There was silence. The shadows seemed to have become part of the night once again. I thought over what I’d said, and I knew that it was true. At that moment, for once in my childhood, I was not scared of the dark, and I was perfectly willing to die (as willing as any seven-year-old, certain of his immortality, can be) if I died waiting for Lettie. Because she was my friend.

summary
love makes monsters of us all...
When Vivien Webb breaks into Rainier Mortem’s office, he's only following the whim of his obsession. Love makes you do things like that. Things you shouldn’t. But when he finds—and impulsively steals—a hidden vial of demonic ichor, it sets in motion a chain of events at once everything he’s ever wanted and a nightmare made real.
In Rainier’s defence, sleeping with a student was never something he intended to do, things just sort of shook out that way. Vivien is different. Special. Addictive. And Rainier’s never been good at denying himself what he wants. Besides, if the kid stole his ichor, he needs to know sooner rather than later, because he has plans for it far greater than whatever street corner Vivien’s planning on selling it on.
But it isn’t the ichor either of them should be concerned with—it’s the thing it came from. Because demons, much like lovers, want nothing less than all you have to give.
cast
Vivien Webb - gay transmasc nightmare boy. loves spiders, eyeliner, and Rainier Mortem. many issues, none of which he's dealing with. undiagnosed autistic (no, he hasn't figured it out yet either. it's not going well for him.) ftm in this case being female to monster.
Rainier Mortem - wretched bisexual demonology professor. hot and charming and knows it. incapable of taking responsibility for anything. the closest thing demonology has to a rock star. astonishingly good with his mouth. dirtbag trans ally and horny bastard.
Wolfe Talbot - Rainier's oldest, longest-suffering friend. former army medic, current paramedic. regrettably still a little bit in love with Rainier. regularly calls Rainier on his bullshit (not that Rainier listens).
Holly Barker - Wolfe's girlfriend and former classmate of Rainier's. feminist, pagan, and prone to speaking her mind. would stab Rainier in the balls given the opportunity. possibly the only actually sane person in this book.
Alice Vox - hottest, gothest sex worker. owns the nightclub Wonderland. another old friend of Rainier's who is actually smart and never slept with him (much to his neverending despair). enjoys fucking with people.
taglist: @belovedviolence @foxboyclit @coven-archives @mjjune @revenantlore @sarandipitywrites @noblebs @k--havok @asterhaze @verba-writing @indecentpause @bootstrapparadoxed (ask to be +/-)

If I were greedy…
I spend a disproportionate amount of time appreciating the addition of these four simple words to the "I really wanted to develop these myself…" line in the manga side scene with how much insight they provide the audience into Ray's mindset during this arc.
Greedy people don't pull off successful escapes. Greedy people risk getting their friends killed. Greedy people end up losing everything.
(Chapter 181.1 | Chapter 4)
It's a layered message to Isabella as well.
You've known what I've wanted for a long time now. None of those three things have changed. You don't have to worry about me betraying you.
The way he looks at her when he says it, too; tries to make himself both nonthreatening to not invoke her ire or suspicion, yet aware enough to convey he can still competently complete his side of their agreement (along with a bit of pettiness, wanting to believe he has more control of the situation and not wanting to let it seem like she can pull a fast one on him. Knowing what's to come in less than 48 hours is heartbreaking), all while having the most subtle sad and tired tinge to his eyes and subdued grin to mask it.
(Because what if things were different for the two of them. For all of them.)
He already believes he's asking for so much, and yet…
(Chapter 181.1 | Chapter 93)
They're worth it.

WOAH PORTAL 2 POST???? In 2024? More likely then you think-
Anyways this is just a result of me getting back into Portal, and subsequently reading all the Portal fanfics, and never being able to see the cores as anything other then how the Geekenders musical portrays them…
So sorry blond Aaron/Craig/Fact writers or short Rick truthers but I ignore your reality and substitute my own-
If anyone recognizes what fic these designs are from- I love you (tbh this really started from me seeing if I could draw the cores differently despite them all having identical bodies).
If not- please for the love of god read this - it’s so, so well written and has a great plot, and if Fact Core is your favorite then you are in for a TREAT
Anyways- if the above designs didn’t tip you off on what fic this is then I drew some moments from said fics except with what I was visualizing. If you’ve never read it- have a sneak peak on wtf happens in it.
