Over the next few years, things began to change. You noticed the distance between you and Rain growing, the once-strong bond you shared slowly fraying like the worn-out edges of an old blanket.
It wasn't something you could put your finger on at first, just a creeping sense of separation that settled in your chest whenever you caught sight of her from across the room.
You'd see her more often now with the colony kids, laughing and chatting, a bright spark among the worn and weary.
At first, you were happy to see her connecting with others, but then you realized she was spending more time with them than she was with you.
It hurt, but you understood. She needed friends her own age, a distraction from the hardships that seemed to hover over all of your lives like a dark cloud.
You were about 19, maybe 20, when everything took a darker turn. You'd been freelancing for a while—small jobs that kept you under the radar, nothing too flashy.
That was until a desperate small business, teetering on the edge of collapse, sought your skills.
You were hesitant, but the pay was decent, and the work seemed straightforward enough: hacking into some old systems, unlocking what was needed to keep them afloat.
And it was a success. Or at least, you thought it was.
But success came with consequences. You didn't realize you’d been tracked, not until someone with far more power than you could fathom found you.
They came to you with an ultimatum, their voice smooth but with an undercurrent of steel that sent a chill down your spine: work for them, take on any job they needed, or they’d turn you over to Weyland-Yutani.
You knew what that meant. You'd seen enough to understand the company didn’t tolerate dissent, especially from a former prodigy with a name they hadn't forgotten.
That's when your life took a dangerous path. You agreed to their terms, the fear of what could happen if you didn't outweighing any hesitation.
The jobs started simple but quickly escalated. Hacking turned into more complex coding, cracking into secure systems, sometimes even building or reprogramming androids and bots—a skill you honed under Marcus's watchful eye.
The pay was good, better than anything you could have made in the colony, and for a while, it seemed worth it.
But it wasn't just the money that kept you going. The promise of protection from other dangerous groups, black-market dealers who might see your skills as a threat, was a lifeline you couldn’t ignore.
To protect Rain and her family, your small, adopted family, you began staying out later, sometimes disappearing for days at a time. At first, Marcus and his wife were upset, worried about your well-being and what could be keeping you away.
Rain, especially, couldn't understand why you'd suddenly become so distant, why you weren't around as much. Her confusion and hurt were plain to see, and it tore at you in ways you couldn't explain.
Marcus eventually eased up on the questioning after he found you one night in the throes of a particularly bad meltdown. You'd come home after a job went sideways—something you hadn't anticipated, a system you couldn't crack in time, and the fallout had been brutal.
You couldn't tell Marcus what had happened, not exactly, but he didn’t push. He simply sat with you in the dim light of the kitchen, his presence a steady, calming force as you tried to pull yourself back together.
"If you ever need to talk," he'd said softly, his voice thick with the kind of understanding only someone who’d lived through hardship could have, "I'm here. You know that, right?"
You nodded, though you knew you'd never burden him with the weight of what you were involved in. This was a part of your life you'd chosen to keep to yourself, a dark secret that had become a necessary evil. And even though you trusted Marcus, you couldn't bring yourself to let him in on this one truth.
But life has a cruel way of taking away the things you hold dear, doesn't it?
Just a few weeks after your 21st birthday, Marcus and his wife fell ill. The colony's cold, damp air had always been harsh, but the pneumonia they caught from the mines was unlike anything they'd faced before.
You watched helplessly as the sickness took hold, their bodies weakened by years of toil in the toxic conditions of Jackson Star. It was like watching your own parents waste away all over again—a slow, painful decline that left you feeling powerless and lost.
Rain was a mess, her normally bright, fiery spirit dulled by the looming reality of losing her parents. She tried to stay strong, but you could see the cracks forming in her armor.
You did everything you could to help, taking over the household duties, scrounging for medicine, anything to ease their suffering, but deep down, you knew there was nothing that could be done.
The disease had sunk its claws in too deep.
One night, as you sat by Marcus's bedside, his breathing ragged and shallow, he reached out, his hand weak but insistent. You took it, holding on tightly, just like you had with your own father all those years ago. The weight of his grip was lighter than you remembered, his strength all but gone.
"Y/N…" he rasped, his voice barely audible over the sound of his labored breaths. "Take care of her… take care of Rain…"
Tears welled in your eyes as you nodded, unable to speak. "I will..." you whispered, your voice breaking. "...I promise."
He smiled faintly, a shadow of his old, warm smile. "Good… that's… good…"
You stayed with him until the end, just as you had with your parents. And when the time came, when the house fell silent except for the soft sobs of Rain and the hollow echo of your own grief, you knew that once again, you were left holding onto the pieces of a shattered life.
And this time, you would do whatever it took to keep Rain safe.
No matter what.
Tumblr media
Three years had passed since your adoptive parents' death, and in that time, life had only grown more complicated. You returned from your latest job—a grueling five-day ordeal that left you exhausted and hollow inside.
This time, you'd been tasked with hacking into Weyland-Yutani's high-security network, retrieving files that exposed a chilling directive: in moments of crisis, their synthetics were programmed to prioritize the company's assets over human lives, all under the guise of logical probability.
The job paid well, enough to secure you and Rain's needs for the next six months, but the price was high.
The screams and pleas of employees who’d been betrayed by the very machines meant to protect them echoed in your mind, refusing to let go. You tried to shake the images away as you made your way through the dim, narrow corridors of the small home you shared with Rain.
Entering the room, you found her curled up on your bed, her small frame wrapped around your pillow, her face buried into the soft fabric as she slept. You approached quietly, the soft sound of your footsteps barely audible over the hum of the heating unit.
Sitting on the edge of the bed, you reached out and gently brushed your fingers through her hair. Rain instinctively leaned into your touch, a small sigh escaping her lips as she snuggled deeper into your pillow.
A soft smile tugged at your lips, though your heart felt heavy. Watching her sleep so peacefully, so unaware of the horrors you'd just witnessed, was both a comfort and a curse.
You knelt beside her, continuing to stroke her hair, trying to silence the panicked screams still echoing in your mind. Just as you began to lose yourself in the motion, Rain stirred.
Groggily, she opened her eyes, blinking away the remnants of sleep. She gave you a tired smile. "Hey," she mumbled, her voice thick with sleep.
"Hey," you replied softly, your smile widening despite the weight on your chest.
Rain's brow furrowed slightly as she looked up at you, sensing that something was off. "What's wrong?" she asked, her voice a little clearer, more alert.
You shook your head, stilling your hand. "Nothing," you murmured, trying to keep your voice steady. "Just go back to sleep, Rain. It's late."
She hesitated but nodded, a yawn escaping her lips as she turned over, curling up again. "Okay... But could you look over Andy?” she asked sleepily, her voice trailing off. "His eyes... something's wrong with them. He's already in the workshop, in sleep mode, waiting."
"Sure, I'll take care of him," you promised, leaning down to press a gentle kiss to her forehead. She mumbled a thank you, already drifting back to sleep as you stood up and quietly made your way out of the room.
You moved through the darkened house, your steps light and measured to avoid waking Rain. Despite the pitch-black surroundings, you knew every inch of this place—every loose floorboard, every creaky door hinge.
It wasn't hard to navigate to the small workshop in the back, a space that had become both a sanctuary and a battlefield for your mind.
Without turning on the main lights, you reached for the small lamp on your workbench, flicking it on and casting a soft, warm glow over the room.
In the corner, covered by a sheet, was Andy. You pulled a rolling stool behind you as you approached, removing the sheet with a practiced motion to reveal the android beneath.
Andy's face was serene, almost peaceful in the dim light. The shadows cast by the lamp danced across his features, highlighting the sharp lines of his cheekbones and the soft curve of his lips.
Despite knowing he was a machine, you couldn't help but admire the craftsmanship—the subtle blend of human and synthetic, the way his face seemed almost too real.
You reached out, gently cupping the side of his face, your fingers tracing the contours of his jaw. His synthetic skin was cool to the touch, but familiar. Your hand moved to the side of his neck, pressing the small port to awaken him.
The change was immediate. Andy's body tensed, his right hand shooting up to grab your wrist with surprising speed and strength. His eyes flickered to life, emitting a soft glow in the darkness. "Shh, it's okay," you whispered softly, not pulling away. "Sorry to startle you."
At the sound of your voice, Andy's grip loosened, his eyes quickly focusing on you. "Y/N," he said, his voice calm and even. "You're back."
You offered him a small smile before turning to grab your diagnostics tablet. "I've only been gone for five days," you said, connecting the tablet to the port in his neck and starting the diagnostic test.
Andy blinked as if you'd made the dumbest statement ever. "Five days is more than enough time for someone to be missed."
You giggled softly at his matter-of-fact tone. "Thanks, Dee." You glanced at the screen, focusing on the data streaming in. "Rain mentioned you've been having issues with your eyes. Can you tell me more about that?"
Andy's eyes flickered for a moment before he answered. "I... I can still see, but my vision sometimes become foggy. It affecting my ability to accurately assess situations and objects."
You nodded thoughtfully, continuing to run the diagnostics as you chatted with him, your fingers moving deftly across the tablet. "I see... We'll get it sorted. So, how have things been while I was gone?"
Andy remained still, his gaze fixed on you. "Rain and I have missed you."
A warm smile tugged at your lips. "I've missed you both too." You paused, reflecting on how much had changed since the day you found Andy in that scrapyard.
Your perception of synthetics had shifted over the years.
You'd never treated them as mere machines, but having one as a constant companion had blurred the lines between man and machine.
Despite knowing he wasn't human, Andy's human-like qualities were something you cherished. They made him unique, almost... alive in a way that was hard to define.
The soft beep from the tablet pulled you back to the present. You looked down, seeing the source of the issue on the screen. "Ahh," you sighed, turning the tablet to show Andy.
The screen was filled with lines of code, complex and unintelligible to most. To anyone else, or even to an android whose primary function wasn’t related to programming, this would have been complete nonsense. But since bringing Andy back online, you'd made it your mission to always explain everything you did to him, guiding him through each process.
Part of you believed he deserved to know, a small gesture of respect for the android who had become so much more than just a machine.
But there was another reason, a darker thought that lingered in the back of your mind: the possibility that one day, you might not be around to help him.
You wanted Andy to understand his own systems and the intricacies of his coding—not just to function but to ensure he could take care of himself if the worst were ever to happen.
Andy studied the code intently, his synthetic mind processing the information with an almost human-like concentration. "There is an error in the environmental calibration subroutine," he noted, identifying part of the issue correctly.
You chuckled, impressed. "Close, Dee. But, you got most of it right." You pointed to a specific line of code. "This here—it needs an update. The last patch didn't account for the increased levels of smog and soot in the colony's air. It's affecting your visual processors."
Routine set in as you continued to work. "What is your directive, Andy?" you asked out of habit, fingers moving swiftly to implement the necessary changes.
Andy responded almost instantly. "To do what's best for Rain."
A second passed, and then he spoke again, his voice softer. "Do you ever think about changing the directive?"
You paused, fingers hovering over the screen as you looked up at him, puzzled. "What are you talking about, Dee?"
Andy hesitated for a moment, his eyes studying you with a strange intensity. "The day Marcus uploaded my directive, I remember asking him if the girl standing above me when I first came back online was Rain. He to me it was you, Y/N."
You laughed lightly, trying to lighten the mood. "Did you ask him if I was a great hacker too?"
Andy's expression remained serious, his voice steady. "No. I asked him, 'But what about what's best for Y/N?'"
Your fingers stilled on the tablet, and for a moment, you didn't know what to say. You looked up at Andy, his face soft with an expression you couldn't quite place.
A small, self-deprecating laugh escaped your lips. "What's best for me? Ha, I've never been too good at figuring that out. If I had a directive for myself, it'd probably be something like 'make everything harder than it needs to be.'"
Andy let out a low hum, his gaze unwavering. "Even if it's not my directive, just know, I'll still want what's best for you."
You blinked back the tears welling in your eyes, quickly turning your focus back to the tablet. "Thanks, Andy," you whispered, your voice barely audible. You continued your work in silence, the weight of his words settling over you like a heavy blanket.
Andy's head tilted slightly, his eyes zeroing in on your face as if committing this moment to memory. "Of course, Y/N... anytime."
The remainder of the time was spent in a comfortable silence as you finished updating his code. You leaned back with a sigh, setting your tablet down beside you. "How are you feeling now, Andy?"
The android paused for a moment, then said, "Well, it's better than before. But if my vision gets any worse, I guess you could say... my future won't be looking 'too bright'."
You just blinked at him, taken aback by the unexpected joke, before laughter bubbled out of your lips. "Was that a 'dad joke'? Where did you learn that from?"
Andy's eyes seemed to brighten, and he sat up a little straighter. "I learned it while walking Rain to work the other day," he explained. "I like them."
You chuckled, warmth spreading through your chest at the thought of Andy picking up on humor. "Well, I'll be sure to learn some more and tell you. We can make it a little hobby between the two of us."
Andy nodded earnestly, his expression softening. "I'd like that. Sharing experiences can strengthens bonds."
You couldn't help but smile at his earnestness. "You're right about that, Dee. We can even start a collection of the worst jokes we can find."
For a moment, the room felt lighter, the shadows less heavy. Andy's presence, his attempts at humor, made the grim reality outside these walls feel a little less suffocating.
It was moments like this that reminded you why you fought so hard to keep your small world safe, even when everything else seemed so uncertain.

The eye-popping scandal surrounding the Trump cabinet’s accidental invitation to The Atlantic’s editor in chief to join a text-message group secretly planning a bombing in Yemen has rolled into its third day, and that controversy now has a name: SignalGate, a reference to the fact that the conversation took place on the end-to-end encrypted free messaging tool Signal.
As that name becomes a shorthand for the biggest public blunder of the second Trump administration to date, however, security and privacy experts who have promoted Signal as the best encrypted messaging tool available to the public want to be clear about one thing: SignalGate is not about Signal.
Since The Atlantic’s editor, Jeffrey Goldberg, revealed Monday that he was mistakenly included in a Signal group chat earlier this month created to plan US airstrikes against the Houthi rebels in Yemen, the reaction from the Trump cabinet’s critics and even the administration itself has in some cases seemed to cast blame on Signal for the security breach. Some commentators have pointed to reports last month of Signal-targeted phishing by Russian spies. National security adviser Michael Waltz, who reportedly invited Goldberg to the Signal group chat, has even suggested that Goldberg may have hacked into it.
On Wednesday afternoon, even President Donald Trump suggested Signal was somehow responsible for the group chat fiasco. “I don't know that Signal works,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “I think Signal could be defective, to be honest with you.”
The real lesson is much simpler, says Kenn White, a security and cryptography researcher who has conducted audits on widely used encryption tools in the past as the director of the Open Crypto Audit Project: Don’t invite untrusted contacts into your Signal group chat. And if you’re a government official working with highly sensitive or classified information, use the encrypted communication tools that run on restricted, often air-gapped devices intended for a top-secret setting rather than the unauthorized devices that can run publicly available apps like Signal.
“Unequivocally, no blame in this falls on Signal,” says White. “Signal is a communication tool designed for confidential conversations. If someone's brought into a conversation who’s not meant to be part of it, that's not a technology problem. That's an operator issue.”
Cryptographer Matt Green, a professor of computer science at Johns Hopkins University, puts it more simply. “Signal is a tool. If you misuse a tool, bad things are going to happen,” says Green. “If you hit yourself in the face with a hammer, it’s not the hammer’s fault. It’s really on you to make sure you know who you’re talking to.”
The only sense in which SignalGate is a Signal-related scandal, White adds, is that the use of Signal suggests that the cabinet-level officials involved in the Houthi bombing plans, including secretary of defense Pete Hegseth and director of national intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, were conducting the conversation on internet-connected devices—possibly even including personal ones—since Signal wouldn’t typically be allowed on the official, highly restricted machines intended for such conversations. “In past administrations, at least, that would be absolutely forbidden, especially for classified communications,” says White.
Indeed, using Signal on internet-connected commercial devices doesn’t just leave communications open to anyone who can somehow exploit a hackable vulnerability in Signal, but anyone who can hack the iOS, Android, Windows, or Mac devices that might be running the Signal mobile or desktop apps.
This is why US agencies in general, and the Department of Defense in particular, conduct business on specially managed federal devices that are specially provisioned to control what software is installed and which features are available. Whether the cabinet members had conducted the discussion on Signal or another consumer platform, the core issue was communicating about incredibly high-stakes, secret military operations using inappropriate devices or software.
One of the most straightforward reasons that communication apps like Signal and WhatsApp are not suitable for classified government work is that they offer “disappearing message” features—mechanisms to automatically delete messages after a preset amount of time—that are incompatible with federal record retention laws. This issue was on full display in the principals’ chat about the impending strike on Yemen, which was originally set for one-week auto-delete before the Michael Waltz account changed the timer to four-week auto-delete, according to screenshots of the chat published by The Atlantic on Wednesday. Had The Atlantic’s Goldberg not been mistakenly included in the chat, its contents might not have been preserved in accordance with long-standing government requirements.
In congressional testimony on Wednesday, US director of national intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said that Signal can come preinstalled on government devices. Multiple sources tell WIRED that this is not the norm, though, and noted specifically that downloading consumer apps like Signal to Defense Department devices is highly restricted and often banned. The fact that Hegseth, the defense secretary, participated in the chat indicates that he either obtained an extremely unusual waiver to install Signal on a department device, bypassed the standard process for seeking such a waiver, or was using a non-DOD device for the chat. According to political consultant and podcaster Fred Wellman, DOD “political appointees” demanded that Signal be installed on their government devices last month.
Core to the Trump administration’s defense of the behavior is the claim that no classified material was discussed in the Signal chat. In particular, Gabbard and others have noted that Hegseth himself is the classification authority for the information. Multiple sources tell WIRED, though, that this authority does not make a consumer application the right forum for such a discussion.
“The way this was being communicated, the conversation had no formal designation like 'for official use only' or something. But whether it should have been classified or not, whatever it was, it was obviously sensitive operational information that no soldier or officer would be expected to release to the public—but they had added a member of the media into the chat,” says Andy Jabbour, a US Army veteran and founder of the domestic security risk-management firm Gate 15.
Jabbour adds that military personnel undergo annual information awareness and security training to reinforce operating procedures for handling all levels of nonpublic information. Multiple sources emphasize to WIRED that while the information in the Yemen strike chat appears to meet the standard for classification, even nonclassified material can be extremely sensitive and is typically carefully protected.
“Putting aside for a moment that classified information should never be discussed over an unclassified system, it’s also just mind-boggling to me that all of these senior folks who were on this line and nobody bothered to even check, security hygiene 101, who are all the names? Who are they?” US senator Mark Warner, a Virginia Democrat, said during Tuesday’s Senate Intelligence Committee hearing.
According to The Atlantic, 12 Trump administration officials were in the Signal group chat, including vice president JD Vance, secretary of state Marco Rubio, and Trump adviser Susie Wiles. Jabbour adds that even with decisionmaking authorities present and participating in a communication, establishing an information designation or declassifying information happens through an established, proactive process. As he puts it, “If you spill milk on the floor, you can’t just say, ‘That’s actually not spilled milk, because I intended to spill it.’”
All of which is to say, SignalGate raises plenty of security, privacy, and legal issues. But the security of Signal itself is not one of them. Despite that, in the wake of The Atlantic’s story on Monday, some have sought tenuous connections between the Trump cabinet’s security breach and Signal vulnerabilities. On Tuesday, for example, a Pentagon adviser echoed a report from Google’s security researchers, who alerted Signal earlier this year to a phishing technique that Russian military intelligence used to target the app’s users in Ukraine. But Signal pushed out an update to make that tactic—which tricks users into adding a hacker as a secondary device on their account—far harder to pull off, and the same tactic also targeted some accounts on the messaging services WhatsApp and Telegram.
“Phishing attacks against people using popular applications and websites are a fact of life on the internet,” Signal spokesperson Jun Harada tells WIRED. “Once we learned that Signal users were being targeted, and how they were being targeted, we introduced additional safeguards and in-app warnings to help protect people from falling victim to phishing attacks. This work was completed months ago."
In fact, says White, the cryptography researcher, if the Trump administration is going to put secret communications at risk by discussing war plans on unapproved commercial devices and freely available messaging apps, they could have done much worse than to choose Signal for those conversations, given its reputation and track record among security experts.
“Signal is the consensus recommendation for highly at-risk communities—human rights activists, attorneys, and confidential sources for journalists,” says White. Just not, as this week has made clear, executive branch officials planning airstrikes.

aventurine with an android reader—he's suspicious at first (he's always suspicious) but it's easy enough to integrate you into his life while still keeping you at bay. there's nothing messy about it, not like there would be with another type of lifeform, because you're programmed to take his commands. you take no offense. you have no feelings about it.
still, he's careful around you. you could be hacked; you could also be programmed to spill his secrets.
but he gets used to you. you're composed, comfortable in your distance. it makes you easier to talk to, in some ways. you don't want anything from him. and that, aventurine finds, is the strangest part of all.
he likes you, he realizes.
and it's safe to like you. you're just an android with a programmed personality. you'll follow his commands, and you'll follow them to the letter.
(you're tethered to him; you won't leave him.)
it's easier with you.
until one day, when he presses in close to tease you, as he often does despite your lack of reaction, and you raise your hand and feather your fingers against his cheek.
his heart skips a beat.

Rambling about the basics of my post-bionic island Marcus redemption au :3
1. Marcus uses she/it pronouns. That is an agender butch lesbian TO ME.
Okay so I am a firm believer that Marcus's software and consciousness is backed up somewhere. She's Douglas's best creation and everyone knows it. Especially Giselle who literally COULD NOT replicate it in her androids. Also, Marcus literally reconstructed itself after the events of its first "death" in The Vanishing and was fully aware of what was going on up until she got melted by Douglas sooooo...
In my mind I think her consciousness is kinda just off somewhere trying to find a way back. If Marcus was pissed for the actions in Bionic Showdown she would absolutely be SEETHING about The Vanishing because it truly showed it that not only did Douglas leave her for death, he did not ever see her as a child because he couldn't even remember a single thing about it. Especially after seeing how much Douglas seemed to care about Daniel 🤨 oh she wants that man DEAD!
But despite all this she can't just make itself a new body... So it Bionic Showdown style hacks into Eddy's servers (Great idea hacking into a house full of people who would rather it stay dead... What could go wrong?) and just is a general nuisance. I think she'd show herself to Leo first because she lives to make his life a living hell and Leo would be actively trying to get rid of it for anywhere between weeks or months before Donald finds out (I don't think Leo would tell him because he feels that he NEEDS to be the one to finally kill Marcus for real. Tbf Marcus tried to kill him for funsies so like... Deserved). Donald upon finding out is understandably very upset (toward Marcus not Leo because I cannot stand Donald being a bad father please give that man GROWTH).
Marcus needs Donald to build her a body: 1) Because who else would do it 2) she knows it would bother Douglas if not only she came back, she was improved by his brother of all people
Obviously Donald isn't gonna do it... Not at first. Marcus is still clearly murderous but all his attempts at getting rid of her are met with failure. Marcus is there to stick around so he builds it one screen solely for herself in the lab so she won't interfere with anything else (does this work? I'll let you decide). He tells it that he won't even consider building her a new body unless she actually changes (read: isn't going to murder everyone).
So Marcus bides her time. She definitely thinks she can trick them into thinking she's changed when she actually hasn't. Which does not work because it finds itself actually mellowing over time. Leo isn't always there because he's on the island with Adam so it can't him, and Donald is busy with Tasha and eventually Naomi. Plus Chase, Bree, and Douglas being busy with the Elite Force (completely different in my mind but that's not relevant)
I like to think Tasha found out about Marcus on her own sometime when she was the only one in the house. At first she was vehemently against its presence but Tasha is the only reasonable adult in this whole show so I think she'd start to get to know Marcus and realize that she really was just a kid. A kid who was used and cast aside on multiple occasions only to be killed by the man it viewed as its father and she would be absolutely sickened by everything that happened.
Marcus's presence would be a household secret. No need to worry anyone else when there was no guarantee anything would even happen right? (I can't decide if Adam would know purely because he's the most protective but like they were all fine with Douglas sooooo... Idk)
Over time Marcus would actually grow attached to them and calm down so eventually she gets her body. Marcus definitely figured out her gender between her first revival and The Vanishing but she had people to kill so that was not her main priority. Which was also her mentality going into this so she definitely didn't tell anyone until they were talking about making her body. It doesn't want any changes so essentially it's just a recreation of its look in The Vanishing. Donald finds a way to make Marcus actually last longer unlike its original model.
They make it very clear that if Marcus tries anything they'll turn on her but like honestly only Leo means it by this point. Leo is still highly suspicious (valid honestly) and its not helped by the fact that Marcus still does not care for his ass. But by this point I think both Donald and Tasha have grown attached because they've started to humanize Marcus and really sympathize with it. Marcus is largely confined to the house so they can monitor its behavior before they let it out, especially before they let it interact with everyone else.
Eventually they'd take her to the Elite Force and she's obviously met with hostility and suspicion but I think the Mighty Med crew would show it some grace. She's mostly just hanging around and making highly passive aggressive comments at Douglas. I don't think she would leave because even if she promises not to kill anyone it definitely is not going to make Douglas's life easy. She needs to make sure that Douglas eventually sees her as a person. It won't settle for any less. She needs to know that Douglas's decisions will keep him up at night. That he won't ever be able to live with and recover from the guilt that he killed his child.
Misc.:
1. Marcus definitely becomes fast friends with the Mighty Med crew, but especially with Oliver and Skylar. Skylar because I think they would bond over the android and alien thing and Oliver because of the parental issues obviously.
2. Oliver HATES Douglas after learning everything no question. I think he would be the only one to truly understand and connect with Marcus over this.

Book recs: robots and artificial intelligences
A note: I'm differentiating here between artificial intelligence and transhumanism (such as uploaded consciousnesses and cyborgs), which I intend to make a separate rec post for at a later date.
(Titles marked with * are my personal favorites)
Other book rec posts:
Really cool fantasy worldbuilding, really cool sci-fi worldbuilding, dark sapphic romances, mermaid books, vampire books, portal fantasies
Tumblr media
Continue beneath the cut for details on the books!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Outside by Ada Hoffman*
AKA the book the put me in an existenial crisis. Souls are real, and they are used to feed AI gods in this lovecraftian inspired scifi where reality is warped and artifical gods stand against real, unfathomable ones. Autistic scientist Yasira is accused of heresy and, to save her eternal soul, is recruited by post-human cybernetic 'angels’ to help hunt down her own former mentor, who is threatening to tear reality itself apart.
The Prey of Gods by Nicky Drayden
South African-set scifi featuring gods ancient and new, robots finding sentience, dik-diks, and a gay teen with mind control abilities. An ancient goddess seeks to return to her true power no matter how many humans she has to sacrifice to get there. A little bit all over the place but very creative and fresh.
17776: What Football Will Look Like in the Future by Jon Bois*
A multi-media web novel available to read freely online (which you should do!!). I don't want to give too much away as the initial punch of finding things out is part of the journey, but it's both hilarious and profound as it questions the meaning of humanity and life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Illuminae (Illuminae Files) by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff*
Young adult told through the medium of transcripts, text messages and the like (this is one of few books where I highly recommend reading a physical copy over a digital as the visual aspect is much more enjoyable like that). After their colony is attacked, the surviving inhabitants flee on space ships, attempting to avoid the pursuing killers while also dealing with a deadly madening plague on board and a ruthless ship AI seemingly losing its mind.
A Closed and Common Orbit (Wayfarers series) by Becky Chambers*
Technically part two of a series, but stands well on its own as the installments are only losely connected (though I recommend reading the first book as well, it's very good). A former ship's AI recently moved into an illegal android body tries to make sense of life as she navigates her way through humans and aliens alike.
The Quiet at the End of the World by Lauren James*
Young adult. After the spread of a global virus causing infertility, teenagers Lowrie and Shen are now the youngest humans alive as the adults around them race to find a cure. As they investigate the ruins of the world, the two come across records from the past, of how grief stricken people turned to raising artificial children in apps and how these 'children' developed, and through these records the two learn of their history. Also has a bisexual main character!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A Psalm for the Wild-Built (Monk and Robot series) by Becky Chambers
Novella. Long ago, robots, upon gaining sentience, simply laid down their work and walked into the wilderness. Long after, a tea monk looking for purpose follows after them into the wilds, where they come across one of the robots seeking its own sort of answers. While not plotless, this story focuses more on character and vibes over plot. Also has a nonbinary main character and features conversations on gender between human and robot.
All Systems Red (The Murderbot Diaries) by Martha Wells*
After having hacked its own governor module, SecUnit uses its small amount of new freedom to secretly download and watch as much media as it can between doing its job guarding humans. But when the scientists it’s been charged with keeping safe come under attack, it must make a choice about whether to continue keeping its freedom secret or risk it all to save them. The series features both novellas and full length novels, and balances humor with scathing critique of capitalism.
Machinehood by S.B. Divya
Prudent in the rise of AI and machine learning, Machinehood shows a near future in which humans struggle to find a place on the workforce as more and more jobs are given to AI. Status quo is shaken as a dangerous terrorist group calling itself The Machinehood starts committing attacks. A close look both at the rights of humans in a technologically changing world, and at the rights of AI as their intelligence edges ever closer to full sentience.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Company of Death by Elisa Hansen*
A wild mix of genres, where a zombie apocalypse has struck and vampires gather up humans to keep their food source from going extinct, a robot travels across America with a young man she's tasked to keep safe, and former-vampire-hunter-recent-zombie Emily teams up with Death himself to stop the apocalypse. Features bi and ace characters! Bonus rec: the author also runs the youtube channel Maven of the Eventide, where she talks about various vampire media. Check it out!
Railhead by Philip Reeve
Young adult. In a future where humanity travel between the stars using not spaceships but a portal-connected system of sentient trains, a young thief and street urchin is hired to steal something off of the Emperor's train.
Being by Kevin Brooks*
Young adult. Cards on the table, I think I was about 14 when I last read this, but it made a strong enough impression that I still think of it as one of my favorite books. After having gone in for a routine exam, doctors make a stunning discovery about Robert Smith: he isn't human. Suddenly hunted, Robert goes on the run as he tries to cope with the fact of his own existence. While I love this book, it gives very few answers to its many mysteries, so don’t go in expecting full explanations.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie*
A space opera in which sentient spaceships can walk the ground in stolen human bodies, so called ancillaries. One of these ancillaries, the sole survivor after the complete destruction of her ship and crew, is one the hunt for revenge. This series also does very cool things with gender!
Crier's War by Nina Varela
Who says sci-fi has monopoly on robots? In sapphic YA fantasy Crier's War, artificially created automae have defeated and subjugated humans, who live as second class citizens. Young Ayla goes undercover as a servant, meaning to assassinate automae girl and Sovereign's daughter Crier. This would be easier if the two weren't quick to develop feelings for each other.
My Heart is Human by Reese Hogan
Nine years ago, all complex technology was made illegal. This complicates life for Joel, young transgender single father, as a bionic just uploaded itself into his brain without consent. Scared of losing his daughter, Joel tries to keep the bionic secret while using it to fix his life, but things quickly get more complicated as the bionic gains more and more control of his body. Makes a lot of cool paralells of bodily autonomy to Joel's experiences as a transman. Bonus rec: if you like the general concept of struggling for physical control over one's body with an AI, may I also suggest the (much grittier and gory) movie Upgrade.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Archive Undying (The Downworld Sequence) by Emma Mieko Candon
In a world where AI gods sometimes lose their minds and take entire populations down with them, Sunai was the only survivor when his god went down. In the 17 years since, he has wandered on his own, unable to either die or age, drowning his sorrows in drink and men. But his attempts to flee his past comes to a stop as he is forced back into the struggle between man and machine. Featuring some pretty wild world building and narrative techniques, this book will definitely confuse you, but it is worth the experience.
Activation Degradation by Marina J. Lostetter
Unit Four comes to life in the middle of a war. The mine it was created to care for is under attack, and as Unit Four is activated with the memories of its predecessors, it is thrown into the task of protecting it at any cost. When the battle leads to its capture, it is prepared to do anything to stop its captors, even as their very presence causes it to question all that it knows.
Sea of Rust by C. Robert Cargill*
Years after the death of the last human at the hands of a robot uprising, Brittle travels the desert searching for machines on the brink of breaking down whose parts she can scavenge. The world is quickly falling apart as a war between OWIs - One World Intelligences - struggle to absorb every robot, willing or not. Bleak and captivating, Sea of Rust features horrible people who you can’t help but root for anyway as they struggle for their lives while questioning the very nature of said lives.
Bonus AKA I haven't read these yet but they seem really cool
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hybrid Child by Mariko Ōhara
Japanese 1990s classic. Follows an escaped AI who can take on the form of the people it has consumed.
World Running Down by Al Hess
Follows a powerful AI that has been forced into an android body against its will.
The Thousand Year Beach by Hirotaka Tobi
Set in a virtual world populated by AIs, meant as a resort for human guests who stopped showing up over a thousand years ago, leaving the AIs on their own.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Shall Machines Surrender by Benjanun Sriduangkaew
Novella. Machines are the gods and rulers of the Dyson sphere Shenzhen, where humans live in luxury and strive to become host bodies for future AIs.
After On by Rob Reid
Phluttr is a social media and a person, potential hero and potential villain, holder of the secrets of all her users.
Annie Bot by Sierra Greer
Annie Bot was designed to be a perfect girlfriend, but as she learns all the more about being human, perfection becomes all the more distant.
Honorary mentions AKA these didn't really work for me but maybe you guys will like them:
The Lives of Puppets by T.J. Klune, Machines Like Me by Ian McEwan, Barbary Station by R.E. Stearns, The A.I. Who Loved Me by Alyssa Cole, Medusa Uploaded by Emily Devenport

any songs that u think fit gonta? ive been looking but i feel like all the playlists that people make of him are just. really surface-level and while there are definitely more light-hearted songs that fit him i never see anything about the Self-Hatred and Guilt yknow
Oh, I'm so happy to get an ask like this! Not sure if these will be exactly what you're looking for, or suit your tastes, but I do have some sad/bittersweet songs I'd love to share! I don't have Spotify unfortunately, but I'll leave links to YT or wherever they can be found.
Hopefully self-explanatory lyrics:
Any "Bottom of the Sea" version, so Dhruva Aliman (original?), Gresby Nash, and Noisecontrollers covers This is literally THE Gonta song, as his execution theme samples lyrics from it.
Learn to be Lonely (Minnie Driver) I actually plan to draw something for that one 8D
Bulbel (Mili - Ender Lilies OST)
Weight of the World (NieR:Automata OST)
End of All Things (Jessica Curry) + lyrics
Cautionary Warning (John Sykes - Legend of Black Heaven) The choir could be Gonta's POV towards Kokichi, but as a whole mostly fits Gonta situation in Ch4 VR
Wings of a Butterfly (HIM) Also imo very fitting Ch4/Killing Game Busters Gonta-focused example. I actually drew something to this that I posted before as wip!
An Unkindness - A death
More obscurely or partially fitting lyrics, or instrumentals with fitting vibes/title + context, if necessary:
End of the World (Dot. Hack//Sign)
So Close (Ólafur Arnalds)
LONER, A 3! (Shunsuke Takeuchi) It's an uplifting song actually, but the fact that it's sung my none other than Gonta's JP VA, and represents an attitude that's his opposite yet plausibly achievable, had he have a chance to heal and reflect on his ways... Well, that makes it sad for me to listen to, in a "what could've been" kinda way.
Secret Betrayal (Yuka Kitamura, Dark Souls III OST) So there's this quest in DS3 that enables specific ending. You enter an optional area that looks like an alternative version of the place you know from your "normal" world. In this little dimensional pocket you find a pair of eyes. You go to Firekeeper, give her these eyes, and make her experience a vision of the end of the current world. Heartbroken yet allured by this, she asks "Is that what you wish for?". You may say "Yes". She agrees to form a secret pact with you, help you bring the end of the Age of Fire (a cycle the game indirectly implies is pointless to continue), betraying everyone's hopes and pretty much ending them all... But should you change your mind - "Kill me." - she says - "I shall return as I once was" (she sort of "resets", by ressurecting and losing her memory of the deal and of the world-ending vision she saw). If you go through this storyline, you can even betray her by the very end, leading to another variant of that ending. This music is what the default Firelink theme changes to once this storyline is active.
Mourning (NieR:Automata OST) So there's this sidequest in Automata. An android asks you to investigate her friend's murder. Turns out it was she herself who's killed said friend. She was an executioner following orders, who deleted her memories, because she couldn't bear living with the knowledge she took her friend's life. "Sometimes it's better to not know the truth" is being said, but it's not actually about that android's actions... more of a justification why executioners like her exist in secret, and why they eliminate those who might know or seek too many painful secrets. The song plays as the quest gets completed. It's written in fictional language, but there are fan interpretations out there: link

It goes without saying that the "bad guys" the UK government claims it wants to target will be able to communicate in secret no matter what Apple does here. They can just use an Android phone and sideload a secure messaging app, or register an iPhone in Ireland or any other country and bring it to the UK. The only people who will be harmed by the combination of the British government's reckless disregard for security, and Apple's designs that trade the security of its users for the security of its shareholders are millions of law-abiding Britons, whose most sensitive data will be up for grabs by anyone who hacks their accounts.

“The whole world is a series of miracles, but we’re so used to them we call them ordinary things.” —Hans Christian Andersen
Tumblr media
Introduction
ANGE, or what her name could be pronounced as “Anji”, is the enigmatic cyber girl who currently takes a refuge at Yuuya’s residence and eventually becomes the secret member of Miraitabi. Also according to several glitches and gaps in her memories together with her wondrous ability to freely hack into any device or system as long as they have the least bit of electricity running through them, she does assume herself to be some kind of an “Artificial Intelligence (A.I.)” and is very eager to explore the foreign world on the other side of her screen
...But then, back to the great puzzle, what in the world exactly is she?
Tumblr media
The art belongs to neka made by KuroKun_0718
ANGE normally takes her virtual appearance of a teenage girl with petite stature. And unlike other A.I.s in their regular state, her eyes are permanently flashing red sparkling with liveliness while her pupils are inhuman white. She has pale white skin and incredibly long white hairs gleaming with faint rainbow reflection like that on the disk freely flowing down to her feet. Her bangs are parted to both sides with the middle lock falling over her nose, leaving some flaps resembling a pair of small wings/fins on each side. Her other most iconic feature were one cowlick that looks like an antenna sticking on top of her head. She often sports a white shirt with blue collar ribbon worn under the baby blue off-the-shoulder sweater. She also wears a pair of blue shorts and dons an oversized iridescent blue jacket from times to times. She loves to move around with bare-feet, but strangely enough, there is always a halo consisting of numerous dark diamond-shaped particles following behind her back anywhere she goes. …It’s still unknown whether she has another ‘mode’ like other androids or n̸̻͉͂̊͌̚̚o̢̟͓͕̮̜ͭ̽̅́̊̕̕͠ ţ̸̤̰͙͖̹͎̹̄ͣ͗ͣ́̂̐͌̇̾̿̔͗̚̕͘͘͟͢
Etymology
ANGE (アンジ) is written in katakana since it’s likely to be from foreign origin.
This name is probably derived from Latin and Greek word “Angel” which, in spite of its most references as a divine figure, actually means “Messenger”.

— Personality —
Despite merely existed via the erratic flow of electrons, ANGE is regardless the vivacious cyber girl with high voltages of enthusiasm and unbounding span of curiosity. Lively, spontaneous, opinionated, and a little bit cheeky with some touch of childish innocence; she is the free spirit who loves getting her mind spinning around with countless ideas and new discoveries.
One of her biggest traits is her outspoken nature, which is greatly evident in her most interactions with her favorite human as she is shown to be extremely inquisitive about every little thing that has piqued her interest, especially when it relates to those things that are new or unknown to her such as “the world on the other side” where she somehow harbor quite a wild fascination toward.
However, who would have known that this seemingly “Pixie Girl” isn’t as ditzy as she looks… While it’s true that she is undeniably naive due to her lack of experiences, she is still witty enough to catch up on many unspoken things, capable of doubting, and isn’t all the time wearing her heart on her sleeves due to her personal reasons or whatsoever who knows.
And even if she is already knowledgeable beyond human standards thanks to her ability to access any source of data on the worldwide internet, what has brought her brilliance to shine the brightest is her adaptability and her hyperactive zest for learning.
Also a little bit mischievous with a great penchant for funsies, she often shows the streak to pull some light-hearted pranks on others (which unfortunately, the regular victim is none other than her favorite ‘human’)
Her absence of prior memories including her circumstance of not having any flesh and blood in her possession doesn’t only detach her from proper common sense but also affects her persona in deeper details. In struggle to grasp her own identity, she has always yearned to be something so that she could feel belonged to somewhere. It’s also possible that her always happy-go-lucky attitude is just a facade she adopts to mask her deep anxiety since she has nothing else she could hold onto except her buddy cat and the human “friend” whom she gradually develops some feelings of familiarity to be around.
Her real personality might be shrouded in mystery even to herself, but her growing care and protectiveness towards her comrades is something hard to defy. Little does she realize… She herself is quite emphatic than what should be for a heartless entity; more so, she is especially attuned to other’s sadness. That’s probably why she is always eager to make her loved ones smile through her various pranks and nonstop chitchat.

Trivia
Her favorite animal is Sea Angel which she has also taken as her theme animal.
Even if she thinks of herself as an A.I., ANGE happens to suffer some kind of a condition similar to what’s called ‘Amnesia’ in humans as she couldn’t properly recall anything prior her ‘Awakening’ except what is likely to be her name.
As such, she doesn’t even remember her date of birth, why she has been made, or how she ended up being in the device around her buddy cat’s neck until the kitten was soon discovered by Yuuya Kanata of Miraitabi.
January 19th isn’t her real birth date but is the day chosen based on the first time she gained consciousness and found herself in a non-physical cyber form —Also coincidentally, it is the same day Miraitabi got officially announced in the D.R.B.
Much to Yuuya’s surprise, she claimed to understand animal language, especially her buddy cat “Ojou-chan” which gets later revealed that the kitten has also understood human language.
Unlike other A.I.s, her virtual form is actually the animating 3D model of herself by default. But at the same time, she doesn’t have a materialized body like other androids.
The symbol over her manubrium isn’t authentic, she has just added it upon her model after learning other A.I.s do have their own symbols somewhere on their bodies like some kind of tattoo.
Despite being one of the residents in another exclusive dimension only known and belongs to A.I. conglomerate, she still tends to spend most of her time with her favorite human in the real world. And likewise her mysterious background in the real world, her origin there isn’t even less vague as she has suddenly emerged from somewhere that is believed to be a wasteland at the depth of cyber marine. Moreover, from the experienced sight of greater A.I.s, they can almost outright point out that her coding has something… ‘abnormal’ about it.
Although she has a ability to freely hack transfer herself to any network or electrical device, her favorite host is Yuuya’s smartphone. Thus, this lowkey indicates she is basically with him 24/7 as long as he has his phone with himself.
Thanks to Asahi’s quick wit, she is able to introduce herself to Yuuya’s friends and gets recognized as “his foreign childhood friend who often makes a call to him since she lives in a very very faraway place”.
She is a music enthusiast like Yuuya and recently debuts herself as another member of an indie unit “Sunflower & Sea anemone” alongside him.
Even though she claims herself to be a reasonable science person, she seems to have a guilty pleasure for myths and fairy tales... particularly the romantic ones.
After searching up things for Yuuya’s request, she seems to be interested in many participants who has suffered ‘Memories Loss’ just like her. Who knows? Maybe this might have something more beneath the surface…

Hey this is a head cannon for a new type of au:
ANDRIOD AU!!!
(This my first au take it easy on me~.)
Okay so in this Au the world while normal is on the verge of futuristic advancement. For example, it has virtual reality games and holograms, but you still have to drive in a normal car.
But the most important technology leading the way for change is andriods. Human-like robots created to assist humans in their tasks. Best of all no two androids are the same! All custom made!
There are lot of small companies but the major ones are The Devil’s kingdom and Celestial realm of androids or the “Devildom” and “Celestial realm” for short. There’s also a third major one but it’s pretty secretive.
Well one day the three companies came up with a new secret program “The Mecca system.” Which allowed androids to learn emotions and develop a conscious basically a heart.
They imputed it into some of their company androids and things we’re going great….
Until a certain incident caused six androids to rebel against the head of the celestial realm causing them to get shut down. Luckily they were found and took in by the Devildom head…..after they blocked some memories from them.
After the move the six (now Seven) adjusted well and were helpful around the company and even started going the school sponsored by said company to manage it. But as time went on the companies feared that the seven were becoming too human-like and might rise up again especially after a certain outburst.
So they took drastic measures by hacking into the Mecca system and they were able to suppress it in the androids so they couldn’t experience real emotions. The last thing they needed was someone to watch them to make sure the don’t tap into it again until they can shut whole thing down permanently.
And lo and behold they choose MC whose job was to stay with the seven androids and ordered them around for year. The one instruction they were given was “DON’T treat them like humans”.
Luckily our MC does just the opposite.
A/N The pact still kinda exists but I will talk about it later.

Mystery Hack
Connor RK800 x reader
Enemies to lovers
Chapter 1 : Welcome to Mystery Hack, out now
Tumblr media
January 2039.
The android revolution had failed two month ago.
Markus the leader had gone missing, the other deviant were either destructed or went missing too.
Connor, who remained a machine, is now working on a new lead, finding code sources in the deviant program. RA9. A code he also owns in his program.
A new named appear in the case.
Y/N L/N. Co-creator of Cyberlife.
May 2039
A strange videogram shut all the TV programs in the world at the same time. A mysterious character appears on the screen. They reveal to the audience a massive state secret before the screen return to normal.
The FBI and Connor start investigating.
Nothing seem to connect these two cases.
How ironic is it when Connor has to hunt down the person who created him to be a deviant in the first place.
Tumblr media
So, here is the prologue and the idea beneath the story! If you are interested, please do let me know. I would be delighted to work on it.
Bye!

In a corporate-dominated space-faring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. For their own safety, exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids. But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn’t a primary concern.
On a distant planet, a team of scientists is conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied ‘droid--a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module and refers to itself (though never out loud) as “Murderbot.” Scornful of humans, Murderbot wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is, but when a neighboring mission goes dark, it's up to the scientists and Murderbot to get to the truth.

The Masquerade Series (The Traitor Baru Cormorant, The Monster Baru Cormorant, The Tyrant Baru Cormorant) by Seth Dickinson
Tomorrow, on the beach, Baru Cormorant will look up from the sand of her home and see red sails on the horizon.
The Empire of Masks is coming, armed with coin and ink, doctrine and compass, soap and lies. They’ll conquer Baru’s island, rewrite her culture, criminalize her customs, and dispose of one of her fathers. But Baru is patient. She’ll swallow her hate, prove her talent, and join the Masquerade. She will learn the secrets of empire. She’ll be exactly what they need. And she’ll claw her way high enough up the rungs of power to set her people free.
In a final test of her loyalty, the Masquerade will send Baru to bring order to distant Aurdwynn, a snakepit of rebels, informants, and seditious dukes. Aurdwynn kills everyone who tries to rule it. To survive, Baru will need to untangle this land’s intricate web of treachery - and conceal her attraction to the dangerously fascinating Duchess Tain Hu.
But Baru is a savant in games of power, as ruthless in her tactics as she is fixated on her goals. In the calculus of her schemes, all ledgers must be balanced, and the price of liberation paid in full.

i don't know anything about your ocs but reblog karma gives me a chance to learn lol. skin, bound & desire for nate.
omg yay hi dw about knowing anything about my ocs i barely talk about them 😔
skin: How comfortable is your OC in their skin? Do they grapple with anything that lives inside them—a beast, a curse, a failure, a monster? How do they face the smallest, weakest, most horrible version of themself? Are they able to acknowledge it at all?
crazy question to ask for nate!! he is absolutely not comfortable in his own skin. he's from my most grounded story so he's no isolated cannibal or android but he's this big tall guy who's extremely uncomfortable being that way.
he does think of himself as a failure too. he hasn't really done anything with his life, just helped out his family who don't really like him that much. he got into a really bad fight as a teenager and that's all anyone remembers about him.
i don't think he'd be able to acknowledge the weakest version of himself. i think he'd ignore it and just continue doing what he's always done, not being able to face the worst parts of himself.
bound: Has your OC ever been imprisoned or captured? What happened? How did they get out? Did the experience leave any scars?
so nate has never been in this situation but it's a very interesting one to ask for another oc who's an android so you'll have to forgive me but this one's about her now.
she's a hacked android, the first time she's powered on As Herself she's already owned by someone else. she's been imprisoned her whole life. she doesn't necessarily think of the woman that owns her as being evil. she kind of idolizes her as the first thing she saw but wishes she would understand that the android isn't just some machine. she's a neglectful mother figure and a toxic lover figure to the android at the same time.
i think in at least one potential ending she does escape. as for how, and if it left any scars......well. who knows. who knows how long she lasts outside of the claustrophobic apartment which is the only thing she's known. who knows if she'll get what she really want, which is to be more human than she is seen as.
desire: What's one thing your OC wants more than anything in the world? Are they open with that desire? Why or why not? What would they do to fulfill it?
back to nate!! i think for a long time he placed so much weight on his own desires. "i want to leave this town" "i want to find someone to love" "i want to stay with my best friend"
at the point where the story starts, he's given up on all of that. he's not leaving anytime soon, he's not going to find anyone he loves, his best friend is nearby but they've been distant lately.
he DOES end up meeting someone he loves though and that's when the wanting starts creeping back in. "i want to stay with him" "i want to not fuck this up" "i want us to be somewhere else, in a different kind of situation"
he's absolutely not open with any of those. not to anyone. not even to his lover for a long time. the relationship is secret for a long time and he's not a very open person either.
also......not quite canon but........i think in a world where he and his lover DO leave the town they live in, nate might realize he'd be happier as a woman. transfem nate would start wanting things she couldn't even comprehend as desires when she was a man.
