one of my favorite tiny arcane moments is on the bridge when Jayce commits the classism of the year and Viktor slaps his hand away when he tries to help him up. it’s such a good detail. this is a casual intimacy that is part of their dynamic, so ingrained that Jayce doesn’t hesitate to reach for his arm.

Viktor granted Jayce the trust to touch him and he revokes it when he fucks up. it’s just really cool to see that kind of bodily autonomy from a disabled character. that’s the good shit! this is why I was recommending arcane to my fellow cripples.

part of having a relationship of any kind with a disabled person is becoming acquainted with their needs and boundaries. the audience doesn’t get to see this development in their early days of partnership because of the timeskip but it’s all laid out in one scene in a few gestures. this is the kind of stuff I’m talking about when I say the writing in season one is incredibly tight.

He's perhaps the least atrocious choice on the list. He would make a good ally to the cause. The Councillor would also be a good choice for that, maybe... However, I'm not in the business of marrying up or learning table manners. I don't know how happy I would be spending my time in a dingy cave, only to go to work to a worse, dingier cave. With all due respect, he's not exactly my type, either, as he's got about 20 years on me and body weight that could rival my own. Though...

He has a certain... way of speaking. It puts you at ease. Makes you feel like everything will be okay. I've never met someone like that before him. Perhaps it's Piltie arrogance, this self-assured entitlement to things going your way, a simple conviction. Confidence. I thought I have met people like that, and... No. There is a difference between people who promise to fight to help you, and people who reassure you that your own fight will succeed. Between empty quotes and speaking plainly... I know my choice.

I was once attached to a creature who was ultimately used to create, eh, “medicinal” substances, to explore the regenerative potential of humanity. It was held in a state of half-death for the purpose. One could argue either way for the morality of this, but I found it cruel and the memory continues to haunt me. It is simply that your description reminded me of these events, though the situations are, in fact, entirely different.

That's an excellent question.

After the incident at the river, I was left trying to tend my wounds with no help. My mistake had not only cost me Felicia, but everyone, and Vander continued to have the support of the Undercity. He got to mourn and heal but left me to rot.

I ran as far as I could, my wounds were looking better except for my eye, I couldn't get my eyelids to open and there was a constant throbbing pain that kept me from sleeping for nights on end. What I needed was a doctor to help deal with the problem, and considering it was possible Vander was still out looking to kill me, I couldn't go to a conventional doctor.

Singed had always been a whispered name, it's not every day a Piltie quits their job at the academy and relocates to the Undercity. So I went looking for him and I found him. He was in a little secluded spot of polluted water near the mines.

He's not a gentle doctor, I would recommend an actual healer in extreme situations if you can't handle having your eyelid cut off while fully awake.

Given he was useful and I was an "fascinating subject," we came to an agreement, from there I became more helpful to his "science projects."

Singed as Orianna's Father

Since this shot in Arcane there's been a pretty sizeable group of people suggesting Orianna will be written into Arcane as the daughter of Singed. I'm not entirely sold on this being the case, given that the shot we get is so small, but given that there's a chance, I've been thinking a lot about the possibility and I'm. Not A Fan.

This isn't to say I think it'll be poorly done or anything - The writers of Arcane are incredible, so I wholeheartedly believe that, if this is made the case, it'll be well written and compelling. My issue is not that it's going to be bad, or even that it'll be worse than the current lore. My main issue is that I don't think it lines up well with the established aspects of Orianna's character and simplifies her relationship with her father in a way I don't love, while also harming the worldbuilding of Runeterra and of Piltover specifically.

Something that has always intrigued me about Orianna's lore is her relationship with her father Corin. Part of why is because that relationship is so poorly explored in her original lore. Her father doesn't let her go anywhere without him, and only lets her leave home to go to the theater, which becomes her only understanding of the outside world. When she escapes for Zaun to help people after a mining explosion and ends up getting terminally sick, her father DOES make her a set of prosthetic lungs - shout out to him for that one - but he makes it so they only work when wound up with a key that he keeps behind a locked door. And still, in spite of the obviously poor treatment she received, Orianna gives her heart to her father once his own health starts failing.

There's like. SO much interesting stuff here. I kinda like that Corin is mostly just a guy? He's a not great father in a way that feels really resonant and grounded in a fantasy setting, whereas Singed being her father means she has a dad who's shitty in a grounded way and also makes nukes to destroy Ionia with and manufactured the drug crisis of a millennia in Zaun, one of which he's already done in Arcane lol. This choice inexorably ties Orianna to the larger narrative, when honestly I'm not sold on the need for that? It might just be my love of smaller slice-of-life storytelling, but it's hard to imagine how Orianna's journey toward regaining her humanity and understanding her new self ties into the current plot of Arcane. There are ties to Viktor there that could have their plots sort of opposed to one another, with Viktor getting further from humanity while Orianna aspires to it, and there are a million other ideas they could go with which could be compelling and exciting, but again, the quality of the storytelling isn't my concern.

I feel that the relationship she has with Corin is an essential part of Orianna's character. It is something which contributes to her feelings of isolation and her love of the outside world, as well as speaking to her nature as a fundamentally caring person. It's also something that to this day has never been resolved; for all we know, Orianna is still just out there, not understanding herself or her relationships and thinking her isolation is permanent. And that's not a satisfying ending for a character who is completely capable of self-love and in a world where her isolation is genuinely fabricated. And I like these aspects of her character! She's complex, she's grounded, and there's already such a great base for her character that I think would be hurt with this relationship with Singed.

There's also a couple issues I have with how it impacts the worldbuilding, and what the implications of Arcane's story as it stands has on Orianna as a character. Orianna's dad, in base canon, runs a shop where he designs sells prosthetics. He's not a huge scholar, he's not insanely wealthy, he has no access to special tech. Orianna doesn't gain hextech until she manages to get some from a chembaron. I really like this choice! It tells us a little something more about Piltover to know that there is some weirdo in his shop in the city turning his daughter into a robot, showing off a little bit more about the culture of the city and attitudes toward augmentation at the time Orianna was needing new parts. This isn't necessarily lost if Singed is her father, but Zaun has a different attitude toward mods, and it's harder to consider Singed's opinion on anything to represent the common people considering his... everything.

I'm also very interested to see how they would manage to conflict of hextech that she presents; in order for her to exist as her current self in Arcane, she would've had to be built before or during season 1, which was before the discovery of hextech. I have some thoughts about how they could do this with respect to her Old Lore, but that's gonna have to be a separate post, as this one is long enough as it is already XD

Basically, I like the Orianna we have now. I think there's so much of her left unexplored, and the changes to her character this represents would leave her original story incomplete and also change her to a significant capacity. The new Orianna that could be made from that totally has the ability to be as interesting or more than the one of base lore, but I'm not sure it's the Orianna I know.

G.R.R. Martin once planned to have a time skip in between each chapter of the books, but discarded it because it would require large amounts of flashbacks and expositions to get the audience up to speed. Boy, it sure is great that YJ only had one season so we didn't have to worry about each sequential season having to allocate precious episode time to explain what happen in the gaps while also developing new characters and plot lines /s

Sadly I cannot speak to or for Mister George Raymond Richard Martin's storytelling as I managed to miss the boat on both ASOIAF as a book series and Game of Thrones as a TV phenomenon. However, it certainly seems like he made the right decision there. Smart man.

As for the Young Justice Animated series... I can only agree. While I would have loved to see a continuation of the mystery, and think there was a lot of potential in the original cast of heroes and interesting things they could have done with The Light, I'm glad that DC made the call to cancel the show and move on to new projects when it became clear that the tone and themes didn't fit with their brand-pivot to New 52 edginess, rather than trying to forcibly crush the series into an incompatible mold for use as a marketing vessel.

Plus, the more complaints I've heard from other franchises about what happens when you leave Greg Weisman creatively unsupervised, the more likely it is that we would have just been in for a bad-fanfic barrage of random new characters, arbitrary time-skips, jumbled perspective-hopping, attempted twitter-retcons and general throwing-ideas-at-a-wall that he seems to use in place of actually learning basic narrative techniques like developing a story arc, maintaining character consistency or creating proper causal links between concepts, all seasoned with a heaping helping of Joss-Whedon-inspired performative virtue-signalling, creepy rape-y garbage and fetishistic sexism. Bullet dodged, methinks. Our city now.

You… preserved this yourself? For someone new to the Academy, your craftsmanship is impressive. While there is something poetic in what you have done in attempting to preserve beauty despite decay, I cannot help but feel unnerved by it. Not everything can, or should, be saved. To be held in stasis, a facsimile of life, is a terrible thing. Though the avian is, indeed, deceased, its appearance of life… well, you remind me of someone in my past.
