i think it's funny that there's a sort of inevitability to buck and eddie becoming a popular ship when you look at the start of s2. and it's not because they're two attractive guys or because of their chemistry or even because of what their relationship becomes later on. it's because of how eddie is introduced and folded into the narrative
with abby gone, there's a void in the show
maddie slips into her role at dispatch, taking over that 911 operator pov and offering the compassionate and clever perspective abby brought to the emergencies she dealt with
eddie, on the other hand, takes on her role in buck's life
abby is the person buck spends the most time with on a one to one basis in s1. abby is the one he talks to and who also confides in him when she's struggling. abby is the one he makes a conscious decision to step up for at the end of s1.
with her gone, it would make sense narratively to introduce a new love interest for buck. instead they introduce his sister (a dynamic we understand already exists, even if we don't know it yet) and his new coworker/best friend (and rival for approximately 20 mins lol) and everything abby was to buck and was for buck basically gets transferred to eddie. this is the person he's spending time with now, this is the person confiding in him, this is the person he can show up for over and over again because he wants to
i remember when i was watching the show for the first time back in 2021 i was trying So Hard not to get sucked in to buddie so i was very much watching as an outside observer. and i remember watching those first 4 or 5 eps of s2 and thinking, 'oh yeah i see why this is a thing because if this was a man and a woman all of this would be hinting to them falling in love down the line'
and even all these years and rewatches later it still reads like that!!!!
so much of those first couple of eps is orchestrating moments to establish buck and eddie's dynamic:
buck reassuring eddie during the earthquake that chris is fine before bringing eddie to pick him up at the end of the night (vs. say, buck helping abby look for her mom when she's goes missing and reassuring her, until he brings her to the hospital once she's found - significantly their first meeting and the thing that changes things between them).
and then buck taking eddie to the hospital when pepa calls about isabel's accident, giving bobby a head's up about eddie bringing chris to the station, discussing eddie's struggles with maddie bc he wants to help, calling carla to help eddie with childcare (all a direct parallel to bobby's encouragement he step up for abby and the way he did try to do that before she left)
those first few eps tell us eddie is Important to buck and he is personally invested in trying to make eddie's life better/more manageable (and on the flip side, they obviously need to create connections between eddie and the other characters if they want us to root for him. and with bobby and athena together, hen with karen, and chimney about to meet maddie for the first time, the only person missing a counterpoint is buck)
and none of this is me saying the show intentionally put eddie in abby's shoes (they definitely didn't) but from a purely logistical perspective of making eddie buck's primary new scene partner and when you consider the show didn't make the effort to establish ali as a new viable rival to what abby was for buck, it's like, of course people are gonna latch onto eddie and buck's relationship instead!!!!! of course this is where we were gonna end up!!!!!! what else did you expect!!!!!!

9-1-1 7x10 speculations
So! With the stills that came out today, and mildly silently freaking out because I was at work, I have many thoughts!
So tentative timeline at the beginning of the episode.
Eddie and Buck talking / Madney talking with Hen -> Eddies Parents arriving -> Buck and Tommy's date night / Bathena house fire -> Hospital -> Athena investigating the fire ->Chris going back to Texas
I think it will start with the aftermath of Chris and Marisol discovering Kim. So I feel like Marisol dumping Eddie's ass and Chris locking himself in his room will be off-screen and Eddie is gonna be explaining everything to Buck in the aftermath because we see him gesticulating wildly and running his hand through his hair about why Buck is trying to understand what happened
The only thing that I am unsure of is why the Diaz Parents are in town? But I feel like it was a surprise that they show up at Eddie's house, and they stumble upon this situation and Eddie has no choice but to explain what happened, especially when you see the still where I'm pretty sure Eddie is showing a picture of Kim.
I also feel like Buck will try to talk to Chris and Chris will angrily say that his Dad is a hypocrite because he is dating two women, paralleling how Chris got the talk on how he is a player at the beginning of the season by dating multiple girls.
After that Buck gotta leave because of date night with Tommy and Eddie insists that he leave to make it in time.
So date night is going well, but oh no! Buck receives a call from the Hospital? May? Chim? about how Bobby and Athena are in the hospital. Tommy drives Buck to the hospital because he physically cannot.
Eddie also gets the call from another member of the 118 and leaves Chris with his parents to go to the hospital too.
The Madney and Hen scene will happen at the same time as the Buck and Eddie aftermath scene. Henren probably got good news from Deidre/the judge about how Mara's adoption will go forward despite the councilwomen's attempt to block it. You see Madney and Hen smiling throughout the stills of that scene.
Then when Hen is going to social services or the courtroom, she'll get a call about Bobby from a member of the 118.
Athena's still shows that it will be after the events we see in the promo. Athena is gonna find out where Amir lives and she will confront him. Sorry guys, I really feel like she pulls her gun on Amir while showing whatever it is in her hand because she feels convinced that it is Amir who sets fire to her house after how Amir reacted when he was in her home last episode. Amir is going to say something that convinces Athena that it is not him because he is a red herring!!
Anyways, going back to the stills. One of the last scenes is how Chris announces to Eddie that he will be going back to Texas with his grandparents for the summer because he is so mad at him. Eddie stricken by all the events, will let him go back. But before Chris goes, Eddie will say to his son how he loves him that he is gonna work on himself, that he can call anytime, and that he will do his best to answer, because you know, work. Buck will also be there to see off Chris. Other theories that are floating in my head:
The Cartel that Herman is part of is responsible for the Bathena fire. The propane tanks are set up for a criminal fire! And it doesn't feel like it's Amir. Even if we see Amir angry about how Bobby has a family, I don't think he is vengeful.
The 118 will be split up at the end of the season and Captain Gerrard will take the place of Bobby as interim captain, while Bobby is recovering. Because I am 99% sure that Bobby will survive his heart attack and will come back in season 8 as Captain after recovering and going to more therapy!
Anyways, back to the interim: Even if Hen was a hero in the cruise disaster, she did disobey orders from Chief Simson and will be penalized. At the same time, the councilwoman or someone else will see how the 118 is too close as a team, too family-like, and someone doesn't like it and will take to the appropriate people to disperse the 118 across various fire stations in LA except for Buck and Ravi. In turn, Eddie will feel isolated just like Ryan said in the interviews, and will spiral in between seasons.
I feel like the still with Chief Simson will announce any of the ideas in the above paragraph.
Interesting tidbit. We see Eddie reading from the prayer book in Bobby's hospital room with Buck beside him.
To end all of this: Buck and Tommy are thriving! ✨ Even with all the failed dates we have been seeing!
So! With the stills that came out today, and silently freaking out because I was at work, I have many thoughts!
So here is my tentative timeline at the beginning of the episode.
Quick rundown:
Eddie and Buck talking / Madney talking with Hen -> Eddies Parents arriving -> Buck and Tommy's date night / Bathena house fire -> Hospital -> Athena investigating the fire / the 118 at Bobby’s bedside ->Chris going back to Texas
The details:
Eddie/Buck scene:
I think it will start with the aftermath of Chris and Marisol discovering Kim. Marisol will be dumping Eddie's ass and Chris will be locking himself in his room will be off-screen and Eddie is gonna be explaining everything to Buck in the aftermath. We see him gesticulating wildly at Buck and running his hand through his hair about in the stills. Buck tries to understand what happened and will counter-argument on the actions that he did while also being compassionate about the situation.
The only thing that I am unsure of is why the Diaz Parents are in town… But I feel like it is a surprise that they show up at Eddie's house, and they stumble upon this situation. Eddie has no choice but to explain what happened, and shows a picture of Kim. Helena reacts to how similar Shannon and Kim are. Understandably, Ramon and Helena are disappointed in their son, but hopefully they are compassionate about the whole thing even if it is wrong.
I also feel like Buck will try to talk to Chris and Chris will angrily say that his Dad is a hypocrite because he is dating two women, paralleling how Chris got the talk at the beginning of the season on how it is wrong to be dating multiple girls.
Buck/Tomy scene:
After all of that, Buck gotta leave because of date night with Tommy and Eddie insists that he leave to make it in time.
Madney/Hen scene:
The Madney and Hen scene will happen at the same time as the Buck and Eddie aftermath scene. Henren probably got good news from Deidre/the judge about how Mara's adoption will go forward despite the council women's attempt to block it. You see Madney and Hen smiling throughout the stills of that scene.
Then when Hen is going to social services or the courtroom, she'll get a call about Bobby from a member of the 118.
Athena:
The Athena stills show that scenes that are shown will be after the events we see in the promo. Athena is gonna find out where Amir lives and she will confront him. Sorry guys, I really feel like she pulls her gun on Amir while showing whatever it is in her hand. She feels convinced that it is Amir who sets fire to her house after how Amir reacted when he was in her home last episode. Amir is going to say something that convinces Athena that it is not him because he is a red herring to mislead us all!!
Chris/Eddie
I’m pretty sure that one of the last scenes in the episode will be when Chris announces to Eddie that he will be going back to Texas with his grandparents for the summer because he is so mad at him. Eddie, stricken by all the events, will let him go back. But before Chris goes with his grandparents, Eddie will say to his son how he loves him, that he is gonna work on himself, and that he can call anytime, Buck will also be there to see off Chris as seen in the stills and provide support and comfort. Other theories that are floating in my head:
The Cartel that Herman is part of is responsible for the Bathena fire. The propane tanks are too well set up! And it doesn't feel like it's Amir. It is too well organized, although I don’t feel like Amir is a sloppy guy, but still not him. Even if we see Amir angry about how Bobby has a family, I don't think he is vengeful enough to try and kill Bobby and Athena. When Bobbys truck was stolen by the cartel, the cartel probably found his insurance stored in the truck because everyone does that, including me, and found his address through those papers. And then set up the fire during the night.
I am 99% sure that Bobby will survive his heart attack and will come back in season 8 as Captain after recovering and going to more therapy!
The 118 will be split up at the end of the season and Captain Gerrard will take the place of Bobby as interim captain, while Bobby is recovering.
Even if Hen was a hero in the cruise disaster, she did disobey orders from Chief Simpson and will be penalized. Chief Simpson appointing Captain Gerrard as interim Captain for the 118 instead of Hen is her punishment. To go even further, I feel like the councilwomen is angry that Henren adoption went through, and she pulled strings and also whispered in Chief Simpson ear saying the 118 is too close to each other, too family-like, and that it would be better that they separate the 118 across various fire stations in LA except for Buck and Ravi, who stays at the 118. In turn, because the 118 is dispersed across the city, Eddie will feel isolated just like Ryan said in the interviews, and will spiral  and maybe understand himself more in between seasons.
I feel like the still with Chief Simpson will announce any of the ideas in the above paragraph.
It doesn’t go in the theories of 7x10, but I feel I should include it here. When Bobby felt the metal being heavy on his chest when he was talking to his father in his dream in 7x09, it was a sign that he was starting to have a heart attack. Because of his father waking him up and the adrenaline of saving Athena from the fire, it staved off the heart attack long enough to get outside of the house.
Interesting tidbit: We see Eddie reading from the prayer book in Bobby's hospital room with Buck beside him.
To end all of this: Buck and Tommy are thriving! ✨
I'm starting to have theories for season 8, but that is another post for another day!

Costume meta 6x12
Thank you wardrobe team - for giving me half a chance with the costumes this week 😂 After the insane costume levels last week, it was nice to have fewer costumes to talk about this week! Have to admit I did go off on a bit of a side quest while writing this - shout out to fridge and beer theory 😳😂🤓
I'm not going to go character by character this week because they did something really interesting with the colour palette this episode. So I'm going to break things down colour by colour and it means I'll be talking about Wendell, Tamara and Connor as well!
Firstly there were 3 main colour in use in 6x12 - red blue and grey, with a couple of secondary colours also in play - the army drab green, white and pink. There were also some very interesting parallels at play in the costuming as well - not only in relation to the text, but specifically to the shooting - we see a lot of costume references to that arc as a whole and I'll go into those as we get to them.
as always the rest is below the cut to save your dash!
Red
So in 6x12 we see red/maroon used 4 times and on all 4 occasions its being worn by someone in the role of advisor and or parent/carer.
First up we have Athena (her in a rare denim wearing occurrence!!) in a wine red turtle neck - she is filling the role of advisor for Bobby here - providing him with information pertaining to the investigation into Wendell's death. she is displaying her care for Bobby and his wellbeing - pursuing a seemingly impossible task to help him get answers - she fully understands Bobbys need to pursue the case - the potential for it to impact on Bobbys sobriety if he's unable to get answers. I've spoken before about red being an energetic and powerful colour, we see both those aspects at play in this costume - Athena has powerful information that reenergises the case for Bobby. This is Athena in supportive spouse mode.
Tumblr media
Next up we have Maddie - very intentionally in her dispatcher uniform and this putting her in maroon/burgundy. The use of her uniform is an indicator of Maddie managing things - putting up a sort of boundary. She is managing Buck in the same way she would manage one of her calls at dispatch. I need to mention the fact that Buck is in navy blue here - that he is wearing a tee that matches his own uniform and we barely see the grey joggers because he is standing behind the kitchen island. It is important to recognise that both of them are hiding behind being 'in uniform' and we see that fact effectively erecting barriers between them - it is only when the are both out of those colours that they are able to talk and understand (I'll talk more on that later on!).
Tumblr media
Wendell's costume here is such a choice!!! Even if we hadn't been told in the previous flashback that Wendell was ex military, we would have been able to reach that conclusion ourselves because of this costume. does it remind you o the way they've styled anyone else on the show? perhaps a certain someone with their own military background?? thats right - this costume is straight out of the Eddie Diaz costume book! long sleeve maroon henley, olive drab combat style trousers and smartish leather boots. they've given Wendell his own twist - with the metal watch and the necklaces, but the look is deliberately meant to look similar to Eddie. The general audience will subconsciously draw the association.
For me this costume and its use in this particular scene is super fascinating - a conversation about 'getting back out there' and dating around a bit and the concept of impulsivity compared with Bobby knowing that Athena makes him feel like he's on solid ground. the costume is very much helping to foreshadow Eddies story here - he's going to take the road that Wendell suggests here - date around a bit - before figuring out what Bobby already has - that he wants and already has someone who makes him feel like he's on solid ground. the show has been paralleling Bathena and Buddie for a long time now, this is just another example of them doing this, especially because Bobby and Buck have been costume paralleled a lot, as have Athena and Eddie. The fact that the show has chosen to use this scene as part of this episode where those costume parallels are especially loud is really telling, clever and shows they're having fun with the build up of this slow burn!
Tumblr media
Eddie - Like I've said above this is some very intentional costume paralleling going on in terms of foreshadowing for Eddie in the rest of season 6. But there is also the parallel to Athena and Maddie (we can pull Maddie into the paralleling because they chose to put Chimney in blue when Maddie get's home from work). the maroon is in the red part of the colour wheel and shares many of the same attributes - mostly relating to power, passion and confidence, but also its brown undertones hint at stability and comfort as well as protection.
These are all things we see from Eddie in the two scenes - the comfort and protection Eddie offers Buck in the first scene that allows Buck to fall asleep on the couch, with those same traits combining with stability, power and confidence in the kitchen scene. Eddie is the epitome of stability from bucks perspective - the Diaz house is a stable and supportive place and Eddie is at the centre of that for Buck. The power and confidence come from Eddies knowledge of Buck, giving him the space he needs and knowing when to push, but also from Eddie himself knowing where the line is - know ing that Buck won't benefit from Eddies full honesty at this point in time.
All of that is not the only thing that shirt is hinting at. I've spoken a lot about the use of maroon on male characters specifically as a symbol of fatherhood and parental responsibility and here is no different - Eddie making Christophers lunch in the kitchen scene (is this kitchen scene .3 or .4 ?) was a very deliberate choice for the simple reason that it connects to the shooting visually - right down to the choice of putting Eddie in dark trousers - mirroring Buck when he tells Christopher about his dad being shot. The Christopher of the equation remains relevant even now - as they actually talk about the shooting for the first time - he is not directly a part of the conversation, but he is still there in the background (in much the way the will still lingers in the background).
Tumblr media
Blue
So fun overarching fact about the use of blue in this episode - it gets progressively lighter as the episode progresses! This is something the show has been playing with a bit this season - especially in connection with Buck. It's so informative as to the journeys of Bobby and Buck in this episode.
We do also see Chimney and Tamara in blue in this episode, but only once. Chimneys is in balance to the Red of Maddie - its playing into the colour trope of couples that we've seen the show use over and over to both draw parallels between the actual couples on the show as well as draw parallels with those couples and Buddie.
Here we Have Chimney in a shade of blue he wears a lot, I think this jumper is the same on we see him in when Maddie's kitchen floods, but the lighting is very different in the two scenes and that makes it hard to be sure. it is important to note that this blue doesn't sit in the same colour spectrum of the other blues in this episode - its much more of a green blue - having peacock or turquoise undertones. this is a deliberate choice - it still allows chimney to sit in the colour blocking of blue and red that we see in this episode and in the show more widely, but it also others him - he doesn't fit into the journey towards healing that we see the others go on.
Tumblr media
Bobby goes through a spectrum of blue like I said. this first polo is really hard to define - its under a heavy filter which gives everything a greyish yellow tone - which the show uses in most of its flashback scenes. we can see its blue, but as to the specifics of shade, its hard to tell - it is definitely towards a navy colour, but not as dark.
This is a moment when Bobby is vulnerable, but is accepting of help - a darker navy wouldn't be the right choice here - bobby is in the darkness that navy hints at, but he is also accepting the help he asked for and this lighter slightly greener tone the filter gives the shirt shows us that - the greener tone suggesting growth.
Tumblr media
Then we move on to the shirt we see Bobby in for most of the episode. The lighter navy with a bluish grey check pattern. The Check foreshadows (as always) the problems Bobby is going to face in his hunt for the truth of what happened to Wendell.
Tumblr media
I loved the fact that they put Bobby and Tamara in similar shades of blue for this scene. its a brighter blue - much more of an azure or ultramarine blue - much more hopeful supportive and accepting. its meant to show us that they are in the same place emotionally, but also it ties the help they received from Wendell to the two of them - pointing out that because of him they are both on the right path .
Bobby then wears full dark navy blue when the Walshes are arrested (the picture of this is down in the other colours section of this post) with the same green jacket as the one he wears when he meets up with Tamara
Tumblr media
Then we get this grey blue shirt when we see Bobby in full sponsor mode.
As you can see the blue gets progressively lighter as Bobby progresses through the episode and we end up with him a colour that matches the check from the first shirt. I think this is intentional - that we're supposed to read it as Bobby breaking out of things that have been holding him back up to now. The other thing about this blue/grey shirt is that it's almost the same colour as the knit polo that Buck is wearing . This is telling me two things - we are supposed to make the connection between where Bobby is at and where Buck is at respectively - that they are at similar points in their respective healing journeys - something made more obvious by the two costumes being worn at the same time in their respective scenes. The other thing it's doing is reinforcing the father son aspect of Bobby and Bucks relationship - visually connecting the two of them at the same time as the script.
Tumblr media
Buck in navy - like I said above - this is very much about reflecting Bucks LAFD uniform - especially in relation to Maddie, Josh and to a point Hen. we get to see the grey sweatpants much more when it comes to Hen, because this is the person Buck has been most honest with up to this point and then Connor - once Buck establishes he's not part of Maddies schedule!
The navy is also an outward manifestation of Bucks internal struggles with the whole dying part of his reality post lightning strike. navy is often associated with depression and with avoiding confrontation (one of the reasons its used as a uniform colour so often) and attention. Here we have a Buck who is trying to do both - avoid causing confrontation and trying to deflect attention away from himself (the script also shows us this by is his leaving a note and running to Eddies) ad well as making it obvious that Buck is struggling with his mental health and over facing up to the reality that he died.
Tumblr media
The final costume we see Buck in is this very light blue knit polo - which has grey undertones and connects in with crash and learn and the locker room conversation Buck has with Hen - about the secret to happiness. Having seen Buck in blue or grey for all of the episode, this bluish grey merges the two colours together and implies that the two different versions of Buck - the closed off navy blue one and the honest vulnerable grey ones have merged - erring more towards the grey version of Buck than the navy one. this is a clear choice - it shows Buck accepting and embracing that more vulnerable version of himself and we see that in action when he talks to Maddie about her over the top schedule.
The other thing with this pale blue is that it ties into a series of moments we've seen from Buck since 5x18. The blue suit of Hen and Karens wedding - representing the freeing himself of Taylor, the blue shirt from the locker room conversation with Hen when we see Buck really start to think about what it is that he wants/needs to be happy and when we find out that Kameron is pregnant, and now this one. All of these are moments when Buck is making progress in figuring out what he wants and how he can find his happiness - in some ways they are like the use of Bucks white shoes - where as those are a more general representation of his journey - the smaller steps as it were, these blue outfits are bigger strides forward.
Tumblr media
Grey
I have so many thoughts about the grey of it all in this episode!! We only see Buck and Athena in grey.
Athena wears this grey turtleneck and waterfall front cardigan combo. Grey is a neutral colour, but it is also a colour of compromise and here we see Athena essentially compromising with bobby and giving him the information he needs to get in contact with Tamara.
Tumblr media
The ribbed grey jumper that Buck wears to Eddies house along with the lighter grey sweats is such a choice. First thing to point out- this jumper has been put on over the navy blue tee - we can see a slither of the tee in the picture below - between the jumper and the sweats (costume department for the win on little details like these!)
Grey is like I said above a neutral colour, but it is also somewhat ambiguous - because of its place between black and white on the colour chart. it is also associated with wisdom and maturity. here we have a Buck who is being mature in his recovery - being wise
Tumblr media
The fact that the ribbing gives the jumper an air of chainmail is also an interesting thing, it hints at the idea of protection - its not the full on protection of plate armour, but it is non the less a protective layer - in this instance it is Buck both protecting himself from Maddie's overbearing (but well meant) schedule, but it also serves as a barrier for the kitchen conversation - that in between stage we've spoken of, where Buck and Eddie aren't fully ready to talk about the full implications of the shooting. Eddie reads it and doesn't go into the full truth of what he remembers - the grey jumper is the visual representation of the fact Buck is still not fully ready to talk about it (even if Eddie is).
The use of ribbing also means this jumper fits into a theory i've been keeping an eye on since 6x01 with regards to Buck and vertical stripes - you can read it at the end of the 6x01 meta if you haven't already read it. Essentially though - Buck seems to wear vertical stripes when he is emotionally imprisoned or trapped in some way. this jumper is maybe stretching the metaphor a bit, but the theory works for this scenario - Buck is struggling - reckoning with death and the emotional trauma that has brought him. Its going to be interesting to see if this continues to play out in the rest of 6b!
The final thing to point out about this jumper is the long sleeves - and this ties into the costumes of all the other characters as well - when around Buck. If Buck is wearing short sleeves everyone else is wearing long sleeves and if Buck is wearing long sleeves, then the characters he interacts with (only Eddie) are wearing short sleeves. This is significant - Buck is his most open and honest about where he is at with his recovery etc when he's wearing long sleeves and his opposite is wearing short. Eddie wearing short sleeves appears to be concealing things from Buck - much like Buck has been doing with everyone else in this episode - not being completely honest with them. its a play on the idea of Buck being good at hiding his true feelings from others - in physical form and only making himself vulnerable when he has protections in place and he's with one of the few people who can understand his trauma (Chimney is the other one but we don't see them interact in this episode!).
Tumblr media
Other colours
Hens costume is very much carrying on her costume theme from 6x11 - which is perfect - the orange brown and green place her in the same context as we saw her last week - its a form of continuity - she is still the representation of emotional strength and optimism through the orange, the brown is still the representation of stability and the green (which has gotten brighter) is still a reference to growth and security and health. The green being more obvious this epsiode is showing us the improvement in Bucks health - Hen is the most skilled medic on the show - her being in green is a show of that in connection with other characters when the scene is not about her directly - in this case - Buck and his health post death and resurrection.
Tumblr media
Connor is an interesting one this week, the tan/beige jacket combined with the baby pink and blue pinstripe shirt is telling me a lot of things! Firstly the beige - beige is considered a 'boring' colour and as such it is often used to mask other things - its a colour that 'blends in with the crowd' and it being worn as an outer here is very much playing into that as a concept - outwardly Connor is deflecting attention away from himself - from his own internal struggles
The pink and blue pinstripe shirt however is saying a whole lot, firstly the use of pale pink and blue - colours that often have 'baby' placed in front of them as a denotation or the specific shades - baby pink and baby blue. This automatically and subconsciously encourages the brain to think about babies - the central theme of Connors arc on the show - pregnancy, babies/children and fatherhood or pending fatherhood.
Pink has lots of meanings attached to it, but pale or baby pinks are generally considered to represent immaturity and or naivety and I think that is what its use is trying to suggest here - it is foreshadowing and hinting at Connors actual feelings around Kameron's pregnancy.Its telling us that Connor hasn't actually thought through (not necessarily intentionally) the full reality of being/becoming a father when the child is not genetically his - its hinting that that is his journey (and Bucks) for the remainder of the season and pregnancy.
Again there are lots of meanings that can be attached to blue and it comes in a myriad of shades (probably the most wide range of shades of any colour to be honest) which also impacts its meaning. The blue pinstripes here are very much of the baby blue variety there are a couple of things that I think the use of blue here is trying to tell us - firstly blue at the lighter end of the spectrum tends to be positive, it also tends to be responsible and reliable. the fact that the blue stripes 'run through' the pink - the implication being that it runs through that naivety that I spoke about a moment ago - thats essentially a good thing - its telling us that the outcomes of this arc will be positive - I'm guessing that Connor will get his head around being a dad - learning and understanding that genetics don't necessarily make a father.
Tumblr media
The other thing we need to talk about with regards to Connor - that I spotted and I think hints at things to come is his wedding band. in the above picture he is wearing it on his right hand rather than his left - as he has done all the way up to this point. THis can only be an intentional choice - in America the most common finger to wear a wedding band on is the left ring finger (its not something that would get missed or that would be put on the wrong hand by accident). Connors wedding band changing hands is pretty telling.
Interestingly there are a few things about wearing a wedding band on the right hand instead of the left - it is common in many countries - including Peru (👀) but it is also symbolic - before gay marriage was legal, it was (and still is) common for same sex couples to wear rings on their right hands as a show of commitment. The other (and possibly more relevant reason here) is that it is a fairly common thing for people cheating on their partner to do - it can be a signal of availability. Now I'm not saying Connor is out and out cheating on Kameron, what I am saying is that his wedding ring changing hands may be a visual signal that he is struggling with his relationship and is emotionally not al in it at the moment - that he is perhaps not feeling connected to his marriage because of his struggles with the baby and not being able to emotionally invest in that aspect of his relationship at this moment.
Its going to be very interesting and telling the next time we see Connor and Kameron on screen together if the ring changes back - and if we see it on the right hand again!
Tumblr media
Maddie in black and pink when Buck and her have an honest conversation about their individual trauma and the way its interconnected is an interesting choice the black and pink has similar vibes to the maroon and black of Maddie's uniform, except its dressed down, its more flow-y and as a result more inviting of Bucks honesty and Maddie's own admissions. The pink is representing Maddie's nurturing tendencies, but also her unconditional love for her brother. I've said before that black is a colour of power and sophistication - here those traits are showing the power of growth and sophistication is both Maddie and Buck developing and understanding the complexities of their traumas and developing better ways of dealingwih them.
Tumblr media
I've included the picture of the shooting below at this point because I want to highlight a couple of things. I've used this picture because its the only time we can see all of what Buck is wearing - White high-tops, black socks, grey trousers and the infamous white shirt with grey pinstripes.
Tumblr media
Tamara is the first costume hint at the shooting arc we get in the episode. the white pinstripe shirt and the white high-tops are very much a direct reference to Bucks outfit. If we look at the bigger picture here and look at both the arc and the characters as a whole then we can see clear similarities between this arc and the shooting arc.
We have an 'overdose' as the catalyst in both arcs. Charlie both being dosed by his mother and his act of overdosing her, which leads to Eddie being shot as he tries to help. Then we have Tamara - in the same position as Charlie - she's being controlled in a similar way by the Walshes through her previous drug use etc. Wendell fills the role of Eddie in this arc - he is the one that goes in to help Tamara and ends up 'shot' (read shooting up as a metaphor for being shot!) as he tries to help. Only unlike Eddie, Wendell does actually die. Tamara also fits into the same roll as Buck - she is there when Wendell dies - in the same way Buck is there when Eddie gets shot.
Bobby and Athena placed in essentially the same roles (more on Athena in a moment) as in the shooting - a bit more of a lean into Bobby solving things where as Athena was more filling that role in the shooting arc, but the outcome is the same.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The arrest of the Walshes shows Athena back in her usual colour ways of black olive drab and white, which is an important touchstone for us as viewers (especially after we spent so much time in a coma world last week), but it also plays into the shooting arc throwbacks with her costume - the leather jacket is not identical, but its almost the same as the one she wears for most of the investigation into the shooter in the season 4 arc.
Tumblr media
Finally we get Athena in this amazing purple jacket - dark purple being a colour of magic, spirituality enlightenment and wisdom. this jacket is in its own way connected to the shooting arc - the fact that Bobby didn't let Athena in that time - when he was trying to sponsor the drunk driver from blindsided (4x09). It shows us just how far they have both come since that moment.
Tumblr media
Finally I have to talk about Bucks white high-tops because they were very prominent in this episode. I've had the theory for a while that they represent his journey towards happiness (there is a post on my pinned post all about it if you haven't read it or want a refresher!).
He wears them all the time he's not at the loft in this episode - their most prominent appearance is on Eddies Coffee table (buck I love you but you're a heathen!!) - literally the only time you should put your feet up on the coffee table is when you are at home - never at someone elses house - this plays into the whole 'this is Eddies house, I'm not really a guest' of it all. the fact that he does so in his white high-tops is actually really important - we've never seen those shoes anywhere except the floor up to now - Buck putting his feet up while wearing them is a symbol of both him being at home/ coming home, as well as a symbol - its foreshadowing that Buck's journey to find happiness ends here - at home in the Diaz house and as a part of the Diaz family!
Tumblr media
we also see him wearing them at the park when he is contemplating the fire that lead to him being hit by lightnin after his appointment with Dr Salazar - again this is Buck very much on his journey - he is contemplative and making progress!
Tumblr media
And there we have it 6x12 costume meta done!! Thank you as always for reading - it really does mean the world to me that you're interested in the costuming of our wee woo show!!
As always tagged people below - if anyone wants to be added to (or removed from) the list please let me know in the comments and I'll add you to the next one! Same goes if your url has changed and the tag is no longer working 😎
Until the next episode! 💜💜💜

Okay I've gotten, like, 5 asks about my theories on how I think Buck and T will break up in the past few hours and I don't want to screenshot them all and put them in one and also because yall can get real intense and while I do support you, I need to pick my battles lol, so have this post instead. First of all, I think everyone needs to let go of the idea that it will be perfect and calm and just fizzle out just because it is Buck's first queer relationship. Queer people are allowed to be messy, like, come on guys. And this show likes to keep their queer people messy. The first scene with Michael has May and Athena snapping at him, then we find out he's been cheating on Athena. We meet Eva before we meet Karen, so we meet Hen messy as fuck love before we meet her wife. Josh can't catch a single break. The idea that there will be nothing wrong with the relationship just because it's queer is just not it because if there were nothing wrong with the relationship the relationship wouldn't end. I think everyone is taking Tim and the "Buck is in a romcom" too seriously, there are ways to be messy without being traumatic and I want some drama because if nothing happens it will be BORING. I am begging for some spice between those two. Second, I have about 100 theories of how it could go, we just don't have enough information on s8 for me to say anything. Yes, T parallels Ali, but he also parallels Taylor, and Abby, he is all of Buck's love interest smashed into one, so he can go anywhere at this point. He could get the Ali treatment and get broken up with off-screen because the relationship isn't serious enough and they didn't make a point of establishing his connection with anyone else in 7b so they could just get rid of him if they chose to, just say he moved or whatever. He could get the Ana treatment where during the opening event they throw doubt into the relationship until it cracks. But he could very much also get the Taylor treatment and stick around who knows how long even though he's not being written as endgame. We don't really know where they are taking the story yet. Do I think Eddie is gonna play a part? Not really, not fully. But it will depend on the time jump for the season, if there's a four-month time jump, they will have been together for what? Six months? At that point to make T insecure about Eddie all of a sudden wouldn't be that easy. Unless they lean into the emotional infidelity angle, but that would pull the trigger on buddie, because you can't have T call Buck out on this without forcing Buck to think about it and realize he's right and I am actually hoping Buck has a cool-off period before jumping into buddie because Mr moving in without noticing, Mr I got an apartment because my gf needs a better place to sleep, Mr wanna help me pick a couch even tho we only had 3 dates and you actually stormed out of one, Mr wanna go with me to my sister's wedding even tho we only had half a date because you ran away needs to learn how to take a breath and not jump into the deep end and hope he won't drown. So I hope Eddie isn't a deciding factor tbh. Gerrard could create problems tho. The jealousy line of thought, well, T says he's jealous of Buck's found family with the 118 on two different occasions, a situation where T is witnessing that firsthand could create tension if they want. You could even have that focus being on how well Buck and Eddie work together without framing the whole thing to be about Eddie. Especially if Buck somehow manages to get Gerrard's respect or Buck interferes when someone is getting the Gerrard treatment, and he suggests Buck's life could be easier if kept his head low. Do I think age will be a factor? It could be? But it would depend on the circumstances, T is supposed to be in his mid-40s, Buck's 32/3, there is tension to be put there. The idea of kids keeps coming to mind with Chris being a wildcard for the season, but again, it would depend on how serious they are during s8 and how long they plan on keeping T around. And if the show will decide to make them want different things.
Personally, I think the relationship wouldn't last a lot beyond Buck's helpless crush phase, but that's a me thing, there are ways to make it plausible for the relationship to last more than the infatuation stage. And I don't see him being that long-term because of the very deliberate choice of having the camera pan to Eddie during the ceremony and the way T wasn't at the hospital. Even more, considering the way they filmed a bt scene at the hospital they didn't use. The show has a very specific way of writing endgame relationships and none of those are being used. But at this point in time, we don't know anything about season 8, so it's hard to say anything clearly because T is in a very ambiguous position. They had a conversation about taking things slow and we were shown that they are, that could be turned around in s8 where they are fully committed or it could just spiral more and more into the idea it has no depth. Or he could fully just not come back. It could go anywhere and until we find out more about the season, it all feels like fanfic planning, it's speculation and wishful thinking.

Buck and Eddie standing together at the end of the grave speaks volumes.
Buck putting flowers down while Eddie makes the sign of the cross in blessing.
Eddie: "We're all gonna die alone." (notice he says this after Buck tells him what Natalia said)
Eddie: "That was a beautiful thing Natalia did for her." -> I see you, Eddie
Eddie: "Really? Dating someone you rescued? You know that never ends well." (like I said, she's Ali all over again, but she's also Taylor and Ana)
Love Eddie's eye roll btw.
Buck: "There's something different about her. I feel like she sees me."
Tumblr media
"You know, like she sees me for who I really am and what I've been through."
Tumblr media
"I think she might even see more of me than I see in myself."
Considering what we saw happen on his date with Natalia and how this whole setup is happening, it's obvious Buck is trying to force something here that just isn't reality. This could be the result of the trauma he went through, but he had better immediate chemistry with Taylor when meeting her on an emergency. This isn't where Buck is supposed to be headed (meaning what his endgame will be) and the show is going to great lengths to showcase that. Which is why we have this scene (and Marie being Eddie's Thomas from 2x08 which doesn't surprise me that Eddie is thinking of the long-term future and Buck is still not thinking big-picture yet, not completely).
And sure enough:
Eddie: "Look, I know we razzed you about your whole math skills, maybe I even tried to get rich off of 'em, but to be honest, you haven't been the same since it happened." -> not only is math mentioned again (Buddie) but it's made very clear that Eddie sees how much Buck is floundering & considering what Buck just said about Natalia (who thinks his experience was really cool and exciting) but we didn't see her seeing into him like this, the show is telling you who really sees Buck the way Buck just described
And Eddie has his own realization and looks down at the grave. "But how could you be?" -> he hasn't been the same since Shannon died and he knows it
Buck: "The truth is I still don't know how to act. I am different, but I feel like I have to try and be the same old Buck. Mostly for the sake of everyone else." -> as we already knew, Buck is being performative with Natalia (aka flirting like the same old Buck would do & dating a woman he met on an emergency) & Eddie pretty much called it
Eddie: "You know, you don't have to be anything for anybody. Nobody is ever the same, from one day to the next. Experiences like this, they change us." -> not only is this the absolute truth, he's giving Buck (and himself) permission to be different and not be the same ol', same ol'
Eddie: "So what changed in you?"
Buck: "When I woke up in that hospital, I felt like I had gotten away with something."
Eddie: "You cheated death."
Buck: "My life could have ended. Right then and there, but it didn't. That has to mean something, right?"
Eddie: "It means you're one lucky guy."
Buck: "I don't think I'm gonna get that lucky again."
Eddie: "Well, maybe you don't have to. Lightning doesn't strike the same place twice."
Buck: "Which is why I have to make the most of every single moment. 'Cause from here on out, it's all a gift."
So not only do we have Buck and Eddie being paralleled to two out of the three main couples this episode (Maddie and Chim go through the auditing together, Bobby is there for Athena when her suspect dies unexpectedly) but we get this scene. And this scene is SO important. Not only from what I mentioned above but also the very scene itself happening. Eddie and Buck have admitted to the audience that they're different and they were standing together at a fresh grave (recent death -> old versions of themselves/their journeys) and had an emotionally intimate moment. When Eddie said Buck didn't have to perform, Buck jumped at the chance to speak his truth. Eddie asked what changed in Buck and we find out, but Buck also didn't ask Eddie this because through Athena, we found out Eddie has more questions than answers. And we've watched him get answers the past two seasons.
This is why when people say 'oh KR is separating Buddie' and 'Buddie will never happen' I shake my head. Because Buddie has been there all along and strengthening to lead to what we're hoping for, for some time now and this scene literally just doubled down on Buddie AGAIN. The same episode where it looks like Buck might have a new love interest, they're already telling us 'don't get comfortable, this is not here to stay'. By Buck's own words, he's being performative and trying to act like old Buck. In the same conversation he talks to Eddie about Natalia. And then they added how Eddie saw the real Buck in contrast to Buck thinking Natalia sees the real him and how it's important to him.
Literally, I almost expected some heart eyes to pop out in this scene or some sort of self-realization, that's how impactful this scene is for Buddie and how blatant it is. And a full episode after Eddie shot down his own date who mutually agreed.
At this point, we might get Buddie sooner than we think. I get the feeling Natalia will be the last ditch effort/pit stop before we get there.

Ok I just got put my thoughts about 911 6x17 onto a page before I explode. Heavy spoilers for 6x17!!!!
1. Buck and Natalia situation.
Why is she so pissed off at the fact that buck has dated women before? Yes I know it interrupted their date, so obviously you can be a little annoyed, and she tried to say it in a joking manner, but It really didn't come off like that. It came of like 'you dated other women? How dare you'. And yes his life is messy so it's OK to be overwhelmed by that a bit, but stormy off, and implying that it's completely over for them, at the mere idea of buck being a human with an life outside of her? I instantly thought she didn't like buck, she liked the stories she could get from him about death. As soon as he's anything more than that she bails.
2. The buck and Cameron situation.
As far as I know, they aren't close. Buck and Connor are, but not buck and Cameron so why is she coming to him first and not a close friend, family etc? And they were already weird about the sperm donor situation, so this definitely felt like overstepping of boundaries (addition to this is her just eating the meal he has set out, not even asking if she can have some first). But my main issue with this is where it looks like the writers are heading with this. Cameron and Connor are in a bad spot, and the last scene of buck shows him and her with 'love is in the air' playing in the background, a song they played for the other couples/potentially couples (bobby/athena, hen/karen, chim/mads, /eddie/insulation foam girl), which implies Cameron and buck might become a couple which is just so bad in so many ways. Yes it could just be a scene showing him being gentlemanly, giving her the bed and he takes the couch, bringing her pickles, and maybe him imagining a family of his own (not involving cameron), but with the music it really isn't looking good.
3. Eddie and insulation foam girl.
I forgot her name, I know it's starts with M. They met briefly, once, and I don't remember any chemistry (i barley remember her tbh). And now, with the music, they are implying a potential romance between her and eddie? Feels very rushed, and kind of a last ditch effect because they couldn't think of anything better.
4. The eddie bobby conversation.
I mean it all points to eddie and buck. Buck was the one there to sit with eddie at his lowest moments, buck was the one who always had his back. Making big bobby/Athena and eddie/buck parallels again.
*Also wouldn't of eddie asked buck first to help him build the project? He's always helping chris with school and he built or at least had a hand in building Chris's skateboard, so he has experience with diy. Not that i disliked the eddie + bobby time, it just confused me why it wasn't buck.
5. Eddie and Buck.
Eddie wants to be chosen by a romatic partner, and buck is at an impass where he needs to choose his romantic partner. You can put 2 and 2 together. Buck needs to back away from the Cameron/Connor situation like he did with the chim/mads in Boston situation: he got too involved with someone else's relationship and baby, and he nearly got people hurt/hurt himself, it's the same with the c/c situation now: he's done his part, now he needs to choose to step away. He also needs to choose whether his current(?) relationship with natalia is actually good for him, or whether it will end in hurt just like with his other relationships (hinted at with lucy and taylor). Eddie just wants someone he is already comfortable with, and that he has chemistry with, to make the initiative, he doesn't want to go out searching for love, he wants love to find him: he wants to be chosen.
6. Maddie and Chim.
On a happy note, this was adorable and I love the direction their relationship/dynamic/story is going in. I also really liked the talk mads had with hen: mads came in on offence, but hen handled it, knowing her own intentions were pure, and explained this to Maddie, helping her to work through the fears she had, just like with Chim. I wouldn't mind more hen and Maddie scens in the future, especially considering she is marrying hens best friend.
*Also side note we did not miss the fact that Buck had a ring cutter for 'other things ;)' fanfiction is abundant on the topic of 'other things' and buck.
7. Final odds and ends.
Loved the anniversary talk with Athena and the lady, then with Bobby. Just really sweet and heart-warming. I also saw someone sat that the 4-5 year anniversary they keep bringing up also coincides with how long eddie and buck have known eachother, so there could be a fun Buddy parallel there.
With eddie and tia texting, and the scene cutting to Chris on the laptop, it really looked like Chris was posing as tia, setting eddie up on dates. I assume this isn't what they intended but it was really weird editing and scene choice.
The guy maybe checking out eddie at the golf place, as well as the two women who could be lesbians, was just a real unsubtle hint (hopefully), as well as the general vibe of the sequence where everytime eddie tries to flirt with a woman, something bad happen: stop trying to force this man into a straight relationship, it's clealy ending in disaster each time! /hj
- also the plot thickening on the eddie/Shannon deal. Last episode we learnt that eddie ONLY married her because of Chris, very much implying he maybe didn't actually want to, it's just what he was expected to do, so he did it (comphet much?), and now we learn that eddie didn't even pursue shannon! Clealy she initiated everything, and he just went along with it! If they are not trying to say eddie is bi/gay/didn't like Shannon, then why do they keep framing it that eddie kinda felt forced to go out with Shannon and marry her? (From sociatal expectations, not necessarily forced by shannon herself)
Fin
Thank you if you read this very long rant: I just needed to get my thought down before I exploded form frustration :)

Random ramblings about 06x07
After my memefication of the events is now mostly dealt with (thank goodness, but I needed to get those out of the system first), I'm still very much confused and intrigued by the setup done in “Cursed”.
Sure enough, this episode was supposed to be a lighter one. We had a lot of good fun in that, but the episode provides great setup for the drama that's sure about to unfold further along the season.
So here I'm gathering some more or less coherent thoughts on the matter. Though I seriously don't know where all of this is headed. But here's to hoping anyway.
Connor and Kameron, desperation, grifters, and all of the awkward
I know others as well as me have joked about this, but those two are exceptionally weird when it comes to the sperm donation. Now, it's possible there was nothing grander to it, and the writers just wanted things to be extra awkward for laughs, by having them wind up at the station to have the firefam in the know (also… Shannon/Eddie parallels much, huh?).
Like, it's effective. All people who may have something to say about the matter find out at once, and we don't “need” separate conversations to have that unfold (aka saving screen time). It's economic in that way. So it's well possible that it was not supposed to be off-putting or whatever else. Just really awkward and quick to have everyone up to speed.
But. Holy crap. That was just soooooo weird.
Tumblr media
As others have noted, they continue to be pushy, acting all the while like they aren't being pushy. Again, I don't know if the show's gonna make anything of that, other than to highlight their desperation to have a child? Like, wanting to highlight that they don't want to go through the process again, now that they found someone who said he'd volunteer to donate. But. If the show wants to go down another route, well… perfect setup for that, too, I guess.
I don't believe Connor and Kameron will turn out to be evil sperm thieves (hehe). They just really want to have that baby. But they are extremely pushy in their pursuit, and it might be that the show highlights how Buck is especially vulnerable to that. So Connor and Kameron may (unconsciously) feed into that or may even take advantage of it, to a certain degree. And the show might actually decide to show how harmful that can be, even if they do not intend it. As Athena pointed out:
“The best grifters know how to play on people's desperation. The more desperate a person is, the easier it becomes to fool them.”
Now, again, I don't believe in evil sperm thieves here, just like I don't believe in bad intent on Connor's and Kameron's behalf (yet). But I can see this as a kind of foreshadowing/allusion to what's going on with Buck. And yes, here I go again, outing myself as a Buck Breakdown Truther until proven otherwise. I could see two scenarios in particular to get the job done right (or wrong), based on Athena's words that may come back to haunt Buck this season:
Connor and Kameron may (unconsciously) pressure Buck all the while yelling “no pressure though”, thereby actually creating more pressure for him than is necessary. It was the second time we've seen them do it with Buck, and Buck reacting the same way each time. Which is not to say I don't get the desperation they must feel. But it's very much in-tune for Buck to try to please them as a result and jump ahead, to be of service to them, to help them. So instead of giving him the freedom of choice and space for proper reflection, they are (unconsciously) backing him into a corner. Or perhaps more to the point: They are feeding right into so many of Buck's issues, likely without knowing it. And that may impact him very negatively moving forward. Thus far, every interaction we've seen between them was inherently about them. Even if they genuinely seemed to try to give Buck the free choice, they always circle back to their desperation to have the child. Again, I don't believe they do it consciously, necessarily. If you want something that much, it's the only thing you can think about. But turned around to Buck, that means that every meaningful interaction he's had thus far with the people he's making a great sacrifice for… it was never about him, it is never about him. It is only about his function to them as a donor. That is why Connor originally reached out to him, and as Hen pointed out, they will in all likability expect him to not have any place in their future (and more importantly in that of the child). In that way, they play on Buck's desperation to help them, out of their desperation to have a child. And I can very well see that this might be a route the writers might take all the same.
Buck is his very own grifter in this scenario. Buck is desperate for happiness, to finally get to the point where he is “at peace”. And he wants to believe that helping those two have a baby and build the future they always wanted will do the trick for him. To do something selfless, like Lev did, and then finally have that epiphany about what it is that makes him truly happy. For that, he is taking all of that pressure, and ignores all of those red flags and warning signs the whole damn universe seems to throw his way. Buck is fooling himself into believing that this is truly what he wants (at least at this point, though it might turn out later that he really is at peace with that, but he certainly isn't right now, he's just stubbornly refusing to reflect it on it any further, so not to be swayed). He is genuine in his wish to help them (have the baby). He knows that much, because he knows that they want that child (quick side note: I guess there might also be some level of Daniel trauma in there. Because here he has people who want a baby for the sake of the baby, unlike his parents, who wanted to have a baby for the purpose of saving their other child. And oh my, see who's coming back this season…).
In either scenario, Buck is likely to be left the fool, not necessarily because he's getting grifted, but because either they or he himself are actively helping him self-deprecate. Or at the least, that's a route the show might be taking on this one. And I'm dying to find out.
Buck's troubled relationship with his body
To send this ahead: There's soooooo much more to say about Buck's self-image and his relationship with his body, but for now, I'll just focus on it in relation to this season's arc.
While we mostly started out lightly regarding the matter, I found it almost jarring how much Buck's relationship with his own body came back into full swing ever since Connor and Kameron asked him to donate. All the while watching him reflecting on it drunkenly with Hen, then again with the puréed greens to deliver the best swimmers in the world… I can see this heading to a much darker place, moving forward.
Others have already pointed to the close connection to Buck's speech after the Daniel reveal, about defective parts and all. Which was another blow (alongside the reveal itself and its ramifications). Because Buck is very self-conscious when it comes to his body. So realizing that his body wasn't good enough, was “defective”, is a whole different story for someone like him.
Since early childhood, his body was a means to an end. To get attention from his parents, by getting hurt. Later on, numerous flings to satisfy the need and to please others, to be good for others, to feel his own body, to have all involved feel happy and content. To be good enough. Again, a means to an end (chasing meaningful connections by providing gratifying sex, by pleasing his partners and being praised for it). He prides himself on his physicality, noting to Bobby back in season 1 how he never had trouble with the physical aspects of training to become a Navy SEAL, but what that would have demanded of him psychologically and emotionally. To name but few examples.
Along those lines, he's been on the optimizing route, well before he started on the green menace for over a month. Buck talking to the guy with the tapeworm back in season 1, conversing about how to optimize body fat ratios or whatever else. Buck wanting to be the “bestestest boi and patient” by adapting his diet, back when he had the blood clots and wanted to prove that he (his body) was capable, functional, of use, for the one thing he found meaningful in his life. AKA being a firefighter. Now again with the green smoothies and his abstinence, to be the best donor ever. To please, to be good enough, or rather, better than good enough.
Tumblr media
Interestingly, all of those measures hardly seem to be about himself and doing things to feel good about himself, as himself, but more about optimizing his body for the sake of others. Being muscular and good-looking for hookups – it's about being appealing to them. Adapting his diet and making a show of it – it was to convince Bobby, among others, of his health and thus use as a firefighter. Drinking green smoothies and being abstinent for extended periods of time – it is for Connor and Kameron, to give them “best chances of success”. Not once did I get the vibe of Buck doing this to feel good about himself, to feel comfortable in his own skin, literally. Instead, he is making himself miserable, longing for more. Or, as Hen so eloquently pointed out:
“Buck, your idea of healthy is a side salad. When did puréed greens become a whole main meal?”
Yet again, interestingly, he often winded up failing with his self-optimization when it came to his body. All the healthy diet didn't get him his job back. The hookups may have gotten him appreciation for his performance, but the partners didn't stick around. Even Abby didn't stick around, even though he tried to support her not just physically throughout. And with the green smoothies and the abstinence… again, as others have noted, him trying so hard to be the best donor may have made the donation worse. He's trying sooooo hard that it backfires on him (i.e. having stayed abstinent for so long may have made the “swimmer count” reduce rather than increase, as far as I understood).
Now, if that's the narrative route they want to focus on, it could go three ways in my head (yeah, yeah, always thinking threeways, yo):
The donation isn't deemed “good enough” and they will ask him to donate again, and just stay clear from wanking for a week, not four (jizz I mean jeez). Which may either serve as a catalyst for Buck to really consider this, rather than jumping ahead in his pursuit to use his body for other peoples' benefit. Or it may feed right into his fears of his body not sufficing (or maybe a combination of both). This may force Buck to continue to put himself physically and emotionally through all that again, not for his sake, but that of others, making it less and less about his choice and more and more about needing his body to function, no matter what.
Buck turns out to share in Connor's issue, namely not enough swimmers. That'd fit just about half of Buck's insecurities. In that his body would not suffice to help. That his body is not good enough to do something he wanted (or thought he wanted) so desperately that he damn well ran to the clinic to jerk off into a plastic cup. To top all that, it'd mean that all the things he thought were “still in store” for him (as he alluded to when talking to Lev) are suddenly out the window. Namely, starting a family of his own, fathering children that are inherently his, finding true peace. So any “hope” Buck would have had to finally get to where Connor and Kameron are right now, already knowing what they want and with whom they want to have it with, is suddenly gone. And it'd be his own body that's always supposed to function that'd keep him from it. His own body would betray him in that way. Defective parts.
Buck turns out ineligible (e.g. due to the cancer in his family history or because of some other health issues Buck may not have been aware of). Either because the clinic advises against it, or Connor and Kameron back off when they get word of it. They may reconsider on “only” choosing someone who's supposedly very healthy in contrast to someone who's very good of character, as Connor insisted to Buck, if Buck has some health issue that he might pass down to the child. That would throw him for a complete loop, too. Because health is not supposed to be an issue for him. He is capable, after all, right? Right? He's good enough for that, right? Right?
Either scenario circles back to Buck's troubled relationship with his own body, in that his body is a means to an end for him. If he can't serve the means, then what is his body good for? If it can't create future, if it can't help, if it's not enough, how is he good enough (for his own happiness)? That would deliver great material for a potential breakdown for him.
And resolution can only come (pun not intended) if Buck manages to reconcile with his own body being as it is, accepting it as it is, and no longer regarding it as integral to his self-worth. That being at peace with what he has and is doesn't just relate to a couch or lack thereof, but to him being at peace with what he is, what his body is, instead of chasing unachievable standards and chasing praise and appreciation by means of his own body.
If that's the route they are taking, I do believe Eddie's role in that realization process will be of great importance. Eddie has proven to be one of the few people who get through to Buck when he's really far lost in his head. He already brought the point home about him not being expandable (and in that sense putting his body at risk for the sake of others unnecessarily). So the twist might be along the lines of: Buck realizing his body isn't any more expendable than anyone else's because Buck's body contains something invaluable, namely the person he is. His body is there to protect that invaluable core, not the other way around. And Eddie as his best friend (and love of his life and original baby trapper before Connor and Kameron got the idea, yo), as the person to address Buck like that back in season 4… it might bring this full circle for Buck at long last.
And yeah, that makes Buddie confirmation a very likely scenario in my head, as the conclusion of that arc. It'd just fit so damn neatly, if you think about it. Because Buck's first encounter with Eddie was so very physical (or rather, Buck made it about that, because that's what it's been for him for almost all of his life). And for that man (Eddie) to turn out to truly appreciate and love Buck for who he is, no matter what his body is like or what “functions” it may serve… that'd just be *chef's kiss*. The perfect reversal of all those other relationships Buck's had, where people got to appreciate his physicality before they could appreciate the person living inside it. Only for Eddie to step into his life (and staying there) to see past that, and immediately see the good and valuable person that's underneath it all. And to love him for it. Like, that would be build-up straight for the heavens.
Tumblr media
This is fine… until it isn't
Yet another way this could go is that they don't go there at all, that the donation is indeed good enough. All swimmers are where they belong, and they are healthy and plenty. But it may still bite Buck on the perky butt. Either because it sinks in for him at long last what it means to be “donor, not dad”, and how he is actually not ready for that. Or because Connor and Kameron bail out. Again, two scenarios come to my mind:
The donation is done, the procedure works, Kameron becomes pregnant. The two thank Buck and bid him farewell. And Buck's left metaphorically standing in the rain, when they make clear what Hen warned him about: That they won't be seeing much of each other again in the future, that they won't stay in touch. Maybe a Christmas card at best. And that's what may crack Buck open like an egg at long last. Because before, it was all just hypothetical. But now it's fact. The proof is there that this is a part of him he'll never see grow, a part of him he'll never know. And he may try his best to be fine with it, just that he isn't.
The donation is done, but it's not needed anymore. Kameron winds up pregnant despite Connor's little team of swimmers. Now that the “pressure” was off of them and on Buck, maybe the swimmers finally had some fun. They are happy as they can be, having a child of their own at long last. And Buck is sure to be happy for them. Maybe he even thinks “dodged a bullet there, upon reflection”. But then it dawns on him. Here we go again. He was not chosen. Despite being the best donor, despite doing everything right, Connor and Kameron didn't really need him in the end. And that might be just as devastating as a scenario wherein he can't donate, or a donation won't do the trick.
Again, both scenarios could very well lead to a serious breakdown in the aftermath. Even though Buck may very well try to keep himself together, to appear to be fine (as Maddie noted once), even though he isn't.
Tumblr media
Because Buck seemingly tries to find happiness through other peoples' happiness (and their knowledge of what constitutes it for them). But we might see Connor and Kameron get their happiness without his help, leaving him none the wiser about what makes him truly happy, or even worse, leaving him unhappier than before.
Yet again, with Buddie goggles on (they are fancy, what can I say?), I think Eddie would be the one person to get through to him in that mess. Buck trying to seem fine, continuing to try to brush it off, even though he's coming apart by the seams. It'd be very much in-tune with how we got several instances by now that had Eddie (as well as the others) notice that Buck's acting off. Be it spacing out or drinking green smoothies (even though Eddie was definitely not just checking the smoothie in that shot, yo).
Tumblr media
They are a (family) unit. Everyone is aware of that, which is why Eddie as well as the others assume he should know what's going on, though he doesn't. If Buck continues to hide things (like the donation), I do believe we might get Eddie forcing his way in at long last. Before, he likely respected Buck's decision (also something something about Eddie respecting Buck's (bodily) autonomy and his decisions in ways his parents never ever did or even could). But if it's no longer about that, Eddie may very well occupy that space again and force his way in, like Buck did when he broke down the door to get to him when he hit rock-bottom.
Buck, the backup plan
One of the many elephants in the room is the discussion of the will. Eddie hasn't brought it back up yet, neither has Buck, but this whole sperm donation arc would be perfect for it to come back full swing. Because here we have Buck as the literal backup plan for Kameron and Connor, who tried to get pregnant but couldn't, so now they are looking at Buck to fill the spot (by filling a cup).
While Eddie was able to drive the point home about Buck being inherently valuable aka not expendable, I do believe we might get some more introspection of Buck. Namely, that his takeaway of the legal guardianship is not just Eddie's trust in him to watch out for what's most important in his life (his son), in the event that something should happen to him. But that it is also: I'm the backup. I'm not the first choice. I'm the choice in case things go wrong.
And if that's what Buck comes out of regarding the sperm donation, that will force Eddie to have that conversation. And it may very well lead to him being forced into some more reflection of his own. Because the other elephant in the room is what it means to him that he named Buck Christopher's legal guardian. What does it mean to him emotionally to rely on someone who blindly with his most important thing, his future? Why is that he can so blindly rely on Buck, when he won't believe in curses, jinxes, or fate? Yes, he got “proof” for Buck's love and care for Christopher. That's what solidified the choice for him, and wherein he continues to be proven right. But. What does it say about you, Eddie? What does it say about you feel for Buck, by entrusting him with that which you love the most in the world? Hm?
To finally end this madness
I think I confused myself and y'all enough with this rambling, so I will now conclude this post with reaffirming my belief in:
Buck Breakdown Era is coming (pun definitely intended).
Eddie will be a key figure in helping Buck navigate that.
This may very well solidify Buddie in the near future.
We have great opportunity to bring the will back into play at long last.
And I have no clue what will become of Buck's lil' swimmers.
And I guess, that's good. For now anyway. Though I guess I might ramble some more. It's what I do, what can I say? Anywho.
Cheers!

Buddie 503 meta
Before I get into things, just a small shoutout to Bobby & Buck’s bond and the progress we see in it: back in s1, when Bobby was going through rough times, Buck bluntly confronted him about it, and he shut everyone out, shoved Buck up against the wall and generally almost went off the deep end. This time, Buck is trying to check what’s going on in a far more gentle way, while Bobby actually tells his team what’s the matter, and they all end up helping him and Athena through it. IDK about you, but I loved this proof of how they’ve both grown during this show.
~
Tumblr media
“If it was Christopher, I’d be losing my mind,” says Eddie, and right away the camera pans to Buck, his co-parent. Chim and Hen are both parents with kids of their own, they could have agreed with or amplified what Eddie was saying, but instead we get a very agitated Buck. Probably because he knows better than anyone else on that team how much a person can love and lose their mind with worry over a child that is like their own even though they’re not biologically related to each other…
Tumblr media
~
Tumblr media
Small moment, but Buck turns specifically to Eddie and even calls him by his name before he points up and indicates he wants to go upstairs, and Eddie’s all “yeah” and joins him without even thinking about it. It parallels the way their battlefield boyfriends bond started in 202, with Eddie leading back then and Buck following him to the higher floors of a collapsed building, no questions asked. I just love this reminder that three years down the line, this bond of theirs is still going so strong!
~
Tumblr media
Right after Hen says to Denny (on the phone), “I can’t wait to see you,” we get a shot of Eddie approaching Buck, who turns to him, smiling wide. Then he teasingly says to Eddie, “I thought you’d be the first one out the door. Christopher know you’re coming?” which shows that Eddie’s earlier remark actually registered more than we might have initially thought, despite how on edge Buck was, providing further evidence that Eddie and Chris always preoccupy him, even more than he shows. Which is already quite a lot.
~
Tumblr media
Thinking about 406, Eddie needed a pep talk from Bobby AND a series of events during their jinxed day, climaxing with the pretend-firefighter, on top of years of internalized expectations about what he’s supposed to do to provide his son with the right kind of family, in order to ask Ana out. But then comes the reverse, which is actually harder (as we see in the painful breakup scene), the reverse which goes against everything Eddie believes he should do for Chris, goes against the fact that Chris has already lost too many people he loves, against every nice moment he has had with this woman for almost a year... and yet he doesn’t need to be pushed into it by an alternative father figure or to have his job reflecting back to him some sudden realization. One chat with Buck, just thinking once about the pain that Buck had felt himself when he was in Ana’s position, and Eddie’s entire perspective changes enough that he’s ready to break up with Ana without any further prompting. On top of that, Eddie actually tells Buck he’s about to do that before he even talks to her, reassuring him that his words didn’t go unnoticed (just like Eddie’s words about Chris earlier in the ep didn’t go unheard). Buck is Eddie’s person, I repeat, in every way that counts, Buck is Eddie’s person. I swear, I feel like I should have a weekly “if this isn’t love, IDK what is” award…
~
Buck’s reaction to Eddie still being there at the end of this shift made me recall ep 316, when Buck had no one to celebrate with after a daring rescue. He was so alone, he ended up not going home at all. Now here he is, at the end of the blackout, thinking he’ll be alone, and pleasantly surprised to see Eddie is still there. Not only that, Eddie then confides in him that he’s listening to Buck and is going to break up with Ana. Then, we see Buck going home. This time, unlike at the end of 316, he’s not supposed to be alone. But… he is. Instead of a partner, all he has is a figure on his screen.
Tumblr media
Now let’s be clear. This show is rooting for women who care greatly about their jobs. This little TV Taylor bit is shown in the same ep which makes it clear that Athena compromises nothing: she cares about her career, her kids, her husband and even her ex-husband and his new bf, she somehow juggles more than her fair share, and even when a deranged criminal tries to tell her that she can’t have it all, that she can either do her job or save her son, she still manages to do both. Plus, Buck himself has been shown to think highly of people’s dedication to their work. So that bit with seeing Taylor on the screen, while Buck sarcastically lets out a “honey, I’m home,” it’s not a criticism of Taylor, it’s more to show that something isn’t working between the two of them, because in this specific relationship, with its specific dynamics and conflicting schedules, he’s lonely. He’s not getting out of it what he needs and if in 316 we saw he didn’t want to be lonely, here we see that Taylor is not an easy fix to that. Just like Eddie felt he needed a “mother” for Chris, but his relationship with Ana wasn’t an easy fix to that either.
Tumblr media
Oliver has stated in an interview before the premiere aired that he was glad the addition of Taylor meant Buck would now have someone to come home to. And then we’re literally shown the exact opposite: in 501 Taylor is present in body, but absent in terms of where her focus lies, in 502 she’s fully absent and in 503 her TV persona is present just long enough and in such a way as to stress her absence. There is an issue in Buck and Taylor’s relationship, and they’re not talking about it, just like Eddie and Ana didn’t up until this ep. I made a parallel gif post out of this moment of both men being lonely because it’s seriously chilling how much these two men’s love lives are interconnected. Not only that, to a great degree we see that if they were just a little less oblivious, they could have seen that they give each other exactly what they each need: Eddie wants a co-parent to Chris that he can also love and that’s exactly Buck, while Buck is desperately longing for a home and a family to belong to, which is what Eddie has been giving him all along. Just kiss already, you morons!
Tumblr media
Speaking of the breakup scene! There’s so much to say about it, including how much I’m in awe that it played exactly into how we’ve been reading the Eddie and Ana relationship all along... We thought Eddie was mostly after this woman because on paper she was perfect to form a family with, and he literally tells her he had an “idea of us” and that it was Christopher’s love for her that dictated him staying in this relationship; we thought Ana might have already figured out that something was wrong between them and indeed, we were now shown she did through Eddie suggesting maybe she should go home (he could have just meant he’s tired and needs to rest after the blackout, but her reaction and attempt to stay anyway say everything about her knowing the breakup was coming, and then she later confirms that when she reveals she had figured out why Eddie was really suffering panic attacks). I’m so happy for Eddie that he finally did something for himself! This was a major step for Eddie, for once in his life choosing his happiness over his sense of duty. At the same time, I find it telling that Eddie trying to send Ana home, while she attempts to stay, creates yet one more connection between the (currently dysfunctional) love lives of Buddie: what tells us that Buck’s relationship isn’t exactly working out is how absent his gf is, while we can see that Eddie’s relationship is about to break down when we realize his gf is too present. See, the show could have had Eddie breaking up with Ana in 503 without bringing Buck into it at all. Why have us see Eddie tell Buck about it when we’re about to watch it play out on our screen shortly after? It could have been just the breakup scene and that’s it. No telling Buck, def no need for that extremely short bit with Buck’s loneliness at home. Instead, we get a sequence of scenes that through their themes are all tied together: Eddie tells Buck he’s breaking up with Ana, then a big hint that Buck’s unhappy with Taylor, and finally Eddie evidently unhappy with Ana and breaking up with her. The inclusion of Buck, the theme of their parallel unhappy relationships and the fact that the specific issues they’re having actually constitute mirror images of each other, it’s like the choices the show has made with this breakup state: “this isn’t just Eddie’s story. It’s Buck’s as well.” Which is, once more, interesting.
~~~ Thank you so much to the incredible @judsonryder for these stunning gifs! Also, you should check out her Buck in orange on his bed parallel, I loved that we both thought of it and IMO, it plays into everything pointed out in this meta and complements it.
Also thank you to all you lovelies for every like, reply, kind tag and of course reblog, I’m always so happy and humbled to see people enjoying these posts, it contributes so much to my motivation! xoxox
Okay but I am not over how Buck was so clearly framed as the "person who had to watch their love almost die right in front him but now has to take the full responsibility of taking care of their son and continue to work all while being a complete and emotional wreck".
Like when Buck had "the hardest job" - Chimney perfectly put it- and went to tell Christopher about Eddie and was trying to reign in his emotional turmoil, once he saw that Eddie had made it through surgery he just could not keep it in anymore. He completely broke down and CHRISTOPHER was the one to comfort BUCK before they both comfort each other. Which I always go absolutely feral about bc even though Buck wears his emotions on his sleeves we all know how he tends to put others first. We saw how he was trying to reign in his own grief so he could be there for Christopher. Because being there for Christopher was the most important thing in Buck's eyes, his own emotions be damned. An yet once that he saw that Eddie survived surgery and was going to be okay, he could not control it anymore.
And then we see him staying at the Diaz house and taking care of Christopher. However, Chris is the one who has to wake up Buck to school. That lil moment reminds me so much of a scene in Practical Magic where Sandra Bullock's character, Sally, is grieving the death of her husband and her daughter tries to wake her up to take her to school while Sally is numb just completely overtaken by her grief. We see Buck be the same way. And even though he does get up and takes care of Christopher and goes to work, we see how not okay he is. so much so that he wants get shot by the sniper as well
Which leads me the integral scene with Buck and Bobby. We all talk about the BLATANT parallels between Buddie and Bathena that this episode beautifully showed, but I gotta talk about it again. Right when Eddie had gotten shot, Bathena had the biggest fight of their marriage. But once they got their feelings out from the fight and was effected by the shooting, they had a honest conversation about what was bothering them. Which hugely consisted of Bobby talking about what it was like to witness what happened to Athena and how it effected him. Which brings me back to the scene with Bobby and Buck. When Bobby tells him that what happened to Eddie wasn't his fault, we get a DIRECT parallel with Buck saying "No but I was just the guy standing there who couldn't do anything about it" to which we get Bobby just staring at him in what seems to be a knowing look mixed shock and recognition. Because that was what he was literally what he was talking about with Athena. In the end of s3 with what happened to Athena and then in this season as well (especially this season) we see Bobby talk about and deal with witnessing HIS WIFE having a traumatic near death experience. Which was blatantly paralleled with Buck's trauma and grief with Eddie. (Two ppl having to witness the person they love most/their spouse almost die.)
But the parallels don't end there folks. No sir.
Not only do we get a hospital scene with both Bathena and Buddie but there are so many parallels in the Bathena hospital scene with Buddie. First we have the obvious of Athena sitting at Bobby side like Buck sat by Eddie's side as they both have emotional conversations. But whereas Buck mentions how he thought it'd been better he had been the one who had gotten shot instead of Eddie, Athena talks about saving Bobby.
Which I would like to point out the parallel of Buck helping Athena save Bobby and his knowing look when she said that it had to be her to save her husband. He understood that need and helped her be the one to save Bobby and not the actual firefighters (of course there's other reasons for Athena being the one like the guy having a gun but still).
But back to the hospital scenes parallels. In Bathena's hospital scene and the second one for Buddie (aka the Will™ scene), both relationships have a certain... shift if you will. Bathena's issues are fully solved and their relationship has grown even more for the better. And with Buddie the shift is also a growth in their relationship, just in a different way.
Because seeing how Eddie getting shot effected Buck and made him think so lowly of himself that he thought it'd be better if he was the one who got shot but also saw how Buck to continued to take care of Christopher despite of it, Eddie decides to finally tell Buck about the will. It's not only a shift of finally acknowledging the will after keeping it a secret for so long but a shift in how they're relationship is going to be for now. Sure, they already planned to always be in each other's lives but this seals it.
And what helps both relationships shift as all is what Athena and Eddie tell Bobby and Buck, respectively Athena tells Bobby that she couldn't let a little fire keep her from saving her partner. That right there is Athena reaffirming that Bobby is her partner, that she acknowledges the issues they had talked about previously about not acting like equal partners and reaffirms that they are fact partners. But then she also shows how much she loves Bobby. He's her partner in every way and she would (and did) walk through literal fire for him (which in LS we saw Judd use an example to show how much he would show Grace how much he loved her). Athena not only reminds Bobby how much she loves him, how she feels, but also tells him what he needed to hear that moment with what they were going through (especially with his lingering issues with what happened to Athena s3).
Now, with The Hospital Scene™ with Buddie, we get Eddie telling Buck about the will (which, given the fact that he kept it hidden for a year ass year indicates that it was a pretty big deal for Eddie to finally tell him) and Eddie does it because of what he also tells him. That Buck, Evan, in fact not expendable. That he knows Buck's perception of himself is that he's expendable, that Buck thought it'd be better if he was the one who got shot.
So how does that parallel the scene with Bathena? Well, Eddie shows Buck just how much he trusts him with Christopher (aka his heart and soul). They are partners already, but this just takes their partnership even further bc yeah, Eddie had already told Buck that 'there's no one else in this world I trust more with my son than you', but this both reaffirms that and takes it a step further. Because he made it legal that he'd rather Buck take care of his son more than his family. This reaffirms his trust in Buck, their partnership. Just like Athena reaffirmed hers and Bobby's partnership. Just like how she showed Bobby just how much she loved him by walking through literal fire for him, Eddie shows how much he loves and cares for Buck by entrusting Buck with the most precious thing in the world to him aka his son. And just like how Athena telling Bobby that is what he needed to hear, Eddie telling Buck about the will and showcasing the biggest insecurity that Buck was going through at the moment, that he's thinks that he's expendable but he's wrong.
Both Eddie and Athena saw how what happened to them effected their partners and they both have these things to help their partners with it (and themselves).
In conclusion, all of this shows the framing of Buck being the "grieving partner who had to deal with watching the love of their almost die". Because almost all of those Bathena parallels dealt with what Bobby had to deal with witnessing Athena almost die and how the aftereffects which directly paralleled with Buck was currently going through in that episode. And the of end episode (as well as Buck's season arc) getting a reaffirmation from his partner and consolation of how what happened to them effected him. Just how Athena did with Bobby.
Say it with me folks: Choices were made.
Thank you for coming to my Tedtalk.
Buck's impulsive relationship decision.
With Maddie, Chimney with Jee leaving town and Eddie leaving the 118, there's no one else for Buck to cling to but Taylor. Of course, there's still Bobby and Hen but we all know how Buck's head works. He doesn't want to bother them. So it only make sense if Buck clings to Taylor Kelly. Or not.
Think of Buck asking Taylor to officially move in with him. He talked about it with the 118 in 5x09 and he thought they're kind of living in together without saying anything. So it's a possible foreshadowing there. But it's not that impulsive if you think. When we say impulsive, it has to be extreme. So Taylor moving in is not an impulsive relationship decision. At least to me.
Think of Buck proposing. Foreshadowing from Buck's 5x10 line No! I'm not doing that (when he asked about Bobby's first Christmas gift to Athena - an engagement ring). It's highly possible that Buck might propose to Taylor. An extremely impulsive decision triggered by a tsunami of emotions parallel to BuckTaylor getting together in 4x14 where Buck was obviously vulnerable. If we connect the wrench that Oliver said from one of his interviews last year, then it could be Taylor rejecting Buck's proposal. Taylor has her own trauma too. Trauma from the murder of her mother that her father gone to confess he killed. So it makes sense that the wrench could be the rejection. And enter Lucy Donato's character, just like with Lena and Eddie in Season 3, Lucy might introduce Buck to something FUN activity to deal with his sh*t and viola Fun Buck is back. Hopefully it's not a whoring Buck phase again.
Think of Buck breaking up with Taylor. That's also an impulsive relationship decision but leaning more towards Buck decision for whatever reason it may be. But BuckTaylor breaking up too early in the season doesn't make sense to me because in 5x10 when Buck gave his beacon gift to Taylor and kissed, clearly it was a step towards a promise. A promise of something good for them. Stability. So yes, I don't think Buck is breaking up with Taylor in 5x11 just because Eddie left the 118 and he's throwing tantrums and taking it out on Taylor. It just doesn't make sense at all.
I couldn't think of any impulsive relationship decision but a marriage proposal. That's just how Buck is sometimes when he's vulnerable. Taylor's rejection decision might bite her again just like in Treasure Hunt when she friendzoned Buck and changed her mind in Survivors that she actually likes Buck and went to him. So the possibility of Taylor coming back to Buck near the finale is possible (if my theory is correct) and Buck finally decides that friendship is all he could offer. Because Buck is tired from everyone leaving him. All these scenarios are an exact parallel on how Buck and Taylor got together in Season 4 and how they're gonna end in 5b. Kind of a parallel too to Eddie/Ana's break up. When Eddie himself initiated the break up because that was the right thing to do for her and for himself. Buck rejecting Taylor coming back to him this time just make so sense. Buck realizing he needs someone who will be there for him through thick and through thin - someone like a TEAM and not feeling like he's walking on eggshells all the time. Realizing what who he truly wants is a different story though.
All these are just my theories. Just basing it on how the writers are obsessed in parallel writing.
Mmm the relationship parallels though. Now I’ve only watched season 4 and 5 once, so I guess bear that in mind.
Eddie’s relationship with Ana was overall very isolating. Eddie rarely talked about Ana. To anyone. To my memory it may have been… twice? Maybe? When he was at work. I think the first time is because Buck, being the best friend that he is, was kinda dragging Eddie. Buck was reading a book on “love languages” and Buck was like, “Hey what’s Ana’s love language?” To which Eddie responded with “Traitor.” Eddie didn’t bring her up, Buck did.
The second time that I can remember was when, in the firehouse loft, Eddie was talking about having to get a suit to someone in Ana’s family having a Christening. His friends/coworkers are pointing out that this is a big step, and Eddie’s like, “What? No. No it’s not.”
(and yeah, Eddie has 1-2 chats with Carla, but I think that was it. though keep in mind Carla did say, “Just make sure you’re following your heart and not Christophers” or something very similar 👀)
The only reason Eddie talks about Ana in any capacity with Buck is 1) when Buck is babysitting Christopher and Eddie comes back from a date with Ana, and then 2) Buck’s (compassionate) confrontation/talk with Eddie that Eddie should break up with Ana.
Ana never meets anyone from Eddie’s job on purpose. It happens kinda by chance during the blackout in season 5 and Ana brings Chris to see Eddie and to bring some… salad (which. that’s a weird and poor choice of food to bring to hungry firefighters, and when there is no power to keep said salads fresh and cold, but anyway). On screen we see Ana meet Ravi (because she has to introduce herself 👀). Buck doesn’t even interact or really acknowledge Ana. Buck and Eddie are too focused on Chris.
Buck would have sort of interacted with Ana when Buck brought Eddie home from the hospital for the surprise party. Before that, it was in passing when Buck came to Eddie in the hospital once he woke up. As far as we can tell, probably no other time. And Buck is Eddie’s best friend (and co-parent).
And who else has had a very isolating relationship? Buck and Taylor.
Taylor only interacts (kinda ignores, really) with Eddie during the Treasure Hunt episode, when she and Eddie are with Buck in Buck's apartment. Then Taylor is weirdly out of place at Athena and Bobby’s house at the end of the episode. Like I know that Taylor had participated in the treasure hunt, but it was still hella weird to see her interact with anyone besides Buck (because she just doesn’t fit).
I think the only other time Taylor remotely interacts with anyone besides Buck is episode 5.10 when Taylor asks Bobby, “Hey which color sweater should I get Buck?”, and then at the Christmas party at the end. (and let’s not forget she and Buck exchange presents behind a giant Christmas tree, in isolation)
*squints* I think the only time Buck even talks about Taylor is the iconic firetruck scene where Buck is - in such an unbothered way - talking about how he thinks Taylor may break up with him.
I can’t recall any other time. Seriously. If Buck did talk about Taylor any other time, I’m gonna (probably rightly) assume it was once.
So… Eddie, let’s be real and honest here, purposefully kept Ana separate from really anyone besides himself and Chris for their entire, jeez, 7-10 month relationship?? And Buck so far has been with Taylor, idk, something like 6 months (maybe more??) by the end of episode 5.10, and he too has purposefully kept Taylor pretty separate from anything else and anyone else in his life.
There may have been a spark at the beginning for Eddie and Ana, but it never developed past that. It’s hella clear Eddie, for most of the relationship, stuck it out because Chris seemed to love Ana. (we never got that confirmation from Chris, and Eddie, bless him, probably never directly asked Chris how he felt, but….anyway.) Eddie asked Ana out because some people around him and society told him, “You need to move on with a nice woman, and get your kid another mom.” Eddie was doing what he thought he should do, not really what he wanted to do. (god it breaks my heart because for most of their relationship Eddie was probably telling himself, “I should want this. This is what I’m supposed to do/want. Love will come eventually.... right??”)
Buck was in (and is still in) a bad and traumatic place when he got together with Taylor. Buck has been slowly spiraling the entirety of season 5 particularly because he feels like so many people are leaving him (and he and Eddie haven’t talked some important shit out). And so Buck is clinging (unhealthily) to Taylor just so he feels like he’s in some capacity not alone.
tldr? While these (hetero) relationships are important for Eddie and Bucks individual growth, it’s been hard to watch. 🙃
Avoiding Buck
Buddie meta. 911 meta. 505. Spoiler.
This is gonna be fast. I just watched the new episode from tonight, and I must say there's a lot of clues for potential foreshadows and also some clues about why Eddie is, for real, acting weird.
Eddie is avoiding me
Okay, now we can speak why visual distance in the balcony between Eddie and Buck.
Eddie is acting weird, is avoiding me.
Even knowing that at the end, it was just Buck's perception that everyone was mad at him, somehow, and that he could be replaced by Ravi in the fam, the subtext was pointing at Eddie being distracted from his role as a paramedic.
The fact that Eddie and Hen weren't in synchrony was mirroring Buck and Ravi's interaction too. Hen, Eddie and Buck didn't work with their usual partners. But also, the distraction was all about Eddie. And that's why the story mixed scenes between Buck saying Ravi: 'If you distract, people die' with Eddie working with Hen in the bathroom.
This, and also some quotes floating around the episode like:
"She was in pain" (from Taylor, explaining why her partner bullied her).
"So much pression!" (From the dude with Narcissus) and his body freezing (related to Eddie panic attacks)
"Harry is acting weird" (from Athena to May, linked to Buck's comment about Eddie.
"I should've switch with him" (from Dante about his wounded younger partner Randall, mirroring Buck and Eddie at the hospital).
"Who's replacing me?" (From Eddie, I would take this one as a foreshadow for incoming Jealous!Eddie).
"What's the ocassion?"
"You, It's all about you." Buck and Taylor's last scene, could be linked to the cause of Eddie's distraction. Eddie's distraction is about Buck.
This leads us to the fact that Eddie is distracted, ruminating about himself (like Narcissus). He needs more time (just like Harry and Maddie). He is trying to keep a distance, avoiding Buck. I just simplified the subtext about Eddie acting weird here.
Under Pressure: Claudette and Buck
Why did they put in the same episode three different dynamics between an expertise leader and their little probie? Because writers love parallels.
So, we had Buck (who was going through a lot of problems with his family and, just like Taylor's bullie, he was pushing Ravi hard, but for a good reason. I mean, he was mad and angry, and he used Ravi and the fact that he should be teaching him with wisdom, as a way out from his problems.)
Jumping to Claudette and May interaction... just like Buck in the previous episode May thought Claudette was pushing her hard (and everyone around her were saying it was her imagination but now we know she was right) and ghe fact that Buck had his reason, and Taylor's partner had her reson too, maybe Claudette has her reason to push May like that. Oh wait she said it. It wasn't a good reason. Lmao. There must be something else there...
And we had Dante and Randall again, willing to switch places with each other. Their team work was more like Buck and Eddie, and completely different to Byck and Ravi or Claudette and May.
Be yourself
To conclude this teacher/pupils interaction. Both of them ended up saying what they had inside their hearts.
"I like to be me" (from Ravi. Being yourself is such a symbolic quote that resume May's feelings but also the end of Eddie's journey while rediscovering his own sexuality.)
And May saying: "You're on my way" is mirroring Ravi too. And who knows? Maybe foreshadowing some behavior from jealous!Eddie towards Taylor?
Hidden
Hidden Ravi who gets a very great advice from Hen. Because Hen knows Buck, and she knows why Buck is acting weird.
Hidden chemicals exploding, and bringing fire and problems.
This symbolism was here because we had Harry exploding his truth. His hidden feelings. "You want me to be honest, right?
So the meaning of HIDDEN FEELINGS was all over the episode, and the fact that they named Narcissus and linked it to Eddie, is talking too about the time he is (or will) take for himself to discover what he really wants. If you put this plus Taylor saying It's all about you, Buck at the end of the episode, well... maybe is the place where Eddie needs to arrive.
Come Back
The song playing at the beginning of the episode was saying: "When you return? When you come back to me?"
It wasn't just talking about Maddie and Chimney, but it was also talking about Buck missing Eddie as his partner and viceversa.
Also Maddie at the end of the episode saying : I'm not ready to come back. Is mirroring Harry and maybe current Eddie.
These all goodbyes and come back situations can be related to The last Fram focused on Taylor's face while she was hugging Buck? Damn... is she ready to mirror Abby and the other girl from supernatural that left Buck? (Yeah, Charlie's fairy girlfriend). Beacuse it looks like concluding the concepto of Taylor putting her job before Buck.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Replacing
Eddie thought he was the problem, but also that was very OOC over there. The thing is, they needed to show the firefam supporting Buck and comforting him. Making him feel loved and appreciated. And telling him everything will be alright because Chim and Maddie will come back.
Buck needed that. He needed good word and the certainty that everything will come back to normal. And they cut from Eddie's "You are stuck with us" to Buck gummy smile. Yeah. He needed that from Eddie too. The personal quote from him just for Buck.
The sensation he had when he found the firefam so comfortable with Ravi and Ravi sitting on Buck's place gave Buck the decision to leave. It was a mix of Jealousy (mirroring Eddie as a foreshadow?) And sadness to be replaced.
Ravi will replace me.
Eddie is replacing Chimney.
And who's replacing me? Eddie is placing over the table the fact that everyone is in the same boat there but also, how wrong was Buck. But don't forget the importance of this last quote from Eddie, if we will be able to see the interaction between Buck/Taylor and Eddie in a future.
"Everything is broken, and because of me."
This quote said by Buck is so meaningful of how demaged he feels inside due to his family of blood. Everything I touch it breaks. It's a common trope, if we can call it like that, between heroes. They also need the chosen family showing them they're worthy. And don't forget about the worried boyfriend who won't let his babe to feel sad or miserable.
Miscellaneous:
Two things that are eating my brains:
1)
The punch from Chimney to Buck
The punch from Harry to that boy.
The slap in the mouth from Athena to Harry.
Are these foreshadows from a big punch/slap/hit in the incoming episodes?
2)
Throats being cut.
Eddie's blood spot on his neck
Randall with that saw carved on his throat/neck
Are these related to 507? With Eddie being threatened by a knife on his neck or something like that during the hostage situation? We'll see.
To Conclude:
This episode settled a lot of clues for the incoming stories.
It had a little of forced OOC to point at an idea and give the ending of supporting firefam for Buck.
It's also talking, very subtly, about Eddie theorical meditation about himself and his sexuality.
Hope you liked my rants. See you next week.
I’ve been thinking about the significance of dispatch being the thing to go up in flames.
Dispatch being the connection point between those who need help and those who come to provide the help and how this season has this underlying sense of dispatch being fractured (in much the same way that the fire house has been feeling fractured up to now). I’m actually really interested in the way that the firehouse break up has been loud and in our faces while the dispatch break up has been much quieter and more subtle. reflecting the way the two aspects of first response are viewed by the general public - we don’t think about first responders including those people who answer the phones and get us the help we need - and that actually if dispatch isn’t there the emergency services can’t do their job.
What we’ve seen this season is how vital Sue Blevins is to the dispatch family - all the things that have happened at dispatch have only happened in Sues absence.  The only external force to impact dispatch this season (so far) was when it was initially hit by the black out - when peoples phones start dialling 911 and Josh was in charge!  Josh is always in charge when we get anything related to Claudette and her bullying/ domineering behaviours and it is Josh who reprimands Eddie for jumping in on a 911 call (and doing it in a childish way).
Sue however is like the glue - all the happy family like scenes we have in dispatch this season have involved sue in some way and I don’t think its a coincidence that Sue is the one that Sends Athena round to Phylis’s house in 5x10 - which ends up being a conversation about the glue that holds a family together and the need to build bridges etc.
We know Sue is going to be the one who helps begin building bridges between May and Claudette and its going to be interesting to see how she fares in the dispatch fire - does she get out easily, does she save others, does she co-ordinate help etc?!
I’ve also been thinking how destroying that link between those in nedd and those helping is highly symbolic for other reasons - Maddie returning now she’s got the help she needed, May coming into her own and becoming the queen of common sense and wisdom. But the one I’ve been thinking about most is the fact that Eddie is working there - he went from being the one to provide the help to working as part of the link - the connection point at a time when he has cut his own links to his family - burnt his bridges and self sabotaged - but in a way that means he’s remained constantly aware of what he’s missing out on.
I’ve been contemplating the fact that we seem to be in a situation where dispatch adjacent was the only place Eddie could end up - because the dispatch season arc is reflecting his own arc more closely than the 118 season arc - my main reason for feeling like this is that the 118 doesn’t seem to be reaching a breaking point and there are some interesting parallel beats that are being hit by bot hEddie and dispatch.
Dispatch has been stretched and pushed by both internal and external forces its been fracturing but holding itself together - much like we’ve seen Eddie doing. Then there is this May and Claudette story - which if you boil it down to basics isn’t just about bullying - its about questioning ones abilities and allowing some one else to influence you - its about choosing to stand up for yourself, for your own wants and needs - something Eddie hasn’t been doing - he’s been deferring to what Christopher needs and wants without reference to his own needs and wants.
Both dispatch and Eddie are going to come to abrupt breaking points - Eddie’s has happened - him finally hitting meltdown and smashing up his room while we know dispatch is going to go up in flames. Its interesting that the dispatch fire is going to be the thing that bonds May and Claudette and Eddies breakdown may very well be the thing that gets Eddie and Christopher (and Buck) to really talk and bond and understand each other more deeply than before.
Neither will be the same after but both will rise from the ashes and grow into something new and better and both breaking points will ultimately be the thing thing that brings the families back together within their respective arcs - the culmination being Eddie returning home to the 118 - his chosen family - making them whole again, while dispatch sees its missing member - Maddie return (who is also paralleling hard with Eddie and her arch is tied into the dispatch one as well) making them whole again.
I honestly have know idea what this even is - do I even make sense or am I just rambling along and talking jibberish??!!
So just finished and I want to say my critique is different because I fully was one of the people who thought this would be heart racing danger, so I expected big huge messy emotions. But right away I had to laugh because I think it was a deliberate directional choice to not make us afraid. Legit for any of of them. It was a story momentum for Probie, Hen and Eddie. So just saying once I realized Buck and Eddie were in actual control my perspective changed how I viewed it.
My heart legit broke for Eddie because he is going through something. A meeting of like his worlds/desires?? Because it was clear the whole story was to put Eddie with this Dad, I mean we never even got a reason why the other dude was helping him. I didn't even feel Boddy Athena intense energy. It was like the writers needed a situation and found the laziest way to make it happen. I'm not even mad at it just stating why I wasnt pissed at the lack of over dramatics.
Also Taylor has a motive I just dont totally get it yet. She is inadvertently coming after one of the 118 but the means and how I'm not sure. I saw a prior anon mention Athena so now I'm worried what footage she has of her. Honestly it could just be naming the Dad who knows, (that would be a huge portrayal to Eddie) but that damn is about to break.
Anyways if you ship Buddie this should have been a good episode IMHO because poor Eddie, something is brewing. He's clearly compartmentalizing feelings. I think we have a few interesting episodes after the Halloween one coming.
Also does anyone know why they switched them? Odd choice.
yeah I mean this is definitely the most buddie-coded episode so far in the season in my opinion. its more subtle, so you have to kind of analyze and dig but there was a lot of parallels comparisons to buck and eddie and the hostage guy.
i mean eddie is clearly going through something but we just don’t know what. im hoping that they touch on in the next couple of episodes. (my optimism tells me that he is finally accepting himself and his feelings towards buck and is having trouble compartmentalizing his feelings because he’s afraid that it would push it buck away and he doesn’t wanna do that to chris.)
and yeah i definitely think taylor is suspicious right now but I am going to keep an open mind because I’m trying to give her the benefit of the doubt even though she doesn’t really deserve it after what she did in season two.
and all we know about the episodes which was that some scenes from the halloween episode needed to be re-filmed but we don’t know if that’s the only reason or something else happened
i also am happy to see some advancement in the storyline for hen and chimney. i miss all of the characters in general and want to see where they’re taking their stories the season.
I am really tired and I have been answering asks all day so forgive me if this is a little bit of a half assed reply but thanks for analysis! i haven’t really seen many people talk about their explicit opinions about this episode so thank you
Reasons/signs why buddie is likely to go canon
Hey, Nonnie! Oooo, great question, okay I've got to think about this.
I would say the main reason why Buddie is likely to go canon is because both Buck's and Eddie's stories are so intertwined, it only makes sense for them to get together. Not just as family but also romantically. They are literally the answer to what they're each looking for in a partner. Nothing else makes sense though the show has had quite a few opportunities to veer off of this course for a while now but they haven't taken them, and instead seemed to have double downed on it, getting us closer and closer to Buddie canonization.
As for signs, hmm...
Well, other than seeing Eddie pining for Buck and how much we're getting closer to that portion of the story where it will be confirmed in some way, they've given us more than a few. But I'll pick the main ones:
1) Eddie and Ana breakup - a previous nonnie mentioned how Ana is essentially the perfect woman for Eddie and I agree, she's good on paper (in season 5 at the least), which we saw being shown in that firehouse scene in 5x02. There is literally no reason for these two not to stay together (except for it not being what Eddie wants and their severe lack of chemistry/love). Christopher loves her and from what he said, he obviously expects that a marriage is in the future. She would be a good support for Eddie, she's empathetic and she's always reaching out to him and Christopher physically. She also would be a great partner, not just with Christopher, but also in certain situations like we see in the firehouse scene. She immediately took charge of the situation when it appeared Eddie wasn't going to when it came to Ravi and sort of made it a little easier until the wife mention. And then she rolls with it when Eddie asks Ravi to give her a tour so he can make his escape. She's perfect on paper. So for them to show us this, this late in the game, only to turn around and discard it soon after because it's what's triggering Eddie's panic attacks due to it not being what he wants...to me, that's a huge sign we're heading to a Buddie canonization. Especially, when Ana has been paralleled and contrasted with Buck several times during the short time of her relationship with Eddie. Especially since Buck has to be the one to tell Eddie to let Ana go and not hurt her if she's not what he wants. Especially when for a second there, it became The Buckley Diaz family vs The Flores Diaz family and we know who won out in that round in Eddie's eyes and which one he felt more at ease with.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2) The parallels - I know we always talk about these but I believe this is one of the most telling signs that we're heading to canon Buddie. Buck has been paralleled to Chim, Hen, Bobby, Athena, Karen, and of course Maddie. Eddie, the same. Not to mention, Buck and Eddie have been continuously paralleled and contrasted to the romantic partners in their lives, both past and present. With all of this foundation being built, with all of these direct parallels and contrasts, there's no way Buddie isn't going canon. They've been weaving this story way too intricately for it to be loosened or unraveled or to start weaving something new for one of the guys or both now.
3) The other relationships around Buddie - time and time again, Buddie has been linked/paralleled/connected to the other canon relationships in the show: Bathena, Henren, and Madney. Not to mention that they've done this within the context of romance, such as the 3x13 scene where Eddie asks Buck if he wants to come over. Which Buck declines and then they go about having Hen confirm she and Karen have a date night, then Bobby has one with Athena, and then Chim wants to spend the night with Maddie, so Buck ends up alone. And they've also done it a few times in framing:
Tumblr media
You have Bathena and Henren on one side, and Madney on the other, with Buddie in between. Not only are they trying to throw strong hints at us but there's literally no reason for them to keep doing this if they didn't plan to make Buddie romantic at some point and endgame (especially when paralleled with Bathena and Henren). If they wanted to only display the deep partnership and friendship, the only relationship they should be paralleling/keep getting connected to is Chim and Hen's partnership/friendship.
4) The stand-ins - each time there seems to be some sort of separation between the two, physically or emotionally or both, they've opted to use stand-ins for both characters. The biggest examples are Lena for Eddie during the lawsuit arc (standing in for Buck), Marjan and TK in the crossover (standing in for both Buck and Eddie respectively) Ana (besides being who Eddie felt he needed to move on with, she's a stand-in for Buck in 4x14), and Taylor (standing in for Eddie in 4x14). The fact that they use stand-ins, to me, is a very big clue. These two have come to rely on each other that much that the story/writers need to provide them with stand-ins, usually in the form of women (and TK, a confirmed gay character who mistakenly thinks Buck is hitting on him at the end of the crossover). They also use smaller characters in the story to be stand-ins for Buck and Eddie as well, in certain situations (not all of them women) and aren't necessarily provided for the other character to interact with, i.e. Corey the gunman in 4x08 was a stand-in for Buck (so was Mr. Nowels), Brian the fake firefighter in 4x06 was a stand-in for Eddie, the guy Eddie beat up over the parking space in 3x05 was a stand-in for Buck, etc. To me, that's a very big tell.
5) 5x01 relationship link - they purposely showed us that there is something missing in each relationship for each guy, even though they have these seemingly perfect partners for these points in these guys' lives and where they're currently at. And it revolved around the physical. For Buck and Taylor, it was sex on the surface but had more to do with the emotional, since we saw Taylor was determined to find the answers about what happened that day than focus on Buck. For Eddie and Ana, we get a hint that their relationship has progressed physically by a comment and reaction, then we see Eddie having a panic attack, but underneath it all, he was triggered by the store clerk mistaking Ana as Christopher's mother, and there is a lot more since Dr. Salazar intimates that Eddie is repressing the anxiety aka something emotional. Not only is that a sort of vague parallel between both relationships, but it's also showing us that there is definitely something missing from both of these dynamics for both guys. (which is why it doesn't surprise me in the least that Eddie is able to talk candidly with Buck in 5x02 and vice versa)
6) Eddie and Buck only seem to be able to be truly vulnerable with one another - this to me, is just a given at this point. Not that we haven't seen Buck be vulnerable with Bobby or even Maddie (I would say Maddie and Eddie are the two people who know Buck the best out of everyone and who Buck can truly be vulnerable with, while Bobby and Buck provide that same dynamic for Eddie), but there's definitely an exclusive window into Buck that Eddie has, with and without Buck's invitation. Eddie sees Buck for who he is and vice versa. To have this unique part of their emotional relationship exist, and then it's contrasted to all of the romantic partner in their lives who can never seem to have that access, is another big sign to me. They could have kept it strictly as two friends, two partners, who just get each other, and that's that. And then eventually a romantic partner would come along for one guy or both who would after a time (and possibly approval from the other, depending how cliche and trope-y they would have wanted to get) gotten that access as well. But they didn't. They've made this vulnerability pretty much exclusive with the exception of Maddie and FireDad.
7) Show making Buckley Diaz family official through legal guardian reveal - if there was ever a big neon sign flashing (without showing us Eddie's feelings) that pointed the way to Buddie, this is it. Is it possible that two friends, two partners, two brothers, could have also had this development without any future romantic implications? Sure. But that's not how it went down. If it did, we would have had the reveal a lot sooner or happening when Eddie first woke up or happening at another time when Eddie is in danger or wounded again (like this alleged hostage situation coming up). But instead they chose this very specific timing and context of when Eddie chose to reveal this information to Buck. Because it absolutely is not about their friendship or Eddie's concern of what will happen to Chris should he not be around anymore. He doesn't even know about the crane climb (at least that we saw). But he chose to reveal it right then because Buck had said it would have been better for Chris if he had been shot. Not to mention they showed us Eddie's reaction to this line:
Tumblr media
Eddie needed Buck to know that he matters to Christopher, to him. That he isn't expendable. And Christopher 99.9% of the time is synonymous with Eddie. And Eddie uses the mention of Christopher as a shield. The legal guardian reveal was all about Eddie, and Buck. And the show purposely chose to put it in this context and within this dynamic and timing when they didn't have to, in order to keep the lines clear. Instead, they double-downed on the Buckley Diaz family and how it would lead us into the next season, and how it would affect these two specifically, whether that be the dynamic at work or outside of it or both.
There are many other signs but these are the top 7 off of the top of my head. Buddie's going canon. There's no two ways about it. And while the relationship may not happen instantly, a conversation (and realization) is definitely due to happen this season. Eddie's feelings are all but glaringly obvious enough that they're written in Sharpie on his forehead and I don't see how Buck can remain oblivious to this fact much longer (or to his own feelings), whether that's him seeing it himself or someone else pointing it out to him.
I hope I was able to answer your question thoroughly, Nonnie! Thank you for the ask! Hope you have a wonderful rest of your weekend!!! <3
Perhaps I’m going to ruin it. However, I just …we keep wishing and wanting Buck to really take this legal guardian thing and run with it. Give him heavy involvement with Christopher all around and taking on complete and total responsibility like the other spouse/parent would except…we have to remember this is only if Eddie dies. The wording he used “if I didn’t make it, Christopher would be taken care of. By you.” So I imagine the will is amended with similar wording with an emphasis on if “If I die care of my son…” If anything this will change Buck’s mindset. He might start thinking things through and realize he has people who love him and he doesn’t always have to put himself on the line in order to protect them. “You act like you’re expendable. But you’re wrong.”
Do I believe that Buck has been and will continue to do what he already does with and for Christopher? Yes, he’ll still go on co-parenting as he has been but within limited parameters and always with a look of “is that okay” towards Eddie. Still always checking with Eddie. Of course, one day I hope it becomes an even more joint task and they realize how they feel about each other. One day they don’t think of being with other people because the two of them with Christopher is enough. Makes me think of “good cop, bad cop” and also Chim saying, “Buck has a harder job tonight.” Even the fire fam knows it’s Buck who will go to Christopher. The responsibility falls to him no matter what. (Also, my scatterbrain diverted from the whole point. I mean to say that Buck isn’t necessarily Christopher’s legal guardian. Like he couldn’t sign for a field trip or some shit. He only could do that if Eddie didn’t make it because now full guardianship is legally given to him. The most he can do is pick up and drop off Chris at school if he’s on the list, you know. And of course, he’s probably already an emergency contact so…we also know Chris finds his way to Buck when he’s super angry or will call him even. Memorized number or is it on a speed dial landline (4x03)?
Now for more scatterbrained thoughts…
For me what the will change feels like is an indirect confession of love from Eddie and also a reason for Buck to realize he needs to stop thinking of himself as expendable. There’s a difference between thinking I’m worthless so I should’ve been shot and thinking of myself as a shield or protector of friends/family. Think of Bobby who we know isn’t perfect but generally he’s think ahead and then acts and most often it’s for the team, it’s being the shield/protector. Buck is just that too, but he still needs to learn how to think things through before reacting. Putting himself in the line of danger is not the right decision. Bobby was trapped (shot before he could do anything) by the sniper in the building and he wasn’t going to let the sniper have a go at anyone else so he tried to talk him down, refusing to call in any firefighters or even say he was injured. Cue Athena walking through fire to get her husband. Wait a second. Both Eddie and Bobby were shot? Buck got Eddie to safety, still feels guilty. Athena comes to Bobby’s recuse, but he assumed that wouldn’t happen because they’re sort of “fighting.” Wait, Eddie gets shot in front of Buck we have the scene of rushing him to the hospital. Athena walks through fire to save her husband, calls for medics…wait, what!? We have the will change talk between Buck and Eddie and then the “I had to save my partner” talk with Bobby and Athena (in hospital beds). Are these parallels!? Why?
Anyway…with what happened to Eddie and then with the reveal of the will change, I think the statement from Bobby, “Buck will always be Buck. You’re never going to change” well, it will change.
Because Evan…
Buck has someone to live for and that someone is mostly Christopher but it also indirectly includes:
