) - crescent_gaia steve/tony, bucky/steve/tony, clint/natasha T, 12k
Summary: In an alternate universe, the Senate, in it's infinite wisdom, decided to pass an act that made anybody with superpowers an enemy of the state if decided upon by a committee headed by Senator Stern. After the events of Iron Man 3 and Winter Soldier, Tony Stark and Steve Rogers are declared such enemies along with Natasha Romanov and Clint Barton.
A Harp of Gold (ao3) - cakeisnotpie clint/phil, steve/tony, bucky/natasha M, 80k
Summary: What could go wrong with volunteering for a simple science experiment? Clint Barton, a starving musician and striving Olympic archer, is about to find out. Hyperspace and time travel give way to magic and music as Clint, along with with his friends, finds himself cast forward into a future very different than what he imagined.
Harpers, Paladins, Mages, Healers, and Thieves ... Imagine a time travel story meets dystopian future meets Dungeons and Dragons campaign. With a sexy Master Harper Phil Coulson and lots of dirty lyrics and songs about sex. Oh, and some Tony/Steve, Bruce/Betty, and Natasha/Bucky to sweeten the pot. Yeah, that's the pitch.
A Productive Member of Society (ao3) - buckybleeds steve/bucky, steve/brock, hydra agents/steve E, 10k
Summary: In a dystopian capitalist hellscape HydraCorp has a way of making criminals pay for their violence against capital.
Or: The one where Steve is Forcibly Genetically Modified Into A Cow for Ten Thousand Words
At Night, Alone (ao3) - TenSpencerRiedPlease peter/tony, minor steve/tony N/R, 23k
Summary: There were rules with soul mates and Tony never desired following them really. He liked being in charge of his own life, taking responsibility for the events that happen in it but soul mates didn’t work like that. When you found them marriage was imminent and thanks to the low glow of your eyes it was next to impossible to avoid people finding out. So he and Steve were shuffled off to the nearest City Hall office and married off right away.
Pepper had been a good sport about it; she had even acted as Tony’s bride’s maid. Tony always thought that was overkill but this was Pepper, she never did anything half assed. He had waited, for months he waited before giving up, but none of that Hollywood inspired bullshit ever happened. There was no moment when he and Steve ‘just clicked’, there was no warmth when they looked at each other, there was nothing.
City of Angels (ao3) - Kinthinia clint/phil, steve/bucky, bruce/tony M, 119k
Summary: On the verge of turning fifteen, Clint Barton is sold to Hydra. For the next six years, Clint's identity is slowly stripped away as both the infamous Swordsman and the Winter Soldier train him into the elite assassin Ronin. But through the slow torture, Clint hangs onto the idea of freedom -of escaping from Hydra. With Bucky's help, the two of them manage to escape. Not even six months into his new found freedom and Clint realizes he has to trade one collar for another in order to save his only friend. Except, S.H.I.E.L.D. is nothing like what Clint was expecting, especially not his handler.
Constructs in Progress (ao3) - Muccamukk natalia romanova/steve/tony E, 29k
Summary: In the seven territories built out of the ruins of New York City, no one has managed to match Tony Stark as either a technologist or a unicorn rider. But when Tony's secrets come back to haunt him, even Captain Rogers and his mysterious lover might not be able to save him, or the city.
Edited to Add (ao3) - Desiderii pepper/steve/tony E, 2k
Summary: Pepper, Steve, and Tony are on assignment in the Midwest, it's damn fucking hot, and their safehouse apartment is barely big enough for one.

it's a long shot, but- (ao3) - Anonymous steve/tony T, 6k
Summary: “He’s in the dangerous second phase of lovesickness,” Bruce says, straight-faced as Tony twitches behind him. “The third is refusal to eat, which can lead to death by starvation if the condition isn’t rectified immediately.”
General Ki growls, the sound coming like static between his oddly-shaped jaw and even odder teeth. “Skri- Stark is an invaluable asset to the empire! This illness must be eradicated immediately, Dr. Banner. What is the cure?”
“A mate,” Bruce says, re-adjusting his glasses. “Skri-Stark must be paired with a mate, and soon. If not, he will succumb within several weeks.”
(Or, the world has fallen to aliens and Steve and Tony come up with a plan to take it back.)
Prima Nocta (ao3) - Dira Sudis (dsudis) M, 19k

This is the night sex slave #32557038 is given to a new master and finds out what is expected of him. This is the night Tony saves two slaves and doesn't tell them any comforting lies like "You're free now."
The Blood-Dimmed Tide (ao3) - of_raven_wings darcy/loki M, 134k
Summary: In penance for his actions, Loki has been sent back to Earth and imprisoned beneath Stark Tower. New York has been shattered by the Chitauri attack, most of its populace scattered to other parts of the country. Those who remain in the city are struggling to survive as the world slides towards economic and political chaos. Darcy Lewis is one of those who chose to remain. Now an intern with Stark Industries, she is unexpectedly assigned to watch over Loki. More unexpected, she begins to share his dreams and memories.

this tired world (could change) (ao3) - AMidnightDreary, SalamanderArt (SalamanderInk) loki/tony E, 57k
Summary: Tony makes a deal with one of the oldest vampires known to mankind. What could go wrong? (Spoiler alert: a lot.)
Unveil My Unsightly Heart (ao3) - Mizzy steve/tony M, 43k
Summary: Looking over an old prototype helicarrier for its future viability as a base for the Avengers should have just been a routine day full of bickering and non-adventure for Steve Rogers and Tony Stark.
But when they're catapulted into an alternate universe – where their alternate selves are married and battling with a mysterious threat – the two are forced to get over their differences in order to figure out what's going on, before it's too late.
Because there's more going on than meets the eye, and Steve and Tony falling in love might just be the most dangerous thing that can happen. Not just for one universe, but for all of them… [Iron Man 3-compliant.]
You Gave Me A Home (ao3) - Moonrose001 steve/tony E, 101k
Summary: Since Registration passed on and Sentinels started guarding the streets instead of superheroes, the USA has come to resemble Dystopia more than an united country. A young group of masked teenagers are fighting back the undemocratic and unconstitutional ways, lead by Captain America.
And Steve Rogers is a handsome, but awkward student leading a double life. He is also head and heels in love with Tony Stark, the son of the government's arms dealer.

How about a Yandere! Monster Mimic, where falling in love with a human reader...
(The mimic is a shapeshifting monster that can transform into an object or anyone it has seen, of course it can revert to its true amorphous form if it wants to.)
tw - unhealthy relationships, forced codependence, obsessive behavior, isolation, and slight monster-fucking.
i know i've been writing a lot of dungeon stuff lately, but,,, what if they were trapped in a dungeon, though 👀
just imagine it. you're defenseless, terrified, alone and confused and lost in a dungeon that just seems to keep spiraling downward, without end, without a path to take that doesn't lead you to another monster, another trap. you used to have a team, a group of people more capable and more prepared than you could ever be, but they're gone, now, and you're on your own, wandering endlessly in hopes of finding an exit, a way out that doesn't involve a missing limb or your bones in the den of some drooling, snarling beast. that's how they find you - exhausted and injured, seeking shelter in the empty shelter they already had a claim on. you're scared, at first, reluctant to let them come near you, but you calm down after they explain that they're an adventurer, too, that they're just as lost as you are, just as desperate as you are. that they're alone, too. that they don't want to be, anymore.
they're nice enough, too polite and too worried about driving you away to be anything but kind, sweet, prone to letting you have the first pick of weaponry pried out of ancient chests, the first cut of the supplies you two come across every now and then, locked away in forgotten crates and torn out of pack dropped by explorers less lucky than the two of you. they seem skittish, sometimes, stuttering over hazy memories of their life before the dungeon, hesitating to touch you, even if it's only a brush of their fingertips against your wrist or the press of their thigh against yours, but it makes sense. they've been down here for months, maybe longer - they've really told you, not that you've ever really asked. they're still not used to being around other people, even if you can tell they want to be, even if you can tell that they wouldn't shy away from you, if they had a choice. they like you, they're just not quiet sure how to show it, yet.
they do worry you, sometimes, just sometimes. they rarely sleep, a symptom of new insomnia and old paranoia, and you can't remember the last time they ate anything more than a few bites of your sparse rations, despite never seeming hungry or thirsty or worn-down. it might just be a trick of the light, but their features look... odd, every now and then, their nose too crooked, their eyes too dark, their shy smile just a little too wide, their teeth just a little too sharp. their skin always feels cold, no matter the conditions you're weathering, and you can swear that you've never seen them bruised, never injured by anything but blades and burns. when they talk about what it was like before they found you, when you can coax out more than a few words, their diction is still plain, their descriptions still vague, but they tend to get excited, as they go on, more willing to talk about how they feel, how glad they are that you're here, now, how much better it is, now that you're here. you worry about them. you worry about how tightly they hold you, about how intensely they stare, when they think you won't notice, or when they forget to care.
you worry that, when you finally find a way out of this hellscape, they may not want to let you go.

Suptober20 - Day 28 Hellscape
Fic Summary: Among Us Crossover AU where Dean is a crewmate headed to the Polus outpost on the frozen hellscape of Mars. But he may not make it there alive, because someone in their crew is an imposter that enjoys chopping humans into small pieces.
Dean opens the electrical panel in the navigation room, and reaches in to his toolbox for a voltage detector. He wills his hands to be steady, but he is a nervous wreck. Dean is worried about the success of this mission, the safety of his crewmates, and his chances of survival. He is on a supposedly routine mission to prepare the latest Mars colony for habitation, but his crewmates keep getting chopped into pieces. Out of the original ten person crew, only seven are still alive.   The PA system crackles to life, "Dead body reported! Dead body reported!" Dean dashes to the cafeteria where the rest of his crewmates have gathered to discuss.   "I saw Kelly standing over the dead body!" Kaia yells.   "I was upset! Donatello had been cut in half. I'll try to remember to skip the tears after you get murdered," Kelly responds.   "Kelly sounds pretty sus to me," Benny sneers.   "Where was the body found?" Castiel asks.   "In the reactor room," Kaia replies.   "Okay, everyone listen up! Someone in this room is an imposter masquerading among us, and it falls on us to discover the truth and identify the cold-blooded killer before they can strike again," Kevin tells his crewmates.   "Jeez, shouldn't we just turn around and head back to Earth," Dean speaks up.   "No, we can handle this ourselves Dean. We can jettison the murderer into space, and then do our mission. Let’s keep it democratic, everyone will have a chance to vote for who they think the murderer is," Kevin speaks authoritatively, but Dean just shakes his head in disbelief.   "I vote Kelly," Castiel says.   "Well, I vote Castiel," Kelly says with icy disdain.   "Kelly," Benny states.   "Kelly," Kaia says.   "Yeah, I think Kelly too." Kevin says.   Everyone looks to Dean to cast his vote. "What? It sounds like you've already decided," Dean complains.   "Everyone has to vote Dean." Kevin tells him.
**
"Okay, I vote Castiel," Dean says. Just something about Castiel seems a little bit off. Like he's playing at being human, but doesn't quite understand the rules. Of course, he could just be socially awkward, and if that is the case, then Dean feels pretty lousy of accusing him of murder.   "It's decided then,” Kevin says matter of factly. “Kelly has been found guilty by the majority of her peers, so by the authority granted to me by the HostCorp you will be executed by ejection into the vacuum of space. May God have mercy on your soul."   Kelly resists, but she is roughly pushed into the decompression chamber that provides ingress and egress for the spaceship. Dean watches her face stare back at them haughtily. Kevin opens the outer bay doors, and her body is sucked into the void of space.   "Great, now that the murderer is gone. We all have tasks to do. Let's get them done so we can make safe landing on Mars," Kevin commands the crew. ~~   Maybe Kevin had been right after all, Dean thinks to himself. The ship had just landed safely on the Polus station on Mars. And after sending Kelly into space, there had been no more murders although there had been a couple close calls with damaged systems. For instance, the O2 system failed and they just managed to get it rebooted before they all died of oxygen deprivation. Then the reactor had nearly melted down, which would also have caused the catastrophic death of the entire crew. But the cursed crew managed to land at the outpost against all odds.    "I'm going to report to HQ. Check your tablets for your tasks crewmates," Kevin tells everyone after they disembark the spaceship.   Dean looks out at the frozen wasteland of Polus. The space station is on the northern pole of Mars, and it reminds him of the old expression of "when hell freezes over." He powers up his tablet, and pulls up his task list.   One of the tasks catches his eye, "Monitor Tree." That sounds like an easy, short task to knock out first. And he is feeling sentimental about getting to see things from Earth like a tree and grass. Dean pulls up his map to find the O2 laboratory, so he can find his way around the unfamiliar outpost.   Dean enters the O2 lab, and he breathes in deeply the fresh air from the vegetation. He walks up to the monitor panel and makes the necessary adjustments to bring the readings to the specified levels. He then turns to look at his next task, but he catches some unexpected motion out of the corner of his eye.   "Uh, hey Cas. How did you just vent out of that hole? That seems like a pretty impossible thing to be able to do," Dean rambles nervously to the crewmember that just apparated into the room over a hole in the ground. Apparently, Kelly was innocent, because Dean feels certain that Castiel is not what he seems. And Dean is certain he is about to be the imposter’s next victim.   "I didn't realize that task was so short," Castiel admits. "But that doesn't matter for you. I hope you had a good life Dean, and if you didn’t you can feel glad that you won’t ever have to suffer again. Your death will be swift and mostly painless, and I think you will find me more merciful than many members of your own species."   "So you're not human?" Dean tries to delay the inevitable with banter while he looks around wildly for some kind of weapon.   "No, I am an angel of the lord. You are just perceiving my vessel, Jimmy Novak," Castiel replies.   "Oh, well your vessel is pretty hot," Dean hopes this imposter can be diverted by flirting.   "No, the temperature of my vessel is 37 degrees Celsius or 98.7 degrees Fahrenheit. That is within normal range for a human." Castiel tells Dean.   "I meant you're vessel is very attractive," Dean can't tell if the angel is messing with him or not. But he thinks anything is better than getting chopped into pieces, so he can play along if that gives him a chance to prolong his life.   "I'm above mundane things like physical attraction, Dean," Castiel says. "I just like killing humans for sport, but Heaven usually notices, and then I get thrown in the dungeon to stew for a millenia or two. But Heaven doesn't seem to care what happens to humans outside of Earth."   "That sounds very clever of you to figure out Cas," Dean tells Castiel.   "Yes, I do like to think of myself as the cleverest angel of the garrison," Castiel puffs up with pride and nods in agreement with Dean.   "Can I ask why kill humans for sport? Can't you take up frisbee golf or something else less homicidal?" Dean asks the imposter.   "I was given the task of watching humanity a long, long time ago. And humans can be so boring. So I just randomly kill a bunch every now and then. There is no malice in my actions. I just consider humanity to be on the level of ants, but maybe lower because I actually have a fondness for insects." Castiel discloses to Dean.   "That sounds very reasonable, Cas. But you know some humans can be the total opposite of boring," Dean says while considering his next move. Okay, Dean thinks, if movies have taught me anything, it’s that getting a villain to monologue usually gives the good guy a chance to win. If he can just get Castiel to ramble, he can probably escape alive and report Castiel to the crew or maybe even slay the imposter himself.   "I suppose you want me to believe you are one of those non-boring humans," Castiel comments and tilts his head to one side considering Dean.   "Yup! Today is your lucky day, Cas. Because I am the most non-boring human since the dawn of Creation." Dean sells his lie with confidence. He would have thought his life before was very boring, but how many humans have to outsmart a homicidal angel. Maybe he is more non-boring than he realized.   "Okay, I'm waiting to be entertained." Castiel tells Dean.   Shit, this guy just doesn't want to monologue, Dean thinks to himself. So Dean needs some way to entertain an angel before he becomes sliced and diced all over the O2 laboratory. He vaguely remembers a story about a lady that had to tell her captor 1,001 tales to avoid death. Maybe if he can tell enough stories he can make it off this Hell rock in one piece after all.   "Have you ever heard the tale of the Killer Stuffed Dinosaur in Love?" Dean asks the imposter.   "No, but I'll admit it does sound entertaining," Castiel relaxes and sits in the grass with his legs criss-crossed, and looks expectantly at Dean to start.   Dean begins to weave his story, and keeps careful watch of Castiel. He vigilantly watches the angel for some sign of momentary distraction, so he can seize the chance to raise an alarm or make a run for it. But in the meantime, he remembers back to storytime with his mom. When he and his brother would sit up in their beds to listen to their mom tell fantastic stories about witches, vampires, ghouls, wendigos, demons, ghosts, werewolves, fairies, and magic. And his mom told them with such love and care that he never felt bored by them. On the contrary, they were warm, fluffy comforts when reality did the best to beat him down. If anything could save him now, he was hopeful it would be the love of his mother that would keep him safe from the homicidal monster waiting for him to fail.   “Dead body reported!” the PA system crackles.    “Umm... is there more than one of you on this outpost?” Dean asks Castiel.   “No, but I did kill Benny before venting into the O2 lab,” Castiel confesses. “I am hoping I can rely on your discretion at the discussion.”   “Uh, sure Cas,” Dean lies.   Castiel disappears through the hole in the ground somehow. Dean walks over to the hole in the ground, but nothing magical happens to help him teleport through it. Dean decides lying to a homicidal angel is okay, because he is going to meet up with his crew and tell everyone Castiel is in fact the imposter.   Dean is the last crewmate to join the discussion.    “So there is only four of us left, Kaia was with me until we stumbled on Benny’s body. So the murderer must be Castiel or Dean,” Kevin declares.   “Maybe he died of natural causes,” Castiel suggests.   “Really? You think his body naturally got sliced to ribbons?” Kaia shouts.   “Uh, it seems possible, even if it’s not probable.” Castiel says thoughtfully.   “Guys, it was Castiel. He has been the imposter all along. He was going to kill me in the O2 laboratory,” Dean tells the crew. Castiel cocks an eyebrow at Dean, but says nothing in his own defense.   “I don’t know Dean. I think the murderer would be eager to cast shade on other crew mates. How do we know we can trust you?” Kevin says.   “I can’t believe you have been chopping up people Dean. What kind of a person does that!?!” Kaia shakes her head in disapproval.   “Look! I’m telling you the truth. Castiel is an Angel of the Lord, and he is supposed to be watching humanity. But I guess he thinks watching humanity like a reality tv show is boring, so he likes to mix things up with murder sprees,” Dean tells them.   “That is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard, Dean,” Kevin says.   “I vote Dean,” Kaia says.   “I vote Castiel of course!” Dean tells the crew passionately.   “I vote Dean,” Kevin says.   “I vote Kevin,” Castiel tells the crew.   “Dean, you have been found--”, Kevin begins, but is interrupted by getting murdered by Castiel.   “Oh shit! Castiel was the imposter!” Kaia runs screaming out of the room.   Dean is not sure what just happened. Did Castiel save him from death by space vacuum, or did his bloodthirsty tendencies just kick in? Dean wonders. Dean stumbles out of the room, and sees Castiel standing over the corpse of Kaia.    “So, Cas... any reason in particular why you killed my crewmates?” Dean asks the angel.   “They were going to execute you. They were not fit to be your judge and executioner,” Castiel says. “You bravely spoke the truth, even though I had threatened your life. It reminded me of the dinosaur, in your story, that bravely stood up to the menacing spider king to save the trans princess after she had been cursed into the shape of a frog. Although, I think the princess should have been able to save herself, a frog should be able to eat a spider.”   “Well, it was a very large spider,” Dean laughs. It was kind of nice that the killer angel had in fact been paying attention to his fairy tale made up in desperation.    “So, what happens now Castiel?” Dean asks the homicidal angel.   “I don’t know. I had expected to have been ejected out of the space station by now, but the vacuum of space won’t kill me. There are very few things that will kill an angel,” Castiel muses.    “I don’t suppose you will tell me about the things that can kill an angel,” Dean says doubtfully.   “Stabbed in a vital area by an angel blade, attempting to exit a ring of holy fire, certain spells from a powerful enough book of witchcraft, a stronger cosmic being like leviathans, archangels, Death, God, Darkness, or the Cosmic Entity,” Castiel enumerates the means of his destruction.   “Darn, it appears I left my leviathan in my other pants. I guess you win this round Castiel. Uh, thanks for saving me for last I guess. Do you think I will go to Heaven?” Dean asks. “My mother, she passed away, and she was such a kind person I’m sure she is in Heaven. Sometimes I feel like she is just behind me watching over me, and if I can just turn fast enough I will catch a glimpse of her.”   “That’s a nice sentiment Dean,” Castiel says. “But I’m not able to predict where human souls will go when their physical body is dead. I am also not fit to be anyone’s judge. But I can check if your mother, Mary Winchester, is in Heaven.”   Castiel disappears before Dean gets a chance to ask how the angel knew his mother’s name, but maybe that was just an angel thing. Dean heads to the maintenance shed to get a shovel. He wants to dig suitable graves for Kevin and Kaia. Paying his respects is the most he can do for them now.   Dean is patting the soil flat on top of the graves after burying his crewmates, and he wonders if Castiel is ever planning on coming back or if he found more unsuspecting humans to murder. He decides to go back to the O2 lab and rest under the tree. The lab is comforting and fills his thoughts with childhood memories of climbing trees with Sammy in the woods and late nights playing manhunt with the neighbors. Castiel would definitely find his childhood version of manhunt boring, basically it was just hide and seek in the dark, but when you were a kid late nights outside just felt liberating.    “You’re mother and father are in a shared Heaven, Dean,” Castiel reports.   “Oh, hey Cas,” Dean looks up from where he was dozing by the roots. “Thanks for looking into it for me. I think I’m ready to be killed now. I know you can’t tell me where my soul will go, but I’m at peace with this being the end. I would have liked a longer life, but no one ever promised me life was fair. And I have had a really good life so far. Just try to look out for Sam Winchester if you can. Maybe I can call him one more time and warn him to stay out of space, so you don’t end up hunting him during one of your murder sprees. I’d rather he lived a long time and died an old man.”   “That’s not necessary Dean,” Castiel says staring down at where Dean is still dozing. “I think I will give murder a break. I would have stopped earlier, but Kaia and Kevin presented a threat to your safety.”   “Okay, Cas,” Dean says unsure how much he can trust the words of this cold-blooded angel. “I think it’s very nice of you to give up killing humans for a bit. Did I tell you my brother Sammy gave up eating meat? He’s a vegetarian. I think you would really like Sammy, because everyone likes him. He is the best man I have ever known.”   “He sounds very impressive then,” Castiel agrees.   “If you don’t feel like killing me, are we just going to keep hanging out together on Polus?” Dean asks.   “I guess so,” Castiel nods. “I haven’t really thought things through.”   “Okay, I’m really beat after everything today Cas. I need to get some sleep,” Dean says while stifling a yawn.   “I’ll watch over you then,” Castiel says.   “That is so random of you Cas,” Dean mumbles. “How did you just go from angel of death to guardian angel? I’m not complaining though, I like being alive. I definitely prefer being alive with guardian angel beside me to dead with killer angel beside me.”   “Here Dean, I got you a pillow and blanket. I think these things make sleeping more comfortable for humans,” Castiel drops the mentioned objects where Dean is laying down.   “Yeah, your thinking was right. Very comfortable for humans,” Dean mumbles as he wraps himself into a cocoon in the blanket. “Today was so random. If I wake up and you kill me tomorrow, no hard feelings okay Cas? Like I’m not going to pretend I’m something special and that a crazy, killer angel would be reformed after having one conversation with me.”   “Okay, Dean that seems fair,” Castiel nods. Then Castiel sits in the grass besides Dean, and he watches over the human as he snores peacefully. Hanging out with Dean sounded like a nice change of pace for the killer angel. And he cast out his mind to pinpoint where Sam Winchester was on Earth. It sounded like the health and safety of Sam was important to Dean, so that made it important to Castiel, too.

Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon is basically OK
Recently, I’ve partaken in some kind of cultural exchange with a friend of mine- namely, I’ve lent her my copies of the Scott Pilgrim novels (god do they kick ass), and she’s lent me her copy of Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon, seeing as I never played it at the time.
Tumblr media
Well I’ve now beaten this game, and I have some thoughts about it, so chop chop Keara the story isn’t getting any younger I expect a full book report on my desk next Sunday.
Jokes aside, this was my first experience with a PMD game since Sky (discounting the demo for Gates to Infinity), and having missed the series’s third entry (fourth if you count those Japan-only WiiWare games), it’d be remiss of me not to at least mention that maybe some of the things I’m going to complain about were originally that game’s fault. But apparently that one actively sucks ass so who cares, just shift the blame over, eh?
Tumblr media
(ah, primary-school-tier bullying, exactly what I want in my Pokemon game, cool)
I think one of the foremost issues people have about PSMD is the story, and I can’t help but agree. The game spends what feels like forever fucking about in Serene Village, doing what could charitably described as tutorial followed by slice-of-life-ish plots, and while I love me a good slice-of-life anime, those tend to be a lot less slow than this. Also the characters tend to be a lot less one-note, but it’s a kids game, so whatever. Speaking of kids, this to my knowledge is the only PMD game where you and your partner character are canonically children, and spend a lot of time around others. The game seems to establish unevolved Pokemon as kids, which while it doesn’t really add up with the rest of the series (e.g. in the first ones, Caterpie is clearly a child, but Metapod is as well and Gulpin is at least adult enough to run their own store), it would ultimately be excusable if it didn’t make that huge section of the game so boring.
They aren’t consistent with that kids thing, by the way. When you finally reach the Expedition society, you’re met with a bunch of unevolved Pokemon (Archen, Buizel, Bunnelby, Swirlix) that are running around behaving very youthfully, who then turn around and go hey we don’t allow kids in our gang please leave. Like, the plot had been leading me to believe that the whole place was shut down, Ampharos as its final member, and those kids were just running around an abandoned building, but nope, here are your teammates for the rest of the game.
Tumblr media
(brown sus)
The remainder of the plot is basically fine, its not like the plots in this series are the greatest on the planet (save maybe Explorers), though the focus on the villains turning people into stone felt pretty awkward. It’s like they wanted to pull off a more dramatic, more personal-stakesy plot but couldn’t actually kill anyone. This gets kind of egregious when you end up in actual hell for a bit, in what I guess is the series tradition of potentially traumatic experiences and blasted hellscapes being exposed to the protagonists. The endgame plot all seems to come at you at once, not helped by it being lots of chained dungeons without returning to towns beforehand- it wouldn’t be as bad if the whole game was like this, but with such a slow start, it just feels so inconsistent. The endgame twist was pretty spicy, I’ll admit, but it didn’t have enough buildup to feel earned in my honest opinion.
Tumblr media
(pictured: the best character in the game)
But the plot doesn’t matter so much as the gameplay does it? And as someone who has also concurrently been playing through the first Pokemon Mystery Dungeon game on my GBA, there’s a lot of interesting comparisons to make. The dungeons on the whole are shorter in PSMD, with few of the main-game ones reaching beyond 10 floors (and not going much past it) compared to the prequels’ capping off with a 25+5 floor behemoth in Sky Tower. This is made up for by every floor of the dungeons in PSMD feeling much larger and more labyrinthine than anything in other PMD games, meaning each one takes much longer than you’d think. I dread to imagine what the 99-floor dungeons are like in this game, especially considering you now need an item to quicksave the game if you want to do anything else now. The dungeons themselves additionally really do not feel like they’ve taken advantage of the 9 years of potential design improvements and two console generations of technology improvements between games- it is frustratingly same-old same-old in the dungeon design.
These problems are capped off with the increased difficulty- that is, that every individual Pokemon is significantly more of a threat to you than in previous games, and you don’t really get the opportunity to level grind much. And I’m not opposed to difficulty in games, obviously, but what it does in PSMD is ruin the flow of the gameplay for me. What works in Mystery Dungeons previous was that blend of exploration and combat, and in Super, that gets completely broken up by protracted encounters with even the chump-tier mons you encounter along the way. Also, they made the basic attack complete shit, and I don’t like that.
Tumblr media
That’s not to say that the gameplay is all bad. I won’t comment too heavily on the Looplet/Emera system, because I’m kinda mid on it, but it didn’t help that despite all the game’s tutorialising I still didn’t get part of it until most of the way through the story. The game does have some moments of genuine brilliance in design, though. The way you recruit more Pokemon is so much better than the luck-based mission of the previous games, wihle managing to actually make you want to go on the random missions you get thrown throughout the game- for one thing they aren’t random, but it means you have a guaranteed good reward instead of the semi-RNG system where you just end up with a bunch of Gravelerocks and berries you’ll never use. In addition, the system where on non-plot days (and in the postgame) you just get 3 random Pokemon recommended to you, that get bonus EXP if you use them that day, is a great way of encouraging the player to diversify their Pokemon usage substantially, which is nice.
Tumblr media
There’s a few other nice gameplay things I’d like to highlight. Considering the increased difficulty, the ability to rescue yourself (read: come back with the overpowered mons the game dropped in your lap) is really nice, especially since it’s not like anyone else is playing these games who can help. The way moves get better the more you use them is nice, especially considering how much more you use one move over and over in this game compared to main series Pokemon games. The random bonus missions and travelling mons you encounter in dungeons are nice, as well as the increased variety in missions available- as well as actually being able to revive fallen escortees, it makes the mission system overall much stronger than in previous entries.
Beyond that, though, I’m not sure what else I have to say about Super Mystery Dungeon. The game is a decent entry in what can barely be called a franchise these days, considering it’s 6 years old and yet still the newest entry, excluding the remake of the first ones that came out last year. It’d be a shame if this was the note we went out on for Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, but to be fair, I don’t think they’re ever going to be able to recapture the magic of the first two games. They struck gold with a lot of people, but I guess at this point, the gleam wore off.

Oooooo I’m so glad your ask box is open and I was wondering if I could get the Org playing Dungeons & Dragons if possible? Tysm!
like five hundred people requested this lmao
This is just a bunch of headcanons that were tossed together by the Discord babes in the middle of the night because they were bored and inspired. I hope you all enjoy it!
-
Xemnas is always and forever the DM and he refuses to be anything else. He enjoys making the incredibly detailed plots and storylines, even if the other players sometimes go a little too wild. He enjoys making sure that everyone else who plays goes through a carefully calculated hellscape.
On those very very very V E R Y rare moments when Xemnas is roped into playing and isn’t the DM, his character always has high charisma and intelligence. Charisma because he wants to be able to keep people following him; intelligence because he wants to take over the world.
When Xemnas isn’t playing, Zexion likes to DM. He comes up with some amazingly unique ideas and has a small booklet that he keeps with all of his plots so he doesn’t confuse himself. Xemnas prefers to be the one to DM, but everyone else prefers Zexion.
Vexen is the frustrated cleric who doesn’t want to play but everyone else wanted him to at least sit at the table because the team needed a healer. Once he gets into it, he goes pretty apeshit because he knows that the others are making terrible decisions.
Xigbar didn’t like the game until he realized he could be the biggest troll in the game. Tries to seduce everyone. Like literally everyone and everything.
Demyx plays as a chaotic neutral bard. He enjoys it, but he also gets distracted pretty easily, so he sometimes zones out and only pays attention when it’s his turn. He does like it, though, because it makes him feel useful to play.
Saix isn’t interested in the role playing aspect, so he’ll just sit in, roll the dice, and let Axel take control of his character if he’s feeling generous. He didn’t start joining in on the games until the rest had been playing for a long time, so he’s still a bit shaky on how the game is played. “How can there not be any rules? What do you MEAN I can just do anything?”
Axel plays as a tiefling or even a red dragonborn. He only joins in because Roxas and Xion convince him to give it a try, but he ends up seriously enjoying the fantasy/role-playing aspect. He gets really into it, and is actually one of the only ones who takes it seriously.
Luxord really enjoys the game, but he doesn’t play very often. He likes rolling the dice and how everything is heavily based on chance, but he gets too into it sometimes so he has to take a few steps back and sit out a game every once in a while. Every ability check is a gamble and he likes that, but sometimes he has to take a few deep breaths and remember that it is just a game.
Lexaeus and Xaldin play when they get a chance to, but only if they don’t have anything else to do. Lexaeus always plays as a half-orc/barbarian and Xaldin tends to lean toward being a shifter/fighter. They tend to sit back and let the others in their group make the big decisions, but they’re always ready to fight a monster if need be.
Larxene and Marluxia think that the rest of them are all nerds, but they’ll play with the right incentive. They both like to play as flirtatious drows. Marluxia is flirtatious with the males and Larxene with those who identify as females. Larxene is also a great strategist, so she always comes up with really great plans and battle strategies when she really puts her mind to it.
“Xigbar the Dragon Fucker“ “Xigbar, you can’t say that kind of shit in front of the kids“

My brief thoughts on this season of anime!
Just a quick review of the ones I’d recommend and/or keep watching. I managed to find all of the below on Funimation or Crunchyroll or Youtube!
Horymia: (Yes) This is looking to be a very funny romcom slice of life style anime, and seems to be a fairly good one! Had me laughing a lot. The Main couple are a nerdy quiet boy who’s actually dumb as a sack of bricks using his disheveled appearance to hide his tattoos and piercings, and a popular pretty girl who’s actually a total homebody. Their friends seem to have a lot of potential to be fleshed out as the series progresses and I look forward to seeing how it goes!
So I’m a Spider, So What?: (Yes) Whooo another isekai (excited)! This time a girl and her entire class!? Get isekai’d in a massive explosion. The main character reincarnates as a trash monster in a dungeon and must fight her way up the food chain just to survive. Meanwhile her friends who have mostly reincarnated as Cool Humans or the occasional elf or baby dragon, have mostly found each other, and want to figure out what happened/why and if they’re all okay. It’s genuinely pretty funny, though leans a little too hard sometimes on the gamey aspects of this new world. I think it may get darker as it goes along too.
Mushoku Tensei: (No) Whooo another isekai (derogatory). 34 yo old man gets reincarnated and uses his worldly experience to Learn Magic Fast and creep on his mom and prepubescent tutor. If you can stomach that stuff, it actually has a fair amount of potential? It did set itself up to touch on some interesting stuff down the road, but I’m kind of Over the horny toddler/young boy trope and it kinda just seems like the protagonist is Just Awesome At Everything but not in a remotely charming way.
Cells at Work Code Black: (Yes) If you liked Cells at Work, this is that but dingier, and is able to tackle some darker themes - like what stress, smoking, drinking, and probably eventually STDs can do to your body.
Kemono Jihen: (Yes) I don’t wanna explain TOO much about the plot of this one because it looks to be a mystery series, and the first episode sets it up the characters very very well. A man from the city is called to a rural town where animals are being mysteriously killed and found rotting. He’s tasked with finding and killing the perpetrator, assumed to be a monster of some kind. It does the horror very well, and even in the first episode manages some twistyness.
The Hidden Dungeon Only I Can Enter: (No) Even for a blatant fan service anime this one is just......... stupid. It might have a scrap of joy to it if the protagonist were anything other than a boring sycophant. His harem just all seems to be random girls who’s singular personality traits are to be in love with him in various stereotypical ways, that he just uses to min max his Cool Stats. But like, it’s not even self aware enough to make that into an interesting premise.
Sk8: (Yes) It’s a racing anime that seems super stylish and fun and very well animated. The protagonists have some cool chemistry already, and it really leans into the Underground Illegal Racing part of the fun - all the various characters who battle in death defying races through this abandoned mine, all have seemingly ordinary day jobs. Definitely worth a shot if that sounds up your alley.
Suppose a Kid from the Last Dungeon Boonies moved to a starter town?: (Probably) Okay so the premise is just there in the title and is actually pretty fun. Think: a random NPC who is considered pretty weak where the monsters are lv 50 moving somewhere where the monsters are scary at lv 5, shenanigans ensue. The MC boy is hilariously oblivious to the fact that anyone with a shred of sense can see he’s insanely over leveled to the area, and just trying to be nice and polite to everyone ^u^. The tentative nature of my recommendation is that it is kind of leaning harder on the Girls are Obsessed With Him train than is ideal. How much it depends on that as opposed to utilizing the premise to its fullest extent will have an enormous bearing on how fun the show is to watch going forward.
Ex-Arm: (Absolutely not but yes) It’s a fucking train wreck.
Heavens Design Team: (Yes) God decided to outsource creating animals to a team of angels, and works as a client giving weird ass requests for the angels to fill. Hilarity ensues, and it is peak edutainment to boot. It’s so much fun learning weird shit about animals, or trying to guess the animal these seemingly random train of failed attempts leads to.
Dr. Ramune -Mysterious Disease Specialist-: (No) It has a promising premise and some good moments. The main characters are solving these weird “diseases” that people get by finding the actual emotional cause and using magic of some kind to monkey paw it into a resolution. This could be really fun and interesting, but something about the execution just... falls flat? Like maybe it picks up as the season goes on but for now it’s not rly worth it.
Vlad Love: (Yes) I was going through the list of anime this season and was like wtf is this and literally just now watched episode 1. It’s about a girl with a blood donation kink and her vampire girlfriend. Literally. It’s rly funny and over the top ridiculous but like, gay vampires.
Back Arrow: (No) It’s like... fine. It’s about these two warring kingdoms surrounded by a wall with a mountain range between. They worship the wall as god, and occasionally get gifts from beyond it, in the form of mech suits they use to fight each other in. One day a boy shows up from beyond the wall in one of those suits and no memories of anything and he wants to get back. Which... could be promising I guess? But something about the show just didn’t grab my attention.
Skate-Leading Stars: (No) It’s like Yuri on ice if it was less gay and less well written I guess...? The first episode set up the Drama competently enough, but I just... couldn’t give a shit.
Project Scard: (No) For some reason part of Tokyo has been turned into a post apocalyptic hellscape where people just murder each other. They also have super powered tattoos and use them to fight each other. Animation is very similar to Handshakers - which is an Aesthetic that may not appeal to some. The first episode didn’t rly do much for me but I could see it going somewhere if it tries.
Wave!!: (No) Might have been a tentative yes if I hadn’t gone on and watched the second episode. First ep went hard with the queerbaiting cause they want to be the new Free! but with surfing, but Ep 2 just forgot all about that entirely. Dialogue is mostly boring and there’s like 3 sets, which becomes painfully obvious very quickly by ep 2.
Idoly Pride: (No) Literally looks like they ripped off the waifus of a bunch of other more popular anime and made an idol anime with the most basic ass idol plot. Nothing exceptional here.
Gekidol: (undecided) It’s an idol anime... set after a mysterious apocalyptic event? It’s mostly so far seemed intriguing as hell but not my jam. Mysterious craters destroyed parts of Japan, and its rebuilding and the MCs wanna bring light to the world. Maybe aliens exist? Idk! I’m intrigued.
I*Chu: (No) Another idol anime but this time it’s cute boys! Idk maybe this is a decent idol anime but it rly didn’t grab me and idol stuff isn’t usually my jam. I couldn’t tell anything exceptionally unique about this one from just the first episode.
WIXOSS Diva: (No, but) I don’t normally watch spin-offs of series but I didn’t realize until halfway into this that it was one cause Crunchyroll didn’t attach it to the core line. It’s like... magical girl battle idols in VR! Which honestly if you’re a fan of that it might actually be worth checking out.(edited)
Idolls!: (No) Another idol anime! But this one uses mocap 3d models. Phoned in plot line delivered by a weird tiki statue that tells the girls what to do. Seems extraordinarily low budget, and more just a way to sell music. The whole episode happened in a single set and  was basically just... girls want to make it big as idols... oh no... gotta book a stage! Yay they got one! Now must get an audience! Like... ok
Hortensia Saga: (No but) Sword and sorcery fantasy setting that’s mostly sword, main character is a princess masquerading as a male knight alongside the son of her dead parents’s also dead bodyguard. The first episode is very lore heavy and felt kinda like the prologue to a video game. So it ended up feeling a little expository and trope laden, but it has potential. Seems a bit Game of Thronesy? Wasn’t like... bad or anything, so if it’s your thing you might enjoy it.
Otherside Picnic: (Yes) I think it’s gay first of all, two girls going exploring / treasure hunting / monster hunting in a bizarre mirror world to their own. Girls are cute, it’s very interesting premise and writing seems solid.
Wonder Egg Priority: (Yes) It deals with some HEAVY themes? But it’s... a bit of a psychological horror but in a way that feels very like it’s dealing with some of the real life issues. The main character girl comes across as neurodivergent, and it’s just... idk man the first episode was good and left me wanting more.

[ a fic written for @mine-sara-sp‘s shadow people au, specifically the “season 7 shadows” au-of-an-au. fun fact, simplysarc did a series with zedaph once. ]
content warnings: possession.
ZEDAPH - S7 - 00
Okay, so they’re still working out all the issues with the shadow mob - apparently it wasn’t supposed to become a new form of artificial intelligence, who’d have thunk it? X managed to do some admin stuff and port the old shadows over, though, so I’ve still got Merino.
A lot of the new shadows have turned out, uh, concerning though? Bdubs got a plant monster even though the whole nHo plotline was two entire seasons ago, Grian’s is - well I don’t know what Grian’s is, but it’s got wings and eyes on it. Honestly, even Joe’s new one seems sort of off-putting for some reason. Keeps staring at me.
Or maybe there was just something on my face that day and he was too polite to point it out?
Whatever the case, I kind of want to get my hands on some shadow equipment as soon as possible, mostly so I can fend off Grian’s double-trouble shadows. Which means I’ve gotta head into the shadowlands as soon as possible, and I figure I’m gonna do it right now before my new shadow ends up sentient and has back pain from me trying to get a full armor set.
Also, I’m taking notes, because that’s the difference between science and screwing around.
ZEDAPH - S7 - 01
I have to admit, I was really worried about going into the shadow temple and doing the whole summoning thing considering that so many people have gotten big spooky monsters as their shadows. I guess the devs wanted to buff them because some of the stuff that happened with people’s shadows, like Shadoc and Murmur?
But, you know what? Everything went great! Sort of. Okay, so I didn’t actually see my shadow because I double-summoned it as quickly as possible and then leapt right on into the shadowlands. I’m sure it’ll be fine - it seems like you can hit any yellow-colored shadow with the scythe to get out, and guess what I got on my first run of the shadow boss! And… the second one. And the third one.
I think it’s probably a guaranteed drop.
I had to leave after three fights, though, because it turns out they definitely nerfed the livability of this dimension when they updated the Nether to be more homey. If you stick around for too long, you start getting slowness; stick around even longer, you get a really slow version of wither. Supposedly there’s a third drawback, something about the bottom of the shadowlands. I didn’t read the update notes too closely.
Anyway, I’ll have to go back soon, I want a full armor set and I only managed to get the chestplate - you know, the piece of armor I probably won’t use most of the time. Oh well, having spare scythes isn’t that bad.
ZEDAPH - S7 - 03
Full armor set obtained. Also, I think the third consequence for staying in the shadowlands too long is bugged. I got the slowness and wither effects in the middle of finishing off the last boss, and when I headed back to leave, it looked like something was rising from the bottom of the abyss?
But the animation sort of… looped, glitchily, like the amorphous blob of shadow was only consuming the bottom layers of the shadowlands repeatedly and not actually advancing upwards. So, yeah, it might be bugged.
I did get hit with a killer headache when I left the shadowlands this time, though. But hey, I don’t actually have to go back there for a good amount of time when I have the full set of gear, so I don’t have to worry about getting a post-shadowlands-exploration headache for a little while.
Merino’s been staring at me like there’s something wrong, recently, I’m not sure what’s going on. I tried to ask them and they just said it was nothing.
I guess it’s nothing to worry about, then. Maybe they just want me to get back to herding sheep so they can kill them again, like old times. I’ll do that.
ZEDAPH - S7 - 04
Okay, maybe there’s something to worry about. Thing is, Merino’s not the only shadow that’s been staring at me. Now it’s Joe’s new shadow - Joyful - tailing me, and Puzzler - Grian’s brand-new bastard - is always watching me specifically when it’s not being creepy at Grian.
I’d assume they’re jealous of my really cool clothing, but the shadowvex are normally all over that kind of thing and both the old and new ones are… I think they might be avoiding me? Which would be super convenient if not for the fact that it’s very out-of-character for them to outright avoid people.
The other thing is that… I still have that headache from exiting the shadowlands. Maybe that’s the third consequence, is a really long-lasting headache that can’t be cancelled out by milk? Either way… ugh. Just, ugh, I’ll start seeing what might cure it.
ZEDAPH - S7 - 05
I’m going to talk about the not-interesting part of today first, because I know someone’s reading these notes and I think it’s more fun if I add narrative spice to their poking and prodding.
Yeah, that’s right, buddy, I’m talking about you. I don’t know who you are but I know you’re reading this. (Are you Joyful? I think you’re probably Joyful.)
Anyway, boring parts first! I went into the shadowlands again to test something - turns out, the headache debuff might be a thing that happens when I’m not in that dimension, because the moment I teleported there, it went away. That was a real relief, honestly, because I’d had a rough morning. The glitchy stuff at the bottom of the abyss was still glitching, everything seemed as normal as a weird dark hellscape could be.
So, about the rough morning…
I was heading out to the shadow temple to do more shadowlands testing when someone grabbed me by the back of the collar. Biffa’s old shadow, Apex - I could tell it was him and not the nearly identical new one, on account of his visor being up and his eyes being blue. And, y’know, him lifting me up by the collar.
Basically, we had a talk - apparently, according to him, there’s something very bad in the bottom of the shadowlands. He called it the “old shadows” and told me that since I was there so often, I should be extremely careful.
He said even the Vex were scared of it. I told him that the old shadows seemed to be glitched, because last time I saw them they were only rising up to a certain point (and my trip inside later proved it). Apex just dropped me, and shook his head, told me to be careful again.
So yeah, Joyful, there’s your juicy tidbits for the day. While you’re reading these, d’you mind helping me clean my desk? It’s the least you could do in exchange for me letting you snoop around my stuff.
ZEDAPH - S7 - 06
Something really weird happened.
Grian’s been menaced by Puzzler a lot lately, and I sort of ended up running into one of those menacement sessions? I figured I should chip in and help out, so I butted into the conversation and tried to be obnoxiously cheerful, as Puzzler plays nice around anyone that isn’t Grian.
The second I popped out of the bushes with a “he-LLO guys!” though, purple shadow jerk’s eyes widened - all of them, even the ones on its wings - and it took a step back. Eyes flicked from me to Grian and then back again.
“He’s dangerous,” it told Grian, and then flew off.
I have no idea what that was about, because it’s not like I’m particularly skilled at PvP or even PvE, and I don’t have a special creepy shadow like Joe (or any shadow besides Merino, actually). Grian didn’t seem to know what was going on, either, but he thanked me for the help.
My headache flared up as soon as he approached… went from background annoyance to full-on migraine. Grian seemed worried, but I told him it was really just a me problem and that I’d be fine.
After that, I headed out to the shadowlands for a bit, because my head just wouldn’t stop pounding and I needed a break from it. I didn’t do any dungeon-crawling this time, just sat on the uppermost layer and stared into the abyss.
It didn’t stare back because, y’know, it’s a pit, pits don’t have eyes, but the cool air made me feel a lot better and when I returned my headache was less bad.
ZEDAPH - S7 - 07
So apparently the person reading my notes isn’t Joyful, because I confronted him today and he seemed… super, super on edge, but about something entirely else. Apparently, he’s got some sort of outcome-controlling power, except he can’t use it on me. He says that he blanks on the words whenever it comes to me.
He said I should be careful. And then my headache flared up again, particularly badly this time, and Joyful got concerned and said he’d leave me alone for the time being.
I tried to track down Puzzler again, since it seemed to actually know what was going on with me, but nobody’s seen Grian’s shadow around in a while, even Grian himself. From what Grian says, Puzzler might have gotten desummoned somehow, and nobody really wants him resummoned except for the shadowvex.
I really hope I don’t run into desummoned Puzzler in the shadowlands next time I go, because that would be even worse.
ZEDAPH - S7 - 07.1
Maybe the old shadows are rising. The glitchy abyss seemed to have risen up a little more than before - I was going to leave off the week’s entry before, but I wanted to make note of this before I forgot to do so.
I didn’t see Puzzler anywhere, though.
ZEDAPH - S7 - 08
Still no sign of Puzzler. Good riddance, Grian says. But now, in addition to the other shadows, even the jerks like Apex and Jigsaw are starting to avoid me, and I’m really not sure why. I don’t think I’ve changed much as a person, and none of the other hermits have come up with anything.
Joyful used to sort of watch me from around corners, and now he’s intensified that activity. If he wasn’t reading my notes before, then he definitely is now. So, uh, hi - please stop staring at me, and actually talk to me? I promise I’m not going to start a fight.
ZEDAPH - S7 - 09
I woke up and my mouth tasted like oil.
ZEDAPH - S7 - 09.1
Okay, I don’t remember writing the first part of this entry, so I guess I must have woken up really early, written it, and then immediately fallen asleep again? Best guess, I might actually be sick - between the headaches and now me feeling a little woozy while in the overworld, I’ve probably gotten a very mild version of the bends.
So I stayed in bed today, drifted in and out of sleep as a couple of the other hermits stopped in. One of them - the guy that stuck around the longest - was Joe.
Apparently nobody’s seen Joyful around for a few days…
I’m not an idiot. Something’s wrong.
ZEDAPH - S7 - 09.2
Snuck out of bed to check the shadowlands. The old shadows rose another few blocks. I watched the abyss for a few minutes, glad to be rid of all the weird illness symptoms, and then I felt a hand rest on my shoulder. They didn’t push me, so I just let them leave it there for a minute more…
And then I turned to look up at them, and there was nobody there. The hand still felt like it was on my shoulder, but nobody was actually there.
I should probably not go to the shadowlands again.
ZEDAPH - S7 - 10
So, I’ve abstained from going to the shadowlands for a while now, but shadows keep vanishing, and my bends keep getting worse and worse. It’s the new shadowvex, this time, they’re just straight up gone-gone. Can’t be summoned even to go into the shadowlands.
Man, this new mechanic is really buggy.
ZEDAPH - S7 - 10.1
I caved.
The abyss has risen higher.
It’s not staring back yet.
ZEDAPH - S7 - 11
I keep waking up places that I don’t remember going to sleep. I’ve decided this is way too dangerous, because I’m pretty sure I’m the reason that shadows keep vanishing. So far it’s been mostly the mean ones. I don’t want them to get at anyone else, either one of the nice shadows or one of the actual hermits.
I also don’t remember writing the entry for 10.1, so it’s safe to say that something is horribly, awfully wrong. And it’s probably my fault…
I have a dumb idea - I’m gonna see if jumping into the abyss does anything. Maybe it’ll reverse all this if I die to the mechanic? Also, it’d be my first death on this new server, and that’d be a pretty neat way to go out.
ZEDAPH - S7 - 11.1
So I’m standing there, fully prepared to yeet myself into the abyss, when I feel a hand on my shoulder again. And this time, when I turned around, there was something there.
I’m pretty sure it was my shadow, because it had the same proportions as me, only it was absolutely as pitch-black as the abyss below. I couldn’t make out any details besides yellow eyes and the glint of sharp white teeth when it spoke.
“Not yet,” it told me.
And now I’m back in the overworld somehow. My mouth tastes like oil again.
ZEDAPH - S7 - 12
Xisuma’s gone.
...My eyes have always been yellow, right?
ZEDAPH - S7 - 13
It told me, one last thing, the place I should go when it’s all done.
Craterville.
I’m going to see an old friend.

Because I never get tired of pestering you with OC questions: Your OCs as dungeon/raid bosses! How would a fight with them go? Any snappy boss lines spring to mind? How do they react upon victory/defeat? (I can imagine Diily with her million pets as adds, and Ladelia spouting terrible fire puns)
I feel like a three part raid with all theee simultaneously would be an absolute HELLSCAPE..(I know nothing about making a raid/raid bosses so for all I know this is ridiculously OP but hey its for fun-)
Diily - ranged boss who has a small mini boss with her, Wildheart. She also summons adds but they’re obviously weaker than Wildheart for mechanics sake.
I feel like she has somewhat stealthy approach, being a huntress. She’s quick and hard to keep track of. Especially with Wildheart or other adds on your ass.
And especially with Alaluria and Ladelia on the field (yikes)
Alaluria
She is melee and an absolute pain in the ass to kite/tank. All the usual demon hunter powers and also maybe on..normal we add Shadowclaw to the fight too hm? A weaker add but one nonetheless because lbr my girls would have their cats in a fight.
Ladelia
Ranged but also dangerous close up. Constantly dropping comets on your ass. If the fire doesn’t kill you the bad puns will! Sets the floor on fire. All kinds of fun stuff
Heroic - +Morningflower with Ladelia along with Wildy and Shadow
Mythic: +Brightheart who is no joke as an add. “Mother’s fury.” Buff and some brutal attacks. Or something like that.
Other mechanics
Sisterhood buff - increased attack and damage reduction when within a certain range of each other
Grief stricken - killing one will enrage the others. Each has a different sort of enrage. I would suggest killing Diily first. It would be..unwise to kill them in front of her.
Diily can revive Wildheart on Heroic Difficulty and up but will be unable to revive any of the other cats.
Ladelia will polymorph your ass. It’s not fun. Interrupt her
I just want heroic or mythic Alaluria to have a buff “well prepared” because well..
Diily Taunts
- “At least try to make this hunt interesting for me.”
- “Dinner time. Isn’t it, Wildheart?”
- “I’ll let them eat you alive for that.”
- “Catch me if you can.”
- “I do love the thrill of the hunt.”
- “Cat got your tongue?”
- “I don’t think they like you very much..”
- “It’s not too late run. I’ll even give you a heads start..but after that. The hunt is on.”
- “I promise I won’t bite…but she [Wildheart] will.”
- “I’ve been doing this since before you were born, surrender now. You don’t stand a chance.”
- “even children know not to mess with a nightsaber’s cubs.” (Brightheart summon)
- “I don’t envy you. She’s…a little overprotective..” (Brightheart summon)
- “lets call this..natural selection.”
- “there’s a reason they’re [sabers] at the top of the food chain, you know.”
- “Disappointing.” (Player death variant)
- “You should have run faster.” (Player death variant)
- “I told you to run.” (Raid wipe)
- “Such a waste. Why didn’t you listen?” (Raid wipe)
- “I didn’t want to hurt you..but then you tried to hurt my sisters and that is something I will not tolerate.” (Raid wipe)
- “I admit I enjoyed myself. A good hunt but I’ve had better.” (Raid wipe)
Alaluria taunts
- “Demons are more worthy prey than you.”
- “I wonder if your soul is worth anything. Doubtful.”
- “What? Are you expecting me to yell you are not prepared?”
- “Is that all you’ve got?”
- “I’m not even breaking a sweat.”
- “I could do this all day..”
- “I’ve fought felhounds more challenging than you.”
- “I can taste your fear.”
- “Won’t you just die already?”
- “you think I’m scared of you? I’m the monster here. It’s you who should be running from me.”
- “Pathetic.” (Player death variant)
- “Hardly worth my time.” (Player death variant)
- “Well, I guess he [Illidan] was right the first time around. You weren’t prepared.” (Raid wipe)
- “you could have at least made it a little challenging.” (Raid wipe)
- “I’m fine. Stop fussing. We have a mess to clean up.” [At Diily]” (Raid Wipe)
- “Nice gear…hm…you know, I’ll be taking that.” (Raid wipe)
Ladelia
- “Burn, baby, Burn”
- “It seems things are finally beginning to heat up.”
- “If you can’t take the heat…”
- “Say bahhhhh-“ (polymorph)
- “Does anyone else remember the floor is lava game? Let’s see if I remember how it goes..”
- “Now look you’ve got me all fired up.”
- “want to see a magic trick? I’ll need a few volunteers..”
- “liar liar pants on fire”
- “Like a moth to a flame.”
- “I’ll smoke you out.”
- “didn’t anyone ever teach you not to play with fire?” (Player death variant)
- “Maybe try being a little less..flammable.” (Player death variant)
- “That looked like it hurt.” (Player death variant)
- “I’d almost pity you if you weren’t trying to kill us.” (Raid wipe)
- “There you go kits [their sabers]. A home cooked meal just for you..uh sorry it’s a little burnt.” (Raid wipe)
- “Can we go now? I’m tired, hungry and would really like to wash this blood off my robes.” (Raid wipe)
- “All you had to do is walk away.” (Raid wipe)
And oh boy do I imagine there’s very unique and very painful dialogue for all the possible death combos? Like cinematic agony
I would need some voice actors that specialize in “anguished wails of grief and agony” though.
Diily - Alaluria and Ladelia’s deaths
- “Y-you’re hurt but I’ll fix it. I’ll make it better, it’s okay. I-im here..your big sister’s here. I’ve got you..it’s o-okay..it’s okay.”
- “It should have been me..I’m so sorry, it should have been me..I promised..I promised..”
- “It’s okay. I’ll just..let you rest for now. I’ll be right here. I’ll keep you safe. It’s alright.”
- “Why couldn’t you have just killed me too?” (@the wiped raid/Elune/fate)
- “Anyone but you..”
- “This is all my fault.”
- “I don’t know how to live without you..I don’t want to.”
- “I was supposed to protect you..I’m s-sorry..I’m so sorry. I failed you-“
- “Is this my punishment? Tell me! What have I done to deserve this? What have they done to deserve this..they didn’t deserve this.” (Seemingly @ Elune)
- “what’s the point if you’re not here with me?”
- “I’ll hunt down every last one of them, I’ll make them suffer for this..and then I’ll join you. I’ll be with you soon, don’t worry.”
- “I love you. I love you..you know that don’t you? I love you so much, I love you both more than anything. More than life itself. Please get up, I’m begging you please get up- I need you to get up.”
- “I was supposed to be the first to go.” (In general not exclusive to this specific incident. She’s always wanted to die first because there’s nothing more horrifying to her than outliving her baby sisters
Alaluria @ Diily and Ladelia’s deaths
- “Hey..get up. That’s not funny.. -voice breaks- it’s really not f-funny…”
- “I promise, I’ll kill them all. Every one of them. I’ll..I’ll make them scream for mercy.”
- “It should have been me.”
- “I’m sorry, I’m sorry..I’m sorry.”
- “But..we’re a family again..?”
- “I love you..i know I don’t say it enough..but I love you. I love you so much. Is that what you want to hear? Is that what it’ll take? Please-“
- “I need you to get up..I need you..please..GET UP!”
- “you idiot/s. Don’t you dare do this to me! Please- just get up..I..”
- “it’s only fair you leave me now, huh? Is this my punishment?” (Said with immense bitterness and self loathing)
- “it wasn’t worth it.”
Ladelia @ Diily and Alaluria’s deaths
- “W-wake up. You both need to wake up. It’s time to go..i don’t want to be here anymore..i..want to go.”
- “Please..don’t leave me. Please..I can’t..I can’t do this without you.”
- “Get up both of you. You’re scaring me. Come on..Diily? Ally? Im..scared..”
- “It’s always been so easy to forget you’re not invincible..”
- “please don’t leave me alone..”
- “I’ll burn it all down..all of it. All of them. I promise” (No humor/pun intended)
- “you said you’d always be there..”
- “please..don’t go where I can’t come with you..”
- “I can..I can fix this. I will fix this..it’s just..a few spells. I’ll be right back.”
- “It was supposed to be the three of us who win..I-it’s always been the three of us. It’s supposed to always be the..”
- “You promised.”
BUT ALSO fun banter because..that was sad ouch…and maybe you don’t kill them at all and you just fight until they have to surrender…
Ladelia: “I’m on fire tonight-“ Alaluria: “I swear if you make one more fire joke I will turn around and shove this glaive so far up your-“
Ladelia: “Hey, Alaluria. Need a..hand?”: “Put that down and keep casting.” Alaluria: “Put that down and keep casting.”
Diily: “A regular game of cat and mouse.” Alaluria: “Not you too..”
Ladelia: “Diily, look no hands! Dragon’s Breath.” Diily: “That’s wonderful, little sister- but I’m a little busy at the moment”
Alaluria: “Touch my sister again and I’ll leave you choking on your own entrails.” Diily: “Awww..you really do care.” Alaluria: “Shut up.”
Diily: “Awww look at the little puppy (worgen) getting chased by the big bad kitty..you better run faster. She likes to play with her food.”
Ladelia: “I’ll have you know can appreciate a beautiful woman and fight her at the same time!”
Diily: “This next arrow is going in your ass, Alaluria.”
Diily: “Plan B!” Alaluria: “Come on, I hate plan B…” Ladelia: “You love it.” Alaluria: “It’s humiliating-“
Ladelia: “We need more synchronized fighting moves.” Alaluria: “What are we the Barkstreet Boys!?
Diily: “I do hope your rotten flesh doesn’t make my cats sick.” (Player death taunt particularly at undead/death knights/warlocks/etc. if it’s a demon hunter Alaluria will grumble in mock offense.)
Diily: “Touch my baby sister again and I’ll skin you alive and use you as throw rug.” Alaluria and Ladelia simultaneously: “Don’t call me that in battle!”
Ladelia: “Flame on-“ Diily: “Is that a reference to something too?” Ladelia: “I don’t know it just felt right..?”
Alaluria: “Stop juggling your fire balls and do something-“ Ladelia: “Hah!!!!” Alaluria: Seriously? You’re over ten thousand years old act like it-“
Ladelia: “Those are some impressive hooves, you know. You should try kicking them like a donkey. Alaluria: “I’m seriously considering devouring your soul, dear sister.” Ladelia: “I’m being serious!”
Diily: “you need to be more careful-“ Alaluria: “is this really the time for a lecture?”

The research rules I posted previously are part of a project for a type of D&D campaign as well as a campaign setting set within the Firmament.  I'm drawing a lot of inspiration from rules I've found for running a magical industrial revolution and Dark Souls-inspired campaign (Coins and Scrolls is an excellent D&D blog that I highly recommend for a lot of awesome ideas and random generators, especially if you're interested in running a campaign in a more historically-plausible medieval setting that plays around with the feudal social structure and taxation).  One source of a lot of my ideas is "let's take Cool Thing A and Cool Thing B, smash them together, and see if we get an Even Cooler Thing", so that's what I'm doing here.
Here's the elevator pitch: "The party is a group of industrialists sent to the dark, ruined lands of Dark Souls and Bloodborne to redevelop the region and turn it into a booming economic center."
At the moment a lot of my ideas revolve around a group of mages and artificers looking at ruined, monster-filled lands and thinking "this would be a good place to build a factory and research lab!" with building facilities and churning out magic items for profit being the primary goal, but I'd like to further adapt these rules for groups of players that want to set up a base, investigate what happened in these blighted lands, and turn back the darkness or simply be better prepared for some dungeon delving and looting.  The research and development rules could be used for either designing new goods to sell or new tools and weapons to combat the blight.  If the group wants to play under the pressure of being heroes that need to fund their noble quest because support from elsewhere is simply not available, this could be a way to do that, too.  It's tough trying to liberate a monster-filled region when it's just their partymates, their ship, and the nearest friendly town is a week's flight away.  Prior proper planning will be important here, if you're into that kind of thing.
In no particular order, here's an outline of the rules I have planned:
- Running a Business: buying and selling, shipping, operating expenses, and how renown can reduce interest rates on your loans, which I'm sure will be of particular interest because you'll be starting with a large amount of debt.  Prefab factories aren't cheap.
- Research and Development: understanding the monsters, artifacts, and resources you find will be key to your survival.  Learning how to turn them into profitable goods will be key to your solvency.
- Facilities: because you'll need buildings to house and protect your factories, goods, hirelings, and vehicles.  Besides, you'll be in this hellscape for a while, so why not build a proper and defensible roof over your heads instead of roughing it every day?
- Arcane Industrial Equipment: why craft magic items yourself when you can automate the process?  Also rules for adventuring gear, additional tools, vehicles, and services.
- The Setting: the Aetheric South is a place of civilization, prosperity, and high culture, but beyond the core cities and regions are blighted wastes filled with monsters of their own creation.  Sometimes these demons will swallow up an outlying village, town, or small nation.  But all land is valuable, and many governments are selling charters to enterprising ventures to reclaim and redevelop these lost territories.  This is just one such example.

Cool Games I Finished In 2018 (In No Real Order)
Man! Wow! 2018! 2018 was a wild year for me. I managed to deliver those elbow drops I talked about last year and ended up doing a lot of of things. I left my job and moved cross-country in the span of like 2 and a half weeks! I took a new job in the video game industry (play Ninjin and Override)! I took a trip to Vegas a week after that! I got in a relationship! I got out of a relationship! It’s been a ride. A ride that hasn’t left me a ton of time to play video games or write about video games, but I’m like 1000 times happier now so it’s probably a fair trade. No matter what though, I will always be here at the end of the year to make a bunch of terrible MSPaint banners and provide you with another one of these. Here’s a bunch of cool games I experienced for the first time in 2018.
Tumblr media
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne (PlayStation 2, 2004)
Nocturne is a game that I haven’t been able to get out of my head since I beat it. It’s so damn cool. It starts with you witnessing a demonic apocalypse where only you, your two friends, your teacher, a reporter, and the man with the world’s wildest widow’s peak survive. These people are, with a couple of notable exceptions, the only real characters in the entire game. You barely see them, and when you do your meetings are usually pretty brief. Sure, you talk to and recruit a horde of demons to your side as party members, and you interact with a handful of demonic antagonists and various demonic NPCs, but for the most part the game is just you. You, alone, wandering the weird hellscape remnants of Tokyo. It’s one of the most solitary-feeling video games I’ve ever played, and it nails this atmosphere flawlessly. The music, the visuals, the writing, every element gels with every other element so smoothly to create a prevailing, almost overbearing feeling of loneliness. The combat and gameplay mechanics are what I understand this series to mostly be like (this being the only mainline SMT I’ve played), and are fun and engaging in a way that’s not too dissimilar from the Persona series. The only knock I have against Nocturne is that the dungeon design super sucks. I’m fine with endless corridors, my love of the PS2 Persona games can attest to that, but almost every dungeon in Nocturne has an annoying gimmick to it, and they all essentially boil down to different takes on a teleporter maze. I was kind of almost dreading navigating dungeons by the time I got to the last fourth of the game, but my intense love for literally everything else saw me through. For those of you who like JRPGs and haven’t played Nocturne, I’m sure you’ve heard this plenty of times, and I was like you once. I didn’t listen. But now I’m on the other side of the tunnel, so I get to say it. You should really, really play Nocturne. It’s good.
Tumblr media
Splatoon 2 Octo Expansion (Nintendo Switch, 2018)
Octo Expansion is what Splatoon 2′s single player mode should have been from the start. Don’t get me wrong, the packed in single player campaign is fine, but it’s basically a level pack for Splatoon 1′s. Octo Expansion, on the other hand, is 100% fresh. Structurally it’s much more diverse, with the campaign taking place over 80 mostly-bite-sized missions with varying objectives. There’s a couple of stinkers in there, but overall the quality of the missions is much higher than what was in the original single player campaign. They can actually be pretty tough sometimes too! It was fun to see some actual challenge in a Splatoon campaign. Everything wrapped around the core gameplay of Octo Expansion is kind of phenomenal. The setting and visual design is super weird, the music is way more mellow than anything else that’s come out of the series and creates a great sense of atmosphere, and the writing is actually genuinely pretty great. There’s a lot of funny dialogue and good character moments. They made me like Pearl! The weird gremlin that eats mayo! She’s my friend now! The last half an hour or so of Octo Expansion is also straight up my favorite sequence from a game I played this year too. Don’t sleep on this thing just because it’s DLC. It’s legitimately great.
Tumblr media
Monster Hunter: World (PlayStation 4, 2018)
At the outset I was incredibly skeptical of Monster Hunter: World. This wasn’t entirely fair to the game, as a lot of this feeling was based on its initial E3 reveal trailer kinda sorta matching up to some mostly not true pre-E3 leaks, namely that it would be much more action heavy to cater to Western audiences and tie into the then unannounced Monster Hunter movie (which, as an aside, looks like a trainwreck that I desperately want to see). You can probably pretty easily find some tweets and posts from me around that time saying that the game looks like trash because of some misinterpreted new game mechanic. I am here to say that I am a big wrong dumbass and Monster Hunter: World is very good. You might be surprised to hear this, but it’s Monster Hunter! With a bunch of good and well-executed gameplay refinements! And graphics that aren’t repurposed from a PS2 game! It’s a ton of fun and I put a lot of time into it, but it’s not without its flaws. The number of monsters and weapons is comparatively way lower than in previous games, mostly due to that whole not repurposing PS2 models thing. It’s still kind of clunky in a lot of the places Monster Hunter has been historically clunky in, but also in some pretty big new ways, mainly around playing multiplayer. Also the story, while it’s as bland as it’s ever been, is exponentially more intrusive thanks to the addition of voiced cutscenes (which need to be triggered before the game lets you bring other players into story missions, causing a lot of that clunk I mentioned earlier). It’s all nothing game-ruining, of course. The game wouldn’t be on the list if it was! Monster Hunter: World exceeded my expectations, and I’m super looking forward to playing the recently announced G Rank expansion when it comes out next year.
Tumblr media
Contra: Hard Corps (Sega Genesis, 1994)
I wish I could go back in time and kick my own stupid ass for not playing this sooner. I’d written off Contra: Hard Corps for the longest time based solely on some bullshit I read on the internet at an age where I just took other peoples’ opinions and made them my own. This and Castlevania Bloodlines were the bad ones, the ones some weird b-team crapped out for the Genesis while the SNES got the good stuff like Contra 3: Alien Wars. Well, it turns out... they were right about Bloodlines. But MAN were they wrong about Hard Corps. Hard Corps is the best Contra game. It fucking rules. I would have gone on with my life never giving the game a glance if not for this excellent Giant Bomb feature happening, and a couple of episodes in I knew I had to play it for myself. Contra: Hard Corps is fucking nuts. It’s balls to the wall 100% of the time. There’s so many unique enemies and wild bosses and they’re all never not exploding. The game has four characters with unique weapons and multiple different level paths that have totally different levels, bosses, and story beats. Oh, and the soundtrack fucking rips. Sometimes it’s a little too much, and there are definitely some sequences and boss attacks that are total gotchas that you can’t survive without prior knowledge of how they work. I’d also be remiss not to give a special shoutout to level 4′s awful, tedious, unskippable-on-any-route boss. But god damn if the rest of Hard Corps doesn’t outshine these flaws. It’s the high water mark for insane non-stop 16-bit action.
Tumblr media
Deltarune (PC, 2018)
Does this count? It’s a demo for a full game that won’t be out for a real long time... I suppose it does, it’s self-contained enough. Deltarune, the free demo for the sort of but also sort of not sequel to Undertale, is unsurprisingly good as hell. Less surprising for sure, as Undertale is a known quantity these days, but I’m still way into it. The story is interesting and full of charming characters, and the battle system has been overhauled to include things like multiple party members with different abilities while still keeping all the things that made Undertale’s battles novel. The music is, of course, fantastic, and the visuals look much nicer while adhering to the same general style as the previous game. It’s fairly short, and some character development feels a little rushed because of it, but again, it’s a small chunk of the beginning of a much larger game. I can’t imagine any of this stuff wouldn’t be expanded upon. It’s hard to judge this thing story-wise due to the nature of it being a demo. I thoroughly enjoyed what is there, though, and look forward to playing the rest of the game in 50 years or whatever.
Tumblr media
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo Switch, 2018)
This game is so much. Even though the first thing I learned about this game was “everyone is here”, I still wasn’t ready for how much it is. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is maybe too much. Of course, as previously stated, everyone (meaning every single previous playable Smash Bros. character) is here. Most of the previous stages are also present. This was all known. Where the game really, truly goes overboard though is in the single-player content. There’s the usual classic mode for every character, this time specifically structured around a theme for each character, but the vast majority of it is actually comprised of the all-new spirits system. Spirits are non-playable video game characters that you can collect and equip to your fighters for special abilities, sort of like a less terrible version of Smash Bros. Brawl’s stickers. You collect these spirits through spirit battles, which are fights themed around the character the spirit represents via extremely clever usage of already existing fighters and mechanics. These battles range from the obvious (Big the Cat’s battle tasks you with fighting a giant purple Incineroar), to the obscure (fight the main characters from Zangeki no Reginleiv as represented by Link and female Robin while you’re giant-sized), to the creative (Porygon’s spirit puts you in a fight against wireframe Little Mac and Akira from Virtua Fighter, normally an assist trophy), to the downright in-jokey (the spirit of Ness’s Father, displayed as the telephone spirte from Earthbound, makes you fight an invisible Solid Snake). There are like 1200 spirits. The vast majority of them have an associated battle. And you don’t just experience these battles through a menu, at least half of them are implemented into the 30 hour long adventure mode, World of Light, which has you fighting spirits, navigating dungeons, and facing bosses. It’s insane. They focused on spirits in lieu of collectible trophies this time around and they absolutely made the correct choice. The trophies in the last two Super Smash Bros. games were fine, but easier access to existing 3D models of most represented characters made them inherently less exciting than Melee’s tailor-made collection of high quality (considering the time period) renders, many of which would never receive a 3D model again. The spirits system manages to be exciting in the same way Melee's trophies were, fostering a genuine sense of anticipation to see what they cooked up next, but in the context of gameplay. They completely knocked it out of the park. Smash 4 made it on one of these lists long ago, and I essentially just said “it’s more Smash Bros. and that’s good”. Smash Ultimate is also more Smash Bros., but it’s SO much more Smash Bros. It’s so much more extremely good Smash Bros. The only things I can ding it for are some totally subjective stage preferences (where the hell is Poké Floats) and some slightly less than optimal music sorting decisions. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is, ultimately, the ultimate Super Smash Bros.
These games were also cool, I just had less to say about them:
Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon (Nintendo Switch, 2018): Remember Castlevania 3? Inti Creates sure did! This prequel to the still unreleased Koji Igarashi Kickstarter project Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is an unabashed love letter to Castlevania 3, and it’s pretty good. Mom Hid My Game! (Nintendo Switch, 2017): A charming little game in the style of those old escape the room Flash games. It even looks like one (in the literal sense, not the pejorative). It’s not tough or replayable really, but it is $5 and consistently absurd and surprising. Yakuza 6: The Song of Life (PlayStation 4, 2018): Yakuza 6 is kind of a weird juxtaposition. It’s the final chapter of Kazuma Kiryu’s story, but also the first game to use the Yakuza team’s new Dragon Engine. The story end of things is a good, solid sendoff for a bunch of characters I’m going to miss very dearly, but the gameplay feels very formative and limited in a way that sort of reminds me of Yakuza 1. I had a good time with it overall, but I hope they manage to dial it in like they did with the previous decade of Yakuza games and make something truly excellent again. Looking at you, Judge Eyes. Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth (Nintendo 3DS, 2017): Etrian Odyssey V is a return to basics for the series, ditching things like overworlds and sub-dungeons and just pitting your party against one big labyrinth. Honestly, gotta say, I miss the stuff they left behind! The core of Etrian Odyssey is still super strong so I had fun regardless, but the overall simplicity of the game and the changes to how classes work had me missing EOIV more often than not. Soundtrack’s great though, as expected. Sonic Mania Plus (Nintendo Switch, 2018): To be completely honest, most of the stuff they added to Sonic Mania in Plus really isn’t that fantastic. Mighty’s spike and projectile immunity is fun, but Ray’s flying is more interesting than effective. Encore mode is largely disappointing, with most of it feeling identical to the base game outside of its all-new (and too hard for their own good) special stages. HOWEVER, Sonic Mania Plus was an exceptional excuse to play through Sonic Mania another six or so times. Congratulations to Sonic Mania for being game of the year for two years in a row. WarioWare Gold (Nintendo 3DS, 2018): A good compilation game, executed much better than in the team’s previous Rhythm Heaven Megamix, but lacking in reasons to come back after you’ve played all the games. There’s the usual toy room stuff WarioWare has had since Touched!, but it’s bogged down by reliance on a currency system and the fact that sooooo many things you unlock are just parts that feed into a larger, not that interesting thing. The part where you play WarioWare is great though, and the new visuals make it all feel fresh even though it’s mostly older games. Mario Tennis Aces (Nintendo Switch, 2018): I had a brief, passionate love affair with Mario Tennis Aces. The core gameplay is rad as hell and more like a fighting game than a tennis game, with multiple different special shots and a focus on meter management. I played like 40+ hours of it between the full game and the demo and never even touched the single player (which makes it technically not count for this list, but, shut up). I got 2nd place at its very first tournament at CEO 2018. Then I... stopped playing. It had some weird balance issues, sure, but I think it was more a victim of circumstance rather than anything else. I moved basically right after CEO and just never went back to it. It’s still incredible though. I hope this game’s systems are the standard for Mario Tennis games going forward.
We made it! Bottom of the list! It was a shorter trip this time, but I’m still proud of you for making it here all the same. Thank you for reading the words I typed about video games. I’m looking to get this web page back into gear in 2019, so you can probably expect part 2 of The Best Babies sometime in January. Hopefully I’ll actually play some video games too so I can bring back Breviews on the first of February. Until then!

Xbox Game Pass: New Games for July and August 2021 Revealed
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Xbox Game Pass is Microsoft’s subscription service for Xbox One owners. It’s designed to be like a “Netflix for games,” where you pay a simple monthly rate and get access to loads of games for download. It’s not to be confused with the Xbox Live Gold membership, which gives users a selection of free games each month.
There has been a huge surge in popularity and profile for Xbox Game Pass since its launch, mainly due to the diverse list of games and first-party exlusives on the service. In fact, Microsoft drops new releases from its own internal studios onto the service on day one! Sea of Thieves was the first example of this, followed by State of Decay 2 and Crackdown 3. Since then, the service has seen the day one launch of several other high-profile Xbox exclusives, including Gears 5, The Outer Worlds, and Halo: Reach on the Halo: The Master Chief Collection.
Membership to Xbox Game Pass will set you back $9.99 per month. You can now also get an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription for $1 for the first month and $14.99 every month after that. The subscription includes an Xbox Live Gold membership as well as all of the games offered on Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass for PC. Plus, with cloud support, you can play a selection of Xbox Game Pass titles on your Android phone. And now you even get access to titles on EA Play, the third-party publisher’s own on-demand service.
New games are added each month to Xbox Game Pass. Here are the latest games coming to the service (with descriptions courtesy of the Xbox team):
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });

I Couldn’t Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job - Episode 08
Alright, I guess I should do shit. It’s I Couldn’t Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job, episode 08! Here we GO!
-So Nova’s collapsed, and soaked in sweat. What could have done this?!
-Opening!
-Episode 08: The Demon Lord’s Daughter is Tending to Customers in a Swimsuit.
-…So that episode title is on the nose. And Fino steps in and realizes how hot it is and this SUCKS. She was promised AC! It’s way hotter in here than even outside…Raul’s first thought is a fire monster might have gotten into the shop. Nova, what happened?! A-Air…An aeroframe, the deadly fire dragon?!
-If that’s the case, he has to figure out a plan, and fast…If the Aeroframe has gotten to Nova and entered her body, the only way to save her is to cool her off…These clothes have to come off, and now! Boing boing boing.
-Where’s the dragon?
-You said there was a dragon.
-Cue Seara and Viser who want to know why Raul is undressing Nova. There was a dragon! She said there was a dragon! Raul please don’t bring your kinks to work. THIS IS NOT KINK. Yes, whatever you say. But they get Nova back to some actual recovery…And when all the confusion is done, Raul is deeply humiliated as they imply he’s gone all chuuni.
-But when it’s all said and done, yeah, it turns out that the store’s just hot because they have no AC but run a shitton of appliances to be ready to test them. …Real talk, you have those AC units for sale on the rear wall, I say just kick them all on and refuse to acknowledge the front half of the store exists. (I may not be the one to listen to.)
-They’ve got Lore working on the AC, but until it’s fixed, they’re just gonna suffer…And Fino ultimately ends up curling up into the break room sink like a god damned cat. They should close the store for the day! That’s not how it works. And then Viser calls them into the back…
-Because they just got in a bunch of seasonal stuff. As part of the fight to beat Amada, they’re now going to sell seasonal goods until this stock runs out. …This is gonna be a difficult battle, indeed.
-So that’s how Raul and Fino end up out in the courtyard, under a shade but stuck in the actual summer heat, trying to sell goods. And Fino is seriously not handling the heat well. You’d think being in an utter hellscape would mean she was good at it, but no, that was just the public entrance…The actual castle was 99 levels down in the nice cool dungeon. And yeah she’s sweating like crazy, she’s soaking her clothes…
-…Her clothes…Which do not include a bra. Why do you not have a bra?! She ditched it a while ago, because it was hot. …Go put it on you stupid dork! And Fino is starting to leak excess magic. This is not good. It’s doubly not good when she touches the box of fireworks, and sets them all off, and good news, the boxes were oriented upwards. So we didn’t all just die.
-Across town, Airi sees the fireworks while getting ready for her shift, and learns about their summer sale…Then back to the store, where Raul and Fino’s uniforms are destroyed from all the fireworks going off. So Seara decides that Fino should wear one of these branded bikinis for the summer sale! Raul doubts this is a good plan, but Fino is full game. And even Nova wants to wear one! Boss, you should join them! Seara you are far too quick to agree to things like this.
-Changing sceeeeene
-And soon all the lustful men of town are attracted to the sights. Viser would like Raul to explain to him, very carefully, how they ended up with this situation. …He genuinely has no idea where to even begin.
-But it is working…Raul and Viser are soon selling all kinds of goods in their courtyard storefront, even as the hellish heat continues to grow. But at least they’re making good money, right? And Seara goes to check on Lore, who’s found that the AC is…Well it’s in rough condition. And also Seara wants Lore in a bikini of her own. Seara, do you ever stop? Ever? At all?
-Back in the courtyard, Fino wants to try a kiddy pool…And so a pair of them get brought out and inflated. Consider them demo units! And it’s not long before they’re able to sell a few…And then when Elza and Lam-chan swing by, Seara somehow manages to recruit them into helping with more sexy swimsuits.
-By this point, it’s…42.1 degrees. Now if that’s celsius, that’s 107.8 fahrenheit. Now I often do a big posing thing about how much my summer sucks so you should shut up people from other places…But look, I’m gonna level with you. Working outside in 107 isn’t something I’d wish on anyone. This ain’t “Oh it’s 85 that’s soooo hoooootttt”, 107 is legitimately pretty fuckin’ dangerous. I can endure it for a little while, but I’ve lived in the desert my entire life and am also incredibly stubborn.
-So with that kind of heat, how are they going to get attention…Especially on some of these higher-end items that will bring legitimate profits?
-It’s Lam-chan who decides, there’s only one way to sell a camera right now. …OI, PERVERTS! BUY A CAMERA AND YOU GET TO TAKE A PICTURE OF ONE OF THEM IN THEIR BIKINI WITH IT! Elsa, pose for the nice perverts!
-Shit, it’s working. And then Viser has to literally drag Seara away so she doesn’t pose for all the perverts.
-While Lore finally finishes the AC. Thank god, things can go back to normal. And that’s how they literally run out of cameras, and Elza kind of geeked out enough with the new purchases that people stopped focusing on her so much. …Then she starts flirting with Raul, wanting him to take a sexy picture of her, and Raul’s brain cracks like an egg.
-Oh, and that’s when Airi shows up and what kind of two-timing man are you?! Weren’t you with Fino just the other day, now you’re dating this, this…
-Stop. Just, stop, Airi. Right now. Why are you here? Recon. …Well you sure admitted that quick. For a top student you must have avoided all the stealth electives. She’s here to strike against you in the name of Amada! And cue Lam-chan who can see blatantly that this angry blonde has a crush on Raul. Great, she’ll add you to the list. You’re gonna be at a disadvantage compared to Elza and Fino, but hey, if you try hard, anything’s possible! Now put this bikini on. …WHY?!
-And that’s how Airi ends up peer pressured into a bikini, and given a plausibly deniable domino mask in case anyone from the store comes by. And when Airi kicks a would-be pervert, Lam-chan sees a plan! GENTLE PERVERTS! ANYONE WITH A MASOCHISTIC STREAK WHO SPENDS AT LEAST THREE THOUSAND GOLD GETS KICKED BY THE MYSTERIOUS BIKINI MASK!
-Y-You can’t do that! Airi doesn’t even work here!
-Well neither does Lam-chan.
-Yeah, but…Ah ha, so maybe Airi has more of an advantage than she thought! Anyways, by the time the sun is low in the sky, they’ve sold far more than they ever planned…And that’s when the son from last time comes by. It seems he’s a news writer, and he’s decided he wants to give back a little. He wants to do a lifestyle article about you guys, about the fact that this store goes so far above and beyond anyone else, and what it means for the community.
-Credits!
-Aftercredits! When that article comes out, one of the corporate guys for Amada is very, very mad at his store manager…He put his faith in you to destroy that little shop, and look at how little you’ve done. Get out of here. They’re done. And that’s when a mysterious figure steps through a mirror, intending to do whatever will lead to the planned fate for Fino-sama…!
Well shit.

How the fuck did you accidentally punch your teacher
okay so like, the school im at is a huge school. not in terms of size but like, its basically every grade packed into a small building and ive been here pretty much all of my life (lowkey awful place tho i am SO glad to b transferring finally) and ever since kindergarten this one teacher would always threaten to send bad kids to the “dungeon”. she would always tell stories about it and, being very young, we were pretty scared of it. She has a tradition where the oldest students, once theyve finally suffered through the hellscape of that school, will get a blindfolded tour of the dungeon on the last day (we arent allowed to tell the younger kids about what its like). I, naturally, was fucking pumped. this is the thing that every kid DREAMS of getting to do and it was finally my year. so we get blindfolded and she loops us through the halls before eventually getting to the entrance (its a REALLY small tunnel, you have to crawl) and it leads into this small, dark room (pitch black with our blindfolds). theres stuff hanging from the ceiling and things covering the floor and walls, but she also gets teachers to reach out and touch you and rattle things and stuff. there would be bowls of stuff like orbees or whatever to be pretend guts and all that jazz and we were constantly bumping into eachother and stuff because of just how small the room is, so naturally some of the people i was with were screaming. I, on the other hand just NEEDED the full experience, so im touching EVERYTHING. at would point i held hands with someone trying to touch my shoulder, and i found a rubber chicken hanging from the roof, but basically im swinging my arms around kind of wildly (the tour is short, i needed to find Everything okay) and on the way out i manage to just slightly branch off from the rest of the group and whip my arms out in front of me trying to touch stuff, and i just happen to sock someone whos standing in front of me (it was a hard hit, i was in a rush). i pretty quickly realized that it was someone supposed to be a “kid”, and as i try to step further i just hear the very out of character and disappointed voice of my teacher saying “your group is that way, ______” and directing me out. and thats why i punched my teacher.
