You can't escape his hold, bent this way and that way as he teases you for really thinking that he sees anybody that isn't you. He calls you possessive names, moving against you in ways that make you see stars over and over again.

ive been a halfhearted dnd defender for a minute, bc i was really involved in indie ttrpg twitter for a while and I Am Not Anymore because frankly. it just got too hostile and crab bucket-y. a lot of people acting like critical role or dimension 20 were opposing them by playing a game that had widespread brand recognition (and also getting mad whenever critrole played something OTHER than dnd. i haven't forgotten how hostile everyone i knew in that scene was when critrole played monster hearts. like what do you want??) or like people who play dnd are popular jocks and people who play indie games are bullied nerds. when actually we're all nerds. nobody is cool here.

and i would especially get frustrated when people would recommend games to play instead of dnd that are not at all a comparable experience, or didnt have the same things people liked in dnd. sure, you could play Masks if you want to play a superhero game instead of just reskinning DnD, but Masks is about teens, and the fact that you're playing as teens is core to the mechanics, so it's not a good suggestion for someone who wants to play as adult superheroes. sure you can suggest someone play Blades in the Dark if they want to play a heist team, but BitD is incredibly punishing! every time ive played it, it felt almost impossible to get a full success at anything. that can be fun, if that's the kind of game you want, but if i want to play a game where i feel cool and like im good at things, then BitD is not a good replacement! I cant tell you how many times I've seen people say that you don't need to just reskin dnd when there are games that are more specifically tailored to the experience you want, and then in the same breath act like the games they're suggesting ARENT specific actually and can be used to craft any kind of experience you want. Is the genre baked into the mechanics, or isnt it? because it cant be both!

Them starting with sally trying teach percy how to swim and percy being scared is fantastic for two reasons: number one, its a normal kid thing and number two it ties into later in the books when we find out percy has a fear of drowning. the funniest (tragic) thing is multiple times and in different canons bruce HAS tried healthier coping methods and life choices than being 'just' batman. he journals and its stolen and hes blackmailed with it and alfred is put at risk because of it. he skips patrol for a date and people are killed. hes goes to therapists and they either try to kill him or end up getting killed, leading bruce to blame himself and not attempt it again. he rests while being sick and wakes up exhausted and in pain and feeling guilty because he thinks of how many aren't waking up because of his need to sleep.

but when hes paranoid, hes more likely to benefit for it. from contingency plans to obsessive training to get through a fight or a dangerous situation. from excessive research to solve crimes and help people to pushing his body constantly because his weakness can be what gets someone killed. hes keeping people at arms length the best he can lest they hurt him and what hes fighting for or end up being killed because tragedy follows him like a hungry dog waiting for its next meal.

sure, his obsessiveness blows up in his face sometimes. hes scolded for it, people feel betrayed from it, hes isolate because of it. but if people get away, dont they usually end up better? he'll rather care from afar and know theyre safe but hate him then chance them being killed or used as a weapon because he wasn't prepared.

hes caught always feeling selfish for his love, something thats always fueled him and his choices, because he knows what it brings. hes caught feeling guilty in his attempts of normality and wanting a real life because then who will take care of gotham and who is he to say his happiness is worth more than the strangers on the street lives? hes always punished if he attempts happiness and hes punished when he attempts to always be prepared—the only difference is the later usually doesn't have as many people being killed. so without fail, every single time, bruce is going to sacrifice his own life and his own happiness so others can have it instead. and usually, its the 'right' choice, all other options leading to something terrible.
