first and foremost, not all muslims are arabs, and not all arabs are muslims. yes, most terminology and the holy book is in arabic, but that doesnt mean its exclusively arabs

indonesia (not an arab country) has the highest population of muslims worldwide

the arab country with the most christians is egypt, but the arab country with the highest population of christians is lebanon 

not all practicing muslim women wear hijab (some extremely religious women might not wear a hijab)

five prayers a day: fajr (before sunrise), zuhr (midday), asr (afternoon), maghreb/maghrib (sunset), ishaa (nighttime)

call to prayer is known as 'azan', you can listen to it on youtube

muslims use the lunar calendar (known as the hijri calendar), which also has 12 months but its around two weeks shorter than the gregorian calendar. most people only remember the ninth month: ramadan

fasting consists of not eating/drinking from fajr until maghrib. you stop as soon as the azan for fajr sounds, and you can start again as soon as the azan for maghrib sounds. you fast for the entire month of ramadan, but its also encouraged to fast on mondays, thursdays, and the 14th/15th/16th days of each month of the hijri calendar

allah isnt the name of god. allah is the arabic word for 'god'

women dont have to cover up completely until puberty, athough some girls cover up before then and other women dont cover up at all

women can be religious and not cover up

the word 'hijab' doesnt show up in the quran, its 'khimar'. hijab is to cover up completely, not just hair. you cant wear a headscarf with a short sleeved shirt

men have to cover up too. from their navel to their knees absolutely has to be covered up, and (in most islamic cultures, not necessarily exactly religious) they cover up their chests as well 

also men are told to avert their gazes from women more than women are told to cover up. youd find a lot of men in muslim countries not looking up from the floor when walking, especially in areas w a lot of women

kids by the age of eight can usually recite at least four chapters from the quran (the first one and the last three, mostly. it doesnt matter if theyre not arab)

theres only one version of the quran. the same copy thats existed for 1400 years and millions of people have memorized it

on that note, people who memorize the quran are called hafiz, and there isnt a particular age. theres a three year old hafiz and a woman who didnt memorize it until age eighty three

there are two different sources for islamic law: the quran (holy book), and hadith (quotes of the prophet). dua' is completely different, its a prayer used to ask help from god, but unlike the five prayers, it doesnt really require a specific ritual. you just sit, face the direction of mecca, and say the dua'

superstitions are haram, but muslims do believe in black magic (its sihr in arabic and its one of the biggest sins) and djinn (there are djinn muslims but theyre widely regarded somewhat like monsters who encourage/help you to do black magic)

allahu akbar means "god is greater" or "god is the greatest". it isnt used as a signal to blow people up, and it isnt a term used purely by islam extremists

assalamu aleikum / waaleikum assalam mean, respectively, "peace be upon you" and "and peace be upon you too" basically just our way of just saying "hi" along with the reply

subhanallah means "glory be to god" usually when witnessing a miracle or when amazed

mashaallah - there arent any exact english equivalents but it means "what god wills". usually for compliments or to protect someone from evil eye

insha'allah - simply "god willing" but we use this when talking about the future (like "will you come to school?" "insha'allah" or "we'll get the gift, right?" "insha'allah"). can be replaced by the lesser used "bi'ithn illah"

alhamdu lillah - "praise be to god" or "thanks be to god. used in the way you might imagine, but also as a way to express that youre doing fine. "how are you doing today, sister?" "alhamdu lillah" (also when finishing a meal / finishing drinking water)

astaghfir ullah - "i seek forgiveness from god" whenever we see someone do something haram or when we ourselves do something haram and wish to repent

bismillah - "in the name of god" we use this whenever we begin something. a lot of arab literature starts with this. every chapter im the quran starts with this. every meal starts with saying this before eating

I saw you posted about the song Harbu Darbu. Why is Dua Lipa Bella hadid and Mia Khalifa mentioned in it? Like it seems wild to have beef with am ex porn star?

So I'm going to go into what each celeb did to be antisemitic, what the lyrics about them mean in English and why its not about them being Palestinian, arab or pro Palestine.

On the surface it does seem weird to have beef with an ex porn star however it's less so beef and moreso calling out problematic celebrities.

All of the celebs mentioned have either participated in antisemitism or supported Hamas/oct 7th. It's not just because they're Palestinian (Bella Hadid) or arab (Mia Khalifa) or dated a Palestinian (Dua Lipa).

Bella Hadid has spread blood libel. Her and Gigi have been called out many times over the years for their antisemitism. You can only accidentally be antisemitic so many times before it goes from "whoopsie didnt realize this was antisemitic" to "I'm hiding my antisemitism as an accident and not knowing better even though I do know better and hate jews"

Dua Lipa has claimed that what Israel is doing is ethnic cleansing which is false and rooted in blood libel. She has also shared a post on her Instagram in the past which states that Israeli jews are fake jews.

Mia Khalifa has tweeted "Can someone please tell the freedom fighters in Palestine  to flip their phones and film horizontal." And she also posted a photo of hamasniks in a ute on their way to attack jews with the caption "Renaissance painting".

She posted a photo of herself drinking wine that was made in Reims in France when Nazis controlled Reims and had the caption "my wine is older than your apartheid 'state'". So you know, she was boasting about drinking wine made during the time when jews were being taken from France to nazi camps to be killed.

There is just so much she has done too.

All of this is super easy to find on Google to fact check it yourself.

Now going into the lyrics of the song, in English it goes

Please keep in mind that not every language directly translates into English with perfect accuracy. However the line essentially just means "Karma is gonna get you"

It's not calling for those celebs to be killed. It just saying that Karma will get them.

The first time I took the exam was around 4 years ago. Although I admit it was the longest test preparation, I never expected to get a 7 the first time.

Persiapan pertama kali mungkin sekitar 6 bulan sampe hampir setahun. Sejak baca blognya kiky edward, saya mulai nyusun jadwal belajar sendiri dan nyari-nyari resources yang direkomendasiin. Ketika gap year dan jadi santri di utrujah, I woke up for around one until two hours each night to practice. Karena akses pondok terbatas, latihan reading, listening, speaking dan writing hampir semua sendiri. I finished a box full of cambridge practice books, especially for the reading and listening part. Saya juga izin sama musyrifah biar dibolehin bawa HP untuk dengerin audio. Sementara untuk writing dan speaking kalau bisa minta review temen, atau ga rekam dan review sendiri. Jadwal tidur saya sepenuhnya terbalik dari jadwal santri yang lain, ketemu temen-temen pas kelas dan jam sholat aja. Definisi beneran jadi 'kalong'.

As I gradually needed feedback for my writing and speaking, I applied for the IELTS class di NEC. Although it was a Saturday weekly and wasn't intensive, it felt like a private one since I was the only student.

In the arabic classes, struktur nyusun kalimat saya mulai kecampur-campur. Studying English at night while studying Arabic during the day has made my brain jumbled.

However, the hardest part was enduring the boredom to be consistent with the routine. Bukan apa-apa, ketika itu fokus kerjaan saya cuma tiga: bahasa inggris, ujian murajaah dan bahasa arab, dimana masing-masing menuntut standar yang lumayan tinggi, dalam periode waktu yang lumayan lama, dengan sarana refreshing yang sangat minim.

One note to myself from this period is; I was so focused on myself, that I forgot others. A certain dramatic experience: I was almost disqualified from the speaking test. Dengan bodohnya, rentang waktu antara tes sebelumnya dan tes speaking dipake buat balik dulu untuk sholat dan istirahat. Iya, waktu itu masih underestimate jalanan jakarta. Alhasil telatlah hampir satu jam. Di perjalanan udah sepenuhnya pasrah sama hasil dan bersiap dengan kemungkinan terburuk. Sampe tempat tes, entah panitianya mungkin ikut kasian sama muka saya yang berurai air mata dan akhirnya tetep dibolehin langsung masuk. Lucunya, pengalaman ini jadi bahan cerita saya di tes speaking yang ketiga.

The second test was actually a sudden test. The previous one annoyingly exactly expired before I applied for IISMA, hence the need for a new one.

It was a computer-based test, jadi materi belajar semua diganti online buat ngebiasain pake komputer. Latihan cenderung lebih mudah karena ga perlu belajar banget dari '0'. I'm also glad to find www.ieltsonlinetests.com for practices. Waktu itu ga sempet nyari partner buat writing dan speaking, jadi sepenuhnya semua review sendiri. Karena yang penting skornya jangan sampe turun, strateginya juga masih sama kayak tes yang pertama; utamain maksimalin skor dari yang dianggap kuat (reading dan listening), lainnya bismillah aja deh. Makanya nilainya pun masih sangat jomplang, apalagi sama writing.

I didn't have other particular responsibilities, so I could focus on studying quite well. I was able to do other things and paid attention to the house since it was during the online lecture period. The challenge was adapting to the online format while having a relatively short preparation time. Still, Allah kindly gave me a higher score than before and I'm grateful for that.

The last one (hopefully). Motivasi terbesar buat rajin untuk tes ketiga adalah duit. I wanna make sure it's worth the money, you see. Seenggaknya jangan sampe turun lah, sayang tiga juta (wth the price got higher each time:").

But the higher you set the previous bar, the higher you should aim for the next one.

It still seems difficult to aim for 8.

Persiapan agak intensif sekitar tiga bulanan, 'agak' karena harus nyambi kerja. The challenge was to maintain the balance; berusaha sebisanya buat dapet hasil terbaik, jangan sampe ganggu kerjaan -yang mana harus berangkat pagi dan pulang malem-, jangan sampe lupa rumah, dan jangan lupa buat 'hidup'. 'Hidup' dalam artian terpenuhi ruh, jiwa, diri dan sosial.

Akhirnya luangin waktu belajar seenggaknya sejam sebelum shubuh atau sebelum pulang kerja. Selain juga konsisten nongkrong tiap jumat sore di luar buat belajar, buka buku atau apa gitu. Sampe-sampe kalo pulang cepet orang-orang pada heran, 'tumben pulang cepet' haha. I feel bad for bapak-bapak yang biasa nungguin buat ngunci ruangan sih.

Reading dan listening masih latihan cuma dari www.ieltsonlinetest.com aja. Strategi untuk kali ini berubah, I wanna focus more on the writing part. Saya sadar kalo skornya masih kurang aman, dan sadar juga kalau academic writing emang masih payah padahal paling dibutuhin buat jangka panjang. Akhirnya dibantu pake ikut academic writing course-nya LBI buat nunjang skill writing secara umum, sementara latihan intensif pribadinya dibantu tektokan sama chatgpt (wkwk what an experience being trained by an AI). Sementara untuk speaking, saya buat appointment sekitar seminggu sekali selama sebulan terakhir sama beberapa native di Italki. Plusnya via Italki bisa lebih fleksible dan variatif ketemu orang, dengan partner yang mayan profesional karena ada fee, tapi dengan fee yang bisa menyesuaikan dengan dompet pribadi.

Well, the results show my writing and speaking were still the lowest. It passed the minimum at least. However, not even in my dream would I expect to get a 9 on one of my results. It feels like all those paper readings, intentionally or not, were actually worth the time.

During the last period, I often questioned myself; Why should I do this hard? Haven't I done enough for English? Isn't it okay to do it modestly? Isn't it better to do other languages instead? While I meet strangers online and pour my thoughts into writing, I renew my motivation.

An international test is a way to validate your capacity based on an internationally recognized standard. However, language is beyond a test.

Jika fungsi utama bahasa adalah untuk berkomunikasi, maka bukankah tidak ada batasan untuk berkomunikasi? Semakin baik kamu bisa berkomunikasi, semakin baik pula pesan disampaikan dan dipahami antara kamu dan lawan bicara. Semakin tinggi penguasaanmu akan bahasa, semakin luas juga range caramu dalam berkomunikasi dengan berbagai lawan bicara. Meskipun selalu ada kemungkinan salah paham dan miskomunikasi yang berujung konflik, tidak ada salahnya terus mengasah kemampuan. Ya, meskipun kita pahami pula kalau komunikasi tidak hanya tentang bahasa, sebagaimana bahasa tidak hanya tentang komunikasi.

Early days when I was in the UK, I lost my confidence.

I repeatedly apologized for my English. I repeatedly asked people to repeat their talks.

The language barrier is real. However, the fear of being embarrassed and humiliated is worse. It is especially worsened when it hinders you from interacting and connecting with others.

No matter how many people reassured me that my English was good, even if I knew my IELTS score was sufficiently high already, I couldn't shake the negative thinking off my head. Consequently, I frequently shut myself in the room. Defense mechanism, they said.

At the end of the day, a score might mean nothing when it does not help you brace yourselves outside the room. On the other side, bravery means everything when it comes to using everything in your hand to survive.

I take pride in preparing for the exam mainly by myself. Because then I know that I am able to count on myself to achieve my own purpose. Then, I recognized the blessings I have; that I was able to navigate through the help of others. Hopefully, all of these will help me being responsible and adapting to any situation in the future.

This is a very niche Muslim issue (about accessibility of the religion due to language barriers) but

Today my sister invited her friend over to our apartment for iftaar (dinner you eat to break your fast). Her friend is a revert (Muslim for ~4 years now) whose first language is English.

I invited a friend too and all three of us (myself, my sister, my friend) are desi Muslims. So much of our language concerning religion is in Urdu cause that's how we were raised. Ex. ablution is wudhu, dates are kadjoors, prayer is dua, prayer mat is janamaaz, intention is niyaat, etc. As we threw around these words my sister's friend would ask for clarification and she looked kinda lost.

It made me reflect on how a lot of language surrounding the faith can be exclusionary towards reverts because unless they know Arabic or Urdu (at least in the communities here) it's hard to "break in". So it can probably contribute to feeling isolated.

It also made me realize that as someone born Muslim and raised with Urdu, I don't even know the difference between terminology that's in Arabic (that most Muslims would probably know) and terminology that's in Urdu because Urdu has loan words from Arabic. While rediscovering my own faith, I had do shift some things from Urdu to English, like how I would express my intention during prayer, to make them more deliberate. Talking to my sister's friend made me realize there's more work to do with switching over my religious practice to English since English is my first language 🤔

Lastly, I think the prevalence of too much Arabic terminology can also be off-putting. I'm not a native Arabic speaker (I can only read Arabic badly, not even understand it) so it's a bit intimidating going into a space where people are exclusively using Arabic terminology (ex. consistently using "tawakkal" to talk about trust in God and assuming everyone understands it instead of explaining the concept in English). It would be more accessible to define Arabic concepts in the speaking language (whether English or other) as they're brought up.

But specifically, I think it would be useful to first-generation desis (Urdu as a second language) to dissect the language we use to refer to our religious practices and ensure we're not only catering to other desi Muslims. 🤔

Wa alykum assalam! I hope you're well too! That's so nice to hear that you're interested in Qur'an journaling alhamdulillah it's such a beautiful intention and I pray Allah will put barakah in your efforts.

SOURCES:

I think most of my posts about tafsir are either from my own studies (using translations of Tafsir ibn Kathir, or from Towards Understanding the Qur'an). I personally use those two because they are the ones I'm most familiar with, those are the ones I physically have in my home, and because they usually include all the opinions of scholars about the meanings of things. Like for example if there was ever any discourse about if a surah was makki or madani then they go into who said what and what their evidences were etc. So they're definitely very comprehensive.

I do also often take notes from tafsir classes I'm attending as part of the Miftaah Online program (this semester's tafsir class is for Surah Nur). These are usually done by scholars who have studied in the islamic world and are directly teaching (in english) from the arabic tafsir books.

As for youtube videos/lectures, there's a variety of scholars but I would encourage you to look up the speakers credentials, and what tafsir book they're using as a source etc.

NOTE-TAKING FORMAT

Since I'm in a sisters halaqah group (which i strongly recommend joining if you can find one) many times I'm taking notes with the intention of being able to explain the surah from my notes (which helps when trying to decide what I should write down and what I leave out)

I follow the same format that's found in Towards Understanding the Qur'an which is:

Naming of the Surah - what does it mean? Where does it come from? What is the etymology of the word?

Place / Circumstance of Revelation / Historical Context - Is it makki or madani? Were any parts of the surah/ the whole surah revealed in response to a specific event? What the situation when the surah was revealed? What was the culture, situation etc.

Bigger themes and subject-matter - What does the surah talk about? which ayahs focus on what topic? If you're interested in just the meaning of the qur'an, I would definitely recommend The Clear Qur'an translation by Dr. Mustafa Khattab. It's also divided very nicely into themes and the language is very clear (lol)

Ayah by Ayah explanation - detailed information about each ayah (one of the most interesting parts to me to be honest. The arabic language is so rich with meaning and connotation so even small ayahs have multiple layers of meaning) - This section can be extremeeeely long lol - depends on how many ayahs you want to study at a time - I also use this section to write the meanings of any arabic words I want to remember the meanings of (especially for short surahs)

Personal lessons/Reflections (Considered tadabbur - NOT tafsir) - how do I myself relate to these ayahs? Does an ayah remind me of something? What lesson do I get out of it? How can I possibly apply this ayah to my own life?

Dua - I mean you don't have to write it but it's nice to always make dua that the knowledge you wrote will be useful to you and that Allah gives us the tawfiq to benefit from it and protect us from this knowledge testifying against us.

Inshallah I hope I was able to be of some help! I'm no expert in the matter, just another student of the qur'an just like you, just sharing my experience. I looked at the greatest needs we have in this day and age and selected 7 dua’s from the Quran and Sunnah that I feel would be in the best interests of every Muslim.

It would be ideal to print this list (or have it on your phone) and keep it handy at the time of iftar. Likewise, please add to your list anything else that you would like, especially that which your heart desires.

For your convenience I have included the Arabic, English transliteration, and English translation.

I pray Allah accepts from us all, and makes us from those who are forgiven and pardoned this Ramadan and entered into alfirdaws in the hereafter. Ameen.

DUA 1:

للّهُـمَّ إِنِّي أَعْوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الهَـمِّ وَ الْحُـزْنِ، والعًجْـزِ والكَسَلِ والبُخْـلِوالجُـبْنِ، وضَلْـعِ الـدَّيْنِ وغَلَبَـةِ الرِّجال Allahumma inni ‘audhubika min al-hammi wal huzani,wal ‘ajzi wal kasali, wal bukhli wal jubni, wa dala’ad-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijâl. O Allah, I take refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, weakness and laziness, miserliness and cowardice, the burden of debts and from being over powered by men.

DUA 2:

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِيالدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ Rubbana aatina fid-dunya hassana,wa fil akhirati hassana, waqina ‘adhab an-nar. Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire. {Surat Al Baqarah 2: Verse 201}

DUA 3:

رَبِّ اجْعَلْنِي مُقِيمَالصَّلَاةِ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِي ۚ رَبَّنَا وَتَقَبَّلْ دُعَاءِرَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لِيوَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الْحِسَابُ Rubbi j’alnee muqeem as-salati wa mindhuriyyati. Rubbana, wa taqabbal dua’. Rubbana ighfir li wa li walidayya wa lilmu’mineena yawma yaqoom ul-hisab My Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and [many] from my descendants. DUA 4:

اللّهُـمَّ إِنِّـي أسْـأَلُـكَ العَـفْوَوَالعـافِـيةَ في الدُّنْـيا وَالآخِـرَة اللّهُـمَّ إِنِّـي أسْـأَلُـكَالعَـفْوَ وَالعـافِـيةَ في ديني وَدُنْـيايَ وَأهْـلي وَمالـي ، اللّهُـمَّاسْتُـرْ عـوْراتي وَآمِـنْ رَوْعاتـي ،اللّهُـمَّ احْفَظْـني مِن بَـينِ يَدَيَّوَمِن خَلْفـي وَعَن يَمـيني وَعَن شِمـالي ، وَمِن فَوْقـي ، وَأَعـوذُ بِعَظَمَـتِكَأَن أُغْـتالَ مِن تَحْتـي Allahumma inni as-alukaal-‘afwa wal ‘afiyata fid dunya wal akhira. Allahumma inni as-aluka al ‘afwa walafiyata fee deeni wa dunyaya wa ahlee wa malee. Allahumma ustur ‘awrati wa aminrow’ati. DUA 5:

اللّهُـمَّ إِنِّـي أَسْأَلُـكَ عِلْمـاً نافِعـاً وَرِزْقـاً طَيِّـباً ،وَعَمَـلاً مُتَقَـبَّلاً Allahuma inni as-aluka‘ilman nafi’an wa rizqan tayyiban wa ‘amalan matqaballa. “O Allah, I ask You for knowledge which is beneficial and sustenance which is good, and deeds which are acceptable. [to be said after giving salam for the fajr prayer].”

DUA 6:

اللّهُـمَّ أَعِـنِّي عَلـى ذِكْـرِكَ وَشُكْـرِك ، وَحُسْـنِ عِبـادَتِـك Allahuma a’inni ‘aladhikrika washukrika wahusni‘ibadatik. “O Allah, help me to remember You, to thank You, and to worship You in the best of manners.”

DUA 7:

اللّهُـمَّ إِنِّـي أَسْأَلُـكَ الجَـنَّةَ وأََعوذُ بِـكَ مِـنَ الـنّار Allahuma inni as-aluka al-jannata wa a’udhubika min an-nar. “O Allah, I ask You to grant me Paradise and I take refuge in You from the Fire.”

I feel lost with religion. Alhamdulilah I’m able to pray 5x and wake up for tahajjud but I feel like I’m not doing enough. I’m seeking more knowledge about Islam and end up feeling so overwhelmed by it. I can’t read Arabic so reading the Quran is difficult so I’m reading it in English. Despite this I still feel like I’m not a good enough Muslim how do I fix this 😢

Don’t lose hope in the mercy of Allah swt. Alhumdulillah Wallahi you are far better than those who don’t pray their 5 daily prayers let alone wake up for tahajjud. This is what shaytan makes us do by making us feel bad for not doing enough and not make us appreciate what we’ve been doing despite struggling. Allah swt sees all and knows your struggles . Take it slow and steady , remember you’ve your whole life time to gain knowledge about Islam and learning Arabic and aslong as you don’t let go , that’s all it matters. Whenever you get those thoughts of not feeling like a good enough Muslim, shut them down by busying yourself with dhikr or making dua and asking Allah swt for forgiveness. You’re doing your best and be rest assured your struggle won’t go down in vain , bi idnillah ☝🏽😅

Translation of Salatul Hajat Dua

There is no god but Allah the Clement and Wise. There is no god but Allah the High and Mighty. Glory be to Allah, Lord of Tremendous Throne. All praise is to Allah, Lord of the worlds. I ask you (O Allah) everything that leads to your mercy, and your tremendous forgiveness, enrichment in all good, and freedom from all sin. Do not leave a sin of mine (O Allah), except that you forgive it, nor any concern except that you create for it an opening, nor any need in which there is your good pleasure except that you fulfil it, O Most Merciful!

The meaning of this dua in the words of Abu Dawood is, “Whenever a matter became serious, the Prophet (PBUH) turned to salah.” It means that one can plead to God at any time asking for help, for Allah is the most merciful and beneficent. Among all voluntary appeals to Allah, there is also one important prayer, which is called Salatul Hajat. It is observed for the purpose of completion of one’s particular Haajah (need). It is but one of the ways to pray to the Almighty for one’s rightful wish.
