"Hijab is feminist/a choice" must be one of the worst takes Ive ever read on this website.
Like you're just gonna ignore all the women forced to wear it in the middle East?? You're gonna ignore how its a tool for men to control women and their place on society? You're gonna ignore the inherent misogyny of 1. Having women covered but not men 2. Having women covering their skin and hair SO MEN DONT SEE IT???? AND HOW DO YOU KNOW ITS A CHOICE IF YOUR FAMILY PRESSURES YOU INTO IT??? Like no nerd to live in Afghanistan to be forced of it. You can live in a western country and be forced all the same.
Hijab will stop being misogynistic the day men wear it too. There is no other option.
"You must respect other people's culture/practices" Only if they're harmless. I will never respect a culture which is misogynistic.

I am tired of people pushing a one sided view on hijab, and how it’s viewed through an uncritical lens. If nonMuslims criticize it that’s racist, if ex Muslims criticize it they don’t know what they’re talking about, and if Muslim women criticize it well, they’re just pandering to the nonMuslims.

its difficult having to wear a hijab when you arent muslim because its like a huge sticker on your forehead that says muslim. Its super frustrating when people come up to you and ask you questions about islam and stuff. Like today, for example, was my first day at my job. A bunch people came up to me and were asking me questions about islam. They were being friendly of course, they just wanted to know more about the damned religion. But for some reason, it frustrated me that they thought i was muslim. Again, i 100% understand why they would think that, i wear a hijab. But i still got frustrated nonetheless. And i cant just sit there and try to explain to everyone who comes to talk to me that I’m in fact NOT muslim, that wearing a hijab isn’t really a choice. It would simply be too long and complicated of a story. They wouldn’t understand.

Protesters Call for a Three-day Strike in Iran From Monday
Tehran: Protesters in Iran called on Sunday a three-day strike this week as they try to keep up pressure on authorities over the death in custody of Mahsa Amini, with protests planned on the day President Ebrahim Raisi is due to address students in Tehran.
Raisi is expected to visit Tehran University on Wednesday, celebrated in Iran as Student Day.

Forcing someone, like a queer person, to respect a religion is the dumbest and most disrespectful thing someone could ever do. What? You want me to respect what persecuted and killed queer people? You want ME, a lesbian, to respect your religion, which kills queers almost every day because your little fairytale said I'm a sinner? Fuck off.

Please, don’t forget about the women in Afghanistan.
This image is not at all a commentary on Islam and/or of the different head-coverings that a woman may choose to wear while respecting her faith. Wearing a burqa/burka does not equate to an inherent lack of rights/freedom. This is also not a criticism of the Barbie movie. This is a statement about the brutal treatment of the women and girls in Afghanistan (as well as in Iran).
I loved the Barbie movie and think it’s a very important and empowering film. However, it is a bit jarring when I’m scrolling through my phone, listening to the Barbie soundtrack, and I come across an article detailing the mounting horrors these women face in these countries. There is so much happening in the world, and it all needs news time, but the virtual media silence on this topic is frightening.
Even though my country isn’t perfect (especially so after June of last year), it’s easy to lose perspective on how privileged I am.
The many different flavors of western feminism aren’t for everyone and every culture; to think so would be privileged and tone deaf. There is no "one-size-fits-all" kind of empowerment. But, objectively, what is happening to women and girls in Afghanistan and Iran is abhorrent and cannot be forgotten.
If Barbie can be anything, then Barbie can be an advocate and an activist. Do what you can, Barbies.
“I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are very different from my own.” ― Audre Lorde

September 2022 - Clashes broke out all over Iran between protesters and police, after religious “morality” police killed Jina Mahsa Amini, a 22-year old Kurdish woman for not wearing her headscarf correctly in their eyes.
People have risen up in anger against police brutality and religious oppression, with many women taking off or burning their hijabs, and people burning down police stations, government buildings, banks and symbols of the theocratic government, and battling police in the streets. At least thirty-five protesters have been killed so far. [video]/[video]/[video]/[video]

19-year-old celebrity chef Mehrshad Shahidi also called Iran's Jamie Oliver was beaten to death by security forces amid anti-hijab protests in the country.
"Our son lost his life as a result of receiving baton blows to his head after his arrest, but we have been under pressure by the regime to say that he has died of a heart attack", a relative of Mehrshad told Iran International TV. His family also said that officials had pushed them to say to the public that Mehrshad Shahidi died of a heart attack.

Multicultural societies can be great, but there's one condition: different cultures must be willing to learn from each other and respect each other's values.
If people from one culture are open and welcoming, but people from the other culture want to enforce their own rules and take away people's freedom in the name of their religion, then the results are going to be catastrophic. This is why Europe is suffering right now and it's women who will pay the highest price.
Wondering what I mean? Let's have a look at some statistics:
Poll: 46% of French Muslims believe Sharia law should be applied in country
Over 40% of UK Muslims support “aspects” of sharia law
If it doesn't terrify you I don't know what to tell you. It surely terrifies me as fuck.

I live in a western country but there's a significant amount of women wearing hijabs in my town. And I don't think I'll ever get over the fact that some people will genuiely argue that Islam is not misogynistic because "men must cover themselves" like... oh really? Are you SURE about that? I mean a muslim can only marry another muslim right? So how come every single muslim couple I come across with a women dressed traditionally includes a man dressed in typical western casual clothes like shorts and t shirts??? How come teenage girls wear hijabs and traditionnal clothes while teenage boys wear sweaters and joggings? Its ALMOST as if this religion affected genders differently 🤔🤔🤔

I wouldn’t wish those who vehemently defend hijab and call those who criticize it “anti feminists” even a day of wearing things you feel uncomfortable in and feeling this shame and anger because of it.
I don’t know why it’s better to protect the feelings of those offended by criticism of hijab then those whose lives are ruined because of it.

Rehumanize
The adult human female body is not inappropriate. My body grows hair because I am a mammal, just like men. If I am not granted the freedom to do what I may with my body, I am then considered non-human. The female body needs rehumanization.
