Media outlets who have lauded Taylor-Joy’s “bride-like” ethereal look, the Instagram comments complimenting her timeless style and her fellow celebrities who posed beside her hijab-covered form have mostly been deafeningly silent on the plight of the women of Gaza.
(...)
If Palestinians were not largely Muslim, if they were not Arab - if the women didn’t dress precisely the way that Anya Taylor-Joy gets to dress - then this genocide would have moved the world in the same way that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine did.
We are socialised to swallow the massacre of Arabs and Muslims as commonplace and inconsequential. Our corpses become mere collateral damage to a world unperturbed by our slaughter.
(...)
The success - indeed, the very existence - of both the book and now film series is testament to the West’s desire to consume our Muslim aesthetics in a fantasy realm whilst disenfranchising us in the real world - be it through securitisation or racism, war or genocide.
Dune reminds us of the place that the Arab and Muslim will perpetually inhabit in the West. It tells us: we will feed on your exoticness, adopt the intricacies of your culture, ravage your homelands, all whilst removing you from the equation altogether.

Damn, I wish they didn’t leave the season 3 finale on a cliff hanger like that. What a shame there won’t be a fourth season.

The way HC's exit has overshadowed what was the most accurately adapted, and in my opinion most compelling and dramatic season of the show is gonna piss me off for the next several years, I feel it.
Okay I was gonna keep these in the tags but actually nevermind, salt post inbound
Henry Cavill is a good actor and a good Geralt, I'll never deny this, but the revisionist history that's going on because of his leaving the series is a bunch of nonsense being puppeted by his dudebro gamer fanbase that wants to keep holding him up as the Witcher god.
The whole "he left because of inaccurate adaptation" argument really falls apart when so much of season 3 was pace-for-pace with Time of Contempt...and Henry didn't leave the show until after production on it had wrapped, as confirmed by both Anya and Freya. It loses even more weight when Henry has gone on record more than once that he hadn't even read the books or known they existed before pursuing the role of Geralt in S1.
Also, it literally cannot be denied that this same group of people who ride-or-die for him go completely silent about Freya, Anya, and Joey---or worse, become misogynistic and racist, when what makes the story of The Witcher great is Geralt's relationships to these people and the way he acts as a catalyst in their journeys.
It's just so annoying. Be upset that he's leaving all you want, but don't make shit up and don't be a fucking dick to everyone else who works on that show as if one of them is the imposter who's responsible for his exit---when the much more likely truth is that Warner Bros. was gonna pay big bucks to have him back as Superman.

Not telling anyone how to consume or perceive media (obviously!), but for me I've found it's so crucial to take the show's tone and genre(s) into account - not to mention the prevailing norms during the era it was written. So like when people excoriate '90s sitcom characters for being (gasp) 'problematic', it's not that those fans are technically WRONG, but they're failing to take into account that sitcom characters' flaws and missteps are deliberately exaggerated for comedic effect and that some of what a majority of fandom now views as intolerable was far more generally accepted a couple of decades ago.
Similarly, I think it's futile to apply contemporary ethics and human rules of decorum to supernatural creatures who have been around for centuries. So as someone who loves a few human/vampire ships and is one of like six living Giles/Anya shippers (don't mock me - I'm fragile!), someone once asked if I'm bothered by the age gap and...no, because Anya is a vengeance demon, and BTVS is a mixture of fantasy and horror and comedy and soapy drama rather than a documentary, so for me 'age gap discourse' just doesn't apply as it would between two real human beings. I also just think sometimes we need to focus more on what evokes emotion and stimulates thought and imagination rather than compiling lists of what technically constitutes as problematic by today's rigid yet constantly shifting standards, but I'll stop here before all six mutuals (I LOVE YOU ALL SO MUCH!) unfollow me :)

I'm really confused about the musical's changes to the Dimitri & Anastasia relationship. Yes, they couldn't keep the Dimitri saves her child aspect. But they could keep the part where he worked at the palace and suggest that he and Anya had known each other as children and mayne liked each other, like an echo of the original movie which suggested that Dimitri probably had a little crush on her when he was small. But no. Instead we get : Oh they saw each other once as a kid at a parade and he greeted her in the crowd and their eyes met leading to a love at first sight that lasted their whole lives... Wtf seriously ? It's rubbish ! Especially since Dimitri lost a lot of his anti-hero substance in the musical. Yes, he's still a scammer but he's much more tender and smooth than his film counterpart ! For what ? Again, transform Anya's personality, I can still understand, to make her more like a Disney princess. But why Dimitri ?! My god... the musical is great to listen to and the character of Gleb fantastic, but they massacred my darling Dimitri. I love Gleb, but facing Dimitri from the original film, there is no match. But against the Dimitri of the musical, yes, Gleb wins. Why every time a villain in love is created, people prefer to invent a bland love interest ?!

Me: Alright, it's getting ridiculous in here. Everyone out! Everyone out! Come on!
*everyone starts to stand up*
Me: Not you, Charlie Day
Not you, Keegan Michael Key.
Not you, Anya Taylor-Joy.
Not you, Jack Black.
Not you, Yoshis.
Not you, Seth Rogan who still has said nothing.
Not you, Bowigi shippers making it look like the movie's actually gonna make your ship canon.
*Silence as everyone looks at Chris Pratt*
