Newsies Goil
“Dat goil over there s called Emma.” Jack says pointing her out to Racetrack.
The newsie goil was far better than that bitch Sarah, who fooled CowBoy and then cheated on him.
“I’s love you.” Emma said and Jack smiled at her.
“I love that you’se a Newsie Goil. Dat’s so much better than Sarah. I’s love you too.”
Too show his love, Jack begins to serenade her.
“Wow.” She says. “I never knew you could play the piano.
“I’m full of surprises.” Jack says back with a wink. “Did you know that I have enough money for a wedding. You can get a dress and be the prettiest goil there.”
“I don’t wanna wear a dress.” She says frowning. “Those are so girly.”
Jack laughs and keeps singing Jar of Hearts by Christina Perri.
“Yous is right bout dat.” He says. “That’s like you wearing make up.”
They both laugh at his joke as they both know she doesn’t wear make up like Sarah to try and impress the boys. Her face is naturally pale and flawless with her green eyes bright even with no mascara.
She watches intensely as Jack keeps playing the piano. He must still be sad about Sarah cheating on him with Blink and Skittery two separate times she thinks, because how much emotion he puts into the song as his eyes tear up.
Tears start to stream down his cheeks as he sings about ice in her soul and Emma wants to hug him.
Her raven black hair covers her face as she looks down. She likes to stand like this so no one can see how ugly she is although she always has boys chasing her. She doesn’t understand why.
Jack finishes his song and she doesn’t look up.
“I won’t cheat on you like dat bitch Sarah.”
“I trust you.” Jack says and they kiss.
Jack goes home to tell davey and the other boys that he’s in love.
Emma is about to leave to but then she spots a man in the corner. One she never thought she’d see again.
Morris Delancey. A bully of the newsies.
She quickly tucked her hair under her hat to disguise herself as a boy again like she did for a year, it always helped her sell the most papers when she pretended to be a boy, especially because there were no goil newsies.
she was surprised when Morris started to cry.
“What’s wrong.” She asked trying to keep her voice low to disguise she was a girl, it was difficult because her long eyelashes could give her away so she had to disguise everything good.
“I don’t need no help from a newsie.” Morris says but his eyes are sad.
She hates him for hurting her friends but she feels bad for him also.
She decides to help him because if she wanted to she could beat him in a fight. She would take the chance at talk to him.
She did it last week when he had made a comment at Jack, the love of her life. She had punched his r face and broke his nose and was too fast for him.
“Even delanceys can get sad.” She says as comfort and he nods. “What’s wrong.”
“Ise in love with the prettiest girl I ever seen with raven black hair and green eyes. She’s 4 ft 5 inches but she disappeared before I could tell her I love her.”
Emma gasps. There’s no way he can be talking about her can he??
But she is that short she thinks. She always needs Mush’s help to climb into her bunk and reach things cause she’s too tiny.
It’s hard being the only news goil.

hmm for the fic title thing could u do
"the man who sold the world"
I have no idea what it would be about but tbh I love everything u write :)
i have talked about my 'davey as pulitzer's assistant' au a BIT on this account but i don't think i ever went in on what it actually entails, and this title is just perfect for it.
so the gist is, instead of getting a job selling papers, davey is somehow able to get a job as working closely for pulitzer. i don't really know how this would've happened for davey since there are very little possibilities for him to have ever gotten a job like this, so i think it majorly boiled down to luck - he just happened to be in the right place at the right time and landed a job for it. in songs like 'watch what happens (reprise)' we can see davey is idealistic, but he's not delusional; he has hope when he's given reason to have it, but he still understands what his place in society is and how best to preserve it. we can see it in act one - davey does not want to rock the boat. he would anchor the boat and starve in it if it meant just staying afloat. so i think davey would understand what an unfathomably lucky opportunity this is and, as a kid unused to luck, he doesn't want to lose it, since after his father getting injured, he is basically all that's keeping his family standing. his entire life revolves around keeping his job. he drops out of school so he can fund sarah and les's education instead. he's tired all the time so his father can afford to rest. their tiny tenement is still tiny, but at least they're warm most nights. davey doesn't make it home for dinner some nights, but who cares, he can sleep on the weekend! or when he's dead. whichever comes first.
fast forward to the day jack starts the strike - specifically, the point in 'the world will know' where he and crutchie march into pulitzer's office (sans davey and les for obvious reasons). instead of getting tossed out by a security guard, they're politely sidestepped by an unassuming kid who jack could probably knock over with a feather. he's polished, polite, has the perfect customer service type voice, but his smile doesn't reach his eyes. he looks through them like they're not even there and says 'welcome gentlemen, do you have an appointment?'. jack's barely said two words before he's barrelling on, 'oh, i'm sorry, mister pulitzer is in a meeting, can i take a memo?' they try again, but 'that's nice, the world takes feedback very seriously, i'll make sure to pass it along, thank you for your interest and good day :)'. jack's about to punch this wetrag out and run into that office himself when something shifts in this boy, turns him from some gaunt looking schoolboy into something sharper, harder, something carved out of steel - and he takes jack by his bandana and says 'listen, cowboy, i don't know what you're playing at, but either i get security to throw you out or we both lose our jobs. either way, you're out of here.' and. well. we all know about jack's famous competency kink. i think he'd become enamoured with how quickly davey went from being just a forgettable face in the background to a force to be reckoned with - i think he'd realize pretty quickly that davey's pretending just as much as jack is and would really want to bring that force out of him more and more, seeking him out to pester him and so on, thus leading to davey becoming more involved in the strike.
(i also envision a big 'pointing spiderman' moment when davey and kath meet each other through the newsies in this au. big 'i saw her at the devil's sacrament!' 'girl what were YOU doing at the devil's sacrament??' energy)
i think 'the man who sold the world' would be a good allegory for davey's arc in this au. davey sold his whole life, his world, to pulitzer. i imagine in this au he would barely know what's going on in his family's life anymore - who knows, maybe les still turns up at the newsstand looking to buy papers out of a clumsy, childish attempt to help his brother not have to work so much, and there can be a big moment of davey arriving at the rally, seeing les, and realising oh. his brother has a whole life and davey didn't see any of it. he doesn't have any spark about him anymore, he's too bogged down by the burnout. that's why jack gets so interested in drawing out that sharpness from him he saw in their first confrontation, and why he keeps on seeking davey out - and why davey begins to seek jack out right back, becoming more involved in the strike despite his association with the world and pulitzer as he begins to believe more and more in this idea that he and every other worker does hold power over their employer. i also imagine that'd be part of pulitzer's blackmail against jack, threatening to both fire davey and blacklist him to other businessmen, making him unable to provide for his family, as well as arrest les for being part of the newsboy union. but when davey still insists on partaking in the strike and takes part in the children's crusade (and maybe convincing other workers like hannah to do the same since i imagine he'd have a close working relationship with them), he gets to see firsthand how pulitzer's office falls apart without him and sells out the company that took over his life for a better future.
thanks for the ask anon! i know the ask game said 'SHORT synopsis' but uh... lol xd i guess? i really really love this au-
ask game is here if anyone else would like to send something in!

Melody’s Movie Reviews #1: Newsies (1992)
Hey guys. Welcome to the very first post of Melody’s Movie Reviews.
Today, I’m going to be reviewing Newsies (1992). Yes, the original movie version with Christian Bale. I watched for the first time at the beginning of the year and I enjoyed it. And then, I watched it again just four months ago
Here were my exact thoughts while watching Newsies (1992):
Hearing Max Casella’s voice at the opening really made me excited.
I felt so bad for all these little boys sleeping on top of the statue without any shoes on their feet.  It was pretty heartbreaking.
Boots is literally me when I don’t want to get up. All the boys are basically a mood for anyone who isn’t a morning person.
Me and my mom were watching this, and she was disgusted at the fact that Snitch had his feet on Itey’s face, and they were both dirty.
Christian Bale is adorable in this scene.
And of course, Snipeshooter takes Racetrack’s cigars for no reason. Ugh! Snipeshooter always gets on my nerves. No wonder he’s my least favorite!
Carrying The Banner starts playing and I’m loving every second of it. The choreography and the chemistry with the boys. It’s so obvious that all the boys vibed together in real life off-set, and that’s one of the thing I love about this movie.
Oh, geez, it’s those Delancey brothers. And they go picking on Snipeshooter for no reason. Snipeshooter isn’t my favorite, but he still doesn’t deserve it.
Racetrack really said “only I'm allowed to pick on Snipeshooter.”
Jack’s play-fight with the Delanceys is very entertaining to see. A
In this scene, we’re introduced to Davey and Les. I can already tell that I’m going to like this.
I love how these boys mock Wiesel by calling him Weasel.I would do the same thing.
Les is sooo cute when he sits next to Jack! And their interactions are really sweet!
I like how David doesn’t want anything to do with Jack at first, but Les instantly connects with him. Also, the part where Jack squishes his face is so cute!
Instantly as the newsies sell their papers, Pulitzer comes on the scene.
Even Seitz has more common sense in his little finger than Pulitzer and his cronies combined.
Oh, No! Here comes big jerk Snyder the Spider. My mom didn’t know why he was chasing Jack, so I had to explain it to her halfway.
Ann-Margaret is amazing as Medda. And I loved her interaction with Les. It’s so adorable!
Here’s where we meet the Jacobs family. I love how everyone takes a liking to Jack. And I especially love how he takes a liking to Sarah from the very beginning. Les singing “Lovey-Dovey Baby” in his sleep is so funny!
This is where Jack and Davey become friends. And this is where Santa Fe starts playing. And let me tell you how excited I was when that song played. 92sies has the best version of Santa Fe. Christian Bale didn’t have to go so hard, but he did!
I will never forgive Kenny Ortega for cutting out the lasso scene, especially since Christian worked so hard on it.
This is where The World Will Know starts playing. It’s a great song, and 92sies’ version is the best one! Everyone did such an amazing job!
This where we meet Bryan Denton, and he has such chemistry with David. Also, David is so adorable in this scene when he’s blushing! I knew that Jack and Les would be kicked out the doors, but Jack is a badass as always in this scene. So is Les!
This is where we meet Spot Conlon for the first time. To be honest, I thought I was going to hate him, but then I instantly started to like him!
Les repeating “real hoity toity” is so freaking adorable. Matter of fact, everything he does in this movie is so adorable!
Seize the Day is just starting and I’m already pumped. David Moscow really went hard for this number! And he didn’t have any dance training at all!
The little newsies during Seize the Day are so cute!  Especially Boots, Les, and Flipper!
Jack making faces at Weasel against the window never fails to make me laugh!
I was literally screaming when Crutchy got taken away to the Refuge.
I’ve only seen Ten-Pin for two seconds and I really don’t like him. The way he insulted ed Crutchy by calling him a g*mp is absolutely disgusting. Movie Jack didn’t take well to that! Musical Jack just called Crutchy a cr*p without any qualms!
Aaaannnnd here’s Big Jerk Snyder!
The boys singing during Seize The Day (Chorale) sound like a choir of angels, and I’m loving it. The choreography is absolutely amazing and it reminds me of Michael Jackson.
It’s so adorable how the little newsies made drums for this number.
Annnd here’s Spot Conlon and Brooklyn! I was clapping when they arrived! I was cheering when they won and Denton took the picture!
This is when King of New York starts playing! The tap dancing is amazing, but I bet the costumers were thinking “Those kids are ruining the tables.”
I always skip this scene of the confrontation between Snyder and Crutchy because I can sence that something even worse is gonna happen.
Sarah and Jack didn’t even have that many scenes together, but they had more chemistry than musical Jack and Katherine did.
I really like Seitz. He knows that what Pulitzer is doing is wrong!
Ooh, the Rally scene (aka, the scene where everything gets real). And I was singing along during High Times, Hard Times. Also, seeing Medda with all the newsies was so entertaining to see! They’re just vibing!
Aaaand here comes Big Jerk Snyder, again. I can tell that things are gonna go wrong, again!
Seeing Racetrack being brutally attack made me so mad that I shouted out “NO! Leave Racetrack alone.” This scene pissed me off the first time I saw it!
Pulitzer and Snyder just piss me off already.
I can tell that Jack has been broken down during the Santa Fe reprise.
The scene where Jack scabs breaks my heart. Everyone is pissed off at Jack and Mush is more sad and heartbroken!
I really hate Weisel!
Jack kicking the Delanceys’ butts for messing with his girlfriend and his best friends made me root for him, even after he scabbed.
This version of Once and For All is a lot better and catchier, especially since there was no unnecessary electric guitar.  The way every working kid in New York came together, whether it be a chimney sweep, or a sweatshop kid, makes me very happy! It shows that child labor hurt everyone, not just the newsies.
That part where Jack nearly leaves for Santa Fe really got me!
And now Jack made Les cry!
Seeing Les cry was really heartbreaking! I would’ve hugged him and cupped his chubby cheeks!
Everyone’s just standing there waiting to get their papers and then suddenly, Jack comes back! And then he makes out with Sarah!
I love how Spot rode back to Brooklyn in a carriage!
Yeah, I love the movie version better than Broadwaysies and Livesies!

Tell me about something you're writing, a story idea, headcannon for a favorite ship, or thoughts on a show, movie, and/or Broadway show. What's been going through your brain begging to be let out during your very swamped year? Share your joy and/or angst with us. :)
Hello, dear friend! Thank you for this ask. As much as I want to come up with a writing/fandom/reintroduction meme (and I will try), having a question to direct my thoughts helps a lot.
What am I writing? Well, the easy answer is "nothing," as I haven't touched my stories in so long - but I am hoping to change that! Life has not allowed for fandom writing in a long time, but I'm going to try and ease back in, and see if I can get back into my 300x3 habit - 300 words, 3 times a week. It was good for me before and helped me move through a lot of stories, so maybe it will be good for me again.
That said, maybe the better question is "What am I thinking about writing?" And that list is long, but some things are closer to the top of the queue than others.
The first thing is actually part of a series. I started the third installment of my Lucy/Caspian AU (Sea and Stars) for the Narnia After Dark fest this year, and didn't get to finish it (despite the fact that the deadlines were set around pagan holidays, which was delightful!). I really, really want to finish this story and share it with the Narnia folks who love and participate in NAD.
The second thing is another continuation. I wrote a story a while ago called Three Ways Peggy Carter Could Have Come Back from the Dead - and One Way She Did. The original story had four possibilities, and was set up as a series of snapshots. I got pretty invested in each idea, and in February I wrote a second chapter that was a continuation of the first possibility, picking up that story thread and showing some more of how it played out. I'd like to do the second possibility next, and see what happens.
I've also had a couple of nascent story ideas floating around in my head that I haven't started - a new Jo/Laurie story based on a Brahms song (and yes, that Jo and Laurie from Little Women), and a new Jack/Sarah story inspired by Sara Bareilles' song "Poetry of Dead Men." The latter has been in my brain for a long time, and I'd really like to get it down.
All of those feel like they are lower stakes than my massive Newsies love letter, We'll Be There to Defend One Another. I love this story so much, and my brain has been grinding into gear again about it recently, mulling over plot lines and details and how to resolve the many pieces I've put into play. It's just a lot - it's a lot of detail and a lot of research, and as much as I love this story and everything about it, it feels very high stakes because I'm so invested in the finished product living up to what I want it to be. So that may take longer to attempt, just because the stakes of it feel so much higher.
There are other things lingering in my WIP pile that I could finish, too, but I'll stop there! That's a good start. :)

Just one look and I can hear a bell ring. One more look and I forget everything.
Script below the break
Hello and welcome back to The Rewatch Rewind! My name is Jane, and this is the podcast where I count down my top 40 most rewatched movies. Today I will be talking about number 26 on my list: Universal Pictures, Littlestar Productions, Playtone, and Relativity Media’s 2008 musical Mamma Mia!, directed by Phyllida Lloyd, written by Catherine Johnson adapted from the stage musical book also by Catherine Johnson, and starring Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgård, and Colin Firth.
Shortly before getting married, Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), who was raised by single mom Donna (Meryl Streep), discovers that she has three possible fathers: Sam (Pierce Brosnan), Bill (Stellan Skarsgård), and Harry (Colin Firth). She decides to invite them all to her wedding, assuming that she’ll know her father on sight and her life will feel complete. Dysfunction, hilarity, and ABBA songs ensue.
Okay so I’m going to apply what my sister Rosemary said about Newsies to Mamma Mia!: this movie is objectively not good. The plot doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, most of the songs don’t really help tell the story in a particularly meaningful way, and the singing is not great. This is the kind of movie musical I was criticizing in the Chicago episode for casting stars who aren’t really singers and just letting them sing badly. Not that everyone in Mamma Mia! is a terrible singer; they’re just…not all great. I can’t say that every singer in Chicago is better than every singer in Mamma Mia! because then Christine Baranski would have to be better than herself. Anyway, while I recognize that this is not a good movie, it does make me feel good. Watching it gives me a rush of dopamine, and I think I was practically addicted to it for a while. Part of that is because it came out at exactly the right time for me.
I wouldn’t say that I was a particularly big ABBA fan prior to seeing this movie, but I did enjoy some of their songs. The main thing I remember about my senior prom – which, incidentally, was in May of 2008 – is that for most of the evening I didn’t recognize any of the music. I’m sure they were popular songs of the day, since a lot of my peers were singing along, but as discussed in previous episodes, I spent most of high school listening to Julie Andrews, so I was very out of touch. But toward the end of the evening, when most kids had left for afterparties or whatever, they started playing older songs for the chaperones, and I remember being so thrilled when Dancing Queen came on – finally, I song I knew!
A few months later, when I saw Mamma Mia! in theaters, even though I didn’t recognize a lot of the songs, I still felt a similar thrill at the uplifting tone of the music. And I really needed it. In addition to the whole “I just graduated from high school and I have no clue what I’m doing with my life and the world is dark and scary” thoughts that were dominating my consciousness, that specific weekend was particularly stressful. Rosemary and I were at this youth church retreat focused on service and social justice, which overall was interesting, except only one other youth from our church came with us, and he wasn’t even there the whole time, and our youth leader had a lot of other responsibilities and couldn’t spend a lot of time with us either, so I was mostly just hanging out with my sister and the assistant youth leader, trying to figure out what we were supposed to be doing. It was fine, but it felt a little bit like nobody wanted to hang out with us. But then at one point we had an afternoon of free time between retreat activities, and the leader who had barely been around decided we should go see a movie, but then she had trouble finding the theater. So we walked in a few minutes after Mamma Mia! had started. My sister had seen it before, but I had not. I was kind of frustrated with the whole dysfunctional youth group situation going into it, but it only took a few minutes of the movie to make me feel like I would never be frustrated again.
I saw it at least twice in theaters, and later got it on DVD and could not stop rewatching it. I managed to see it six times in 2008 and five times in 2009. And then, just like with Frozen a few years later, I hit the 11 views in a little over a year threshold and needed to take a break. Also like Frozen, there were a lot of people bashing it online, but at least with Mamma Mia! I didn’t care quite as much. With Frozen I deeply related to the characters and felt personally attacked by the criticism. Mamma Mia! hate irritated me, but if other people couldn’t handle its happiness and fun, that was their loss. Anyway, after 2009 I kept listening to the soundtrack, but I didn’t rewatch Mamma Mia! again until 2016, when I saw it once. Then I watched it twice in 2018, and once in each year after that. My love for this movie was revitalized in 2018 because that was when I saw the stage show for the first time, and then a few months later the sequel/prequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again came out. It’s weird because the story had already made very little sense, and then that movie directly contradicted so many things from the first one that the whole thing became even more utterly incomprehensible, and yet, somehow, that doesn’t really bother me too much. The plot is not the point; I’m here for the mood.
Watching this movie really feels like going on vacation. It was mostly filmed on location on a gorgeous Greek island, and the bright sunshine and sparkling sea mixed with upbeat ABBA jams really melt all worldly cares away. Which is a little odd because the characters go through a lot of stressful drama. But to the audience, the stakes never feel very high. Donna is stressed after seeing her three former lovers, but mostly because she doesn’t want Sophie to find out about them, when we know that Sophie was the one who invited them. Sophie is stressed because she doesn’t immediately recognize her father, and maybe some audience members do want to know which one it is, but ultimately it doesn’t matter, and she just needs to learn that.
It may seem a little strange that an aromantic asexual like me would love a movie so full of relentlessly alloromantic and allosexual characters, but I really enjoy that, even though most of them do predictably end up paired off romantically by the end, there’s a lot of focus on trios of friends. Sophie has her two bridesmaids, and Donna has her two best friends – arguably the best characters in the movie, played by the always fabulous Christine Baranski and Julie Walters. And then there are the three fathers, who don’t know each other at the beginning but develop a nice bromance by the end, when they agree to share the honor of being Sophie’s dad. These three friendship trios, along with the mother-daughter relationship between Donna and Sophie, seem stronger and more important than most of the romantic pairs, and as I’ve said before, that’s really what I want out of most movies. I’m never suggesting that romance should be eliminated entirely; I’m merely sick of romantic partnerships constantly being portrayed as the number one most important relationship in everyone’s lives. So I enjoy that Mamma Mia! focuses so much on non-romantic relationships, even in the midst of its romances.
I also appreciate the ways that the story challenges the traditional family structure of one man married to one woman, raising their biological children together. Not that there’s anything wrong with that; obviously, that works for a lot of people, and that’s great for them. But that’s not going to work for everyone, and there isn’t anything wrong with that either, but there’s a major stigma against wanting, or ending up with, any other kind of family structure, which goes hand-in-hand with the stigma against women having sex outside of marriage. When Donna got pregnant with Sophie, her mother disowned her – at least according to the first movie, when her mother is described as a deceased pious Catholic; not according to Here We Go Again, when her mother is a living eccentric entertainer played by Cher, who conveniently had a passionate love affair with a man named Fernando, but that’s not important. Sophie doesn’t seem to have been neglected or love starved in any way as a result of being raised by a single mom, and yet she is obsessed with finding her father simply so he can give her away at her wedding. And like, I personally have a problem with a tradition wherein one man essentially transfers ownership of a woman to a different man, but I can kind of see how, if the bride has a particularly close relationship with her father, this could be a meaningful moment. But in Sophie’s case, it makes no sense. What meaning is there in walking down the aisle with a man you met for the first time the day before? Once she thinks about it for two seconds, Sophie realizes that it makes way more sense for Donna – the person who raised her – to give her away, but prior to that she has been so steeped in amatonormativity that she not only thinks she needs to get married at 20, but also resents her mom for not settling down with a partner before she was born. Not because she really needed her dad to be in the picture, but because she thinks she was supposed to need that. When she finally realizes that she’s fine with not knowing who her biological father is, Sophie also realizes that she doesn’t want to get married yet. On the one hand, since she’s already at the altar at this point, and she’s planning on traveling with her fiancé (played by Dominic Cooper), it kind of seems like they could have gotten married and then done that, fighting the idea that married couples have to be boring and settled. But on the other hand, the main reason she wanted to rush into marriage was so she could meet her father and have him give her away at her wedding, which is a really bad reason to get married, so from that perspective it makes sense to postpone it. Now, would I like this movie better if Donna also didn’t get married? Absolutely, especially because she marries the rudest and most entitled of the possible dads. But if that’s what makes her happy, I’m fine with it.
It's worth mentioning that this is my 15th episode and it’s the first time I’m talking about a movie that was directed solely by a woman – Frozen was co-directed by a man and a woman – and that it was also written by a woman. I know I said that this isn’t a good movie, but Hollywood is so saturated with mediocre films made by mediocre men that it’s rather refreshing to see a big-budget blockbuster made by women that, if it’s a bit of a mess, at least is a fun mess. For once, the female characters are complex and relatively well developed, and the men mainly serve as eye candy for the straight women in the audience. Also, given the observations I made in past episodes about how much younger Cary Grant’s leading ladies were compared to him later in his career, it’s nice to see a movie with great roles for actresses over 40. Meryl Streep was pushing 60 when this movie came out, which made her about 15-20 years older than the character she was playing, but I mean, it’s Meryl Streep – she could play any character of any age convincingly. Dancing Queen is a song I used to associate with youth – the lyrics literally say “young and sweet, only 17” – but its context in this film turns it into a song about feeling young at heart regardless of numerical age, and empowering women to step away from their responsibilities and dance down to the water and jump in, for some reason. Like much of the movie, that scene doesn’t make a ton of sense, but I absolutely love it. I mean, yes, the fighting amatonormativity aspects are great and all, but let’s be honest, that has very little to do with why I love this movie. The real reason I love Mamma Mia! is because it falls into probably my favorite category of movie, which I like to call Everybody Making This Was Having Way Too Much Fun.
And nothing more perfectly demonstrates that than the end credits. I know that saying that my favorite part of the movie is the end credits sounds like I’m implying that it’s because I’m glad the movie is over, but seriously, the end credits of Mamma Mia! are EVERYTHING. They start with Meryl Streep, Christine Baranski, and Julie Walters in amazingly ridiculous 1970s costumes singing and dancing to a reprise of Dancing Queen, which is delightful in and of itself. Then after the song ends, Meryl asks the audience, “Do you want another one?” a few times, and then they start performing Waterloo. When they get to the chorus, Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgård, and Colin Firth join them wearing similar costumes, as do Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper a bit later, and the whole experience truly defies description in the best possible way. If you haven’t seen this movie, please, I am begging you, look up the end credits on YouTube, I promise you will not be disappointed. Colin Firth’s commitment alone is worth watching. In fact, Colin Firth’s performance is consistently one of my favorite parts of the movie. The way the clearly deliberate Harry tries to convince people that he’s spontaneous is hilarious and perfectly done. While I would prefer to see LGBTQ+ characters played by LGBTQ+ actors, I feel like Colin Firth does a relatively good job of playing gay in Mamma Mia! without being too disrespectful about it. And then he rocks his ridiculous outfit at the end and puts his entire being into that dance as if he has been waiting his whole life for an opportunity to do something like this. When asked in an interview, “If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?”, Colin Firth famously answered, “I personally thought you were very good in Mamma Mia!” Obviously I can’t speak for God, but I personally think that “very good” is an understatement.
I could talk about how Pierce Brosnan was miscast, but I think that’s been discussed enough, so all I’ll say is he tried. His character’s bad communication skills irritate me far more than the actor’s bad singing. Seriously, this entire situation could have been avoided if back in the day Sam had told Donna that he was going home to break up with his fiancée and then coming back to her, but no, he for some reason thought she would be waiting for him when all she knew was that he was engaged to someone else. And then in present day, he just lets her think he’s still married, and stands there silently while she sings the entirety of The Winner Takes It All, bringing the plot, such as it was, to a grinding halt, when it would have taken him like two seconds to say, “I’m divorced and I’m still in love with you.” He doesn’t tell her he's divorced until after he proposes! It’s like, dude, you can’t keep waiting until the most dramatic moment possible to tell people things! No wonder your first marriage fell apart! Even though I know that the story is nonsense, I can’t help overanalyzing it anyway, because as much as I don’t feel like I should, I really do absolutely love everything about this movie.
And the feeling that I should be ashamed of something I’m not actually ashamed of was particularly pertinent around the time this movie came out, because graduates of my high school are kind of expected to head straight to a prestigious 4-year university, and I was just going to a community college. I knew it was the right decision for me at the time, but other people made me feel like I should feel bad about it. I have this distinct memory, probably from late 2008 or early 2009, of standing in the aisle of a crowded bus heading to community college and listening to Meryl Streep singing the Mamma Mia! title song and just feeling so happy and at peace. There was nowhere I would have rather been at that moment than on that bus listening to that song. I felt okay with following my own path at my own pace, and I felt okay with loving a movie other people said was garbage. Sometimes I still struggle to maintain that mindset, but rewatching Mamma Mia! is one of the things that helps remind me.
Thank you for listening to me discuss another of my most rewatched movies, especially if you’re someone who does not enjoy Mamma Mia! I do sincerely hope that each and every person listening has at least one movie that they know isn’t good but still love anyway. It’s a very different feeling from loving a movie that is almost universally praised by critics and audiences alike, although they’re both great feelings. In fact, the movie I’ll be talking about next week falls into the latter category, so stay tuned for my thoughts on a much more highly acclaimed film, which is the shortest of five that I watched 19 times in the 20 years I was tracking. As always, I will leave you with a quote from that next movie: “Forgive me for not leaping for joy. Bad back, you know.”

📝 Project Frequency tag list invitation
Hello, my lovelies!
I do a lot of writeblr tags and throw snippets of Project Frequency (my current WIP) around all the time, but I rarely if ever post actual newsy updates about how it's going.
I'd like to start doing that, along with writing-adjacent goodness like character info, visual references, songs from my WIP playlist and other bits and pieces that have become wedged in my obsessive little brain. These will be maybe monthly-ish? I'm not sure yet.
So...if you'd like to be on the tag list for those Project Frequency updates (including release news, when the time comes for that), please LIKE OR COMMENT ON THIS POST. I'm not including reblogs as sign-me-up interactions because people here are wonderful and tend to signal boost things that they might not personally be into, but that their friends and followers would enjoy. Reblogs for signal boosting purposes are always appreciated!
You can, of course, be removed from the tag list at any time - just shoot me a message or an ask and I'll take you off, no questions asked.
If you're reading this like Project what?, here's the WIP summary. And if you flat-out just can't be arsed to click a link right now or Tumblr isn't playing nicely, here's a short version of the info...
Tumblr media
Corruption and cruelty run through the veins of an opulent metropolis, where every side is the wrong side and progress is fuelled by exploitation. Too useful to waste on prison, underworld assassin Rafael Turner is sentenced to military service. When a mission to infiltrate a criminal operation drags his past to the surface and someone he thought he'd lost forever unexpectedly returns, Rafe has a chance at a future he’d given up hoping for. But how much is he willing to risk to make it a reality?
🌃 GENRE Cyberpunk/Neon-noir
📖 AUDIENCE Adult
👀 VIBE High-rise buildings and low-life scum. Everything hurts, but not enough to feel good. Yes, that’s a gun in my pocket and no, I’m not pleased to see you. If mind control is real, why do I still have to make decisions?
⭐ MAIN CHARACTER Agent Rafe Turner is a close-range weapon with a face full of scars. He’s a necessary evil, but all evil is necessary to someone. He knows fear intimately, he wrote the code, and you’re going to tell him the truth whether you want to or not. He’s a hardcore masochist with an addictive personality and a weakness for people with the guts to call him on his shit, not that he’d ever admit it. Anything he’s good at feels like a curse, and the only thing he hates more than the world and everything in it is himself.

Things I Learned From NYTW RENT AKA
Stringing Together My Incoherent Thoughts
Voice Mail #1
- The speakkk in this sounds like they hate life. Honestly same.
- Roger worked at a bar and was fired
- Mark was cut off financially
Splatter
- IM SORRY WHAT
- 20 seconds of awful Roger music and then the opening number starts playing?
- This sounds much slower
- WHAT THE ACTUAL-
- ????
- TW SUICIDAL THOUGHTS: MARK WANTS TO KILL HIMSELF BY JUMPING OUT THE WINDOW
- THATS WHY THIS SONG IS CALLED SPLATTER
- THIS IS SO MORBID
- Oh ok that’s not Adam
- What is going on with this music? It gets weirdly faster but immediately slows down im so confused
- Mark is definitely taking his and Maureen’s breakup harder here
- Every time they say “last month’s rent” instead of “last year’s rent” it throws me off
- The transition to “you ok honey” is just not it
- I can’t get over how different Collins and Joanne sound
- Ngl I miss my bass baritone Collins :(
- There is absolutely no chemistry in Cangel’s interaction whatsoever
- I’m still so shocked over how morbid this is-
- So basically Marker are both very much not ok
- The reason Mark’s parents cut him off was because he wasn’t a business major?
- I’m so glad they changed the ending to “cause everything is rent”
- Well, that was an experience
You’re A Fool
- “For someone cool you’re a fool” and then Mark’s little dejected “I know” 💀
- Do Marker even like each other? Or are they both just depressed besties-
- “Some of our parents don’t pay our bills” isn’t Mark cut off??
- “Mr. Negative cause he’s HIV positive” is such a low blow, I can’t believe that was once a Mark line considering he’s always supporting Roger, as well as telling him to go out and talking sense into him
- The lyrics are a bit bland and somewhat mean but overall I’m vibing to the music
- Ok so Mark still does try to get Roger to go out
- “I don’t fit in anymore, all right?!” hurts. I don’t know if he’s saying that because he feels as though he needs to spend all his time writing or if he’s saying that because he’s just depressed and he doesn’t have the energy to do the things he once loved
- Mark is obviously very upset at the thought of Roger dying, but doesn’t want to show it too much. He just wants to make as many memories as he can with him, and wants him to at least have fun and be surrounded by people who love him before he goes. So now I’m starting to see more of final-version-Rent Mark poke through.
- “If you only knew - I spend so much time obsessing, it’s depressing.” Woah I actually relate a lot to that Mark w h a t
- I kinda love how we get to see Mark’s personality and know a bit more about him. In the final version, we don’t really know a lot about Mark because he’s basically narrating (which is fine) until Roger calls him out before he leaves for Santa Fe
- WOAH HOW THE TABLES HAVE TURNED
- THEYRE CALLING EACH OTHER OUT NOW JUST LIKE THEY DO IN GOODBYE LOVE
Today 4 U
- THEY REALLY CHANGED THE ORDER A LOT HUH
- “Whose music is the purest on the Bowery I believe” ANGEL AS A BOWERY BEAUTY NEWSIES AU
- This song sounds the closest to the final version
- “toDay for you”
- The only difference so far that I’ve noticed is that Angel says “work so well” instead of “go so well”
- THE LINE DELIVERY FOR “That dog is now in doggy hell” I AM SCREAMING
Do A Little Business
- What exactly is going on in this song
- ✨ Benny is unhinged 😍 ✨
- LOL MARK IS SO ENTHUSIASTIC TO SEE HIM /s
- I forgot Angel was even here 💀
- “What kind of hag - I mean dog, do you have?” I AM LOSING IT
- “Evita’s an Akita” “Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.” JAIL
- I’m actually scared of Benny this man is vicious what is going on
- What is with the random Today 4 U music but at the end??
- I guess Mimi doesn’t exist 😍
Female to Female A
- If they would’ve kept this, then in Take Me or Leave Me Maureen would’ve been projecting because she’s being a little controlling rn
- Maureen’s manipulativeness is already showing
- “It’s times like these I really appreciate Mark” YOU DID NOT JUST SAY THAT-
Come to the Meeting
- I like the “Benny was a dilettante, Benny met a debutante” lyric a lot
- Roger has a car that originally belonged to April
- Angel asks about April instead of Mimi, because she simply does not exist 😍
- Mark honey you’re being a bit too harsh
- TW SELF HARM: I think I’m having trouble with the context clues here but I think Roger was a cutter :/
- Well this is just upsetting, I just feel really bad for these fictional characters ugh
He Says
- WOAH THIS IS THE SAME MELODY TO GOODBYE LOVE
- “He says he doesn’t think that love is possible anymore” “It’s not!” HEAVY FORESHADOWING. Mimi has to exist now, it only makes sense
- “One day I’ll/he’ll fix that car she left me/him and fly” Does this mean Roger’s success or his death??
- Gosh I feel a lot more sympathy for Mark in this version. Before, in the final version, I felt sorry for him because I could only imagine how scary it was for him to be the “one of us to survive” but at the same time he literally came from Scarsdale. Like sir you come from a rich neighborhood, have parents that seem to care about you and you’re out here claiming to be a struggling artist? At least you can just move back upstate when it gets too rough, the others can’t. However at the same time I wondered if maybe his family were toxic and controlling; but in this one I know a bit more about the backstory
- “I don’t believe a word he says.” I SERIOUSLY LOVE MARK. THATS ALL.
- I swear I recognize the melody at the very end of this song but I can’t pinpoint it
- OH MY GOSH
- OH NO IM GONNA CRY
- ROGER IS SINGING THE BEGINNING OF “WILL I” AND TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HIS ONE GREAT SONG AT THE SAME TIME AND SHHSHSBSUSBGAU
- My heart HURTS
- I kinda wish this would’ve been kept in, it’s so real and raw (the whole musical is but still)
The Right Brain
- ONE SONG GLORY YES
- Wait what never mind it’s called the right brain and has completely different lyrics
- “I lost my map” DOES ANYBODY HAVE A MAP ANYBODY MAYBE HAPPEN TO KNOW HOW-
- I really really like this but I can see why the lyrics were changed
- Roger screaming “right brain” instead of “glory” is absolutely sending me
- Someone called this the Zombie Version of Rent and I am crying
- That final “riiiiiight braaaaiiiinnnnn” PLEASE
- I AM SO CONFUSED
- WAIT A MINUTE
- Oh. Ok. So there’s… that.
- I’m cringing ahhh
- Oh gosh that was so off key I can’t
- This song is such a bop I’ve replayed it again but “time diiiiiiiiiiies, right braaaaaaaaainnnnn, can’t find the riiight braiiinn” 💀💀💀💀💀
- OH MY GOSH LIGHT MY CANDLE IS STARTING EVERYONE BE QUIET
- “The door!” This song really broke my already broken humor
Light My Candle
- Why does this sound like Contact?
- Oh ok there’s the LMC I know and love
- I kinda liked that buildup
- “I’m not going?” MARK??
- MIMI EXISTS!!!!!!
- Wait is this Daphne? It sounds a lot like her but doesn’t at the same time
- “What?” OK ITS DEFINITELY DAPHNE
- The knock sounds so loud in this one considering how soft they’re singing
- IM USED TO HEARING ROGERS DISBELIEVING GIGGLE WHEN HE SAYS “WHAT” BUT THIS “WHAT” MADE ME LAUGH SO HARD THIS MAN IS PROBABLY IN A TRANCE
- Someone said Roger sounds high and I couldn’t agree more lol. Also Mimi sounds somewhat ghostly to me? Does that make sense? As if she’s just some sort of phantom drifting along. I feel like Renée Elise Goldsberry’s Mimi acted ghostly during LMC too and Daphne’s was more desperate but fiery? I’ve always loved both portrayals of it, but it’s interesting to see the changes. I think because this version is significantly slower and feels almost deathly is the reason why she sounds like this
- “Here it-oh, no.” ROGER REALIZING HIS DUMB MISTAKE LOL
- “A candy bar wrapper” THAT WAS AWFUL(LY GOOD) VOICE ACTING. MIMI DEFINITELY DOESNT BELIEVE YOU NOW SO 10/10
- The “Mimi” part is a little longer
- LMC is the best song in Rent, no I am not taking any criticism - it just is
On the Street/Voice Mail #2
- The way this guy says “Christmas bells are ringing” 💀
- Joanne’s parents call her “Muffin” instead of “Kitten”
Female to Female B
- “It’s times like these I really appreciate Mark” “I heard you before” “How can someone so bright be so utterly in the dark?” I’m forming the Joanne Deserves Better club, does anyone want to join? /j
- “Isn’t it enough that I put up everyday with a temperamental, selfish, abusive-” YES JOANNE CALL HER OUT
- “And sexy.” *Rolls eyes*
- This song is actually really good
- Gosh their relationship is so toxic in this
- “I love you Maureen!” *a few seconds later* “I hate you Maureen!”
Another Day
- ANOTHER DAY LETS GO
- “No.” IM SCREAMING IM SO USED TO ADAM’S DRAMATIC, DESPERATE “NO!”
- I love the “Come back another day, another dayyyy, annnottther another daaayyy!” and the change in music
- “Your pain I see, your heart’s been burned. You’re just like me before I learned” THIS IS BOTH SO HEARTBREAKING AND SENSITIVE.
- “No other way” OK DAPHNE
- Im so glad “Honey get real, here’s the deal - it’s time for you to book I mean look you’re cute but I don’t buy that spiel” was cut. It drags the song on unnecessarily
- “Your anger’s real but just beware it’s a waste to feel that fate’s unfair, there’s no such thing as tragedy I can’t resent what’s meant to be” W H Y W A S T H I S C U T
On the Street #2
- THIS WHISTLING I JUST SNORTED
- I mean, I can’t whistle either so I shouldn’t be talking
- “Ahnest living man! 😒 *cartoon car skiddering noises* Feliz Navidad! 🙄”
- Why does “evening officers” sound so ominous-
- I can’t tell if the person playing the blanket/homeless person is running out of breath or if the audio was somehow cut
- Ok I think it’s the audio, Angel sounded really quiet for a second
Santa Fe
- Collins’ voice never ceases to surprise me
- “I preach!” “Hallelujah!” I did not expect that-
- “I beat the drum of apocalypse like orchestras on sinking ships” Is this a reference to both the aids epidemic and Titanic?
- It sounds like Collins says “you’re a sensitive a see” instead of “you’re a sensitive aesthete”
- “We’ll open up a restaurant” and “gains gains gains” interesting change??
I’ll Cover You
- The beginning is very very different
- “We’ll never be that desperate” “You’ll never have to be”
- OK ANGEL COME THROUGH WITH THE VOCALS YES AND THIS MUSIC OK
- “Open your door” Um no not with you sounding like that
- I AM LOSING IT SOMEONE SAID THIS CANGEL SOUNDS LIKE AN EPISODE OF CRIMINAL MINDS
- I miss the “yea yea yea yea yea” :(
Will I?
- Dang not them going from a (semi creepy) love song to a heart shattering support group session
You’ll Get Over It
- I SWEAR THAT FIRST NOTE SOUNDS SO MUCH LIKE THE FIRST NOTE IN “FALSETTOLAND/ABOUT TIME”
- “It’s times like these” IS THIS FALSETTOS?! THEY LITERALLY SAY “It’s about time don’t you think” IN THERE
- I mean… Falsettos did come out in ‘92
- Maureen how many times are you going to think about your ex boyfriend? You’re in a new relationship now, either respect her enough to break up with her or go get some therapy
- OH MARK IS ACTUALLY HERE NEVERMIND
- Why is she calling him “honey” and “baby” when she’s literally dating someone-
- Oh gosh please don’t tell me the reason Mark lost weight is because he’s genuinely starving (like in the opening number they say that they’re “hungry (and frozen)”)
- Mark is not having any of it. Good for him.
- WAIT MAUREEN IS THE ONE TO SAY THAT HER SAMPLES WONT DELAY SO THAT MEANS THERES NO TANGO MAUREEN NOO
- Now I’ll never know if Mark is from Scarsdale in this version 😔
- OH GOSH NOW I SEE WHY THEY CUT THIS
- This makes Mark slightly unlikeable, immature even
- “How’s it going?” “Not good. I’m depressed” OMG ME TOO BESTIE
- Mark reminds me of this nice guy™️ I used to know
- “Anyway, I treated you like dirt - you’ll get over it!” MA’AM?! HOW CAN YOU BE SO CASUAL ABOUT THIS?
- Oh that’s because her abusive tendencies are normal for her
- Ok I take it back, Mark isn’t a nice guy ™️ he’s just salty and has every right to be. I still don’t like what he said earlier though uGh
- WHEW OK NEVER MIND I MEANT WHAT I SAID EARLIER
- I can’t express how much I hate this, Mark is becoming so unlikeable and Maureen is just being her usual self
- The music is good but the lyrics just make Mark seem awful ugh and that’s fine if that’s what they’re going for but I’m still gonna hate him :)
- TW SEXUAL ASSAULT: MARK PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DON’T TELL ME YOU ACTUALLY GROPED MAUREEN
- Oh gosh that’s so gross of him I truly hate Mark so much
Christmas Bells
- Mark saying “Maureen?” after Roger points out Mimi makes much more sense in this context
- Mark’s “woah!” isn’t nearly as funny as it is in the cast recording: 0/10 /hj
- The transition from the whole follow the man thing to the apology to the man being angry to Roger snapping at him has always been one of my favorite moments and this one did not disappoint
- I can’t decide whether I like the extra lines that the man has or whether I liked that it was cut
- I think I do like it actually
- Joanne is ✨ fed up ✨
- That “to” in “and it’s beginning to” was way too long
- Why does Maureen’s “last night I had this dream” sound so… weird? Almost robotic? Idk
- I was expecting “Joanne which way to the stage” but Joanne seems done with Maureen so it makes sense it’s not here
Over the Moon
- What even is going on in this version?
- TW: GORE/VIOLENCE: “She gauged her eyes out!” OK JUMP SCARE WARNING THIS ISN’T SWEENEY TODD
- NYTW Rent is back to being morbid 🤩
- Maureen is sounding more and more unhinged (which is ironic because I called Benny unhinged earlier and he’s the exact person she’s protesting against)
- Do I hear the music to Jaws?
- The person (Karen Oberlin?) who played Maureen for the first staged reading said that Maureen was supposed to be similar to Laurie Anderson? Which is apparently a stark contrast from the final version of Maureen?
- “The mOOon” MAUREEN WHAT ARE YOU ON
- This music is making my anxiety spike up for no apparent reason
- Never mind it’s the impending doom (that isn’t coming)
- Oh wait nvm I forgot this is a sad musical-
- How are you just going to say “Thank you” and leave after doing whatever the heck that was???
La Vie Boheme Part 1
- The waiter sounds more defeated in this than panicked. Cool.
- Mark’s “what?!” is also more toned down. I miss dramatic, loud Mark
- I was wondering why Anthony’s voice sounded so different all of a sudden and it’s because they had Roger say the “that’s a lie…I had a tea the other day” lines
- Please don’t start singing “do a little business” again
- RIP Blockbuster
- I’ve always loved how Benny’s voice sounds (at least when Taye Diggs, Rodney Hicks, and Jared Bedgood sing it) when he sings “a bright a charming girl like you…a fallacy in your head) but this just missed the mark imo :/
- Benny sounds like he’s trying to hard to be a villain but it’s just not working, he just sounds cuckoo
- “Hey sister, she’s my sister” So is Benny’s father in law not there or..?
- Ok I have never heard this next part (after “carmina burana”) before? And I can barely make out what they’re saying so I’m glad they cut it
- “Starring his former lovers current female lover as himself” w a i t w h a t a m i n o t g e t t i n g
- THEY CHANGED BENNY’S “Your new boyfriend doesn’t know about us” to MARK SAYING “Meet you in the bathroom” UM-
- “Another brother?” “Ex lover” Ok
- I FEEL SO BAD FOR ROGER AFTER HE STRUGGLES TO PLAY HIS SONG - MARK SAYS “Not now Roger” PLEASE 😭
- “I’ve been trying…I’ve got baggage” Roger sounds pretty decent here
La Vie Boheme Part 2
- This starts off so sarcastic too I love it
- “Send back your ghost or else we’ll have to get real jobs” Oop 👀
- Roger says the “Food of love…heavy competition” lines along with Angel
- Maureen sings the “Revolution…making pleas!” lines by herself
- “The opposite of war isn’t peace it’s creation” IM SO GLAD THEY KEPT THE MUSIC GOING AND CHANGED THE WAY THAT LINE WAS DELIVERED IN THE FINAL VERSION
- That ending was… underwhelming
I Should Tell You
- Bruh when is this song gonna start?
- JUST TELL EACH OTHER ALREADY
- “I can’t sleep at night, I’m scared to close my eyes” This is so sad. I know this is a fictional character but geez this girl is a literal teenager and dealing with so much
- “I’m so filled with fright, I rarely share, I criticize” this poor man is so depressed and it’s making me sad
- I really am loving this version, they’re both airing out their flaws before proceeding with a relationship and it’s emotional
- Never mind, what is going on with these lyrics
- I love that the “here goes” at the end made it to the final version
WHEW THAT WAS A LOT.
TIME FOR ACT TWO BESTIES!
Seasons of Love
- Ah yes, Seasons of Love
- This sounds so good-
- Is this slower than the final version?
- They sing “although it’s not the end” instead of “though the story never ends”
- WOAH IS THAT OUT TONIGHT?!
Out Tonight
- IT IS OUT TONIGHT
- It’s crazy how this is in act 2
- “I’ve got an itch - to be a b*tch” LOL
- “I need to laugh like a child” I’m genuinely so confused as to where this lyric came from
- It’s “Valentine’s Day” instead of “Christmas Day” here
- I WAS SO CONFUSED BEFORE REALIZING MAUREEN WAS THE ONE TALKING
- “Forget me not” Why is this man so dramatic 💀 this is giving me last day of school “HAGS!” vibes and I don’t know why-
- “Mark stop crying” I almost feel sorry for him
- “No this is not a phase I’m going through” !!!
- I’m starting to like this Maureen-
- “He loves me - he loves me more” I SWEAR IF ANGEL WAS IN THE BACKGROUND PICKING OFF PETALS DURING THIS I AM GOING TO DIE
Seasons of Love B
- This song placement makes no sense?
- Maybe the final version is faster than this one to show how little time they have left?
Voice Mail #3
- When the phone rang, and I half expected someone to go “Dr. Mendel please”
- “April is the cruelest month” I think February is but ok
- “Anyone but Mark, please leave a message” Who wants to join me on the (Demo) Mark Cohen is canceled train 😍
- Seriously is this man just harassing her with calls everyday? That’s creepy. She’s moved on, and so should he.
Without You
- Maureen is singing “Without You”?!
- I’m sorry but I don’t think it makes much sense for Maureen (and Joanne) to be singing this song. Maureen seemed like she didn’t even care about Joanne so saying things like “But I die without you” doesn’t add up. Unless she means “my toxicity dies without you and I need you in order to fuel my manipulation.”
- It’s very telling that Joanne sings the “Without you… the lungs breathe” part
Voice Mail #4
- “We went to steal an air conditioner” “We’ll be right back!” IM SCREAMING
- “Professor Collins” EW I AM NOT USED TO HEARING HIM CALLED THAT
- “He said he was gonna steal an air conditioner, maybe this isn’t the right number” LOL THIS IS THE SAME MAN WHO LATER REWIRES AN ATM
Contact
- Oh gosh no it’s ✨ contact ✨
- I don’t know how to feel about the first 15 seconds
- Never mind, it’s plain weird
- Angel’s “take me” sounds almost painful :( poor baby is SUFFERING
- “It’s over” Once again, Collins sounds like he’s going to commit a crime
I’ll Cover You Reprise
- TIME FOR S A D
- “Live in my house” I hate that I cringed
- I feel so bad but this Collins is just NOT. IT. The lines that are heavy with emotion (whether it’s grief or joy) always come across as creepy
- He sounds less creepy as the song goes on, so I’ll give him that
Goodbye Love
- I swear if Halloween isn’t in this, I’m going to riot
- “You said that you were leaving town last week” “You said that Benny was the most disgusting yuppie scum of the earth” THESE LYRICS SHEESH
- Maureen says “You said you’d give me some space” instead of “Who said I was talking to you” and this oddly sounds more mature of her than the final version?
- Mark’s “Calm down” and “Everyone please” in the background gives me “Oh no! Anyway” vibes. This man is saying this in the least alarming, non-forceful way ever. HE’S LIVING FOR THE DRAMA
- For a high energy/emotion song, it’s so slow
- “I gave a mile” “When you weren’t trashed” THAT WAS KINDA LOW
- LOL BENNY AND MARK SAYING “Come on guys chill” IN THE ABSOLUTE MOST UNFAZED WAY EVER IS SENDING ME THEY BOTH COULDN’T CARE LESS AND ARE HAPPY TO SEE THIS HAPPEN
- “Don’t give up Joanne?” Excuse me?? You cheated on her and was abusive
- “I live for you” Maureen this is so incredibly manipulative I can’t
- I missed Adam Pascal’s “ALLLLLLLLLLL YOUR WORDS ARE NICE MIMI”
- I’m so so happy they changed “one way street” to “three way street” because it makes more sense (Benny, Roger, heroin) and hits harder
- Wondering why they changed “tonight” into “today”
- Not the “I can’t believe this family must die - Angel helped us believe in love, I can’t believe you disagree” lines missing
- “Some of the best *voice crack* How could she?” MY HEART
- ROGER SOUNDS SO BROKEN OH MY GOSH
- “Use your right brain” LOLOL I SNORTED DO NOT BRING THAT UP IN A SONG LIKE THIS
- Everyone who has been personally victimized by Zombie Roger is entitled to financial compensation
- “I don’t know what I am” THAT LINE HURTS
- OH MY GOSH
- MARK SAYS “Who does” AND ROGER GETS ANNOYED AND SINGS “Oh God Mark, don’t you?!” AND THEN MARK IS THE ONE WHO SAYS THE “Mark has got his work…Mark hides in his work” LINES AND ROGER SAYS “From what?” AND THEN MARK SAYS “From facing my failure… facing the fact that I live a lie” THIS IS SO PERFECT I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS VERSION. I LOVE FINAL VERSION TOO BECAUSE THEY BOTH KINDA CALL EACH OTHER OUT BUT THIS IS JUST *screams*
- “You don't live a lie, tell you why. You never finished your film cause the standards you set for yourself are too high - but the fact remains that you're the one of us with the talent and the drive. The fact remains, Mark, you're the one to survive.” I AM LOSING IT
- THIS IS PERFECTION PLEASE
- I LOVE YOU JONATHAN LARSON
- “I’m afraid the burden’s gonna make me crack.” “If it does, just let me know, I’ll come back” STOP I AM ON THE VERGE OF TEARS-
- “Why’s it easier to return to a friend, than to burn with a lover till the end?” THIS LINE. THIS LINE RIGHT HERE. WHY WHY WHY WAS IT CUT.
- This is (Demo) Mark’s redemption arc oof
- “Mimi still loves Roger, Mimi’s just with Benny because Mimi’s getting weak” I AM BEGGING YOU ALL TO LISTEN TO THIS
- “I’ve gotta go” “Anything you need in Santa Fe?” “I’ll be fine - make your film” “Ok, love you. Call.” *whispers* “Love you too. I hate the fall.” IT IS TAKING EVERYTHING IN ME NOT TO START SOBBING
- I NEED TO SEE ADAM PASCAL AND ANTHONY RAPP SING THIS VERSION PLEASE IF IT’S OUT THERE GIVE ME A LINK
- Roger’s soft “You heard?” 🥺
- I’m just sitting here all sad and then Roger starts softly singing “Right brain, how do I find the right brain? I lost my map” SIR PLEASE STOP THIS IS TAKING ME OUT OF THE MOMENT
- Right brain will never not be funny
- Daphne’s voice sounds so pretty
- “Hello disease” and “They call me Mimi” being on the same note will never not crush my heart. She feels as if her disease has become her and it’s heart breaking.
- I love Mimi and Roger so much. Not necessarily together because the way they’re relationship started was just not it and they have so much work to do but I’m just rooting for them to come out on the other end ok 🥺
Real Estate
- I’m getting villain vibes from this
- Is this another “Do A Little Business”?
- Oh wait never mind it’s Angel’s burial
- I like the music in this
- “I give up” IS HALLOWEEN GOING TO START
- Ugh maybe I’m reading too much into things but the way Benny has talked to Alison this whole time irks me
- OK MUSIC COME THROUGH
- ITS GIVING ✨ QUIRKY VILLAIN ✨
- “I’m all alone” LOL I HATE THAT I LAUGHED I DID NOT EXPECT FOR HIM TO SAY THAT
- Ok I can definitely see why this was cut
- “My friends have flown or are dropping like flies.”
- LOL IM SORRY MARK I CAN’T FEEL BAD FOR YOU FOR BEING IN LOVE WITH MAUREEN AFTER LITERALLY HARASSING HER ABOUT HER SEX LIFE AND TRYING TO GET HER TO COME HAVE SEX WITH YOU-
- “My family’s nuts” I figured, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree /hj
- “I haven’t had sex in a millennium” This man is so dramatic like he could’ve said “*insert number* months” (which at least would’ve rhymed) but no he had to be dramatic
- Mark and Maureen, the drama king and queen 😍
- LOL IM SCREAMING BENNY IS TRYING TO OPEN UP A REAL ESTATE BUSINESS WITH MARK?!
- “Cohen and Coffin” I’m surprised he put Mark’s name first
- ALISON SPEAKS
- She honestly serves no purpose, I can see why she never appears on stage in the final version
- Imagine pouring out your heart and all your friend says is “hAvE yoU cOnSidEreD rEaL eStATe?”
- Ew please don’t mention that man’s name in a musical like this
- “Couldn’t we build low income housing” MARK STOP TRYING TO MAKE ME LIKE YOU
- Benny’s voice reminds me so much of those villainy voices on animated kids shows back in the day. Specifically the Magician from Frosty the Snowman (I barely remember what that man sounds like so please do not ask me to elaborate 💀).
- THIS CHANGE IN MUSIC WHAT IS HAPPENING
- IS ALISON FROM THE COUNTRY? IS THAT WHY THE CALLED HER A DEBUTANTE EARLIER SINCE THOSE THINGS ARE USUALLY IN THE SOUTH?
- “Any idiot can turn on a camera and shoot hobos” Alison, I hate you 😍
- “Last year filthy bum-“ “Person!” “Ok, filthy person.” I’M HONESTLY SO SHOCKED SHE SAID THAT BUT THEN AGAIN BENNY USES THE SAME LANGUAGE SO I SHOULDNT BE SURPRISED
- MARK I’M STARTING TO LIKE YOU MORE AND MORE FOR DOING THE BARE MINIMUM
- I’m doomed forever to be poor” I KEEP FORGETTING THAT MARK ISN’T FROM SCARSDALE IN THIS AND THAT HE’S CUT OFF
- OH MY GOSH WAIT NO I THINK HE IS FROM SCARSDALE IN THIS VERSION BECAUSE BENNY SAYS “Meet you back in Scarsdale”
- MARK YOU ARE FRUSTRATING ME
- “Last year crummy boho goon, next year corporate tycoon” I.HATE.YOU.ALISON.
- MARK ROLLING HIS R 💀
Open Road
- “No you can’t save the world, better save your heart” PAIN
- I think I hear some Another Day undertones
- Roger is really concerning me
- I knows he’s talking about Mimi, but I can’t help but feel like he’s talking about April too
- This song is weirding me out, as I’m worried that he is going to have a breakdown
Voice Mail #5
- I don’t speak Spanish but I feel like the person playing Mimi’s mother definitely doesn’t either 💀
- Hm Roger’s moving to Brooklyn? That’s interesting, I wonder why he just didn’t go back to Manhattan (but the memories are too painful and he needs a fresh start)
- Is this… the Twilight Zone?
Finale A
- THE MUSIC TO SPLATTER IS PLAYING AGAIN I CAN ALREADY TELL THIS IS GOING TO BE GOOD
- TW SUICIDAL THOUGHTS: SO WE STARTED THE MUSICAL WITH SUICIDAL THOUGHTS AND NOW WE’RE ENDING IT WITH SUICIDAL THOUGHTS. Great.
- They literally sound dead when singing “How we gonna pay”
- “Salutations” sounds out of character
- Creepy Collins is back at it again
- Benny demanding things from Alison (to the tune of Do A Little Business?) and then immediately singing “We are the world, we are the children” and then going back to singing to the tune of Do A Little Business tops every other unhinged thing he’s done /hj
- “No more fiction, this is an eviction” BABWHSHWHSNISKW
- OH MY GOSH I HATE BENNY I HATE BENNY I HATE BENNY SO MUCH
- YES ROGER TELL ALISON THE TRUTH
- “Markkkk!” OH NO MY HEART DROPPED NO
- It sounds like Roger is saying “Gooooo!” instead of the usual “Nooooo!”
- Oh no the Halloween music :(
- ROGERS “Over here, Oh God” WAS SO SOFT
- THIS POOR BOY
- “Collins will get you a doctor, honey” IM ABOUT TO CRY FR
- COLLINS COUNTING HIS MONEY AND ONLY HAVING $16 - THIS LUMP IN MY THROAT IS GETTING BIGGER
- “Wait, I’ll sell the camera” MY JAW DROPPED
- MY EYES ARE WATERY
- I’m so confused by Collins’ lyrics in this
- “I finished the film” “That’s great” MAUREEN IS NOT HAVING IT AND HONESTLY SHE SHOULDN’T BECAUSE ??? A 20 YEAR OLD WOMAN IS DYING - NO ONE CARES ABOUT YOUR FILM I UNDERSTAND YOU MIGHT BE TRYING TO GET YOUR MIND OFF THINGS BUT THIS IS NOT IT
- “It’s called, Today 4 U: Proof Positive” Mark sweetie stop trying she doesn’t care
- Mark and Maureen praying/pleading for Mimi to live-
- Mimi’s panicked “Don’t go!”
- They both say “I love you” at the same time 🥺
- Them singing “I Should Tell You” again is really sweet
- Ok so apparently Collins was singing to his coat (I guess because he was going to give it to Mimi?) so his lyrics make sense now
- Rogers’ voice getting louder when he sings “Who goes there” makes me think he’s screaming this at death, like he wants it to leave the people he loves alone
- I really love how this version doesn’t include Your Eyes, it’s just a short instrumental bit of it. It’s more impactful imo
Finale B
- “Moonstruck! The theme from moonstruck! Mooooooooooon!” W h a t
- Maureen says “She’s drenched” and Mark sings “Her fever’s breaking” I’m kinda confused as to why they changed it in the final version to Collins and Maureen
- “No day but today” *chefs kiss*
OK I’M DONE LISTENING AND THAT WAS A ROLLERCOASTER. Anyways, “The Right Brain” unfortunately lives rent free in my head now 😔 send help

Update: Semi-Serious Opinion on How I Feel About Tony Award-Winning Musicals
Best Musical:
Hadestown (2019): I still love this musical, and I actually get to see it for my birthday! I really like the music more than anything, because I'm a sucker for beautiful harmonies, and I also love how they tell the story.
Hamilton (2016): Low-key the very first musical I ever got into. It's always been a favorite (even though it is also overplayed) and I love both the ethnic diversity in the cast, the music, and the storytelling. It's everything a musical should aspire to be.
Hairspray (2003): In my opinion, Hairspray is a celebration of life in general. There is so much diversity in this musical and I love it. Even though if I auditioned for this musical I'd probably get cast as Penny or Amber, I wouldn't be mad because I love this musical that much.
Best Musical Revival:
Chicago (1997): Chicago is absolutely magnificent. I love every single song in this musical, and that isn't something I can say for even some of my favorite musicals.
Best Original Score:
Fiddler on the Roof (1965): Okay, this musical got 8 Tony Awards in 1965 and for good reason too. They got Best Musical, Best Producer, Best Leading Actor, Best Featured Actress, Best Director, Best Author, Best Choreography, and Best Costume Design. It is that good.
Sweeney Todd (1979): This is actually a very good horror musical. It sticks very well to the source material (the book), and the movie adaptation is phenomenal despite the minimal singing experience of the main cast. This musical is very very good.
Best Choreography:
Bye Bye Birdie (1961): It had Dick Van Dyke in the lead role, are you really that surprised? I was actually in this musical in middle school, I was in a barbershop quartet (despite me being a girl). It is a really good musical, and I'm proud to say I was a part of it.
Newsies (2012): Again...are you surprised. Newsies has a very special place in my heart, because I just love everything about it from the set design to the dancing, to the amazing dialogue, to the costume design, and especially the music. Definitely the music.
Best Scenic Design:
The Sound of Music (1960): This musical also has a special place in my heart for one reason alone, the music. Maria has been played by a lot of wonderful actresses, but my favorites are Mary Martin and Julie Andrews. I just love everything about this musical, but its music has a very special place in my heart.
Spongebob Squarepants (2018): Okay, but hear me out...it's a good musical. I grew up when Spongebob was in its prime, and the musical brought me back to when I was younger and I would sit in front of the TV after school and watch Spongebob. This musical has so many great character moments and they do such a great job on the set design in particular.
Best Costume Design:
Shrek The Musical (2009): They're not wrong. Shrek's costume design is that good. I really like this musical anyway, but the costuming is phenomenal.
Best Leading Actor:
The Phantom of the Opera (1988): Andrew Lloyd Webber is a genius...nuff said. Also, Michael Crawford is a God.
Hairspray (2003)...again: This goes out to more the actor in particular that won this award, Harvey Fierstein. He won this award for playing Edna Turnblad, and he absolutely killed it.
Best Leading Actress:
Peter Pan (1955): This is my love letter to Mary Martin who played Peter Pan, and also got the same award for playing Maria in The Sound of Music. Mary Martin is the woman that made me want to go into musical theatre, on top of that she grew up where I grew up, and now I am working hard to become like her one day.
Wicked (2003): I know it didn't win best musical the year it was put on Broadway, but I need to talk about it. This summer I saw it live and it was an experience I will never forget. It is truly an astounding musical even just listening to the soundtrack, and seeing it live gives it a depth that you couldn't imagine. Also Idina Menzel is a goddess, and she is also part of the reason I want to go into musical theatre.

no one asked but here you go
jatp characters and their taste in musicals
julie loves anything an everything. a particular favourite is ‘in the heights’ and yes she cries to alabanza every. single. time. she also just loves the atmosphere of live theatre and the hum of music waiting to be heard. whenever she has the opportunity, she’ll be at the theatre. even if it’s just some ten year olds running around in fish costumes and calling it the little mermaid. julie knows all the shows so if you’re ever looking to find new stuff, she’s your gal. she’s the one that introduced alex to bare, willie to starry and reggie to [title of show]. she also knows the encyclopaedia of musical theatre songs that aren’t actually in shows (see: jonathan reid gealt, michael mott, kerrigan and lowdermilk etc)
luke can’t sit still for the life of him. he tries to because he doesn’t want to be rude but it’s not really his scene and he loses concentration. for this reason, he’s really into his movie musicals. he used to watch grease and the sound of music with his mom. rocketman and we will rock you are his modern day favourites. (he’s also got julie’s second hand excitement for the in the heights movie)
alex (dare i say it) loves dear evan hansen. he knows it’s slightly problematic but who are we kidding, it’s so much more progressive than peoples view of anxiety back in his day. he ugly cries at i’ll cover you reprise in RENT. he’s also a sucker for shows like dreamgirls, six, & juliet etc. and bare. for obvious reasons
reggie has two very opposing tastes. the first is as ‘rock’ as you can get while still being musical theatre (ie. bat out of hell) and the second is he absolute masterpiece that is annie. just - there’s a dog and a loving family so he’s sold
bobby likes newsies purely for the dance routines. athlete bobby lives in my head rent free. he spends his days rewatching the movie so that they can get all the moves right. they nail them all. bobby also likes other dancey shows and also little shop of horrors for some reason (the stage version where the plant is literally about to eat everyone in the theatre)
carrie likes mean girls. it was a casual liking until flynn decided they hate it and so now carrie plays it at every opportunity just to annoy them. also the idea of carrie singing someone gets hurt does things to my head
flynn likes ‘dark’ musicals like heathers and beetlejuice and carrie (the musical not the girl but yes her too). they’re very frustrated when riverdale ruins them but also uses the gif of archie dad-dancing in ‘the world according to chris’ as a reaction whenever they’re planning something exciting just because everyone hates it
willie likes jukebox musicals because the usually have really wacky plots to make it work. (alex and willie listening to & juliet) jagged little pill is a frequent favourite but they’re still mad that jo isn’t non-binary like in the workshop version
nick likes mamma mia (and cats) and that’s it
caleb is obviously into big flashy musicals like 42nd street and a chorus line. and also cabaret? i get that vibe. also throw in some obscure stuff like natasha pierre and the great comet of 1812. i just thing he’d like that
ray likes disney musicals - movies or on stage. they’re just wholesome and perfect and remind him of when the kids were little

THESE ARE A LOT OF QUESTIONS I APOLOGIZE but i’ve been on a musical binge lately— which song(s) from popular musicals do you associate with chrysi and her bfs. or alternatively, what musicals do you think they would like/dislike
((btw, i made a spotify playlist for all the songs i mentioned for each ship because you chose the perfect question to make me go feral and make. many playlists. in order: chrysijacks, chryzure, chrysigil))
this got long, so it’s under a read more. the playlists may include more songs than i mentioned, simply due to me thinking Thoughts while making them.
songs i associate with ships: chrysijacks
since this blog is currently chrysijacks moulin rouge themed ( :> ), from moulin rouge, the songs come what may, el tango de roxanne, and the show must go on make me think of them! just overwhelmingly dramatic and painful and fun :> :>
lately i’ve been rlly rlly obsessing over a newsies chrysijacks au for no discernible reason, so from that musical (but the movie version, because i’ve got bad taste <//3 i mean this very seriously), i’ve been thinking about drama to santa fe and once and for all. just… chrysi trying to escape to another place and jacks being a selfish bastard that doesn’t want her to leave… yeah :) also king of new york is them half-flirting, half-ignoring it all while jacks is trying to deny the fact that he wants chrysi to stay with him so bad.
addams family makes me think of chrysijacks as gomez + morticia to emery + her bf’s wednesday and lucas, so the songs that make me think of chrysijacks are crazier than you (… immediately gives a wednesday/lucas song after saying they were gomez/morticia 😔😔😔 they’re gomez and morticia in the sense that jacks is screaming, crying, etc. the MOMENT chrysi’s like “not today”. he’s totally that one line in morticia where he’s like “i’ll end my life” after chrysi doesn’t kiss him one (1) time), and also tango de amor because jacks is canonically a good dancer 😌✨
from the scarlet pimpernel, into the fire, when i look at you, the riddle, only love, the duel—JUST LIKE. OKAY. I HAVE A VERY SPECIFIC SCARLET PIMPERNEL CHRYSIJACKS AU THAT’S FUNNY BECAUSE JACKS THINKS HE’S BEEN PLAYING CHRYSI THE ENTIRE TIME (with an increasing feeling of guilt, since he’s slowly been growing feelings for her) BUT TURNS OUT SHE’S HIS FUCKING BOSS AND HAS BEEN THIS ENTIRE TIME 💀
dr. horrible’s sing-along blog,,, thinking of chrysijacks SO HARD every time i listen to it. i’m making an au btw, but it’s more for fun thinking than actually doing anything with it. ANYWAY, the songs slipping, everything you ever, and horrible credits—MAKING ME THINK VERY HARD ABT JACKS ACCIDENTALLY KILLING CHRYSI IN AN ATTEMPT TO GET EVERYTHING HE WANTED… EXCEPT NOW HE DOESN’T HAVE WHAT  HE NEEDS :(((( yeah….
@fillyreports recommended this song, but green green dress is PEAK chrysijacks, grown in a lab all for me! also sibella is chrysijacks, also recommended by filly!
from anything goes: it’s de-lovely, anything goes, and all through the night!
hadestown, but as a hades/persephone chrysijacks au: chant, chant ii, epic iii
someone in the crowd from la la land, jst because of au reasons.
anastasia: in my dreams, once upon a december, quartet at the ballet, everything to win
okay, hear me out—greatest showman has many good chrysijacks songs, but mainly rewrite the stars. yes, i’m unapologetically going to talk about my newsies/greatest showman/prestige franken-au. this is a them song.
songs i associate with ships: chryzure
OH MY GOSH, PARADE, PARADE, PARADE… the songs do it alone, this is not over yet, and all the wasted time is very chryzure. very very.
you are my home from the scarlet pimpernel makes me want to cry because. them. chrysi and azure. lovers. SIGHS.
from 1776, he plays the violin… hmmmmm. yep! yep yep yep!
literally cannot and will not explain this one, but extraordinary girl from the american idiot musical. chrysi and azure. don’t look at me.
from carousel, i think of the carousel waltz!! and from my fair lady, the embassy waltz.
*clenches fist* CAN’T FORGET DUST AND ASHES FROM NATASHA, PIERRE, AND THE GREAT COMET OF 1812, as well as no one else.
now hadestown… alright, alright (depressing chryzure au, which i’m VERY happy abt for my bday): wait for me, epic iii, way down hadestown ii, chant ii, wait for me ii, doubt comes in,,,, heart been broken so many times, i sob—anyway, i like the original recording in general, but yeah!!!
johanna from sweeney todd
IF I CAN’T LOVE HER FROM BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, ALONG WITH HOME… HIIIIIII. anything batb is chryzure, actually.
songs i associate with ships: chrysigil
weirdly, i think of madame guillotine when i think of them, from the scarlet pimpernel musical! since chrysi uses basically a scythe, i can see her killing ppl with it :))) and vivez!!! storybook as well!
this isn’t specifically a chrysigil song, but the song momma look sharp from 1776 makes me think of gil. like… yah :)
I GET A KICK OUT OF YOU IS CHRYSIGIL. SHE’S FALLING IN LOVE WITH THE MOST CRINGEFAIL, BORINGEST MAN IN THE WORLD, AND YOU BET SHE’S IN LOVE W/ HIM!!!!
pretty lies from the count of monte cristo is chrysigil! sobs…
what would i do if i could feel? from the wiz gives me gil vibes for some reason and i’m unsure why! but anyway. also you can’t win, but that’s because gil seems somewhat pessimistic.
*clenches fist* okay, TOP chrysigil song is raining from the rocky musical. don’t look me in the eye. it’s chrysi singing about gil, barring the “sad brown eyes” line. imagine she says gold. it’s about gil.
OH MY GODDD, OKAY, THE MUSICAL AMÉLIE.. times are hard for dreamers, stay, and where do we go from here are all on my main chrysigil playlist, actually. it fits them.
from venice: if only and willow and. tbh. wings. why not. those songs work. GOD, ACTUALLY—IMAGINE A CHRYSIGIL VENICE AU WHERE GIL ACCIDENTALLY KILLS CHRYSI 😭😭😭 i want to hurt him.
charas’ fav musicals (bcs i don’t think any of them have a Hated Musical, besides chrysi, but i personally don’t Despise any musicals, so i won’t say anything)
chrysi: the addams family, phantom of the opera, wicked, parade… pretty much any musical she’s taken part in or seen. she’s a theatre kid (affectionate).
azure: phantom of the opera, sweeney todd, hadestown, les misérables (*points* french)
jacks: also wicked, moulin rouge, maybe little shop of horrors? perhaps.
gil: he’s just happy to be included in an interest of chrysi’s. he doesn’t care.
archibald: i don’t have any musical songs i associate with him, but i feel like he’d be like chrysi—any musical he’s seen, he loves. hate him. theatre kid (derogatory).

Fearless (Taylor’s Version) as Newsies
Fearless: Romeo. Yes I know you think he’d be love story but he’s such a hopeless romantic I can guarantee he lives for the whole ‘take my hand and drag me head first fearless’. Plus he’s a pretty timid guy, so him being fearless is just *chefs kiss*
Fifteen: Davey. I feel like he’s made some bad choices which is why he’s so careful. He definitely lives by ‘I found time can heal most anything’
Love Story: Race, the dramatic little f*cker, lives for Love Story. Don’t act like he won’t speed down a freeway screaming at the top of his lungs while whoever is in the passenger seat (usually Albert) looks at him with great concern.
Hey Stephen: Les. He probably has written poetry for some girl in his class. Plus it’s such a wholesome song, I’m just imagining his little voice in the back seat of the car singing ‘I CANT HELP IT IF YA LOOK LIKE AN ANGEL, CANT HELP IT IF I WANNA KISS YA IN THE RAIN SO COME FEEL THIS MAGIC IVE BEEN FEELING SINCE I MET YOU’ and then Davey (who’s driving, he doesn’t trust anyone else to give Les lifts unless it’s Jack or Sarah) Just turns it up so he doesn’t have to hear Les’s screeching
White Horse: oh boy time to ✨cry✨ and you know who relates to this song? Albert. Not sure why, he has a lot of feelings so for him a song about pure hurt is up his ally. He loves all the lyrics and ‘I’m gonna find someone some day who might ACTUALLY TREAT ME WELL’ he screams a little too passionately and then race is there like ‘am I a joke to you 👁👄👁’
You Belong With Me: Crutchie lives for this song. It’s so fun and he loves humming it and he just- he loves a good classic. He definitely has a Junior Jewels shirt that he got all the newsies to sign. It’s his favourite pyjama shirt.
Breathe: Elmer. Probably cause he has nine siblings and he had to leave them, he was hella close to them so now he’s alone... I’m fine
Tell Me Why: Henry. ‘CAUSE YOURE THE ONLY THING ON MYYYYY MIND’ he does that and points his finger dramatically. I have this weird head canon that he takes SO LONG in the bathroom so he sings into his shampoo bottle and looks in the mirror... yeah it’s a lot.
You’re Not Sorry: Specs. It slaps. So does Specs. In conclusion: yes.
The Way I Loved You: Jack. Now The Way I Loved You is about two people. The one they’re currently with, and the ex. So for him I feel like he’s not really sure what his feelings are doing, so he misses his ex while he’s with his current partner... yikes. Someone get the boy some therapy he needs it.
Forever and Always: Spot. He’s angry. He’s going feral. ‘OhhhHHHHH AND IT RAINS IN YOUR BEDROOM EVERYTHING IS WRONG, IT RAINS WHEN YOURE HERE AND IT RAINS WHEN YOURE GONE’ yeah he’s really into it... like he’s popping off. Specifically that part where Taylor is full on P I S S E D and that high note comes up.
The Best Day: *don’t touch me I’m crying* Katherine (pt 1, yeah she has two songs stfu like you didn’t see that coming) k so she loves the best day cause she ✨lost her mother✨ when she was 14 so uhhh, she just likes it cause it reminds her of her... which is sad... oh fearless OG came out when her mum was around as well, so when she lost her she probably played The Best Day to cope.
Change: oh all of them I mean have you HEARD it??? ‘It was the night things changed, I can feel it now, all the walls that they put up to hold us back will fall down itS A REVOLUTIONNNNNNNN SO THROW YOUR HANDS UP CAUSE WE NEVER GAVEEEEE INNNNNNNnnnNn *inhales* AND WELL SING HALLELU-‘ yeah it slaps.
Jump Then Fall: SARAH JACOBS!!! It’s so soft and I can BET she kinda sits there quietly watching her SO and then is like ‘holy shit- fuck their laugh- oh my god’ and has moments where she’s like ‘my gosh I love them’ and she’s so comforting and warm. So the whole line ‘I’ll hold you through the night until you smile...’ cause she knows that she wants to fall in love so bad but she’s also like ‘please don’t be afraid to fall please just love me holy shit I love you’
Come In With The Rain: gosh idk they all scream the chorus at the top of their lungs (there are so many tracks on this album I’m just going to have to skip songs where I can’t think of anyone 🧍‍♀️
There’s also probably gonna be a few repeats
Superstar: Pulitzer thinking about Teddy Roosevelt 😏
Today Was A Fairytale: Albert, he deserves a happy song. After a happy date he dances around the room singing it, until someone knocks on the door and he’s like ‘shit they heard me’
Mr Perfectly Fine: ohhhhhhhHHHH KATHERINE MY QUEEN. She’s p i s s e d. She’s m a d. She’s p a s s i o n a t e. She’s also still with Jack at the time so he’s like ‘wtf’ scared for his life- then he uhhhh breaks up with her... cause of valid reasons and is ok but still broken and that takes her love for the song to a whole new level cause she always got it but never got it. Not she’s on the verge of smashing a vase as she screams it.
We Were Happy: ✨newsbians✨ just for the line ‘talking bout your daddys farm we were gonna buy some day’. Idk if I ever like- posted about it but Chandler @tarantulas4davey and I had a wholeeee thing for cottage core Kath and Sarah so yk
Don’t You: Jack. He’s a mess. Wbk.
Bye Bye Baby: Race. he just wants to live that main character life cause he’s dramatic so... ‘it wasn’t just like a movie, the rain didn’t soak through my clothes, down to my skin’ honestly same. What a mood.
Love story Remix: THEYRE ALL VIBING
Anyway, in conclusion: yeehaw.
Stream Fearless Taylors Version. Please send in asks asking to elaboration or something if you want to :)

When I Was Your Man || A Ralbert One Shot
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
a/n - hello! so basically this one shot is a College Newsies AU where Racetrack and Albert broke up and Race started dating Spot :'). it's about ralbert though?? so it's like- okay its from alberts POV and it's based on When I Was Your Man so yeah :D (all lyrics from the song will be in bold and italicized),, i'll only be writing the chorus once <3
also i didnt edit this cuz its late and IM TIRED SO sorry if it sucks lol
tw('s) - cussing
same bed but it feels just a little bit bigger now
Albert didn't sleep well at night, if he even slept at all. His bed was empty. The same bed that he had slept in since the beginning of college. But it wasn't his bed, it was their bed. At least, it used to be theirs. Now, it was just his, but he couldn't accept that it was only his.
But at one point, it was theirs. Him and Racetrack, it was once their bed. Even if it was only his, Albert could swear that Race's body was still outlined in the cushion of his bed.
The bed used to be so small, too small for the two of them. They cuddled together to keep each other from falling off. But now it was huge. He had no-one to roll over to in the morning, he was alone.
He couldn't even sleep on the right side of the bed. That was Race's side. Even if Race hadn't slept on the bed for a long time, even if he would never sleep on the bed again. That was his side, not Alberts.
And often times he would lay awake in bed, staring at the ceiling. He would reach over to the right for his boyfriends- ex-boyfriends hand. But it wasn't there. He reached over and was met with sheets and pillows.
So he didn't sleep, because he had no-one to sleep with and his bed was too big to sleep in. And he stayed awake until the next morning when he got into his car and drove from his apartment to the school.
Not even in his car did he get peace. It wasn't his car, it was Race's car. Race had picked it out, he liked the color. And it smelled like Race's cologne and it held memories of Race in each dent of the leather seats.
So he sold the car. He got a new car, his own car. But even with the smell of Race gone, with his memories in the seats gone. The radio in the new car betrayed Albert.
our song on the radio but it don't sound the same
The car radio had one station, and Albert could swear that the station only had one playlist they played each day. Because every day, and it never missed one day, it would play their song. The song they first danced to. So Albert turned off the radio, and he never turned it on. Even when friends begged him to play music, the radio staid off and he played music from his quiet phone.
Every day, Albert showed up to school exhausted. He nearly passed out in class. Lunch was the only time he ever slept. Everyone assumed he didn't get sleep due to his hard classes, which couldn't be farther from the truth. He didn't do his work. He couldn't pay attention in class, not with Race there.
when our friends talk about you, all it does is just tear me down
"You really lucked out being with him, Al," Jack said.
Romeo agreed and added onto the comment, "Kelly's right. He's gorgeous. And a genius too. Too smart for his own good."
Albert raised his head from his arms with a desperately sad look. He sighed and shook his head, "I told you guys. I know we broke up a while ago, but it still hurts, okay?" He rested his head back into his arms and closed his eyes tightly. His heart ached with every comment. He knew Race was gorgeous. He knew Race was a genius. He knew so much about him, yet he didn't know him enough to keep him happy.
"Sorry, man. Forgot," Jack mumbled. Romeo muttered something of an apology and scratched at his neck.
"I know you hate school activities," Romeo started, "But you should come to the party tonight. Dance a little, I think it'll cheer you up."
Albert sighed and tried not to think about why dancing would be hard for him. He looked up and pushed his hair out of his face, "I'll come."
'cause my heart breaks a little when i hear your name
"Race!" Spot called from the couch. The music boomed and Spots voice was quiet, but Albert heard the name anyways. He immediately turned to the boy.
Spot grinned as Race made his way over to him. Race plopped into his lap and smiled back as he hugged the boy. Alberts eyes widened and his chest ached.
Even just hearing Race's name hurt Albert, brought back a wave of memories. Each yell of Race's name when he did something dumb, each fond laugh of the name when he complimented him, each whine of Racetrack's name when he bugged Albert too much. He missed it all.
it all just sounds like ooh, ooh, hoo
Jack and Romeo were definitely talking to Albert, but he couldn't hear anything they were saying. The music sounded like gibberish and he couldn't think. All he could do was stare at the couple on the couch and ache at the sight.
mm, too young, too dumb to realize, that i should have bought you flowers
Albert watched as Race giggled at the flower Spot offered him. Spot smiled and put the small yellow flower behind Race's ear. The stem stuck between his ear and his head whilst the bud pointed outwards.
The years that they dated, Albert and Race were young and naive. He didn't know how to be romantic or how to make Race happy. No matter how hard he tried.
"I should've bought him flowers," He sighed. Jack and Romeo shared a knowing glance before pushing Albert to sit down on the couch.
and held your hand
"I mean," Albert continued, "I was too insecure to do anything with him." They didn't even hold hands in public, because Albert was scared. Scared of what society would think.
should have gave you all my hours, when i had the chance
Albert and Race had started dating their first year of college. Albert was constantly busy with classes. He was always doing work and stressing about class.
Anytime Race would make an attempt to spend time with him, he shut it down.
"I'm doing work," He would say, "You should be doing work, too."
He wanted to do well, get a good job, find a good home, start a family. But all of that was dumb. It was pointless. To hell with it all if we didn't get to come back from his job to see Race. Because Race was his home and he didn't want to start a family with anyone else.
take you to every party 'cause all you wanted to do was dance
"Al!" Race would whine and grab at his arm, "Dance with me, please. Just for a little bit."
Albert never did dance with him. No matter how much he asked, he refused to do so. He couldn't, he needed to get good grades. He needed to provide.
"We can dance later," He would say.
The usual response he would get was, "Promise?" But one day, he received a different answer, "There isn't going to be a later. Not for us, Albert."
now my baby's dancing, but he's dancing with another man
Race pulled Spot up from the couch. They smiled as they moved together to the middle of the room. The music vibrated around them as the two danced.
Albert watched from the camp as he shook his leg. He took in a deep and quaking breath before stumbling out of the house. He threw his cup to the side and gulped in a large breath.
my pride, my ego, my needs, and my selfish ways, caused a good strong man like you to walk out my life
"What do you mean their won't be a later for us, Racer?" Albert had asked, finally looking up from his studies.
Race had scoffed, "Oh, of course! That's what gets you to look me in the eye, huh?" He had rolled his eyes, "We're done, Al. I can't do this anymore, can't do us. Okay? You're so god damn selfish. You only do what's best for you. Ever think about what's best for us, huh? Do you ever even think about me?"
"Of course I think about you, Race. You're all I ever think about," Al had stuttered out.
"Sure," Race had laughed sourly, "I just wanted to fucking dance, Albert. You wouldn't even do that with me. I'm leaving." With that, Race had grabbed all of his stuff and walked out of the apartment.
now i never, never get to clean up the mess i made, oh. and that haunts me every time i close my eyes
Albert closed his eyes when he left the house. Their breakup flashed behind his eyelids and he choked out a sob. He fell to his knees on the grass.
"God damnit," He weakly hit the grass beneath him, "I could've fixed it. I could- Could've. But- Spot. I can't fix it anymore."
although it hurts, i'll be the first to say that i was wrong
He shook his head, "Race was right. I never thought about him." And his stomach twisted with that realization.
Albert has thought he was thinking about Race, about their future together. But it was never about Race, it was about him. He needed to good grades, Racer didn't. Everything that happened was his fault, and he knew that.
oh, i know i'm probably much too late, to try and apologize for my mistakes
He took a deep breath before falling back to sit down on the grass. The door opened and a boy with curly blonde hair sat down next to him.
Race gave Albert a sad smile.
"I'm not going to say sorry," Albert started, "Because that won't make up for anything. I was wrong, about everything." Race nodded.
"Al," Race said quietly.
Albert shook his head with a small grin, "Don't. Go get, Spot. Be happy. Go love the boy who you want to see when you get home from long work days, okay? Love him the way I love you." He paused, "Not the way I treated you, but the way I feel about you. I know it didn't seem like it. But I love you."
Race smiled and gave Albert a pat on the cheek, "I loved you too."
That was the sad tragedy of their relationship.
Albert was in love with Race. Race had been in love with Albert.
They loved each other at different times. But Albert could accept the pain of being in love with a boy would didn't love him back, because even though Race was in love with someone else, he was happy. And that's all Albert wanted, because Race deserved to be happy.

Me Playlist
We're in a break in my class, so here I go. I did this on my instagram yesterday but figured I could do it here too, so, this playlist here has songs that I consider can define me as a person.
They're also very good songs *laughs*
Maybe someone out there will find some songs they like
Tumblr media
1- Santa Fe from Newsies (Jeremy Jordan's version is my favourite)
Santa Fe, my old friend. I can't spend my whole life dreaming. Though I know thats all I seem inclined to do. I ain't getting any younger. And I wanna start brand new. I need space. And fresh air. Let them laugh in my face. I don't care. Save my place. I'll be there.
2- Mercury by Sleeping at Last
I know the further I go The harder I try, only keeps my eyes closed And somehow I've fallen in love With this middle ground at the cost of my soul
3- Neptune by Sleeping at Last
Stitch by stitch I tear apart If brokenness is a form of artI must be a poster child prodigy Thread by thread I come apart If brokenness is a work of artSurely this must be my masterpiece I'm only honest when it rains If I time it right, the thunder breaks When I open my mouth
4- Eight by Sleeping at Last
I'ma shake the ground with all my might And I will pull my whole heart up to the surface For the innocent, for the vulnerable And I'll show up on the front lines with a purposeAnd I'll give all I have, I'll give my blood, give my sweat An ocean of tears will spill for what is broken I'm shattered porcelain, glued back together again Invincible like I've never been
5- Excepcional by Ancud
Translation:
And I don´t promise to be exceptional
There are things that slip past me, you see?
I may stumble, but I swear I'll never fall.
And if there's something I think of at two or three
It's how lucky I have been this time,
I don't want to forget, but I want to move froward already
6- C´mon by Panic! at the disco
But I am ten feet tall I've never felt this tall since the fall Nobody seems to know my name So don't leave me and sleep all alone Maybe stay lost on our way homeC'mon, c'mon, with everything falling down around me I'd like to believe in all the possibilities
7- Goodbye by Bo Burnham
I swear to God that all I've ever wanted was A little bit of everything, all of the time A bit of everything, all of the time Apathy's a tragedy, and boredom is a crime I'm finished playing, and I'm staying inside
8- Car Radio by Twenty One Pilots
I ponder of something terrifying 'Cause this time there's no sound to hide behind I find over the course of our human existence One thing consists of consistence And it's that we're all battling fear Oh dear, I don't know if we know why we're here Oh my, too deep, please stop thinking I liked it better when my car had sound
9- This is me trying by Taylor Swift
I just wanted you to know That this is me tryingThey told me all of my cages were mental So I got wasted like all my potential And my words shoot to kill when I'm mad I have a lot of regrets about that
10- Keep Your Head Up by Ben Howard
Yeah the sun was so hot upon my side Oh lookin' out, at this happiness I searched for it between the sheets Oh feelin' blind, and realizedAll I was searchin' for was me Oh oh, all I was searchin' for was me
I promise I'm usually a happy human being, even if this playlist doesn't make it look like that.
Such chaos.

Reasons why Newsies is the perfect musical:
Tap-dancing newsboys jumping around and doing stunts.
"Watch me stand, watch me run" in Santa Fe (Prologue) is absolutely heartbreaking (because Crutchie gets so caught up in the fantasy that he's imagining himself being able to walk normally, and then he comes back down to earth and realizes that's never going to happen) and I love it. Makes me cry every time. Amazing, 10/10.
Crutchie and Davey are best bois and we must protect at all costs.
SPOT. CONLON. MY KING. I just wish they'd given him a larger role like they did in the movie.
Prime example of trauma making people funny. Exhibit A: every single newsie (especially Race) sans Davey and Les, who actually have a decent home life. (This is why Davey is not very funny. He is still best boi, just not funny.)
Crutchie is so pure and precious and I love him
Lots of big ensemble numbers (so you don't have to cut anyone).
C r u t c h i e
So much quotability! Like every other line is completely iconic, from "Hey, that's my cigar!" to "Newsies forever, second to none!"
Race is amazing. End of story.
Did I mention Crutchie yet? This precious sunshine child deserves the world.
Gayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy. So much gay.
"Dear Jack, greetings from the Refuge..."
Santa Fe hits home in a way I cannot describe and I both love and hate the feeling.
Jeremy Jordan.
Altos can actually sing 99% of the songs (except Katherine's parts) because this musical was specifically written for lower vocal ranges.
So much minor background stuff that is hilarious once you notice it (like Crutchie full-on playing dead to get out of going to Brooklyn right after The World Will Know).
"But the food ain't so bad least so far, cause so far they ain't brung us no food. Ha. Ha."
All the minor background characters that need love and appreciation.
"And I've got a date!"
Once and For All, The World Will Know and Seize the Day are all songs that makes you want to overthrow the capitalist government and rewrite the laws to make everything fair and give everyone basic human rights.

was lowkey waiting for someone to ask me about tswift songs i associate with race bcs i’ve got a lot but no one did :’) looks like i got to take matters to my own hands then. Let’s go !!
ME! ‘I promise that you’ll never find another like me’ I feel like if asked what Race is like most people will say that he’s ‘one of a kind’ or like he’s ‘the best person they’ve ever met’. He cares and loves in his own very unique way. But also him being him in general is already just something to love (though he still have problems with that which I will get to with the other songs) There are other lyrics that I think correlates with his personality actually like ‘I know that I’m a handful baby, uh’. Before anyone goes out to on me I know turning him into a dumbass is a bit... ehh and this lyric plays it out like that too. But I don’t actually think his only personality is just that, aight? I got more songs on this list.
Illicit Affairs. ‘Look at this godforsaken mess that you made me’ and ‘And you know damn well, for you I would ruin myself’. Race is easy to love and care bcs he has a big heart. But oh damn, sometimes he finds himself caring or loving a bit too much for the wrong ppl. He knows better not to offer everyone his big heart that easily but sometimes he can’t help it. He loves the idea of loving and being loved back. Unfortunately, there are many times where he finds himself not being loved back and it really messes him up yknow.
New Romantics. ‘Heartbreak is our national anthem, we sing it proudly’ and ‘we’re too busy dancing, to get knocked off our feet’. Now this one is because of KONY. The song basically goes on abt the simple things those newsies want in life which can be heartbreaking bcs it’s just so simple to get for most ppl but those kids see it as a luxury. Race is the first one to embrace their unfortunate situation as something ‘happy’ bcs he can see the bright side of things if he wants to. Oh and he cares for his friends like I said. He’d get them to dance around these small simple things about their lives till they feel alright again and untouchable. These heartbreaking things is sometimes the only thing he can hang onto when things are confusing like that time around KONY. And besides he can’t just let his friends sit around hurting and sulking like that.
Enchanted. The whole song basically. Because he is in fact very charming. Knows the right words to get ppl to fall into his arms pretty easily. And basically ppl will say it’s ‘very enchanting to meet him’. He’s smooth with the way he talks and acts. He pulls the right strings on ppl and takes special pride to it that he is very likeable to people. And honestly? I dare to say he’s very much sweet. Proper and polite when you first meet him. Once he gets to know you better, he will play the right strings to cheer you up or to get you to fall helplessly in love with him all over again.
Death By A Thousand Cuts. ‘My heart, my hips, my body, my love Trying to find a part of me that you didn't touch’ and also ‘Gave you too much but it wasn't enough. But I'll be all right, it's just a thousand cuts’ again reinforcing the idea that when Race loves he really loves and let people move his feelings so much that when it’s the wrong ppl he gets incredibly hurt. But that second lyric I focused on for this song implies that despite the hurt Race won’t show it. His ‘I’m fine’ answers definitely has a double meaning behind it most of the time but he doesn’t wanna burden his friends with his pain which is why that’s his go to answer. He’s got this mindset that he’s the one that’s suppose to cheer people up and not the other way around. He knows that mindset isn’t good and is trying to change it but he can’t help it.
Mirrorball. This one is because of the vibe of the song when Race is at his lowest point but also a few lyrics I want to focus on. ‘I can change everything about me to fit in’ and also ‘I'm still on that tightrope I'm still trying everything to get you laughing at me’ Honestly I feel like as much as he is likeable is because he tries his absolute best to be, as in changing himself for the different ppl he first meets. I feel he has a long history of not many ppl liking him bcs he is himself and at one period in his life he changed his personality so many times just because he wants to belong. Trying to change his humor just to get ppl to simply laugh at him. He has now grown to learn that it’s not good for him to do so but still have a tough time dealing it because validation is one of his love languages. It serves a problem for Race’s big heart. He’s very open for love (like i mention before in the previous songs) that sometimes he stretches himself a million different ways to please everyone. It’s definitely why I associate him with enchanted. But really, him being him is already enchanting enough but he has bad past with just being ‘plain old race’ so he pleases others.
Delicate. Now this one is when he finally comes to terms that he can’t and really shouldn’t please ppl. ‘He must like me for me’. One of the reasons why he loves the idea of loving and then being loved back is because of that one problem. He can still get ppl to easily like him by being smooth and pulling the right strings in them like I said before, but he’s learning now pleasing ppl isn’t always worth it. If it’s general like as an acquaintance or meeting someone for the first time or to sell papes, he’ll mostly be a pleaser but will try his best to hold back with that pleaser mentality when the new person gets closer to him to see if they do like him for him. He ofc still has a big heart that gets hurt easily but he is growing to learn to be careful with who he loves and puts his energy in. ME! is because he already has a unique personality that he should know better to love in itself while Delicate is a reminder that not everyone will love him for the way he is so he needs to be careful to not love too much. There are times where he accidentally slips away from his promise but most of the time he has learned to hold it.
This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things. Basically the song is about betrayal. After learning that the other person does not care about him the same way he does, he takes some time to heal and then once he’s strong enough he won’t hesitate to cut them out of his life. ‘Here’s to my real friends’ He knows he has ppl that loves him just the way he is, even though it’s sometimes a tough pill for him to swallow. But he’ll get there. He’s slowly unlocking that resilience in him. Race knows it’s there somewhere, he just needs time to look for it.
Most of these might not even make sense, and for that I apologize. It might even sound like I’m just repeating myself in 7896985 different ways but that’s fine, ig... I hope I got my point across. And I also would like to point out, when I say ‘love’ it doesn’t always mean romantically, aight? It means all sorts of love.
