Only Friends Episode 7 & preview for Episode 8

Wow, this was an interesting episode. And the preview... I have some thoughts....

Mew and Ray getting together specifically right now is one of the absolutely worst ideas either of them has had, which is impressive given some of the other things they have done in this show (though I would say Ray driving while intoxicated probably takes the cake because he is endangering not just himself, but other people).

Starting with that fact that Mew is stilling hurting over his relationship with Top. He is attempting to get over him, which makes Ray technically a rebound. And of all the things that have hurt Ray in this show, this will probably be one of the worst. He has been in love with him for years and is finally told maybe they can be together, making him very happy. But when Mew realizes that being with Ray doesn't making healing any easier and/or that he still isn't in love with Ray, he might decide to stop seeing Ray in a romantic context, which is going to do wonders for Ray's mental state (insert sarcasm here). Ray will feel he is being told, once again, that he is not enough, this time meaning not good enough to be loved by Mew.

I feel like Mew should have known better, but Mew is only really thinking about his own hurt right now, and thinks maybe Ray or being with Ray can make him feel better.

Second, Mew and Ray are seen partying in the previews, which with Ray's alcohol issues, isn't a great idea. Mew is allowed to grieve his relationship by partying and drinking, but doing it with Ray who he has to know is an alcoholic is not good. It seems like in the preview that it was Ray bringing Mew to these events, and people thinking Ray is a bad influence. All Ray knows is drinking, so maybe he thinks this is best he can do to help. Ray knows that Mew is upset and trying to get over Top, so he goes along with it because he wants Mew to feel better and either thinks this is a good way or its what Mew wants and Ray doesn't want to get in his way (he wants him to like him back and stopping Mew from doing something might seem like the surest way (to him) to make Mew get upset at him). Mew doesn't seem like much of a partier and combined with his heartbreak, will likely have very little sense of moderation. The problem is both of them need someone around them that will go, "That's enough. It's time to go home now" and neither of them are able to be that person for each other.

Mew has never truly understood Ray's relationship with alcohol, and part of why he drinks. I don't think he knows about Ray's mother cause I remember Ray saying he hasn't really told anybody. That is part of what drives Ray's drinking but the other part is his feelings of being a burden and worthless and his friends have never really made him feel like he isn't. Mew is one of those friends, and while I think he is a much better friend to Ray than the rest of the group, he isn't great. Mew has told Ray a couple times to stop drinking, but that was never going to be enough, and now that Mew is willing to drink and party, he will not be trying to keep Ray from overdoing it (and Mew never seemed to do that much to stop Ray from overdoing it from the beginning). To contrast, Sand knows about Ray's mother. He comes from outside the friend group and understands to an extent how self-deprecating Ray is. And while Sand lets Ray drink with him, he is far more aware about how bad Ray's relationship to it is than Mew. Sand points out to Ray himself that he is addicted to alcohol and Ray brushes it off, saying he isn't. Ray doesn't understand how bad his drinking is because its a crutch for him, so telling him to stop because its bad for him will have no effect. Sand instead tries to always stick around, maybe thinking that at least he can monitor Ray.

Mew and Ray both have their own spirals going on, which means this attempt at a relationship will be a trainwreck for both of them and could ruin their friendship.

Or maybe Mew will fall in love with him, as I don't know what happens. But is it likely? I think not.

Obviously Trobed is the main love story of Community and is practically canon in one way or another and I adore it, but I must say on this rewatch I'm nursing a little flicker of a fond and curious spark about the possibilties of Jabed

#No one throw tomatoes at me I'm allowed to multiship!!!#anyway something about Jeff occupying a persona out of fear and Abed occupying many personas out of love #something about Jeff being a man in his 30s so terrified of being unlovable that he crafts the persona of a man too cool for love #vs Abed a man who's been told he's weird/alien so many times that by his 20s(?) he's fully abandoned any shits he might have once gave #Jeff who makes out like he's a smooth ladykiller who has beautiful women throwing themselves at him #vs Abed who ACTUALLY has women (and men) throwing themselves at him because he's weird and it's hot #Jeff who's still not convinced he's a real person at all under the facade #Abed who's so confident in who/what he is that he can take vacations from it and step into totally different personas but always snap back #I think it's genuinely so important that they're the first two of the Greendale seven to meet/hang out #Jeff needs Abed to call him on his shit and show him it's possible as an adult to be weird and playful and loved for it #Abed needs Jeff to ground him a little and to take the group spotlight so Abed can observe and play to his heart's content #anyway i think in the best timeline we got an ep subplot like the han solo!Abed and Annie subplot #wherein Abed embodied a character Jeff has a buried crush on and briefly had a whirlwind romance with him and rocked his world #and Jeff has a crisis for like a week bc he considers himself a pickup artist who knows all the tricks #but the study group TV nerd just swept him off his feet and then strolled away like it was *nothing*#anyway don't mind me. i like how some characters just resonate the same idea for a lot of people (emphasis on not all people) when it comes to appearance. Asher? yeah, that one blond dude. Vega? You mean the demon with the long ass hair usually slicked back. Elliott? Yeah the guy with purple eyes, occasionally with a beanie.

Besides Guy. Guy gets a pass. Guy is simply just Eric as Eric is simply just Guy.

#I just find it so fascinating how everyone has such different interpretations on every characters #but some select characters look the same or have that one thing so many people agree on #ALSO In absolutely no way does this mean you shouldn’t see those characters differently then what I pointed out!!!#I’m not saying in anyway this is how you should see them #I’m simply just pointing out that this is what I’ve observed #redacted asmr

Do…. Do people actually have an issue with stuff being written in present tense?

#I’ve heard of POV preference but seeing all these posts about how much people dislike present tense #maybe I’m just not an observant reader but I can count the number of times I’ve actively noted a book/fic’s tense on one hand #and almost always it was because I liked how it worked with the author’s writing style #you’re telling me people will consider dropping something JUST because it’s in present tense??#genuinely can someone explain this to me?#I know some people don’t like first person pov because it feels too close and ‘I’ didn’t do anything. the character did #(I don’t really see it that way and don’t mind first person though I prefer third person)#and second person pov is rare and people don’t like it for the same reasons (being told what they as a reader ‘did’)#(I personally like second person pov a LOT but also prefer it to be a little treat actually suited to the story)#but verb tense?? as long as it all works grammatically I don’t see an issue #a lot of the examples I see of how present tense doesn’t work is showing two paragraphs side by side in the past and present #and I will agree that the present reads worse comparatively #but also it’s because the sentences were obviously (at least imo) written and structured for past tense first #and then ‘translated’ to present tense if that makes sense #I personally like how present tense lets me play with my sentences #but also I know that when I play with time and have a character recount past events within their own internal musings I switch tense #which I would think is allowed?? but maybe that’s bad form and I’m proving the point why past tense is ‘superior’#(I don’t really care for fic writing purposes as long as it flows and isn’t distracting but who’s to say)#anyways this was long but yeah. genuinely curious about this one #white weasel talks #tbd probs

#watching a documentary and thinking about animatronics ...#i dunno how much real world animatronic inspiration there actually was in fnaf though #sister location is funny because theyre not even animatronics anymore those are straight up just robots #which is a character design choice that saw through to security breach #but to be fair. fnaf character design never really intended to be too true to actual animatronics #its fnaf its not gonna be realistic. i dont mind this honestly like. i dunno it just has its own idea of an animatronic #the concept of a springlock suit is still really funny to me though. hello #if i make my own thing about animatronics id pull from actual animatronics but also just do whatever i think is cool. you know #i like when people draw fnafs but with wrinkly face plates and like clothing and stuff.#i have my own redesigns in my head but its also like. well if you stick to face plates then that kind of #makes it hard to bite things. taking away a major aspect of i dunno fnaf ''''lore'''' i guess #with fnaf animatronics the whole thing is (atleast in the first game) pulling from the essence of what about animatronics frightens people #and then just. making it so they have jaws that could actually bite and leaving huge spaces in the eye holes and making the joints visible #not like. what i would have done but i understand why its so iconic and works as a good design within these games #in later games some of the designs are just so obnoxiously trying to be scary that it just doesnt really work.#fnaf ... is stupid.#anyway not a lore guy i just like animatronics and observing things. if you couldnt already tell #fnaf is really fun to talk about and dissect. because it makes me wanna make things that are good and cool #e #i gotta stop here im gonna go on forever #getting teardrop to talk #this post was from yesterday i finished the documentary . btw the letterboxd reviews are so mean

lucas deserved more interactions with the older group...

#i was saying that to jack like a week ago #but lucas is incredibly mature for his age #which comes with his awareness which has always been developed; obviously... as a black kid in 80s suburban america #(though i also think that maturity anyway is something he had in common w/ max but let's not for now)#lucas could provide So much to the older characters?#he has some moments with robin in the novel but they're not very developed i'd say #still moments tho!!! ^-^#i like to think he rolls his eyes at the party sometimes because.... being around a bunch of people you're disconnected to #who don't even want to hear about you or how you're doing #is very disheartening??? very upsetting...#he is so level-headed and calm that when he speaks to them and they have like zero (0) decorum #he is just very observant and sweet #he doesn't blame them because he knows they wouldn't get it #but anyway i don't like mike and dustin at times for obvious reasons #especially dustin like i couldn't give less of a fuck my guy #anyways the moral of the story is lucas deserved a scene with nancy or steve or robin or jon #i think i would have enjoyed it! especially at the hospital too like #i know they comforted him n everything #tbt.#my opinions are correct sorry if you disagree that sucks #yeaa.....
