Do you think anything would've changed had Regulus been born female?

How did you get inside my head? How did you know I was contemplating fem!Regulus in my downtime? Ngh - I love genderbending characters, and Regulus would be so incredibly interesting.

Okay, so. First thing's first. Name. I'm admittedly tossing up between 'Regina' and 'Rana' as potential names. Regulus, while also being a star, means "little king" a.k.a "prince". Regina means "queen", which is a nice direct link in terms of meaning, symbolism and verbally. Whereas Rana is a star (also know as Delta Eridani according to google), and means "glittering object", "eye-catching" for a girl. It also, when used for a boy's name, apparently means "king" - which ties back to Regulus' original name.

You see my thought process? I'm torn.

But anyway, for this post, I'll refer to her as Rana.

So!

Rana Black is born in the dead of winter, pale as snow, small and squirming. Her mother is satisfied and her father is content. They have what they need - a male heir, and a female bargaining chip.

Sirius and Rana grow up beside each other, hardly more than a year apart in age, and so like twins in how they think and act. Always side-by-side, never far from each other's hip.

They love each other fiercely, and swear when they are just four and three that they always will. Sirius takes his duties as Rana's self-assigned protector seriously, and Rana is the one with soft hands and soothing words that helps pick up the pieces of her brother whenever he crosses their parents.

In their society, they are considered royalty. They come from the oldest family, the strongest House. Their name is as vast and unending as their potential - but they both chafe under the expectations in different ways.

While Sirius is trained like a soldier, beaten and broken down and abused; Rana is taught that her worth begins and ends with her body. She is a woman, and according to her parents, the only thing she's good for is breeding.

She has a betrothed, she knows. She's never met him, but Luis Avery is a name that hangs over her neck like a proverbial sword. And Rana doesn't know why her parents selected him out of all the options, but it's not her place to question their decisions.

Sirius does ask, and Sirius continues to hate Avery even years down the line after the engagement is cancelled.

So, Rana grows up. Sirius goes to Hogwarts, and comes back to her changed. He's more outspoken, more antagonistic, more rebellious - but never with her. He's still her protector, after all.

It's once Rana is sent to Beauxbatons - because Hogwarts might be the preferred school, but the Blacks have roots in France and it's the one choice her father let her make for herself - that she begins to think for herself.

She's been surrounded by people that have told her what's best for her her entire life, but now she sees other girls. Girls that aren't from ancient and noble Houses. Girls who aren't betrothed to a stranger. Girls that are freer with their opinions and words. Girls that aren't demure and quiet little dolls that dance for their parents' amusement.

The first time she hears one of her classmates claim "I'll never have kids" Rana is stunned.

And intrigued.

Slowly, those kinds of thoughts begins to suffuse through her very being. She, for the first time, starts to question why she must do these things.

It's the beginning, but it's by no means the end.

Rana Black is a young girl that takes a look at the hand her parents, her society, her world tried to dump on her, and goes no.

She finds freedom in the more liberal sphere of Beauxbatons. Removed as she is from the rising tension in Britain, without the overbearing eyes of her mother, she's allowed to explore sides of herself that she never knew existed.

I love the idea of an encanto genderbend au. I know you mostly focus on The Maridgal triplets (who wouldn't) but I really wonder how would male Mirabel be in this au?

I like to imagine that he would still keep the same activities( much to Almer objections cause sewing, embroidery, and stuffing toys are not a young man's activities) plus being a young man in a Latino family with no direction and seemingly no person who directly gets him? Can relate.

Mirabilis (or “Miro” as a nickname) is still a quirky, clumsy, hard-working ray of sunshine. The problem is, all that hard-working energy has no direction

He still loves to embroider, but his favourite designs aren’t really taken seriously. He likes bright stuff, very busy patterns and chaotic designs. He doesn’t want to make something plain, he wants to have fun!

Almer only really shows approval for it if Mirabilis is fixing a shirt that got torn or if he’s making something for Antonia. Then it’s “useful.” But the comparisons to Isandro and Luis, who “do no wrong” and are “perfect in every way” never stop. (Until the events of the film anyway)

Miro definitely has his frustrated moments, because it feels like he’s expected to somehow emulate both his brothers at the same time (who are two very different individuals), and he knows he’s nothing like them.

Yet, Almer always tells him to stand aside or simply doesn’t seem to take him seriously. His hobbies aren’t traditionally masculine, but his offers of helping in other areas are brushed off. If he’s not allowed try new things or help in different ways, then why should he stop doing what he enjoys? Sometimes the embroidery almost feels like an act of defiance, even if no one else can see it. His frustration is bubbling just below the surface (ironically, in that respect, he has more in common with his brothers than he realises)

Regarding the racebending thing, you mentioned that Alison, Klaus and Ben are optional. I know you explained Klaus but what do you mean by ben and Alison?

ooohkay so.

just to reiterate: racebending is a case-by-case process because of all that you need to take into account when you do it. same with genderbending or queerbending. it works when doing so doesn’t lead to terrible implications, or when the aspect of the identity of the character that you are changing never mattered much to their story anyway.

when it comes to queerbending, the hargs are fantastic for it (noteL added link for future ref) because so much of their story is allegorical for being a big queer found family (the same way it's allegorical for them being, say, symbolic of different aspects of abuse).

with gender... i mean. it's gotta be 50/50. it's bad that the team isn't three women, three men and klaus. that still needs to be fixed.

allison and vanya's character arcs are tied to their experiences as women, and it's a bad look to make the gender imbalance even worse. they have to stay as is. there's a case to be made for making vanya trans, but she'd have to be a trans woman.

luther's arc is tied to his experience as a man, and as the expectations laid on being "the man of the house" and diego's inadequacies stem from his toxic masculinity. they also need to stay male. and it'd be such a bad idea to make luther trans given his body, and diego's tied up in such cis kind of masculinity that making them trans doesn't really cut it either.

klaus having such an unusual relationship with gender, and being most likely nonbinary needs to be preserved. it's too essential to his character. don't touch it.

ben has potential... but there's a big pitfall. being the sweet sibling everyone felt safe around could easily remain if he were female, but you have to be careful to write her out of being the Fridged Girl / Tragic Girlfriend given that she dies first. especially given that she haunts klaus, idk man. girl spending eternity picking up after her shitty brother? hate that. and the queerness of klaus and ben's relationship depletes a bit if she's a girl. you can do it. but watch out.

number five's power has nothing to do with gender and growing up in a world devoid of gender roles, and then coming back and having to adhere to it again (and being stuck in the body of a little girl, who no one takes seriously, even as she raises serious concerns and is the most competent by far) could be very interesting if five were female. tbh i'd genderbend five if we were to do it again.

and with race, it's also kind of necessary. they're supposed to be representative of the whole world that reginald searched to find them. them all being white in the comic made no sense. only two of them being poc in the show also doesn't make sense.

so:

luther and five need to be white. because racebending luther will just lead to unfixable terrible implications because of his ape body, and five is luther’s twin, so he must be whatever luther is.

diego and vanya should be people of color, because their whiteness doesn't affect their storylines/characterization, and being people of color would enhance those stories. they can be any number of things, but diego works best as a latino character, and vanya as an asian one (hell, look at lila. she’s literally a frankenstein’s monster of pieces of comic vanya, and her being asian feels like a prelude to this change happening fully next time around-- someone noticed the next evolution of vanya’s character, but they did it too late, after they'd already cast someone white, so they pushed forward with the vanya-replacement as a consolation).

klaus, allison and ben fall in between those categories: you can racebend them, but you have to be careful or you could really fuck it up.

klaus can be a person of color, but given how many snags you can trip over in executing that on top of everything else he must be (queer, gnc, an addict), if you can't juggle all those things individually and intersectionally, then you shouldn't. because fucking up could lead to the creation of something genuinely offensive.

ben can be a person of color, as long as you're smart about which way you racebend him, given that he's The Dead One. for instance, it might not be a good idea to make him black, because that instantly invokes Black Guy Dies First stereotyping and you’ll have a hard time trying to work your way out of that one. i think him being asian is a smart choice, especially if vanya is also asian-- the 'only asian character is the dead one' issue evaporates, then.

allison is special. unlike the other characters, her race does actually affect her story.

her status as The Sister Reginald Decided To Keep does involve her whiteness. it might not be particularly prevalent when both she and vanya are white, but it’s there. and if vanya isn't white and she is? big factor.

her assassination of jfk. in the comics, she does so by impersonating jackie kennedy in order to get close enough to rumor him to death. a woc wouldn't be able to make that swap.

her romance with luther has added unfortunate implications if she isn't a white woman, because as many antis pointed out in s1, having a woc be in love with a gorilla man can stoke up some bad stereotypes.

so there is a case to be made for allison staying white. however, unlike with luther for example, all of those necessities and roadblocks can be written in such a way that accounts for and incorporates how race plays into her story and uses it to make said story stronger.

allison's being The One Reginald Kept can still be a story about marginalization if she's a woman of color: shift focus to making the story about palatability. vanya wouldn’t/couldn’t conform, but allison could and would. so explore it: she did everything she could to assimilate and it worked, but at what cost? how much did she lose, and how does she feel about it? (this becomes much more prevalent if both sisters are woc)

allison must kill jfk by rumoring him, but the way she goes about it doesn't matter nearly as much. so she can't hop into the car with jfk? have her rumor him in the ambulance or the hospital after he's shot, or his hotel room, or at the conference he has before he leaves for the motorcade. is allison being in the car with him that important? have her use that commission time tech to freeze time long enough to jump in, rumor him, and jump out before anyone can stop her. it can be done. you just have to get a little creative.

allison must be in a relationship with luther, but as long as you just make the execution of it consensual, mutual, and not absorbed in sexuality (like the show went out of its way to do on day one) then you've ripped the bad implication out before it could take root.

allison’s story actually does have a lot hinging on race. but if you know how to incorporate those things into her story, you can end up with something even stronger. not that the show did of course, but maybe someday someone will.

so,,, that’s what i mean by klaus, ben and allison: it can be done, but you just have to be careful with the execution.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to imply that you were excluding women! I was just chiming in because too often in the RPC's discussions of genderbending, I see women's stake in the conversation get ignored or dismissed. And the people who yell that loudest about it being transphobic also tend to dismiss women's viewpoints with the most aggression, often in a way that reeks of oppression olympics: "At least you have Eowyn, so sit down and shut up." As if we should be grateful for scraps. 1/2

2/2 They act like women are taking something away from the trans community by genderbending, which is an absurd stance. Adding more women doesn't mean we're erasing trans characters. We're both facing the same problem: Massive over-representation of male characters. The people who pit us against each other and turn it into a zero sum game are only making things worse, but they refuse to see that, and if you point that out, you get called transphobic (and often get set death threats, too).

Hello, again! Thank you so much for coming back, I really appreciate that. It's seriously such an extensive issue that I don't think we can have enough voices represented. I'm sorry, too, I didn't mean to imply you did think that for certain! I was just worried I had come across as excluding this really valid point and am definitely aware of how frustrating it feels when people are having a public conversation like this about a topic that has impacted your RP experience (and very like, overall fandom experience as well) without your experience being brought up. I'd feel extremely bad if I made someone feel that way!*

*Which, again, open invitation to anyone on the "this is transphobic" side or even "this is why I'm not comfortable with it" side to politely express themselves. I'm not trying to exclude anyone from this conversation who can have it nicely. If you feel that it can be a civil discussion, you are welcome to drop in and share your thoughts. I continue to irrationally feel that if we can all discuss reasonably where we're coming from that it breeds tolerance. We don't all have to agree, we can politely disagree while expressing our different takes, you know. However, I don't have the time to remind anyone this week that dropping in with aggression isn't going to be rewarded, so, let us please not do that.

Anon, I knew you were going to say Eowyn! I'm not in the LotR fandom, but with something so widely beloved, I have had plenty of friends who were. The same goes with the MCU, you cannot be in the RPC without at least being on the periphery of it, right? It's this way with my primary fandom as well, a predominance of male characters and the female characters you do have tend to lack the nuance and wide degree of choices.

Watching all three, and more, has always reminded me of being the only girl in my friend groups as a child when we played as characters from popular movies. Granted, I didn't want to be the literal only female character available in most of those movies anyway, they were simply not my kinds of characters, and looking back at it, it is kind of gross that my default option as an afab child was a single sexualized female love interest or simply, the sassy love interest. The hostility even as a five-year-old was intense when I refused to play as one of them and insisted on being one of the male characters instead...it was worse the few times when I got much older, like teen older, and did sort of genderbent takes on costumes for things like Halloween. Would have been fine if I was doing it as Sexy Main Character, but since it was simply Implied Gender Swap Main Character, oh no. Not acceptable!

It reminds me of all this because everyone who is comfortable with the choices they have refuse to accept anyone else's choices that have to be redesigned. And, people, look...I understand if someone doesn't like how that changes their canon interaction with the story and their own character, I don't understand vilifying someone for it. Just. Don't. Interact. Like so many things muns have a fit about, genderbending characters are never going to be the majority take, they're never going to be capable of pressuring you to interact purely because of that. No one is forcing anyone to like something or participate in it, I don't even say that someone can't complain about it in their own spaces, just let people live their lives without bringing harassment and trivializing serious matters like transphobia into it.

I think that a lot of the issue stems from the sort of community we have. Bad things generate bad things. The RPC has always been primarily made up of women and a ton of identities from the queer community, this was a safe space for many types of marginalized people to explore and participate uniquely in fandom with each other. Unfortunately, because so many of us are marginalized people, when we're aware that many of our platforms are infiltrated by bad actors, we start seeing them everywhere. Our own bad actors start weaponizing that suspicion and the language.

When it comes to women, there is the idea in fandom, absolutely coming from misogynistic ideas, that all women are interested in are "deviant," sexual stories and ruining spaces with their gross girl things. All women want romance novels, but make it more problematic. In itself, this idea is problematic lol romance novels are quietly popular because they're written as a different sort of fantasy-fulfillment that returns agency to female characters, allows them to be sexual without punishment, and makes them desirable as people, among other things. Any time a RPer is cisgendered female, especially if they are also heterosexual or lesbian, they are instantly categorized as a problem. You're automatically a radfem, a terf, you're fetishizing, etc. That's how any decision you make is going to be addressed.

So, coincidentally, one of the most visible groups doing genderbending is women and it's now transphobic.

I think you're right that it's an issue of "my oppression is worse than you're oppression, and you're now oppressing me." It's unfortunately true that we have women in the RPC that have some really poor takes and actions, but it's also true that we have everyone else here that does as well. This is divisive, and division among the marginalized benefits no one in that category.

All it's doing is exactly what you've said, it's giving a free pass to ignore the problem everyone is dealing with. There are a plethora of cis male characters only. If you don't want to write one, well, your two options are the tiny handful of consolation prize female characters that are nothing like the male ones or writing a transfem character. That's not alright. Turning this into stakes that benefit no one in this community is not alright. Sending people death threats and running them out of the community by essentially blackballing them as being transphobes is not alright. Whom do you people doing this think it is benefiting?

Genderbending a character isn't erasing a trans character. There aren't any canon trans characters in Lord of the Rings, in Marvel's cinematic universe, in Star Wars' film universe, in DC's film universe, I could keep going. Having a very hard time thinking of any hugely popular franchise that has a single canon, on screen depiction of a trans character. Your options are male or female, cisgendered. So, you're literally not erasing what isn't there to erase, for one.

Additionally, making a male canon female and not portraying them as trans isn't doing so either. RPers are not representation. It is, again, perfectly fine to be your own representation, we literally have to do this if we want to write characters more like us as individuals, but it's no one's job here to give you what Hollywood won't. RPers do not have to make themselves uncomfortable and inevitably be harassed for doing it wrong, or honestly, doing it wrong and being highly offensive because they were pressured. RPers are not obligated to interact with each other, either.

Not being comfortable writing with a trans iteration does not make one inherently transphobic either, you're not talking about real people here. If you won't interact with a real trans person, you're transphobic, yes. If you are uncomfortable interacting with a trans RP character, you probably have a valid reason - this damn RPC. It's alright to not want to interact with someone who makes one facet of a character the only facet, or who will become aggressive and accusatory if you don't agree to every plot, ship, etc. supposedly because their character is trans (or anything else). I'm sorry, I know that being treated badly online and off makes one suspicious and ready to jump to accusations and assumptions of others, but it's this very inclination that makes other RPers hesitant to interact with some folks in the RPC.

No, before anyone says it, no one here is under any obligation to be good representation and educational material who is infinitely positive and tolerant as a real, live human being. That's not what I'm saying. Just that the reality has become one of easy and quick accusations that are making other people wary of interacting. No one wants to be accused of being transphobic, racist, misogynistic, or ableist because they don't find your iteration of a character or original character compelling, they don't think you'll mesh as muns and writers, or they don't like any iteration of that character. Maybe, those people are also uncomfortable with how you've acted on the dash, maybe, they're concerned that if they or their character makes a mistake or they need to ask you a sensitive question OOC that pertains to the RP, that you'll explode and label them.

When you create a character who is not the usual, and in popular fandoms, yes, that's neurotypical cishet white male, you have to realize that you're going to run into people who literally don't know about the situations you're putting them into. Not everyone is educated to the same degree or in the same ways, not everyone is, knows, has relatives, or has been in relationships with someone who is ND, trans, a different race, whatever. You have actually opened yourself up to a unique situation, if someone is wanting to write with you, they are also open to learning and you shouldn't be vicious to them when they need to do exactly that.

For example, I witnessed, a few years ago, a RPer get run out of the RPC in my fandom for asking a mun an innocent question, privately, about how they should be approaching a smut scene with the mun's trans character. Their whole point was that they were really afraid of having their character do the wrong thing, say the wrong thing, be offensive. They simply didn't know, and honestly, every person is unique. Every cisgendered person, every trans person, is unique. That they were treating this as an opportunity to appreciate the uniqueness of how this mun's character wished to be viewed etc. and to educate themselves beyond what they had available online, which can be a ton of contrary takes since, again, all individuals, should have been a good thing. The question wasn't impolite, fetishizing, or otherwise gross, either. They were quick to put it up in the callout. Yes, that's an uncomfortable situation, but it was prefaced well, phrased well, and respectful. This person was just trying to be a responsible, respectful, RP partner and ally. They got weeks of death threats, accusations, and bullying that only ended when they deleted their account.

That's what people are afraid of, it is not an unreasonable fear. No more than running into a legitimate transphobe is. We've got to stop treating each other with this kind of automatic suspicion and hostility.

When fear runs things, we all lose.

Anyway, Anon, I'm so sorry that things are like this. No one needs to be happy with the scraps of mega-fandoms or be "transphobic."

I don't dislike the female characters that LotR has, some of them I like quite a bit, but they fall into character types and tropes that do not appeal to me as a writer. Meanwhile, I can think of three male LotR characters that do without trying. Same thing with the MCU, I enjoy two female characters, though both of them I did enjoy much more in the comics, admittedly. However, neither would I wish to write for the same reasons - they both fall into character types and stories that aren't for me as a writer. Again, I can think of a handful of male characters who do. If I wasn't comfortable writing male characters, genderbending would be my choice as well to resolve this problem and remain in my comfort zone as someone who doesn't feel comfortable speaking on myriad trans experiences not my own.

You're not doing anything that the rest of us are not, Anon. We're all out here trying to adapt characters and have fun with them! You do not deserve harassment for that.

I have a buzz cut, I don't have a hair brush anymore.

Are you typically too warm or too cold?

Too warm. I have been warmer than most people my whole life, and I often need to sleep with a fan on.

What were you doing 45 minutes ago?

Working on a sketch for an MTH fill (update from the end of this: I have spent an hour doing this fuckin thing)

What is your favourite candy bar?

Bounty. My favourite candy is Reese’s Pieces but I like a bounty. Or like, and chocolate without fruit in it tbh.

Have you ever been to a professional sports event?

Yes, one of my parents referees Championship Football here in the UK. I have been to a few of his games. I also went to the London 2012 Paralympic closing ceremony, if that counts.

What is the last thing you said out loud?

‘Oh, this will last me a few days’ I was talking to my mother about 1/2 a can of pringles, I was lying.

What is your favourite ice cream?

Vanilla. I am boring. But the best ice cream i’ve had was a cream/milk flavoured gelato in Florence, that shit slapped. I also like cheap strawberry ice cream when no one is trying to put strawberry bits in it.

What was the last thing you had to drink?

Dinner. A spinach, banana, summer fruits and coconut yoghurt smoothie (with extra raspberries). Its my nightly dinner to cheat more veg into my body.

Do you like your wallet?

Very much. It’s about 7-8 years old, it is faded to hell but it has spiderman and a pony ride stony pin

What was the last thing you ate?

See above smoothie comment, but if that doesn't count, a sugar free mint polo.

Did you buy any new clothes last weekend?

Nope. I don't buy as many clothes as I want to, bc mens clothes in larger sizes are hard to find or expensive here.

F1, I don't keep up but I watch a little with my dad every now and then.

BUTTER. They don't really have it here, and I don't go to movies much when in the states. But @festiveferret introduced me to it when we saw Ant-man and the Wasp, and much like poutine and Tim Hortons, I still crave it.

My dad.

Ever go camping?

Yes, I was a Scout. I have done enough camping to not want to do more, it was fun when I wasn't organising it.

Do you take vitamins?

Yes, but not as often as I should, and as much as my mother bothers me too.

Nope, not even when I considered myself christian. I go only go to church for other peoples events, and I’m an agnostic now.

Do you have a tan?

I cannot tan. I just can't, I burn lobster red in 5 minutes outside without literal sun cream for BABIES

Do you prefer Chinese food or pizza?

Chinese food, It was easily what taught me to like more foods also, I don't eat tomato so I can't have most pizza. I love a good garlic base/bechamel, but you can't really get that here easily (yes yes I could make my own but that ruins half the point of pizza)

Do you drink your soda with a straw?

I don't drink carbonated drinks, because its like drinking pain. The fuck is wrong with all of you.

What colour socks do you usually wear?

Various colours, but I consider red on the left, blue on the right, my lucky socks. No I don't know why, but I take all exams and interviews wearing them. It’s just a thing.

Do you ever drive above the speed limit?

I don't drive, but if I did, No. Theres a lot of questionable laws out there but Traffic laws aren't one of them.

What terrifies you?

Pfft, most things from spiders to rollercoasters. But more seriously, Being shouted at. Shout at me and I start hyperventilating, its a thing. Also not knowing if someone is mad at me. I’m not good at reading people,

What chore do you hate?

Vacuuming. It makes everything in my body hurt. I would rather clean toilets.

I don't generally eat beef, lamb, or most red meats. I love crispy chilly beef, but as anyone can point out its bc your generally don't feel the texture of the beef.

Friday nights. The weekend is ahead and @loraneldin and I take to wrangling our beloved usual suspects through another week of Ults Book Club.

I can barely say it forwards.

How do you like your coffee?

With milk and sugar, or ultimately, in a Caramel Frappuccino bc I'm a bitch like that.

Favourite pair of shoes?

I have walking boots that don't make my flat ass feet feel like they’re dying. OR my black and green crocs (Fight me, they’re useful).

The time you normally go to sleep?

9-10 is what I'm working on, but I fluctuate depending on if I'm working on something or not.

The time you normally get up?

5-6 If I have a choice in the matter, but often 7-8 if I didn't get to bed at the right time. I’m more about getting the right hours in for my diet than time specifically.

What do you prefer, sunrise or sunsets?

Sunset is the prettiest, but I like to be awake to see the sun rise.

How many blankets on your bed?

One big thick comforter, because that's the uk standard, and I get too hot otherwise.

Describe your kitchen plates

Two types, big wide white ones with a navy blue rim. They are so large I never use them, and little Navy saucer plates I use a lot.

Do you have a favourite alcoholic beverage?

I don't drink, so no. I drink apple juice or Shirley temples when I'm in pubs/bars

Sometimes, I like to teach people to play Old Maid. It’s the monopoly of card games.

What colour is your car?

Again, I do not drive.

Can you change a tire?

I am aware I just said I don't have a car, but I do know how to change a tire. Everyone should go learn its pretty simple.

Favourite job you’ve ever had?

I have only had one job really and two job experience jobs. I did experience in a school library for a week and that was v fun and chill. I did all the jobs they had prepared for me in 2 days so I alphabetically reorganised their fiction section for the rest of the week. I LIKE ORDERING.

How did you get your biggest scar?

I no longer have a gallbladder, so I have 3 scars across my torso from that, the biggest right in the middle of my ribs. Non surgical wise I have matching scars on my knees from ripping holes in them when tripping. I have weak ankles and also I got both of those at different times.

What did you do today that made someone else happy?

I gave my spare animal crossing Iguanodon skull to a wicked artist I follow on twitter so he could complete his dino park.

“Peyton, help me.”

“How are you expecting me to help, if I have no idea what you’re talking about?”

“I think I’m in love with Lola?”

Peyton stared at her best friend in disbelief for a moment. “Excuse me, what?”

“Like, I’m so impressed by her? She’s like, seriously smart, and absolutely gorgeous by the way — I can’t make sense of how a person just naturally that pretty? — and like, her way of speaking so articulate? She’s just- I think she might be who I’ve been looking for all this time?”, the brunette girl sighed, almost sounding lovesick.

“Woah there, hold your horses, Ramona, don’t get your hopes too high, you remember what happened the last time you thought a girl was the one?”

“Yeah, kinda weird how Remedee and Delaney are already engaged-”

“Exactly!”

“Well, I don’t think Remedee would be Lola’s type or the other way around, and like I said, the’re engaged, Patty.”

The blonde rolled her eyes and adjusted her glasses. Usually she’d be ecstatic to help her friend in these kinda situation, but she’s been hurt twice in a row and this was a different kind of crush or being in love than Delaney or even Ramona's Ex-Girlfriend.

This was Lola.

Their best friend.

The only reason she had met Virginia.

This was completely different.

She needed proof that this wasn’t going to flop.

“Give me three days.”, Peyton suddenly said, looking back at the girl in front of her. “Then I’ll give you an estimate on if this will work and how long it will take. Sound good?”

Ramona jumped up and hugged the blonde with so much impact, that they almost fell off the coffee table that Peyton had been seated on. “Thank you so much!”

After she got back up, Ramona dusted herself off and smiled sweetly. “I’ll be off then, Rem asked me if I wanted to join her and Dee at Dinner tonight. She claimed that Dee set her up to ask me, but when I said that I was at your place, she looked like a lost puppy, so I had to say yes.”, she chuckled. “So, I’ll text you?”

“See you, Rori!”, Peyton called after her ash she watched her escape through the front door of the apartment. “Virge! I need to talk to you right now!”

Her purple haired roommate and girlfriend stepped out of the room, a black ball of fur on her arm and a grumpy look on her face. “Whaaaat? Pandora and I were trying to take a nap back there, you know?”

“Sorry, Stormcloud, I need you to dig around a bit for me, though.”, She explained got up from the table, heading toward the slightly shorter girl. “You’re adorable, you know? Oh and, Virge, I think you’re okay, too.”

Virginia just stared at her in disbelief. “Who are you and what have you done with my girlfriend? You must’ve finally met Remedee, was she here instead of Ramona and tinted your innocence?”

“Honestly, you’re terrible.”, she deadpanned before kissing the girl on the cheek. “Let’s go cuddle with Pandora and then I’ll explain what’s up?”

“Sounds fantastic.”

After a while of them just lazily petting the furball that Pandora was, Peyton began to speak.

“Ramona is all head over heels for Lola.”

Virginia froze for a moment before jerking her head to the side to look at the blonde. “You’re kidding, right?”

“Why would I be! This is terrible!”

“No, actually, this is fucking perfect!”

Peyton gasped, though it was rather fake, she knew she wasn’t going to be able to change her girlfriends habit of cursing in every situation. Nonetheless, she followed the sound with a rather squeaky “Language!”

“So, why is it perfect?”

“Remember the call that woke us up last night? Lola needed advice. She couldn’t sleep, which is old news, I know, but!”, she paused for dramatic effect. “This wasn’t casual insomnia, Lola and I both know what that feels like and that wasn’t it. Her mind was twisting and turning and no matter what happened, her thoughts drifted to our perfect little princess!”

Peyton squeaked, in excitement this time. “And I have the perfect plan!”, she exclaimed before pulling out her phone and texting her brunette friend.

RAMONA I GOT A SOLUTION

I saw, you doofus. I need’a eat with Miss Remedee Kathrina Prince and her girlfriend, miss Delaney Guja for dinner, if you’d excuse me?

A few weeks after that, the friend group met for their yearly Christmas party, which was more of a calm get together, if you ignored Remedee’s whole behavior, this year it was held at the shared place of Emilie and Ramona.

Peyton and Virginia thought this to be the perfect opportunity to carry out their plan. And they also had a woman on the inside.

Although Emelie wasn’t too keen on just playing with her friends feelings and getting into their relationship, she agreed when the girlfriends explained that both girls had deeply fallen for each other and that they had their reasons to ask for help.

The party was, like every year, set on the night of the 25th. It had been going rather calm, even Remedee was slightly reserved, which had scared Peyton and Ramona a slight bit, but she didn’t mention it, and they had all just exchanged gifts and everyone was being rather cutesy about it.

There were kisses and hugs everywhere, which had Peyton’s heart melting, she loved how they were all just a big family.

After Virginia had slightly hinted at the more-than-friends behavior René and Emelie had toward each other and that they had to find out what that was later, she reminded her girlfriend of their mission. They gave Emelie a small sign that they had talked about before and got to work.

The smallest of the bunch had excused herself to go to the bathroom, her girlfriend had distracted her best friend with some cute photos she had taken of Pandora. And maybe some couple pictures, but Virginia didn’t need to know that.

Emelie had gotten to her part, talking to Lola about the psychology behind dreams, it was a subject she knew the black haired couldn’t resist.

Perfect.

While the plan had been going as it was planned, Remedee and René had sneaked into the kitchen to pop the first bottle of champagne. That would be a problem that the bunch would have to deal with later.

Delaney had to leave earlier, her little sister, Amber, had called, it was something urgent, but she didn’t tell the others why, just that it would be fine and they should continue having fun.

“So basically, our little sunshine is… Actually a sunshine? Or are you just that good at photoshop?”, Ramona had asked, laughing.

Peyton had tried for quite a while to get Ramona in the right position, they needed all of it to be perfect, and had grown frustrated at this point.

How do you make a person move backwards?

As Emelie had noticed that, she gave her friend the tiniest of nods, trying to communicate to her, that she got it.

Because, in comparison to Ramona, Lola didn’t like to be too close to people, so if Emilie moved closer to the black haired, she would subconsciously walk backwards.

That did the job, both unbelievably oblivious girls were now standing back to back, with Peyton and Emilie smiling at each other, hoping the girls wouldn’t notice.

Virginia, who had never went to the bathroom in the first place, had been impatiently waiting on top of the staircase, a huge grin on her face.

“Yo! Teach, Princey!”, she yelled and held her arm out over them.

Peyton held back a squeal while Emilie quietly chuckled.

The mentioned girls were both looking up to see the small arrangement the purple haired was holding.

A mistletoe.

Lola was the first to look down from it and turned to her crush, staring for a bit.

After a while of mentally cursing every single Disney villain she could think of, and that were a lot, Ramona also decided to look away from the mistletoe. Lola was as red as her favorite dress, and the brunette suspected that she’d look the same. “Well, I- I know the rules but if you- I mean we don’t gotta, you know? Like, if you're not wanting to, that’s fine with me- I just-”

While Ramona was trying to form a sentence, Lola considered her chances.

It was a fifty/fifty in her book. Either she would be rejected, or not. She was gonna regret it anyway, but who cared. She would take advantage of that moment.

So Lola did a thing that no one expected, she grabbed the collar of her crushes shirt and pulled her close. “Zip it.”

And then her lips were on Ramona’s.

Virginia almost let the mistletoe fall on top of them in the attempt to keep her composure and took a few pictures short after, the angle possibly not the best, but she knew none of the technically unoccupied girls would be able to move apart from the grins that were getting wider by the second.

As Ramona stood there frozen, thanking whatever deity helped her, Lola grew more and more anxious over her decision. She was about to pull back when the brunette put her arms around her neck and kissed back.

Que a wolf whistle from the general direction of the kitchen.

“Get some, sis!”, was yelled, rather drunkenly.

Both immediately jumped back and Ramona turned to her sister. “Rem!”, she yelled, her voice cracking. “Why?”

“Well, you know?”, Remedee said, still sounding very drunk, getting closer to the bunch with René trailing behind, “Revenge.”

And the way she said it, so serious and sober, had almost scared Ramona, until her twin started laughing and almost falling over.

The brunette girl turned to her best friend. “Peyton?”

“Don’t at me! You granted me permission to do anything!”

“So you decided to make my roommate pull a Brutus on me? How considerate.”

“I asked. And if it weren’t for Virginia I wouldn’t have been able to do it!”

Lola just blinked for a while before clearing her throat. “Excuse me?”

“Riiiiight... So you weren’t in for any of it but I kinda broke my promise?”, Virginia started as she was supporting René and standing with the group.

The black haired raised an eyebrow. “Virginia?”

She sighed and decided to load the literal weight on her shoulders onto Emelie and also finally get rid of the metaphorical one of breaking a promise. “Ramona told Peyton she likes you the day after you so graciously woke me and my cat up because you couldn’t sleep because you’re too gay for this shit. So we talked and figured out we needed to get you two together and well,” the girl looked at her accomplices. “We didn’t think you’d be the one to initiate that. So I’m not sure about these two, but I’m still stunned.”

“So you planned that.”

“Yes.”

“And you all knew about it.”

“Pretty much?”

“And all of you kept shut in front of me?”

“Looks like it.”

Lola nodded. “I’m impressed. That’s literally the first thing ever that you were able to keep from me.”

Peyton’s face lit up. “You’re not mad?”

“Babe, we literally had her and her crush kissing, why would she be mad?”

“Good point.”

Ramona, who was kind of embarrassed at this point, just linked arms with Lola and let her away from the group, so they were sitting on the couch now, talking. Both of them still had the slightest tints of pink on their faces, but both had smiles on their faces.

“Mission accomplished!”, Peyton said, looking back to the others, wanting to hug both her teammates, until she saw how Emilie had to try to keep René away from trying to kiss her.

“You need help there, Em?”, Virginia had asked with a smirk.

“Nope, I’m fine! It’s fine! I’m good.”

And just like that, the team had another mission. Taking care of two drunk disasters who were absolutely horrible.

At least two of them woke up without headaches the next morning.

Gwenspiration: The Wacky Version Vol. 3 - The Moodboards

So, here I go again parading myself and tooting like there is no tomorrow.

As people still brave enough to follow me on Tumblr will know, I do a lot of moodboards, or at least I call them such. Others call them collages or storyboards or pictures with random text. Either way, for me, moodboards became a neat tool to somehow capture story ideas not yet anywhere near a level that I could write fic about them - or serve as inspirations for fics I am actually writing.

And it gives me opportunity to hoard unhealthy amounts of Gwen and Nik pics, in the name of moodboards. And science. And stuff. Whoozah!

So yeah, in this post, I want to share some of my personal favorites. A lot of them actually, because I can’t decide, really.

I will start off with a group of moodboards which took inspiration from the Marvel universe, since the Marvel universe was my gateway into the more active parts of fandom.

An all-time fave is the Iron Man AU... I mean, what not to love about a JB AU with Jaime as sassy Tony Stark and Brienne as the not-taking any shit from you army doctor, am I right? But yeah, seriously, Jaime *is* the Tony Stark of the GOT universe, and I can’t be convinced otherwise. And neither should be you.

Also, the Iron Man suits just totally fit the color scheme for both, which made creating the moodboards all the better for me. Jaime and Brienne were made for armor, now in medieval or modern times, let’s not kid ourselves.

Another Marvel fave has got to be Captain Westeros. Because if there is a female GOT Version of Steve Rogers, it’s gotta be Brienne of fuckin’ Tarth. This one is really close to my heart because it gave me a lot of feels coming up with plot bunnies for it, and the tragedy of those two people missing each other in time over and over again, always trying to protect one another, only to end up on opposite sides because of the machinations of others... *sigh*

And I mean, one guy loses an arm. The other is blond and strong... I don’t make the rules but this delivers me enough material to re-imagine this as a JB AU... so yeah, I do kinda make the rules after all. Anyway.

Since I realized that this post’s gonna get even looooonger, I decided to make a cut here and put the rest below, so not to have you scrolling for five hours.

Although it’s not the most popular moodboard amongst my followers (you brave people, I can’t parade you enough for staying through the madness lol), I really, really love that Fantastic Four moodboard and the concept behind it. And I just know a lot of effort went into making Valyrian Steel Brienne, which took all of my three computer editing skillz brain cells. But yeah, here again, I liked to play with the idea of them not admitting to their love until shit hits the fan and then they hide behind that because... drama, angst, feels, pining, yadda.

Jurassic Park (aka Valyrian Park) evidently holds a special place in my heart because JB fighting dinosaur-dragon hybrids and kicking ass while being disbelieving about what was bred out in Valyria thanks to some certain someones to rescue Brienne’s adoptive daughter Arya is just... a thing? For me anyway.

More down memory lane, I don’t know how often I watched the LOTR movies, suffice to say it was a lot a lot. We had the extended versions DVDs of the first two and basically it was the one thing to watch when nothing was on (which was the case a lot). Either way. JB in MIddle Earth long after the days of Frodo et al. - why? Because I just loved the idea (and aesthetic) of Jaime as a ranger and Brienne as a knight of Gondor working in disguise. And Hobbipod. I mean, Pod as a Hobbit. Come the fuck on. And Tyrion as an asshole wizard. What could possibly go wrong? This moodboard was very time-consuming as I had to do a lot of edits (pointy ears, tiny up people, smudge Brienne’s face on a lot of Boromir and Faramir images, smudge Jaime’s face on a lot of Aragorn images, you name it). So yeah. No matter its popularity... I dig it. Despite not having read the books yet (I know, shocking), I continue to ogle at the idea and go like: Must. Write. But. Must. Resist. Either way. Mood.

So yeah, I grew up watching these movies a lot, too (I grew up watching a lot of TV, period). And when Gwen was cast as Captain Phasma, I got a lot of JB juices flowing as a result. Mehe. I found it was a fun idea to play with, to basically *kill* Phasma so *Brienne* can come into play and assume her identity. And a rundown Jedi!Jaime who’s lost faith in himself and everything else safe for his partner in crime/resistance is just... I needz. So you gotta cope with it. I still adore this concept a lot even if others may not. :)

This one’s just... gah. Feels. And I really liked the color scheme lol. And I watched Horse Whisperer A LOT. Because of feels. And horses. And Honor is a horse and he deserved better than be barbecued at Highgarden, dammit.

The No Reservations AU definitely has to be in this post because I live for this dynamic. Brienne taking care of the girls, not knowing how, though, constantly doubting herself while always trying to be perfect and composed, not just in life but on the job as well. And Jaime being the laid-back guy who’s just a darn good chef but may carry his own baggage of problems that keep him from his happy ending story is just... mah jam.

This one was a lot of fun to do because you don’t really think about Erin Brockovich when you say Brienne of Tarth in terms of character. But when you scratch away the boob jokes and the differences in where they come from, what you find are two hard-working women who fight for justice, so I found that close enough. And it was excuse enough for me to go down the lane of biker!Jaime because... dayum.

Music and Lyrics is an all-time guilty pleasure romcom of mine. It’s so light and easy and I kind of love how everyone is basically a bunch of awkward losers. All the more perfect for Jaime as a singer (we need that in our lives after the infamous video Nik was in to sing to us about global warming...) and Brienne as the unexpectedly gifted songwriter. What I like about the moodboard per se is how the color scheme turned out because it’s all warm and bright and... makes me happy.

Very much in contrast to the former stands this one. I still love the overall mood of it and I dig the story idea because I dug both The Prestige and The Illustionist because they presented something dark yet very different, which made it all the more appealing to put into a moodboard for me. While not the most well-known moodboard of mine, I keep going back to it time and time again to basically lust at all the illusions and magic and drama. And blue butterflies.

What is there not to love about a Pacific Rim AU for JB, am I right? Right?! JB ain’t just compatible when it comes to the Drift, yo, that’s all I’m gonna say. Reasons why I like the moodboard a lot is that it’s very different, flashy colors, gigantic robots, and I was mostly alright with how the edits turned out. It is tough to get images that fit the angles, yo.

Jumping back in time once more, I really adore this one even though it’s not one of my popular moodboards. I dug the fusion of elements from Cinderella Man while granting Brienne as the female lead more space to develop as a character and make her a badass sniper nurse who is about to get her doctor’s degree. And Jaime doing anything to make it work because he owes her a debt (and his love) by boxing his way to their shared life is just... nice.

Another supposedly lesser known moodboard is this one, though I really adore it for its premise and the amount of work I put into it (all the giffing and moodboarding). I also found use for that image of Gwen with what looks like the veil of a nun, which was probably what had me inspired in the first place lol. The plot bunnies revolve less around Se7en and more the novel El ùltimo Catón (2001) because it has a nun solving a mystery revolving around Dante’s works. But Se7en gives us the Seven, which is a delicious parallel too hard to ignore. For me at least. If only I knew how to write crime, dammit.

Now, to move more into the serial (smooth transition from serial killer to serial TV shows, I know, I know) way of life, here is some moodboards inspired by TV shows (although some have since gotten movies which I also took inspiration from... yadda):

Childhood memory galore. I spent many weekends watching The A-Team with the whole family. When the movie came out, I was happy about the feels it gave me (and the “you spin my head right round” scene still cracks me up more often than it should). Either way. I found it absolutely necessary for Jaime to be Face, for Tyrion to be Hannibal, for Bronn to be B.A. and cuss at everyone and everything and Brienne giving us the strangest genderbend of a Howling Mad Murdock. It added some angst, which I always need because I am a thirsty hoe for it. In case no one noticed yet. Ha.

This one is very remotely inspired by The Bletchley Circle and the Imitation Game (because both feature encryption and one features Charles Dance already, yo.) I just really dug the idea of Brienne being so good at this because she is such a straight thinker but being underestimated because “she a woman.” And of course her not being done just encoding messages but getting into action, very much to the dismay of the stupid soldier wanting to defend the bae from harm. What could possibly go wrong? Right. A lot.

Then. Elementary. Let me count the ways in which I love that show... ALL THE WAYS. And I really dig it as a JB AU. I have so many thoughts and feelings, I can’t even begin to tell you. I especially had my fun basically making Jaime Sherlock without making him really Sherlock because that guy was the one who taught him how to be an investigator before disappearing and fucking up his life for bad. And Brienne as the army doctor turned sober companion turned private investigator turned love interest is just too delicious to ignore.

Pants down I mean hands down, this may be the actual favorite (currently) amongst them all for the plain reason that I also grew up watching that series and still watch it and keep obsessing about it. Ever since Discovery launched and has since given me both joy and grief, I found myself intrigued by the premise of a JB Star Trek AU where Brienne would be standing *with* the Klingons during the war around the time Discovery takes place, and Captain Jaime Lannister having lost far too much to this war already to truly trust anyone, even less so a woman who ran to the Klingons, for what it seems.

You would not believe how many ideas I have for a fic based on it. You wouldn’t believe that I basically have a sequel to that fic already in mind. And you would definitely believe, knowing me, that I am nowhere near writing that fic. But a fangirl can dream and moodboard, right? The moodboard was such a fun way of going about it, not only for the edits but because I could sneak some secret Klingon messages in there. :)

Now, on to the last part, which are the moodboards not inspired by movies or TV shows primarily but really just spewed out of my wacky, wacky brain:

This has a special place in my heart because it combines military and the traumas it comes with for JB and.... the aesthetic of farming. And both finding a kind of peace they didn’t know they were looking for as they struggle to adjust and find their way back “to normal” after the horrors they have both seen in war. And did I mention the aesthetic? And Jaime in plaid? All dirty and sweaty? Do I have to say more?

Why this one? Because it combines angst and romance and falling in love twice because DESTINY. And paintings. I love me my artist AUs. So that was my go at it, combining it with the “mystery” to be uncovered about what history Jaime and Brienne actually share as he tries to put his memories back together. Also. This moodboard gave me opportunity to try out new filters and create JB paintings. :)

This one’s gotta be on the list since I also added the Horse Whisperer. Now it’s Dog Whisperer Jaime and Brienne who won’t give up on her dog who’s seen some shit in the warzone (as did she, but Brienne will put it all aside for her doggish best buddy, of course). While it’s not a very popular moodboard of mine, I really enjoy the premise of it and how the dynamics can so easily change between the two of them if you see it in comparison to the Horse Whisperer AU. Also. I just really think Jaime is a total pet person.

Another lesser known moodboard, I’d assume, but I really dug the premise of it (still do), and it was intriguing to do some edits to make Jaime’s hand *truly* golden lol. With people having developed strange mutations which aren’t nearly as much fun as they are in Fantastic Four AUs. What I liked about it was the idea that Brienne would have a kind of mutation/ability that links to the mind, since she is such a physically strong fighter that she may rather rely on that than on her own mind, fearing that she cannot control that with discipline the same way she can train her body with it. What unites the two is their strong wish to protect the people in their care, in a world on the verge of collapse forcing two unexpected allies together (okay, I totally expected it, but they didn’t). Either way. Much love for this one. :)

Aaaand the last one (not of all the ones I made but the ones I picked for Gwenspiration). I really, really, really adore this one because I was so happy with how the aesthetic turned out and how the colors all match. And I dig the premise. Like holy moly do I dig it deep. Jaime and Brienne both serving in military, but on different fronts, and almost accidentally ending up writing each other letters? I mean... the PINING. And Brienne having to decipher Jaime’s chickenscratch. Yeah no, but for real. I just love the idea so much. That they are both committed to the cause while also yearning for a home, for peaceful times, for sweet, sweet love. And them meeting up and acting like stupid teenagers, only for drama to keep hitting because. It’s eh me angsty Wacky.

Either way. I dig the premises of a lot of my moodboards (in fact... basically all of them or else I wouldn’t be making them, I guess). I spared you listing all of them, though I listed a whole damn lot already. Moodboards are an awesome means for me personally to visualize and (re-)imagine. And since quite a few people seem to continue to be onboard with them, I am all the happier to keep making them.

FANFIC TROPES

I was tagged by @emospritelet <3 <3

I would like to thank her for including me in this little exercise, it's made me think about a lot of things, so... as per usual, I'm bending the rules. Oh, I'll (try and) choose one over the other of the options, but I'll also give a brief explanation below (not required by the original game). Also, I may add some of these tropes to my 'prompt' list, because there's some I've not ever tried.

So here goes:

slowburn or love at first sight

There's a lot to be said for slow burn, but why does it have to be mutually exclusive? I love a good story where there is that hint of love at first sight but for whatever reason it's never acted upon for the /longest/ time. There's nothing like UST if you ask me and I recently read somewhere that 'There can be no Lust without UST.'

fake dating or secret dating

These are two tropes that I've not actually tried to write, and I don't really think I've read too much of, though Gold's propensity for keeping his personal life to himself in most fics pushes me toward the 'secret dating' side of things, as does the teacher/student kind of story... which now I come to think of it I /am/ writing in All Our Past Mistakes, so... there you are. Secret for me.

enemies to lovers or best friends to lovers

Actually here's one from which I can't make a choice. I can't see the potential in both but for me it seems they would both be very different. Coming close with the 'We Three' series, but I wouldn't actually say that Belle and Rush are enemies per se, rather just very antagonistic toward one another.

oh no there’s only one bed or long-distance correspondence

Okay, though I've not tried writing either of these, (I've lived one of them, and it's hard and soul destroying). I would love to see how other fic writers handle the 'one bed' conundrum. - might try it at some point myself. :)

hurt/comfort or amnesia

Without a doubt my favorite is hurt/comfort. I'm an angsty kind of writer. Of course there can be angst in amnesia too, just... not my thing I guess.

fantasy au or modern au

If you're going AU, for me it has to be a 'modern' AU, and I put that in quotes because for me 'modern' includes historical as well, so maybe 'realistic' instead of fantasy. Of course I've not tried the fantasy AU, and the one I've /read/ that comes to mind, I enjoyed, so... anyway, as far as writing goes, then modern.

mutual pining or domestic bliss

Pining for me. There's a lot to be said for domestic bliss, but I have trouble writing fluff... though I do enjoy reading it.

smut or fluff

Love me some smut or a hint of mature, but here's the thing, why can't fluff be smutty too?

canon-compliant or fix-it

Again, can't really choose. See, I did a huge fix-it AU series (never did finish it but I still have the plans...) in my Stargate Virtual Season 5, but even in fix-its, I don't like to completely 'throw the baby out with the bathwater' as it were. I like fixits that are as canon-compliant, or include many elements of canon-compliance.

reincarnation or character death

See this is another where I can't really choose, and for me they're not really mutually exclusive, since one has to occur before the other could happen. I've written reincarnation stories - not fics though - and I'm planning a character death (if I've got the balls to go through with it, because it's hard. I did it once, and OMG it hurt.) so... we'll have to see. If I had to make a choice, for the sake of angst, I'd say character death.

one-shot or multi chapter

I would love to be better at one shots, but... my brain doesn't seem to work that way, so - multi chapter, and/or series for me.

kid fic or road trip fic

Um...I haven't ever written either, but I'm enjoying reading a series of fics that have elements of both kid fic and road trip fic in them. (Growing Up - @peacehopeandrats)

arranged marriage or accidental marriage

I haven't written either, and though I know there are a few arranged marriage fics out there, I haven't read any of them. (Unless you count the arranged marriage that never quite happens Gaston/Belle fics). Not sure how one could have an accidental marriage (unless by that its means the kind of 'shot-gun' wedding kinda thing). The idea of both almost appeal.

high school romance or middle aged romance

More mature romances are my style - and I'm not speaking of content necessarily.

time travel or isolated together

There's so much research in time travel, I'd never get anything written... and there's always that butterfly effect kinda thing going on there. Stuck together for some reason, and come on, we're living a pandemic people, great scope for fics (right Sprite?). Maybe time to delve into that a little bit.

neighbors or roommates

Um... I guess neighbors works. I mean roommates works too but with the genre I'm mostly writing, and my preference for 'middle aged' then roommates doesn't exactly work well.

sci-fi au or magic au

Well, I can't really choose here, I really can't. That's like asking me to choose between Rumbelle and Rushbelle, so just... no.

body swap or genderbend

Neither really appeals here, I think I'd be uncomfortable writing either, and I don't think I've read either either, so I can't really make an informed choice. Recommendations, anyone? (I mean, aside from enjoying Quantum Leap when I watched it - does that count?)

angst or crack

Without a doubt, angst! I'm not that much into comedy at the best of times, I really have to be in the mood, but crack that takes that to the n'th degree is really not my thing.

apocalyptic or mundane

For reasons I can't really go into, this is a tough one. LOL - Seriously though, I think I would go for the mundane as a matter of course, because the mundane is often so full of angst and story potential, you don't always need to base your fic on something that could bring about the next Apocalypse!

Stained With Love - Breaky Week Day 6

A/N: Prompt: Stage Wear. I can’t stop genderbending and I’m sorry. I just wanted to write some crushing lesbians.

“You’re staring.”

Johanna flinched and swirled around, coming face to face with Crystal who was leaning against a wall behind her. He was grinning, obviously amused by having caught her and came over to her to wrap his arm around her shoulders.

“I’m not staring.” She denied weakly, letting him pull her into a side-hug.

“Of course not, Deaky.”

She playfully swatted at him but wrapped her arm around his waist before bringing her attention back to the stage. They were just hanging out backstage because technically, neither of them were needed yet and they had nothing to do other than watching the actors rehearse. And in Johanna’s case, one actress in particular: Brianna.

Johanna’s little crush on Brianna had started a few months after she had joined their group. At first, she hadn’t really paid her much mind. Johanna didn’t really hang out with any of the actors except for Roger and Freddie but when they started hanging out with Brianna, Johanna happened to spend some time with her too. Brianna proved to be incredibly smart and witty and just fun to be around and- of course- Johanna developed a crush on her. Especially since she really appreciated the effort of the tech crew. All it needed for her to get a crush on someone was a pretty woman thanking her for her work and telling her she did a great job. It was kind of pathetic.

It didn’t help that Brianna was an amazing actress, too. She had a great stage presence. She didn’t demand all the attention like Freddie did as soon as he stepped on stage but she drew Johanna- and many others if she believed some of the reviews of their plays- in with her movements and voice. And what a voice she had. Johanna didn’t know a lot about singing except the things she gathered from being around Freddie and Roger but she didn’t need to know much to know that Brianna had a great voice.

She watched Brianna walk across the stage, wearing a pair of sweats and a loose, long-sleeved shirt that kept slipping off her shoulder while she read her lines off the script to Roger. Her hair was pulled into a messy bun with several strands framing her face and she kept brushing them behind her ear without success.

“You’re such a disaster.” Crystal teased her gently and she scoffed.

“Shut up. It’s not like she likes me back. She’s probably straight anyway.”

Crystal sighed and pulled her tighter against his side, squeezing her shoulder gently.

“You’re an idiot.”

Johanna scoffed again and rolled her eyes at him just to get distracted when Brianna really got into her monologue. She was gesturing wildly with one hand and Johanna fell a little bit more in love with her as she strutted across the stage, her face a mask of concentration.

She looked beautiful. Johanna sighed wistfully.

“Do you think Roger’s ass looks good in those pants?”

Johanna pulled a face, barely suppressing a disgusted sound and pushed Crystal away. He started laughing, shoulders shaking and pressed one hand over his mouth to not make any noise.

“You’re gross! That’s Roger. Don’t talk about his ass to me! I don’t want to hear it!”

“Oh, but it’s a pert little bum! Very nice and firm, too! Don’t you just want to pinch it? Or give it a nice smack? He likes it, believe me.”

Johanna gagged silently, glaring daggers at her friend.

“I don’t want to hear about your bedroom adventures! Shut up! Oh my god! Shut up! Shut up! Shut uuuup!”

They were both laughing, their faces red from holding back any too loud noises. Miami, their stage manager, still shot them a glare and they quickly abandoned their position to hide in the control room where nobody could judge them and they wouldn’t disturb anyone anymore.

“I seriously need you to never talk about your sex life with me ever again.” Johanna said, still grinning. “I do not want to think about you banging anyone and especially not Roger.”

Crystal gently knocked their shoulders together.

“I won’t if you at least try to flirt with Brianna.”

Johanna snorted and punched him lightly in the shoulder. Crystal groaned exaggeratedly, putting one hand to his chest like an old lady clutching her precious pearly and slumped in his chair, tongue hanging out of his mouth.

“Oh god! You got me! The pain!”

“God, shut up!” She laughed.

He pushed her playfully and ruffled her hair, much to her disdain. She only rolled her eyes at him before sighing and leaning against him.

“Flirt with her.” Crystal said.

“Tell Rog you want to be more than a occasional fuck.”

They started laughing then, giggling helplessly. It was ridiculous, really, and they were aware of it.

Johanna groaned and stretched her legs, wincing when her knees cracked loudly. She cursed quietly and wiped her hands on her pants, observing her work. The speaker had stopped working properly during practice today and she had needed all day to fix it. It was tedious but she liked her work anyway.

She packed her tools up and massaged her shoulders, trying to get the pain out of her tense muscles before lifting the speaker up and carrying it back so she could set it back up where it belonged.

“Do you need a hand?”

Johanna jumped and cursed, almost dropping the speaker just to have Brianna rush towards her and grab it to help her.

“Sorry! I didn’t meant to scare you.”

“It’s fine! I just didn’t expect anyone to be still here.”

Brianna helped her carrying the speaker to the stage despite her- admittedly weak- protests and even offered to help her set it up but Johanna declined politely. She really didn’t want to bother her too much.

“What are you still doing here, anyway?” She asked, then grimaced. “Sorry, that sounded rude, didn’t it?”

“No, you’re fine. It is kind of late, isn’t it? But, uh, Freddie gave me a couple of costumes to try on and- I got tired of it. It’s kind of boring if you just try on clothes on your own, you know?”

Johanna shrugged, not really understanding it but not wanting come off as uninterested. Brianna didn’t seem to think so because she kept on talking while she installed the speaker again. It was nice, not having to work on her own and having someone to talk to. She usually hadn’t because all the other sound techs were busy somewhere else and Crystal was busy somewhere because there was always something wrong with the lights. There was always something wrong with something so once the tech crew got involved with the play, there wasn’t much time to talk anyway because everyone was busy somewhere else.

“Do you want to see my outfits?” Brianna asked, not looking directly at her.

“Yeah, of course. I’d love to.”

Brianna smiled then, wide and sincerely and waited patiently until Johanna was finished before bringing her into the girl’s dressing room. Johanna had never been in there since she wasn’t really needed in there ever. It wasn’t anything special, just rows of mirrors and vanities, some sinks and lockers. Make-up and other things were scattered across the tables but Johanna was quickly distracted by Brianna pulling out a clothing rack.

“Don’t tell Phoebe I brought them in here, I am supposed to leave it in the costume room but I don’t like changing in there.”

“I won’t tell.” Johanna promised and they shared a small smile.

She let herself fall into one of the chairs while Brianna went through her clothes. It had to be Brianna’s spot because there was a picture of her with what she assumed were her parents and a couple of others, including one of Brianna bent over a guitar, focused on playing the instrument.

“You play the guitar?” Johanna asked.

“Hm? Oh, yeah, I built it with my dad when I was a sixteen. How does this look?”

Johanna as about to say something but was caught off guard by Brianna wearing a white pair of pants with a black and white striped shirt with a white cape. The pants were skin tight and showed off her legs nicely.

“Oh.” Johanna said softly, taking her in. “You look beautiful.”

Brianna blushed, her arms crossed in front of her chest. She looked almost shy, not posing or anything like Freddie would and not bragging or making any suggestive comments like Roger would.

“You think so?”

Johanna nodded, suddenly feeling shy, too. Brianna was almost beaming and it was very endearing and cute.

“Do you want to see my favorite one?”

“Of course I do!”

She didn’t dare to look in Brianna’s direction as she got changed. She didn’t want to come off as creepy or anything and be accused of being a pervert. It had happened before. Also, she really didn’t want to give her crush any more fuel by knowing how Brianna looked partially undressed. She was already hopelessly pining, she didn’t need to lust after her, too.

“Okay, ready!”

Brianna looked ethereal. She wore black velvet pants and a white shirt with wide, wing like sleeves. She did a little turn, her arms spread out. She came to a halt with a giggle, looking incredibly pleased with herself but in a humble and shy kind of way.

“You look like an angel.” Johanna whispered.

Her blush deepened and she chuckled, looking a little bit embarrassed but happy at the same time. Johanna felt her own cheeks heat up.

“Don’t be ridiculous.”

“I mean it.”

Brianna bit her lip and looked at her through her hair, angling her head to side. She opened her mouth, then closed it again just to open it again.

“I- uh, do you- I have one more to show you if you want to.”

Johanna nodded again.

“Show me, I want to see it.”

The next outfit consisted of a floor-length dark blue skirt with a low-cut top that left her sternum exposed and she was incredibly ashamed of it but her eyes were drawn to the slight swell of her breasts before snapping back up to her face again.

“It’s not my favorite but I like the skirt. It’s flowy and very comfortable.”

“You look great.” Johanna assured her.

Brianna changed back into her normal clothes and Johanna didn’t really know what she was supposed to do know.

“Do you maybe want to go and grab something to eat? I’m here with my car and… could drive us somewhere? If you want to.”

“Yes!” Johanna said, then cleared her throat, afraid to sound too eager. “Yeah, I’d love to.”

Brianna smiled and Johanna couldn’t help but return it, her heart fluttering in her chest.
